RESUMO

Real-life pollution usually involves simultaneous co-exposure to different chemicals. Metals and drugs are frequently and abundantly released into the environment, where they interact and bioaccumulate. Few studies analyze potential interactions between metals and pharmaceuticals in these mixtures, although their joint effects cannot be inferred from their individual properties. We have previously demonstrated that the mixture (PC) of the metals Cd and Hg, the metalloid As and the pharmaceuticals diclofenac (DCF) and flumequine (FLQ) impairs hepatic proteostasis. To gain a deeper vision of how PC affects mouse liver homeostasis, we evaluated here the effects of PC exposure upon some biochemical and morphometric parameters, and on the transcriptional profiles of selected group of genes. We found that exposure to PC caused oxidative damage that exceeded the antioxidant capacity of cells. The excessive oxidative stress response resulted in an overabundance of reducing equivalents, which hindered the metabolism and transport of metabolites, including cholesterol and bile acids, between organs. These processes have been linked to metabolic and inflammatory disorders, cancer, and neurodegenerative diseases. Therefore, our findings suggest that unintended exposure to mixtures of environmental pollutants may underlie the etiology of many human diseases. Fortunately, we also found that a diet enriched with selenium mitigated the harmful effects of this combination of toxicants.

RESUMO

Cadmium (Cd), a highly toxic heavy metal for crops in China, poses a significant threat to rice cultivation. It is crucial to identify the genotypes with robust resistance to heavy metals, including Cd, in rice. The experiment was conducted to examine the mitigation effect of silicon (Si) on Cd toxicity levels in Se-enriched Z3055B and non-Se-enriched G46B rice genotypes. A basal dose of Si improved the growth and the quality of rice significantly by reducing the Cd content in rice roots, stems, leaves and grains and increased the yield, biomass and selenium (Se) content of brown rice in both genotypes. Additionally, Se content in brown rice and polished rice was notably higher in Se-enriched rice than in non-Se-enriched rice, with the highest amount at 0.129 mg/kg and 0.085 mg/kg, respectively. The results demonstrated that a basal fertilizer concentration of 30 mg/kg of Si was more effective in reducing Cd transport from roots to shoots in Se-enriched rice than in non-Se-enriched rice genotypes. Therefore, it can be concluded that Se-enriched rice genotypes are a viable option for food crop production in Cd-contaminated areas.

RESUMO

Selenium-enriched green tea (Se-GT) is of increasing interest because of its health benefits, but its quality components obtained limited research. In this study, Enshi Se-enriched green tea (ESST, high-Se green tea), Pingli Se-enriched green tea (PLST, low-Se green tea), and Ziyang green tea (ZYGT, common green tea) were subjected to sensory evaluation, chemical analysis, and aroma profiling. Chemical profiles in Se-GT were consistent with the taste attributes of the sensory analysis. 9 volatiles were identified as key odorants of Se-GT based on multivariate analysis. Correlations between Se and quality components were further assessed and highly Se-related compounds contents in these three tea samples were compared. The results showed that most amino acids and non-gallated catechins were highly negatively correlated with Se, while gallated catechins exhibited strong positive correlation with Se. And there were strong and significant associations between the key aroma compounds and Se. Moreover, 11 differential markers were found between Se-GTs and common green tea, including catechin, serine, glycine, threonine, l-theanine, alanine, valine, isoleucine, leucine, histidine, and lysine. These findings provide great potential for quality evaluation of Se-GT.

RESUMO

Se-polysaccharide (Se-GFP-22) from Se-enriched Grifola frondosa has double and cooperative activities of polysaccharide and Se. To delineate the underlying mechanism and signaling cascade involved in immune-stimulatory property of Se-GFP-22, the production of cellular mediators and key proteins in signaling pathway was examined. Results showed that Se-GFP-22 exhibited no cytotoxic and had a high capacity to promote macrophage phagocytosis, up-regulate interleukin-2 (IL-2), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interferon-γ (IFN-γ), and nitric oxide (NO) productions, as well as the relative messenger RNA (mRNA) expressions. In Se-GFP-22-induced macrophages, intracellular superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity was significantly increased to protect cells from oxidative injury. However, Se-GFP-22 induced macrophage activation was suppressed when the toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) signaling pathway was blocked by a specific TLR4 inhibitor. According to the western blot analysis and the use of specific inhibitors against the mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK) signaling pathway, we speculated that Se-GFP-22 activated RAW264.7 macrophages through the TLR4-mediated MAPK signaling pathway. This study provides a molecular basis for the potential of Se-GFP-22 as a novel immune-stimulatory agent.

