RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical effectiveness and stability of open suture versus micro-screw anchored disc reduction and fixation in treating disc displacement without reduction in the anterior temporomandibular joint. METHODS: A total of 38 patients (51 sides) with anterior disc displacement without reduction (ADDwR) of the TMJ treated in our hospital from August 2021 to January 2023 were selected, including 19 cases in group A (23 sides) treated with open temporomandibular joint disc reduction and anchorage, and 19 cases in group B (28 sides) treated with temporomandibular joint disc reduction and suture. The Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) data of the two groups before and after operation were compared to evaluate the effective rate of articular disc reduction, the change of articular disc length, The Maximal Interincisal Opening (MIO) and Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) were measured before and after operation. RESULTS: In group A, the MRI effective rate 6 months after disc reduction was 95.65 % (22/23), the disc length gain was 1.74 mm, MIO was 40.32±5.067 mm, and NRS was 0.47±0.697. The MRI effective rate 6 months after disc reduction in group B was 100 % (28/28). The disc length gain was 1.78 mm, MIO was 41.58±3.746 mm, and NRS was 0.00. There was no significant difference between the two groups (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: TMJ disc reduction and suture and open TMJ disc anchorage can effectively reduce the TMJ disc. The TMJ disc stability is high at 6 months after operation, and the pain and mouth opening can be improved, which is worthy of further promotion in clinical practice.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the diagnosis and treatment procedure of synovial chondromatosis (SC) of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). METHODS: Clinical features, imaging features, surgical methods, and prognosis of 7 patients with SC of the TMJ were analyzed. We also reviewed and analyzed surgery-relevant literature included in the Pubmed database in the past decade using the search terms "synovial chondromatosis" and "temporomandibular joint", and found 181 cases. RESULTS: There was no specific difference in the symptoms of SC in the TMJ in different Milgram's stages in our cases and the cases mentioned in the literature. The main symptoms of SC in the TMJ were pain (100%, 7/7; 64.64%, 117/181), limited mouth opening (57.14%, 4/7; 53.59%, 97/181), swelling (14.29%, 1/7; 28.18%, 51/181), crepitus (28.57%, 2/7; 19.34%, 35/181), and clicking (14.29%, 1/7; 9.94%, 18/181) in our cases and cases from literature separately. The imaging features of SC were occupying lesions (including loose bodies or masses) (71.42%, 5/7; 37.57%, 68/181), bone change in condyle or glenoid fossa (1/7, 14.29%; 34.81%, 63/181), effusion (42.86%, 3/7; 20.99%, 38/181), joint space changes (42.86%, 3/7; 11.05%, 20/181) in our cases and cases from literature separately. The surgical procedures seem to depend mainly on the involved structures and the extension of the lesion rather than the Milgram's stage. CONCLUSIONS: The clinical features of SC in the TMJ are nonspecific and easy to be misdiagnosed. MRI is helpful in the diagnosis of SC in the TMJ. The surgical procedures mainly depend on the involved structures and the extension of the lesion.

RESUMO

The present study reports a case of intentional replantation (IR) for a right mandibular second premolar (#45). For the present case, root canal retreatment was first considered after removal of the metal post and core. When the metal post and core could not be removed from #45, micro-apical surgery or intentional tooth replantation was performed. Six-month postoperative evaluation revealed that the right mandibular second premolar had no obvious symptoms of discomfort, and the clinical follow-up revealed uneventful healing and good bone regeneration. The short-term clinical efficacy was acceptable. For cases with root canal treatment failure, when the apical surgical access could not be established due to the adjacent important anatomical structures, IR may be employed as an accepted endodontic treatment procedure. Key Words: Root canal treatment failure, Post-core crown, Root canal retreatment, Intentional replantation.

RESUMO

The repair of articular cartilage defects is still challenging in the fields of orthopedics and maxillofacial surgery due to the avascular structure of articular cartilage and the limited regenerative capacity of mature chondrocytes. To provide viable treatment options, tremendous efforts have been made to develop various chondrogenically-functionalized biomaterials for cartilage tissue engineering. Peptides that are derived from and mimic the functions of chondroconductive cartilage extracellular matrix and chondroinductive growth factors, represent a unique group of bioactive agents for chondrogenic functionalization. Since they can be chemically synthesized, peptides bear better reproducibility, more stable efficacy, higher modifiability and yielding efficiency in comparison with naturally derived biomaterials and recombinant growth factors. In this review, we summarize the current knowledge in the designs of the chondroinductive/chondroconductive peptides, the underlying molecular mechanisms and their-functionalized biomaterials for cartilage tissue engineering. We also systematically compare their in-vitro and in-vivo efficacies in inducing chondrogenesis. Our vision is to stimulate the development of novel peptides and their-functionalized biomaterials for cartilage tissue engineering.

