Purpose: We aimed to perform a meta-analysis with the intention of evaluating the reliability and test accuracy of the aMAP risk score in the identification of HCC. Methods: A systematic search was performed in PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane, Embase, and Web of Science databases from inception to September 2023, to identify studies measuring the aMAP score in patients for the purpose of predicting the occurrence or recurrence of HCC. The meta-analysis was performed using the meta package in R version 4.1.0. The diagnostic accuracy meta-analysis was conducted using Meta-DiSc software. Results: Thirty-five studies 102,959 participants were included in the review. The aMAP score was significantly higher in the HCC group than in the non-HCC group, with a mean difference of 6.15. When the aMAP score is at 50, the pooled sensitivity, specificity, negative likelihood ratio, and positive likelihood ratio with 95% CI was 0.961 (95% CI 0.936, 0.976), 0.344 (95% CI 0.227, 0.483), 0.114 (95% CI 0.087, 0.15), and 1.464 (95% CI 1.22, 1.756), respectively. At a cutoff value of 60, the pooled sensitivity, specificity, negative likelihood ratio, and positive likelihood ratio with 95% CI was 0.594 (95% CI 0.492, 0.689), 0.816 (95% CI 0.714, 0.888), 0.497 (95% CI 0.418, 0.591), and 3.235 (95% CI 2.284, 4.582), respectively. Conclusion: The aMAP score is a reliable, accurate, and easy-to-use tool for predicting HCC patients of all stages, including early-stage HCC. Therefore, the aMAP score can be a valuable tool for surveillance of HCC patients and can help to improve early detection and reduce mortality.

Hexavalent chromium (CrVI) poses a serious risk to both human and environment health. Hence, a simple, robust, and efficient analytical method must be developed to monitor the presence of Cr(VI) in the environment. The current investigation concentrated on the colorimetric detection of Cr(VI) using TMB as indicator in the presence of H2O2. The study found that Cr(VI) reacts with H2O2 to generate hydroxyl radicals which oxidize TMB in a concentration dependent manner. Under optimized conditions, the method obtained a good linearity range (0.025-0.5 mg/L, r2 = 0.9944) with LOD and LOQ of 0.009 mg/L and 0.029 mg/L, respectively. The technique was further improved by the addition of EDTA in the sample preparation protocol to reduce the false positive result by the presence of ions like Cu2+, Fe3+, etc. The study recorded improved Cr(VI) recoveries (81.73-111.40 %) at different fortification levels (0.1-0.5 mg/L). Under optimized conditions, the EDTA added method obtained a good linear response (r2 = 0.9952) with a detection limit of 0.023 mg/L which is less than the prescribed limits by WHO (0.05 mg/L) and US EPA (0.1 mg/L) for drinking water. The developed analytical method is very simple without use of any nanomaterial and the results with natural water samples show that it has the potential for real-time detection of Cr(VI) in the environment.

Perilla leaf oil (PLO) is a global premium vegetable oil with abundant nutrients and substantial economic value, rendering it susceptible to potential adulteration by unscrupulous entrepreneurs. The addition of cinnamon oil (CO) is one of the main adulteration avenues for illegal PLOs. In this study, new and real-time ambient mass spectrometric methods were developed to detect CO adulteration in PLO. First, atmospheric solids analysis probe tandem mass spectrometry combined with principal component analysis and principal component analysis-linear discriminant analysis was employed to differentiate between authentic and adulterated PLO. Then, a spectral library was established for the instantaneous matching of cinnamaldehyde in the samples. Finally, the results were verified using the SRM mode of ASAP-MS/MS. Within 3 min, the three methods successfully identified CO adulteration in PLO at concentrations as low as 5% v/v with 100% accuracy. The proposed strategy was successfully applied to the fraud detection of CO in PLO.

