RESUMO

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a three-month Guolin Qigong (GQ) intervention on physical fitness and patient-reported health outcomes among patients with lung cancer. METHODS: This pilot study was a non-randomized controlled trial. Eligible participants who were over 18 years of age and diagnosed with stage I-IV lung cancer were enrolled in the study and received either the GQ intervention or usual care (UC). Participants in the GQ group performed GQ at least twice a week (one hour per session) for three months. Physical fitness (chair stand, arm curl, sit and reach, back scratch, 8-foot up and go, 6-min walk test) was assessed at baseline, post-intervention, six months, and 12 months. Self-reported quality of life and sleep (European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life questionnaire and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index) were assessed at baseline, post-intervention, and six months. RESULTS: Forty-nine participants (65% females, 59.1 ± 7.0 years old, ranging from 39 to 71 years old) were enrolled in the study, and 25 participants completed all tests at 12-month follow-up (13 in GQ vs. 12 in UC; 68% females, 59.3 ± 5.5 years old). Compared to the UC group, results for the chair stand and arm curl tests improved significantly in the GQ group from baseline to post-intervention (P = 0.024 and P = 0.041, respectively). Similarly, the 8-foot up and go test improved in the GQ group from baseline to post-intervention and 12 months (P = 0.004 and P = 0.008, respectively) when compared to the UC group. Between-group analyses also revealed a statistically significant improvement in global health status/quality of life from baseline to six months (P = 0.018) and quality of sleep from baseline to post-intervention (P = 0.034) in favor of the GQ group. CONCLUSION: GQ had a beneficial effect on lower and upper body strength, locomotor performance (speed, agility, and balance while moving), quality of sleep, and quality of life among lung cancer survivors, but further randomized controlled trials are warranted to confirm these findings. TRIAL REGISTRATION: The trial has been registered in the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (ChiCTR2200059145).

RESUMO

Using nationally representative data (N = 6,431) from the 2007-2010 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, we estimated the prevalence of self-reported adherence to guidelines-recommended physical activity level and prolonged sedentary behavior among US working adults 20 years of age and above by occupation. Sex and age were used for adjustment by direct standardization to the year 2000 Census population. Participants in "computer, mathematical" (47.77%) and "business, financial operations" (54.95%) occupations had the lowest prevalence of self-reported adherence to guidelines-recommended physical activity level; participants in "computer, mathematical" (72.19%) and "legal" (62.70%) occupations had the highest prevalence of prolonged sedentary behavior in all occupations. Public physical activity campaigns and workplace wellness programs should take into account the differences in physical activity and sedentary behavior patterns across occupation groups.

RESUMO

Using differential item functioning (DIF) analyses, this study examined whether there were any DF items in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) physical activity (PA) questionnaire. A subset of adult data from the 2003-04 NHANES study (n = 3,083) was used. PA items related to respondents' occupational, transportation, domestic, leisure-time, strength-related, and sedentary activities were analyzed for DIF using Mantel-Haenszel, SIBTEST, and analysis of variance procedures. Some items were identified as DF items, with the majority of those items favoring advantaged social groups. For example, items about domestic activity and moderate-intensity leisure-time activity were DF items favoring non-Hispanic Whites, and persons with higher levels of education (e.g., some college or more) or income (e.g, annual family income [AFI] > $34,999). The vigorous activity item was a DIF item favoring younger adults (ages 20-59 years) and persons with higher levels of education or income. Occupational PA presented DF favoring Hispanics and persons with lower levels of education (e.g., high school or less), and the transportation-related PA item presented DF favoring persons with lower incomes (e.g., AFI $34,999). These findings highlight the importance of conducting DF analysis in PA survey construction and emphasize the need to introduce DIF concepts and methods to PA researchers.

RESUMO

The electromagnetic and microwave absorbing properties of nickel ferrite nanocrystals were investigated for the first time. There were two frequencies corresponding to the maximum reflection loss in a wide thickness range from 3.0 to 5.0 mm, which may be bought by the nanosize effect and the good crystallization of the nanocrystals.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify subgroup-sensitive physical activities (PA) using differential item functioning (DIF) analysis. METHODS: A sub-unweighted sample of 1857 (men=923 and women=934) from the 2003-2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey PA questionnaire data was used for the analyses. Using the Mantel-Haenszel, the simultaneous item bias test, and the ANOVA DIF methods, 33 specific leisure-time moderate and/or vigorous PA (MVPA) items were analyzed for DIF across race/ethnicity, gender, education, income, and age groups. RESULTS: Many leisure-time MVPA items were identified as large DIF items. When participating in the same amount of leisure-time MVPA, non-Hispanic blacks were more likely to participate in basketball and dance activities than non-Hispanic whites (NHW); NHW were more likely to participated in golf and hiking than non-Hispanic blacks; Hispanics were more likely to participate in dancing, hiking, and soccer than NHW, whereas NHW were more likely to engage in bicycling, golf, swimming, and walking than Hispanics; women were more likely to participate in aerobics, dancing, stretching, and walking than men, whereas men were more likely to engage in basketball, fishing, golf, running, soccer, weightlifting, and hunting than women; educated persons were more likely to participate in jogging and treadmill exercise than less educated persons; persons with higher incomes were more likely to engage in golf than those with lower incomes; and adults (20-59 yr) were more likely to participate in basketball, dancing, jogging, running, and weightlifting than older adults (60+ yr), whereas older adults were more likely to participate in walking and golf than younger adults. CONCLUSIONS: DIF methods are able to identify subgroup-sensitive PA and thus provide useful information to help design group-sensitive, targeted interventions for disadvantaged PA subgroups.
