OBJECTIVE: To explore high density lipoprotein (HDL)/low density lipoprotein (LDL) and total typeⅠcollagen amino terminal extender peptide (t-PINP)/ C-terminal peptide of typeⅠcollagen ß special sequence(ß-CTX)and risk of osteoporosis vertebral fractures (OPVFs) in elderly women. METHODS: The clinical data of 446 female OPVFs patients aged above 60 years old from January 2019 to December 2020 were retrospectively analyzed. According to whether or not fracture, patients were divided into non-fracture group (186 patients) and fracture group(260 patients). Univariate analysis was performed to analysis age, body mass index(BMI), N-terminal mioldle molecular fragment of osteocalcin, N-MID OC), t-PINP, ß-CTX, 25-hydroxyvitamin D[25-(OH) VitD], blood sugar (Glu), total cholesterol(TC), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), Ca, P, Mg, urea (UREA), creatinine (Cr) and Cystatin C(CysC), and correlation between OPVFs and the above indexes and lipid, bone metabolism indexes between two groups;Logistic regression was performed to analyze risk factors and stratification relationship between vertebral fracture and HDL/LDL, t-PINP/ß-CTX. Logistic regression was used to analyze risk factors and stratification relationship between OPVFs and HDL/LDL, t-PINP/ß-CTX. RESULTS: There were no significant difference in age and BMI between non-fracture group and fracture group (P>0.05). Compared with non-fracture group, contents of HDL, t-PINP/ß-CTX and HDL/LDL in fracture group were decreased, and contents of ß-CTX were increased (P<0.05). OPVFs was positively correlated with ß-CTX (r=0.110, P<0.05), and negatively correlated with HDL, HDL/LDL and t-PINP/ß-CTX (r=-0.157, -0.175, -0.181, P<0.05). HDL and HDL/LDL were negatively correlated with ß-CTX (r=-0.22, -0.12, P<0.05) and t-PINP (r=-0.13, -0.10, P<0.05). 25-(OH) VitD was positively correlated with TC and HDL (r=0.11, 0.18, P<0.05). HDL/LDL was positively correlated with t-PINP/ß-CTX(r=0.11, P=0.02). t-PINP/ß-CTX[OR=0.998, 95%CI(0.997, 1.000), P<0.05], HDL/LDL[OR=0.228, 95%CI(0.104, 0.499), P<0.01] were risk factors for vertebral fracture. The lower levels between two tristratified indicators, the higher the vertebral fracture rate. The risk of fracture was 2.5 and 2 times higher in the lowest stratum than in the highest stratum, with an adjusted OR was[2.112, 95%CI(1.310, 3.404)] and [2.331, 95%CI(1.453, 3.739)], respectively. CONCLUSION: Serum low HDL/LDL and t-PINP /ß-CTX are independent risk factors for OPVF in elderly women, and have good predictive value for OPVF risk.

NASH (non-alcoholic steatohepatitis) is a severe liver disease characterized by hepatic chronic inflammation that can be associated with the gut microbiota. In this study, we explored the therapeutic effect of Gynostemma pentaphyllum extract (GPE), a Chinese herbal extract, on methionine- and choline-deficient (MCD) diet-induced NASH mice. Based on the peak area, the top ten compounds in GPE were hydroxylinolenic acid, rutin, hydroxylinoleic acid, vanillic acid, methyl vanillate, quercetin, pheophorbide A, protocatechuic acid, aurantiamide acetate, and iso-rhamnetin. We found that four weeks of GPE treatment alleviated hepatic confluent zone inflammation, hepatocyte lipid accumulation, and lipid peroxidation in the mouse model. According to the 16S rRNA gene V3-V4 region sequencing of the colonic contents, the gut microbiota structure of the mice was significantly changed after GPE supplementation. Especially, GPE enriched the abundance of potentially beneficial bacteria such as Akkerrmansia and decreased the abundance of opportunistic pathogens such as Klebsiella. Moreover, RNA sequencing revealed that the GPE group showed an anti-inflammatory liver characterized by the repression of the NF-kappa B signaling pathway compared with the MCD group. Ingenuity Pathway Analysis (IPA) also showed that GPE downregulated the pathogen-induced cytokine storm pathway, which was associated with inflammation. A high dose of GPE (HGPE) significantly downregulated the expression levels of the tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), myeloid differentiation factor 88 (Myd88), cluster of differentiation 14 (CD14), and Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) genes, as verified by real-time quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR). Our results suggested that the therapeutic potential of GPE for NASH mice may be related to improvements in the intestinal microenvironment and a reduction in liver inflammation.

