RESUMO

Elevated concentrations of formaldehyde and other carbonyl compounds are frequently observed in the marine atmosphere but are often significantly underestimated by atmospheric models. To evaluate the potential impact of marine sources on atmospheric formaldehyde, high-resolution measurements were conducted at a coastal site (∼15 m from the sea) during the summer in Qingdao, China. Observed formaldehyde levels averaged 2.4 ± 0.9 ppbv (1 ppbv = 10-9 L L-1), with peaks reaching 6.8 ppbv. Backward trajectories indicate that formaldehyde concentrations remained high in marine air masses. Formaldehyde exhibited weak correlations with primary pollutants such as NO and CO but showed strong correlations with marine tracers, notably methyl ethyl ketone and 1-butene. Chamber experiments confirmed that the photodecomposition of Enteromorpha released large amounts of formaldehyde and marine tracer species. When normalized to acetylene, the levels of formaldehyde, 1-butene, and MEK increased by factors of 3.8, 8.1, and 3.5, respectively. Results from an observation-based chemical box model simulation, which utilizes the Master Chemical Mechanism (MCM), revealed that formaldehyde contributes 56% to the primary source of HO2 radicals, while neglecting formaldehyde chemistry would lead to a 15% reduction in coastal ozone production rates. This study interlinks oceanic biology and atmospheric chemistry, advancing the understanding of the ocean's role as a significant source of organic compounds and its contribution to carbon cycling.

Background: Multimodal imaging plays a crucial role in evaluating suspected cardiac tumours. In recent years, three-dimensional (3D) printing technology has continued to advance such that image-based 3D-printed models have been incorporated into the auxiliary diagnosis and treatment of cardiac tumour diseases. The purpose of this review is to analyze the existing literature on the application of 3D printing in cardiac tumour surgery to examine the current status of the application of this technology. Methods: By searching PubMed, Cochrane, Scopus and Google Scholar, as well as other resource databases, a completed review of the available literature was performed. Effect sizes from published studies were investigated, and results are presented concerning the use of 3D surgical planning in the management of cardiac tumours. Results: According to the reviewed literature, our study comes to the point that 3D printing is a valuable technique for planning surgery for cardiac tumours. As shown in the review report, Mucinous and sarcomatous tumours are the most commonly used tumours for 3D printing, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) are the most commonly used technologies for preparing 3D printing models, the main printing technology is stereolithography, and the most used 3D modeling software is Mimics. The printing time and cost required for 3D printing are affected by factors such as the size of the type, complexity, the printed material and the 3D printing technology used. The reported research shows that 3D printing can understand the anatomy of complex tumour cases, virtual surgical simulation, as well as facilitate doctor-patient communication and clinical teaching. Conclusions: These results show that the development of 3D printing technology has brought more accurate and safe perioperative treatment options for patients with cardiac tumours. Therefore, 3D printing technology is expected to become a routine clinical diagnosis and treatment tool for cardiac tumours.

Retroperitoneal liposarcoma (RLPS) is the main subtype of retroperitoneal soft sarcoma (RSTS) and has a poor prognosis and few treatment options, except for surgery. The proteomic and metabolic profiles of RLPS have remained unclear. The aim of our study was to reveal the metabolic profile of RLPS. Here, we performed proteomic analysis (n = 10), metabolomic analysis (n = 51), and lipidomic analysis (n = 50) of retroperitoneal dedifferentiated liposarcoma (RDDLPS) and retroperitoneal well-differentiated liposarcoma (RWDLPS) tissue and paired adjacent adipose tissue obtained during surgery. Data analysis mainly revealed that glycolysis, purine metabolism, pyrimidine metabolism and phospholipid formation were upregulated in both RDDLPS and RWDLPS tissue compared with the adjacent adipose tissue, whereas the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, lipid absorption and synthesis, fatty acid degradation and biosynthesis, as well as glycine, serine, and threonine metabolism were downregulated. Of particular importance, the glycolytic inhibitor 2-deoxy-D-glucose and pentose phosphate pathway (PPP) inhibitor RRX-001 significantly promoted the antitumor effects of the MDM2 inhibitor RG7112 and CDK4 inhibitor abemaciclib. Our study not only describes the metabolic profiles of RDDLPS and RWDLPS, but also offers potential therapeutic targets and strategies for RLPS.

