RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To discuss the value of computed tomography (CT) iterative reconstruction technique combined with target scanning in the diagnosis of solid pseudopapillary tumor of the pancreas (SPTP). METHODS: The clinical information and CT examination data of 27 patients with SPTP were retrospectively analyzed, and the general condition and CT performance of the patients were observed. The CT image reconstruction algorithm of all patients used iterative reconstruction technique combined with the application of target scanning technique. RESULTS: A total of 27 patients were included in this study, including 6 males and 21 females, aged 14-72 years with a mean age of 39.6 ± 13.6 years. SPTP was more common in young and middle-aged females, with a low level of tumor markers, dominated by cystic-solid tumors. The combination of CT iterative reconstruction technology and targeted scanning revealed the following: the capsule of SPTP was clear and complete, where calcifications were visible, solid components were progressively enhanced, and rare pancreatic and bile duct dilation was seen. Tumors were cystic-solid in 18 of 27 patients with SPTP, of which the solid components showed isodensity or slightly low-density, with calcifications. The solid components and cyst walls were mildly enhanced during the arterial phase, and were progressively enhanced during the parenchymal phase, portal vein phase, and delayed phase, with their enhancement degree lower than that of normal pancreatic parenchyma, and pancreatic and bile duct dilation was rare. There were no statistical differences in tumor location, morphology, growth pattern, integrity of capsule, cystic or solid, calcifications, and enhancement features between the male group and the female group (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: The iterative reconstruction combined with target scanning clearly displayed the CT features of tumors, helping the diagnosis and clinical treatment of the disease.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To explore the role of circadian clock gene NR1D1 (REV-erbα) in bladder cancer (BC). METHODS: Firstly, the association of NR1D1 level with clinical characteristics and prognosis was investigated among patients diagnosed with BC. Secondly, CCK-8, transwell, and colony formation experiments were performed among BC cells treated with Rev-erbα agonist (SR9009), as well as lentivirus and siRNA, for which NR1D1 were overexpressed (OE) and knocked down (KD), respectively. Thirdly, cell cycle and apoptosis were tested by flowcytometry. PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway proteins were determined in OE-NR1D1 cells. Finally, OE-NR1D1 and OE-Control BC cells were subcutaneously implanted in BALB/c nude mice. The tumor size and protein levels were compared between groups. A P < 0.05 was considered as statistically significant. RESULTS: Patients with NR1D1 positive status had a longer disease-free survival than those with negative expression. The cell viability, migration, and colony formation of BC cells after treated with SR9009 were significantly suppressed. OE-NR1D1 cells had obviously inhibited cell viability, migration, and colony formation, while those were found strengthened in KD-NR1D1 cells. Besides, KD-NR1D1 cells were observed with a lower proportion of dead cells and G0/G1 cells, but a higher ratio of G2/M. The changes of p-AKT, p-S6, p-4EBP1, and FASN involved in PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway were detected in OE- and KD-NR1D1 BC cells. Finally, in vivo data demonstrated that overexpression of NR1D1 suppressed the tumorigenicity of BC cells. CONCLUSION: NR1D1 played a role of tumor suppressor and it might become a novel target for the treatment of BC.

RESUMO

The young shoots of the tea plant Baiye No. 1 display an albino phenotype in the early spring under low environmental temperatures, and the leaves re-green like those of common tea cultivars during the warm season. Periodic albinism is precisely regulated by a complex gene network that leads to metabolic differences and enhances the nutritional value of tea leaves. Here, we identified messenger RNAs (mRNAs), long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs), circular RNAs (circRNAs), and microRNAs (miRNAs) to construct competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) regulatory networks. We performed whole-transcriptome sequencing of 12 samples from four periods (Bud, leaves not expanded; Alb, albino leaves; Med, re-greening leaves; and Gre, green leaves) and identified a total of 6325 differentially expressed mRNAs (DEmRNAs), 667 differentially expressed miRNAs (DEmiRNAs), 1702 differentially expressed lncRNAs (DElncRNAs), and 122 differentially expressed circRNAs (DEcircRNAs). Furthermore, we constructed ceRNA networks on the basis of co-differential expression analyses which comprised 112, 35, 38, and 15 DEmRNAs, DEmiRNAs, DElncRNAs, and DEcircRNAs, respectively. Based on the regulatory networks, we identified important genes and their interactions with lncRNAs, circRNAs, and miRNAs during periodic albinism, including the ceRNA regulatory network centered on miR5021x, the GAMYB-miR159-lncRNA regulatory network, and the NAC035-miR319x-circRNA regulatory network. These regulatory networks might be involved in the response to cold stress, photosynthesis, chlorophyll synthesis, amino acid synthesis, and flavonoid accumulation. Our findings provide novel insights into ceRNA regulatory mechanisms involved in Baiye No. 1 during periodic albinism and will aid future studies of the molecular mechanisms underlying albinism mutants.

