RESUMO

High-performance separation materials for oil-water emulsions are crucial to environmental protection and resource recovery; however, most existing fibrous separation materials are subject to large pore size and low porosity, resulting in limited separation performance. Herein, we create high-performance membranes consisting of spherical-beaded nanofibers and nanoarchitectured networks (nano-nets) using electrostatic spinning/netting technology, for water-in-oil emulsion separation. By manipulating the nonequilibrium stretching of jets, spherical-beaded nanofibers capable of generating a robust microelectric field are fabricated as scaffolds, on which charged droplets are induced to eject and phase separate to self-assemble nano-nets with small pores. Benefiting from 3D undulating networks with cavities originating from 2D nano-nets supported by 1D spherical-beaded nanofibers, the membranes exhibit under-oil superhydrophobicity (>152°), a striking separation performance with an efficiency of >99.2% and a flux of 5775 L m-2 h-1, together with wide pressure applicability, antifouling, and reusability. This work may open up new horizons in developing fibrous materials for separation and purification.

RESUMO

The patch with a superlubricated surface shows great potential for the prevention of postoperative adhesion during soft tissue repair. However, the existing patches suffer from the destruction of topography during superlubrication coating and lack of pro-healing capability. Herein, we demonstrate a facile and versatile strategy to develop a Janus nanofibrous patch (J-NFP) with antiadhesion and reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging functions. Specifically, sequential electrospinning is performed with initiators and CeO2 nanoparticles (CeNPs) embedded on the different sides, followed by subsurface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization for grafting zwitterionic polymer brushes, introducing superlubricated skin on the surface of single nanofibers. The poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate) brush-grafted patch retains fibrous topography and shows a coefficient of friction of around 0.12, which is reduced by 77% compared with the pristine fibrous patch. Additionally, a significant reduction in protein, platelet, bacteria, and cell adhesion is observed. More importantly, the CeNPs-embedded patch enables ROS scavenging as well as inhibits pro-inflammatory cytokine secretion and promotes anti-inflammatory cytokine levels. Furthermore, the J-NFP can inhibit tissue adhesion and promote repair of both rat skin wounds and intrauterine injuries. The present strategy for developing the Janus patch exhibits enormous prospects for facilitating soft tissue repair.

RESUMO

The expeditious growth of wearable electronic devices has boomed the development of versatile smart textiles for personal health-related applications. In practice, integrated high-performance systems still face challenges of compromised breathability, high cost, and complicated manufacturing processes. Herein, a breathable fibrous membrane with dual-driven heating and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding performance is developed through a facile process of electrospinning followed by targeted conformal deposition. The approach constructs a robust hierarchically coaxial heterostructure consisting of elastic polymers as supportive "core" and dual-conductive components of polypyrrole and copper sulfide (CuS) nanosheets as continuous "sheath" at the fiber level. The CuS nanosheets with metal-like electrical conductivity demonstrate the promising potential to substitute the expensive conductive nano-materials with a complex fabricating process. The as-prepared fibrous membrane exhibits high electrical conductivity (70.38 S cm-1), exceptional active heating effects, including solar heating (saturation temperature of 69.7 °C at 1 sun) and Joule heating (75.2 °C at 2.9 V), and impressive EMI shielding performance (50.11 dB in the X-band), coupled with favorable air permeability (161.4 mm s-1 at 200 Pa) and efficient water vapor transmittance (118.9 g m-2 h). This work opens up a new avenue to fabricate versatile wearable devices for personal thermal management and health protection.

