RESUMO

The genetic systems of Paspalum species have not been extensively studied. We analyzed the ploidy, reproductive mode, mating system, and fertility of four Paspalum species-Paspalum durifolium, Paspalum ionanthum, Paspalum regnellii, and Paspalum urvillei. An analysis of 378 individuals from 20 populations of northeastern Argentina was conducted. All populations of the four Paspalum species were pure tetraploid and had a sexual and stable reproductive mode. However, some populations of P. durifolium and P. ionanthum showed low levels of apospory. Populations of P. durifolium and P. ionanthum had low seed sets under self-pollination but were fertile under open pollination, showing that self-incompatibility likely caused self-sterility. In contrast, populations of P. regnellii or P. urvillei showed no evidence of apospory, and seed sets in both self- and open pollination conditions were high, suggesting that they are self-compatible due to the absence of pollen-pistil molecular incompatibility mechanisms. The evolutionary origin of the four Paspalum species could explain these differences. This study supplies valuable insights into the genetic systems of Paspalum species, which could have implications for their conservation and management.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Knowledge of the desire for children among childhood cancer survivors (CCSs) is scarce. This study evaluated the desire for children in male CCSs in comparison with male siblings. METHODS: A nationwide cohort study was conducted as part of the Dutch Childhood Cancer Survivor Study LATER study: 1317 male CCSs and 407 male sibling controls completed a questionnaire addressing the desire for children. Logistic regression analyses were used to explore the independent association between survivorship status and the desire for children. Furthermore, additional analyses were performed to identify which cancer-related factors were associated with the desire for children in male CCSs. RESULTS: After adjustments for the age at assessment, the percentage of men who had a desire for children was significantly lower among CCSs compared with the siblings (74% vs. 82%; odds ratio [OR], 0.61; 95% CI, 0.46-0.82; p = .001). The association between survivorship status and the desire for children was attenuated after adjustments for marital status, level of education, and employment status (OR, 0.83; 95% CI, 0.61-1.14; p = .250). The percentage of men who had an unfulfilled desire for children remained significantly higher among CCSs compared with the siblings after adjustments for sociodemographic factors (25% vs. 7%; OR, 5.14; 95% CI, 2.48-10.64; p < .001). CONCLUSIONS: The majority of male CCSs have a desire for children. The likelihood of having to deal with an unfulfilled desire for children is 5 times higher among CCSs compared with their siblings. This insight is important for understanding the needs and experienced problems of CCSs regarding family planning and fertility issues.

RESUMO

Deslorelin is currently registered for the induction of temporary infertility in male dogs, male cats, male ferrets, and also prepubertal female dogs, but research has shown its usefulness for other conditions requiring chronic treatment. This paper presents six cases of dogs chronically treated with deslorelin for indications such as benign prostatic hyperplasia, control of fertility, abnormal reproductive behavior and urinary incontinence. All animals were in good health during treatment. Treatment duration was 2-9 years. No short-term side effects were observed except for flare-up reactions, which were observed only in 1/4 intact males. Two dogs developed a neoplasia: a spayed bitch treated for urinary incontinence developed a pituitary carcinoma, and an intact male dog implanted for control of fertility developed a bladder carcinoma. While the pituitary carcinoma seems unlikely to be related to deslorelin, the bladder carcinoma could be due to the neutered condition of the dog (which was treated for 9 years) as urinary tract neoplasia is more common in dogs following gonadectomy. Chronic treatment with deslorelin is regarded as safe when an animal is being treated for life. The possibility that a pause in the treatment might be helpful for the animal should be investigated.

