BACKGROUND: Previous research demonstrated the effects of Sorbaria sorbifolia (SS) in combating hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Despite SS's proven efficacy in treating HCC, the precise bioactive constituents contributing to its therapeutic benefits, along with the mechanisms behind them, warrant further exploration. PURPOSE: The objective of our study was to illuminate the possible elements, targets, and modulatory pathways employed by specific bioactive components in SS for HCC treatment. STUDY DESIGN: Using UPLC-Q-TOF-MS to analyze and quantify the bioactive constituents in the SS sample. By literature review, we gathered potential chemical constituents of SS. We used network pharmacology approaches to identify HCC-related targets of SS components, with an emphasis on core targets. To examine the core targets' importance in HCC biological processes, bioinformatics methods were utilized. Finally, molecular docking, MD simulations, and CESTA were employed to screen SS active ingredients capable of stably binding with core targets. To verify the anti-HCC effectiveness of these active components, we conducted several cellular experiments, including CCK8, wound healing, transwell, cell cycle, and apoptosis assays, as well as animal experiments like zebrafish HepG2 cell xenotransplantation, apoptosis assays, and HE staining. We also used lentivirus transfection to modulate core protein expression in HepG2 cells, creating cell models. Further cellular tests were performed to evaluate the ability of SS active ingredients to exert anti-HCC effects by interacting with the core protein to induce apoptosis. Finally, Western Blot and ELISA experiments were carried out to track changes in core protein and apoptosis-related pathway proteins after SS active ingredient treatment RESULTS: Our study identified 50 components in SS and 119 HCC-related target genes, with DHRS13 emerging as a core target. Further bioinformatics analysis indicated that DHRS13 expression in HCC patients correlated with prognosis and apoptotic pathways. Molecular docking revealed 20 active SS constituents effectively binding to DHRS13, MD simulations and CESTA pinpointed Quercetin 7-rhamnoside (Q7R) as the most stable binder. In-vitro and in-vivo tests verified Q7R's anti-HCC properties. Lentivirus transfection results showed that knockdown DHRS13 led to reduced cell growth and increased apoptosis, while overexpression DHRS13 led to increase cell growth and decrease apoptosis. Remarkably, our experiments found that Q7R acts as an inhibitor of DHRS13 and can reverse the suppressed apoptosis and excessive HCC proliferation caused by DHRS13 overexpression. CONCLUSION: Elevated DHRS13 expression contributes to HCC progression. Q7R effectively downregulates DHRS13, encouraging apoptosis and impeding HCC growth. As a result, Q7R shows potential as a therapeutic agent for HCC treatment, targeting the apoptotic pathway through DHRS13 regulation.

Upon infection with herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1), the virus deploys multiple strategies to evade the host's innate immune response. However, the mechanisms governing this phenomenon remain elusive. Here, we find that HSV-1 leads to a decrease in overall m6A levels by selectively reducing METTL14 protein during early infection in glioma cells. Specifically, the HSV-1-encoded immediate-early protein ICP0 interacts with METTL14 within ND10 bodies and serves as an E3 ubiquitin protein ligase, targeting and ubiquitinating METTL14 at the lysine 156 and 162 sites. Subsequently, METTL14 undergoes proteasomal degradation. Furthermore, METTL14 stabilizes ISG15 mRNA mediated by IGF2BP3 to promote antiviral effects. Notably, METTL14 suppression significantly enhances the anti-tumor effect of oncolytic HSV-1 (oHSV-1) in mice bearing glioma xenografts. Collectively, these findings establish that ICP0-guided m6A modification controls the antiviral immune response and suggest that targeting METTL14/ISG15 represents a potential strategy to enhance the oncolytic activity of oHSV-1 in glioma treatment.