This study aimed to evaluate whether palliative surgery for metastatic lesion could provide a survival benefit in metastatic breast cancer (MBC) patients with solitary metastasis. De novo MBC patients with solitary distant lesions were enrolled utilizing the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. Propensity score matching (PSM) was conducted to form matched pairs of the surgery group and the non-surgery group. The breast cancer-specific survival (BCSS) and overall survival (OS) outcomes between the 2 groups were compared in the following 3 sample models: the entire cohort of MBC (7665 cases); subgroups of patients with different isolated metastatic organs; and subgroups of patients with different molecular subtypes for each isolated metastatic organ. Compared with the Non-surgery group, the surgery group showed better BCSS and OS before PSM (HR = 0.88, 95% CI = 0.79-0.99, P = .04 and HR = 0.85, 95% CI = 0.76-0.95, P = .006, respectively). After PSM, palliative surgery still provided an OS benefit in patients with brain metastasis and lung metastasis (HR = 0.59, 95% CI = 0.37-0.95, P = .01 and HR = 0.64, 95% CI = 0.45-0.90, P = .02, respectively). Likewise, a better BCSS benefit was also found in the subset of patients with brain metastasis (HR = 0.61, 95% CI = 0.38-1.00, P = .01). Further stratification analysis indicated that patients with the luminal A subtype with brain metastasis have a better BCSS (HR = 0.36, 95% CI = 0.16-0.79, P = .04) and OS (HR = 0.37, 95% CI = 0.18-0.75, P = .03) after undergoing palliative surgery than nonsurgical treatment. Our study originality showed that palliative surgery for metastatic lesion could improve survival prognosis in patients with special single-organ metastasis and specific molecular subtypes. More clinical studies are needed to determine whether palliative surgery should be performed in MBC patients.

Objective: The relationship between macrophages and the gut microbiota in patients with atherosclerosis remains poorly defined, and effective biological markers are lacking. This study aims to elucidate the interplay between gut microbial communities and macrophages, and to identify biomarkers associated with the destabilization of atherosclerotic plaques. The goal is to enhance our understanding of the underlying molecular pathways and to pave new avenues for diagnostic approaches and therapeutic strategies in the disease. Methods: This study employed Weighted Gene Co-expression Network Analysis (WGCNA) and differential expression analysis on atherosclerosis datasets to identify macrophage-associated genes and quantify the correlation between these genes and gut microbiota gene sets. The Random Forest algorithm was utilized to pinpoint PLEK, IRF8, BTK, CCR1, and CD68 as gut microbiota-related macrophage genes, and a nomogram was constructed. Based on the top five genes, a Non-negative Matrix Factorization (NMF) algorithm was applied to construct gut microbiota-related macrophage clusters and analyze their potential biological alterations. Subsequent single-cell analyses were conducted to observe the expression patterns of the top five genes and the interactions between immune cells. Finally, the expression profiles of key molecules were validated using clinical samples from atherosclerosis patients. Results: Utilizing the Random Forest algorithm, we ultimately identified PLEK, IRF8, CD68, CCR1, and BTK as gut microbiota-associated macrophage genes that are upregulated in atherosclerotic plaques. A nomogram based on the expression of these five genes was constructed for use as an auxiliary tool in clinical diagnosis. Single-cell analysis confirmed the specific expression of gut microbiota-associated macrophage genes in macrophages. Clinical samples substantiated the high expression of PLEK in unstable atherosclerotic plaques. Conclusion: Gut microbiota-associated macrophage genes (PLEK, IRF8, CD68, CCR1, and BTK) may be implicated in the pathogenesis of atherosclerotic plaques and could serve as diagnostic markers to aid patients with atherosclerosis.