RESUMO

In rodents, eating at atypical circadian times, such as during the biological rest phase when feeding is normally minimal, reduces fertility. Prior findings suggest this fertility impairment is due, at least in part, to reduced mating success. However, the physiological and behavioral mechanisms underlying this reproductive suppression are not known. In the present study, we tested the hypothesis that mistimed feeding-induced infertility is due to a disruption in the normal circadian timing of mating behavior and/or the generation of pre-ovulatory luteinizing hormone (LH) surges (estrogen positive feedback). In the first experiment, male+female mouse pairs, acclimated to be food restricted to either the light (mistimed feeding) or dark (control feeding) phase, were scored for mounting frequency and ejaculations over 96 h. Male mounting behavior and ejaculations were distributed much more widely across the day in light-fed mice than in dark-fed controls and fewer light-fed males ejaculated. In the second experiment, the timing of the LH surge, a well characterized circadian event driven by estradiol (E2) and the SCN, was analyzed from serial blood samples taken from ovariectomized and E2-primed female mice that were light-, dark-, or ad-lib-fed. LH concentrations peaked 2 h after lights-off in both dark-fed and ad-lib control females, as expected, but not in light-fed females. Instead, the normally clustered LH surges were distributed widely with high inter-mouse variability in the light-fed group. These data indicate that mistimed feeding disrupts the temporal control of the neural processes underlying both ovulation and mating behavior, contributing to infertility.

RESUMO

Neurohypophysial hormones regulate the reproductive behavior of teleosts; however, their role in the gestation and parturition of ovoviviparous fishes with male pregnancy (syngnathids) remains to be demonstrated. In the present study, the complementary DNA (cDNA) sequences of arginine vasotocin (VT) and isotocin (IT) from the lined seahorse (Hippocampus erectus) were cloned and identified. We observed that the mature core peptides of seahorse VT and IT were conserved among teleosts. In the phylogenic tree, seahorse VT and IT were clustered independently with teleost VT and IT. The tissue distribution patterns of VT and IT were similar, and both were highly expressed in the brain, gills, and gonads. Interestingly, they were also expressed to some extent in the brood pouch. In situ hybridization revealed that VT and IT messenger RNA (mRNA) signals in the brain were mainly located in the preoptic area region of the hypothalamus. Intraperitoneal administration of the VT core peptide to pregnant seahorses induced premature parturition, stimulated gonadotropin release, increased serum estrogen levels, and decreased prolactin secretion. Moreover, VT injection upregulated the mRNA expression of the membrane estrogen receptor in the brood pouch. In summary, neurohypophysial hormones promote premature parturition by regulating estrogen synthesis through the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonad axis.

RESUMO

Lateralization has been documented in many insect species, but limited information on courtship and mating lateralization in wild conditions is available. We conducted field investigation on the courtship and mating behavior of the neem bug, Halys dentatus, a polyphagous insect mainly infesting Azadirachta indica, with particular attention to lateralization of mating displays. We investigated the presence of population-level behavioral asymmetries during H. dentatus sexual interactions and their influence on male mating success. Two lateralized traits were found: left or right-biased male approaches to the female and left or right-biased male turning displays. Males approaching females from their left side were mainly right-biased in the 180° turning display, and males that approached females from their right side were mainly left-biased. Right-biased males by turning 180° to carry out end-to-end genital contact, performed a lower number of copulation attempts, thus starting copula earlier than left-biased males. Mating success was higher when males approached the left side of females during sexual interactions. A higher number of successful mating interactions was observed in right-biased males when turning 180°. Our results add useful knowledge on the reproductive behavior of H. dentatus in the field, with potential applications for identifying useful benchmarks to monitor the quality of individuals mass-reared for pest control purposes over time.

RESUMO

In the present study, responses of the Chinese brown frog (Rana chensinensis) to exposure to different doses and duration of Octyphenol (OP) which degraded from alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEs) were characterized during the adult periods. The effects of OP on growth, development and reproduction and the expression of genes in gonad were investigated. The expression levels of fshß, lhß, fshr and lhr had significant differences as the exposure time increased. The pathological and morphological changes were also observed in the OP treatments. Furthermore, the number of TUNEL positive cells and the TUNEL index was elevated after exposed to OP. Besides that, OP treatment could influence its mating behavior and reduce the fertilization rates. Taken together, these results indicated that OP disrupt sex steroid signaling, normal development of spermatogenesis, courtship behavior of male frogs and decline fertilization rate in R. chensinensis.

