RESUMO

The phylum Placozoa remains one of the least explored among early-branching metazoan lineages. For over 130 years, this phylum had been represented by the single species Trichoplax adhaerens-an animal with the simplest known body plan (three cell layers without any organs) but complex behaviors. Recently, extensive sampling of placozoans across the globe and their subsequent genetic analysis have revealed incredible biodiversity with numerous cryptic species worldwide. However, only a few culture protocols are available to date, and all are for one species only. Here, we describe the breeding of four different species representing two placozoan genera: Trichoplax adhaerens, Trichoplax sp. H2, Hoilungia sp. H4, and Hoilungia hongkongensis originating from diverse biotopes. Our protocols allow to culture all species under comparable conditions. Next, we outlined various food sources and optimized strain-specific parameters enabling long-term culturing. These protocols can facilitate comparative analyses of placozoan biology and behaviors, which together will contribute to deciphering general principles of animal organization.

Purpose: This study investigated the effect of dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors (DPP-4is) on fibrosis after glaucoma filtering surgery with clinical data and an in vitro model that used transforming growth factor-ß (TGF-ß) to induce human Tenon's fibroblast (HTF) fibrosis. Methods: The medical records of 41 eyes of 35 patients with diabetes with neovascular glaucoma (NVG) who received initial trabeculectomy were retrospectively reviewed. The surgical success rate was compared between cases that received (n = 23) and did not receive (n = 18) DPP-4i treatment for diabetes. The antifibrotic effects of linagliptin (a DPP-4i) were evaluated with quantitative real-time PCR for fibrosis markers (α-smooth muscle actin, collagen Iα, and fibronectin), a scratch assay, and a collagen gel contraction assay of primary cultured HTFs treated with TGF-ß1 and linagliptin. Western blotting analysis was performed to evaluate the levels of phosphorylated Smad2 and Smad3 in the presence of linagliptin. Results: The Kaplan-Meier curve for bleb survival was higher in patients who received DPP-4is (P = 0.017, log-rank test). The in vitro experiments demonstrated that treatment with linagliptin attenuated the elevated levels of fibrosis markers induced by TGF-ß1 in HTFs. Linagliptin treatment also prevented the migration and gel contraction of HTFs. Linagliptin inhibited the phosphorylation of Smad2 and Smad3, which is the canonical pathway of TGF-ß signaling. Conclusions: The current study indicates the potential effect of DPP-4is for maintaining bleb function after glaucoma filtering surgery in patients with diabetes with NVG. Our results demonstrate that linagliptin attenuates fibrotic change in HTFs by inhibiting TGF-ß/Smad signaling.

Vertebrate neurohypophysial hormones, i.e., vasopressin- and oxytocin-family peptides, exert versatile physiological actions via distinct G protein-coupled receptors. The neurohypophysial hormone receptor (NHR) family was classically categorized into four subtypes (V1aR, V1bR, V2R and OTR), while recent studies have identified seven subtypes (V1aR, V1bR, V2aR, V2bR, V2cR, V2dR and OTR; V2aR corresponds to the conventional V2R). The vertebrate NHR family were diversified via multiple gene duplication events at different scales. Despite intensive research effort in non-osteichthyes vertebrates such as cartilaginous fish and lamprey, the molecular phylogeny of the NHR family has not been fully understood. In the present study, we focused on the inshore hagfish (Eptatretus burgeri), another group of cyclostomes, and Arctic lamprey (Lethenteron camtschaticum) for comparison. Two putative NHR homologs, which were previously identified only in silico, were cloned from the hagfish and designated as ebV1R and ebV2R. In vitro, ebV1R, as well as two out of five Arctic lamprey NHRs, increased intracellular Ca2+ in response to exogenous neurohypophysial hormones. None of the examined cyclostome NHRs altered intracellular cAMP levels. Transcripts of ebV1R were detected in multiple tissues including the brain and gill, with intense hybridization signals in the hypothalamus and adenohypophysis, while ebV2R was predominantly expressed in the systemic heart. Similarly, Arctic lamprey NHRs showed distinct expression patterns, underscoring the multifunctionality of VT in the cyclostomes as in the gnathostomes. These results and exhaustive gene synteny comparisons provide new insights into the molecular and functional evolution of the neurohypophysial hormone system in vertebrates.