RESUMO

As an essential trace element in the human body, selenium (Se) has various physiological activities, such as antioxidant and anticancer activity. Selenium-enriched proteins/peptides (SePs/SePPs) are the primary forms of Se in plants and animals, and they are the vital carriers of its physiological activities. On the basis of current research, this review systematically describes the extraction methods (aqueous, alkaline, enzymatic, auxiliary, etc.) and detection methods (HPLC-MS/MS, GC-ICP-MS, etc.) for SePs/SePPs in plants. Their bioavailability and bioactivity, and the effect of processing are also included. Our review provides a comprehensive understanding and theoretical guidance for the utilization of selenium-enriched proteins/peptides.

RESUMO

Abstract The supplementation of Selenium-enriched probiotics is effective in reducing oxidative stress and maintaining meat quality stability in broiler chicken especially under heat stress. An experimental study was conducted to perform Comparative analysis of Selenium yeast with inorganic Se in broilers under heat stress. A total of 120 broilers chicks of one day were assigned to 4 groups each consisting 30 chicks fed on same basal diet but different selenium sources. The basal diet of group D1 was not supplemented with Se source (Negative control), group D2 basal diet was supplemented with inorganic selenium (Sodium selenite 0.22mg/Kg starter phase and 0.15mg/Kg finisher phase), group D3 basal diet was supplemented with commercially available organic selenium (Seleno-methionine 0.22mg/Kg starter phase and 0.15mg/Kg finisher phase) and group D4 basal diet was supplemented with self-developed organic selenium (Se-enriched yeast 0.22mg/Kg starter phase and 0.15mg/Kg finisher phase). The performance parameters i.e. feed intake (FI), live body weight (BW) and FCR were not significantly (p>0.05) effected by selenium supplementation in the starter phase but were significantly (p<0.05) effected in the finisher phase. Selenium supplementation significantly (p<0.05) effected serum Se level in different supplemented groups. Higher serum Se value (58.20±0.06) was recorded in D4 group. Similarly significantly lower selenium value was recorded for D4 and higher was recorded for D1 (11.36±0.08). However lower serum Paraoxonase (PON) value was recorded for D4 (13.24±0.01) and higher for D1 (13.33±0.03). Comparatively self-developed Se enriched yeast increased the Se accumulation and improved antioxidant system. Glutathione peroxidase (GPx) was found higher in D4 (12.333±0.03) followed by D3, D2 and D1 respectively. Whereas superoxide dismutase (SOD) was significantly lower (p<0.05) in D4 (0.1437±0.003) followed by D3 (0.1457±0.002). Selenium supplementation increased the bird's survival rate. Birds fed on Se enriched yeast showed higher Se deposition and better antioxidant capacity as compared to other sources of selenium. Se-enriched yeast displayed an improved result on Se deposition in tissues, and oxidative capacity, meat tenderness and immune response level as compared to other sources of selenium.

Chrysanthemum morifolium is a well-known edible medicinal plant in Asia and some other regions. Content of selenium in Se-enriched C. morifolium (SeCM) is significantly higher than that in traditional C. morifolium (non-Se-enriched C. morifolium, TCM). In order to understand health effects of SeCM, its chemical composition, lifespan-prolonging activities, and impacts on antioxidant defense-related gene expressions of model organism D. melanogaster were systematically studied. A total of eight phenols, including luteolin-7-O-glucoside, linarin, luteolin, apigenin, diosmetin, acacetin, 3-caffeoylquinic acid and 4,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid, were identified in SeCM extract. Compared with TCM, SeCM exhibited superior antioxidant properties. Intake of SeCM dramatically reduced malondialdehyde level and increased activities of endogenous antioxidant enzymes in fruit flies. SeCM was able to upregulate gene expressions of Cu/Zn-superoxide dismutase, Mn-superoxide dismutase and hydrogen peroxide catalase, and extend lifespans of fruit flies. Comparatively high antioxidant capacities and lifespan-prolonging activities of SeCM might be attributed to its abundant phenols and selenium, which probably ameliorated accumulation of free radicals and susceptibility to oxidative stress. These findings provide clues on further exploitation and utilization of Se-enriched C. morifolium. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Chrysanthemum morifolium has been used for nutraceutical and curative purposes in China for thousands of years. Se-enriched C. morifolium typically contains more selenium than traditional C. morifolium, and is widely consumed in Asia and some other regions. Selenium is an essential micronutrient for humans, and selenium deficiency may result in several diseases such as myocardial infarction. SeCM is one of important selenium supplements. In this study, SeCM was found to upregulate gene expressions of Cu/Zn-superoxide dismutase, Mn-superoxide dismutase, and hydrogen peroxide catalase, and extend lifespans of experimental animals. These results provide supporting information for developing SeCM-based functional foods with distinct health benefits.

