RESUMO

Background: Lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD), a global leading cause of cancer deaths, remains inadequately addressed by current protein biomarkers. Our study focuses on developing a protein-based risk signature for improved prognosis of LUAD. Methods: We employed the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO)-COX algorithm on The Cancer Genome Atlas database to construct a prognostic model incorporating six proteins (CD49B, UQCRC2, SMAD1, FOXM1, CD38, and KAP1). The model's performance was assessed using principal component, Kaplan-Meier (KM), and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis, indicating strong predictive capability. The model stratifies LUAD patients into distinct risk groups, with further analysis revealing its potential as an independent prognostic factor. Additionally, we developed a predictive nomogram integrating clinicopathologic factors, aimed at assisting clinicians in survival prediction. Gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) and examination of the tumor immune microenvironment were conducted, highlighting metabolic pathways in high-risk genes and immune-related pathways in low-risk genes, indicating varied immunotherapy sensitivity. Validation through immunohistochemistry from the Human Protein Atlas (HPA) database and immunofluorescence staining of clinical samples was performed, particularly focusing on CD38 expression. Results: Our six-protein model (CD49B, UQCRC2, SMAD1, FOXM1, CD38, KAP1) effectively categorized LUAD patients into high and low-risk groups, confirmed by principal component, KM, and ROC analyses. The model showed high predictive accuracy, with distinct survival differences between risk groups. Notably, CD38, traditionally seen as protective, was paradoxically associated with poor prognosis in LUAD, a finding supported by immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence data. GSEA revealed that high-risk genes are enriched in metabolic pathways, while low-risk genes align with immune-related pathways, suggesting better immunotherapy response in the latter group. Conclusions: This study presented a novel prognostic protein model for LUAD, highlighting the CD38 expression paradox and enhancing our understanding of protein roles in lung cancer progression. It offered new clinical tools for prognosis prediction and provided assistance for future lung cancer pathogenesis research.

OBJECTIVES: Oxytropis DC is a perennial plant of Fabaceae family, which is widely distributed in the northern temperate zone. It is known as "locoweed" because of its toxic component swainsonine. However, it is widely used in Tibetan medicine and Mongolian medicine, mainly for the treatment of heat-clearing and detoxifying, pain-relieving, anti-inflammatory, hemostasis, and other diseases. To provide a basis for the further development and utilization of Oxytropis DC, the pieces of literature about the application, phytochemistry, pharmacological action, and toxicity of Oxytropis DC were reviewed and analyzed. KEY FINDINGS: A total of 373 chemical constituents were found from Oxytropis DC, including flavonoids, alkaloids, steroids, terpenoids, and others. Pharmacological actions mainly include antitumor, antioxidation, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antibacterial, antifibrosis, and other pharmacological actions, among them, the antitumor effect is particularly prominent. SUMMARY: At present, studies on its pharmacological effects are mainly concentrated on the extracts, some flavonoids, and alkaloids. In the follow-up studies, research on the pharmacological activities of the other chemical constituents in Oxytropis should be strengthened. It has the potential to pave the way for research and development of novel Oxytropis medicines.

Constructed wetlands (CWs) are widely used to treat wastewater, while innovative studies are needed to support resource conservation, enhance multi-functionality, and improve the effectiveness of effluent usage. This study assessed the potential of CW's multiple functions by combining low-rank coal (lignite) and industrial waste (steel slag) in different configurations as CW substrates. The results of scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and metagenomic sequencing showed that the experimental treatment with lignite and steel slag mixtures had the highest multi-functionality, including efficient nutrient removal and carbon sequestration, as well as hydroponic crop production. Lignite and steel slag were mixed to form lignite-steel slag particle clusters, where Ca2+ dissolved on the surface of steel slag was combined with PO43- in wastewater to form Ca3(PO4)2 precipitation for phosphorus removal. A biofilm grew on the surface of lignite in this cluster, and OH- released from steel slag promoted lignite to release fulvic acid, which provided a carbon source for heterotrophic microorganisms and promoted denitrification. Moreover, fulvic acid enhanced carbon sequestration in CWs by increasing the biomass of Phragmites australis. The effluent from lignite-steel slag CW increased cherry tomato yield and quality while saving N and P applications. These results provide new ideas for the "green" and economic development of CW technology.