An anomalous left coronary artery originating from the pulmonary artery (ALCAPA) refers to the abnormal origin of the left coronary artery either from the main pulmonary artery, pulmonary artery sinus, or the left and right pulmonary arteries, with the main pulmonary artery or pulmonary artery sinus being the most common sites. If not diagnosed and treated promptly, this condition can result in death within the first year of life in 90% of patients. Asymptomatic children can survive into adulthood, but they are at a high risk of sudden death. In this article, we report a case of a 24-year-old pregnant woman who was diagnosed with ALCAPA during prenatal examination. The pregnancy was successfully maintained until 36 weeks, after which a cesarean section was performed. The patient was then admitted to the cardiac surgery department to improve cardiac function, and six weeks later, a successful left coronary artery transplantation was performed. The patient was discharged and followed up for three months, during which her condition remained stable.

Purpose: Sonodynamic therapy (SDT), with its high tissue penetration and noninvasive advantages, represents an emerging approach to eradicating solid tumors. However, the outcomes of SDT are typically hampered by the low oxygen content and immunosuppression in the tumor microenvironment (TME). Accordingly, we constructed a cascade nanoplatform to regulate the TME and improve the anti-tumor efficiency of SDT. Methods: In this study, we rationally design cascade nanoplatform by incorporating immunostimulant hyaluronic acid (HA) and sonosensitizer chlorin e6 (Ce6) on the polydopamine nanocarrier that is pre-doped with platinum nanozymes (designated Ce6/Pt@PDA-HA, PPCH). Results: The cascade reactions of PPCH are evidenced by the results that HA exhibits reversing immunosuppressive that converts M2 macrophages into M1 macrophages in situ, while producing H2O2, and then platinum nanozymes further catalyze the H2O2 to produce O2, and O2 produces abundant singlet oxygen (1O2) under the action of Ce6 and low-intensity focused ultrasound (LIFU), resulting in a domino effect and further amplifying the efficacy of SDT. Due to its pH responsiveness and mitochondrial targeting, PPCH effectively accumulates in tumor cells. Under LIFU irradiation, PPCH effectively reverses immunosuppression, alleviates hypoxia in the TME, enhances reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, and enhances SDT efficacy for eliminating tumor cells in vivo and in vitro. Meanwhile, an in vivo dual-modal imaging including fluorescence and photoacoustic imaging achieves precise tumor diagnosis. Conclusion: This cascade nanoplatform will provide a promising strategy for enhancing SDT eradication against tumors by modulating immunosuppression and relieving hypoxia.

In this study, a novel iron-encapsulated biochar (Fe@BC) was prepared using the biomass cultivated with an iron-containing solution. The iron in Fe@BC showed the phase change from Fe3O4 to α-Fe, and to CFe15.1, with the increase of pyrolysis temperature (500-900 °C), and a graphene shell formed on the surface of Fe@BC. In addition, the signals assigned to the π-π* shake up, pyridinic N, graphitic N, and defects of Fe@BC were found to be stronger as the pyrolysis temperature increased. The F4@B9 sample, which was prepared at 900 °C, exhibited an excellent performance (98.01 %) to activate peroxydisulfate (PDS) for the degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenol. Electron paramagnetic resonanceand chemical quenching experiments revealed that reactive oxygen radicals (ROS) including sulfate radical (•SO4-), hydroxyl radical (•OH), superoxide radical (•O2-), and singlet oxygen (1O2) existed in the F4@B9/PDS system. Furthermore, the micro-electrolysis process facilitated the generation of •O2- (12.35 %) and 1O2 (6.49 %) compared with the pure PDS system. Density functional theory revealed that, for the F4@B9-activated PDS process, the graphene shell of F4@B9 served as catalytic active sites as well. According to the correlation analysis, the iron specie of CFe15.1 was more favorable for the generation of ROS than α-Fe. Also, π-π* shake up, pyridinic N, graphitic N, and defects participated in the PDS activation. This study provides a new method for the preparation of high-performance catalysts from naturally grown biomass with high iron contents.

