BACKGROUND: Compared to adult scoliosis, correcting scoliosis in children often presents greater challenges. This is attributed to two key factors. Firstly, it involves accounting for the growth potential of children. Secondly, the thinner pedicles in children can complicate screw insertion, particularly when dealing with existing deformities. The utilization of intraoperative navigation technology offers a modest improvement in the precision of screw placement but does come with the drawback of increased radiation exposure. The aim of this study is to investigate and assess the accuracy of manually inserting pedicle screws in the thoracic and lumbar spine to rectify deformities in children with early-onset congenital scoliosis. METHODS: In this retrospective study, 26 hospitalized patients diagnosed with early-onset congenital scoliosis between December 2014 and December 2019 were selected. The cohort comprised 16 boys and 10 girls, aged between 2 and 10 years, with an average age of 4.68 ± 2.42 years. Pedicle screw fixation was applied in the segment spanning from T1 to L5. Pedicle screws were inserted manually, guided by the positioning of the C-arm and anatomical markers. The assessment of pedicle screw placement was based on the distance of penetration into the medial, lateral, or anterior bone cortex of the vertebral body, including the pedicle, categorized into three grades: Grade 1 (placement <2 mm), Grade 2 (placement between 2-4 mm), and Grade 3 (placement >4 mm). Grade 1 indicates accurate pedicle screw placement, while Grades 2 and 3 signify abnormal pedicle screw placement. Complications related to pedicle screw insertion were also recorded, both during and after the surgical procedure. RESULTS: A total of 173 pedicle screws were inserted in this study, with an average of 6.65 screws per patient. Accurate screw placement was achieved in 143 cases (82.7%), while 30 pedicle screws were found to be abnormal. Among the abnormal screws, 24 were categorized as Grade 2 (13.9%), and 6 as Grade 3 (3.5%). Grade 2 abnormalities were distributed across 20 thoracic vertebrae and 4 lumbar vertebrae, while Grade 3 abnormalities affected 5 thoracic vertebrae and 1 lumbar vertebra. When comparing the lumbar and thoracic vertebral regions, a significant difference in the rate of abnormal screw placement was observed (χ2 = 5.801, p < 0.05). The rate of abnormal screw placement was higher in the thoracic vertebral region with abnormal vertebral bodies than in the lumbar vertebral regions. Furthermore, a statistically significant difference in the rate of abnormal screw placement was found between the concave and convex sides (χ2 = 23.047, p < 0.05). The concave side of the abnormal vertebral body had a higher rate of abnormal screw placement (55.6%, 15/27) compared to the convex side (20.1%, 7/34), and this difference was statistically significant (p < 0.05). Throughout the intraoperative and postoperative follow-up period, spanning from 12 to 56 months, only one patient experienced issues with wound healing, and no complications related to pedicle screw placement occurred, such as hemopneumothorax, pedicle fracture, nerve root injury, aortic injury, screw loosening, pullout or breakage, or spinal cord injury. CONCLUSIONS: In children under 10 years of age with early-onset congenital scoliosis, the freehand placement of thoracic and lumbar pedicle screws demonstrates a high level of accuracy. Moreover, complications associated with pedicle screw insertion are infrequent following surgery. It is advisable to exercise caution when placing pedicle screws in thoracic vertebral bodies and morphologically abnormal vertebral bodies, with particular attention to the concave side when screw placement is required in these regions.