RESUMO

Interstitial cystitis (IC) is a chronic bladder inflammation. Inhibition of prostaglandin G/H synthase 2 (PTGS2) is the most common method for controlling inflammation-related diseases. This study aimed to analyze the effects of hispidulin on the PTGS2 and NOD-like receptor thermal protein domain-associated protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammation in experimental IC models. A binding activity between hispidulin and PTGS2 was measured using molecular docking. Human urothelial cells (SV-HUC-1) were stimulated by 2 ng/mL of interleukin (IL)-1ß for 24 h and cultured in a medium with different concentrations of hispidulin (2.5, 5, 10, 20 µM) for 24 h to observe the expressions of PTGS2 and NLRP3 protein. Cells overexpressing PTGS2 were established by PTGS2 cDNA transfection. In the IL-1ß-treated cells, the NLRP3 inflammasome was measured after 20 µM hispidulin treatment. In rats, animals were performed with three injections of 40 mg/kg cyclophosphamide (CYP) and orally treated with 50 mg/kg/day hispidulin or ibuprofen for 3 days. The bladder pain was measured using Von Frey filaments, and the bladder pathology was observed using hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining. The expressions of PTGS2 and NLRP3 inflammasome were also observed in the bladder tissues. A good binding activity was found between hispidulin and PTGS2 (score = - 8.9 kcal/mol). The levels of PTGS2 and NLRP3 inflammasome were decreased with the hispidulin dose increase in the IL-1ß-treated cells (p < 0.05). Cells overexpressing PTGS2 weakened the protective effects of hispidulin in the IL-1ß-treated cells (p < 0.01). In the CYP-treated rats, hispidulin treatment improved the bladder pain through decreasing the nociceptive score (p < 0.01) and suppressed the bladder inflammation through suppressing the expressions of PTGS2 and NLRP3 inflammasome in bladder tissues (p < 0.01). Additionally, the results of ibuprofen treatment were similar to the effects of hispidulin in the CYP-treated rats. This study demonstrates that hispidulin may be a new alternative drug for the IC treatment that binds PTGS2 to perform its functions.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Hot flashes are the common and debilitating symptom among prostate cancer (PCa) patients undergoing androgen deprivation therapy (ADT). Strong evidence from multiple rigorously designed studies indicated that pharmacological option such as venlafaxine provides partial relief, but the tolerability is poor when dose is not tapered. Hence, alternative therapy is needed. Previous studies reported that acupuncture may be helpful in the management of hot flashes. However, the insufficient randomized controlled trial limited the quality of evidence. METHODS: Five hospitals will recruit 120 acupuncture naïve patients with moderate-to-severe hot flashes after prostate cancer received ADT in China from February 2023 to December 2024. Participants will be randomly 2:1:1 allocated to the 18 sessions of verum acupuncture at true acupuncture points plus usual care, 18 sessions of non-penetrating sham acupuncture at non-acupuncture points plus usual care, or usual care alone over 6 weeks. The primary outcome measure is the change of mean weekly hot flashes symptom severity score (HFSSS) at the end of treatment compared with baseline. EXPECTED RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: We will be able to measure the effectiveness of acupuncture for patients with PCa suffering from ADT-induced hot flashes and whether acupuncture is superior to sham acupuncture and usual care. The proposed acupuncture treatment might provide an alternative option for those patients. TRIAL REGISTRATION: Clinicaltrials.gov (NCT05069467).

RESUMO

Oxide ceramics are widely used as thermal protection materials due to their excellent structural properties and earth abundance. However, in extremely high-temperature environments (above 1500 °C), the explosive growth of grain size causes irreversible damage to the microstructure of oxide ceramics, thus exhibiting poor thermomechanical stability. This problem, which may lead to catastrophic accidents, remains a great challenge for oxide ceramic materials. Here, a novel strategy of phase transition modulation is proposed to control the grain growth at high temperatures in oxide ceramic nanofibers, realizing effective regulation of the crystalline forms as well as the size uniformity of primary grains, and thus suppressing the malignant growth of the grains. The resulting oxide ceramic nanofibers have excellent mechanical strength and flexibility, delivering an average tensile strength as high as 1.02 GPa after being exposed to 1700 °C for 30 min, and can withstand thousands of flexural cycles without obvious damage. This work may provide new insight into the development of advanced oxide ceramic materials that can serve in extremely high-temperature environments with long-term durability.

