Ovariohysterectomy is a common surgical procedure in pet rabbits and one of its potential complications is postoperative gastrointestinal stasis, possibly exacerbated by prolonged surgery time. The objective of this prospective clinical study was to compare two techniques for surgical haemostasis with respect to procedural duration, postoperative pain, and return of gastrointestinal function, in 22 female rabbits undergoing ovariohysterectomy. Rabbits were assigned to one of two groups: conventional vessel ligation (CVL) and haemostasis with a vessel sealing device (VSD). The outcome variables for comparison between the two groups, recorded at 60-, 120-, 180-, and 360-minutes post anaesthesia, were duration of anaesthesia and surgery, postoperative Rabbit Grimace Scale scores, and measured food intake and faecal output. The vessel sealing device caused no appreciable blood loss. The duration of both surgery and anaesthesia was shorter in group VSD (20 ± 4 and 31 ± 6 minutes, respectively) than in group CVL (43 ± 9 and 54 ± 9 minutes, respectively) (p<0.001). There were no differences between groups in time elapsed from the end of anaesthesia to both first food intake and first defecation. In both groups, the score of the Rabbit Grimace Scale decreased over time with statistically significant differences between 60 minutes and all the subsequent time points (p<0.001). Vessel sealing devices may be recommended over conventional haemostasis for rabbit ovariohysterectomy to decrease the duration of surgery and anaesthesia, with potential beneficial effects on sustainability and practice workflow.

Nematode, cestode, protozoan, microsporidian, and pentastomid parasites affect domesticated and wild rabbits, hares, and jackrabbits of the genera Brachylagus, Lepus, Oryctolagus, Pentalagus, and Sylvilagus. Some endoparasite infections are of limited or no significance, whereas others have potentially profound consequences. Accurate identification of endoparasites of rabbits, hares, and jackrabbits is an important facet of the work of veterinary pathologists engaged in lagomorph pathology. Here I review endoparasites from the pathologist's perspective, focusing on pathogenesis, lesions, and implications of infection. Stomach nematodes Graphidium strigosum and Obeliscoides cuniculi are infrequently pathogenic but may cause gastritis and gastric mucosal thickening. Nematodes Passalurus ambiguus, Protostrongylus spp., Trichostrongylus spp., and Trichuris spp. are rarely associated with disease. Adult Capillaria hepatica (syn. Calodium hepaticum) nematodes and non-embryonated eggs cause granulomatous hepatitis in wild Oryctolagus cuniculus and Lepus europaeus, resulting in multifocal, off-white, hepatic lesions, which may be misdiagnosed as hepatic eimeriosis. When the rabbit is an intermediate host for carnivore cestodes, the space-occupying effects of Cysticercus pisiformis and Coenurus serialis may have pathologic consequences. Eimeria stiedai is a major cause of white-spotted liver in O. cuniculus, particularly in juveniles. Enteric coccidiosis is a noteworthy cause of unthriftiness in young animals, and frequently manifests as diarrhea with grossly appreciable multifocal off-white intestinal lesions. O. cuniculus is the natural host for the zoonotic microsporidian Encephalitozoon cuniculi. Infection may be acute and focused mainly on the kidneys, or it may follow a chronic disease course, frequently with neurologic lesions. A latent carrier status may also develop.