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the functional and aesthetic results of a new modified Bilhaut-Cloquet procedure for the treatment of Wassel type III-IV thumb polydactyly. METHODS: Thirteen patients with Wassel type III-IV thumb polydactyly who visited the Department of Orthopedics of Hebei Provincial Children's Hospital from 2019 to 2022 were selected. The surgical procedure involved a modified Bilhaut-Cloquet surgery, where two-thirds of the distal part of the dominant finger was retained as the p body of the reconstructed thumb. The triangular bone block of the ablated distal thumb that did not contain the epiphysis and articular cartilage was sutured and fixed, and the neurovascular flap of the ablated distal thumb was used as an augmenting segment of the reconstructed thumb, with the nail bed and nail matrix exquisitely sutured. The evaluation performed according to the Japanese Society for Surgery of the Hand (JSSH) system. RESULTS: All 13 children showed bone healing, no wound infection, nonunion, or deformity healing. None of the children showed a significant reduction in the active and passive mobility of the thumb postoperatively compared with preoperatively. Postoperative evaluation was performed based on the JSSH score, with a mean of 17.15 points (14-19 points), with 11 children rated as excellent and two as good. No severe nail ridges, nail gaps, or nail split deformities of the thumb were observed postoperatively. Postoperative metacarpophalangeal and interphalangeal joint movements were not reduced compared with preoperative movements. All parents were satisfied with the appearance and function of the reconstructed thumb. CONCLUSION: The modified Bilhaut-Cloquet procedure designed in this study was satisfactory for Wassel type III-IV thumb polydactyly without affecting the stability of the interphalangeal joints and preserving joint mobility. The postoperative thumb has a comparable circumference and nail width and was cosmetically and functionally satisfactory, especially for the asymmetric two thumbs, which achieved favorable results.

Context: Fractures are traumatic events, with psychological effects that can have a negative impact on children hospitalized with fractures. They can seriously affect children's physical rehabilitation and quality of life and even produce psychological disorders The OH card is a metaphorical card that allows access to an individual's inner world and can have a positive effect in psychotherapy. Objective: The study intended to investigate the use of OH Cards during psychological interventions with children with fractures and to provide a methodological reference for the use of OH Cards in therapy. Design: The research team performed a randomized controlled study. Setting: The study took place in the Department of Trauma Surgery at Children's Hospital of Hebei Province in Shijiazhuang, China. Participants: Participants were 74 children with fractures who had been admitted to the hospital between September 2020 and November 2021. Intervention: The research team randomly divided participants into two groups using a random number table: (1) 37 in the intervention group, who received a conventional nursing intervention and also an OH-card intervention, and (2) 37 in the control group, who received conventional nursing interventions only. Outcome Measures: At baseline and postintervention, the research team: (1) measured the participants' posttraumatic growth scores, using the children's version of the Post-Traumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI); (2) assessed their coping styles, using the Medical Coping Modes Questionnaire (MCMQ); (3) determined the existence of any stress disorders, using the Child Stress Disorder Checklist (CSDC); (4) evaluated their mental statuses using the Depression Self-Rating Scale (DSRSC) and the Screen for Child Anxiety-related Emotional Disorders (SCARED); and (5) measured participants' Fracture Knowledge Questionnaire scores. Results: At baseline, no significant differences existed between the groups for any outcome measure at baseline. Postintervention, the intervention group's scores: (1) on the PTGI, were significantly higher for mental change, appreciate life, individual force, new possibilities and personal relation than those of the control group; (2) on the MCMQ, were significantly higher for facing and significantly lower for avoidance and yield than those of the control group; (3) on the CSDC, were significantly lower for trauma incidents and acute response than the control group did; (4) on the DSRSC were significantly lower and on SCARED were significantly higher than those of the control group; and (5) on the Fracture Knowledge Questionnaire were significantly higher than those of the control group. Conclusions: OH Cards can increase the posttraumatic growth scores of children with fractures, improve their coping styles, reduce stress disorders, decrease depression and improve their psychological state, increase their knowledge about fractures, and promote their recovery.

