RESUMO

Background: The operation rate for different involved arteries and the manifestation of vessel involvement of patients with Takayasu arteritis undergoing open or endovascular operations remain unclear. We aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics, vessel involvement, angiographic classification and operations information in a large cohort of patients with Takayasu arteritis undergoing open or endovascular operations at a single centre in China. Methods: From January 2017 to October 2022, a total of 153 consecutive patients undergoing open or endovascular operations were recruited from the Department of Vascular Surgery of Beijing Hospital. The demographic characteristics, clinical presentations, pattern of vascular involvement and operation information were collected and analysed. Results: The majority of patients were female (128/153, 83.7%). The most common vascular finding was hypertension (66.7%). The subclavian (74.2%), carotid (70.1%) and renal (68.9%) arteries were the most commonly involved arteries. Type V (40.5%) was the most common angiographic classification pattern. A total of 296 open or endovascular operations were performed, including 73 percutaneous transluminal angioplasties (PTAs), 50 stent placements and 173 bypass graft operations. Patients with renal (83.3%) or carotid (65.2%) artery involvement had markedly higher rates of undergoing operations. Conclusions: The subclavian and carotid arteries, as well as the type V (40.5%) pattern, exhibited the highest frequency of involvement among patients with Takayasu arteritis who underwent open or endovascular operations. Variations in angiographic features can result in differences in clinical manifestations and significantly impact the possibility and modality of operations.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Immunocompromised patients face higher risks of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 infection and co-infections, leading to a possibility of high disease severity and poor outcomes. Conversely, immunosuppression can mitigate the excessive inflammatory response induced by the virus, potentially reducing disease severity. This study aims to investigate the prognostic differences and early inflammatory response characteristics in various types of immunocompromised patients with severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) admitted to intensive care unit (ICU), summarize their clinical features, and explore potential mechanisms. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on critically ill COVID-19 patients admitted to the ICU of 59 medical centers in mainland China during the Omicron outbreak from November 2022 to February 2023. Patients were categorized into two groups based on their immunosuppression status: immunocompromised and immunocompetent. Immunocompromised patients were further subdivided by etiology into cancer patients, solid organ transplant (SOT) patients, and other immunocompromised groups, with immunocompetent patients serving as controls. The mortality rates, respiratory support, complications, and early inflammatory cytokine dynamics upon ICU admission among different populations were analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 2030 critically ill COVID-19 patients admitted to ICU were included, with 242 in the immunocompromised group and 1788 in the immunocompetent group. Cancer patients had a higher median age of 69 years (IQR 59, 77), while SOT patients were generally younger and had less severe illness upon ICU admission, with a median APACHE II score of 12.0 (IQR 8.0, 20.0). Cancer patients had a twofold increased risk of death (OR = 2.02, 95% CI 1.18-3.46, P = 0.010) compared to immunocompetent patients. SOT and cancer patients exhibited higher C-reactive protein and serum ferritin levels than the immunocompetent group in their early days of ICU admission. The CD8+ T cells dynamics were inversely correlated in cancer and SOT patients, with Interleukin-6 levels consistently lower in the SOT group compared to both immunocompetent and cancer patients. CONCLUSION: Critically ill COVID-19 patients admitted to the ICU exhibit distinct clinical outcomes based on their immunosuppression status, with cancer patients facing the highest mortality rate due to variations in inflammatory responses linked to their immunosuppression mechanisms. Monitoring dynamic changes in inflammatory markers and immune cells, particularly CD8+ T lymphocytes and IL-6, may offer valuable prognostic insights for these patients.

RESUMO

Pheochromocytomas and sympathetic paragangliomas (PPGL) are rare neuroendocrine tumors originating from chromaffin tissue of the adrenal medulla and extra-adrenal sympathetic paraganglia. Historically, many of these tumors were diagnosed postmortem, earning pheochromocytomas the moniker "great mimic" due to their diverse clinical manifestations that can resemble various other conditions. Over time, the clinical presentation of PPGL has evolved, with a shift from symptomatic or postmortem diagnoses to more frequent incidental discoveries or diagnoses through screening, with postmortem identification now being rare. The development of a clinical scoring system has improved the identification of patients at increased risk for PPGL. Notably, the proportion of PPGL patients with normal blood pressure ranges from 15 % to 40 %, varying based on the clinical context. Despite the tumor's reputation, PPGL is an exceedingly rare cause of resistant hypertension. Management of a pheochromocytoma crisis has advanced, with several classes of drugs available for treatment. However, PPGL during pregnancy remains a significant concern, associated with substantial maternal and fetal mortality rates. Additionally, PPGL can present as rare disorders, including catecholamine-induced cardiomyopathy, Cushing syndrome, and urinary bladder PGL. Given these varied presentations, heightened awareness and prompt recognition of PPGL are crucial for timely diagnosis and treatment, ultimately improving patient outcomes. In this article, we offer an in-depth analysis of the diverse clinical presentations of PPGL, highlighting their complexity and the associated diagnostic and treatment strategies.