NMR is widely used for metabolite profiling (metabolomics, metabonomics) particularly of various readily obtainable biofluids such as plasma and urine. It is especially valuable for stable isotope tracer studies to track metabolic pathways under control or perturbed conditions in a wide range of cell models as well as animal models and human subjects. NMR has unique properties for utilizing stable isotopes to edit or simplify otherwise complex spectra acquired in vitro and in vivo, while quantifying the level of enrichment at specific atomic positions in various metabolites (i.e., isotopomer distribution analysis).In this protocol, we give an overview with specific protocols for NMR-based stable isotope-resolved metabolomics, or SIRM, with a workflow from administration of isotope-enriched precursors, via sample preparation through to NMR data collection and reduction. We focus on indirect detection of common NMR-active stable isotopes including 13C, 15N, 31P, and 2H, using a variety of 1H-based two-dimensional experiments. We also include the application and analyses of multiplex tracer experiments.

Significance: Standardization of fluorescence molecular imaging (FMI) is critical for ensuring quality control in guiding surgical procedures. To accurately evaluate system performance, two metrics, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and contrast, are widely employed. However, there is currently no consensus on how these metrics can be computed. Aim: We aim to examine the impact of SNR and contrast definitions on the performance assessment of FMI systems. Approach: We quantified the SNR and contrast of six near-infrared FMI systems by imaging a multi-parametric phantom. Based on approaches commonly used in the literature, we quantified seven SNRs and four contrast values considering different background regions and/or formulas. Then, we calculated benchmarking (BM) scores and respective rank values for each system. Results: We show that the performance assessment of an FMI system changes depending on the background locations and the applied quantification method. For a single system, the different metrics can vary up to ∼ 35 dB (SNR), ∼ 8.65 a . u . (contrast), and ∼ 0.67 a . u . (BM score). Conclusions: The definition of precise guidelines for FMI performance assessment is imperative to ensure successful clinical translation of the technology. Such guidelines can also enable quality control for the already clinically approved indocyanine green-based fluorescence image-guided surgery.

4-Nitrophenol (4-NP), as a toxic and refractory pollutant, has generated significant concern due to its adverse effects. However, the potential toxic effects and mechanism remained unclear. In this study, the reproduction, development, locomotion and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production of Caenorhabditis elegans were investigated to evaluate the 4-NP toxicity. We used metabolomics to assess the potential damage mechanisms. The role of metabolites in mediating the relationship between 4-NP and phenotypes was examined by correlation and mediation analysis. 4-NP (8 ng/L and 8 µg/L) caused significant reduction of brood size, ovulation rate, total germ cells numbers, head thrashes and body bends, and an increase in ROS. However, the oosperm numbers in uterus, body length and body width were decreased in 8 µg/L. Moreover, 36 differential metabolites were enriched in the significant metabolic pathways, including lysine biosynthesis, ß-alanine metabolism, tryptophan metabolism, pentose phosphate pathway, pentose and glucuronate interconversions, amino sugar and nucleotide sugar metabolism, starch and sucrose metabolism, galactose metabolism, propanoate metabolism, glycerolipid metabolism, and estrogen signaling pathway. The mechanism of 4-NP toxicity was that oxidative stress caused by the perturbation of amino acid, which had effects on energy metabolism through disturbing carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, and finally affected the estrogen signaling pathway to exert toxic effects. Moreover, correlation and mediation analysis showed glycerol-3P, glucosamine-6P, glucosamine-1P, UDP-galactose, L-aspartic acid, and uracil were potential markers for the reproduction and glucose-1,6P2 for developmental toxicity. The results provided insight into the pathways involved in the toxic effects caused by 4-NP and developed potential biomarkers to evaluate 4-NP toxicity.

In this chapter, we outline the steps for designing and conducting a rigorous systematic review and meta-analysis, focusing on the efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) in elderly patients. ICIs have improved survival rates in advanced cancers, yet their effectiveness in older populations remains unclear. We detail the essential processes involved in both systematic reviews and meta-analyses. We can evaluate the efficacy of ICIs in elderly patients with advanced cancer, examining outcomes such as overall survival and progression-free survival.