RESUMO

Wickerhamomyces anomalus (W. anomalus) is widely reported in the brewing industry and has positive effects on the aromatic profiles of wines because of its unique physiological characteristics and metabolic features. However, the accumulation of ethanol during fermentation inhibits the growth of W. anomalus. Thiamine is involved in the response against various abiotic stresses in microorganisms. Therefore, we used transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses to study the effect of thiamine on ethanol-stressed W. anomalus. The results indicate that thiamine could alleviate the inhibitory effect of ethanol stress on the survival of W. anomalus. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and differentially expressed metabolites (DEMs) caused by the thiamine intervention were identified as oxidative phosphorylation through integrated transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses. In addition, ethanol treatment decreased the content of intracellular adenosine triphosphate (ATP), while thiamine partially alleviated this phenomenon. The present comprehensive transcriptional overview and metabolomic analysis provide insights about the mechanisms of thiamine protection on W. anomalus under ethanol stress and promote the potential applications of W. anomalus in the fermentation industry.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To compare the efficacy and long-term survival of laparoscopic radical nephrectomy (LRN) with laparoscopic partial nephrectomy (LPN) in the treatment of patients with early renal cell carcinoma (RCC). METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on the medical records of 146 patients, aged 40-60 years, with T1bN0M0 RCC admitted to Chongqing Three Gorges Central Hospital. The patients were divided into a study group (n=62) treated with LPN and a control group (n=84) treated with LRN according to surgical methods. The renal function, one month after operation and surgery-related indicators and the incidence of postoperative complications were analyzed. RESULTS: One month after operation GFR was significantly higher in the study group than in the control group (p<0.05), which was lower than that before operation in the two groups (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: The short- and long-term efficacy of LPN is similar to that of LRN in the treatment of T1bN0M0 RCC, but LPN better preserves the renal function, which has a potential value in reducing cardiovascular events.

RESUMO

This study aimed to investigate the efficacy and safety of drug-eluting beads (DEB) transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) treatment in Chinese intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) patients.37 ICC patients underwent DEB-TACE treatment in CTILC study (registered on clinicaltrials.gov with registry No. NCT03317483) were included in this present study. Treatment response was assessed according to modified Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (mRECIST). Overall survival (OS) was calculated from the time of DEB-TACE operation until the date of death from any causes. Liver function change and adverse events (AEs) were recorded during and after DEB-TACE operation.3 (8.1%) patients achieved complete response (CR) and 22 (59.5%) patients achieved partial response (PR), with objective response rate (ORR) of 67.6%. After DEB-TACE treatment, mean OS was 376 days (95%CI: 341-412 days). Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that Bilobar disease (P = .040, OR: 0.105, 95% CI: 0.012-0.898) and portal vein invasion (P = .038, OR: 0.104, 95% CI: 0.012-0.881) could independently predict less possibility of ORR. Patients with ALB abnormal, TP abnormal, ALT abnormal and AST abnormal were increased at 1-week post DEB-TACE treatment (P = .034, P = .001, P < .001, P = .006, respectively), while returned to the levels at baseline after 1 to 3 months (all P > .050). Besides, most of the AEs were mild including pain, fever, vomiting, and nausea in this study.DEB-TACE was effective and well tolerated in treating ICC patients, and bilobar disease as well as portal vein invasion were independently correlated with less probability of ORR achievement.