RESUMO

Non-biodegradable polypropylene, which poses a serious threat to the environment, is the most utilized material in air filtration systems. Moreover, under conditions of high temperature and high humidity, the electrostatic charge in melt-blown nonwoven fabrics treated with traditional corona electrets will quickly dissipate. Here, biodegradable polylactic acid, calcium stearate, and an innovative hydrocharging technique are reported to develop environmentally friendly polylactic acid/calcium stearate hydrocharging melt-blown nonwoven fabrics with high charge stability. Compared with polylactic acid melt-blown nonwoven fabrics, the crystallization structure and charge storage of polylactic acid/calcium stearate melt-blown nonwoven fabrics have been greatly improved due to the presence of calcium stearate. In PM0.3, it exhibited a high filtration efficiency (96.78%), a low pressure drop (65.20 Pa), and a good quality factor (0.053 Pa-1), which can meet the N95 respirator standard. Furthermore, it is worth mentioning that the filtration performance remained at a high level (>95.00%) after 2 months. Importantly, based on the test and analysis of surface electrostatic potential, crystallization, and charge storage and distribution, we proposed plausible charge generation and stable storage mechanisms. It demonstrated more potential for electret air filtration and smart respirators as the further possible step of research in the field.

RESUMO

Pelvic ectopic kidney is a congenital anomaly with a higher probability of hydronephrosis than a normal kidney. Few studies have reported cases of pelvic ectopic kidney with hydronephrosis in adults treated with robot-assisted laparoscopic pyeloplasty (RALP). We performed RALP on a 22-year-old male and he recovered well after the procedure. The patient's pain disappeared after surgery. No complications occurred during the perioperative period and had a rapid postoperative recovery.

RESUMO

Development of rapid and effective hemostatic materials has always been the focus of research in the healthcare field. Nanofibrous materials which recapitulate the delicate nano-topography feature of fibrin fibers produced during natural hemostatic process, offer large length-to-diameter ratio and surface area, tunable porous structure, and precise control in architecture, showing great potential for staunching bleeding. Here we present a comprehensive review of advances in nanofibrous hemostatic materials, focusing on the following three important parts: structural design, fabrication methods, and hemostatic mechanisms. This review begins with an introduction to the physiological hemostatic mechanism and current commercial hemostatic agents. Then, it focuses on recent progress in electrospun nanofibrous hemostatic materials in terms of composition and structure control, surface modification, and in-situ deposition. The article emphasizes the development of three-dimensional (3D) electrospun nanofibrous materials and their emerging evolution for improving hemostatic function. Next, it discusses the fabrication of self-assembling peptide or protein-mimetic peptide nanofibers, co-assembling supramolecular nanofibers, as well as other nanofibrous hemostatic agents. Further, the article highlights the external and intracavitary hemostatic management based on various nanofiber aggregates. In the end, this review concludes with the current challenges and future perspectives of nanofibrous hemostatic materials. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: This article reviews recent advances in nanofibrous hemostatic materials including fabrication methods, composition and structural control, performance improvement, and hemostatic mechanisms. A variety of methods including electrospinning, self-assembly, grinding and refining, template synthesis, and chemical vapor deposition, have been developed to prepare nanofibrous materials. These methods provide robustness in control of the nanofiber architecture in the forms of hydrogels, two-dimensional (2D) membranes, 3D sponges, or composites, showing promising potential in the external and intracavitary hemostasis and wound healing applications. This review will be of great interest to the broad readers in the field of hemostatic materials and multifunctional biomaterials.

RESUMO

Recently, MnO2-coated polymeric filters have shown promising performance in room-temperature formaldehyde abatement. However, a commonly known concern of MnO2/polymer composites is either MnO2 crystal encapsulation or weak adhesion. This work reports a low-cost high-throughput and green strategy to produce binder-free MnO2-nonwoven composite air filters. The production approach is energy saving and environmentally friendly, which combines MnO2 crystal coating on bicomponent polyolefin spunbond nonwovens and subsequent heat immobilizing of crystals, followed by the removal of weakly bonded MnO2. The binder-free MnO2-nonwoven composites show firm catalyst-fiber adhesion, a gradient porous structure, and excellent formaldehyde removal capability (94.5% ± 0.4%) at room temperature, and the reaction rate constant is 0.040 min-1. In contrast to the MnO2-nonwoven composites containing organic binders, the HCHO removal of binder-free filters increased by over 4%. This study proposes an alternative solution in producing catalyst/fabric composite filters for formaldehyde removal.