The ability to precisely control the activity of defined cell populations enables studies of their physiological roles and may provide therapeutic applications. While prior studies have shown that magnetic activation of ferritin-tagged ion channels allows cell-specific modulation of cellular activity, the large size of the constructs made the use of adeno-associated virus, AAV, the vector of choice for gene therapy, impractical. In addition, simple means for generating magnetic fields of sufficient strength have been lacking. Toward these ends, we first generated a novel anti-ferritin nanobody that when fused to transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily V member 1, TRPV1, enables direct binding of the channel to endogenous ferritin in mouse and human cells. This smaller construct can be delivered in a single AAV and we validated that it robustly enables magnetically induced cell activation in vitro . In parallel, we developed a simple benchtop electromagnet capable of gating the nanobody-tagged channel in vivo . Finally, we showed that delivering these new constructs by AAV to pancreatic beta cells in combination with the benchtop magnetic field delivery stimulates glucose-stimulated insulin release to improve glucose tolerance in mice in vivo . Together, the novel anti-ferritin nanobody, nanobody-TRPV1 construct and new hardware advance the utility of magnetogenetics in animals and potentially humans.

Population genetic structure is strongly affected by dispersal events, especially for migratory species. The investigation of population structure is therefore conducive to increasing our understanding of species dispersal. Spodoptera litura (Fabricius) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is an important tobacco pest in China causing serious damage to multiple crops. In this study, we explore its dispersal dynamics by clarifying the fine-scale population genetics using 545 S. litura samples collected from tobacco plantations at 24 locations (mainly in Baise, Hechi, and Hezhou, Southern China). We analyzed the genetic diversity, genetic structure, and gene flow of these populations using seven microsatellite loci. Our results revealed high genetic diversity and low population genetic structure among S. litura. The genetic distance was uncorrelated with geographical distance, indicating the complete randomness of dispersal among the local populations. Our results suggest that the movement scope of contemporary S. litura might be much higher than the local-level spatial scale, which will provide a theoretical basis for pest management.

We have previously demonstrated that scavenger receptor A (SRA) acts as an immunosuppressive regulator of dendritic cell (DC) function in activating antitumor T cells. Here we investigate the potential of inhibiting SRA activity to enhance DC-targeted chaperone vaccines including one that was recently evaluated in melanoma patients. We show that short hairpin RNA-mediated SRA silencing significantly enhances the immunogenicity of DCs that have captured chaperone vaccines designed to target melanoma (i.e., hsp110-gp100) and breast cancer (i.e., hsp110-HER/Neu-ICD). SRA downregulation results in heightened activation of antigen-specific T cells and increased CD8+ T cell-dependent tumor inhibition. Additionally, small interfering RNA (siRNA) complexed with the biodegradable, biocompatible chitosan as a carrier can efficiently reduce SRA expression on CD11c+ DCs in vitro and in vivo. Our proof-of-concept study shows that direct administration of the chitosan-siRNA complex to mice promotes chaperone vaccine-elicited cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) response, culminating in improved eradication of experimental melanoma metastases. Targeting SRA with this chitosan-siRNA regimen combined with the chaperone vaccine also leads to reprogramming of the tumor environment, indicated by elevation of the cytokine genes (i.e., ifng, il12) known to skew Th1-like cellular immunity and increased tumor infiltration by IFN-γ+CD8+ CTLs as well as IL-12+CD11c+ DCs. Given the promising antitumor activity and safety profile of chaperone vaccine in cancer patients, further optimization of the chitosan-siRNA formulation to potentially broaden the immunotherapeutic benefits of chaperone vaccine is warranted.

Gortyna guizhouensis Wu, Yang, and Han, 2022 (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae) is a newly discovered moth species that feeds on tobacco piths during the larval stage. In this study, we sequenced and analyzed the complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of G. guizhouensis larvae via next-generation sequencing. The mitogenome was 15,441 bp long with an overall A + T content of 79.1%, 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA genes (tRNAs), two ribosomal RNA subunit genes and one control region. The phylogenetic tree, based on the nucleic acid sequences of 13 shared PCGs of 20 Noctuidae species, revealed that G. guizhouensis is in a well-supported clade with Striacosta albicosta.

