RESUMO

Sulfonamide (SA) is an emerging contaminants and the efficient treatment of SA containing wastewater remains a challenge. Herein, SA degradation by gamma irradiation has been systematacially studied. SA (10 mg/L) could be totally removed with 1.5 kGy irradiation. Quenching experiments demonstrated that •OH and eaq- were the predominant for SA degradation. SA degradation was reduced with initial concentration increasing, and the removal was faster with pH increasing in the range of 3.1-10.8. The coexisting matters affected SA degradation through changing reactive species, and the introduction of SO42- and Cl- enhanced SA degradation, while CO32- had a negative impact on SA degradation, and the degradation was insignificantly affected when adding humic acid. Gamma irradiation could remain effective in real water matrixes. In conjunction with LC-MS analysis and DFT calculation, possible degradation pathways for SA were proposed. Gamma irradiation could reduce the toxicity of SA, while several byproducts with more toxic were also formed. Furthermore, gamma/priodate (PI) process was promising to enhance SA degradation and mineralization. k value increased by 1.85 times, and mineralization rate increased from 19.51% to 79.19% when adding PI. This study suggested that ionizing radiation was efficient to eliminate SA in wastewater.

RESUMO

Amendments with activators or microorganisms to enhance phytoremediation in toxic-metal-polluted soils have been widely studied. In this research, the production of indoleacetic acid, siderophore, and 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC) deaminase by phosphate-solubilizing bacteria was investigated during a pure culture experiment. Pot experiments were performed using Cd-polluted soil with the following treatments: control (CK, only ultrapure water), orange-peel-based activator (OG), and a combination of phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (Acinetobacter pitti) and OG (APOG). Ryegrass plant height and fresh weight, Cd content in ryegrass, total and available Cd soil content, soil enzyme activity, and soil bacterial diversity were determined in this work. The findings showed that the height of ryegrass in OG and APOG increased by 14.78% and 21.23%. In the APOG group, a decreased ratio of Cd was 3.37 times that of CK, and the bioconcentration factor was 1.28 times that of CK. The neutral phosphatase activity of APOG was 1.33 times that of CK and catalase activity was 1.95 times that of CK. The activity of urease was increased by 35.48%. APOG increased the abundance of beneficial bacteria and Proteobacteria was the dominant bacterium, accounting for 57.38% in APOG. Redundancy analysis (RDA) showed that nutrient elements were conducive to the propagation of the dominant bacteria, the secretion of enzymes, and the extraction rate of Cd in the soil. The possible enhancement mechanism of phytoremediation of cadmium by A. pitti combined with OG was that, on the one hand, APOG increased soil nutrient elements and enzyme activities promoted the growth of ryegrass. On the other hand, APOG activated Cd and boosted the movement of Cd from soil to ryegrass. This research offers insight for the combination of phosphate-solubilizing bacteria with an orange-peel-based activator to improve phytoremediation of Cd-contaminated soils and also provides a new way for the resource utilization of fruit residue.

RESUMO

Antimony (Sb) pollution is considered an environmental problem, since Sb is toxic and carcinogenic to humans. Here, a novel biochar supported magnesium ferrite (BC@MF) was adopted for Sb(III) removal from groundwater. The maximum adsorption capacity was 77.44 mg g-1. Together with characterization, batch experiments, kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamic analyses suggested that inner-sphere complexation, H-bonding, and electrostatic interactions were the primary mechanisms. C-C/CC, C-O, and O-CO groups and Fe/Mg oxides might have acted as adsorption sites. The adsorbed Sb(III) was oxidized to Sb(V). The generation of reactive oxygen species, iron redox reaction, and oxidizing functional groups all contributed to Sb(III) oxidation. Furthermore, the fixed-bed column system demonstrated a satisfactory Sb removal performance; BC@MF could treat ∼6060 BV of simulated Sb-polluted groundwater. This research provides a promising approach to sufficiently remove Sb(III) from contaminated groundwater, providing new insights for the development of innovative strategies for heavy metal removal.