BACKGROUND: The causality of the relationship between bronchiectasis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) remains unclear. This study aims to investigate the potential causal relationship between them, with a specific focus on the role of airway inflammation, infections, smoking as the mediators in the development of COPD. METHODS: We conducted a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to assess: (1) the causal impact of bronchiectasis on COPD, sex, smoking status, infections, eosinophil and neutrophil counts, as well as the causal impact of COPD on bronchiectasis; (2) the causal effect of smoking status, infections and neutrophil counts on COPD; and (3) the extent to which the smoking status, infections and neutrophil counts might mediate any influence of bronchiectasis on the development of COPD. RESULTS: COPD was associated with a higher risk of bronchiectasis (OR 1.28 [95% CI 1.05, 1.56]). Bronchiectasis was associated with a higher risk of COPD (OR 1.08 [95% CI 1.04, 1.13]), higher levels of neutrophil (OR 1.01 [95% CI 1.00, 1.01]), higher risk of respiratory infections (OR 1.04 [95% CI 1.02, 1.06]) and lower risk of smoking. The causal associations of higher neutrophil cells, respiratory infections and smoking with higher COPD risk remained after performing sensitivity analyses that considered different models of horizontal pleiotropy, with OR 1.17, 1.69 and 95.13, respectively. The bronchiectasis-COPD effect was 0.99, 0.85 and 122.79 with genetic adjustment for neutrophils, respiratory infections and smoking. CONCLUSION: COPD and bronchiectasis are mutually causal. And increased neutrophil cell count and respiratory infections appears to mediate much of the effect of bronchiectasis on COPD.

Inspired by the structure of dysoxylactam A (DLA) that has been demonstrated to reverse P-glycoprotein (P-gp)-mediated multidrug resistance (MDR) effectively, 61 structurally simplified cyclolipopeptides were thus designed and synthesized via an effective method, and their reversing P-gp-mediated MDR potentials were evaluated, which provided a series of more potent analogues and allowed us to explore their structure-activity relationship (SAR). Among them, a well-simplified compound, 56, with only two chiral centers that all derived from amino acids dramatically reversed drug resistance in KBV200 cells at 10 µM in combination with vinorelbine (VNR), paclitaxel (PTX), and adriamycin (ADR), respectively, which is more promising than DLA. The mechanism study showed that 56 reversed the MDR of tumor cells by inhibiting the transport function of P-gp rather than reducing its expression. Notably, compound 56 effectively restored the sensitivity of MDR tumors to VNR in vivo at a dosage without obvious toxicity.

Phytochemical investigation into the medium polar fraction of the ethanol extract of Euphorbia peplus led to the identification of 32 diterpenoids with five structural types. Compounds 1-5 and 7-11 are reported for the first time, while the configuration of 6,7-epoxy group of 6 was revised to be ß-oriented. Compounds 1-5 feature a rare structural variation of the double bond at Δ1 migrating to Δ1(10) in the tigliane-type diterpenoid family. Biologically, compound 21 was found to be the only one to show moderate cytotoxic activity, associated with the presence of a benzoyloxy residue at C-16. Besides, compounds 4, 8, 12, 13, 16, and 19 show significant inhibitory activities against NO production induced by LPS in RAW264.7 macrophage cells, with IC50 values within 2-5 µM. Structure-activity relationship (SAR) analysis revealed that the ingenane-type diterpenoids have the best anti-inflammatory activity, and the esterification at 3-OH or 5-OH is crucial. Further biological researches demonstrated that 13, the predominant metabolite in this plant, exerts anti-inflammatory effects by blocking the activation of NF-κB and MAPK signaling pathways.

Neurosynovial tumors, originating from Schwann cells within nerve sheaths, are benign entities, with 25% to 45% manifesting in the head and neck region. However, occurrences in the pterygopalatine fossa (PPF) are exceptionally rare, and only a handful of cases have been documented. In this report, we present the unique case of a 6-year-old child exhibiting a sizable soft tissue mass in the left PPF, extending into the inferior orbital fissure. The patient underwent successful intranasal endoscopic removal of PPF schwannoma utilizing the prelacrimal recess approach, with postoperative pathology confirming the diagnosis of schwannoma. Schwannomas within the PPF are particularly uncommon, and instances of such tumors in pediatric patients are even more exceptional. This case highlights the diagnostic and therapeutic challenges associated with PPF schwannomas in children, emphasizing the significance of a multidisciplinary approach for optimal management. In addition, a comprehensive literature review is presented to provide insights into the existing knowledge on this rare entity, further contributing to the understanding of pediatric PPF schwannomas.