RESUMO

A cross-modal interaction may exist between the perception of saltiness and the pungency elicited by Sichuan pepper oleoresin (Spo). Thirty-one hypersensitive panelists were selected to participate in this study. Spo solutions dissolved in different NaCl concentrations, ranging from 1.25 g/L to 167.9 g/L, were used as the test samples. The rated difference from control, the generalized labeled magnitude scale (gLMS), and the time-intensity (TI) method were used to determine the detection threshold (DT), the recognition threshold (RT), the intensity, and the dynamic perception of pungent sensation. The results revealed that the pungency thresholds increased significantly (p < 0.01) in the solution with a high NaCl (167.9 g/L) concentration. Furthermore, high NaCl solutions suppressed the pungency intensity at all Spo concentrations except for 0.02 g Spo/L in water (p < 0.05). The TI and principal component analysis (PCA) results showed that an increase in the Spo concentration prolonged the duration of the pungency sensation. However, the maximum intensity, the time to reach maximum intensity, the decay time of perception, and the end time of perception of the Spo solutions ranging from 2.13 g/L to 4.69 g/L were significantly reduced at medium (42.95 g/L) and high NaCl concentrations. Since the salty and pungency sensations exhibited by NaCl and Spo are common flavor combinations in food products and dishes, studying the influence of saltiness on the dynamic perception of pungent sensation not only aids the development of oral cleaners during pungency evaluation but also presents significant theoretical and practical value in creating pungent food and cuisine based on consumer preferences.

RESUMO

Antigen-binding fragments (Fabs) are preferred alternatives to antibodies for medical application, whereas their short half-lives limit therapeutic effectiveness. Albumin binding domain (ABD) with high affinity for albumin possesses a great potential in enhancing in vivo performance of biotherapeutics. In this study, to mitigate the poor pharmacokinetics of adalimumab Fab targeting tumor necrosis factor-α (TNFα), an ABD fusion strategy was applied innovatively using GA3, ABD035, ABD094 and ABDCon with high affinities for albumin. The prokaryotic expression, bioactivities and half-lives of those novel Fab-ABD fusions were investigated in vitro and in vivo. All Fab-ABD fusions were successfully purified, and they retained similar TNFα-binding activities with the unmodified Fab control, also presented high affinities for human/mouse serum albumin (HSA/MSA). Additionally, the simultaneous binding of the difunctional Fab-ABD fusions to TNFα and albumin was verified, and ABD fused to Fab neither interfered with Fab-TNFα binding nor impaired the association between Fc fragment of IgG receptor and transporter (FcRn) and albumin. Based on the highest binding affinity for HSA and maximal yield, Fab-ABDCon was selected for further evaluation. Fab-ABDCon showed similar thermostability with the Fab control and robust stability in human and mouse plasma. Most notably, the pharmacokinetics of Fab-ABDCon in mice was significantly improved with a 22-fold longer plasma half-life (28.2 h) compared with that of Fab control (1.31 h), which have contributed to its satisfactory therapeutic efficacy in murine TNFα-induced hepatonecrosis model. Thus, Fab-ABDCon could be a promising long-acting candidate suitable for drug development targeting TNFα-mediated inflammatory disease.

RESUMO

The oral cavity (mouth) has various microbial habitats, including, teeth, gingival sulcus, gingiva, tongue, inner cheek, hard palate, and soft palate. The human oral cavity houses the second most diverse microbiome in the body harboring over 700 bacterial species. The fine-tuned equilibrium of the oral microbiome ecosystem maintains oral health. Oral dysbiosis caused by food habits and poor oral hygiene leads to various oral diseases such as periodontitis, caries, gingivitis, and oral cancer. Recent advances in technology have revealed the correlation between the oral microbiome and systemic diseases such as pulmonary diseases, cardiovascular diseases, rheumatoid arthritis, Alzheimer's disease, and other metabolic diseases. Since the oral cavity directly connects with the upper respiratory tract, the oral microbiome has easier access to the respiratory system compared to other organ systems. Direct aspiration of oral microflora in the respiratory system and oral dysbiosis-induced host immune reaction and inflammation are mainly responsible for various pulmonary complications. Numbers of literature have reported the correlation between oral diseases and pulmonary diseases, suggesting the possible role of the oral microbiome in respiratory diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, pneumonia, lung cancer, etc. This paper reviews the current evidence in establishing a link between the oral microbiome and pulmonary diseases. We also discuss future research directions focusing on the oral microbiome to unravel novel therapeutic approaches that could prevent or treat the various pulmonary complications.