RESUMO

Breast cancer is rare in men and is managed using strategies similar to those for breast cancer in women. This study retrospectively analyzed the clinicopathological features, treatment, and survival of male breast cancer (MBC). A total of 66 patients with MBC admitted into Xijing Hospital from August 2006 to March 2024 were reviewed. Data were collected from patients' hospital records and breast cancer database of Xijing Hospital. The incidence of MBC tended to increase from 2018, with affected individuals being older than those with female breast cancer (FBC). The most common histological type of MBC was invasive carcinoma, with positive hormone receptor status. A total of 62 (93.9%) patients with MBC underwent modified radical mastectomy. Chemotherapy was administered to 39 (59.1%) patients, while endocrine therapy was received by 14 patients (21.2%) and radiotherapy by nine patients (13.6%). Survival analysis indicated that the median overall survival (OS) of patients with MBC was 46.7 months (0.9-184.8 months). As of the latest data, 58 patients (87.9%) with MBC are alive. Factors significantly associated with survival included age (χ2 = 3.856, p = .050), estrogen receptor (χ2 = 10.427, p = .005), molecular types (χ2 = 10.641, p = .031), P63 (χ2 = 2.631, p < .001), and endocrine therapy (χ2 = 31.167, p < .001). These findings provide valuable insights into MBC within the Chinese population and serve as a reference for the standard treatment of MBC.

RESUMO

The mulch film (MF) management model of the agricultural field affects the physical and chemical properties of soil (PCPS) and the structure of the microorganism community; however, studies on the relationship between the rhizosphere microorganism community structure and the thickness of MF are still limited. To understand the interactions among the MF thickness, PCPS, and rhizosphere microorganism, a study was conducted by using an integrated metagenomic strategy, where tobacco rhizosphere soil was treated with four commonly representative and used thicknesses of MFs (0.004, 0.006, 0.008, and 0.010 mm) in Yunnan laterite. The results showed that agronomic traits such as the tobacco plant height (TPH), leaf number (LN), fresh leaf weight (FLW), and dry leaf weight (DLW) were significantly (p < 0.01) improved in the field mulched with the thickest film (0.010 mm) compared with the exposed field (CK), and there was a 6.81 and 5.54% increase in the FLW and TPH, separately. The correlation analyses revealed a significant positive correlation of the MF thickness with the soil water content (SWC), soil organic matter (SOM), total nitrogen (TN), available nitrogen (AN), total phosphorus (TP), and available phosphorus (AP; all p < 0.01), while the MF thickness was negatively correlated with the soil temperature (ST; p < 0.01). In addition, the community structure of the rhizosphere soil bacteria was significantly changed overall by the MF thickness, which also interfered with the function of the rhizosphere soil bacteria. The correlation analyses also showed that the abundance of Bradyrhizobium and Nitrospira was positively correlated with the MF thickness, while the abundance of Sphinsinomonas and Massilia was negatively correlated with it. This indicated that with the increase of the MF thickness, the ability of the rhizosphere soil to utilize N and remove harmful molecules was strengthened, while the capacity of the rhizosphere soil to degrade pollutants was greatly reduced. These findings provide additional insights into the potential risks of the application of different thicknesses of MFs, particularly concerning the PCPS and soil microbial communities.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Obesity represents a global health crisis and results from complex interactions between psychological, environmental, and genetic factors. Any therapeutic approach should consider the social, personal, and psychological characteristics of the obese subject, as well as possible medical complications. This study investigates sex differences in candidates for bariatric surgery. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study including subjects who underwent psychiatric pre-surgical evaluation. The evaluation comprised a clinical interview and the administration of self-report questionnaires that assessed socio-demographic and clinical aspects. Descriptive and bivariate analyses and a multivariate logistic regression model were performed to evaluate variables significantly associated with sex in bariatric surgery candidates. RESULTS: The sample consisted of 173 subjects, of which 71.1% were women. Significant differences between men and women were detected in employment status, birth nationality, psychopathological history, organic comorbidities, and BMI value. There were no significant differences in clinical aspects. CONCLUSION: Obesity has a significant impact on global health. Women and men who are considering bariatric surgery represent two different populations in demographic, personal, and social characteristics. Therefore, a sex-tailored approach is essential to guarantee adequate support in the management of the various aspects of obesity.