Gambogic acid (GA) has been observed to effectively impede the progression of numerous types of cancers. In this study, we investigated the effects of miR-1275 and Secreted Protein Acidic and Cysteine Rich (SPARC) on GA in gastric cancer (GC). miR-1275 and SPARC expression were determined in GC cell lines and tissues using reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). The correlation between miR-1275 and SPARC expression was ascertained using Pearson's correlation coefficient. Cell proliferation was assessed using the cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) assay. The Transwell assay was conducted to examine cell migration. A dual-luciferase reporter assay was used to verify the regulatory relationship between miR-1275 and SPARC. The levels of SPARC, Bcl-2, and Bax proteins were estimated using western blotting. To verify the effects of GA on the growth of GC cells in vivo, a tumorigenesis experiment was performed in nude mice. GA suppressed GC cell viability and migration, facilitated apoptosis, and inhibited tumor growth in vivo and in vitro. Low levels of miR-1275 been observed in GC cell lines and tissues. GA-treated GC cells manifested high miR-1275 levels. In functional experiments, miR-1275 enhanced the influence of GA on cell apoptosis, migration, and proliferation. Furthermore, GA treatment suppressed SPARC upregulation in GC cell lines and tissues. Pearson's correlation coefficient revealed that miR-1275 expression negatively correlated with SPARC expression. Mechanistically, miR-1275 promoted growth inhibition in GA-treated GC cells by targeting SPARC. Our study indicates that miR-1275 enhances the suppressive effect of GA on GC progression by inhibiting SPARC expression. Through this study, we contribute to the knowledge of a new mechanism by which GA suppresses GC progression.

In this study, high-throughput gene amplicon sequencing was used to investigate the effects of 6 treatments [2 levels of hemp seed oil (HSO) × 3 levels of cysteamine (CS)] on bacterial and fungal communities in the rumen of 30 crossbred dairy buffalo. Our results indicate that the total numbers of bacterial and fungal taxa were unaffected regardless of diet (p > 0.05), while the total number of archaea was affected (p < 0.05) by the interaction of HSO and CS. Compared with control treatment, microbial composition of archaea was strongly influenced by CS (p < 0.05), while the addition of HSO, CS or both had a weak effect on fungus and bacteria. In addition, there was a significant increase in the lactic acid content with the addition of HSO, and the addition of CS to the feed caused a significant decrease in the ratio of acetic acid to propionic acid, compared with control treatment (p < 0.05). Correlation analysis showed that Acetobacter was significantly positively correlated with the genera Pichia, Klebsiella and Acinetobacter. pH was found to have a significant effect on the methanogens, and total volatile fatty acids (VFA) had a strong correlation with Butyrivibrio. The strong influence of CS on some methanogens shows that it may have potential in the development of methane reduction interventions.

Background: A meta-analysis was performed to evaluate the effect of smartphone interventions on the anxiety of the pediatric subjects at induction on the day of surgery compared to oral midazolam or standard care as control. Methods: A systematic literature search up to June 2021 was performed and nine studies selected 785 pediatric subjects on the day of surgery at the start of the study; 390 of them were using smartphone interventions, 192 were control, and 203 were using oral midazolam. They were reporting relationships between the effects of smartphone interventions on the anxiety of the pediatric subjects at induction on the day of surgery compared to oral midazolam or control. The mean difference (MD) with its 95% CIs was calculated to assess the effect of smartphone interventions on the anxiety of the pediatric subjects at induction on the day of surgery compared to oral midazolam or control using the continuous method with a fixed or a random-effects model. Results: Smartphone interventions in pediatric subjects were significantly related to lower anxiety at induction on the day of surgery (MD, -19.74; 95% CI, -29.87 to -9.61, p < 0.001) compared to control and significantly related to lower anxiety at induction on the day of surgery (MD, -7.81; 95% CI, -14.49 to -1.14, p = 0.02) compared to oral midazolam. Conclusion: Smartphone interventions in pediatric subjects on the day of surgery may have lower anxiety at induction compared to control and oral midazolam. Further studies are needed to confirm these findings.