Iron (Fe) oxides can stabilize organic carbon (OC) through adsorption and co-precipitation, while microbial Fe reduction can disrupt Fe-bound OC (Fe-OC) and further increase OC mineralization. The net effects of OC preservation and mineralization mediated by Fe oxides are still unclear, especially for old carbon (formed from plant litters over millions of years) and crystalline Fe oxides. Accelerating the recovery of wetland carbon sinks is critical for mitigating climate change and achieving carbon neutrality. Quantifying the net effect of Fe-mediated OC mineralization and preservation is vital for understanding the role of crystalline Fe oxides in carbon cycling and promoting the recovery of soil carbon sinks. Here, we explored the OC balances mediated by hematite (Hem) and lignite addition (Lig) to freshwater wetland (FW, rich in C and Fe) and saline-alkaline wetland (SW, poor in C and Fe) soil slurries, incubated under anaerobic conditions. Results showed that Lig caused net OC accumulation (FW: 5.9 ± 3.6 mg g-1; SW: 8.3 ± 3.2 mg g-1), while Hem caused dramatic OC loss, particularly in the FW soils. Hem inhibited microbial Fe(III) reduction by decreasing the relative abundance of Fe respiration reducers, while substantially enhancing OC mineralization through the shift in the microbial community structure of FW soils. Lig resulted in carbon emission, but its contribution to preservation by the formation of Fe-OC was far higher than that which caused OC loss. We concluded that crystalline Fe oxide addition solely favored the increase of OC mineralization by adjusting the microbial community structure, while old carbon enriched with an aromatic and alkyl promoted Fe-OC formation and further increased OC persistence. Our findings could be employed for wetland restoration, particularly for the recovery of soil carbon sinks.

Infections induce a set of pleiotropic responses in animals, including anorexia, adipsia, lethargy and changes in temperature, collectively termed sickness behaviours1. Although these responses have been shown to be adaptive, the underlying neural mechanisms have not been elucidated2-4. Here we use of a set of unbiased methodologies to show that a specific subpopulation of neurons in the brainstem can control the diverse responses to a bacterial endotoxin (lipopolysaccharide (LPS)) that potently induces sickness behaviour. Whole-brain activity mapping revealed that subsets of neurons in the nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS) and the area postrema (AP) acutely express FOS after LPS treatment, and we found that subsequent reactivation of these specific neurons in FOS2A-iCreERT2 (also known as TRAP2) mice replicates the behavioural and thermal component of sickness. In addition, inhibition of LPS-activated neurons diminished all of the behavioural responses to LPS. Single-nucleus RNA sequencing of the NTS-AP was used to identify LPS-activated neural populations, and we found that activation of ADCYAP1+ neurons in the NTS-AP fully recapitulates the responses elicited by LPS. Furthermore, inhibition of these neurons significantly diminished the anorexia, adipsia and locomotor cessation seen after LPS injection. Together these studies map the pleiotropic effects of LPS to a neural population that is both necessary and sufficient for canonical elements of the sickness response, thus establishing a critical link between the brain and the response to infection.

Soybean protein pastes were preheated for different times (20, 25 and 30 min) with l-cysteine to improve the printability and self-gelation properties and to explore the relationship between the degree of denaturation and the feasibility of microwave 3D printing. As the pre-denaturation degree increased, ordered secondary structures in proteins gradually decreased, and tertiary structures unfolded. Soybean protein printability, moulding quality increased, and soybean protein, which is not suitable for printing in its natural state, achieved self-gelling after 3D printing. Soybean protein pastes preheated for 25 min with l-cysteine achieved a complete hollow sphere structure compared to other formulations, while pastes preheated for 30 min formed a coarser structure, and blockage occurred during printing. The covalent bond of ε- (γ-glutamine) formed by the synergistic effect of transglutaminase (TGase) and microwaves was the main force driving the gel network structure formation. The most suitable pre-denaturation degree of soybean protein was quantitatively characterized as 57 %.