This work investigated the removal of cadmium ions (Cd2+) by using biochar derived from Barracuda Grass. The biochars derived from the pyrolysis of roots (BGR), stems (BGS) and leaves (BGL) were characterized and their performance for cadmium adsorption was studied at varying parameters of temperature, time, and alkali (earth) metal concentrations. The maximum adsorption amount at equilibrium of BGR, BGS and BGL was determined experimentally as 8.38 mg/g, 42.12 mg/g, and 30.39 mg/g. Adsorption fitting results revealed that Cd2+ adsorbed on BGR and BGS preferred to be multilayer-covered, and BGL was more likely to have monolayer-covered functions. The kinetic data fitted well to the pseudo-second-order model (R 2 > 0.99), revealing the adsorption process was a spontaneous monolayer chemisorption process. The results of alkaline (earth) metals leaching of biochar revealed that the inherent alkaline (earth) metals in biochar made inhibitory functions on the Cd2+ adsorption behavior by occupying the active sites. And in the process of wastewater treatment, the leaching of alkaline earth metals might enhance the complexation reaction between surface groups and Cd2+. This study provides a feasible strategy for the resource utilization of abundant hydrophytic plants in waste management.

Accurate diagnosis and surgical selection of the double-outlet right ventricle (DORV) is both critical and difficult. Virtual models and three-dimensional (3D) printing have been used to provide morphological copies to doctors as reference. However, the existing methods have shortcomings in visualization of the surgical results, optimal surgical design, and accurate surgical scheme measurements. To overcome this problem, we performed surgical predictions by designing the intraventricular baffle and ventricular septal defect patch to evaluate surgical options and using 3D printing to guide the trimming of the baffle or patch. A complete set of processes including scanning, modeling, designing, 3D printing, and guiding the trimming of the baffle for the diagnosis and surgical planning of DORV was established. Six cases were used to evaluate the feasibility of this method. The average rate of misdiagnosis of the six cases by computed tomography and echocardiography was 42.5%, which was reduced to 4.6% when the diagnosis was established using the virtual models and 3D printing as auxiliary tools. The approach effectively improved diagnostic accuracy, guided the operation, and simplified the process of patch trimming. The proposed method can thus be used for improving the surgical simulation and guiding of the DORV surgery.

Palmitic acid (PA), a widely consumed saturated fat, is known to induce the apoptosis of vascular endothelial cells. This study examined the protective effect of anthocyanin from red radish (ARR), which has been shown to protect the cardiovascular system and is rich in polyacylated pelargonidin (P) glycosides, on PA-treated SV 40 transfected aortic rat endothelial cells (SVAREC). In all, 22 distinct anthocyanins were identified in the ARR via ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry, the most abundant of which were pelargonidin-3-(p-coumaroyl)diglucoside-5-glucoside (31.60%), pelargonidin-3-(feruloyl)diglucoside-5-(malonyl)glucoside (22.98%), pelargonidin-3-(p-coumaroyl)diglucoside-5-(malonyl)glucoside (8.02%), and pelargonidin-3-(feruloyl)diglucoside-5-glucoside (6.25%). P displayed the highest serum level (93.72%) in the ARR-treated mice, while polyacylated P glucosides were also absorbed intact. Furthermore, ARR treatment effectively increased cellular activity and reduced the ratio of Bcl-2-associated X protein : B cell lymphoma-2, while simultaneously alleviating the excessive production of reactive oxygen species in PA-treated SVAREC. Transcriptome and further verification analyses confirmed that the ARR-inhibiting PA-induced apoptosis of SVAREC was related to the p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling pathway. Our results are the first to demonstrate that ARR may be a promising phytochemical in the prevention of PA-induced endothelial dysfunction.