OBJECTIVES: Methotrexate (MTX) is associated with extensive side effects, including myelosuppression, interstitial pneumonia, and infection. It is, therefore, critical to establish whether its administration is required after achieving remission with tocilizumab (TCZ) and MTX combination therapy in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Therefore, the aim of this multicenter, observational, cohort study was to evaluate the feasibility of MTX discontinuation for the safety of these patients. METHODS: Patients with RA were administered TCZ, with or without MTX, for 3 years; those who received TCZ+MTX combination therapy were selected. After remission was achieved, MTX was discontinued without flare development in one group (discontinued [DISC] group, n = 33) and continued without flare development in another group (maintain [MAIN] group, n = 37). The clinical efficacy of TCZ+MTX therapy, patient background characteristics, and adverse events were compared between groups. RESULTS: The disease activity score in 28 joints-erythrocyte sedimentation rate (DAS28-ESR) at 3, 6, and 9 months was significantly lower in the DISC group (P < .05, P < .01, and P < .01, respectively). Further, the DAS28-ESR remission rate at 6 and 9 months and Boolean remission rate at 6 months were significantly higher in the DISC group (P < .01 for all). Disease duration was significantly longer in the DISC group (P < .05). Furthermore, the number of patients with stage 4 RA was significantly higher in the DISC group (P < .01). CONCLUSIONS: Once remission was achieved, MTX was discontinued in patients who responded favorably to TCZ+MTX therapy, despite the prolonged disease duration and stage progression.

Nitrogen-containing contaminants, such as 4-nitrophenol (4-NP), cause detrimental effects when discharged into the environment and thus should be reduced or removed from ecosystems. In this study, an Ag-loaded TiO2-SiO2-Fe3O4 (TSF) with a core-shell structure was employed for the photo-assisted reduction of 4-NP. Fe3O4, SiO2, and TiO2 in the core-shell structure served as a magnetic center, protective layer, and light absorber, respectively. To improve the reduction activity of 4-NP, Ag was loaded onto TSF under stirring, with a variation of the temperature (2-130 °C) and reaction time (1, 2, and 4 h). Under the optimized conditions, 5Ag-TSF (with 5 wt% of Ag) could promote the reduction of aqueous 4-NP solution (2 × 10-4 M, 75 mL) in the presence of NaBH4 (0.1 M, 5 mL) under irradiation by a metal halide lamp, affording over 98% reduction within 5 min and a rate constant of 0.185 min-1, demonstrating its promising activity. Moreover, due to the advantages of the core-shell structure, the magnetic properties of Fe3O4 were sufficient to enable facile recycling of the sample for further reaction; SiO2 could protect the Fe3O4 center from oxidation or reduction; TiO2 enabled Ag accommodation and absorbed light to generate electron-hole pairs. In summary, an Ag-loaded TiO2-SiO2-Fe3O4 sphere with high activity and recyclability for 4-NP reduction was prepared via a facile and simple stirring method, where the sample can be used as a promising material in environmental remediation.

The electrolysis of water using renewable energy is a promising approach to developing a sustainable hydrogen-based economy. To improve the efficiency of this process, it will be necessary to develop highly active electrocatalysts that promote the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In the present study, the OER activity of a nickel oxide electrocatalyst was dramatically improved following the addition of a diamine to the electrolyte solution during electrodeposition. Operando UV/vis absorption spectroscopy was used to assess a number of nickel catalysts containing various diamines and other organic compounds. The data indicate that Ni(II) complexes were formed with the diamines during electrodeposition. Consequently, the catalytic activity of these materials was enhanced based on increased concentrations of active reaction sites for the OER process. Ni K-edge X-ray absorption spectra showed that these catalysts were composed of γ-NiOOH with a Ni3.6+ valence state. The coordination of the diamine molecules to the γ-NiOOH produced structural distortion that contributed to improved OER activity. This structural distortion is likely the most important factor in enhancing the OER activity of inorganic-organic composite catalysts.