RESUMO

Selenium (Se)-enriched green tea (Se-Te) has been recognized as a possible source of Se supplements, while the effect of Se enrichment on function of polyphenols in green tea is still unclear. In this study, a pseudo-targeted metabolomics strategy was carried out to reveal the regulatory mechanism of polyphenols extracted from Se-Te and regular green tea (Re-Te) on inflammatory response at cellular level. A novel analysis strategy using UHPLC/ESI Q-Orbitrap combined with MS-IOP was applied to profile the dynamic changes of metabolites in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 macrophages during polyphenols incubation. A total of 128 characteristic variables (VIP > 1, p < 0.05) were screened in Se-Te group and the results of bioinformatics analysis and quantitative research indicated that in addition to the 6 conventional immune protective pathways involved in tea polyphenols, Se-enriched polyphenols were also participated in 3 unique antioxidant enzyme activation pathways, including phenylalanine, tyrosine and tryptophan biosynthesis, phenylalanine metabolism and pantothenate and CoA biosynthesis. The result of weight calculation based on topological analysis indicated that the promoting synthesis of antioxidant enzymes was the main mechanism of Se-Te polyphenols to inhibit inflammation. However, compared with Re-Te group, the intracellular B vitamin pathway in Se-Te group was disturbed, which is related to the fact that Se supplementation can promote the synthesis of selenoprotein and catalyze the reduction of thioredoxin by NADPH, thus blocking the signaling pathways of B vitamins. This study comprehensively explored the immune protective mechanism of polyphenols extracted from Se-Te and Re-Te under natural growth conditions, which could give a better understanding of the potential nutritional value of Se-Te as a widely used Se supplement.

RESUMO

As a functional beverage, selenium (Se)-enriched green tea (Se-GT) has gained increasing popularity for its superior properties in promoting health. In this study, we compared the brewing characteristics, in vitro digestion profiles, and protective effects on neurotoxicity induced through the amyloid-beta (Aß) peptide of two typical Se-GTs (Enshi Yulu (ESYL) and Ziyang Maojian (ZYMJ), representing the typical low-Se green tea and high-Se green tea, respectively). ESYL and ZYMJ showed similar chemical component leaching properties with the different brewing methods, and the optimized brewing conditions were 5 min, 90 °C, 50 mL/g, and first brewing. The antioxidant activities of the tea infusions had the strongest positive correlation with the tea polyphenols among all of the leaching substances. The tea infusions of ESYL and ZYMJ showed similar digestive behaviors, and the tea polyphenols in the tea infusions were almost totally degraded or transferred after 150 min of dynamic digestion. Studies conducted in a cell model of Alzheimer's disease (AD) showed that the extract from the high-Se green tea was more effective for neuroprotection compared with the low-Se green tea. Overall, our results revealed the best brewing conditions and digestion behaviors of Se-GT and the great potential of Se-GT or Se-enriched green extract (Se-GTE) to be used as promising AD-preventive beverages or food ingredients.