RESUMO

Human Interleukin 2 (IL-2) has already achieved impressive results as a therapeutic agent for cancer and autoimmune diseases. However, one of the limitations associated with the clinical application of IL-2 is its short half-life owing to rapid clearance by the kidneys. Modification with fatty acids, as an albumin noncovalent ligand with the advantage of deep penetration into tissues and high activity-to-mass ratio, is a commonly used approach to improve the half-life of native peptides and proteins. In this investigation, we attempted to extend the half-life of IL-2 through conjugation with a fatty acid using sortase A (srtA). We initially designed and optimized three IL-2 analogues with different peptide linkers between the C-terminus of IL-2 and srtA recognition sequence (LPETG). Among these, analogue A3 was validated as the optimal IL-2 analogue for further modification. Next, six fatty acid moieties with the same fatty acid and different hydrophilic spacers were conjugated to A3 through srtA. The six bioconjugates generated were screened for in vitro biological activity, among which bioconjugate B6 was identified as near-optimal to IL-2. Additionally, B6 could effectively bind albumin through the conjugated fatty acid, which contributed to a significant improvement in its pharmacokinetic properties in vivo. In summary, we have developed a novel IL-2 bioconjugate, B6, modified with fatty acids using srtA, which may effectively serve as a new-generation long-acting IL-2 immunotherapeutic agent.

RESUMO

Health concerns related to the intake of salt have necessitated the investigation into NaCl reduction by examining the cross-modal interaction between the perception of saltiness and pungency elicited by Sichuan pepper oleoresin (Spo). The category scale and the generalized Labeled Magnitude Scale (gLMS) were used to determine the degree to which Spo enhanced the perception of saltiness in the NaCl model solution. Sixty-eight participants were divided into the hyposensitive, semi-sensitive, and hypersensitive groups according to individual exponent. The power functions of saltiness under different pungency carriers were obtained. The level of enhancement varied between the different sensitivity groups and pungency carriers. In the hypersensitive group, the low and strong pungency carriers effectively enhanced the perception of saltiness at low to moderate, and moderate to strong NaCl solutions, respectively. In the semi-sensitive group, low and moderate pungency carriers induced additive effect in the perception of saltiness at full and moderately strong NaCl solutions, respectively. However, the additive effect was inadequate in the hypo-sensitive group. Therefore, the low pungency solution was more feasible for enhancing in the perception of saltiness, while the maximum NaCl reduction percentages corresponded to the hypersensitive and semi-sensitive groups at 38.61% and 39.06%, respectively. This research not only provided insight into the effect of pungency on the perception of saltiness as it related to individual sensitivity, but also presented valuable information regarding flavor when developing food with reduced salt content.

RESUMO

Dicalcium silicate microparticle (C2S)-based biomaterials have a potential for bone and dental tissue regenerative applications. The C2S-mediated transcriptome level mechanism in mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) during bone-defect healing has not been investigated yet. In this study, we elucidated the differential expression pattern of messenger RNAs (mRNAs) and circular RNAs (circRNAs) in C2S-treated MSCs and their involvement in the osteogenesis process. C2S robustly enhanced the osteogenic differentiation of MSCs and cranial bone defect healing. C2S-treatment modulated the differential expression of mRNAs and circRNAs in MSCs. Differentially expressed circRNAs and mRNAs were involved in competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA-interaction networks). These ceRNA-interaction networks regulated the signaling pathways associated with osteogenesis, e.g., Wnt, PI3K-Akt, MAPK, and JAK/STAT signaling. C2S-treatment upregulated the expression of circ_1983, Gas7, and Runx2 in BMSCs. RNase R and luciferase activity assay confirmed the stability and miR-6931 sponging property of circ_1983, respectively. Knockdown of circ_1983 enhanced miR-6931 expression but inhibited Gas7 and Runx2 expression and osteogenic differentiation in C2S-treated MSCs. In conclusion, for the first time, we report the role of cicr_1983-miR-6931-Gas7 ceRNA-interaction in C2S-induced osteogenic differentiation of MSCs and bone defect healing. This study opens a new research stream "the role of circRNAs-mediated ceRNA-interaction in biomaterials and stem cell-based bone tissue engineering".