Domestic rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) are commonly kept as pets or bred for laboratory investigation, meat, fur production, or a combination of these purposes. We conducted a retrospective study to assess the prevalence of diseases in domestic rabbits according to purpose. We retrieved results of autopsies, biopsies, and cytologies from 2,583 cases received at 4 diagnostic laboratories in California from 2013-2022. Rabbits were classified as pets (2,241; 86.8%), laboratory animals (92; 3.6%), meat-production animals (60; 2.3%), or multipurpose animals (190; 7.4%). A final diagnosis was reached in 2,360 (91.4%) cases and was classified by system, etiology, and type of process. Pet rabbits had the highest median age (5.9 y; vs. 3 y, 0.67 y, and 0.25 y in meat, multipurpose, and laboratory rabbits, respectively), and most of the neoplasms were diagnosed in this group (872 of the total 896 neoplasms in the study; 97.3%), with tumors of the skin, female reproductive tract, and hematolymphoid system being the most common. Laboratory rabbits had a high prevalence of infectious enterotyphlocolitis (40 of 92; 43.4%), and ~45% of those cases were due to opportunistic colibacillosis. Infectious and parasitic pneumonias were common in meat rabbits (18 of 60; 30%); pneumonic pasteurellosis accounted for >60% of those cases. Infectious cholangiohepatitides were common in multipurpose rabbits (61 of 110; 55.5%), with rabbit hemorrhagic disease representing the most common etiology (82.4% of those cases). Our results demonstrate that purpose of use can predict prevalence of disease in rabbits submitted to diagnostic laboratories.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Type 1 long QT syndrome (LQT1) is caused by pathogenic variants in the KCNQ1-encoded Kv7.1 potassium channels, which pathologically prolong ventricular action potential duration (APD). Herein, the pathologic phenotype in transgenic LQT1 rabbits is rescued using a novel KCNQ1 suppression-replacement (SupRep) gene therapy. METHODS: KCNQ1-SupRep gene therapy was developed by combining into a single construct a KCNQ1 shRNA (suppression) and an shRNA-immune KCNQ1 cDNA (replacement), packaged into adeno-associated virus serotype 9, and delivered in vivo via an intra-aortic root injection (1E10 vg/kg). To ascertain the efficacy of SupRep, 12-lead electrocardiograms were assessed in adult LQT1 and wild-type (WT) rabbits and patch-clamp experiments were performed on isolated ventricular cardiomyocytes. RESULTS: KCNQ1-SupRep treatment of LQT1 rabbits resulted in significant shortening of the pathologically prolonged QT index (QTi) towards WT levels. Ventricular cardiomyocytes isolated from treated LQT1 rabbits demonstrated pronounced shortening of APD compared to LQT1 controls, leading to levels similar to WT (LQT1-UT vs. LQT1-SupRep, P < .0001, LQT1-SupRep vs. WT, P = ns). Under ß-adrenergic stimulation with isoproterenol, SupRep-treated rabbits demonstrated a WT-like physiological QTi and APD90 behaviour. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides the first animal-model, proof-of-concept gene therapy for correction of LQT1. In LQT1 rabbits, treatment with KCNQ1-SupRep gene therapy normalized the clinical QTi and cellular APD90 to near WT levels both at baseline and after isoproterenol. If similar QT/APD correction can be achieved with intravenous administration of KCNQ1-SupRep gene therapy in LQT1 rabbits, these encouraging data should compel continued development of this gene therapy for patients with LQT1.

Myxoma virus (MYXV) is a double-stranded DNA-containing virus of the family Poxviridae, genus Leporipoxvirus. MYXV is an important model virus for evolutionary and immunological research and a promising oncolytic. In this study, we sequenced and analyzed two complete genomes of MYXV virus vaccine strains B-82 and Rabbivac-B, which are widely used for vaccine production in Russia. Here, we first show that MYXV vaccine strains B-82 and Rabbivac-B share a common origin with the American recombinant MYXV MAV vaccine strain. In addition, our data suggest that the MYXV B-82 and Rabbivac-B strains contain a number of genes at the 5' and 3' ends that are identical to the virulent MYXV Lausanne strain. Several unique genetic signatures were identified in the M013L, M017L, M023, and M121R genes, helping to achieve high genetic resolution between vaccine strains. Overall, these findings highlight the evolutionary flexibility of certain genes in the MYXV genome and provide insights into the molecular epidemiology of the virus and subsequent vaccine development.

Polyclonal antibodies are relatively easy to produce and may supplement monoclonal antibodies for some applications or even have some advantages.The choice of species for production of (peptide) antisera is based on practical considerations, including availability of immunogen (vaccine) and animals. Two major factors govern the production of antisera: the nature of adaptive immune responses, which take place over days/weeks and ethical guidelines for animal welfare.Here, simple procedures for immunization of mice, rabbits, sheep, goats, pigs, horses, and chickens are presented.