RESUMO

Due to the ability to induce the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) under light irradiation, ZnO nanoparticles show great potential in photodynamic therapy (PDT). Photo-triggered ROS production by ZnO nanoparticles and the resulting phototoxicity are efficient in killing cancer cells. This review highlights the recent exciting progress on the nanoscale ZnO-based photosensitizers (PSs) for PDT. Both the semplice ZnO nanoparticles as the PSs and the various chemicals (organic PS, dopant, metal and chemotherapeutic drugs) modified ZnO nanoparticles as the PSs show good ROS generation efficiency. The productive rate of ROS, the wavelength of exciting lights, and the therapeutic effect can be altered by doping different chemicals into ZnO nanoparticles at will. Additionally, we give some outlook on the design and functionalization of next-generation ZnO nanoparticles for more effective anti-cancer applications.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy and safety of drug-eluting beads transarterial chemoembolization (DEB-TACE) treatment in Chinese hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients and the prognostic factors for treatment response as well as survival. A total of 275 HCC patients were included in this prospective study. Treatment response was assessed by modified Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (mRECIST), and progression-free survival (PFS) as well as overall survival (OS) were determined. Liver function and adverse events (AEs) were assessed before and after DEB-TACE operation. Complete response (CR), partial response (PR), and objective response rate (ORR) were 22.9%, 60.7%, and 83.6%, respectively. The mean PFS was 362 (95% CI: 34.9-375) days, the 6-month PFS rate was 89.4 ± 2.1%, while the mean OS was 380 (95% CI: 370-389) days, and the 6-month OS rate was 94.4 ± 1.7%. Multivariate logistic regression revealed that portal vein invasion (p = 0.011) was an independent predictor of worse clinical response. Portal vein invasion (p = 0.040), previous cTACE treatment (p = 0.030), as well as abnormal serum creatinine level (BCr) (p = 0.017) were independent factors that predicted worse ORR. In terms of survival, higher Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) stage (p = 0.029) predicted for worse PFS, and abnormal albumin (ALB) (p = 0.011) and total serum bilirubin (TBIL) (p = 0.009) predicted for worse OS. The number of patients with abnormal albumin, total protein (TP), TBIL, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) were augmented at 1 week posttreatment and were similar at 1-3 months compared with baseline. The most common AEs were pain, fever, nausea, and vomiting, and no severe AEs were observed in this study. DEB-TACE was effective and tolerable in treating Chinese HCC patients, and portal vein invasion, previous cTACE treatment, abnormal BCr, ALB, and TBIL appear to be important factors that predict worse clinical outcome.