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To get and analyze the metric data of zygomatic region for the plasty of zygoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 108 dry skulls in Chinese Han population were randomly collected and measured. The metrical data were divided into 4 parts, including the relative position of contour height of zygomatic bone, the relative prominence of zygomatic bone, the relative prominence of zygomatic arch, and the angle of the zygomatic bone and arch. RESULTS: The measurements in the 4 parts showed significantly difference between male and female (P < 0.05). For relative position of contour height of zygomatic bone group, the data of male is significantly bigger than female (P < 0.05). For relative prominence of zygomatic bone/zygomatic arch group, zygoma/zygomatic arch of male significantly protruded more than female (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The location of male zygoma is more protruding than female. The female zygoma is squarer than male and marginal process is helpful in zygomatic plasty. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: These studies show and analyze the metric data of zygomatic region in Chinese Han population for the plasty of zygoma. These different characters between males and females could be helpful in zygomatic plasty of Chinese Han population based on this research.

RESUMO

Head and neck cancer (HNC) is the sixth most common cancer worldwide. Over the last decade, an enormous amount of well-annotated gene and drug data has accumulated for HNC. However, a comprehensive repository is not yet available. Here, we constructed the Head and Neck Cancer Database (HNCDB: http://hncdb.cancerbio.info) using text mining followed by manual curation of the literature to collect reliable information on the HNC-related genes and drugs. The high-throughput gene expression data for HNC were also integrated into HNCDB. HNCDB includes the following three separate but closely related components: "HNC GENE," "Connectivity Map," and "ANALYSIS." The "HNC GENE" component contains comprehensive information for the 1,173 HNC-related genes manually curated from 2,564 publications. The "Connectivity Map" includes information on the potential connections between the 176 drugs manually curated from 2,032 publications and the 1,173 HNC-related genes. The "ANALYSIS" component allows users to conduct correlation, differential expression, and survival analyses in the 2,403 samples from 78 HNC gene expression datasets. Taken together, we believe that HNCDB will be of significant benefit for the HNC community and promote further advances for precision medicine research on HNC.

RESUMO

As an abundant post-translational modification, reversible phosphorylation is critical for the dynamic regulation of various biological processes. prkC, a critical serine/threonine-protein kinase in bacteria, plays important roles in regulation of signaling transduction. Identification of prkC-specific phosphorylation sites is fundamental for understanding the molecular mechanism of phosphorylation-mediated signaling. However, experimental identification of substrates for prkC is time-consuming and labor-intensive, and computational methods for kinase-specific phosphorylation prediction in bacteria have yet to be developed. In this study, we manually curated the experimentally identified substrates and phosphorylation sites of prkC from the published literature. The analyses of the sequence preferences showed that the substrate recognition pattern for prkC might be miscellaneous, and a complex strategy should be employed to predict potential prkC-specific phosphorylation sites. To develop the predictor, the amino acid location feature extraction method and the support vector machine algorithm were employed, and the methods achieved promising performance. Through 10-fold cross validation, the predictor reached a sensitivity of 91.67% at the specificity of 95.12%. Then, we developed freely accessible software, which is provided at http://free.cancerbio.info/prkc/. Based on the predictor, hundreds of potential prkC-specific phosphorylation sites were annotated based on the known bacterial phosphorylation sites. prkC-PSP was the first predictor for prkC-specific phosphorylation sites, and its prediction performance was promising. We anticipated that these analyses and the predictor could be helpful for further studies of prkC-mediated phosphorylation.

RESUMO

Oxidative low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) is a risk factor for atherosclerosis. Ox-LDL leads to endothelial injury in the initial stage of atherosclerosis. In this study, we investigated the role of ox-LDL in endothelial injury and macrophage recruitment. We demonstrated that ox-LDL promoted a dose-dependent phosphorylation of caveolin-1 in human umbilical vein endothelial cells. Phosphorylated caveolin-1 increased ox-LDL uptake. Intracellular accumulation of ox-LDL induced NF-κB p65 phosphorylation, promoted HMGB1 translocation from nucleus to cytoplasm and cytochrome C release from mitochondria to cytoplasm, and activated caspase 3, resulting in cell apoptosis. NF-κB activation also facilitated cavolin-1 phosphorylation and HMGB1 expression. In addition, caveolin-1 phosphorylation favored HMGB1 release and nuclear translocation of EGR1. Nuclear translocation of EGR1 contributed to cytoplasmic translocation of HMGB1. The extracellular HMGB1 induced the migration of PMBC-derived macrophages toward HUVECs in a TLR4-dependent manner. Our results suggested that ox-LDL promoted HUVECs apoptosis and macrophage recruitment by regulating caveolin-1 phosphorylation.