BACKGROUNDS: C2H2-type zinc finger protein (ZFPs) form a relatively large family of transcriptional regulators in plants, and play many roles in plant growth, development, and stress response. However, the comprehensive analysis of C2H2 ZFPs in cucumber (CsZFPs) and their regulation function in cucumber are still lacking. RESULTS: In the current study, the whole genome identification and characterization of CsZFPs, including the gene structure, genome localization, phylogenetic relationship, and gene expression were performed. Functional analysis of 4 selected genes by transient transformation were also conducted. A total of 129 full-length CsZFPs were identified, which could be classified into four groups according to the phylogenetic analysis. The 129 CsZFPs unequally distributed on 7 chromosomes. Promoter cis-element analysis showed that the CsZFPs might involve in the regulation of phytohormone and/or abiotic stress response, and 93 CsZFPs were predicted to be targeted by one to 20 miRNAs. Moreover, the subcellular localization analysis indicated that 10 tested CsZFPs located in the nucleus and the transcriptome profiling analysis of CsZFPs demonstrated that these genes are involved in root and floral development, pollination and fruit spine. Furthermore, the transient overexpression of Csa1G085390 and Csa7G071440 into Nicotiana benthamiana plants revealed that they could decrease and induce leave necrosis in response to pathogen attack, respectively, and they could enhance salt and drought stresses through the initial induction of H2O2. In addition, Csa4G642460 and Csa6G303740 could induce cell death after 5 days transformation. CONCLUSIONS: The identification and function analysis of CsZFPs demonstrated that some key individual CsZFPs might play essential roles in response to biotic and abiotic stresses. These results could lay the foundation for understanding the role of CsZFPs in cucumber development for future genetic engineering studies.

BACKGROUND: Aquaporin (AQP) proteins comprise a group of membrane intrinsic proteins (MIPs) that are responsible for transporting water and other small molecules, which is crucial for plant survival under stress conditions including salt stress. Despite the vital role of AQPs, little is known about them in cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.). RESULTS: In this study, we identified 39 aquaporin-encoding genes in cucumber that were separated by phylogenetic analysis into five sub-families (PIP, TIP, NIP, SIP, and XIP). Their substrate specificity was then assessed based on key amino acid residues such as the aromatic/Arginine (ar/R) selectivity filter, Froger's positions, and specificity-determining positions. The putative cis-regulatory motifs available in the promoter region of each AQP gene were analyzed and results revealed that their promoter regions contain many abiotic related cis-regulatory elements. Furthermore, analysis of previously released RNA-seq data revealed tissue- and treatment-specific expression patterns of cucumber AQP genes (CsAQPs). Three aquaporins (CsTIP1;1, CsPIP2;4, and CsPIP1;2) were the most transcript abundance genes, with CsTIP1;1 showing the highest expression levels among all aquaporins. Subcellular localization analysis in Nicotiana benthamiana epidermal cells revealed the diverse and broad array of sub-cellular localizations of CsAQPs. We then performed RNA-seq to identify the expression pattern of CsAQPs under salt stress and found a general decreased expression level of root CsAQPs. Moreover, qRT-PCR revealed rapid changes in the expression levels of CsAQPs in response to diverse abiotic stresses including salt, polyethylene glycol (PEG)-6000, heat, and chilling stresses. Additionally, transient expression of AQPs in N. benthamiana increased leaf water loss rate, suggesting their potential roles in the regulation of plant water status under stress conditions. CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicated that CsAQPs play important roles in response to salt stress. The genome-wide identification and primary function characterization of cucumber aquaporins provides insight to elucidate the complexity of the AQP gene family and their biological functions in cucumber.