This article analyzes the effects of the postponement of maternity in three areas: i) demographic, ii) clinical and perinatological and iii) biological. Of course, the existing demographic literature comes primarily from well-developed countries, but an effort has been made to collect as much data from developing countries. The situation in Europe, the U.S. and Latin America is analyzed to end this section with the specific reality in Chile. From the clinical point of view, special interest is placed on changes in the probability of pregnancy by cycle (defined as fecundability) and fertility in general. In the perinatological aspects, the increased frequency of early fetal death (spontaneous abortion) and stillbirth is emphasized, with special mention of some pathologies (frequency of Down syndrome and others). It is also stressed the significant higher frequency of low and very low birth weight, the need newborn hospitalization (perinatal morbidity), as well as the effects on neonatal mortality. Biologically, the postponement of maternity has its correlation in the loss of ovarian reserve and the decrease in oocyte quality that involves an increased incidence of fertilization failure and embryos with low potential for development and aneuploidies, mainly dependent on maternal age. Some aspects of uterine aging and its consequences on placental development and function are also mentioned. The discussion is mainly focused on women, but includes some aspects of the male contribution to this issue

RESUMO

Tributyltin (TBT) was reported to affect sexual behavior and gametogenesis in fish. However, the modes of action involved are largely unclear. In order to elucidate the toxicological mechanisms of TBT in reproduction, zebrafish (Danio rerio) males were exposed to TBT at concentrations of 100 and 500 ng/L for 28 days. After exposure, the sperm count of the treated fish was sharply decreased though the testis weight and gonadosomatic index remained unchanged. Moreover, reduced number of spermatogonia and spermatozoa and increased spermatocytes were observed in TBT-treated fish by histological observation and PCNA-immunostaining. Increased number of apoptotic-positive spermatocytes was also present in TBT-treated fish, indicating an enhanced apoptosis in these cells. Consistent to decreased number of spermatogonia, down-regulated expressions of genes responsible for germ cell proliferation (cyclind1 and pcna) were observed in TBT-treated fish. In contrast, TBT elevated the expressions of genes involved in meiotic entry and maintenance (aldhla2, sycp3 and dmc1) while suppressed the mRNA level of gene responsible for terminus of meiotic entry (cyp26a1), in agreement with arrested meiosis and reduced sperm count. Furthermore, TBT significantly elevated the ratios of bax/bcl-2 and tnfrsf1a/tnfrsf1b in testis, which are markers for intrinsic- and extrinsic-apoptotic pathways, consistent with the enhanced TUNEL positive signals in spermatocytes. Moreover, TBT also significantly affected the parameter of reproductive behaviors in treated fish (reflected by decreased frequency of meeting, visits and time spent in spawning area). Consistently, the expressions of genes responsible for the modulation of reproductive behaviors in brain (such as cyp19a1b, kiss2, gnrh3 and ompb) were significantly down-regulated in treated-fish. Interestingly, disrupted reproductive behaviors of untreated female fish were also observed in the present study. The present study indicated that TBT might affect the reproduction of zebrafish male by disrupting the spermatogenesis and reproductive behavior of the fish.

RESUMO

The impact of progestins (i.e. synthetic forms of progesterone) on aquatic organisms has drawn increasing attention due to their widespread occurrence in the aquatic environments and potential effects on the endocrine system of fish. In this study, the effects of norethindrone (NET, a progestin) on the reproductive behavior, sex hormone production and transcriptional expressions were evaluated by exposing female zebrafish to NET at 0, 3.1, 36.2 and 398.6 ng L-1 for 60 days. Results showed that NET impaired the mating behaviors of female at 36.2 and 398.6 ng L-1 exhibited by males and increased the frequency of atretic follicular cells in the ovary exposed to NET at 398.6 ng L-1. As for sex hormones, plasma testosterone concentration in zebrafish increased, while estradiol concentration decreased. Up-regulation of genes (Npr, Mpra, Mprß, Fshß, Lß, Tshb, Nis and Dio2) was detected in the brain of fish exposed to NET at 398.6 ng L-1. The transcriptional levels of genes (Esr1, Vtg1, Ar, Cyp19a, Cyp11b and Ptgs2) were generally inhibited in the ovary of zebrafish by NET at 398.6 ng L-1. Moreover, the transcripts of genes (Vtg1, Esr1, Ar and Pgr) in the liver were reduced by NET at 36.2 and 398.6 ng L-1. Our findings suggest that NET can potentially diminish the of fish populations not only by damaging their reproductive organs, but also by altering their mating behavior through the changes in the expressions of genes responsible for the production of sex hormones.