Existing lithium-ion-conducting covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are mainly two-dimensional, in which the one-dimensional channels are difficult to completely and uniformly stack in the same direction, particularly in the case of powdered COFs, resulting in the hindrance of ion transport at the grain boundary or at the interface of the powder contact. In this contribution, poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)-functionalized three-dimensional COFs with 3D channels were successfully constructed for ion conduction in different directions, which is conducive to reducing the grain boundary and interface contact resistance. Combined with the coupling behaviour between the PEG chain segments and Li-ions, the 3D COF incorporated with LiTFSI achieves a high ionic conductivity of 3.6 × 10-4 S cm-1 at 260 °C. The maximum operating temperature is higher than the boiling point of commercial organic electrolytes, indicating the excellent security of PEG-based COFs as Li-ion polyelectrolytes at high temperature.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this research was to explore the application value of a three-dimensional (3D)-printed heart in surgery for left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) obstruction. METHODS: From August 2019 to October 2021, 46 patients with LVOT obstruction underwent surgical treatment at our institution. According to the treatment method, 22 and 24 patients were allocated to the experimental and control groups, respectively. In the experimental group, each patient's 3D-printed heart model was used for simulated preoperative surgery, and then the Morrow operation was performed. In the control group, only the Morrow operation was performed, without simulated preoperative surgery using a 3D-printed heart model. The intraoperative and postoperative data of patients in the two groups were recorded, and the clinical data of patients were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: The operation time, cardiopulmonary bypass time, intraoperative blood loss, hospitalization time, LVOT pressure difference (LVP), postoperative interventricular septal thickness (IST), aortic regurgitation (AR), systolic anterior motion (SAM), and postoperative left ventricular flow velocity (LVFV) were significantly lower in the experimental group than in the control group (P < 0.05). The inner diameter of the left ventricular outflow tract (IDLV) was larger in the experimental group than in the control group (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference in the postoperative ejection fraction, atrioventricular block rate or complication rate between the two groups (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: A 3D-printed heart model for simulated surgery in vitro is conducive to formulating a more reasonable surgical plan and reducing the trauma and duration of surgery, thereby promoting the recovery and maintenance of the heart.