The detrimental effects of heavy metal accumulation on both ecosystems and public health have raised widespread concern. Source-specific risk assessment is crucial for developing effective strategies to prevent and control heavy metal contamination in surface water. This study aims to investigate the contamination characteristics of heavy metals in the Yangtze River Basin, identifying the pollution sources, assessing the risk levels, and further evaluating the health risks to humans. The results indicated that the average concentrations of heavy metals were ranked as follows: zinc (Zn) > arsenic (As) > copper (Cu) > chromium (Cr) > cadmium (Cd) > nickel (Ni) > lead (Pb), with average concentrations of 38.02 µg/L, 4.34 µg/L, 2.53 µg/L, 2.10 µg/L, 1.17 µg/L, 0.84 µg/L, and 0.32 µg/L, respectively, all below the WHO 2017 standards for safe drinking water. The distribution trend indicates higher concentrations in the upper and lower reaches and lower concentrations in the mid-reaches of the river. By integrating the Absolute Principal Component Scores-Multiple Linear Regression (APCS-MLR) receptor model and Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) model, the main sources of heavy metals were identified as industrial activities (APCS-MLR: 41.3 %; PMF: 42.1 %), agricultural activities (APCS-MLR: 30.1 %; PMF: 27.4 %), and unknown mix sources (APCS-MLR: 29.1 %; PMF: 30.4 %). The calculation of the hazard index (HI) for both children and adults was <1, indicating no non-carcinogenic or carcinogenic risks. Based on the source-specific risk assessment, agricultural activities contribute the most to non-carcinogenic risks, while industrial activities pose the greatest contribution to carcinogenic risks. This study offers a reference for monitoring heavy metals and controlling health risks to residents, and provides crucial evidence for the utilization and protection of surface water in the Yangtze River Basin.

Objective: The advancement of neuroimaging and genetic research has revealed the presence of morphological abnormalities and numerous risk genes, along with their associations. We aimed to estimate magnetic resonance imaging-derived cortical thickness across multiple brain regions. Methods: The cortical thickness of 129 schizophrenia patients, 42 of their unaffected siblings, and 112 healthy controls was measured and the candidate genes were sequenced. Comparisons were made of cortical thickness (including 68 regions of the Desikan-Killiany Atlas) and genetic variants (in 108 risk genes for schizophrenia) among the three groups, and correlation analyses were performed regarding cortical thickness, clinical symptoms, cognitive tests (such as the N-back task and the logical memory test), and genetic variants. Results: Schizophrenia patients had significantly thinner bilateral frontal, temporal, and parietal gyri than healthy controls and unaffected siblings. Association analyses in target genes showed that four single nucleotide variants (SNVs) were significantly associated with schizophrenia, including thioredoxin-related transmembrane protein 2-catenin, cadherin-associated protein, delta 1 (SNV20673) (positive false discovery rate [PFDR] = 0.008) and centromere protein M (rs35542507, rs41277477, rs73165153) (PFDR = 0.030). Additionally, cortical thickness in the right pars triangularis was lower in carriers of the SNV20673 variant than in non-carriers (PFDR = 0.048). Finally, a positive correlation was found between right pars triangularis cortical thickness and logical memory in schizophrenia patients (r = 0.199, p = 0.032). Conclusions: This study identified regional morphological abnormalities in schizophrenia, including the right homologue of Broca's area, which was associated with a risk variant that affected delta-1 catenin and logical memory. These findings suggest a potential association between candidate gene loci, cortical thickness, and schizophrenia.

Tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated factor 6 (TRAF6) is an E3 ubiquitin ligase that is extensively involved in the autophagy process by interacting with diverse autophagy initiation and autophagosome maturation molecules. However, whether TRAF6 interacts with lysosomal proteins to regulate Mycobacterium-induced autophagy has not been completely characterized. Herein, the present study showed that TRAF6 interacted with lysosomal key proteins Rab7 through RING domain which caused Rab7 ubiquitination and subsequently ubiquitinated Rab7 binds to STX17 (syntaxin 17, a SNARE protein that is essential for mature autophagosome), and thus promoted the fusion of autophagosomes and lysosomes. Furthermore, TRAF6 enhanced the initiation and formation of autophagosomes in Mycobacterium-induced autophagy in both BMDMs and RAW264.7 cells, as evidenced by autophagic flux, colocalization of LC3 and BCG, autophagy rates, and autophagy-associated protein expression. Noteworthy to mention, TRAF6 deficiency exacerbated lung injury and promoted BCG survival. Taken together, these results identify novel molecular and cellular mechanisms by which TRAF6 positively regulates Mycobacterium-induced autophagy.