RESUMO

A green, high-efficiency, and wide pH tolerance water remediation process has been urgently acquired for the increasingly exacerbating contaminated water. In this study, a Fe3+/persulfate (Fe3+/PS) system was employed and enhanced with a green natural ligand cysteine (Cys) for the degradation of quinclorac (QNC). The introduction of Cys into the Fe3+/PS system widened the effective pH range to 9 with a superior removal rate for QNC. The mechanism revealed that the Fe3+/Cys/PS system can enhance the ability of degrading QNC by accelerating the Fe3+/Fe2+ redox cycle, maintaining Fe2+ concentration and thereby generating more HO• and SO4•-. The impact factors (i.e., pH, concentrations of PS, Fe3+ and Cys) were optimized as well. This work provides a promising strategy with high catalytic activity and wide pH tolerance for organic contaminated water remediation.

RESUMO

How to manage potato peel waste sustainably has been an issue faced by the potato industry. This work explored the feasibility of potato peel waste for biohydrogen production via dark fermentation, and investigated the effects of various inoculum enrichment methods (acid, aeration, heat-shock and base) on the process efficiency. It was observed that the hydrogen production showed a great variation when using various inoculum enrichment methods, and the aeration enriched inoculum obtained the maximum hydrogen yield of 71.0 mL/g-VSadded and VS removal of 28.9 %. Different enriched cultures also exhibited huge variations in the bacterial community structure and metabolic pathway. The highest abundance of Clostridium sensu stricto fundamentally contributed to the highest process efficiency for the fermenter inoculated with aeration treated culture. This work puts forward a promising strategy for recycling potato peel waste, and fills a gap in the optimal inoculum preparation method for biohydrogen fermentation of potato peel waste.

RESUMO

Milk vetch (MV, Astragalus sinicus L.) is used in agricultural production as a green manure; however, its impact on accumulation levels of heavy metals (e.g., Cd) in rice remains poorly understood. This study investigated the effects of MV on Cd accumulation in rice, iron plaque formation, soil properties, and the soil microbial community structure through field experiments. The results showed that MV reduced Cd concentration in the roots, stem, leaves, and grains by 33%, 60%, 71%, and 49%, respectively. Chemical fertilizer and MV treatment promoted iron plaque formation, and MV considerably increased the Fe/Mn ratio in the iron plaque. More importantly, MV inhibited Cd transportation from the root iron plaque to the root by 74%. The concentrations of CaCl2-extractable Cd, available phosphorus, and available potassium, as well as the cation exchange capacity and urease activity, were significantly reduced in the MV treatment. Furthermore, 16 S rDNA high-throughput sequencing results of the soil microbial community structure showed that compared with the control, MV increased the soil microbial richness, increased the relative abundance of anaerobic microorganisms, and significantly increased the relative abundance of Thermodesulfovibrio and Geobacter at the genus level. The increase in anaerobic microbial abundance was closely related to the decrease in CaCl2-extractable Cd concentration. The application of MV promoted the formation of iron plaque, inhibited the transport of Cd, increased the abundance of anaerobic microorganisms, decreased the CaCl2-extractable Cd concentration, and reduced the Cd concentration in rice grain.

RESUMO

Benzotriazole ultraviolet stabilizers (BUVSs) are ubiquitous emerging pollutants that have been reported to show estrogenic disruption effects through interaction with the classic estrogen receptors (ERs) in the fashion of low activity. The present study aims at revealing the potential disruption mechanism via estrogen-related receptors α and γ (ERRα and ERRγ) pathways. By the competitive binding assay, we first found that BUVSs bond to ERRγ ligand binding domain (ERRγ-LBD) with Kd ranging from 0.66 to 19.27 µM. According to the results of reporter gene assays, the transcriptional activities of ERRα and ERRγ were promoted by most tested BUVSs with the lowest observed effective concentrations (LOEC) from 10 to 100 nM, which are in the range of human exposure levels. At 1 µM, most tested BUVSs showed higher agonistic activity toward ERRγ than ERRα. The most effective two BUVSs promoted the MCF-7 proliferation dependent on ERRα and ERRγ with a LOEC of 100 nM. The molecular dynamics simulation showed that most studied BUVSs had lower binding free energy with ERRγ than with ERRα. The structure-activity relationship analysis revealed that molecular polarizability, electron-donating ability, ionization potential, and softness were the main structural factors impacting the binding of BUVSs with ERRγ. Overall, our results provide novel insights into the estrogenic disruption effects of BUVSs.