RESUMO

Natural organic selenium (Se) has multiple physiological health benefits and has become a hotspot of research in recent years. In this study, the Se-enriched antioxidant peptides were purified from Se-enriched oyster hydrolysate. Three novel Se-enriched antioxidant peptides LLVSeMY (685.2953 Da), MMDSeML (687.1875 Da) and VSeMDSeML (703.1599 Da) were identified from fraction F6-4, which all exhibited strong cellular antioxidant activity (CAA) with EC50 values of 0.739, 0.423, and 0.395 µg/mL, respectively. These three Se-enriched antioxidant peptides (0.025 mg/mL) could significantly enhanced cell viability to 84.60 ± 3.32% âˆ¼ 86.18 ± 1.36% compared with the AAPH injury group (75.99 ± 0.79%), and the cytoprotective effects were even better than that of GSH (80.47 ± 2.78%). Moreover, these three Se-enriched peptides also significantly protected HepG2 cells from AAPH-induced oxidative injury by inhibiting ROS production and enhancing the activities of antioxidant enzymes. The molecular docking results showed that these three Se-enriched peptides can form stable hydrogen and hydrophobic bonds with key amino acid residues of Keap1 protein, thereby potentially regulating the Keap1-Nrf2 pathway. In conclusion, the three novel Se-enriched oyster antioxidant peptides are expected to be used in medicine or functional food, providing a new theoretical basis for the high-value utilization of natural organic Se.

RESUMO

Selenium-enriched mung bean (Se-MB) is a combination of mung bean (MB) and selenium (Se), which have a variety of potential biological activities. However, little is known about the skincare activity of Se-MB. The chemical composition of Se-MB fermentation broth (Se-MBFB) was analyzed to investigate the whitening, moisturizing, and anti-aging activities of Se-MBFB. The tyrosinase inhibition, anti-melanogenic in melanocytes (B16F10 cells), and moisturizing effect in human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs) were analyzed. Besides, the free radical scavenging activity of Se-MBFB was assessed in vitro. To verify the in vivo effects and the potential of practical applications of Se-MBFB, a clinical trial was conducted on the participants: 31 Chinese women aged 25-60 years, with no pigmentation disorder, no illness, no history of hypersensitivity reaction, and no use of skincare product on the face. The participants used an Se-MBFB masque for 15-20 min after cleaning the face. The measurement points were Week 0, 2, and 4 (W0, W2, and W4) after using the masque, and target sites were cheek and canthus. The following parameters were recorded on the target sites at each visit: melanin index, skin color, cuticle moisture content, transepidermal water loss, and crow's feet. The results demonstrated that Se-MBFB was rich in polyphenols, peptides, and γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), displayed significant free radical scavenging and tyrosinase inhibiting activities, decreased the synthesis of melanin, and upregulated the aquaporin-3 (AQP3) expression. The test of the Se-MBFB mask showed that after 4 weeks of using the Se-MBFB facemask, the faces of the participants became whiter with reduced wrinkles and increased moisture content. Se-MB possessed the excellent whitening, moisturizing, and antioxidant efficacy, which could lay a scientific foundation for utilization and development of skincare products of Se-MB and its related industrial cosmetics products.

RESUMO

We have found that the Reclamation merino sheep in Southern Xinjiang, China, showed emaciation, stiff limbs, instability, and sudden death, which is related to the impairment of immune function and antioxidant capacity caused by selenium (Se) deficiency. The experiments were to study the effects of Se-enriched malt on the immune and antioxidant function in Se-deprived Reclamation merino sheep in Southern Xinjiang, China. The samples of soil and forage had been collected from tested pastures, and animal tissues were also collected in tested animals. The mineral content of soil, forage, and animal tissues was measured in the collected samples. Hematological indexes and biochemical values were also examined. The findings showed that the Se contents were extremely lower in affected soil and forage than those from healthy soil and forage (P < 0.01). The Se contents in affected blood and wool were also extremely lower than those from healthy blood and wool (P < 0.01). The values in glutathione peroxidase and total antioxidant capacity in affected serum samples were also extremely lower than those from healthy serum samples, and levels of malondialdehyde, total nitric oxide synthase, and lipid peroxide were extremely higher in affected serum samples than those from healthy serum samples (P < 0.01). Meanwhile, the values of hemoglobin, packed cell volume, and platelet count from affected blood were extremely lower than those from healthy blood (P < 0.01). The levels of interleukin (IL)-1ß, IL-2, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, immunoglobulin A, and immunoglobulin G in serum were extremely decreased in the affected Reclamation merino sheep (P < 0.01). The levels of IL-6 and immunoglobulin M in serum were extremely reduced in the affected Reclamation merino sheep compared to healthy animals (P < 0.01). The animals in affected pastures were orally treated with Se-enriched malt, and the Se contents in blood were extremely increased (P < 0.01). The immune function and antioxidant indicator returned to within the healthy range. Consequently, our findings were indicated that the disorder of the Reclamation merino sheep was mainly caused by the Se deficiency in soil and forage. The Se-enriched malt could not only markedly increase the Se content in blood but also much improve the immune function and the antioxidant capacity in the Se-deprived Reclamation merino sheep.