Nanyi Lake is a tributary in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River and the largest freshwater lake in southern Anhui. Anthropogenic activities have significantly affected the lake with the rapid development of the surrounding economy in recent years. This study collected a total of 39 × 2 water samples of surface water and overlying water, detected the heavy metal concentrations (As, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sb, Zn, Fe, Cd), and analyzed the spectral characteristics of the dissolved organic matter (DOM). The results demonstrated that the concentrations of heavy metals (As, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sb, Zn, Fe, Cd) in the surface water were 1.00-7.78, 0.40-5.59, 0.20-4.52, 20.00-269.50, 0.40-5.56, 0.20-5.06, 1.00-7.64, 20.00-252.50, 60.00-590.00, and 0.04-0.60, respectively (unit: µg L-1). The risk assessment showed that the carcinogenic risks of heavy metals (As, Cr, Cd) through drinking water were ranged from 10-7 to 10-4a-1 in Nanyi Lake, and Cr was the main carcinogen which should be the focus of environmental health risk management. The average personal non-carcinogenic risks of heavy metals (Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sb, Zn, Fe) were ranged from 10-9 to 10-13a-1, and considered to be acceptable risk level. The contour map of spatial distribution demonstrated different degrees of heavy metals (except Zn) enrichment near the Langchuan River in the East Lake District. Parallel factor analysis showed that the main components of DOM in Nanyi Lake were tryptophan like, fulvic acid like, and tyrosine like, and the dissolved organic matter was primarily derived from autogenous endogenous sources. The heavy metals Cr, Ni, Pb, Fe, Cd, and HIX in the surface water of West Lake were significantly positively correlated, among which Ni, Fe and C2 were significantly negatively correlated (P < 0.05), Mn and BIX demonstrated extremely significant positive correlations (P < 0.01), while no significant correlation was observed between heavy metals and the DOM indexes in the surface water of the East Lake. The principal component and correlation analysis showed that the heavy metals in Nanyi Lake were primarily derived from the production wastewater discharged by the surrounding industrial and mining enterprises through the rivers input, followed by the non-point source runoff input of the surrounding agricultural production and lake aquaculture.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effects of different programmed optical zones (POZs) on achieved corneal refractive power (CRP) with myopic astigmatism after small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE). METHODS: In total, 113 patients (113 eyes) were included in this retrospective study. The eyes were divided into two groups according to POZ: group A (6.5, 6.6, and 6.7 mm, n = 59) and group B (6.8, 6.9, and 7.0 mm, n = 54). Fourier vector analysis was applied to evaluate the error values between the attempted and achieved corneal refractive power (CRP). Alpins vector analysis was used to calculate surgically induced astigmatism (SIA), difference vector (DV), magnitude of error (ME), and astigmatism correction index (ACI). Multivariate regression analysis was performed to assess potential factors associated with the error values. RESULTS: The error values in the group with large POZ were closer to zero, and significantly associated with the POZ at 2 and 4 mm of the cornea (ß = - 0.50, 95% confidence interval [CI] [- 0.80, - 0.20]; ß = - 0.37, 95% CI [- 0.63, - 0.10], P < 0.05, respectively). For the correction of astigmatism, the values of SIA, ME, and ACI were lower in group B than in group A (P < 0.05). The fitting curves between TIA and SIA were y = 0.83x + 0.19 (R2 = 0.84) and y = 1.05x + 0.04 (R2 = 0.90), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Smaller POZs resulted in higher error values between the achieved- and attempted-CRP in the SMILE procedure, which should be considered when performing surgery.

Adaptor-related protein complex 1 subunit sigma 2 (AP1S2) is a subunit of AP1 that is crucial for the reformation of the synaptic vesicle. Variants in AP1S2 have been reported to cause a rare neurodevelopmental disorder, Pettigrew syndrome (PGS) (OMIM: 304,340), which is characterized by walking delay, abnormal speech, mild to profound X-linked intellectual disability (XLID), and abnormal brain, and behaviors. Here, we describe a 2-year- and 5-month-old male patient who presented with global developmental delay (GDD). Trio whole exome sequencing (WES) revealed a 5 bp duplicate in the AP1S2 gene (NM_003916.5: exon 2: c.96_100dup, p. Leu34Glnfs*8) predicted to cause early termination of translation, which was inherited from the unaffected mother. The clinical features of our patient were consistent with previous reports. This is the second case in the Chinese family and the eleventh variant found in AP1S2-related XLID. Our findings expand the AP1S2 variant spectrum in neurodevelopmental disorders and provide evidence for the application of WES in PGS diagnosis.