RESUMO

This study aimed to investigate the efficacy, safety, and prognostic factors of drug-eluting beads transarterial chemoembolization (DEB-TACE) in treating Chinese patients with liver cancer. A total of 367 liver cancer patients from 24 medical centers were consecutively enrolled in this multiple-center, prospective cohort study, including 275 hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cases, 37 intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) cases, and 55 secondary liver cancer cases. All the patients received CalliSpheres® DEB-TACE treatment. Treatment response, overall survival (OS), change of liver function, and adverse events (AEs) were assessed. DEB-TACE treatment achieved 19.9% complete response (CR) and 79.6% objective response rate (ORR), with mean OS of 384 days [95% confidence interval (CI): 375-393 days]. CR and ORR were both higher in HCC patients compared with primary ICC patients and secondary liver cancer patients, while no difference was discovered in OS. Portal vein invasion was an independent risk factor for CR, while portal vein invasion, previous conventional TACE (cTACE) treatment, and abnormal blood creatinine (BCr) were independent risk factors for ORR. In addition, largest nodule size ≥5.0 cm, abnormal albumin (ALB), and abnormal total bilirubin (TBIL) independently correlated with unfavorable OS. Most liver function indexes were recovered to baseline levels at 1-3 months after DEB-TACE. Common AEs were pain, fever, vomiting, and nausea; most of them were at mild grade. CalliSpheres® DEB-TACE is efficient and well tolerated in Chinese liver cancer patients. Portal vein invasion, previous cTACE treatment, largest nodule size, abnormal BCr, ALB, and TBIL correlate with worse prognosis independently.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to assess the treatment response, short-term overall survival (OS) and safety profiles of drug-eluting beads transarterial chemoembolization (DEB-TACE) in patients with secondary liver cancer. METHODS: Fifty-five patients with secondary liver cancer underwent DEB-TACE were enrolled in this prospective cohort study. Treatment response was assessed by modified Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (mRECIST). OS was calculated from the time of DEB-TACE operation until the date of death. RESULTS: The complete response (CR) and objective response rate (ORR) at 1-3 months post DEB-TACE were 12.7% and 67.3%. Mean OS was 383 d (95% CI: 360-406), and 6-month OS rate was 93.4%±3.7%. Subgroup analysis revealed previous conventional TACE (cTACE) treatment was correlated with worse ORR (P=0.028), and it was a risk factor for ORR achievement (P=0.021). As for liver function, the percentages of abnormal TP (P=0.031), TBIL (P=0.022), ALT (P=0.002) and AST (P=0.035) were increased at 1 week post DEB-TACE compared to baseline, while these four indexes returned to baseline (all P>0.05) at 1-3 months post DEB-TACE. As to safety profiles, 41 (66.1%), 28 (45.2%), 17 (27.4%), 8 (12.9%) and 6 (9.7%) cases had pain, vomiting, fever, nausea and other adverse events (AEs) respectively during DEB-TACE operation, while 26 (41.9%), 9 (14.5%), 8 (12.9%), 4 (6.5%), 1 (1.6%) and 2 (3.2%) cases had pain, fever, vomiting, nausea, bone marrow toxicity and other AEs respectively at 1 month after DEB-TACE operation. CONCLUSIONS: DEB-TACE was efficient and well tolerated in treating patients with secondary liver cancer.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND The aims of this study were to investigate the expression of methylenetetrahydrofolate dehydrogenase 1 (MTHFD1) in human tissue containing clear cell renal cell carcinoma (CCRCC) compared with normal renal tissue, and the effects of upregulating the expression of MTHFD1 in the human CCRCC cell line, Caki-1. MATERIAL AND METHODS Tumor and adjacent normal renal tissue were obtained from 44 patients who underwent radical nephrectomy for CCRCC. Caki-1 human CCRCC cells were divided into the control group, the empty vector (EV) group, and the plasmid-treated group that overexpressed MTHFD1. MTHFD1 mRNA and protein levels were measured by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and Western blot, respectively. The cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) assay measured cell viability. Flow cytometry evaluated apoptosis and the cell cycle. Western blot measured the protein levels of MTHFD1, Bax, Bcl-2, Akt, p53, and cyclin D1, and qRT-PCR determined the gene expression profiles. RESULTS MTHFD1 mRNA and protein levels in CCRCC tumor tissues were significantly lower compared with adjacent normal renal tissue. MTHFD1 over-expression in Caki-1 cells inhibited cell proliferation, arrested cells in the G1 phase, increased cell apoptosis, and upregulated gene and protein expression of Bax/Bcl-2 and p53 and inhibited p-Akt, and cyclin D1. CONCLUSIONS MTHFD1 was underexpressed in CCRCC tissue when compared with normal renal tissue. MTHFD1 transfection of human CCRCC Caki-1 cells in vitro inhibited cell proliferation and promoted apoptosis, associated with reduced expression of cyclin D1, reduced Akt phosphorylation, and increased expression of Bax/Bcl-2 and p53.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: STAT3 is an important protein in Janus kinase (JAK)-signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT) signaling pathway that facilitates B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2) expression. MiR-17 was found to be significantly reduced in prostate cancer tissues and cells, suggesting that it might be a tumor suppressor in prostate cancer tumorigenesis. Bioinformatics analysis showed the complementary binding site between miR-17 and STAT3. This study aimed to investigate the role of miR-17 in regulating JAK-STAT signaling pathway, as well as prostate cancer cell proliferation and apoptosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Dual luciferase assay was used to verify the targeted relationship between miR-155 and STAT3. LNCaP cells were cultured in vitro and divided into four groups, including mimic NC, miR-17 mimic, si-NC, and si-STAT3 groups. STAT3, p-STAT3, and Bcl-2 expressions were tested by western blot. Cell apoptosis was detected by flow cytometry. Cell proliferation was assessed by EdU staining. RESULTS: MiR-17 mimic transfection significantly reduced the relative luciferase activity in HEK293T cells. MiR-17 targeted regulated STAT3 expression. MiR-17 expression and cell apoptosis were obviously declined, while STAT3 level and cell proliferation markedly were elevated in LNCaP cells compared with RWPE-1 cells. MiR-17 mimic and/or si-STAT3 transfection significantly downregulated the expression of STAT3, p-STAT3, and Bcl-2, attenuated cell proliferation, and enhanced cell apoptosis in LNCaP cells. CONCLUSIONS: Upregulation of miR-17 inhibited LNCaP cell proliferation and induced cell apoptosis by downregulating the expression of STAT3, p-STAT3, and Bcl-2.