RESUMO

This review explores the Neapolitan pizza baking process in a traditional wood-fired oven, employing visual color analysis and IR thermal scanning to detail heat exchange mechanisms. During cooking, the oven floor temperature in the pizza area decreased proportionally to the pizza's mass, whereas the free area maintained a constant temperature of 439 ± 3°C. An IR thermal camera indicated that the oven dome temperature reached approximately 480°C with a weak flame and 500°C with a strong flame. The pizza's bottom achieved a maximum temperature of 100 ± 9°C, facilitated by the Pizzaiolo's skill in lifting and rotating the pizza for uniform cooking. Top temperatures varied: up to 180°C for white pizza and 84°C and 67°C for tomato and Margherita pizzas, respectively. IRIS electronic eye analysis revealed more browning and blackening on the pizza's top compared to its bottom, with peaks of about 26% and 8% for white pizza, respectively. Rapid baking is pivotal in Neapolitan pizza-making, necessitating precise heat and mass transfer management to influence sensory attributes. European Commission Regulation No. 97/2010 mandates wood-fired ovens for true Neapolitan pizza, but environmental concerns prompted the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana to certify gas or electric ovens when wood-fired ovens are impractical. Operating costs vary: liquefied petroleum gas ovens are the costliest, with costs ranging from €5.38 to €6.19/h, whereas natural gas and electric ovens have operating costs between €2.70 and €4.10/h. At €0.15/kg, firewood is the most economical, supporting traditionalist views. However, natural gas and electric ovens present competitive costs under stringent antipollution laws, making them viable alternatives.

RESUMO

A novel coccus Thiothrix-related polyphosphate-accumulating organism (PAO) was enriched in an acetate-fed enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) system. High EBPR performance was achieved for an extended period (>100 days). A high-quality draft genome (completeness 97.2 %, contamination 3.26 %) was retrieved, representing a novel Thiothrix species (with similarity<93.2 % to known Thiothrix species), and was denoted as 'Candidatus Thiothrix phosphatis SCUT-1'. Its acetate uptake rate (6.20 mmol C/g VSS/h) surpassed most Ca. Accumulibacter and known glycogen-accumulating organisms (GAOs), conferring their predominance in the acetate-fed system. Metatranscriptomic analysis suggested that Ca. Thiothrix phosphatis SCUT-1 employed both low- and high-affinity pathways for acetate activation, and both the conventional (PhaABC) pathway and the fatty acid ß-oxidation pathway for PHA synthesis; additionally, a much more efficient FAD-dependent malate: quinone oxidoreductase (MQO) were encoded and employed than the traditional malate dehydrogenase (MDH) to oxidize malate to oxaloacetate in the TCA and glyoxylate cycle, collectively contributing to a higher acetate utilization and processing rate of this microorganism. Batch tests further demonstrated the versatile ability of this PAO in using VFA (acetate, propionate, and butyrate), lactate, amino acids (aspartate and glutamate), and glucose as carbon sources for EBPR, showing a partially overlapped but unique ecological niche of this microorganism comparing to Ca. Accumulibacter and known GAOs. A metabolic model was built for Ca. Thiothrix phosphatis SCUT-1 using the above-mentioned carbon sources for EBPR. Overall, this study represents the first comprehensive characterization of the physiology and metabolic characteristics of representative coccus Thiothrix-related PAOs, which are expected to provide new insights into PAO microbiology in EBPR systems.