BACKGROUND: A new concept of HER2-low has emerged in recent years. However, the prognostic value and the relapse pattern of HER2-low is unclear. METHODS: Our study included patients diagnosed with HER2-negative/hormone receptor-positive breast cancer to explore the differences in survival outcomes between the HER2-low group and the HER2-zero group. More importantly, we explored different recurrence patterns, including the comparison of metastatic sites and recurrence time curve between the two groups. RESULTS: A total of 797 patients with hormone receptor-positive breast cancer were analyzed. Similar disease-free survival (DFS) was observed between the HER2-low group and HER2-zero group (HR 0.84, 95% CI: 0.61-1.16, p = 0.290). There was also no significant difference in OS between the HER2-low group and the HER2-zero group (HR 0.77, 95% CI: 0.46-1.28, p = 0.310). When IHC 1+ and 0 were taken as a group, the IHC 2+ group had significantly better DFS than the IHC 1+ and 0 group in some subgroups. The risk of bone metastasis in patients with HER2 IHC 1+ and 0 was significantly higher than that of patients with HER2 IHC 2+ (12.7% vs. 4.7%, p < 0.001). Compared with the HER2-zero group, we found that the HER2-low group had a more obvious peak in mortality at the time of postoperative 80th-100th month. CONCLUSIONS: No significant difference in DFS and OS between the HER2-low group and the HER2-zero group was observed. Patients with HER2 IHC 1+ and 0 tend to develop bone metastasis. The HER2-low group had a more obvious second peak in mortality.

BACKGROUND: Hormone receptor-positive (HR+)/human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-positive (HER2+) breast cancer exhibits considerable heterogeneity, and it is of great interest whether patients with premenopausal HR+/HER2+ breast cancer treated with trastuzumab can benefit from ovarian function suppression (OFS) therapy similarly to HR+/HER2- breast cancer. Here, we conducted a real-world study in this population to identify both who would derive substantial benefits from the addition of OFS and clinicopathological factors with potential prognostic value. METHODS: Multicenter data from 253 premenopausal patients with HR+/HER2+ early-stage breast cancer who received trastuzumab from October 2009 to October 2018 were retrospectively included. The Kaplan-Meier method was used for survival analysis, while the log-rank test was used to compare the survival rates. Univariate and multifactor Cox regression analyses were performed to analyze the independent risk factors affecting invasive disease-free survival (IDFS). RESULTS: After a median follow-up of 98.50 months, compared with tamoxifen/toremifene alone, tamoxifen/toremifene/aromatase inhibitors plus OFS demonstrated significant benefits in the overall study population (HR = 0.289, 95% CI: 0.100-0.835, p = 0.022, 8-year IDFS rate: 90.78% vs. 95.54%), especially in the lymph node-positive subgroup and age ≤40 years subgroup. Age ≤40 years, histological grade >2, lymph node involvement, PR ≤50%, and tamoxifen alone were independent prognostic factors. CONCLUSIONS: For premenopausal HR+ breast cancer patients, HER2 positivity alone is an indication for the addition of OFS in adjuvant endocrine therapy. Age, histological grade, lymph node status, the expression of PR, and OFS treatment were independent prognostic factors in this population.

In recent decades, using circulating tumor cell (CTC), circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA), circulating tumor RNA (ctRNA), exosomes and etc. as liquid biomarkers has received enormous attention in various tumors, including breast cancer (BC). To date, efforts in the area of liquid biopsy predominantly focus on the analysis of blood-based markers. It is worth noting that the identifications of markers from non-blood sources provide unique advantages beyond the blood and these alternative sources may be of great significance in offering supplementary information in certain settings. Here, we outline the latest advances in the analysis of non-blood biomarkers, predominantly including urine, saliva, cerebrospinal fluid, pleural fluid, stool and etc. The unique advantages of such testings, their current limitations and the appropriate use of non-blood assays and blood assays in different settings are further discussed. Finally, we propose to highlight the challenges of these alternative assays from basic to clinical implementation and explore the areas where more investigations are warranted to elucidate its potential utility.