PURPOSE: To compare clinical outcomes after correction of moderate to high astigmatism through small-incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) with and without limbal marking. SETTING: Tianjin Eye Hospital, Tianjin, China. DESIGN: Prospective randomized comparative case series. METHODS: This prospective randomized control study included 240 unilateral eyes of 240 patients who underwent SMILE with astigmatism of more than 0.75 diopters (D). The eyes were randomly assigned to a marked group (120 eyes) or an unmarked control group (120 eyes). Manifest refraction was observed at the 3-month follow-up timepoint and evaluated using a vector analysis. RESULTS: Postoperative astigmatism differed statistically significantly in the marked group (-0.08 ± 0.15 D) and the control group (-0.16 ± 0.24 D) at 3 months ( P = .001), and correction index, index of success, angle of error (absolute value), and magnitude of error were also significantly better in the marked group ( P < .05). There was a significant positive correlation between index of success and angle of error (absolute value) ( P < .001). CONCLUSIONS: Limbal marking-based manual compensation prior to SMILE was associated with a statistically significant reduction in undercorrection and error of axis in cases of moderate to high astigmatism, although the magnitude of the difference was small.

Coal combustion can release large amounts of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which persist in various environment matrices (e.g., road dust) and hence cause the carcinogenic risk to human health. In this study, an exhaustive characterization of road dust samples coupling their physicochemical characteristics and stable isotope compositions (δ13C and δ15N) was conducted to evaluate the source, level, spatial distribution, and carcinogenic risk of PAHs in a typical coal-utilization city. Concentrations of Σ16 PAHs ranged from 605.5 to 25,374.3 ng/g with a mean concentration of 4083.0 ng/g. Pollution levels of sites around the coal-fired power plant (Zone 1) were significantly higher than those in other zones (p < 0.05). PAH concentration showed significant correlations with both C and N fractions (p < 0.01). Compositions of δ13C and δ15N in road dust coupled to principal component analysis and the partitions and diagnostic ratios of PAHs contributed to associating road dust to several local sources of contamination. Coal combustion and vehicular exhaust were major sources of PAHs around the power plant and urban area. Results of incremental lifetime cancer risk showed 81.5% of all sampling sites suffered potential risk (>10-6) for both adults and children, while children around the power plant suffered the highest risk. Despite the estimation of only potential risk being posed by PAHs in road dust, human exposure to the various environmental matrices, scientific and systematic assessment of carcinogenic risks by PAHs in the total environment warrants further investigations.

Photothermal therapy is a very promising treatment method in the field of cancer therapy. The photothermal nanomaterials in near-infrared region (NIR-I, 750-900 nm) attracts extensive attention in recent years because of the good biological penetration of NIR light. However, the penetration depth is still not enough for solid tumors due to high tissue scattering. The light in the second near-infrared region (NIR-II, 1000-1700 nm) allows deeper tissue penetration, higher upper limit of radiation and greater tissue tolerance than that in the NIR-I, and it shows greater application potential in photothermal conversion. This review summarizes the photothermal properties of Au nanomaterials, two-dimensional materials, metal oxide sulfides and polymers in the NIR-II and their application prospects in photothermal therapy. It will arouse the interest of scientists in the field of cancer treatment as well as nanomedicine.

Gastric cancer (GC) is one of the most common malignancies and has the second highest lethal rate in the world; thus, finding new medicines with high potency and low toxicity is urgent. Cudrania tricuspidata (Carr.) Bur. ex Lavallee (Moraceae) is a traditional medicinal herb that is considered to have antitumour efficacy. We extracted and isolated cudraxanthone L (CXL) from Cudrania tricuspidata and evaluated its anti-cancer efficacy. CXL treatment inhibited angiogenesis of chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) and repressed the cell viability of various human cancer cells, indicating it presented the antitumour potential. Among them, CXL presented the best inhibitory effects on MGC803 cells. In addition, the invasion, migration and clonogenicity were significantly repressed, S phase of the cell cycle was arrested, and apoptosis was induced when MGC803 cells were treated with CXL. The results of RNA sequencing, qRT-PCR and western blotting verified that CXL regulated the MAPK signalling pathway and induced apoptosis by FAS-mediated pathway. The in vivo data revealed that CXL arrested tumour growth without toxic effects and upregulated the protein levels in FAS-mediated pathway in MGC803 gastric cancer-bearing mice. In summary, we demonstrate CXL presents impactful anti-GC efficacy by regulating the MAPK signalling pathway and promoting the FAS-mediated pathway.