RESUMO

The red-sided garter snake exhibits a dissociated reproductive pattern, mating at a time when their gonads are quiescent and circulating sex steroids, initially reported to be low, have been found to be elevated during the breeding season. However, the only cue identified that initiates courtship behavior and mating in the red-sided garter snake is an extended period of low-temperature dormancy (LTD) followed by exposure to warm temperatures. In this study, we examined a possible association between winter dormancy, sex steroid hormone metabolism, and initiation of reproductive behavior in the male red-sided garter snake. Upon emergence from winter dormancy, courtship behavior was assessed using attractive females as stimuli. Animals receiving implants containing 1,4,6-androstatriene-3,17-dione (ATD), an aromatase inhibiter, showed little or no courtship behavior, while animals implanted with ATD + 17ß estradiol (E2 ) or blank implants exhibited normal courtship. In addition, neurons in the pathways critical in the control of reproductive behavior were examined using the Golgi method. Examination of brains collected upon emergence revealed animals implanted with ATD had a significantly reduced number of dendritic spines compared to controls and animals treated with ATD + E2 . This study provides the first documentation that courtship behavior and mating in the male red-sided garter snake appears to be controlled not by LTD alone, but in conjunction with sex steroid hormones. Moreover, behavioral data suggest that the aromatization of androgens during LTD appears to be critical for the initiation of reproductive behavior in the male red-sided garter snakes.

RESUMO

Reproduction is a major component of an animal's life history strategy. Species with plasticity in their reproductive biology are likely to be successful as an invasive species, as they can adapt their reproductive effort during various phases of a biological invasion. Silver carp (Hypophthalmicthys molitrix), an invasive cyprinid in North America, display wide variation in reproductive strategies across both their native and introduced ranges, though the specifics of silver carp reproduction in the Illinois River have not been established. We assessed reproductive status using histological and endocrinological methods in silver carp between April and October 2018, with additional histological data from August to October 2017. Here, we show that female silver carp are batch spawners with asynchronous, indeterminate oocyte recruitment, while male silver carp utilize a determinate pattern of spermatogenesis which ceases in the early summer. High plasma testosterone levels in females could be responsible for regulating oocyte development. Our results suggest that silver carp have high spawning activity in the early summer (May-June), but outside of the peak spawning period, female silver carp can maintain spawning-capable status by adjusting rates of gametogenesis and atresia in response to environmental conditions, while males regress their gonads as early as July. The results of this study are compared to reports of silver carp reproduction in other North American rivers as well as in Asia.

RESUMO

In this review article, information about the development of the hypothalamo-hypophyseal axis, endocrine control of metamorphosis, and hormonal and pheromonal involvements in reproductive behavior in some amphibian species is assembled from the works conducted mainly by our research group. The hypothalamic and pituitary development was studied using Bufo embryos and larvae. The primordium of the epithelial hypophysis originates at the anterior neural ridge and migrates underneath the brain to form a Rathke's pouch-like structure. The hypothalamo-hypophyseal axis develops under the influence of thyroid hormone (TH). For the morphological and functional development of the median eminence, which is a key structure in the transport of regulatory hormones to the pituitary, contact of the adenohypophysis with the undeveloped median eminence is necessary. For the development of proopiomelanocortin-producing cells, contact of the pituitary primordium with the infundibulum is required. The significance of avascularization in terms of the function of the intermediate lobe of the pituitary was evidenced with transgenic Xenopus frogs expressing a vascular endothelial growth factor in melanotropes. Metamorphosis progresses via the interaction of TH, adrenal corticosteroids, and prolactin (PRL). We emphasize that PRL has a dual role: modulation of the speed of metamorphic changes and functional development of organs for adult life. A brief description about a novel type of PRL (1B) that was detected was made. A possible reason why the main hypothalamic factor that stimulates the release of thyrotropin is not thyrotropin-releasing hormone, but corticotropin-releasing factor is considered in light of the fact that amphibians are poikilotherms. As regards the reproductive behavior in amphibians, studies were focused on the courtship behavior of the newt, Cynops pyrrhogaster. Male newts exhibit a unique courtship behavior toward sexually developed conspecific females. Hormonal interactions eliciting this behavior and hormonal control of the courtship pheromone secretion are discussed on the basis of our experimental results.