BACKGROUND: Although progress has been made in accurate diagnosis and targeted treatments, breast cancer (BC) patients with metastasis still present a grim prognosis. With the continuous emergence and development of new personalized and precision medicine targeting specific tumor biomarkers, there is an urgent need to find new metastatic and prognostic biomarkers for BC patients. METHODS: We were dedicated to identifying genes linked to metastasis and prognosis in breast cancer through a combination of in silico analysis and experimental validation. RESULTS: A total of 25 overlap differentially expressed genes were identified. Ten hub genes (namely MRPL13, CTR9, TCEB1, RPLP0, TIMM8B, METTL1, GOLT1B, PLK2, PARL and MANBA) were identified and confirmed. MRPL13, TCEB1 and GOLT1B were shown to be associated with the worse overall survival (OS) and were optionally chosen for further verification by western blot. Only MRPL13 was found associated with cell invasion, and the expression of MRPL13 in metastatic BC was significantly higher than in primary BC. CONCLUSION: We proposed MRPL13 could be a potential novel biomarker for the metastasis and prognosis of breast cancer.

La evaluación de la marcha en cinta caminadora puede resultar relevante para la toma de decisiones clínicas. No obstante, factores demográficos como la edad y el IMC pueden alterar la interpretación de los resultados. Nuestro objetivo fue obtener variables espacio- temporales, energéticas y costo de transporte durante la velocidad autoseleccionada en cinta caminadora para una muestra representativa de adultos uruguayos (n=28) y evaluar si diferentes rangos de edades e IMC pueden ser factores a tener en cuenta en pruebas clínicas donde se consideren dichas variables. Participaron 17 hombres y 11 mujeres (39,3 ± 14,8 años, 75,9 ± 12,5 kg, 1,74 ± 0,09 m, IMC 25,2 ± 4,06). Se realizó una reconstrucción 3D del movimiento en forma sincronizada con el consumo energético. Se obtuvieron valores de referencia y luego de agrupar los participantes según su IMC y rango de edad se compararon los datos mediante test de t (p≤0.05). Los resultados revelaron discrepancias significativas en las medidas espacio-temporales y energéticas de los adultos uruguayos al caminar en cinta con respecto a la literatura. La marcha difiere entre adultos jóvenes y de mediana edad en su velocidad autoseleccionada (p=0,03), longitud de zancada (p=0,01), trabajo mecánico externo (<0,001) y recuperación de energía mecánica (0,009), destacando la importancia de considerar la edad en evaluaciones clínicas. El IMC no influyó significativamente en estas variables. Estos hallazgos subrayan la necesidad de ajustar las interpretaciones de las pruebas clínicas de la marcha sobre cinta caminadora en adultos uruguayos de mediana edad (45 a 65 años).


Treadmill gait assessment can be relevant for clinical decision-making. However, demographic factors such as age and BMI may alter result interpretation. Our aim was to obtain spatiotemporal, energetic, and cost of transport variables during self-selected treadmill walking speed for a representative sample of Uruguayan adults (n=28) and to assess if different age ranges and BMI could be factors to consider in clinical tests involving these variables. Seventeen men and eleven women participated (39.3 ± 14.8 years, 75.9 ± 12.5 kg, 1.74 ± 0.09 m, BMI 25.2 ± 4.06). A synchronized 3D motion reconstruction was performed with energy consumption. Reference values were obtained and data were compared using t-tests (p≤0.05), after grouping participants by BMI and age range. Results revealed significant discrepancies in spatiotemporal and energetic measures of Uruguayan adults walking on the treadmill, compared to the literature. Gait differed between young and middle-aged adults in their self-selected speed (p=0.03), stride length (p=0.01), external mechanical work (p<0.001), and mechanical energy recovery (0.009), emphasizing the importance of considering age in clinical evaluations. BMI did not significantly influence these variables. These findings underscore the need to adjust interpretations of treadmill gait clinical tests in middle-aged Uruguayan adults (45 to 65 years).