Sulfur mustard (SM) is a highly potent alkylating vesicant agent and remains a relevant threat to both civilians and military personnel. The eyes are the most sensitive organ after airborne SM exposure, causing ocular injuries with no antidote or specific therapeutics available. In order to identify relevant biomarkers and to obtain a deeper understanding of the underlying biochemical events, we performed an untargeted metabolomics analysis using liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry of plasma samples from New Zealand white rabbits ocularly exposed to vapors of SM. Metabolic profiles (332 unique metabolites) from SM-exposed (n = 16) and unexposed rabbits (n = 8) were compared at different time intervals from 1 to 28 days. The observed time-dependent changes in metabolic profiles highlighted the profound dysregulation of the sulfur amino acids, the phenylalanine, the tyrosine and tryptophan pathway, and the polyamine and purine biosynthesis, which could reflect antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. Taurine and 3,4-dihydroxy-phenylalanine (Dopa) seem to be specifically related to SM exposure and correspond well with the different phases of ocular damage, while the dysregulation of adenosine, polyamines, and acylcarnitines might be related to ocular neovascularization. Additionally, neither cysteine, N-acetylcysteine, or guanine SM adducts were detected in the plasma of exposed rabbits at any time point. Overall, our study provides an unprecedented view of the plasma metabolic changes post-SM ocular exposure, which may open up the development of potential new treatment strategies.

Rabbits are popular pets in the urban environment of Hong Kong, ranking third behind cats and dogs. Here we describe the frequency of neoplastic and non-neoplastic lesions in biopsies from pet rabbits submitted to the CityU Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory between 2019 and 2022, comprising 247 tissue samples from 243 rabbits collected by veterinarians in 19 veterinary clinics. Among the 243 rabbits, there were 128 females (65 spayed), 114 males (54 castrated); sex information was not provided for 1 rabbit. The rabbit breeds included 45 Lionhead, 35 Dwarf, 14 Lop, 11 Dwarf Lop, 5 French Lop, 3 Angora, 2 Dutch, 2 Holland Lop, and 1 each of Netherland Dwarf, Velveteen, Mini Lop, and New Zealand White. The mean ages of rabbits with neoplastic and non-neoplastic lesions were 7.1 and 5.7 y, respectively. The most common neoplastic lesions were adenocarcinoma (26.4%), trichoblastoma (21.4%), sarcoma (9.4%), and thymoma (8.2%). The most common non-neoplastic lesion was uterine cystic endometrial hyperplasia (14.8%), followed by dermal abscess formation in the ventral abdomen or skin of the head (12.5%). Although a broad spectrum of other lesions was described, our findings in biopsies from pet rabbits in Hong Kong are consistent with those in other jurisdictions.

Interest in causes of mortality of free-ranging, native North American lagomorphs has grown with the emergence of rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus 2 (RHDV2). Over the years 2013-2022, the Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study received 119 Sylvilagus spp. case submissions from the central and eastern United States, comprising 147 rabbits. Most (86%) of these submissions occurred after detecting RHDV2 in the United States in 2020. Laboratory data from these rabbits were retrospectively evaluated for major causes, contributors to mortality, and pathogen detections. Gross and histologic examination was performed for 112 rabbits. Common primary causes of death included trauma (n = 49), bacterial disease (n = 31), emaciation (n = 6), and parasitism (n = 6). Among the 32 rabbits with bacterial disease, 12 were diagnosed with tularemia and 7 with pasteurellosis. Rabbits with pasteurellosis had disseminated abscessation, septicemia, and/or polyserositis. Less commonly, cutaneous fibroma (n = 2), notoedric mange (n = 2), encephalitozoonosis (n = 2), neoplasia (round-cell sarcoma; n = 1), and congenital abnormalities (n = 1) were diagnosed. RHDV2 was not detected in 123 rabbits tested. Although RHDV2 has not been detected in wild lagomorphs in the eastern United States, detections in domestic rabbits from the region emphasize the need for continued surveillance. Furthermore, continued surveillance for Francisella tularensis informs public health risk. Overall, increased knowledge of Sylvilagus spp. health furthers our understanding of diseases affecting these important prey and game species.