The multifunctional nano-carrier system can simultaneously achieve multiple functions such as diagnostic imaging, targeted delivery of anti-tumor drugs, and combined therapy. Application potential Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles have the characteristics of low toxicity, superparamagnetism and good photothermal properties. Therefore, a multifunctional magnetic nanocarrier with both magnetic targeting and photothermal properties can be prepared by surface modification of Fe3O4 o DOX is an anti-tumor drug widely used in clinical treatment, and its severe toxic and side effects greatly limit its application. In this paper, a temperature-sensitive magnetic nanocarrier was first constructed and proved to have good superparamagnetism, photothermal properties, and biocom-patibility Then, Fe3O4-Azo-DOX drug-loaded nanoparticles were constructed by covalently bonding DOX. The prepared Fe3O4-Azo-DOX nanoparticles have high stability, sensitive photothermal response and low toxicity. Finally, Fe3O4-Azo-DOX was applied to the study of combined photother-motherapy and chemotherapy in vitro and in vivo. Based on Fe3O4 nanoparticles, a temperature-sensitive Fe3O4-Azo nanocarrier was constructed and its related properties were characterized. Furthermore, anthracycline nanodrugs were used in chemotherapy of breast cancer patients, and their effects were analyzed according to echocardiography parameter change. The results show that Fe3O4-Azo nanoparticles have a good photothermal heating effect. MCF-7 breast cancer cells were selected as a model to investigate the cytotoxicity of Fe3O4-Azo. The results proved that they have excellent biocompatibility and can be used as drug carriers. A Fe3O4-Azo nanocarrier was used to load DOX to construct a NIR-responsive nano-drug delivery system. By studying the NIR controlled release of Fe3O4-Azo-DOX under different pH conditions, it can be seen that it has NIR-responsive release function and the best release effect at pH 5.7. It was found that LVEF, LVFS, and E/A were significantly lower after chemotherapy than before (P < 0.05), which had a certain clinical value in cardiotoxicity The in vitro antitumor effect of Fe3O4-Azo-DOX was studied, and the results showed that the combined effect of photothermal-chemotherapy was significantly better than the photothermal treatment based on Fe3O4-Azo carrier alone and the chemotherapy based on free DOX alone.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of acupuncture on nuclear factor kappa-B(NF-κB)signaling pathway in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), so as to explore the mechanism of acupuncture in the treatment of RA. METHODS: A total of 120 RA patients admitted to the Xinyu Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Jiangxi Province from June 2018 to June 2019 were selected and randomly divided into a control group and a treatment group, with 60 cases in each group. The patients in the control group received oral administration of Methotrexate, (10-15) mg/time, once a week, for a total of 10 weeks. On the basis of oral administration of Methotrexate, patients in the treatment group were treated with acupuncture at Quchi(LI11), Zusanli(ST36), Taichong(LR3), Hegu(LI4), Shenshu(BL23), Geshu(BL17) and Dazhui(GV14) once daily. The treatment was conducted 6 consecutive times as a course for 10 courses. The serum C-reactive protein (CRP) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), pain visual analog scale (VAS) score, number of swollen joints, and morning stiffness time before and after treatment were compared between the two groups. The expression levels of inflammatory related factors and NF-κB p65 protein in the synovial fluid were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and Western blot separately. RESULTS: After treatment, both groups had significant decrease in CRP, ESR, VAS score, number of swollen joints and morning stiffness time, levels of NF-κB p65 protein, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß), and IL-6 (P<0.05) in the joint fluid, and increase in transforming growth factor-ß (TGF-ß) and IL-10 (P<0.05). After treatment, compared with the control group, CRP, ESR, VAS score and morning stiffness time, and the levels of NF-κB p65, TNF-α, IL-1ß and IL-6 in the treatment group were down-regulated (P<0.05), while the level of TGF-ß was up-regulated (P<0.05). The treatment group had a higher total effective rate than the control groupï¼»85.0%(51/60) vs 75.0%(45/60), P<0.05ï¼½. CONCLUSION: Acupuncture can inhibit the expression of NF-κB signaling pathway in RA patients, regulate the levels of related inflammatory factors, and thus improve the symptoms of RA patients.

BACKGROUND: In this study, we aimed to assess mRNA expressions of visfatin and lipocalin-2 in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from patients with pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB). METHODS: Overall, 79 PTB patients and 71 healthy controls were enrolled. In PBMCs, mRNA expressions of visfatin and lipocalin-2 were detected using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), and the diagnostic value of these adipokine mRNAs in PTB patients was calculated through receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. RESULTS: In PBMCs from PTB patients, the visfatin mRNA level was significantly higher than in healthy controls (P < .001), with no significant association between the lipocalin-2 mRNA level and PTB patients (P = .933). In PTB patients, lipocalin-2 mRNA expression positively correlated with the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) (P = .010). However, the visfatin mRNA level was not associated with any major clinical and laboratory parameter in PTB patients. The ROC curve demonstrated that visfatin could help distinguish PTB patients from healthy controls, with an optimal cutoff value of 0.645 and a corresponding sensitivity of 79.7%. CONCLUSIONS: The altered visfatin mRNA expression indicated that this adipokine might play a role in PTB and could be an auxiliary biomarker for PTB diagnosis.