RESUMO

Paddy soils in southern China are heavily co-polluted by arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd). The accumulation of these contaminants in rice grains may pose a high health risk. We evaluated the impact of adjusted water management practice (i.e., conventional irrigation and aerobic treatment after heading stage) and the application of two immobilization agents (i.e., CaO and Fe2O3) on the accumulation of As and Cd in rice grains of three rice varieties (i.e., Jinyou-463, Jinyou-268, and Mabayouzhan). The different schemes were tested via conducting a field experiment in paddy soil in Shaoguan, Guangdong Province, China. The results showed that the combined scheme (selecting Jinyou-268, aerobic water management after the heading stage, and 0.09% CaO and 0.5% Fe2O3 amendments) exhibited the best performance in the reduction of As and Cd accumulation in rice grains. This combined scheme decreased the grain As concentration by 26.19% and maintained the Cd at a low level (0.056 mg/kg) as compared to the use of local conventional irrigation patterns. Moreover, health risk assessment demonstrated that by applying the optimal scheme, neither As nor Cd content in rice had carcinogenic risk. However, the grain As remains at a high non-carcinogenic risk. We suggest that future field study design should fully incorporate the uncertainty of the natural environment to make the research conclusions more feasible for popularization and utilization. This study demonstrated an approach of utilizing the synergy effects of various measures for safe rice production in fields subjected to As and Cd contaminations.

RESUMO

Ball milling (BM) as a solvent-free technology has been widely used to tailor the biochar-based adsorbents with high porosity and well dispersion for enhancing their environmental applications. In this study, the ball-milled layered double hydroxides (LDHs) biochar composite (B-LDHs-BC) was successfully fabricated with BM method for Cd(II) adsorption and the BM effects on the LDHs-BC structure-performance relationships were investigated. The solid-state characterization demonstrated the LDHs were successfully exfoliated by BM on the B-LDHs-BC surface which was identified by the enlarged basal spacing and reduced crystallite size of the LDHs. Although the BET surface area of B-LDHs-BC (226 m2/g) was slightly lower than the ball-milled BC, the B-LDHs-BC had more O-containing functional groups and higher adsorption capacity (119 mg/g). The kinetics experiments indicated that the Cd(II) removal by B-LDHs-BC was through both the physical and chemical adsorption processes, and the liquid membrane diffusion was the rate-controlling step. The positive BM effects mainly induced more abundant acidic functional groups and active adsorption sites, and thus enhanced Cd(II) performance of B-LDHs-BC. This work demonstrated a facile solvent-free method for production of the exfoliated LDHs modified BC composite, and also well illustrated the BM effects which can extend their practical use in environment.

RESUMO

Carbothermal reduction is a convenient and cost-effective method to produce biochar (BC) supported iron-based nano-particles (INP) for oxyanion contaminants removal. However, considering the possible desorption of the target oxyanion during change of the surrounding environment, the detailed removal mechanisms remain unclear and the long-term efficiency of different INPs cannot be predicted. In this study, different BC/Fe composites were synthesized by controlling the pyrolysis temperatures (500-800 °C). BC/Fe3O4 composite synthesized at 500 °C (BC/Fe500) possessed the strongest surface acidity thus with the best SeO42- removal performance, and BC/Fe0/Fe3O4 composite synthesized at 650 °C (BC/Fe650) possessed the best reducing ability toward SeO42-. Through the co-removal experiments (SeO42- and common competing oxyanions co-existed) and the investigation of Se stability loaded on BC/Fe composites, the removal of SeO42- by BC/Fe500 through highly reversible adsorption could not achieve long-term immobilization of Se, making it an appropriate adsorbent for pre-treatment only, while the efficient reduction of SeO42- to Se0 by BC/Fe650 could largely improve its long-term stability. This study supplies a possible strategy for Se immobilization against common competing oxyanions.