RESUMO

Betalains replace anthocyanins as color pigments in most families of Caryophyllales. Unlike anthocyanins, betalains are derived from tyrosine via three enzymatic steps: hydroxylation of L-tyrosine to L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA; step 1), and conversion of L-DOPA to betalamic acid (step 2), and to cyclo-DOPA (cDOPA; step 3). The principal enzymes responsible for these reactions have been elucidated at the molecular level, but their subcellular localizations have not been explored; hence, the intracellular compartments wherein betalains are biosynthesized remain unknown. Here, we report on the subcellular localization of these principal enzymes. Bioinformatic predictors and N- and C-terminal GFP tagging in transgenic tobacco, showed that Beta vulgaris CYP76AD1 which mediates both steps 1 and 3, DODA1 that catalyzes step 2, and CYP76AD6 which also mediates step 1, were similarly localized to the cytoplasm and nucleus (although the P450s were also weakly present in the endoplasmic reticulum). These two compartments were also the principal locations of Mirabilis jalapa cDOPA5GT. The cytoplasmic and nuclear co-localization of these key enzymes in tobacco suggests that betalains are biosynthesized in the cytoplasm and/or nucleus of betalain-containing plant cells. Elucidation of the subcellular compartmentation of betalain biosynthesis will facilitate the bioengineering of the betalain biosynthetic pathway in non-betalain-containing plants.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study was conducted to explore the diagnostic value of microRNA-143 (miRNA-143) in predicting in-stent restenosis (ISR) of lower extremity arterial occlusive disease (LEAOD). METHODS: From February 2012 to March 2015, 165 patients (112 males and 53 females) with LEAOD undergoing interventional treatment were enrolled in this study. Serum miRNA-143 expression was detected using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). Patients were assigned into the restenosis and non-restenosis groups according to routine surveillance postoperative angiography. A logistic regression analysis was conducted to analyze the risk factors for ISR in LEAOD patients. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was drawn to evaluate the diagnostic value of miRNA-143 in predicting ISR for LEAOD patients. RESULTS: There were 74 and 91 patients in the restenosis and non-restenosis groups, respectively. Before the treatment, there were significant differences in history of diabetes, smoking status, blood sugar level (BSL) at admission, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) level, and stent diameter between the restenosis and non-restenosis groups (all P < 0.05). Serum miRNA-143 expression was lower in the restenosis group than in the non-restenosis group (P < 0.05). Serum miRNA-143 expression in the restenosis group was correlated with smoking status, history of diabetes, BSL, and LDL-C (all P < 0.05). Logistic regression analysis demonstrated that miRNA-143, LDL-C, and smoking status were correlated with the postoperative ISR (all P < 0.05). ROC curve analysis revealed that the area under the curve (AUC) of miRNA-143 in predicting ISR for LEAOD patients was 0.866. CONCLUSION: Our results indicate that miRNA-143 can be a promising tool for predicting the ISR in LEAOD patients.