BACKGROUND: Apricot kernels containing amygdalin (AMG) as the major cyanogenic glycoside are potentially useful as a complementary therapy for the management of several ailments including cancer. Nevertheless, little is known regarding the toxic and therapeutic doses of AMG, particularly in terms of male reproduction. Hence, this study evaluates selected qualitative characteristics of rabbit testicular tissue following in vivo administration of AMG or apricot kernels for 28 days. METHODS: The rabbits were randomly divided into five groups (Control, P1, P2, P3, P4). The Control received no AMG/apricot kernels while the experimental groups P1 and P2 received a daily intramuscular injection of amygdalin at a dose of 0.6 and 3.0 mg/kg of body weight (b.w.) for 28 days, respectively. P3 and P4 received a daily dose of 60 and 300 mg/kg b.w. of crushed apricot kernels mixed with feed for 28 days, respectively. Changes to the testicular structure were quantified morphometrically, while tissue lysates were subjected to the evaluation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, total antioxidant capacity, activities of antioxidant enzymes, and glutathione concentration. The extent of damage to the proteins and lipids was quantified as well. Levels of selected cytokines were determined by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay while a luminometric approach was used to assess the activity of caspases. RESULTS: Rabbits treated with 3.0 mg/kg b.w. AMG presented a significantly increased protein oxidation (p = 0.0118) accompanied by a depletion of superoxide dismutase (p = 0.0464), catalase (p = 0.0317), and glutathione peroxidase (p = 0.0002). Significantly increased levels of interleukin-1 beta (p = 0.0012), tumor necrosis factors alpha (p = 0.0159), caspase-3/7 (p = 0.0014), and caspase-9 (p = 0.0243) were also recorded in the experimental group P2 when compared to the Control. No effects were observed in the rabbits treated with apricot kernels at the oxidative, inflammatory, and histopathological levels. CONCLUSIONS: Apricot kernels did not induce toxicity in the testicular tissues of male rabbits, unlike pure AMG, which had a negative effect on male reproductive structures carried out through oxidative, inflammatory, and pro-apoptotic mechanisms.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of interleukin-6 (IL-6) inhibitor (tocilizumab) on bacterial infection-associated bone resorption around implants during osseointegration in rabbits. MATERIALS AND METHODS: At total of 24 male, 9-monthold New Zealand white rabbits were included, and their two mandibular anterior teeth were extracted. Three months after extraction, 24 one-piece Dentium implants (Ø 2.5 mm, intraosseous length of 12 mm) were inserted in the anterior mandible, and the rabbits were divided into four groups (n = 6 per group). Different treatment methods were used in each group: blank control group (BC); only silk ligation (negative control [NC]); silk ligation and injection with minocycline hydrochloride ointment (positive control [PC]); and silk ligation and injection with tocilizumab at 8 mg/kg via the auricle vein (experimental [EP]). Eight weeks later, the animals were sacrificed, and samples were collected and then analyzed using microcomputed tomography (microCT) scanning, immunohistochemical analysis, and histologic analysis. RESULTS: From the microCT measurement, the ratio of the bone volume to the total volume (BV/TV) in the EP group was 67.00% ± 2.72%, which was higher than that in the other three groups (58.85% ± 2.43% in the BC group, 55.72% ± 2.48% in the PC group, and 36.52% ± 3.02% in the NC group). From immunohistochemical analysis, the expression of IL-6 was found to be higher in the NC group than in the BC, PC, and EP groups, but there was no statistical difference between these three groups. Furthermore, the RANKL (receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand) expression was the lowest in the EP group, followed by the BC group, the PC group, and the NC group, which had the highest expression; there was no difference between the NC and PC groups. Upon histologic analysis, significant new bone was found on the implant surfaces in the EP group, sparse and less new bone could be seen in the BC and PC groups, and the most serious bone resorption occurred in the NC group. CONCLUSIONS: Tocilizumab, an inhibitor of IL-6, has a certain effect in preventing bone loss around implants caused by bacterial infection during the osseointegration period.