RESUMO

Although long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been emerging as critical regulators in various tissues and biological processes, little is known about their expression and regulation during the osteogenic differentiation of periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs) in inflammatory microenvironment. In this study, we have identified 63 lncRNAs that are not annotated in previous database. These novel lncRNAs were not randomly located in the genome but preferentially located near protein-coding genes related to particular functions and diseases, such as stem cell maintenance and differentiation, development disorders and inflammatory diseases. Moreover, we have identified 650 differentially expressed lncRNAs among different subsets of PDLSCs. Pathway enrichment analysis for neighboring protein-coding genes of these differentially expressed lncRNAs revealed stem cell differentiation related functions. Many of these differentially expressed lncRNAs function as competing endogenous RNAs that regulate protein-coding transcripts through competing shared miRNAs.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) is a major component of hyperlipidemia and contributes to atherosclerosis. Endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) play an important role in preventing atherosclerosis and notably decreased in hyperlipidemia. Ox-LDL and ox-LDL-related reactive oxygen species (ROS) have deleterious effects on EPCs. Probucol as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory drug reduces ROS production. The present study was to determine if probucol could protect EPCs from ox-LDL in vivo and to investigate the potential mechanisms. METHODS: ox-LDL was injected into male C57BL/6 mice for 3 days with or without probucol treatment with PBS as control. Bone marrow (BM) fluid, serum, circulating mononuclear cells (MNCs) and EPCs were collected for analysis. RESULTS: the increased extracellular ROS in BM, serum and blood intracellular ROS production in the mice with ox-LDL treatment in association with a significant reduction of circulating MNCs and EPCs were restored with Probucol treatment. A significant increase in the serum ox-LDL and C-reactive protein and decrease in superoxide dismutase and circulating MNCs and EPCs were observed in hyperlipidemic patients that were effectively reversed with probucol treatment. CONCLUSION: these data suggested that probucol could protect EPCs from ox-LDL through inhibition of ROS production in vivo.