RESUMO

p-arsanilic acid (p-ASA) is still widely applied as feed additive in many countries. Accompanied with chemical reactions in the environment, p-ASA will release more toxic inorganic arsenic. In order to safely and efficiently treat p-ASA flow washing into the environment, iron encapsulated B/N-doped carbon nanotubes (Fe@C-NB) were fabricated and used as the catalyst for the degradation of p-ASA. The calcination temperature and the dose of the iron salt have significant effects on the structure and properties of the catalysts. We have produced a series of catalysts of the same type to facilitate the degradation of p-ASA. Under optimal conditions of material (Fe@C-NB) syntheses, both 95% degradation of p-ASA and 86% total arsenic immobilization can be obtained with oxidant (Peroxymonosulfate, PMS) and catalyst (Fe@C-NB) treatment after 60 min. The effects of oxidant types (peroxydisulfate (PDS), PMS, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)), amount, initial solution pH, inorganic anion, and other reaction conditions were studied in the p-ASA removal. In this Fenton-like reaction, the Fe@C-NB exhibits high efficiency and excellent stability without complex preparation methods; besides, the advantages of short reaction time and natural reaction conditions in Fe@C-NB/PMS system will promote the practical application of Fenton-like.

RESUMO

The production of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) produces a great deal of waste water, and dinitrotoluene sulfonates (DNTs) are the main pollutants in its waste. This paper presents a pilot investigation on the geochemical transformation of DNTs affected by historical wastewater spillage from a typical TNT production company in Northwest China. In the horizontal direction, DNTs diffused from the evaporation pond to the surrounding area of the site, and the concentration of DNTs in the evaporation pond surface soil exceeded 1000 mg/kg. The horizontal distribution of DNTs in the site showed a migration trend to the east and south of evaporation, which was consistent with the terrain of high northwest and low southeast of the site. Due to the high water solubility of pollutants, water flow is the main driving force for the horizontal distribution of DNTs. In the vertical direction, the concentration of pollutants gradually increased with the depth of the soil. DNTs are mainly adsorbed in the third layer (6.0-8.0 m). It can be seen that the accumulation of the 2,4-DNTs-3-SO3- is obviously larger than that of the 2,4-DNTs-5-SO3-, which may be related to the steric hindrance effect of sulfonic acid groups in the two isomers. Results showed DNTs distribution strongly linked to soil physicochemical properties and the migration of DNTs in soil exhibited obvious heterogeneity in time and space. The carcinogenic risks in surface soil (0-1.5 m) and lower soil (1.5-6.0 m, 6.0-8.0 m) are all higher than 1✕10-6; non-carcinogenic risk surface soil (0-1.5 m) is 4.011✕10, which is greater than 1, indicating that they may cause certain harm to the human body. Meanwhile, this study presented a pioneering investigation for the contamination and geochemical transfer of DNTs.

RESUMO

Brassica napus L. (oilseed rape) was grown with daikon and white lupin in a polyvinyl chloride split pot experiment (with no barrier between the compartments or by a nylon mesh barrier (37 µm) to license partial root interaction, or a solid barrier to stop any root interactions) to examine the effect of rhizosphere interaction on the cadmium uptake. The results showed that shoot and root biomasses of oilseed rape were 40.66% and 26.94% less than that of the monocropped treatment (solid barrier) when intercropping with daikon under the rhizosphere complete interaction. However, the intermingling of roots between oilseed rape and white lupin notably enhanced the dry biomass of oilseed rape by 40.23% and decreased with the reduction of root contact. Oilseed rape intercropping with daikon enhanced the shoot Cd concentration of oilseed rape. The shoot Cd concentration (44.8 mg/kg) of oilseed rape when intercropped white lupin under complete rhizosphere interaction were greater than those of other treatments. Additionally, the intermingling of roots played a positive role in the content of citric and malic acids when intercropping with white lupin. In all systems, the BCF values of oilseed rape >5. Therefore, intercropping with white lupin may contribute to higher biomass and increased uptake Cd by oilseed rape. We can toward sustainable positive effects on phytoremediation that based on a better understanding of rhizosphere processes.