PURPOSE: To compare refractive outcomes, higher order aberrations (HOAs), and the changes in contrast sensitivity after wavefront-guided femtosecond laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (WFG LASIK) and optimized small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) for moderate-to-high astigmatism correction. METHODS: This prospective, randomized study included 87 eyes: 40 eyes in the WFG LASIK group and 47 eyes in the SMILE group. Manual cyclotorsion compensation by marking the horizontal axis before SMILE surgery was used for optimized SMILE. Refractive diopter, aberrations, and contrast sensitivity were assessed 3 months postoperatively. The Alpins vector analysis method was used to analyze the astigmatic changes after surgery. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in the corrected distance visual acuity and refraction between the two groups after surgery. The fitted curve of surgically induced astigmatism versus target induced astigmatism was described as y = 0.9905 x + 0.0009 in the WFG LASIK group and y = 0.9672 x + 0.0026 in the SMILE group. The percentage of corneal astigmatism axis change within 5 degrees was statistically significant (chi-square test: 10.632, P = .001). HOAs increased in both the WFG LASIK and SMILE groups after surgery (t = -3.655, P = .001, t = -3.784, P = .001, respectively). However, comparison of the changes of HOAs between both groups was not significant (t = -0.565, P = .575). The improvement in contrast sensitivity in the WFG LASIK group was significantly higher than that in the SMILE group. CONCLUSIONS: WFG LASIK and optimized SMILE can achieve similar outcomes for astigmatism correction. Optimized SMILE with marking could achieve good astigmatism correction, even without an eye tracking system. [J Refract Surg. 2021;37(3):166-173.].

PURPOSE: To compare the visual and refractive outcomes between centration on the corneal vertex and the pupil center in corneal refractive surgery. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted using PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library to identify relevant studies. The primary outcomes were the postoperative spherical equivalent (SE), effectiveness [uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) ≥ 20/20, eyes within ± 0.50 diopter (D) of target refraction], and safety [loss ≥ 2 lines of corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA)]. Higher-order aberrations were considered secondary outcomes. RESULTS: Seven studies describing a total of 1964 eyes were included in this meta-analysis. A statistical significance in postoperative SE was found between the two centration methods for the correction of myopia that favor the CV-centered method (p < 0.001). No significant differences were observed in the proportion of eyes with UDVA ≥ 20/20 or loss ≥ 2 lines of CDVA postoperatively. However, the proportion of eyes within ± 0.50 D was slightly higher (p = 0.02) and the coma aberration was much lower in the corneal vertex-centered method (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Preferable visual and refractive outcomes could be achieved with either centering on the corneal vertex or pupil center in corneal refractive surgery; however, the corneal vertex-centered method has shown partial benefits in some clinical indices. In order to obtain higher quality of clinical evidences, more randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are required in further investigations.

Road dust from coal utilization is a significant source contributing to the generation of pollutants that can affect the health of people residing within close proximity to roadways. In this study, road dust samples were collected from different directions centered around a coal-fired power plant in Huainan. Black carbon (BC), soot, char, organic carbon (OC) and total carbon (TC), as well as the δ13C of samples, were determined. Compared to the reference locations which were distant from the power plant, the research areas surrounding the power plant were featured by significantly higher OC/BC ratio and TC concentration. The OC/BC showed significant difference in urban vs. rural areas, and at different distances from the central power plant, which implied that the source and spread of carbonaceous species was dominantly affected by wind direction and urban/rural area differences. Surface morphology analysis showed that the road dust was mixed with spherical particles similar to fly ash. High-resolution XPS C1s spectrum revealed the existence of metal carbide, metal carbonate, and CF3 in the road dust samples. The speciation of carbon in road dusts was found correlated with sampling directions and urban functional areas. Based on the δ13C and OC/BC, it could be inferred that coal-related substances might be important sources of road dusts.