A avaliação da marcha na esteira pode ser relevante para a tomada de decisões clínicas. No entanto, fatores demográficos como idade e IMC podem alterar a interpretação dos resultados. Nosso objetivo foi obter variáveis espaço-temporais, energéticas e custo de transporte durante a velocidade de caminhada autoselecionada na esteira para uma amostra representativa de adultos uruguaios (n = 28) e avaliar se diferentes faixas etárias e IMC podem ser fatores a serem considerados em testes clínicos que envolvam essas variáveis. Dezessete homens e onze mulheres participaram (39,3 ± 14,8 anos, 75,9 ± 12,5 kg, 1,74 ± 0,09 m, IMC 25,2 ± 4,06). Foi realizada uma reconstrução tridimensional do movimento sincronizada com o consumo de energia. Foram obtidos valores de referência e os dados foram comparados usando testes t (p≤0,05), após agrupar os participantes por IMC e faixa etária. Os resultados revelaram discrepâncias significativas nas medidas espaço-temporais e energéticas dos adultos uruguaios ao caminhar na esteira, em comparação com a literatura. A marcha diferiu entre adultos jovens e de meia-idade em sua velocidade autoselecionada (p=0,03), comprimento da passada (p=0,01), trabalho mecânico externo (<0,001) e recuperação de energia mecânica (0,009), destacando a importância de considerar a idade em avaliações clínicas. O IMC não influenciou significativamente essas variáveis. Esses achados destacam a necessidade de ajustar as interpretações dos testes clínicos de marcha na esteira em adultos uruguaios de meia- idade (45 a 65 anos).

PURPOSE: General differences in surgeon ergonomics between laparoscopic and robotic-assisted inguinal hernia repairs (LIHR vs. RIHR) have been previously studied. However, specific differences in the ergonomics of mesh placement (MP) and mesh fixation (MF) are undetermined. Our aim was to determine if there are differences in the ergonomics of MP and MF between the surgical approaches. We hypothesize that we will identify differences, with the potential for worse ergonomics during LIHR. METHODS: Data was collected from fifteen LIHR and fifteen RIHR. All cases were elective, primary inguinal hernias completed by a fellowship-trained minimally invasive surgeon. Surface electromyography (EMG) of four upper extremity muscle groups, including the upper trapezius (UT), anterior deltoid (AD), flexor carpi radialis (FCR) and extensor digitorum (ED), was recorded bilaterally during MP and MF. Muscle activation as a percent of maximum voluntary contraction (%MVCRMS) and muscle fatigue denoted as the median frequency of muscle activations (Fmed) were calculated for each muscle. RESULTS: EMG analysis showed increased %MVCRMS in LIHR compared to RIHR cases, with significant findings in the left UT, right UT, ED, and FCR for MP and MF and the left FCR during MP. Muscle fatigue was decreased in LIHR compared to RIHR cases, with significant differences in left FCR and right ED and AD. CONCLUSION: Despite greater muscle activations during LIHR, RIHR had greater muscle fatigue. It is possible that short periods of high muscle activation are ergonomically protective during minimally invasive inguinal hernia repair. Identifying these differences may aid in development of procedure-specific interventions to improve ergonomics.