BACKGROUND: Group B streptococcus (GBS), a gram-positive coccus that occasionally causes neonatal sepsis or invasive infection in the elderly, has been considered a rare cause of endogenous bacterial endophthalmitis (EBE). However, the number of invasive GBS infections is increasing, particularly in elderly patients with underlying conditions such as diabetes mellitus (DM), cardiovascular disease and cancer. We report 6 cases of EBE caused by GBS and review the literature. METHODS: Retrospective case series and literature review. RESULTS: In the current case series, 6 eyes of 6 patients developed EBE caused by GBS. The average age was 73.5 years. The focus of infection included the urinary tract, cellulitis, arthritis, peritonitis, catheter-associated infection and endocarditis. Four patients had DM. While all 6 strains were sensitive to ß-lactams (penicillins and cephems), 4 strains were resistant to levofloxacin (no data for 1 isolate). Each case was treated with the systemic antibiotic to which the individual strain was sensitive. All cases showed poor visual acuity at presentation (decimal visual acuity: less than 0.03). Vitrectomy with intravitreal antibiotics injection was performed in 4 cases. Visual acuity recovered in 4 cases and did not recover in 2 cases, even after vitrectomy. The literature review of 53 eyes of 41 patients revealed that 60% of eyes finally lost all vision, and death occurred in 2 cases. Initial visual acuity of less than counting fingers was associated with a final outcome of lost vision. Of 41 patients, 13 (32%) had DM as an underlying medical condition. The most common extra-ocular infection focus was endocarditis (37%). CONCLUSIONS: DM is common in patients with EBE caused by GBS. While the 4 cases in the current report had a relatively good visual acuity outcome, despite poor initial visual acuity, the literature review indicated that EBE caused by GBS is generally a severe condition with a poor prognosis. The current study also indicates the importance of considering the possibility of endocarditis on encountering EBE caused by GBS.

PURPOSE: To report a unique case of nivolumab-induced uveitis and the results of a cytokine analysis of an intraocular fluid sample. CASE REPORT: A 61-year-old male patient undergoing treatment for renal cell carcinoma with nivolumab presented with bilateral uveitis. Severe anterior uveitis and vitreous opacity coincided with decreased visual acuity only in his left eye. Iris damage was present in this eye because of previous complicated cataract surgery. Vitrectomy was performed to remove the vitreous opacity, and visual acuity recovered postoperatively. A cytokine analysis of an intraocular fluid sample revealed a high level of interleukin-6, granulocyte-colony stimulating factor and interferon-inducible protein-10. CONCLUSION: This case indicates that nivolumab-induced uveitis might be more severe in eyes with a damaged iris, and that vitrectomy should be effective for vitreous opacity. A cytokine analysis of the ocular fluid indicated that multiple types of cell might be related to the inflammation process.

A key requirement in developing oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts is increasing their surface area. Herein, we report the design of a hierarchical micro/nanostructured catalyst. Based on polystyrene colloidal template electrodeposition, an ordered microcup array surrounded by nanoflakes was fabricated. The effect of the deposition time on the formation of the catalyst and the corresponding OER performance of the catalyst were investigated using scanning electron microscopy, in situ X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy, and electrochemical analysis. The in situ XAFS measurements indicate that the structure of the hierarchical structured catalyst is similar to that of γ-FeOOH. The electrochemical analysis indicates that the hierarchical catalyst has a large surface area and a low charge transfer resistance, which lead to its excellent catalytic performance for the OER. Our study provides new insights in designing high-performance OER catalysts. Moreover, the synthesized hierarchical micro/nanostructured catalyst could be used as a platform for further studies on low-cost iron-based electrocatalysts.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy of epiretinal membrane (ERM) surgery for patients with ERM and glaucoma. METHODS: We reviewed the medical records of 20 consecutive ERM patients with glaucoma, who underwent 27-gauge microincision vitrectomy surgery (27GMIVS) with internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling. The preoperative and 6-month postoperative visual field was tested with the Humphrey Field Analyzer (HFA) 24-2 program. Changes in threshold sensitivity in the HFA test points were analyzed point-by-point, with points classified into groups based on sensitivity as abnormal (less than 5th percentile in pattern deviation) or normal (all other points) and based on location as central (12 central points) or peripheral (all other points) with a linear mixed-effects model. RESULTS: Visual acuity and mean deviation improved postoperatively (P < 0.001 for both) in all patients. Threshold sensitivity in central or peripheral points that were abnormal preoperatively improved postoperatively (P=0.006 or P < 0.001, respectively). Threshold sensitivity also improved in the central normal test points (P=0.03), but not in the peripheral normal points (P=0.12). CONCLUSION: Visual acuity improved, and there was no visual field progression, after ERM surgery in glaucomatous eyes during a 6-month postoperative follow-up, suggesting that ERM and ILM removal using 27GMIVS may be effective even in glaucomatous eyes.