RESUMO

Paddy soil contaminated by cadmium (Cd) has attracted worldwide attention, while foliar spraying of zinc (Zn) could be considered a cost-effective and practical agronomic measure for reducing Cd accumulation in rice grain. However, the effects due to foliar spraying of Zn on different cultivars, as well as the mechanism of subsequent processes taking place are not fully understood up to now. To go a step ahead, a field experiment was conducted with the aim of studying the capability of foliar application of Zn (0.4% ZnSO4) to reduce Cd concentration in grain in five late rice cultivars (here named JLYHZ, FYY272, JY284, CLY7 and LXY130), and the antioxidant activities and subcellular distribution of Cd in the leaves. The results indicate that foliar Zn application significantly decreased grain yield in JY284, CLY7 and JLYHZ, compared to controls. In addition, foliar application of Zn significantly decreased Cd concentration in grain of the five rice cultivars, while increased Zn concentration. The effect of foliar application of Zn on transport coefficients of Cd varied greatly for the different rice cultivars. Foliar application of Zn significantly decreased the malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration in rice leaves, and increased peroxidase (POD) activity. Also, it changed the distribution of Cd in the soluble fraction in leaves (expressed as proportion), which was significantly decreased, and the proportion of Cd in the cell wall increased. The structural equation model (SEM) revealed the positive effects of flag leaf Cd, first node Cd, old leaf Cd, and root Cd concentration on grain Cd concentration. Flag leaf Cd had the highest standardized total effects on grain Cd concentration, followed by old leaf Cd. These results indicated that foliar application of Zn was effective in reducing grain Cd concentration of late rice by enhancing antioxidant activities and Cd chelation onto cell wall of leaves, and reducing Cd concentrations in leaves.

RESUMO

The impacts of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) on biological nutrient removal and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions have been specifically studied. The experimental results show that PFOA inhibited nitrification, but promoted denitrification and reduced N2O emissions without significantly affecting phosphorus removal. The existence of 20 mg/L of PFOA increased total nitrogen removal efficiency from 78.7 ± 6.89 % to 86.8 ± 6.39 % and reduced N2O emission factor from 6.02 ± 0.24 % to 4.43 ± 0.10 %. The mechanism studies reveal that microorganisms released extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) under PFOA exposure to protect sludge cells against PFOA toxicity. The generated PFOA-EPS conjugates reduced the nitrification rate, but increased the denitrification rate by regulating the activity of oxidoreductases. In addition, PFOA reduced the activity of polyphosphate accumulating organisms and glycogen accumulating organisms to save carbon source for denitrification, which reduced the electronic competition between reductases, thereby achieving complete denitrification and N2O mitigation. The promotion of PFOA for denitrification and N2O mitigation can gain a more comprehensive cognition of the role of PFOA in wastewater treatment. The release mechanism of EPS can afford new insights for the development of effective methods to enhance nitrogen removal and reduce N2O emissions.

RESUMO

Cadmium (Cd) pollution is a key concern globally that affects plant growth and productivity. Boron (B) is a micronutrient that helps in the formation of the primary cell wall (CW) and alleviates negative effects of toxic elements on plant growth. Nonetheless, knowledge about how B can reduce Cd toxicity in rice seedlings is not enough, particularly regarding CW-Cd adsorption. Therefore, the current experiment investigated the alleviative role of B on Cd toxicity in rice seedling. The experiment was carried out with 0 µM and 30 µM H3BO3 under 50 µM Cd toxicity in hydroponics. The results showed that Cd exposure alone inhibited plant growth parameters and caused lipid peroxidation. Moreover, Cd toxicity led to obvious visible toxicity symptoms on the leaves. However, increasing the availability of B alleviated Cd toxicity by reducing Cd concentration in plant tissues and improving antioxidative system. Moreover, cell wall pectin and hemicellulose adsorbed a significant amount of Cd. Fourier-Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) spectra exhibited that cell wall functional groups were increased by B application. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) microanalysis confirmed the higher Cd binding onto CW. The findings of this investigation showed that B could mitigate Cd stress by decreasing Cd uptake and encouraging Cd adsorption on CW, and activation of the protective mechanisms. The present results might help to increase rice productivity on Cd polluted soils.

RESUMO

To investigate biohythane production and microbial behavior during temperature-phased (TP) anaerobic co-digestion (AcD) of rice straw (RS) and pig manure (PM), a mesophilic-thermophilic (M1-T1) AcD system and a thermophilic-mesophilic (T2-M2) AcD system were continuously operated for 95 days in parallel. The maximal ratio (8.44%v/v) of produced hydrogen to methane demonstrated the feasibility of biohythane production by co-digestion of RS and PM. T2-M2 exhibited higher hydrogen (16.68 ± 1.88 mL/gVS) and methane (197.73 ± 11.77 mL/gVS) yields than M1-T1 (3.08 ± 0.39 and 109.03 ± 4.97 mL/gVS, respectively). Methanobrevibacter (75.62%, a hydrogenotrophic methanogen) dominated in the M1 reactor, resulting in low hydrogen production. Hydrogen-producing bacteria (Thermoanaerobacterium 32.06% and Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1 27.33%) dominated in T2, but the abundance of hydrolytic bacteria was low, indicating that hydrolysis could be a rate-limiting step. The thermophilic acid-producing phase provided effective selective pressure for hydrogen-consuming microbes, and the high diversity of microbes in M2 implied a more efficient pathway of methane production.