Background: The proportion of young breast cancer patients in China is significantly higher than in Western countries, and the clinicopathological characteristics and clinical problems faced by patients in China are different from those in Western countries too, so there is an urgent need to conduct some studies for young breast cancer patients in Asia. Methods: This study consisted of two breast cancer cohorts in China. The population-based cohort involved breast cancer cases diagnosed in 2000-2017 via cancer registration system, and we describe the epidemiological characteristics of the young breast cancer in China. The hospital-based cohort, patients eligible for enrollment were breast cancer in young women (≤35 years old) from eight centres in different regions of China, diagnosed and treated for the first time in six time periods (i.e., 2000, 2003, 2006, 2009, 2012, and 2015). Patient demographic characteristics and clinical features were compared among the six time periods using a trend test. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to generate survival curves, and the log-rank test was performed to compare OS and DFS. Univariate and multivariate analyses were carried out using Cox proportional hazards regression to estimate hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Findings: In the population-based cohort, age-specific incidence and age-standardised percentages of breast cancer cases younger than 35 years were increased. The proportion of breast cancer under the age of 35 is increasing more rapidly in rural areas than in urban areas. In the hospital-based cohort, a total of 1308 young breast cancer patients (≤35 years old) were collected. Proportion of patients treated with adjuvant taxane or anthracycline combined with taxane is gradually increasing over the six time periods, and the proportion of patients undergoing breast-conserving surgery is gradually increasing too. Meanwhile, the patients treated with combined ovarian function suppression (OFS) endocrine therapy gradually increased, and the duration of endocrine therapy gradually longer. There is an increasing trend in 5-year disease-free survival (DFS) rate for the total population in the six time periods between 2000 and 2015, but no significant difference in overall survival (OS) rate was observed. Early staging and longer duration of endocrine therapy were factors associated with a favorable prognosis. Interpretation: The incidence of younger breast cancers under 35 years of age has gradually increased and the pattern of patient care has changed significantly over time, which may contribute to the improved prognosis of younger breast cancer patients. Sesterterpenoids are a very rare class of important natural products. Three new skeletal spiro sesterterpenoids, named orientanoids A-C (1-3), were isolated from Hedyosmum orientale. Their structures were determined by a combination of spectroscopic data, X-ray crystallography, and total synthesis. To obtain adequate materials for biological research, the bioinspired total syntheses of 1-3 were effectively achieved in 7-8 steps in overall yields of 2.3-6.4% from the commercially available santonin without using any protecting groups. In addition, this work also revised the stereochemistry of hedyosumins B (6) and C (10) as 11R-configuration. Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) have emerged as important therapeutic targets in cancer therapy. The in-depth biological evaluation revealed that these sesterterpenoids antagonized the protumoral and immunosuppressive functional phenotype of macrophages in vitro. Among them, the most potent and major compound 1 inhibited protumoral M2-like macrophages and activated cytotoxic CD8+ T cells, and consequently inhibited tumor growth in vivo.

Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is the most prevalent benign tumor of the salivary glands, characterized by both epithelial and mesenchymal differentiation. It primarily originates within the parotid and submandibular glands, with only rare occurrences in the minor salivary glands. PA in the sinonasal area is extremely rare. Herein, we present a case of a 61-year-old female with a large soft tissue mass in the paranasal sinus and nasal cavity, as evidenced by computed tomography imaging. The patient suffered from repeated nasal congestion for more than 6 months. Eventually, the mass was completely resected using an endoscopic endonasal prelacrimal approach under general anesthesia. Postoperative pathological examination revealed the presence of PA in the nasal sinus.

Three new germacranolide sesquiterpene lactones (SLs), strochunolides A-C (1-3, respectively), and a new guaianolide SL, strochunolide D (4), were isolated from Strobocalyx chunii and structurally characterized. Compound 1 is the first example of a dihomo-germacranolide SL, characterized by an unprecedented 6/10/5 tricyclic scaffold incorporating an additional fused δ-lactone C-ring. The structure of a known germacranolide SL, spicatolide C (5), was revised as its 8-epimer. Compound 3 exhibited potent in vitro cytotoxic activity against the HL-60 cell line, with an IC50 value of 0.18 ± 0.01 µM.