PURPOSE: A surgical procedure to minimize the incidence of inferior alveolar nerve injury (IANI) in deeply impacted mandibular third molars (IMTMs) has been proposed. Our study compared the near-term outcomes between coronectomy and traditional extraction of IMTMs and evaluated the long-term complications after coronectomy using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). PATIENTS AND METHODS: A prospective study was performed of patients with IMTMs at high-risk of IANI using radiographic examination and CBCT. The patients were divided into 2 groups: a coronectomy group and an extraction group. The short-term outcomes, including IANI and other conditions, such as bleeding, pain, and swelling, were assessed in both groups 1 week after surgery. The coronectomy patients were evaluated at 3, 6, 12, and 36 months after the procedure. The primary long-term complications assessed included root migration, secondary included inflammation, socket healing, and eruption. Relevant factors affecting the outcomes (ie, age, gender, root morphology, impacted depth, impacted angle) were also analyzed. The data were analyzed using SPSS Statistics, version 20.0 (IBM Corp, Armonk, NY). RESULTS: A total of 110 IMTMs (55 in the coronectomy group and 55 in the extraction group) in 92 patients (49 men and 43 women) were included in CBCT assessment. IANI was found in 6 patients in the extraction group and no patient in the coronectomy group (P < .05). After 6 months, 2 patients still presented with light numbness. After coronectomy, the roots had migrated quickly during the initial 6 months and had become stable 1 year after surgery; 90.9% of the roots had migrated away from the mandibular nerve canal at 6 months postoperatively. No infection had occurred within the 3-year follow-up period. CONCLUSIONS: Coronectomy should be considered superior to traditional extraction in the management of the risk of IANI, with few additional complications occurring during follow-up. It could be used as a useful and safe clinical treatment of IMTMs with a high risk of IANI.

INTRODUCTION: Orthognathic surgery accelerates orthodontic tooth movement, and tooth movement accelerates with demineralized bone and accelerated bone remodeling. The purpose of this study was to ascertain whether orthognathic surgery induces accelerated bone remodeling. The research design included a human model and an animal model. METHODS: The levels of serum tartrate resistant acid phosphatase-5b (TRAP) and bone alkaline phosphatase (BALP) were measured in 15 patients after sagittal split ramus osteotomy. For the animal study, 18 rabbits were divided into 6 groups: a control group and 5 surgery groups. The rabbits in the surgery groups had osteotomies in the molar regions of the mandible. Changes in bone mass of the anterior mandibles were examined by microcomputed tomography, and changes in osteoblast and osteoclast numbers were analyzed by real-time polymerase chain reaction, hematoxylin and eosin staining, TRAP staining, and alkaline phosphatase staining. RESULTS: In the 15 patients, TRAP-5b increased from 1 to 8 weeks postoperatively, and BALP increased significantly in 2 weeks postoperatively. In the rabbits, the levels of mRNA expression of TRAP were increased at 3 weeks, and matrix metalloproteinase 9 was increased at 4 and 8 weeks, whereas mRNA expression of BALP and bone morphogenetic protein 2 were increased at 4 weeks. Bone loss was detected from 1 week postoperatively and reached the maximum at 3 weeks; and bone mass and mechanical structure did not recoverer to preoperative levels until 8 weeks postoperatively. CONCLUSIONS: These findings show active bone remodeling induced by osteotomy.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Evidence suggests that IL-6 affects bone mass by modulating osteocyte communication towards osteoclasts. However, the mechanism by which IL-6 enhances osteocyte-mediated osteoclastogenesis is unclear. We aimed to investigate the inflammatory factors in serum after orthodontic surgery and their relationship between osteocytes and osteoclasts. METHODS: Serum was obtained from 10 orthognathic surgery patients, and inflammatory factors were detected by ELISA. We treated the osteocyte-like cell line MLO-Y4 with recombinant mouse IL-6 and IL-6 receptor (IL-6R), and used quantitative RT-PCR and Western blotting to explore Receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand (RANKL) expression at both the mRNA and protein level. MLO-Y4 cells were co-cultured with osteoclast precursor cells, and the formation of osteoclasts was detected by tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) staining. To explore the role of JAK2 in the osteocyte-mediated osteoclastogenesis, AG490, a JAK2 inhibitor, was used to inhibit the JAK2-STAT3 pathway in osteocytes. RESULTS: In our study, we found that IL-6 and RANKL were stimulated in serum 3-7 days after orthognathic