RESUMO

Radiotherapy and chemotherapy remain the main therapeutics for colorectal cancer. However, due to their inevitable side effects on nomal tissues, it is necessary to evaluate the toxicity of radio-/chemotherapy regimens. The newly developedin vitrohigh throughput strategy is promising for these assessments. Nevertheless, the currently monolayer culture condition adopted in the preclinical screening processesin vitrohas been proved not so efficient asin vivosince its poor physiological similarity toin vivomicroenvironment. Herein, we fabricated microporous SiO2nanofiber mats and further bioactivated with deoxycholic acid (DCA) to mimic the chemical signals in the colorectal cancer microenvironment forin vitroregimen assessment of radiotherapy and chemotherapy. The colorectal cancer cells contacted with the DCA-modified SiO2nanofiber (SiO2-DCA NF) mats spatially, and the human intestinal epithelial cell on SiO2-DCA NF mats exhibited better x-ray and cisplatin tolerance. The distinguishable irradiation and drug tolerance of cells on SiO2-DCA NF mats indicated that the actual microenvironment of intestine might instruct colorectal cancer differently compared with the common biological experiments. The presented DCA-modified microporous SiO2nanofibrous mats endowing a better mimicry of colorectal micro-environment, would provide a promising platform forin vitroassessment of radio-/chemotherapy regimens.

RESUMO

Poisons and poisonous weapons in armed conflict, especially chemical warfare agents (CWAs), pose serious threats to global security. Porous materials have recently been regarded as promising candidates to defend personnel in a CWA-contaminated environment, but challenges remain for integrating these materials into protective garments without sacrificing the intrinsic flexibility of fibers. Here, we report a rigid-flexible coupling hypercross-linking methodology to create flexible sponge-like nanofibers featuring hierarchical radial gradient porous nanoarchitectures, in which the inner structure is a mesoporous multichambered network, and the outer structure is a dense domain with a microporous network structure. Experimental and computational evidence supports the contention that sponge nanofibers with distinctive pore topology and robust bendability can be designed by manipulating the flexibility of building blocks. The resulting heterogeneous nanofibers exhibit integrated properties of spatially selective superstructures, abundant micropores, interconnected mesopores, a high surface area (579 m2 g-1), remarkable flexibility, and exceptional CWA affinity, which are extraordinarily effective for adsorptive performance (498 mg g-1). The successful synthesis of these materials might inspire the development of chemical protective materials in an efficient, self-standing, and structurally adaptive form.

RESUMO

Due to the abundance and easy availability of solar energy resources, solar-driven water evaporation provides a sustainable way to obtain clean water from wastewater and seawater. However, achieving a high evaporation rate with excellent light absorption remains a critical challenge in the structural regulation of evaporators. Herein, inspired by the natural transpiration process in plants (blue spruce), we designed a three-dimensional (3D) cone-shaped solar steam generator based on vertical polypyrrole nanowires-coated fabric (VPPyNWs-fabric). The microstructure design of polypyrrole (PPy) increases the solar energy absorption of the incident light through multiple reflections between the VPPyNWs, while the macrostructure design of the 3D evaporator possesses an enlarged surface area for energy harvesting, wide path for water supply, and open structure for vapor diffusion. As a proof of concept, the as-obtained 3D VPPyNWs-fabric-based solar steam generator demonstrates a fast water evaporation rate of 2.32 kg m-2 h-1 with high solar absorption of 97% and solar-to-vapor conversion efficiency of 98.56% at 1 kW m-2 energy density. In addition, the solar steam generator can be steadily applied in various water conditions, e.g., seawater, dye wastewater, and acidic and alkaline wastewater. This high-performance evaporator via 3D macro- and microstructure design offers a new avenue for better utilization of solar energy.