The present study investigated the chemical composition, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory activities of essential oil (EO) derived from the wild rhizomes of Atractylodes macrocephala Koidz. (AMA) growing in Qimen County (eastern China). GC/MS analysis identified fifteen compounds, representing 92.55 % of AMA EO. The major compounds were atractylone (39.22 %), ß-eudesmol (27.70 %), thymol (5.74 %), hinesol (5.50 %), and 11-isopropylidenetricyclo[4.3.1.1(2,5)]undec-3-en-10-one (4.71 %). Ferricyanide reducing, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picyrlhydrazyl (DPPH) and 3-ethyl-benzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) scavenging assays revealed that AMA EO exhibited strong antioxidant capacities. Additionally, AMA EO showed inhibitory effects on growth of Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella enterica, Staphylococcus aureus, and Bacillus subtilis, with the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) ranging from 0.5 to 2.0 mg/mL. Treatments with AMA EO also significantly inhibited nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2 ) production in lipopolysaccharide-stimulated RAW264.7 cells, indicating anti-inflammatory activity of AMA EO. Furthermore, treatments with AMA EO decreased the transcriptional levels of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), which might be the molecular mechanisms underlying its anti-inflammatory effects. Overall, these results provide a theoretical basis for further study and application of AMA EO in food and medicine products.

Although oil and gas explorations contribute to atmospheric methane (CH4) emissions, their impact and influence along the shelf seas of China remain poorly understood. From 2012 to 2017, we conducted four ship-based surveys of CH4 in the seawater column and boundary layer of the Bohai Sea, China, and further measured CO2 and several meteorological parameters. The average observed CH4 mixing ratios in the boundary layer and its concentrations in seawater column were 1950 ± 46 ppb in November 2012 (dissolved CH4 was not observed in this survey), 2222 ± 109 ppb and 13.0 ± 5.9 nmol/L in August 2014, 2014 ± 20 ppb and 5.4 ± 1.4 nmol/L in February 2017, and 1958 ± 25 ppb and 5.3 ± 3.8 nmol/L in May 2017, respectively. The results demonstrated that the CH4 emissions from the oil and gas platforms accounted for approximately 72.5 ± 27.0% of the increase in the background atmospheric CH4 in the local area. The remaining emissions were attributed to land-sea air mass transportation. Conversely, the influence of the air-sea exchange was negligible, measuring within the 10-3 ppb range. For carbon balance calibration, the mean flaring efficiency of the oil-associated gas based on the enhancement of CO2 (ΔCO2) and enhancement sum of CO2 and CH4 (ΔCO2 + ΔCH4) was 98.5 ± 0.5%. Furthermore, the CH4 emission rate from the oil and gas platforms was 0.026 ± 0.017 Tg/year, which was approximately 7.2 times greater than the sea-to-air CH4 flux over the entire Bohai Sea area. Thus, oil and gas platforms must be recognized as important artificial hotspot sources of atmospheric CH4 in the Bohai Sea.

Since the discovery of metal nanoparticles (NPs) in the 1960s, unknown toxicity, cost and the ethical hurdles of research in humans have hindered the translation of these NPs to clinical use. In this work, we demonstrate that Pt NPs with protein coronas are generated in vivo in human blood when a patient is treated with cisplatin. These self-assembled Pt NPs form rapidly, accumulate in tumors, and remain in the body for an extended period of time. Additionally, the Pt NPs are safe for use in humans and can act as anti-cancer agents to inhibit chemotherapy-resistant tumor growth by consuming intracellular glutathione and activating apoptosis. The tumor inhibitory activity is greatly amplified when the Pt NPs are loaded in vitro with the chemotherapeutic drug, daunorubicin, and the formulation is effective even in daunorubicin-resistant models. These in vivo-generated metal NPs represent a biocompatible drug delivery platform for chemotherapy resistant tumor treatment.