RESUMO

Reproductive behavior is the behavior related to the production of offspring and includes all aspects from the establishment of mating systems, courtship, sexual behavior, and parturition to the care of young. In this chapter, I outline the hormonal regulation of the estrous cycle, followed by a description of the neural regulation of female sexual behavior. Ovarian hormones play an important role in the induction of ovulation and behavioral estrus, in which they interact closely with several neurotransmitters and neuropeptides to induce sexual behavior. This chapter discusses the latest research on the role of estrogen, progesterone, serotonin, dopamine, noradrenaline, oxytocin, and GABA in female mating behavior. In addition, the most relevant brain areas, such as the preoptic area and the ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus, in which these regulations take place, are discussed.

RESUMO

Fertility transition occurred in a short period of time in Brazilian the absence of family planning programs, and most noticeable, in a context of illegality in the provision of means of fertility self-regulation. These events did not happen without consequences. Based in the literature and facts registered during that time, the paper first discusses how the resistance to the implementation of family planning programs from the 1960s to the 1980s have contributed to the unbalanced contraceptive method mix in the 1990's. Secondly, the paper will discuss problems around contraceptive data collection in the National Health Survey, and, performing an adjustment of the data, we analyze trends in the use of contraceptive methods from 1986 to 2013, showing that method mix continues to be very concentrated in the same two methods, an even more outdated scheme, with the daily pill exchanging first place with female sterilization. Finally, the paper discusses some fertility characteristics associated with the outdated contraceptive mix, still prevailing at the end of fertility transition, arguing that this could be avoided or minimized if policies and laws are based in reproductive rights of all people only.

Teenage childbearing has been increasing, especially among girls aged 10 to 14 years, slowing the improvements in public health and propelling social marginalization. The objective of this article is to study adolescent pregnancy in Colombia and suggest possible policy interventions. The study comprises univariate and multivariate analyses that examine trends and correlates of teenage childbirth and related infant mortality in Colombia between 2001-2011 using complete vital statistics. The study compares, by relative risk analysis as well, two groups of teenage mothers, aged 10 to 14 years and 15 to 19 years, with a reference group of mothers aged 20 to 34 years. During the study period, the average of annual birth rates increased 2.6% and 0.8% in mothers aged 10 to 14 years, and 15 to 19 years respectively, whereas it declined at an average rate of 0.2% annually for mothers aged 20 to 35 years. Simultaneously, while the overall rate declined, the infant mortality rate (IMR) of the youngest group was consistently higher during the entire period compared to the IMR of older groups. Compared with the other groups, mothers aged from 10 to 14 were more likely to be unmarried, rural, indigenous or afro-descendant, and have less access to health care. The study demonstrates that early teenage childbirth is a growing challenge at least in Colombia. These mothers are at higher risk of losing their babies while being poor and remaining poor. The study suggests the need for policy that targets appropriate education and health care to poor girls as early as age 10 and even younger.

ABSTRACT The purpose of this paper is to present a discussion of a preliminary situation-specific theory of adaptation to high-risk childbearing for expectant and new mothers and fathers. Roy's Adaptation Model guided the design and conduct of the pilot study of correlates of maternal and paternal functional status from which the theory was derived. The conceptual-theoretical-empirical structure for the study is displayed in a diagram. The concepts of the theory-functional status, physical symptoms, physical energy, psychological symptoms, and relationship quality--are identified and defined, and their linkages are identified. Implications for testing and potential use of the theory in nursing practice are discussed.