surgery. Therefore, IL-6 and IL-6 receptor enhanced the expression of RANKL at both the mRNA and protein level in MLO-Y4. Furthermore, when MLO-Y4 cells were co-cultured with osteoclast precursor cells, it significantly stimulated osteoclastogenesis. Our study indicated that osteocytes could promote osteoclastic differentiation and the formation of TRAP-positive multinucleated cells after stimulation with IL-6 and IL-6R. Our results also indicated that treatment with IL-6 and IL-6R increased RANKL mRNA expression and the RANKL/OPG expression ratio. Meanwhile, the phosphorylation of Janus kinase 2 (JAK2) and Signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT3) also correlated with RANKL levels. Furthermore, we investigated the effects of a specific JAK2 inhibitor, AG490, on the expression of RANKL in osteocyte-like MLO-Y4 cells and osteocyte-mediated osteoclastogenesis. The results showed that AG490 inhibited (p)-JAK2 and RANKL expression. Osteoclastic differentiation was decreased after pretreatment in MLO-Y4 with mouse IL-6/IL-6R and AG490; therefore, we concluded that IL-6 increased osteocyte-mediated osteoclastic differentiation by activating JAK2 and RANKL. CONCLUSION: The effects of IL-6/il-6R and AG490 on osteocyte-mediated osteoclastogenesis contribute to our understanding of the role of inflammatory factors in the interaction between osteocytes and osteoclast precursors. IL-6 and RANKL are key factors for bone remodelling after the orthodontic surgery, and their roles in bone remodelling may be fundamental mechanisms accelerating tooth movement by orthodontic surgery.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Bone marrow adipogenesis is one of the major characteristics of aged bone. Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMMSCs) prefer to differentiate into adipocytes instead of osteoblasts in the bone marrow cavity in aged hosts. The mechanism of formation and function of adipocytes in aged bone marrow needs further investigation. Osteoprotegerin (OPG) is a member of the tumor necrosis factor receptor (TNFR) super family, and it can inhibit the activities of osteoclasts. We found that adipocyte numbers increased in the bone marrow of Opg knockout mice. In this study, we investigated the role of OPG in the differentiation of BMMSCs and bone marrow adipogenesis. METHODS: Histological analyses were performed on the bone tissues of Opg knockout (Opg-KO) and wild-type (WT) mice of different ages. BMMSCs obtained from mice were cultured in vitro to evaluate their differentiation abilities. RESULTS: With aging, the expression of Opg in the bone marrow of WT mice markedly decreased, but that of the adipogenic specific transcription factor peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (Ppar-γ) increased. Adipocytes formed in the bone marrow of Opg-KO mice at a relative young age, and the number of adipocytes increased dramatically with age. Compared with the WT control, the osteogenic differentiation of Opg-KO BMMSCs decreased, but the adipogenic differentiation increased. Moreover, exogenous OPG could inhibit the adipogenic differentiation and promote the osteogenic differentiation of Opg-KO BMMSCs in vitro. CONCLUSIONS: OPG plays an important role in regulating BMMSC differentiation and bone marrow adipogenesis.

The objective of the present study was to determine the 'stemness' characteristics of CD133+ cells (harvested from the squamous cell tongue carcinoma Tca-8113 cell line) in vitro and to observe the tumourigenicity of the CD133+ cells in the bodies of NOD/SCID mice. Single cells from the Tca-8113 cell line were observed for multiplication capacity in vitro. The suspending and pelletizing phenomena of Tca-8113 cells in vitro were also observed, and the expression of CD133 in squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue was measured. The CD133+ cells from the Tca-8113 cell line were purified, and their multiplication capacity and differentiation potency were observed. The NOD/SCID mouse model was established, and the tumourigenicity of the CD133+ cells was determined. The Tca-8113 cells were observed to emerge in the form of suspending tumour spheres in squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue. Monoplasts with sustainable multiplication capacity accounted for ~5.32% of the spheres, and 0.95% of the CD133+ cells were expressed in squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue, with stronger multiplication capacity and differentiation potency in vitro. Stronger tumourigenicity was also observed in the bodies of the NOD/SCID mice. CD133- cells exhibited a multiplication capacity to a certain extent. Overall, the CD133+ cells in squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue are characterised by relatively strong tumourigenicity capacity in vivo and in vitro. To a certain extent, these CD133+ cells demonstrate the characteristics of 'stemness'.

Hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) is a key regulator for tumor cells and tissues to adapt to hypoxic condition. Suppressing the expression of HIF-1α is important to evaluate its effect on cancer cells. This study was carried out to analyze the effect of HIF-1α on the biological activation of human tongue squamous cell carcinoma (TSCC) SCC-15 cells. In this experiment, deferoxamine mesylate (DFO) was used to induce hypoxic condition. HIF-1α gene was suppressed by lentiviral vector. The effect of the level of HIF-1α expression was tested on the proliferation, cell cycle, cell apoptosis and cell invasion of SCC-15 cells. We demonstrated that SCC-15 cells showed a more aggressive phenotype after treated with DFO. Additionally, DFO was able to induce the expression of HIF-1α protein. Lentiviral vector can effectively inhibit HIF-1α expression on mRNA and protein level. Under normoxic or hypoxic conditions, downregulation of HIF-1α for SCC-15 cells induced cell apoptosis and inhibited growth and invasion. These results showed that suppressing the expression of HIF-1α inhibited the aggressive potential of SCC-15 cells under normoxic and hypoxic condition. Thus, finding an effective and safe pathway to inhibit the expression of HIF-1α can help us to improve the survival rate of human TSCC patients.

The synthesis and characterization is reported of an efficient polysiloxane derivative containing the 1,3-bis(9-carbazolyl)benzene (mCP) moiety as a pendant unit on the polysiloxane backbone. In comparison with mCP, the mCP-polysiloxane hybrid (PmCPSi) has significantly improved thermal and morphological stabilities with a high decomposition temperature (Td = 523 °C) and glass transition temperature (Tg = 194 °C). The silicon-oxygen linkage of PmCPSi prevents intermolecular π-stacking and ensures a high triplet energy level (ET = 3.0 eV). Using PmCPSi as a host, blue phosphorescent organic light emitting devices (PhOLEDs) effectively confine triplet excitons, with efficient energy transfer to the guest emitter and a relatively low turn-on voltage of 5.8 V. A maximum external quantum efficiency of 9.24% and maximum current efficiency of 18.93 cd/A are obtained. These values are higher than for directly analogous poly(vinylcarbazole) (PVK) based devices (6.76%, 12.29 cd/A). Good color stability over a range of operating voltages is observed. A two-component "warm-white" device with a maximum current efficiency of 10.4 cd/A is obtained using a blend of blue and orange phosphorescent emitters as dopants in PmCPSi host. These results demonstrate that well-designed polysiloxane derivatives are highly efficient hosts suitable for low-cost solution-processed PhOLEDs.

The degradation of 17beta-oestradiol (E2) and 17alpha-ethinyloestradiol (EE2) was investigated in an aerobic activated sludge system fed with synthetic wastewater. The effect of different solid residence times (SRTs) and nitrification inhibitors, such as allylthiourea (ATU), was studied in order to assess which group of microorganisms plays a significant role in the degradation of oestrogens. E2 was effectively converted into oestrone (E1) under all the conditions encountered in the nitrifying activated sludge system. The degradation of E2 obeyed first-order reaction kinetics; with an increase in SRT from 12 to 20 days, the degradation rate constant, k, decreased from 2.3 h(-1) to 0.47 h(-1). The removal of EE2 did not change significantly with the addition of ATU and at different SRTs. Only about 20% of EE2 was removed from the system, which demonstrated that EE2 was more recalcitrant than natural oestrogens. The results are supported by other recent studies, which suggest that co-metabolic degradation of EE2 and E2 by ammonia-oxidizing bacteria is not an important removal mechanism. The primary mechanism for E2 and EE2 degradation in activated sludge is most probably the activity of heterotrophic bacteria.