RESUMO

Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) is non-atherogenic, while oxidized LDL (ox-LDL) is critical to atherosclerosis. N-acetylcysteine (NAC) has anti-atherosclerotic effect with largely unknown mechanisms. The present study aimed to determine if NAC could attenuate in vivo LDL oxidation and inhibit atherosclerosis. A single dose of human native LDL was injected intravenously into male C57BL/6 mice with and without NAC treatment. Serum human ox-LDL was detected 30 min after injection, reached the peak in 3 hours, and became undetectable in 12 hours. NAC treatment significantly reduced serum ox-LDL level without detectable serum ox-LDL 6 hours after LDL injection. No difference in ox-LDL clearance was observed in NAC-treated animals. NAC treatment also significantly decreased serum ox-LDL level in patients with coronary artery diseases and hyperlipidemia without effect on LDL level. Intracellular and extracellular reactive oxidative species (ROS) production was significantly increased in the animals treated with native LDL, or ox-LDL and in hyperlipidemic LDL receptor knockout (LDLR(-/-)) mice that was effectively prevented with NAC treatment. NAC also significantly reduced atherosclerotic plaque formation in hyperlipidemic LDLR(-/-) mice. NAC attenuated in vivo oxidation of native LDL and ROS formation from ox-LDL associated with decreased atherosclerotic plaque formation in hyperlipidemia.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: A series of retrospectively recorded patients with cleft lip and palate was uniquely investigated to demonstrate and analyze the complications after cleft repairing operations in a selected Chinese population. MATERIAL AND METHODS: From January 2005 to January 2012, a selected group of 2100 patients with cleft lip and/or palate who have complete records were chosen from a large sample in the units. Complete data were retrieved, including sex, age, clinical classification, surgical modality, complications, and follow-up results. The complications were classified into 2 categories: early and long-term complications. After surgery, most patients with cleft lip remained in the hospital for 7 days and cleft palate repairs for 10 days. A standard regimen of antibiotics was administered for 3 to 5 days clinically. RESULTS: Of the 2100 patients, there were 1360 males and 760 females who had congenital cleft deformity with complete clinical records in the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery. The age distribution was as follows: 1600 patients in the group of 3 months to 2 years, 320 patients in the group of 2 to 10 years, 130 patients in the group of 11 to 19 years, and 50 patients in the group of older than 20 years. As to the treatment modality, cleft lips were repaired by rotation advancement method with various minor modifications or Tennison modality. The cleft palates were closed using the von Langenbeck, Veau/Wardill/Kilner, or Furlow technique. The overall complication rate was 16.8% of the patients. Of the early complications, there were 6 cases of asphyxia, 17 cases of pyrexia, 5 cases of edema of the respiratory tract, 8 cases of upper respiratory tract infection, 6 cases of bronchiolitis, 7 cases of pneumonia, 9 cases of diarrhea and vomiting, 6 cases of hemorrhage, 5 patients of odontoptosis, 11 cases of erosion of the corner of mouth, 5 cases of drowsiness, 11 cases of incision dehiscence, 9 cases of wound infection, 6 cases of palatal dehiscence/fistula, 3 cases of nostril floor breakdown, 7 cases of conjunctivitis, as well as 3 cases of mortality. The long-term complications included 30 cases of secondary lip/nasal deformity, 10 cases of dehiscence of lip, 14 cases of palatal fistula/decencies, 18 cases of hearing problem/otitis media, 21 cases of poor ventilation/snoring, 66 cases of velopharyngeal incompetence, and 58 cases of voice disorder. CONCLUSIONS: Complications after cleft surgery are unavoidable clinically. More attention should be paid to the etiologic factors to minimize the prevalence of complications. Mortality can be found in patients with cleft, which is a deadly complication. Problems of respiratory tract and hemorrhage should be emphasized and treated seriously.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to retrospectively explore the utilization of coralline hydroxyapatite in maxillary sinus augmentation. METHOD: One hundred and eighteen cases of sinus lift with coralline hydroxyapatite (CHA) were included in this study. In detail, simultaneous implantation was conducted in 78 patients (174 implants) and delayed implantation was done in 40 cases (82 implants) around 6 months after bone transplantation. The clinical features and X-ray radiographs after operation were analyzed to evaluate osseointegration procedures according to a planned medical follow-up. In the delayed group, around 6 months, a bone biopsy was taken just during implant placement in order to evaluate the new formed bone from a histological and histomorphometrical point of view. A further 6 months later, abutment connection was performed, and the patients received prosthetic restoration of the missing teeth. RESULT: Clinically, the incisions healed well. No abnormal reactions were found during follow-up period. All the 174 simultaneous implants were successful after 1-5 years of medical review; Out of 82 delayed implants, 3 were found to be loose. Histologically, all the specimens showed signs of active remodeling, and all the tissues had a large amount of osteocyte at sixth month after sinus augmentation. New bone formed dramatically. Radiologically, the density of CHA gradually reduced since the beginning of the third month, and CHA may be completely resolved at about fifth year. CONCLUSION: CHA is proven an ideal bone graft material for its reliable clinical results and favorable histocompatibility in the treatment of sinus atrophy or other kinds of insufficient bone volume in this region. Moreover, CHA's signal application can achieve desired clinical effect. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This study shows the clinic application of CHA in maxillary sinus augmentation. Compared with popular mixture of autogenous bone and grafting materials, our results show CHA's signal application can achieve ideal osseointegration interface and satisfying clinic effect.

RESUMO

Upconversion luminescence (UCL) nanoparticles hold great promise as potential photosensitizer carries for photodynamic therapy (PDT). In this study, one-step self-assembly fabrication of ZnPc/NaGdF4:Yb,Er nanoclusters was developed using an amphiphilic PMAO-PEG to encapsulate simultaneously photosensitizer zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPc) and NaGdF4:Yb,Er nanocrystals via polymer solidification, which has provided a facile and versatile strategy for the design of a drug carrier platform. The ZnPc/NaGdF4:Yb,Er nanoclusters possessed good dispersibility and excellent UCL. Upon 980 nm light irradiation, the singlet oxygen generated by ZnPc was examined owing to the occurrence of FRET from the NaGdF4:Yb,Er nanocrystals to the ZnPc molecules. Confocal imaging and cell viability (about 50%) performed on HeLa cells exhibited the cell internalization and the remarkable PDT effects of the ZnPc/NaGdF4:Yb,Er nanoclusters. These results demonstrate that the nanoclusters as a drug carrier nanoplatform would be a promising theranostic strategy for the diagnosis and therapy of cancers.