PURPOSE: To investigate the variations of corneal volume (CV) after small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) and femtosecond laser-assisted laser in situ keratomileusis (FS-LASIK) and analyze the influences of biomechanical properties on the changes of refraction and CV. METHODS: Ninety-seven eyes of 97 patients undergoing SMILE and FS-LASIK were included in this retrospective study. CV was measured with Scheimpflug-based corneal topography at preoperatively and at day 1, week 1, and months 1 and 3 postoperatively. CV measured within 5 mm diameter was defined as central region volume (CV5) and between 5 mm and 10 mm diameter was defined as peripheral region volume (CV5-10). An Ocular Response Analyzer (ORA) was used to assess corneal biomechanical properties including corneal hysteresis (CH) and corneal resistant factor (CRF). The reduction of study parameters (â³) were calculated by subtracting the preoperative value at various time points from the postoperative values. RESULTS: CV had significant reduction after the SMILE and FS-LASIK procedure (P < 0.05). CV5 increased significantly from postoperative day 1 to month 3 (P < 0.001) in SMILE, while both CV5 and CV5-10 increased significantly in FS-LASIK (P < 0.001). The increase in CV5 after SMILE was 0.11 ± 0.16 mm3ï¼which was significantly different from FS-LASIK (0.20 ± 0.13 mm3, P=0.004). In the SMILE group, â³CV5 correlated with â³CRF (r = 0.498, P < 0.001) and â³CH (r = 0.374, P=0.007). In the FS-LASIK group, â³CV5 and â³CRF had a significant correlation (r = 0.363, P=0.012), but not with â³CH. CONCLUSIONS: Dynamic changes in corneal volume were found after SMILE and FS-LASIK surgery. The central region significantly increased after SMILE, while both central and peripheral regions increased following FS-LASIK in the early postoperative period. SMILE was associated with less change in biomechanical properties per unit of reduction in CV compared with FS-LASIK.

Metabolic interaction between cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) and colorectal cancer (CRC) cells plays a major role in CRC progression. However, little is known about lipid alternations in CAFs and how these metabolic reprogramming affect CRC cells metastasis. Here, we uncover CAFs conditioned medium (CM) promote the migration of CRC cells compared with normal fibroblasts CM. CAFs undergo a lipidomic reprogramming, and accumulate more fatty acids and phospholipids. CAFs CM after protein deprivation still increase the CRC cells migration, which suggests small molecular metabolites in CAFs CM are responsible for CRC cells migration. Then, we confirm that CRC cells take up the lipids metabolites that are secreted from CAFs. Fatty acids synthase (FASN), a crucial enzyme in fatty acids synthesis, is significantly increased in CAFs. CAF-induced CRC cell migration is abolished by knockdown of FASN by siRNA or reducing the uptake of fatty acids by CRC cells by sulfo-N-succinimidyloleate sodium in vitro and CD36 monoclonal antibody in vivo. To conclude, our results provide a new insight into the mechanism of CRC metastasis and suggest FASN of CAFs or CD36 of CRC cells may be potential targets for anti-metastasis treatment in the future.

Coal is one of the most important fossil fuels for energy, but it can cause serious polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) pollution to the environment. In this work, the distribution, sources, influencing factors, and risk assessment of PAHs were studied in a soil of typical coal resource city, Huainan, China. The total concentration of 16 PAHs classified by USEPA in 47 soils ranged from 109.94 to 1105.30 ng/g with a mean concentration of 528.06 ng/g. The PAH concentration was higher in soil of this area than most of the agricultural, urban and industrial soils and lower than some coal mine and coal-fired power plant areas in the world. The principal component analysis (PCA) and diagnostic ratios demonstrated that PAHs in soils were mainly from the coal combustion and refined petroleum products. The total organic carbon (TOC, p < 0.01) and black carbon (BC, p < 0.01) can significantly influence PAH inventories in soils, particularly for PAHs with high molecular weight. In addition, the significantly positive correlations between PAHs in feed coal (p < 0.05), fly ash (p < 0.01), particulate matter (PM1-2.5 and PM2.5-10, p < 0.01) and PAHs in soils revealed that the emission sources and deposition processes were also the main factors affecting PAH contents in soils. The estimated values of incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) for children and adults were higher than 10-4 at all sampling sites, suggesting high carcinogenic risks for local residents, and the most important exposure route for PAHs was dermal absorption. These findings are valuable for assessing the health risk of PAHs in soils around typical coal mine and coal-fired power plants and highlight the urgency of taking actions to control and reduce the carcinogenic risks for local residents.