RESUMO

Salinomycin is a polyether antiprotozoal antibiotic that is widely used as an animal food additive. Some antifungal, antiparasitic, antiviral and anti-inflammatory activities have been reported for salinomycin. Recently, the anti-cancer effect of salinomycin has been demonstrated in breast cancer; however, the underlying mechanism remains unknown. The present study aimed to investigate the functional roles of salinomycin in the progression of prostate cancer cells using the DU145 and PC-3 cell lines. Western blotting and reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction were performed to detect the expression of oxidative stress and endoplasmic reticulum stress-related molecules, and flow cytometry was performed to detect the apoptosis rate of DU145 and PC-3 cells after salinomycin treatment. The results demonstrated that salinomycin inhibited the viability and induced the apoptosis of PC-3 and DU145 cells in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, salinomycin increased the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OH-dG) and the lipid peroxidation. In addition, salinomycin induced the activation of unfolded protein response and endoplasmic reticulum stress in DU145 and PC-3 cells, as indicated by the elevated expression of binding immunoglobulin protein, activating transcription factor 4, phosphorylated eukaryotic initiation factor 2α, phosphorylated protein kinase RNA-like endoplasmic reticulum kinase and C/EBP homologous protein. In addition, salinomycin significantly downregulated the expression of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), heme oxygenase-1, NAD(P)H quinone dehydrogenase 1 and glutamate-cysteine ligase catalytic subunit and decreased the activity of the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase in PC-3 and DU145 cells. Furthermore, the Nrf2 activator, tert-butylhydroquinone, significantly reversed the therapeutic effects of salinomycin by stimulating the Nrf2 pathway and increasing the activity of antioxidant enzymes. Taken together, these findings demonstrated that salinomycin may trigger apoptosis by inducing oxidative and ER stress in prostate cancer cells via suppressing Nrf2 signaling.

RESUMO

Skin-like flexible membrane with excellent water resistance and moisture permeability is an urgent need in the wound dressing field to provide comfort and protection for the wound site. Despite efforts that have been made in the development of waterproof and breathable (W&B) membranes, the in-situ electrospinning of W&B membranes suitable for irregular wound surfaces as wound dressings still faces huge challenges. In the current work, a portable electrospinning device with multi-functions, including adjustable perfusion speed for a large range from 0.05 mL/h to 10 mL/h and high voltage up to 11 kV, was designed. The thymol-loaded ethanol-soluble polyurethane (EPU) skin-like W&B nanofibrous membranes with antibacterial activity were fabricated via the custom-designed device. Ultimately, the resultant nanofibrous membranes composed of EPU, fluorinated polyurethane (FPU), and thymol presented uniform structure, robust waterproofness with the hydrostatic pressure of 17.6 cm H2O, excellent breathability of 3.56 kg m-2 d-1, the high tensile stress of 1.83 MPa and tensile strain of 453%, as well as high antibacterial activity. These results demonstrate that the new-type device has potential as a portable electrospinning apparatus for the fabrication of antibacterial membranes directly on the wound surface and puts a new way for the development of portable electrospinning devices.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common aggressive primary cancer occurring in the brain tissue. GBM accounts 16% of primary brain tumors and half of gliomas. Additionally, the incidence of GBM is increases with aging, and reaches the peak at the age of 75 to 84 years. The survival of patients with GBM remains at a low level, only less than 5% patients diagnosed with GBM survive for 5 years. Temozolomide (TMZ) is a DNA alkylating agent and is currently a first line chemotherapeutic treatment for GBM. TMZ combined with radiation therapy has been shown to prolong the overall survival (OS) to 14.6 months compared with 12.1 months for radiation therapy alone. NF-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) is a transcription factor that contains seven functional domains. The binding of Keap1 to Nrf2 is a central regulator of the cellular defense mechanism against environmental stresses. METHODS: First, Nrf2 overexpression and inhibition models were constructed in U251 cells using transfection. The percentage of viable cells was detected using the MTT assay. Then, the expression of the HO-1 regulator was detected using qPCR, and the concentrations of oxidative stress related factors were detected using ELISAs. The levels of proteins related to oxidative stress and the Ras/Raf/MEK signaling pathway was detected using western blotting analysis. RESULTS: We initially established Nrf2 inhibition and activation cell models in U251 cells and found that the inhibition of Nrf2 expression decreased the mRNA and protein levels of the anti-oxidative enzymes, as well as the secretion of these enzymes into the cellular microenvironment. These effects might be mediated by the inhibition of Ras/Raf/MEK signaling pathway, leading to the inhibition of cellular proliferation. CONCLUSIONS: Inhibition of Nrf2 expression might enhance the effect of TMZ on the treatment of GBM and might be a new therapeutic strategy.