OBJECTIVE: To explore CT and MRI manifestations of the axial area peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumors (pPNETs) in order to improve the knowledge of this disease. METHODS: The clinical data of 10 patients with pPNETs underwent pathologically confirmed were retrospectively analyzed from October 2008 to May 2014. There were 7 males and 3 females, aged from 8 to 49 years old with median of 23.6 years. The preoperative multi-slice spiral CT scan was completed in 3 cases, plain CT scan and enhancement in 4 cases; MRI and enhancement scanning in 5 cases; and among them, 2 cases underwent both MRI and CT scan. RESULTS: In-bone type was found 6 cases and out-bone type was found 4 cases. Three cases occurred in sacral vertebrae, 2 cases in lumbar vertebrae, 1 case in cervical vertebrae, 1 case in cervical spinal canal, 1 case in coccyx, 1 case in the right iliac bone, 1 case in presacral space. Cross sectional the smallest tumor maximum level was 1.1 cmx 1.2 cm in size, the biggest tumor was 8.0 cm x 9.2 cm, the median size was 4.4 cm x 5.7 cm, of them, the tumor of maximal diameter larger than 5 cm had 6 cases. Except 2 cases-without destruction of bone, the other 5 cases with osteolytic destruction, 2 cases with calcification, 1 case with mixed. Equidensite was main in CT scan, 1 case with uniform density, other 6 cases with uneven density,in which 3 cases with "floating ice" change; 1 case with moderate strengthening, other 3 cases with obviously strengthening, 2 cases with multiple small blood vessels in enhancement scanning. MRI of 5 cases showed the signal of isointensity on T1WI, the slightly high signal on T2WI and the signal was not uniform; after enhancement scan, the signal of 5 cases obviously enhanced. Two patients complicated with vertebral compression fractures, no periosteal reaction was found in all patients, and no the destruction of intervertebral disk was found in 5 patients of MRI scan. CONCLUSION: The axial area pPNETs is common among children and the youth, and the mass often is huge. The mass of in-bone type often envelopes the vertebral body, and main located on prevertebral space, all associated with bone destruction, osteolytic destruction is common, and primary vertebral bodies also is common, attachment primary or involvement is few found, it can involve the spinal canal and anterior wall of spinal canal is common, some cases complicate with multiple newly born small vessels. The mass of out-hone type in deep soft tissue is common, minority primary spinal canal, many complicated with vertebral bone destruction, osteolytic destruction was main. The intervertebral disk was not invaded and intervertebral space has not stenosis. CT scan offer complicate with "floating ice" sign, and in-bone type is common. Isointensity is main on MRI TlWI and slightly longer signal is main on MRI T2WI, strengthening signal is obvious.

RESUMO

A 1670 bp 5'-flanking region of the polyphenol oxidase (PPO) gene was isolated from red Swiss chard, a betalain-producing plant. This region, named promoter BvcPPOP, and its 5'-truncated versions were fused with the GUS gene and introduced into Arabidopsis, an anthocyanins-producing plant. GUS histochemical staining and quantitative analysis of transgenic plants at the vegetative and reproductive stages showed that BvcPPOP could direct GUS gene expression in vegetative organs with root- and petiole-preference, but not in reproductive organs including inflorescences shoot, inflorescences leaf, flower, pod and seed. This promoter was regulated by developmental stages in its driving strength, but not in expression pattern. It was also regulated by the abiotic stressors tested, positively by salicylic acid (SA) and methyl jasmonate (MeJA) but negatively by abscisic acid (ABA), gibberellin (GA), NaCl and OH(-). Its four 5'-truncated versions varied in the driving strength, but not obviously in expression pattern, and even the shortest version (-225 to +22) retained the root- and petiole- preference. This promoter is, to our knowledge, the first PPO promoter cloned and functionally elucidated from the betalain-producing plant, and thus provides not only a useful tool for expressing gene(s) of agricultural interest in vegetative organs, but also a clue to clarify the function of metabolism-specific PPO in betalain biosynthesis.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the indication, approaches and prevention of complications in treatment of female stress urinary incontinence (SUI) with tension-free vaginal tape (TVT). METHODS: From September 2003 to December 2004, 40 cases of female stress urinary incontinence were treated, including 8 cases in association with cystocele or rectocele and 1 case in association with uterine prolapse. They ranged from 30 to 70 years in age with an average of 56.3 years. The disease course was 1-42 years (7.2 years on average). All patients received TVT. In the patients suffering from uterine prolapse and cystocele or rectocele, butterfly-shaped mesh patch was applied. RESULTS: All patients achieved satisfactory results. The complications included slight dysuria (2 cases), vesical perforation (1 case) and pelvic hematoma (1 case) and cleared up after treating. All cases were followed up 1 to 15 months and the results were satisfactory. No urinary incontinence and no dysuria reoccurred. CONCLUSION: TVT is effective for SUI.