PURPOSE: To report a case of endophthalmitis associated with Purpureocillium lilacinum (P. lilacinum) during infliximab treatment for surgically induced necrotizing scleritis, successfully treated with 27-gauge vitrectomy. METHODS: A single case report. RESULTS: A 71-year-old man who had undergone immunosuppressive therapy, including infliximab, for surgically induced necrotizing scleritis (SINS) in his left eye complained of visual disturbance and eye pain in the eye. He had a past history of surgery for recurrent pterygium: pterygium excision, amnion transplantation with mitomycin C and limbal transplantation. Visual acuity in the left eye was counting fingers at 30 cm, and intraocular pressure was 3.0 mmHg. Slit-lamp examination revealed the presence of anterior chamber cells (3+), and a B-mode ultrasound scan showed a vitreous opacity. We made a diagnosis of endophthalmitis and performed 27-gauge microincision vitrectomy surgery (27GMIVS) with antibiotic perfusion of ceftazidime, vancomycin and voriconazole. Intraoperative findings included a fungus-like ball-shaped opacity in the vitreous, and a close-to-normal retinal appearance. A vitreous body culture identified the presence of P. lilacinum. After 2 months of antibacterial and antifungal therapy, inflammation decreased and visual acuity recovered to 20/100. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first report of a case of endophthalmitis associated with P. lilacinum during infliximab treatment for SINS. Scleral thinning due to necrotizing scleritis, especially during immunosuppressive therapy, is a risk factor for endophthalmitis. We found that 27GMIVS was a useful strategy for such a challenging clinical situation.

Endogenous fungal endophthalmitis (EFE) caused by disseminated fusariosis is a rare condition that generally has a poor outcome, even with intensive therapy. Here, we describe a case in which this type of EFE was diagnosed with vitreous sampling and was successfully treated with 25-gauge vitrectomy and antifungals, including liposomal amphotericin B and voriconazole. A 16-year-old male patient undergoing treatment for acute myeloid leukemia complained of eye pain and blurred vision in his right eye. Treatment was initiated for a vitreous opacity, possibly associated with herpetic retinitis, but the patient worsened and he was referred to us. Right-eye visual acuity was limited to light perception. We suspected endogenous endophthalmitis and performed 25-gauge vitrectomy with antibiotic perfusion of ceftazidime, vancomycin, and voriconazole. Vitreous culturing revealed the presence of Fusarium solani species complex, and enhanced computed tomography revealed disseminated fusariosis lesions in the lung, spleen, and the soft tissue of the left upper arm. The patient received antifungal treatment with liposomal amphotericin B and voriconazole, and these conditions were eliminated. Visual acuity recovered to 20/400 after additional vitrectomy for tractional retinal detachment and was maintained at this level during the 6-month follow-up period. The success of our treatment allowed the capture of optical coherence tomography images of the retina during fusarium-associated endogenous endophthalmitis and the follow-up period. Furthermore, this case showed that immediate vitrectomy for suspected EFE and intensive treatment can lead to a good clinical outcome.

AIM: To assess the prevalence, clinical characteristics, treatment, and outcomes of patients who developed ulcerative keratitis (UK) during the course of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in the modern biologic era. METHOD: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 589 patients with RA who visited our department between April 2003 and October 2014, and identified patients who developed UK. We also obtained data about clinical characteristics of RA and UK, complications, treatment, and both visual and life prognoses of these patients. RESULTS: Among 589 patients with RA, eight patients (1.4%) were diagnosed with UK. The mean age at the onset of RA was 61.0 years, while the mean age at the onset of UK was 73.0 years. Most of the patients were seropositive and had established RA with a relatively low disease activity. Secondary Sjögren's syndrome was observed in two patients. Peripheral UK occurred as a complication of scleritis, while central UK was not associated with scleritis. Although the mean duration of follow-up was only 3.7 years, visual and life prognoses were both tolerable with therapy, including the use of topical and systemic corticosteroids and calcineurin inhibitors, sometimes combined with biologic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) and corneal transplantation. CONCLUSION: This retrospective study demonstrated that the prevalence of UK in patients with RA was 1.4%. Immediate combination therapy, including topical and systemic corticosteroids and calcineurin inhibitors, together with biologic DMARDs and corneal transplantation, was effective for treating RA patients who developed UK in the modern biologic era.