RESUMO

The gradual increase of cadmium (Cd) in soils has caused environmental and health risk, and it's important to study the accumulation trend to evoke the awareness of farmland safety management. This research during the period of March in 2017-2018 evaluated the input (irrigation, atmospheric deposition, fertilizer and pesticide application) and the output (runoff and seepage, grain and straw uptake) of Cd in contaminated farmland irrigated with sewage water in Hebei Province. The experimental results indicated sewage irrigation (51.03%), and atmospheric deposition (46.35%) were the main input pathways; Grain uptake (42.72%) and straw removal (50.71%) played a major role in output fluxes. The input-output balance (net transport fluxes) of Cd in the farmland were estimated to be +3621.68 ~ +8899.78 mg·(ha·yr)-1 under different conditions (sewage irrigation with straw returning/straw removal, clean water irrigation with straw returning/straw removal), representing there was a Cd inputting in the farmland during the study. Even in the case of the lowest net transport fluxes, the annual increase of Cd concentration in soils reached to 0.0014 mg/kg. Therefore, it's necessary to take action that cutting off those pathway inputs into farmland ecosystems, such as monitoring the water quality of irrigation water sources, applying fertilizer and pesticide properly. Furthermore, attentions need to be paid to the Cd input into the farmland and environmental risks that may arise while returning straw to the field for improving soil fertility and crop production.

RESUMO

A bacterial consortium for efficient decontamination of high-concentration Fe-Mn acid mine drainage (AMD) was successfully isolated. The removal efficiencies of Fe and Mn were effective, reaching 99.8 % and 98.6 %, respectively. High-throughput sequencing of the 16S rRNA genes demonstrated that the microbial community had changed substantially during the treatment. The Fe-Mn oxidizing bacteria Flavobacterium, Brevundimonas, Stenotrophomonas and Thermomonas became dominant genera, suggesting that they might play vital roles in Fe and Mn removal. Moreover, the pH of culture increased obviously after incubation, which was benefit for depositing Fe and Mn from AMD. The specific surface area of the biogenic Fe-Mn oxides was 108-121 m2/g, and the surface contained reactive oxygen functional groups (-OH and -COOH), which also improved Fe and Mn removal efficiency. Thus, this study provides an alternative method to treat AMD containing high concentrations of Fe and Mn.

RESUMO

The physico-chemical characteristics of N fertilizers remain poorly understood with respect to their use with rape (Brassica napus L.) to remediate Cd-contaminated soil. In this work, eight types of fertilizer (comprising physico-chemical alkaline, neutral, and acidic N fertilizers) were employed to assess the effect of soil remediation via rape at different levels of Cd contamination (0, 5, and 10 mg kg-1 Cd). The results show that the pH of rhizosphere soils was significantly higher under physico-chemical alkaline N fertilizer treatments than under physico-chemical acidic and neutral N fertilizer treatments. The physico-chemical characteristics of N fertilizers affected the rhizosphere soil pH and promoted Cd phytoextraction and accumulation by rape. In the 5 mg kg-1 Cd-contaminated soil, the Cd accumulation and bioconcentration factor value in the shoots and the Cd translocation factor value were highest with the addition of NH4Cl, a physico-chemical acidic N fertilizer. Among the physico-chemical alkaline N fertilizers, Ca(NO3)2 enabled the highest accumulation of Cd in rape shoots when soil was contaminated with 10 mg kg-1 Cd. Thus, administering physico-chemical acidic N fertilizer to soils with lower Cd concentrations provides better remediation effects by rape, whereas physico-chemical alkaline N fertilizers are more effective in soils with higher Cd concentrations. These results show that physico-chemical N fertilizers can be employed to enhance the remediation of Cd-contaminated soil by rape and simultaneously improve the yield of this crop, with implications for environmental health and sustainable agricultural development.