BACKGROUND: e-Cigarette (electronic cigarette) use has been a public health issue in the United States. On June 23, 2022, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued marketing denial orders (MDOs) to Juul Labs Inc for all their products currently marketed in the United States. However, one day later, on June 24, 2022, a federal appeals court granted a temporary reprieve to Juul Labs that allowed it to keep its e-cigarettes on the market. As the conversation around Juul continues to evolve, it is crucial to gain insights into the sentiments and opinions expressed by individuals on social media. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to conduct a comprehensive analysis of tweets before and after the ban on Juul, aiming to shed light on public perceptions and sentiments surrounding this contentious topic and to better understand the life cycle of public health-related policy on social media. METHODS: Natural language processing (NLP) techniques were used, including state-of-the-art BERTopic topic modeling and sentiment analysis. A total of 6023 tweets and 22,288 replies or retweets were collected from Twitter (rebranded as X in 2023) between June 2022 and October 2022. The encoded topics were used in time-trend analysis to depict the boom-and-bust cycle. Content analyses of retweets were also performed to better understand public perceptions and sentiments about this contentious topic. RESULTS: The attention surrounding the FDA's ban on Juul lasted no longer than a week on Twitter. Not only the news (ie, tweets with a YouTube link that directs to the news site) related to the announcement itself, but the surrounding discussions (eg, potential consequences of this ban or block and concerns toward kids or youth health) diminished shortly after June 23, 2022, the date when the ban was officially announced. Although a short rebound was observed on July 4, 2022, which was contributed by the suspension on the following day, discussions dried out in 2 days. Out of the top 50 most retweeted tweets, we observed that, except for neutral (23/45, 51%) sentiment that broadcasted the announcement, posters responded more negatively (19/45, 42%) to the FDA's ban. CONCLUSIONS: We observed a short life cycle for this news announcement, with a preponderance of negative sentiment toward the FDA's ban on Juul. Policy makers could use tactics such as issuing ongoing updates and reminders about the ban, highlighting its impact on public health, and actively engaging with influential social media users who can help maintain the conversation.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the expression pattern of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase class III (PIK3C3/vps34) in gastric cancer (GC) tissues and their juxtaposed normal counterparts and its correlation with the clinicopathological attributes and prognostic outlook of afflicted individuals. METHODS: Immunohistochemical (IHC) staining was used to ascertain the expression levels of PIK3C3/vps34 across 60 GC tissues juxtaposed with their normal counterparts. Statistical methodologies were used to scrutinize the correlation between PIK3C3/vps34 expression and clinicopathological features, along with prognostic implications for GC patients. RESULTS: In GC tissues, the positive expression rate of PIK3C3/vps34 was 23.3% (14/60), which contrasted sharply with the markedly elevated rate of 66.7% (40/60) observed in adjacent tissues. The positive expression proportion of PIK3C3/vps34 within GC tissues exhibited a notable decrease than in adjacent tissues (P<0.05). The expression of PIK3C3/vps34 inverse-ly correlated with tumor size, degree of tissue differentiation, depth of tumor infiltration, and incidence of lymph node metastasis (P<0.05), whereas no significant associations were found with patient sex, age, tumor location, TNM staging, or distant metastasis (P > 0.05). As the tumor diameter increases, the degree of tissue differentiation diminishes, tumor infiltration depth intensifies, lymph node metastasis emerges, the TNM stage progresses, and PIK3C3/vps34 expression level within GC tissues declines correspondingly. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis unveiled a prolonged survival duration among GC patients exhibiting heightened PIK3C3/vps34 expression than in their counterparts with diminished expression (HR=0.66, 95% CI: 0.55-0.80), demonstrating statistical significance (P<0.05). Protein interaction analysis revealed noteworthy interactions involving PIK3C3 with Beclin 1, UVRAG, and ATG14. CONCLUSION: PIK3C3/vps34 is downregulated in GC tissues, exerting a pivotal role in tumorigenesis, and is intimately linked with the prognostic trajectory of GC patients. It may serve as a significant biomarker for prognostic evaluation and a promising molecular therapeutic target for GC.

BACKGROUND: Currently, there are no reliable methods for predicting and preventing atrial fibrillation (AF) in its early stages. This study aimed to identify plasma proteins associated with AF to discover biomarkers and potential drug targets. METHODS: The UK Biobank Pharma Proteomics Project examined 2923 circulating proteins using the Olink platform, forming the basis of this prospective cohort study. The UK Biobank Pharma Proteomics Project included a randomly selected discovery cohort and the consortium-selected replication cohort. The study's end point was incident AF, identified using International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision codes. The association between plasma proteins and incident AF was evaluated using Cox proportional hazard models in both cohorts. Proteins present in both cohorts underwent Mendelian randomization analysis to delineate causal connections, utilizing cis-protein quantitative trait loci as genetic tools. The predictive efficacy of the identified proteins for AF was assessed using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve, and their druggability was explored. RESULTS: Data from 53 032 participants were included in this study. Incident AF cases were identified in the discovery cohort (1894; 5.5%) within a median follow-up of 14.5 years and in the replication cohort (451; 10.6%) within a median follow-up of 14.4 years. Twenty-one proteins linked to AF were identified in both cohorts. Specifically, COL4A1 (collagen IV α-1; odds ratio, 1.11 [95% CI, 1.04-1.19]; false discovery rate, 0.016) and RET (proto-oncogene tyrosine-protein kinase receptor Ret; odds ratio, 0.96 [95% CI, 0.94-0.98]; false discovery rate, 0.013) demonstrated a causal link with AF, and RET is druggable. COL4A1 improved the short- and long-term predictive performance of established AF models, as evidenced by significant enhancements in the area under the receiver operating characteristic, integrated discrimination improvement, and net reclassification index, all with P values below 0.05. CONCLUSIONS: COL4A1 and RET are associated with the development of AF. RET is identified as a potential drug target for AF prevention, while COL4A1 serves as a biomarker for AF prediction. Future studies are needed to evaluate the effectiveness of targeting these proteins to reduce AF risk.