The subfamily Typhlocybinae is a ubiquitous, highly diverse group of mostly tiny, delicate leafhoppers. The tribal classification has long been controversial and phylogenetic methods have only recently begun to test the phylogenetic status and relationships of tribes. To shed light on the evolution of Typhlocybinae, we performed phylogenetic analyses based on 28 newly sequenced and 19 previously sequenced mitochondrial genomes representing all currently recognized tribes. The results support the monophyly of the subfamily and its sister-group relationship to Mileewinae. The tribe Zyginellini is polyphyletic with some included genera derived independently within Typhlocybini. Ancestral character state reconstruction suggests that some morphological characters traditionally considered important for diagnosing tribes (presence/absence of ocelli, development of hind wing submarginal vein) are homoplastic. Divergence time estimates indicate that the subfamily arose during the Middle Cretaceous and that the extant tribes arose during the Late Cretaceous. Phylogenetic results support establishment of a new genus, Subtilissimia Yan & Yang gen. nov., with two new species, Subtilissimia fulva Yan & Yang sp. nov. and Subtilissimia pellicula Yan & Yang sp. nov.; but indicate that two previously recognized species of Farynala distinguished only by the direction of curvature of the processes of the aedeagus are synonyms, that is, Farynala dextra Yan & Yang, 2017 equals Farynala sinistra Yan & Yang, 2017 syn. nov. A key to tribes of Typhlocybinae is provided.

INTRODUCTION: Autoimmune gastritis causing both subacute combined degeneration of the spinal cord and pernicious anemia is rare in clinical practice. Here, we report a case of subacute combined degeneration of the spinal cord and pernicious anemia resulting from vitamin B12 deficiency due to autoimmune gastritis. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 66-year-old woman presented with a 2-month history of numbness in her extremities. DIAGNOSES: The diagnoses were (1) autoimmune gastritis (2) subacute combined degeneration of the spinal cord (3) pernicious anemia (4) hypergastrinemia (5) chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis. INTERVENTIONS: The patient received intramuscular methylcobalamin treatment for 5 days, followed by oral methylcobalamin daily.Outcomes: Symptoms improved, and anemia recovered in the second month after discharge. She discontinued her medication afterward, and the neurological symptoms recurred. CONCLUSIONS: Autoimmune gastritis can lead to several diseases if not intervened in the early course. Neuropathy and hematopathy recur with treatment discontinuity. Methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin are unlikely to be more effective than vitamin B12.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the breast cancer susceptibility gene 1 (BRCA1) regulates oxidative damage in oral cancer cells by interacting with nuclear factor erythroid 2-like 2 (NRF2). DESIGN: The BRCA1 gene was silenced in CAL-27 and DOK cells using specific shRNA, and NRF2 was activated with sulforaphane. The expression levels of BRCA1, NRF2 and its target genes were assessed by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction and western blotting. Cell counting kit-8 assay was used to detect cell proliferation, apoptosis was detected by flow cytometry, and 8-OXo-2'-deoxyguanosine level was measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The expression of BRCA1 and NRF2 in patients with oral leukoplakia and oral squamous cell carcinoma were evaluated by immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: BRCA1 knockdown downregulated NRF2 and its target genes, increased proliferation rates, reduced apoptosis, and increased 8-OXo-2'-deoxyguanosine levels compared to the control. Activation of NRF2 by sulforaphane significantly upregulated NRF2 levels in the BRCA1-depleted cells, and restored proliferation, apoptosis and 8-OXo-2'-deoxyguanosine level in a dose-dependent manner. Compared with patients with leukoplakia, BRCA1 and NRF2 expression were increased in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma. CONCLUSIONS: BRCA1 depletion increases oxidative damage and promotes the malignant phenotype, which may eventually promote oral carcinogenesis. The NRF2-activator sulforaphane is a potential chemo-preventive agent for oral cancer.