AIM: Although Takayasu arteritis (TAK) and giant cell arteritis (GCA) have been considered as distinct disease entities, similarities of these diseases have been recently reported. However, little data is available regarding this issue in Japanese patients with TAK and GCA. In addition, the classification criteria for TAK established in 1990 by the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) have been criticized due to the age restriction for disease onset (≤ 40 years). Thus, we aimed to compare the clinical characteristics of Japanese patients with TAK and those with GCA and to clarify whether clinical differences existed between patients with early-onset (≤ 40 years) and late-onset (> 40 years) TAK. METHODS: We enrolled 86 patients with TAK and nine with GCA who visited our department from 1990 to 2014. The diagnoses of TAK and GCA were based on the criteria of the Japanese Circulation Society and the ACR, respectively. RESULTS: Mean ages at onset for TAK and GCA were 36.4 and 71.0 years, respectively. Patients with TAK had significantly higher incidences of aortic regurgitation and carotid and subclavian arterial involvement, lower frequencies of polymyalgia rheumatica, and better prognoses than those with GCA. In contrast, the clinical characteristics, distribution of arterial lesions, treatments administered, and prognoses of patients with early- and late-onset TAK were comparable. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggested that TAK and GCA differed substantially, and that the age restriction (≤ 40 years) may not be necessary for the diagnosis of TAK.

AIM: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disease. Most RA patients develop cartilage and bone destruction, and various proteinases are involved in the destruction of extracellular matrix of cartilage and bone. The aim of this study is to evaluate the utility of our newly developed method to measure total gelatinolytic activity. We adopted this method for measurement in synovial fluid from RA patients treated by the anti-rheumatic drug etanercept (ETN), a recombinant human soluble tumor necrosis factor receptor fusion protein, and compared the findings with clinical and laboratory data. METHODS: Enzymatic activity of synovial fluid was analyzed by zymography using gelatin-coated film, and compared with the index of Disease Activity Score of 28 joints - C-reactive protein (DAS28-CRP), CRP and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-3 level before and after ETN therapy. RESULTS: Synovial fluids of 19 patients were collected before and after administration of ETN therapy. In nine of 19 patients, who showed a decrease in gelatin-degrading activity in synovial fluid, the index of DAS28-CRP (4.85-2.85, ΔDAS = -2.00) and CRP (3.30-0.94 mg/dL, ΔCRP = -2.36) was alleviated after ETN therapy, while cases with no change or an increase in gelatin-degrading activity showed a modest improvement in clinical data: DAS28-CRP (4.23-3.38, ΔDAS = -0.85) and CRP (1.70-0.74 mg/dL, ΔCRP = -0.96). CONCLUSION: Our newly developed method for measurement of gelatin-degrading activity in synovial fluid from RA patients is highly practicable and useful for predicting the effect of ETN therapy.

In the coastal squid Loligo bleekeri, each male produces one of two types of fertilization-competent spermatozoa (eusperm) that exhibit morphological and behavioral differences. Large "consort" males produce short-tailed spermatozoa that display free-swimming behavior when ejaculated into seawater. Small "sneaker" males, on the other hand, produce long-tailed spermatozoa that exhibit a self-swarming trait after ejaculation. To understand the molecular basis for adaptive traits employed by alternative male mating tactics, we performed the transcriptome deep sequencing (RNA-seq) and proteome analyses to search for differences in testicular mRNAs and sperm proteins, respectively. From mature male testes we identified a total of 236,455 contigs (FPKM ≧1) where 3789 and 2789 were preferentially (≧10-fold) expressed in consort and sneaker testes, respectively. A proteomic analysis detected 4302 proteins in the mature sperm as post-translational products. A strongly biased (≧10-fold) distribution occurred in 55 consort proteins and 61 sneaker proteins. There was no clear mRNA-protein correlation, making a ballpark estimate impossible for not only overall protein abundance but also the degree of biased sperm type expressed in the spermatozoa. A family encoding dynein heavy chain gene, however, was found to be biased towards sneakers, whereas many enzymes involving energy metabolism were heavily biased towards consort spermatozoa. The difference in flagellar length matched exactly the different amount of tubulins. From these results we hypothesize that discrete differential traits in dimorphic eusperm arose from a series of innovative alterations in the intracellular components of spermatozoa.