To evaluate the role of preovulatory progesterone on canine sexual behavior and the course of proestrus and estrus, seven bitches in spontaneous cycles were treated with aglepristone for temporary elimination of progesterone action. Aglepristone was administered at the dose 10 mg/kg b.m., two times 24 hours apart, beginning in early proestrus when progesterone concen- tration was ⟨0.5 ng/ml. Seven untreated bitches served as a control group. Reproductive sexual behavior (standing behavior, display vulva, tail deviation) was evaluated according to behavioral score. Cytologic, clinical and vaginoscopic examinations and progesterone measurements were used for the determination of proestrus and estrus and estimation of ovulation time. Although, a similar pattern and magnitude of sexual behavior were observed in both groups, the duration of a total reproductive behavior was significantly extended (28.71 ± 2.06 vs 17.00 ± 2.45, p ⟨0.05) in experimental group; similarly, the length of cytologic estrus (23.86 ± 3.02 vs 11.14 ± 2.41, p ⟨0.05) was prolonged in treated bitches. In contrast, ovulation rate, duration of proestrus did not differ between the groups (p >0.05). We conclude, that during the canine estrus cycle the preovulatory progesterone terminates the duration of reproductive behavior and cytologic estrus.

RESUMO

This research evaluated the possible influence of exposure of male goats to estrogenized female goats ("female effect") upon males' sexual behavior [appetitive (ASB) & consummatory (CSB)], as well as the induction of reproductive activity of crossbred dairy female goats exposed to such treated males ("male effect") during the early and deep anestrous periods. Crossbred dairy adult male goats (n = 12; 24-48 mo. old) and 80 anovulatory crossbred dairy adult female goats (34-50 mo. old) were used during two experimental periods: March to April and April to May. First, males were separated into four groups (n = 3 each), roughly homogeneous regarding body weight and body condition score and randomly assigned to four experimental groups. The first two groups included males + estrogenized females, then such males were exposed to anestrous females either during March (group 1: three males; 20 females; EFEM-MAR), or during April (group 2: three males; 20 females; EFEM-APR). The second two groups were respective control groups: Males + non-treated-anestrous females, and then such males exposed to acyclic females either during March (group 3: three males; 20 females; CONT-MAR) or April (group 4: three males; 20 females; CONT-APR). Once the male-to-female contact was established, both odor (ODT) and behavior (BEHT) tests (2 d × 2 h) were performed during both anestrous periods. On day 10 after introduction of the males, in both anestrous periods, one ultrasonography scanning ("US") was performed to quantify the presence, number and size of corpus luteum (US-CL) to determine the effectiveness of the "male effect" and indicators of ovarian activity. Then, on day 45 after introduction of the males, a second US was performed to evaluate pregnancy rate (US-PREG). The EFEM-males, regardless of the phase of the anestrous cycle, had an increased (P < 0.05) odor intensity with respect to the control groups. In addition, while an increased (P < 0.05) ASB occurred in the EFEM-males, no CSB differences (P > 0.05) arose when treatments were compared, neither in March-April nor in April-May. The EFEM-males exposed to acyclic goats in March-April (i.e. early anestrous period), promoted not only the largest estrus and ovulatory responses (P < 0.05), but also the largest pregnancy rate (P < 0.05) in these previously anestrus goats, suggesting that in April-May (i.e. profound anestrous), the presence of active males was not enough to completely suppress cyclic reproductive arrest. This study generates interesting out-of-season reproductive outcomes in a goat population with a large proportion of highly seasonal dairy breeds (i.e. Alpine, Saanen and Toggenburg), augmenting the possibility to expand milk production and the economic income of goat producers across the year. Besides, this practice may serve as an interesting reproductive tool to increase the sustainability of marginal goat production systems under semiarid conditions.