RESUMO

High arsenic (As), fluoride (F-), and microbial pathogens coexist in semiarid conditions afflicting > 240 million people worldwide including Pakistan. Groundwater quality has declined due to geogenic and manmade activities providing suitable ground for ubiquity, bioavailability, and toxicity of contaminants. We tested the health hazard, distribution, and apportionment of As, F-, and microbes in groundwater around coal mines in Quetta, Pakistan. The range of As, and F- concentrations in groundwater were 0.2-16.6 µg/L, 0.4-18.5 mg/L. Both, As and F- correlate with high HCO3-, pH, Na+, SO42-, Fe, and Mn, and negatively with Ca2+ water. The coalfield showed many folds higher As 15.8-28.5 µg/L, and F- 10.8-34.5 mg/L compared to groundwater-wells. Geochemical phases revealed saturation of groundwater with calcite, dolomite, fluorite, gypsum, and undersaturation with halite-mirabilite, and arsenopyrite minerals. The positive matrix factorization (PMF) model assessed five-factor solutions: geogenic, industrial, coal mining, sulfide & fluoride-bearing mineral-dissolution, and agriculture pollution delivered As, F-, and microbial contamination. About 24.6 % and 64.4 % of groundwater samples exceeded the WHO guidelines of As 10 µg/L, F- 1.5 mg/L. The carcinogenicity, and non-carcinogenicity of As, and F- were higher in children than adults. Therefore, health hazards in children are of great concern in achieving sustainable management goals.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Given the pivotal role of immune and inflammatory responses in tumor patients, the present study aimed to explore alterations and the clinical value of peripheral lymphocyte subsets and inflammatory factors in pheochromocytomas/paragangliomas (PPGLs). METHODS: The clinical data of 327 patients, including 102 patients with metastatic PPGLs, were retrospectively analysed. Peripheral lymphocyte subsets were determined by flow cytometry. Relationships between immune and inflammatory parameters and clinicopathological characteristics were evaluated by intergroup comparisons and correlation analyses. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were employed to identify metastatic indicators. The corresponding nomogram was constructed and evaluated for discrimination and calibration. RESULTS: The median age at diagnosis was 45.0 years, and duration of follow-up was 3.0 years. Compared with those in younger patients (<45.0 years), most lymphocyte subsets were significantly reduced in older patients (≥45 years) (P<0.05). The count of lymphocytes, CD3+T cells and CD4+T cells were negatively correlated with 24h-urinary epinephrine and plasma metanephrine levels (R=-0.2∼-0.1, P<0.05). In addition, patients with lymph node (n=37) or bone metastases (n=41) had a lower percentage of CD4+T cells (P<0.05). Multivariate analysis revealed that CD3+T cell≥1446.50/µl, CD4+T cell%<39.95%, CD8+T cell%<24.95%, CD4+/CD8+T cell ratio<2.88, B cell%≥8.65%, TNF-alpha<12.45pg/ml, IL8<30.50pg/ml and PLT≥269.50*109/L were significant indicators of metastatic PPGLs. The area under the curve (AUC) of the nomogram was 0.800 (95% CI: 0.736-0.865). CONCLUSIONS: Immunesenescence, characterized by immune dysfunction with aging, was observed in PPGLs. Higher epinephrine and metanephrine levels might impair host's immune response. Monitoring changes in peripheral lymphocyte subsets and serum cytokines could indicate patients' conditions, especially the occurrence of metastasis.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) has an incidence of 6-7 per 100,000 person-years. Despite advancements in treatment, 26% of patients die, and 19% remain dependent post-hemorrhage. Long-term neuropsychological sequelae affect about half of the survivors, significantly impacting their quality of life. This study aims to assess aSAH characteristics and identify predictive factors of clinical outcomes in young patients. METHODS: A retrospective study analyzed 657 aSAH patients treated at two South Korean medical centers from January 2011 to December 2023. Data on demographics, comorbidities, smoking history, clinical grades, aneurysm size and location, and outcomes were collected. Outcomes were classified using the modified Rankin Scale (mRS), with scores ≤2 indicating good outcomes. RESULTS: The cohort included 233 men and 424 women (male-to-female ratio 1:1.8). Most patients were middle-aged (74.4%), followed by young (16.7%) and old (8.8%) groups. Young patients exhibited male predominance (56.8%), lower hypertension (12.7%) and diabetes (1.8%) rates, and higher smoking rates (39.6%). Older patients had higher hypertension (44.6%) and diabetes (23.3%) rates, and were predominantly female (69.1%). Aneurysms in young patients were smaller (p=0.04). Multivariate analysis identified poor Hunt-Hess grade, permanent cerebral infarction, and aneurysmal recurrence or rebleeding as predictors of poor outcomes in young patients. Middle-aged patients had additional predictors, including diabetes and hydrocephalus. In older patients, only poor Hunt-Hess grade was significant. CONCLUSION: Young aSAH patients exhibit distinct characteristics and prognostic factors compared to older patients. Despite higher post-operative complications, young patients generally have better outcomes, emphasizing the need for age-specific management strategies in aSAH.