cAMP/PKA/ERK/CREB signaling linked to CRE-mediated transcription is crucial for learning and memory. We originally found nobiletin as a natural compound that stimulates this intracellular signaling and exhibits anti-dementia action in animals. Citrus reticulata or C. unshiu peels are employed as "chinpi" and include a small amount of nobiletin. We here provide the first evidence for beneficial pharmacological actions on the cAMP/PKA/ERK/CREB cascade of extracts from nobiletin-rich C.reticulata peels designated as Nchinpi, the nobiletin content of which was 0.83 ± 0.13% of the dry weight or 16-fold higher than that of standard chinpi extracts. Nchinpi extracts potently facilitated CRE-mediated transcription in cultured hippocampal neurons, whereas the standard chinpi extracts showed no such activity. Also, the Nchinpi extract, but not the standard chinpi extract, stimulated PKA/ERK/CREB signaling. Interestingly, treatment with the Nchinpi extract at the concentration corresponding to approximately 5 µM nobiletin more potently facilitated CRE-mediated transcriptional activity than did 30 µM nobiletin alone. Consistently, sinensetin, tangeretin, 6-demethoxynobiletin, and 6-demethoxytangeretin were also identified as bioactive substances in Nchinpi that facilitated the CRE-mediated transcription. Purified sinensetin enhanced the transcription to a greater degree than nobiletin. Furthermore, samples reconstituted with the four purified compounds and nobiletin in the ratio of each constituent's content in the extract showed activity almost equal to that of the Nchinpi extract to stimulate CRE-mediated transcription. These findings suggest that above four compounds and nobiletin in the Nchinpi extract mainly cooperated to facilitate potently CRE-mediated transcription linked to the upstream cAMP/PKA/ERK/CREB pathway in hippocampal neurons.

Aristolochic acids (AAs), contained in Chinese herbal preparations, have been considered to induce nephropathy. In order to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of AA-induced nephrotoxicity, we have elucidated the interaction of human organic anion transporters (hOATs) with AAs using their stable cell lines. AA-I and AA-II inhibited organic anion uptake by hOAT1, hOAT3, and hOAT4 in dose-dependent manners. Treatment of hOAT3 with AA-I resulted in a significant reduction in viability compared with that of mock, which was rescued by the organic anion transport inhibitor probenecid. In conclusion, hOAT3-mediated AA-I uptake may be associated with the induction of nephrotoxicity.

A 66-year-old-woman was hospitalized with acute pancreatitis, obstructive jaundice, and tumor of the upper arm in September, 2008. At first, we diagnosed primary pancreatic cancer involving left lung and hilar lymph node, left brachial muscle metastasis and dissemination to the left pleura, but the histological diagnosis of the upper arm tumor was diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. In addition, endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) biopsy from the pancreatic tumor showed diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, the same as the upper arm tumor. We experienced a rare case of multifocal extranodal non-Hodgkin lymphoma and EUS-FNA was useful for the diagnosis pancreatic tumor.

CD5 is a T-cell marker that is expressed in mature B cell malignancies and other B cell chronic lymphoproliferative disorders, but the biologic function of CD5 is unknown. We report a 68-year-old woman with B-cell prolymphocytic leukemia (B-PLL) expressing CD5 antigen. On admission, jaundice and hepatosplenomegaly were noted. Hematological examination demonstrated a platelet count of 2.8 x 10(4)/microl and a white blood cell count of 19,900/microl with 69% PLL cells. Surface marker analysis of the PLL cells was positive for CD5, CD19, CD20, sIgM, and was negative for CD23, and cyclin D1 was negative in immunostaining.