BACKGROUND: Nonfunctioning pituitary adenomas (NFPAs) are a significant subtype of pituitary tumors, accounting for 30% of all pituitary tumors and 10-20% of intracranial tumors. The primary treatment for NFPAs is resection, but complete resection is often challenging due to the tumor's proximity to critical structures, leading to frequent recurrences. Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) has emerged as a viable treatment option for recurrent or residual NFPAs, but its long-term efficacy and safety profile require further investigation. METHODS: This systematic review followed PRISMA guidelines and included studies published up to February 2024. We searched MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane databases for studies evaluating SRS for recurrent/residual NFPAs. Inclusion criteria focused on studies reporting outcomes and complications of SRS, while exclusion criteria omitted case reports, case series, and non-English studies. Data extracted included demographic details, dosimetry parameters, and follow-up durations. The risk of bias was assessed using the ROBINS-I tool, and statistical analyses were performed using single-arm meta-analyses. RESULTS: A total of 24 studies involving 3,781 patients were included. The mean follow-up duration was 60 months. Tumor control was achieved in approximately 92.3% of patients. The risk of developing hypopituitarism post-SRS was 13.62%, while the risk for panhypopituitarism was 2.55%. New visual field deficits occurred in 3.94% of patients. Cranial nerve deficits were rare, with event rates below 1% for CN III, CN V, and CN VI. CONCLUSION: SRS is effective in managing recurrent or residual NFPAs, achieving high tumor control rates. However, the risk of hypopituitarism remains a significant concern, necessitating regular endocrinological monitoring. While generally safe, the potential for new visual field deficits and other cranial nerve deficits must be considered. SRS remains a valuable treatment option, but clinicians should be aware of its potential complications.