Quantum metrology enables some of the most precise measurements. In the life sciences, diamond-based quantum sensing has led to a new class of biophysical sensors and diagnostic devices that are being investigated as a platform for cancer screening and ultrasensitive immunoassays. However, a broader application in the life sciences based on nanoscale NMR spectroscopy has been hampered by the need to interface highly sensitive quantum bit (qubit) sensors with their biological targets. Here, we demonstrate an approach that combines quantum engineering with single-molecule biophysics to immobilize individual proteins and DNA molecules on the surface of a bulk diamond crystal that hosts coherent nitrogen vacancy qubit sensors. Our thin (sub-5 nm) functionalization architecture provides precise control over the biomolecule adsorption density and results in near-surface qubit coherence approaching 100 µs. The developed architecture remains chemically stable under physiological conditions for over 5 d, making our technique compatible with most biophysical and biomedical applications.

OBJECTIVES: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) monotherapy was standard of care in second-line treatment of patients with advance non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). This study aims to investigate the efficacy of ICI plus chemotherapy in patients with previously treated advanced NSCLC. PATIENTS AND METHODS: An investigator-initiated trial (IIT) aiming to evaluate the efficacy and safety of ICI in combination with chemotherapy as second line and beyond for patients with advanced NSCLC was undergone at Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital (ChiCTR1900026203). Patients who received ICI monotherapy as second or later line setting during the same period were also collected as a comparator. RESULTS: From April 2018 to June 2019, 31 patients were included into this IIT study, simultaneously 51 patients treated with ICI monotherapy were selected as a comparator. ICI plus chemotherapy showed a significantly higher ORR (35.5% vs. 15.7%, p=0.039), prolonged PFS (median: 5.6 vs. 2.5 months, p = 0.013) and OS (median: NE vs. 12.6 months, p = 0.038) compared with ICI alone. In the subgroup of negative PD-L1 expression (9 patients in combination group and 12 patients in monotherapy group), ICI plus chemotherapy also had a favorable ORR (44.4% vs. 8.3%, p = 0.119), longer PFS (median: 6.5 vs 3.0 months, p < 0.05) and OS (median: NE vs. 8.2 months, p = 0.117). Meanwhile, the addition of chemotherapy did not increase immune-related adverse events. CONCLUSIONS: ICI plus chemotherapy showed superior ORR, PFS and OS than ICI alone patients with previous treated advanced NSCLC. These findings warrant further investigation.

Habrobracon hebetor (Say) is an important biological control agent for lepidopteran pests of stored products. In this study, the age-specific functional response, paralysis rate, and parasitism rate of H. hebetor under different host deprivation treatments (PC: without host deprivation, used as the control, P1d: host deprivation, but the host was removed after 1 d contact, and PW: host deprivation from beginning) were evaluated at different larval densities (5, 10, 20, 40, and 80) of the Ephestia elutella (Hübner) at 28 ± 1°C, 75 ± 5% RH and 16:8 h L:D. Ages of parasitoid females used were 2, 5, 10, and 20 d old. The logistic regression results indicated that the functional response of H. hebetor females under different host deprivation treatments was type II. The longest handling time was observed in 20-d old females, while the shortest handling time and highest maximum attack rate (T/Th) were estimated at the age of 2 d in all treatments. The paralysis and parasitism rates of H. hebetor were the highest at 2, 5, and 10-d old in all treatments. The results of this study suggest that H. hebetor females up to 10-d old can be used as an efficient biological control agent against E. elutella. The data of this study can also be used to predict the efficacy of different aged H. hebetor females in controlling E. elutella populations.