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a pathophysiological syndrome that is extremely difficult to manage, and there is currently no effective treatment. We want to elucidate the therapeutic effect of ethyl pyruvate (EP) on PAH and its possible mechanism. Pulmonary artery endothelial cells (PAECs) were cultured in conventional low-oxygen environments, and cellular proliferation was monitored after treatment with EP. Expression of p-PI3K/Akt, LC3-II, and Beclin-1 was detected by Western blot. After hyperkinetic PAH rabbits' models were treated with EP, hemodynamic data were collected. Right ventricular hypertrophy and pulmonary vascular remodeling were evaluated. Expression of p-PI3K/Akt, LC3-II, and Beclin-1 protein was also detected after using autophagy inhibitor and agonists. We found that EP could inhibit PAECs proliferation. After EP treatment, expression of p-PI3K/Akt was upregulated in vitro and in vivo. LC3-II and Beclin-1 were inhibited and their expression was lower after autophagy inhibitor was given, while after administration of autophagy agonists, their expression was higher than that in the EP alone group. Besides, EP attenuated PAH, and right ventricular hypertrophy and pulmonary vascular remodeling were also reversed. EP can reduce PAH and reverse vascular remodeling which is associated with inhibition of autophagy in PAECs based on PI3K-Akt signaling pathway. The results of this study can provide surgical opportunities for patients with severe PAH caused by congenital heart disease in clinical cardiovascular surgery.

Various surgical methods have so far been developed for treating rectovaginal fistula (RVF), each with its own advantages and disadvantages. The lack of standardized animal models of RVF is a major reason for the failure to establish a unified and effective surgical method for the treatment of RVF. This study aimed to explore the feasibility of an RVF animal model by magnetic compression and compare it with the traditional modeling method. Thirty-two female Japanese white rabbits were randomly divided into four groups: A, B, C, and D, based on how the rectovaginal septum was treated. The operation time, intraoperative blood loss, and model success rate of each group were determined. The experimental animals were euthanized 2 weeks after the operation. Their rectovaginal septum specimens were obtained. RVF was observed by the naked eye. The fistula size was measured. Histological changes of fistula were observed by hematoxylin and eosin and Masson staining. All rabbits completed the RVF model and survived 2 weeks after the operation. Groups A and B had no bleeding, while groups C and D had < 0.5 mL of bleeding. The magnet detached in 4-6 days in group A, while it remained in place for 2 weeks after surgery in group B. Only one group D rabbit had a plastic hose for 2 weeks after surgery. The RVFs of groups A and C healed by themselves. In group B, the fistula was well formed. In group D, fistula healing was observed in three animals and the diameter of the fistulas was only 2.82-4.64 mm in the other four animals. Groups B and D had a scar on the inner surface of fistulas. Our study shows that the magnetic compression technique based on the T-shaped magnet is a highly useful method to establishing a continuous and stable RVF model in rabbits.