RESUMO

Objective: The goal of this study is to assess the clinical attributes exhibited by patients aged 85 years and older who present different manifestations of COVID-19, and to examine the factors influencing the classification of the disease severity. Method: This retrospective study was conducted at a single center, encompassing an analysis of clinical data obtained from patients with COVID-19 admitted to a general geriatric hospital in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China, during the period from December 20, 2022, to February 1, 2023. The study focused on 91 eligible patients whose disease severity was compared based on the imaging findings. Results: A total of 91 patients aged 85 years and older, with a median age of 92, including 46 males, 10 exhibiting mild symptoms, 48 moderate cases, and 33 severe cases met the inclusion criteria. Notably, disease severity displayed a significant correlation with age (p < 0.011). All patients presented with complicated chronic underlying conditions and a history of prolonged medication use. Rheumatic immune diseases (p = 0.040) and endocrine medications, primarily hypoglycemic agents (p = 0.034), exhibited statistical significance. Additionally, markers such as lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) (p = 0.030), interleukin 6 (IL-6) (p = 0.014), and D-dimer (p = 0.007) revealed significant associations with disease severity. Chest computed tomography scans predominantly revealed inflammatory features (n = 81, 89.0%). Notably, patients classified as having mild or moderate conditions exhibited eventual improvement, while 13 patients (39.4%) among the severe cases succumbed to the disease. Conclusion: The classification of disease among patients aged 85 years or older old is correlated with advanced age, concurrent rheumatic immune diseases, and prolonged administration of endocrine medications. Furthermore, patients with elevated levels of LDH, IL-6, and D-dimer demonstrated a higher propensity for developing severe diseases.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Psychological well-being (PWB) is an important component of positive mental health (PMH) and an asset for population health. This study examined correlates of PWB among community-dwelling adults (18+ years) in the 10 Canadian provinces. METHODS: Using data from the 2019 Canadian Community Health Survey Rapid Response on PMH, we conducted linear regression analyses with sociodemographic, mental health, physical health and substance use variables as predictors of PWB. PWB was measured using six questions from the Mental Health Continuum-Short Form, which asked about feelings of self-acceptance, personal growth, environmental mastery, autonomy, positive relations and purpose in life during the past month. RESULTS: In unadjusted and adjusted analyses, older age, being married or in a commonlaw relationship and having a BMI in the overweight category (25.00-29.99) were associated with higher PWB, while reporting a mood disorder, anxiety disorder, high perceived life stress, engaging in heavy episodic drinking and frequent cannabis use were associated with lower PWB. Sex, having children living at home, immigrant status, racialized group membership, educational attainment, household income tertile, having a BMI in the obese category (≥30.00), major chronic disease and smoking status were not significantly associated with PWB. CONCLUSION: This research identifies sociodemographic, mental health, physical health and substance use factors associated with PWB among adults in Canada. These findings highlight groups and characteristics that could be the focus of future research to promote PMH.