PURPOSE: High-grade patterns (micropapillary/solid/complex gland) are associated with a higher recurrence rate and shorter disease-free survival. Thus far, it remains unclear whether the efficacy of first-line anticancer therapy is different from that of the other adenocarcinoma subgroups for patients with high-grade patterns. The study aimed to investigate the association between an adenocarcinoma with high-grade patterns with the outcomes of first-line treatment in patients with lung cancer. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients with a high-grade pattern adenocarcinoma (more than 20% of micropapillary/solid components/complex glandular patterns) were retrospectively analyzed between June 2015 and June 2017. Patients' clinical characteristics and treatment outcomes were compared with those of the remaining control adenocarcinoma subgroups. RESULTS: In total, 239 patients with adenocarcinoma, including 115 (48.1%) high-grade patterns and 124 (51.9%) control groups, were enrolled. Patients' clinical characteristics such as age, sex, smoking status, and stage were similar between the two groups. Among them, 108 patients received first-line chemotherapy, and 131 received epidermal growth factor receptor-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (EGFR-TKIs). In the chemotherapy group, adenocarcinoma of high-grade patterns had a significantly lower objective response rate (ORR; 15.6% vs 36.4%, P=0.045), shorter progression-free survival (PFS; median 4.1 vs 5.4 months, P=0.007) and overall survival (OS, median 19.6 vs 23.8 months, P=0.048) compared with the control group. As for these treated with EGFR-TKIs, a similar ORR (70.7% vs 72.1%, P=0.703), PFS (median 11.3 vs 13.9 months, P=0.065) and OS (median 34.1 vs 29.6%, p=0.575) were observed between these two groups. CONCLUSION: An adenocarcinoma with high-grade patterns is associated with inferior outcomes to first-line chemotherapy in relapsed lung cancer. Patients who received chemotherapy had a significantly shorter PFS and OS and lower ORR than control subjects, while there was no difference in the EGFR-TKI cohort. This study is the first to report the distribution of adenocarcinoma with high-grade patterns.

PURPOSE: This study was performed to evaluate a modified method of reconstructing the thumb abduction function in children undergoing surgical treatment of thumb duplication. METHODS: This retrospective study included 33 children (38 thumbs) with Wassel type III to VII thumb duplication who underwent excision of the polydactylism and osteotomy of the preserved thumb. Among them, 16 children (19 thumbs) underwent reconstruction of the attachment of the articular capsule and collateral ligament of the metacarpophalangeal joint, abductor pollicis brevis and flexor pollicis brevis by the anchor technique (Group A), while 17 children (19 thumbs) underwent suturing the attachment of the above-mentioned soft tissues to the periosteum (Group B). All children were followed up for six years after surgery. The appearance, function and joint stability of the preserved thumb were compared between the two groups; the bone alignment and development were observed. RESULTS: The deformity rate of preserved thumbs and the positive rate of lateral stress test were significantly lower in Group A than B (p < 0.05). The modified Tada score and the distance of first web were significantly higher in Group A than B (p < 0.05). Flexion, extension, adduction, abduction and palmar movement of the thumbs were good; bone alignment and development were good and no osteophyte or anchor shadow was left in the preserved thumbs in Group A. CONCLUSION: Reconstruction of the abduction function using the anchor technique is effective in children undergoing surgical treatment for Wassel type III to VII thumb duplication and it may be superior to the conventional technique. The moth Ephestia elutella (Hübner), is a storage pest that feeds on tobacco, cacao beans, cereals, dried fruits, and nuts. We generated a chromosome-level genome assembly containing 576.94 Mb using Nanopore long reads (approximately 130×) and Hi-C data (approximately 134×). The final assembly contained 804 scaffolds, with an N50 length of 19.00 Mb, and 94.96% (547.89 Mb) of the assembly was anchored into 31 pseudochromosomes. We masked 58.12% (335.32 Mb) of the genome as repetitive elements, identified 727 noncoding RNAs, and predicted 15,637 protein-coding genes. Gene family evolution and functional enrichment analyses revealed significantly expanded gene families primarily involved in digestion, detoxification, and chemosensation. Strong chromosomal syntenic relationships were also observed among E. elutella, silkworm, and tobacco cutworm. This study could provide a valuable genomic basis for better understanding the biology of E. elutella.

Host plant preference during the larval stage may help shape not only phenotypic plasticity but also behavioral isolation. We assessed the effects of diet on population parameters and mate choice in Spodoptera litura. We raised larvae fed on tobacco, Chinese cabbage, or an artificial diet, and we observed the shortest developmental time and highest fecundity in individuals fed the artificial diet. However, survival rates were higher for larvae on either of the natural diets. Population parameters including intrinsic rate of increase and finite rate of increase were significantly higher with the artificial diet, but this diet led to a lower mean generation time. Copulation duration, copulation time, and number of eggs reared significantly differed between diets. In terms of mate choice, females on the artificial diet rarely mated with males fed on a natural host. Our results support the hypothesis that different diets may promote behavioral isolation, affecting mating outcomes. Thus, findings for populations fed an artificial diet may not reflect findings for populations in the field.