BACKGROUND: Studies have described various surgical maneuvers in rhinoplasty to limit thickening from excessive scarring in the supratip region. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of three maneuvers-a simple suture, a U suture, and bolster dressing-used to avoid supratip deformity in a rabbit model. METHODS: Thirty-two male New Zealand white rabbits were included. The animals were divided into four groups, and dissection was performed in the supra-perichondrial plane up to the supratip region through an open rhinoplasty incision. After dissection, the following approaches were applied to the supratip region: Group 1, simple approximation suture; Group 2, U suture; Group 3, bolster dressing; and Group 4 (control group), no suture. All animals were sacrificed after 12 weeks. Histological analysis was performed. RESULTS: In Group 4, scar thickness was significantly greater than in the other groups (p < 0.05). Group 3 had greater scar thickness than Group 2 (p < 0.05). The ratio of scar thickness to skin thickness was higher in Group 4 compared with the other groups (p < 0.05). Finally, there was no difference in the ratio of scar thickness to skin thickness between Groups 1, 2, and 3 (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: In this study, it was concluded that surgical methods using sutures in the supratip region reduced scar thickness in a rabbit model, and these surgical methods had similar levels of effectiveness. The purpose of the study was to determine the effects of raspberry seed oil on the slaughter performance traits, plasma lipid concentration and meat quality of purebred Termond White rabbits (n = 42; 18♂, 24♀). In each group (3 × n = 14; 6♂, 8♀), the experimental animals were fed a complete pelleted feed with constant access to drinking water. Rabbits in the first experimental group received a feed ration enriched with a 1% addition of raspberry seed oil, while rabbits in the second experimental group were given a 2% addition of the same oil. These animals were slaughtered on day 84. The addition of raspberry seed oil did not significantly affect the slaughter performance traits of the rabbits (p > 0.05). It also did not significantly affect the fat content, shear force, hardness, springiness, cohesiveness or chewiness of the meat obtained from the rabbits' longissimus lumborum muscle. However, the experiment showed that the addition of raspberry seed oil had a significant effect on the fatty acid profile of rabbit meat (p ≤ 0.05). Even a small share of this oil in the feed ration significantly increased the level of linoleic acid (p ≤ 0.05). This study showed that feeding pellets containing an oil supplement with a high content of unsaturated fatty acids had a positive effect on rabbits' plasma lipid levels.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to determine clinically and genetically the allergic effects of titanium and poly-ether-ether-ketone (PEEK) implants following loading in rabbit tibias. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included 18 white New Zealand male rabbits (n = 18) divided evenly into three groups: control, titanium (Ti), and PEEK (P). Clinically, the allergenic effect of titanium and PEEK was investigated by detecting the effect on lymph nodes. Furthermore, RT-PCR and ELISA were used to detect the expression of certain genes IL-6, TNF-α, OPG, RANKL, and RUNX-2 through both types of implants. RESULTS: Our findings demonstrated that titanium implants induced enlarged lymph nodes, which PEEK did not. Overall, RT-PCR and ELISA techniques revealed that Ti implants had higher expression of the inflammatory genes IL-6 and TNF-α. Ti had the highest expression in OPG findings, while PEEK had the lowest. RANKL expression was highest in the control group and lowest in the PEEK group. RUNX-2 is the highest for the control group and the lowest for the titanium group. CONCLUSION: Although titanium implants elicited greater allergy responses than PEEK implants, titanium has the highest expression of bone formation genes and the lowest expression of bone resorption genes, making it preferable to PEEK.

Artificial insemination is a widely adopted method in livestock production for various reasons such as health security and genetic improvement. Although sperm motility is of paramount importance in this technique as it directly influences the sperm's ability to fertilize the oocyte. In previous research on human sperm, we observed that in vitro supplementation with Origanum Vulgare essential oil significantly improved sperm motility and antioxidant activities, all without negatively affecting the integrity of their DNA. Based on these promising results, we considered it crucial to explore the potential effects of supplementation with this essential oil on sperm of other species. In this study, we studied the effects of oregano essential oil supplementation on sperm motility of (bulls = 15) (dogs = 15) and (rabbits = 9) and the changes that in vitro incubation with this oil could induce on sub-motile sperm populations of different species. The results of the study showed that in vitro oregano essential oil supplementation had a significant impact on sperm motility in the three species studied. This improvement in sperm motility was accompanied by an increase in the proportion of subpopulations with high velocity and progressivity: an increase of (2.16%, 10% and 4.84%) for subpopulation 1, (6.50%, 5.5% and 3.17%) for subpopulation 4 in bulls, dogs and rabbits respectively. While the subpopulations representing low motile and non-progressive sperm have decreased. These results suggest that the use of oregano essential oil can be a beneficial approach to improve sperm motility in different species, which can have important implications for the success of artificial insemination.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the epidemiologic features of rabbits with odontogenic abscesses. ANIMALS: 72 client-owned rabbits. METHODS: The medical record database of a veterinary teaching hospital was searched to identify rabbits with odontogenic abscesses characterized by a palpable facial mass and confirmed via CT scan. Data reviewed included age, breed, presenting complaint, abscess location, bacterial culture results, treatment, and outcome. RESULTS: Lop-eared rabbits were the most common breeds affected (20/72 [28%]), and mini lop rabbits were significantly overrepresented. The mandibular quadrants were more frequently affected (65/92 [71%]), and osteomyelitis was a common comorbidity on CT (53/72 [74%]). The most common aerobic and anaerobic isolates were Streptococcus spp (17/40 [43%]) and Fusobacterium spp (10/22 [45%]), respectively. Systemic antibiotic therapy alone was performed in 35 of 62 (56%) treated cases, with documented resolution in 25%. Abscess packing with antibiotic-soaked gauze in conjunction with systemic antibiotic therapy was performed in 20 of 62 (32%) treated cases. Resolution of the odontogenic abscesses with this treatment protocol was documented in 17 of 20 (85%) cases. The number of packing procedures used to obtain resolution of infection was 4 (IQR, 3 to 5). CLINICAL RELEVANCE: A combination of the abscess-packing technique, which avoids extensive surgery and extraction of the involved elodont teeth, with systemic antibiotic therapy can be an effective treatment option for rabbits with palpable odontogenic abscesses and can result in a high cure rate comparable to more invasive surgical treatments. Antibiotic treatment alone is not recommended, as it has a low chance of abscess resolution.