OBJECTIVE: Endocrine therapy with fulvestrant has shown synergistic antitumor effects with some chemotherapy drugs in vitro. This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of fulvestrant with vinorelbine in patients with hormone receptor positive (HR+)/human epidermal growth factor receptor-2-negative (HER2-) recurrent or metastatic breast cancer. METHODS: Patients were intramuscularly administered fulvestrant 500 mg (day 1 per cycle for 28 days) and oral vinorelbine (60 mg/m2 on days 1, 8, and 15 of each cycle). The primary endpoint was progression-free survival (PFS). Secondary endpoints included overall survival, objective response rate, disease control rate, duration of response, and safety. RESULTS: A total of 38 patients with HR+/HER2- advanced breast cancer included in the study were followed up for a median time of 25.1 months. The overall median PFS was 9.86 months [95% confidence interval (CI) 7.2-23.13], and the median PFS of the first-line and the second-line treatment population was 20.73 months (95% CI 9.82 to NR) and 4.27 months (95% CI 3.68 to NR), respectively. Most adverse events reported were of grade 1/2, and none were of grade 4/5. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first exploratory study of a fulvestrant and oral vinorelbine regimen in the treatment of HR+/HER2- recurrent and metastatic breast cancer. The combination chemo-endocrine therapy was efficacious, safe, and promising for patients with HR+/HER2- advanced breast cancer.

RESUMO

Salivary duct carcinoma (SDC) is an uncommon but highly aggressive tumor with a poor prognosis. SDC mainly arises from the major salivary glands, typically the parotid gland. Here, we report a rare case of sinonasal SDC in a 54-year-old male patient that might have originated from the inferior turbinate. The patient presented with left nasal congestion and rhinorrhea. Following an endoscopic intervention, the histopathological examination revealed a diagnosis of SDC, characterized by the formation of solid cancer nests and central comedo-type necrosis. Given the highly aggressive nature and unfavorable prognosis of SDC, it is essential to consider it as a differential diagnosis for unilateral nasal tumors.

OBJECTIVE: The choice of chemotherapeutic regimen for triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) remains controversial. Homologous recombination deficiency (HRD) has attracted increasing attention in informing chemotherapy treatment. This study was aimed at investigating the feasibility of HRD as a clinically actionable biomarker for platinum-containing and platinum-free therapy. METHODS: Chinese patients with TNBC who received chemotherapy between May 1, 2008 and March 31, 2020 were retrospectively analyzed with a customized 3D-HRD panel. HRD positivity was defined by an HRD score ≥ 30 or deleterious BRCA1/2 mutation. A total of 386 chemotherapy-treated patients with TNBC were screened from a surgical cohort (NCT01150513) and a metastatic cohort, and 189 patients with available clinical and tumor sequencing data were included. RESULTS: In the entire cohort, 49.2% (93/189) of patients were identified as HRD positive (40 with deleterious BRCA1/2 mutations and 53 with BRCA1/2 intact with an HRD score of ≥ 30). In the first-line metastatic setting, platinum therapy was associated with longer median progression-free survival (mPFS) than platinum-free therapy [9.1 vs. 3.0 months; hazard ratio (HR), 0.43; 95% confidence interval 0.22-0.84; P = 0.01]. Among HRD-positive patients, the mPFS was significantly longer in those treated with platinum rather than platinum-free therapy (13.6 vs. 2.0 months; HR, 0.11; P = 0.001). Among patients administered a platinum-free regimen, HRD-negative patients showed a PFS significantly superior to that of HRD-positive patients (P = 0.02; treatment-biomarker P-interaction = 0.001). Similar results were observed in the BRCA1/2-intact subset. In the adjuvant setting, HRD-positive patients tended to benefit more from platinum chemotherapy than from platinum-free chemotherapy (P = 0.05, P-interaction = 0.02). CONCLUSIONS: HRD characterization may guide decision-making regarding the use of platinum treatment in patients with TNBC in both adjuvant and metastatic settings.

A series of Cp* Rh-based discrete architectures was constructed by selecting four ether bipyridyl ligands and three half-sandwich rhodium(III) bimetallic construction units, respectively. This study demonstrates a strategy for making the transition from a binuclear D-shaped ring to a tetranuclear [2]catenane by adjusting the length of bipyridyl ligands. In addition, changing the position on the naphthyl group of the bipyridyl ligand from 2,6- to 1,5-position substitution can realize the selective synthesis of [2]catenane and Borromean rings under similar conditions. The above-mentioned constructions have been determined via X-ray crystallographic analysis, detailed NMR techniques, electrospray ionization-time-of-flight/mass spectrometry analysis, and elemental analysis.