RESUMO

The amount of total polyphenol content (TPC) in the grain could provide insights into the conditions during maturation and might also serve as an indicator of the grain's ability to germinate in the malting process or as seeds in the field. Varieties with higher natural TPC content might exhibit better germination parameters both in the field and in the malt house. This study investigates the relationship between TPC and seed germination characteristics i.e. seed vigour in four spring barley varieties over two years, considering diverse environmental conditions and exposure to drought conditions. The evaluation of seed germination characteristics in barley, with a focus on the root length and average diameter under drought conditions (-0.5 MPa) and suboptimal temperature (10 °C), was conducted. Drought conditions were induced using polyethylene glycol (PEG 6000). After durations of seven and fourteen days, the germinated seeds from the Petri dishes were scanned and subjected to analysis using WinRHIZO software following the metrics: Len 7, Len 14 (root length after seven and fourteen days in cm) and AvgD 7, AvgD 14 (root diameter after seven and fourteen days in mm). The findings support our initial hypothesis, indicating a variety-specific relationship between seed germination characteristics and increased TPC, where higher germination parameters might be associated with elevated TPC levels in some barley varieties.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical characteristics and endolymphatic hydrops (ELH) Manifestations in patients with delayed Ménière's disease (DMD) compared to classic Ménière's disease (CMD). METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted involving 523 patients diagnosed with MD. Clinical data, inner ear function, and ELH characteristics were analyzed and compared between CMD and DMD groups. Assessments included audiometry, VEMP, and MRI. RESULTS: DMD prevalence was 6.1%. Bilateral MD was significantly more common in DMD (34.4% vs. 14.5%, P = 0.003). DMD patients had more severe hearing loss in the first involved ear and more deteriorated VEMP in the contralateral ear (P < 0.05). ELH was present in 100% of affected ears, with a higher contralateral ELH proportion in DMD (34.4% vs. 15.0%, P = 0.005). CONCLUSIONS: DMD patients exhibit a higher prevalence of bilateral MD, more severe hearing loss, and greater contralateral ELH compared to CMD patients. Both subtypes share similar ELH characteristics, suggesting common underlying mechanisms.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To investigate factors influencing long-term utilization and disposal patterns of cryopreserved semen straws in oncological patients. METHODS: This retrospective study included all men who cryopreserved semen due to cancer between October 1993 and December 2021. To assess non-used cryopreserved sperm straws, we investigated the following parameters: cryopreserved semen and usage for fertility treatments versus disposal, summarized by total non-used cases. A Kaplan-Meier curve was used to describe last usage and disposal requests over a 15-year analysis. A Log-rank test was applied to compare between age and paternal status categories. RESULTS: The cohort consisted of 445 patients. Of these, 55 patients utilized thawed semen for fertility treatments, and 65 opted for disposals, leaving 325 patients who neither used nor disposed of their cryopreserved straws. Our findings revealed a distinct pattern based on age, with the youngest age group (< 25 years) exhibiting significantly lower utilization and disposal rates compared to older patient groups. Additionally, men without children exhibited significantly fewer disposal requests compared to fathers. The median cryopreserved straws were 10 (interquartile range, 6 to 17), while the median used straws were only 2 (interquartile range, 2 to 6). DISCUSSION: Our study brings attention to the additional and needless burden of preservation from both patient and preserved straw perspectives. Implementing a policy based on a cost-effective approach, incorporating time and straw limits, and considering demographic characteristics, could enhance efficiency and necessitate patient consent before preservation.

RESUMO

Ficus carica (F. carica), commonly referred to as the fig tree, has received considerable attention due to its delectable and nutritious fruits. F. carica polysaccharides (FPs) are one of the key bioactive constituents of F. carica, demonstrating various biological activities such as antioxidative, immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and antitumor effects, among others. Nevertheless, the extraction and purification techniques for FPs still require innovations to address their structural characteristics in order to elucidate the intricate mechanisms affecting their biological activities. Given this, the current review systematically summarizes the recent advancements in FPs, covering extraction, purification, structural characteristics, bioactivities, structure-activity relationships (SARs), current applications, challenges and future prospects. The composition of FPs predominantly includes Glu, Gal, and Rha, with a broad molecular weight distribution (ranging from 21.9 kDa to 6890 kDa). The SARs analysis suggests that the bioactivities of FPs are closely linked to their monosaccharide composition, molecular weight, uronic acid content, and configuration characteristics, underscoring the significant role of FPs in driving the development of novel bioactive compounds in the health, food, and medical sectors. In conclusion, this review would contribute the valuable research insights and provide the updated information to foster the advancement of FPs for diverse therapeutic and industrial applications.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study investigated fundamental demographic variables within the Taiwan Biobank (TWBB) and compared them with national demographic statistics. Additionally, a matched cohort analysis compared TWBB participants with nonparticipants to uncover disparities in sociodemographic and clinical characteristics. METHODS: A total of 128,663 individuals aged 30 to 70 without cancer were recruited within the TWBB, and 514,652 nonparticipants matched by age and sex were randomly selected from the National Health Insurance claims database. Sociodemographic variables, healthcare utilization metrics, underlying medical conditions, and subsequent mortality and cancer risk were analyzed. RESULTS: TWBB participants were more likely to be female, older, married, higher educated, with higher incomes, and urban residency. Healthcare utilization metrics showed minimal differences. Pre-cohort entry, TWBB participants had a higher prevalence of certain medical conditions, such as peptic ulcer disease, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, and uterine leiomyoma in females. During follow-up periods, elevated mortality rates were observed among TWBB participants but decreased cancer risk. CONCLUSION: The TWBB cohort exhibits disparities in sociodemographic and health-related attributes compared to the general population, comprising older, females, married, higher educated, higher income, and predominantly in urban areas. While mortality rates are slightly elevated within the TWBB cohort, cancer incidence rates are lower. Despite limitations in representativeness, the TWBB's size and exposure measures offer valuable insights into associations between exposures and health conditions.