BACKGROUND: There is an increasing interest in using preclinical models for development and assessment of medical devices and imaging techniques for prostatic disease care. Still, a comprehensive assessment of the prostate's radiological anatomy in primary preclinical models such as dogs, rabbits, and mice utilizing human anatomy as a reference point remains necessary with no optimal model for each purpose being clearly defined in the literature. Therefore, this study compares the anatomical characteristics of different animal models to the human prostatic gland from the imaging perspective. METHODS: We imaged five Beagle laboratory dogs, five New Zealand White rabbits, and five mice, all sexually mature males, under Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) approval. Ultrasonography (US) was performed using the Vevo® F2 for mice (57 MHz probe). Rabbits and dogs were imaged using the Siemens® Acuson S3000 (17 MHz probe) and endocavitary (8 MHz) probes, respectively. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was also conducted with a 7T scanner in mice and 3T scanner in rabbits and dogs. RESULTS: Canine transrectal US emerged as the optimal method for US imaging, depicting a morphologically similar gland to humans but lacking echoic zonal differentiation. MRI findings in canines indicated a homogeneously structured gland similar to the human peripheral zone on T2-weighted images (T2W) and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC). In rabbits, US imaging faced challenges due to the pubic symphysis, whereas MRI effectively visualized all structures with the prostate presenting a similar aspect to the human peripheral gland on T2W and ADC maps. Murine prostate assessment revealed poor visualization of the prostate glands in ultrasound due to its small size, while 7T MRI delineated the distinct prostates and its lobes, with the lateral and dorsal prostate resembling the peripheral zone and the anterior prostate the central zone of the human gland. CONCLUSION: Dogs stand out as superior models for advanced preclinical studies in prostatic disease research. However, mice present as a good model for early stage studies and rabbits are a cost-effective alternative and serve as valuable tools in specific research domains when canine research is not feasible.

BACKGROUND: The study aims to assess the safety and effectiveness of BoneTape™, a new resorbable bone fixation device, using a zygomatic fracture model in rabbits. METHODS: The study followed BoneTape™ samples and control (sham) groups over 2-, 6-, and 12-week periods post-zygomaticomaxillary (ZM) osteotomy and zygomaticofrontal (ZF) disarticulation. The osteotomized segments were analyzed for bone healing, inflammatory response, and tissue healing. µCT imaging and histological analysis were used to examine the axial alignment, offset, and quality of new bone formation. RESULTS: BoneTape™ samples demonstrated enhanced maintenance of the initial intraoperative positioning, reduced axial offset, and better alignment when compared with the control group, enabling stable bone healing under physiological loading conditions. Complete union was observed at 12-weeks in both groups. The BoneTape™ group experienced minimal immune and tissue reactions, classically associated with wound healing, and showed an increased number of giant cells at 6 and 12-weeks. CONCLUSION: BoneTape™ represents a promising advancement in osteosynthesis, demonstrating efficacy in maintaining stable zygomatic reconstruction and eliciting minimal immune response in a rabbit model. This study introduces BoneTape™ as a disruptive solution specifically designed for clinical application in cranio-maxillofacial fracture fixation, with the potential to eliminate the use of over-engineered solutions while offering benefits such as ease of application and fewer biologically disruptive steps.