Fruit and vegetable intake (FVI), moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), and sleep duration are each independently associated with cancer-related and general health outcomes among cancer survivors. Past research suggests that health behaviors cluster among cancer survivors, with caregivers demonstrating similar patterns. This analysis examined co-occurrence of FVI, MVPA, and sleep duration among cancer survivors and informal cancer caregivers and identified sociodemographic and clinical correlates of health behavior engagement. Using data from the Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS), an exploratory latent profile analysis (LPA) was conducted among those self-reporting a history of cancer or identifying as a cancer caregiver. The LPA model was fit with daily self-reported FVI (cups/d), MPVA (minutes/d) and sleep duration (hours/d). Multinomial logistic regression models were used to predict profile membership based on sociodemographic and clinical characteristics. Four health behavior profiles were identified (Least Engaged-No MVPA, Least Engaged-Low MVPA, Moderately Engaged, and Highly Engaged). The largest profile membership was Least Engaged-No MVPA, capturing 37% of the sample. Profiles were most distinguished by MVPA, with the lowest variance in sleep duration. Participants reporting higher FVI also often reported greater MVPA and longer sleep duration. Profile membership was significantly associated with age, relationship status, education, income, rurality, alcohol use, self-efficacy, psychological distress, BMI, and cancer type. This study identified four health behaviors patterns and sociodemographic correlates that distinguished those patterns among cancer survivors and caregivers drawn from a nationally representative sample. Results may help identify for whom health behavior interventions could be of greatest benefit.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) has become a pivotal element in health care, leading to significant advancements across various medical domains, including palliative care and hospice services. These services focus on improving the quality of life for patients with life-limiting illnesses, and AI's ability to process complex datasets can enhance decision-making and personalize care in these sensitive settings. However, incorporating AI into palliative and hospice care requires careful examination to ensure it reflects the multifaceted nature of these settings. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aims to systematically map the landscape of AI in palliative care and hospice settings, focusing on the data diversity and model robustness. The goal is to understand AI's role, its clinical integration, and the transparency of its development, ultimately providing a foundation for developing AI applications that adhere to established ethical guidelines and principles. METHODS: Our scoping review involves six stages: (1) identifying the research question; (2) identifying relevant studies; (3) study selection; (4) charting the data; (5) collating, summarizing, and reporting the results; and (6) consulting with stakeholders. Searches were conducted across databases including MEDLINE through PubMed, Embase.com, IEEE Xplore, ClinicalTrials.gov, and Web of Science Core Collection, covering studies from the inception of each database up to November 1, 2023. We used a comprehensive set of search terms to capture relevant studies, and non-English records were excluded if their abstracts were not in English. Data extraction will follow a systematic approach, and stakeholder consultations will refine the findings. RESULTS: The electronic database searches conducted in November 2023 resulted in 4614 studies. After removing duplicates, 330 studies were selected for full-text review to determine their eligibility based on predefined criteria. The extracted data will be organized into a table to aid in crafting a narrative summary. The review is expected to be completed by May 2025. CONCLUSIONS: This scoping review will advance the understanding of AI in palliative care and hospice, focusing on data diversity and model robustness. It will identify gaps and guide future research, contributing to the development of ethically responsible and effective AI applications in these settings. BACKGROUND: While the evidence base on web-based cancer misinformation continues to develop, relatively little is known about the extent of such information on the world's largest e-commerce website, Amazon. Multiple media reports indicate that Amazon may host on its platform questionable cancer-related products for sale, such as books on purported cancer cures. This context suggests an urgent need to evaluate Amazon.com for cancer misinformation. OBJECTIVE: This study sought to (1) examine to what extent are misleading cancer cure books for sale on Amazon.com and (2) determine how cancer cure books on Amazon.com provide misleading cancer information. METHODS: We searched "cancer cure" on Amazon.com and retrieved the top 1000 English-language book search results. We reviewed the books' descriptions and titles to determine whether the books provided misleading cancer cure or treatment information. We considered a book to be misleading if it suggested scientifically unsupported cancer treatment approaches to cure or meaningfully treat cancer. Among books coded as misleading, we conducted an inductive latent thematic analysis to determine the informational value the books sought to offer. RESULTS: Nearly half (494/1000, 49.4%) of the sampled "cancer cure" books for sale on Amazon.com appeared to contain misleading cancer treatment and cure information. Overall, 17 (51.5%) out of 33 Amazon.com results pages had 50% or more of the books coded as misleading. The first search result page had the highest percentage of misleading books (23/33, 69.7%). Misleading books (n=494) contained eight themes: (1) claims of efficacious cancer cure strategies (n=451, 91.3%), (2) oversimplifying cancer and cancer treatment (n=194, 39.3%), (3) falsely justifying ineffective treatments as science based (n=189, 38.3%), (4) discrediting conventional cancer treatments (n=169, 34.2%), (5) finding the true cause of cancer (n=133, 26.9%), (6) homogenizing cancer (n=132, 26.7%), (7) discovery of new cancer treatments (n=119, 24.1%), and (8) cancer cure suppression (n=82, 16.6%). CONCLUSIONS: The results demonstrate that misleading cancer cure books are for sale, visible, and prevalent on Amazon.com, with prominence in initial search hits. These misleading books for sale on Amazon can be conceived of as forming part of a wider, cross-platform, web-based information environment in which misleading cancer cures are often given prominence. Our results suggest that greater enforcement is needed from Amazon and that cancer-focused organizations should engage in preemptive misinformation debunking.

INTRODUCTION: The Swedish Sleep Apnea Registry (SESAR) collects clinical data from individual obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients since 2010. SESAR has recently been integrated with additional national healthcare data. The current analysis presents the SESAR structure and representative clinical data of a national sleep apnea cohort. METHODS: Clinical data from unselected patients with a diagnosis of OSA are submitted to the SESAR registry. 48 sleep centers report data from diagnosis, treatment starts with Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP), oral devices (OD), and Upper Airway Surgery (UAS). Data from follow-up are included. SESAR is linked to mandatory national healthcare data (mortality, comorbidities, procedures, prescriptions) and diagnosis-specific quality registries (e.g. stroke, heart failure, diabetes) within the DISCOVERY project. RESULTS: 83,404 OSA patients have been reported during the diagnostic workup (age 55.4 ± 14.1 years, BMI 30.8 ± 6.5 kg/m2, AHI 25.8 ± 21.6n/h, respectively). At least one cardiometabolic and respiratory comorbidity is recognized in 57 % of female and 53 % of male OSA patients with a linear increase across OSA severity. In 54,468, 7,797, and 390 patients, start of CPAP, OD or UAS treatment is reported, respectively. OD patients have 4 units lower BMI and 10 units lower AHI compared to patients started on CPAP. UAS patients are characterized by 10 years lower age. The degree of daytime sleepiness is comparable between treatment groups with mean Epworth Sleepiness Scale Scores between 9 and 10. CONCLUSION: SESAR is introduced as a large national registry of OSA patients. SESAR provides a useful tool to highlight OSA management and to perform relevant outcome research.

Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and the xylene isomers (m, p, and o-xylene) (BTEX) are known for their harmful effects on human health and have been extensively studied across various environmental matrices. However, quantifying BTEX in exhaust gases poses challenges due to the complexity of the matrices. In this study, we investigated a method development strategy involving solid-phase microextraction (SPME) and gas chromatography coupled with a dielectric barrier discharge ionization Detector (BID) for quantifying BTEX emitted from internal combustion engines operating at idle. Sampling was conducted using 1.0 L Tedlar bags, followed by withdrawal of aliquots and dilution with atmospheric air using a novel device (graduated vial) designed for gaseous samples. The SPME-GC-BID method was developed and validated for the conditions: BTEX extraction in CAR/PDMS 75 µm fiber at a contact time of 5.0 min at a temperature of 27 °C, followed by GC-BID analysis. Method validation to ensure the reliability of quantitative results used the merit figures e.g., limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ), precision, and accuracy (recovery). LOD varied from 0.194 to 0.340 mg m-3, LOQ varied from 0.587 to 1.03 mg m-3, precision ranged from 1.47 to 7.14 %, and recovery varied from 82.34 to 109.5 %. BTEX concentration in vehicle exhaust varied from 3.40 to 16.4 mg m-3. The results showed, concerning the figures of merit analyzed, that the SPME-GC-BID method provides good sensibility, precision, and accuracy for evaluating the presence of BTEX in the exhaust of internal combustion engines, contributing to the understanding of health risks associated with vehicle emissions.

INTRODUCTION: Immunogenic cell death (ICD) is a unique cell death triggered by chemotherapy. However, studies elucidating the potential therapeutic role of ICD and the underlying mechanism in diabetic nephropathy (DN) are limited. METHODS: WGCNA was conducted on the human kidney biopsy data linked to DN, analyzing gene sets associated with ICD. Gene Set Enrichment Analysis and Gene Set Variation Analysis were utilized to examine the discrepancy in biological function. We used Gene Ontology, the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes, and the GeneMANIA database to investigate the function of the signature genes. An analysis using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) was conducted to validate the diagnostic value of hub genes. Additionally, immune infiltration-related analyses were also performed. In conclusion, we examined the association between the glomerular filtration rate, serum creatinine, and hub genes. Hub genes were validated by immunohistochemistry using db/db mice kidneys. RESULTS: WGCNA revealed that the targets in the turquoise unit (1674 genes) exhibited the highest positive correlation with ICD. Furthermore, 4222 statistically significant DEGs were identified when comparing the DN and healthy control groups. Significantly, the KEGG pathway enrichment analysis indicated a connection between ICD and the nuclear factor-kappa B signaling pathway and the synthesis of cytokines (tumor necrosis factor superfamily). ROC analysis revealed that 16 hub genes exhibited strong discriminatory potential as biomarkers for DN. Therefore, immunohistochemical validation, with the potential involvement of chemokines (CCL11, CCR2, CCR7, CX3CR1, CXCL10, CXCL12, and CXCR5) and immune cells (CD3G, CD5, and CD247) may be crucial for the diagnosis and therapy of DN. CONCLUSIONS: DKK3, NR4A1, NR4A2, VEGFA, and DUSP1 may be associated with the development of DN. The pathogenesis of DN may specifically involve chemokines (CCL11, CCR2, CCR7, CX3CR1, CXCL10, CXCL12, and CXCR5) and immune cells (CD3G, CD5, and CD247), with LCP2 playing a significant role.