To investigate whether high body mass index (BMI) had adverse effects on the postoperative outcomes for patients who underwent anterior or posterior cervical fusion procedures. A literature search were conducted in PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science. Comparative or controlled studies that examined the influences of high BMI on postoperative outcomes after cervical fusion procedures were included. Using a fixed-effect model or random-effect model, the effects of high BMI were determined by weight mean difference (WMD) with 95% confidence interval (95% CI) or risk ratio (RR) with 95% CI. A total of seven studies were included in this meta-analysis. The pooled estimate showed that high BMI was associated with longer hospital stay (WMD = 1.61 days, 95% CI: 0.51, 2.71; P = 0.004), longer surgical time (WMD = 4.55, 95% CI: 1.04, 8.07; P = 0.011), higher mortality rate (RR = 3.01, 95% CI: 2.75, 3.29; P < 0.001), and higher postoperative rates of cardiac complication (RR = 1.30, 95% CI: 1.11, 1.52; P = 0.001), deep venous thromboembolism (RR = 2.29, 95% CI: 1.36, 3.86; P = 0.002), and wound complication (RR = 1.69, 95% CI: 1.26, 2.28; P < 0.001). However, there was no significant differences between high and normal BMI groups in terms of Neck Disability Index (WMD = 1.49, 95% CI: -2.34, 5.32; P = 0.447), SF-36 Mental Component Score (MCS) (WMD = -0.87, 95% CI: -2.09, 0.35; P = 0.164), overall complications (RR = 1.18, 95% CI: 0.80, 1.76; P = 0.399), central nervous system (CNS) complications (RR = 0.68, 95% CI: 0.17, 2.76; P = 0.586), pulmonary complications (RR = 1.46, 95% CI: 0.87, 2.46; P = 0.150), and septic complications (RR = 0.87, 95% CI: 0.32, 2.38; P = 0.785).High BMI seemed to be associated with longer hospital stay, surgical time, and higher postoperative complication rates compared to normal BMI. Therefore, high BMI patients should be counseled carefully regarding the risk of postoperative complications and surgical outcomes after cervical fusion procedures.

The present study recombinantly expressed a citrate synthase from cyanobacteria Anabaena sp. PCC7120 (AnCS) in Escherichia coli and characterized its enzymatic activity. The molecular mass of native AnCS was 88,533.1 Da containing two 44,162.7 Da subunits. Recombinant AnCS revealed the highest activity at pH 9.0 and 25 °C. AnCS displayed high thermal stability with a half-life time (t1/2) of approximately 6.5 h at 60 °C, which was more thermostable than most CS from general organisms, but less than those from hyperthermophilic bacteria. The Km values of oxaloacetate and acetyl-CoA were 138.50 and 18.15 µM respectively, suggesting a higher affinity to acetyl-CoA than oxaloacetate. Our inhibition assays showed that AnCS activity was not severely affected by most metal ions, but was strongly inhibited by Cu2+ and Zn2+. Treatments with ATP, ADP, AMP, NADH, and DTT depressed the AnCS activity. Overall, our results provide information on the enzymatic properties of AnCS, which contributes to the basic knowledge on CS selection for industrial utilizations.

BACKGROUND Short-segment pedicle screw instrumentation provides superior outcomes in treating thoracolumbar fractures. Nevertheless, the effect of intermediate screws on the outcome of short-segment instrumentation at the fracture level has not been specifically analyzed. We performed an update meta-analysis of the effect of additional vertebroplasty on the outcome of short-segment instrumentation to determine the role of screws for patients with fractured vertebra. MATERIAL AND METHODS A systematic literature search was conducted, updated to January 2019, in terms of the efficacy of additional vertebroplasty on the outcome of short-segment instrumentation at the fracture level. After rigorous quality review, we extracted the data from qualified clinical studies. We further analyzed odds ratios (ORs) of the endpoints of interest based on the included trials. RESULTS Compared with the control group, short-segmental fixation combined with intermediate screws restored Cobb angle (P<0.001) and reduced anterior vertebral height compression (P=0.001). However, our results did not reveal statistically significant differences in operative time (P=0.28) or estimated blood loss (P=0.23). A statistically significant difference was observed in mean hospital stay (P=0.02). CONCLUSIONS Reinforcement with fracture-level screw combination can help stabilize the fractures and restore the anatomy. Nevertheless, additional trials and studies with longer follow-ups and on larger populations are warranted to confirm the current findings.