RESUMO

Waterproof and breathable membranes (WBMs) are highly demanded worldwide due to their promising applications in outdoor protective clothing, medical hygiene, and electronic devices. However, the design of such materials integrated with environmental friendliness and high functionality has been considered a long-standing challenge. Herein, we report the green-solvent-processed polyamide fibrous membranes with amphiphobicity and bonding structure via ethanol-based electrospinning and water-based impregnating techniques, endowing the fibrous membranes with outstanding water/oil/dust-resistant and good breathable properties. The developed green smart fibrous membranes exhibit integrated properties with robust water and oil intrusion pressures of 101.2 and 32.4 kPa, respectively, excellent dust removal efficiency of above 99.9%, good water vapor transmission rate of 11.2 kg m-2 d-1, air permeability of 2.6 mm s-1, tensile strength of 15.6 MPa, and strong toughness of 22.8 MJ m-3, enabling the membranes to protect human beings and electronic devices effectively. This work may shed light on designing the next generation green smart fibrous WBMs for protective textiles.

RESUMO

Environmentally sound composites reinforced with natural fibers or particles interest many researchers and engineers due to their great potential to substitute the traditional composites reinforced with glass fibers. However, the sensitivity of natural fiber-reinforced composites to water has limited their applications. In this paper, wood powder-reinforced polypropylene composites (WPCs) with various wood content were prepared and subjected to water absorption tests to study the water absorption procedure and the effect of water absorbed in the specimens on the mechanical properties. Water soaking tests were carried out by immersion of composite specimens in a container of distilled water maintained at three different temperatures, 23, 60 and 80 °C. The results showed that the moisture absorption content was related to wood powder percentage and they had a positive relationship. The transfer process of water molecules in the sample was found to follow the Fickian model and the diffusion constant increased with elevated water temperature. In addition, tensile and bending tests of both dry and wet composite samples were conducted and the results indicated that water absorbed in composite specimens degraded their mechanical properties. The tensile strength and modulus of the composites reinforced with 15, 30, 45 wt % wood powder decreased by 5.79%, 17.2%, 32.06% and 25.31%, 33.6%, 47.3% respectively, compared with their corresponding dry specimens. The flexural strength and modulus of the composite samples exhibited a similar result. Furthermore, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) also confirmed that the detrimental effect of water molecules on the composite specimens.

Controlling thermal energy is one of the biggest concerns along with the progress of human civilization for thousands of years. Current thermal comfort devices are mainly based on materials that are bulky, rigid, and heavy, largely limiting their widespread practical applications. It still remains a challenge to develop highly lightweight, flexible, and efficient electrical heaters for personal thermal management and local climate control. In this work, we present a high-performance composite infrared radiation heating fabric (IRHF), which mainly consists of two layers of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) fabrics and one sandwiched layer of carbon nanofibers embedded with different inorganic nanoparticles. A copper electrode sheet was connected with the carbon nanofibers to form a conductive heating circuit. The permanent spontaneous polarization of both carbon nanofibers and infrared radiation nanoparticles can facilitate an enhanced current in the heater by creating an additional electrical field, which results in a fast electrothermal response and favorable heat preservation. The constructed IRHF could achieve an increase in the temperature to 43 °C from room temperature in 1 min under a voltage of 30 V, with an electrothermal conversion efficiency up to 78.99%. With a collection of compelling features such as good thermal stability, excellent flexibility and breathability, and high electrical conductivity and energy conversion efficiency, the fabricated sandwich-structured IRHF can open up new opportunities to develop smart heating textiles and wearable heating clothes in many fields.