RESUMO

This study aims to quantify the amount of selenium (Se) generally consumed in the Chinese diet via Se-enriched eggs, as well as the levels of lead (Pb), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), and mercury (Hg) in such eggs, and to assess the health risks associated with their consumption in China. As would be expected, Se was found to present significantly higher geometric mean levels in the Se-enriched eggs (0.464 mg/kg) than in normal eggs (0.304 mg/kg); however, Se concentrations were also closely related to the Cr and Pb in the eggs, with the Pb levels found to exceed the Chinese standard limit. Therefore, the quantity of Pb in Se-enriched eggs requires attention. According to estimated daily intake (EDI) evaluations of Se and heavy metals, levels were found to be highest via children for all metals in the eggs, In adults, the total target hazard quotient (TTHQ) for Se, Pb, Cd, As, Hg, and Cr contamination in eggs were calculated to be below the standard limit of 1, thus confirming that Se-enriched eggs may be considered safe for consumption by adults. However, the THQ of as was higher than 1 in the children aged of 2-4 years, and the TTHQ values were higher than 1 in boys aged 2-9 and girls aged 2-8, indicating a significant non-carcinogenic health risk due to the intake of maximum metals in the eggs samples. Thus, the safety of selenium-enriched eggs for children should be of wide concern. In conclusion, while Se-enriched eggs offer high levels of selenium, their health safety is concerning.

RESUMO

Cadmium (Cd) is an element injurious for human health and is possibly toxic to organisms at minor concentrations. While some of other trace metallic elements have antagonistic features to it. One of them is the interaction between selenium (Se) and Cd in plant different organs. Literature review disclosed that the intake of Se to some extent can reduce the accumulation of Cd in plants, while the research on of trace metallic elements (Cd) and Se-enriched food (rice) in the living body has rarely been reported. This study intended to explore whether there was a mitigating effect of Se-enriched rice on mice poisoned with Cd. A mouse model of low-dose and high-dose Cd poisoning was established (supplemented with cadmium chloride(CdCl2·2½H20)), followed by feeding two groups (1) Se-enriched rice and (2) setting an equal amount of inorganic Se group. After that, the impact of Se-enriched rice on the antioxidant activity was evaluated. The Se-enriched diet enhanced the total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and enzyme activities of GSH peroxidase (GSH-Px) in mice livers and kidney whereas significantly decreased the malondialdehyde (MDA) contents. Moreover, the degree of physiological damage in mice with low cadmium poisoning was significantly alleviated, and the expression of antioxidant genes (Nrf-2, GPX1, TrxR2, TNF-2) was increased. In conclusion, the Se-enriched diet has a positive effect on the biological effects in mice, and it can be used as a daily diet to resist damage to the body's low Cd state and support enzymatic antioxidant systems by eliminating oxidative injury.

RESUMO

The effects of selenium (Se) addition methods on antioxidant activity and flavor properties of fermented Pleurotus eryngii (P. eryngii) using Lactobacillus plantarum (L. plantarum) inoculated and natural fermentation were investigated. After fermentation, the Se-enrichment rates in fruiting bodies of Se-added fermented P. eryngii were all more than 50%. Se addition, especially in the form of Se-enriched L. plantarum inoculation, had a significantly positive effect on total phenolic content and DPPH radical scavenging activity. Non-volatiles analysis revealed that the highest ration of lactic acid to acetic acid and the highest umami intensity were observed in P. eryngii fermented by inoculating Se-enriched L. plantarum (Lp-Se). Principal components analysis and cluster analysis of volatiles clearly separated Se-treated and plain experiments, which mainly due to dissimilarities in alcohols, aldehydes and ketones. Additionally, Lp-Se obtained the highest alcohols, especially 1-octen-3-ol with mushroom flavor. In short, Se-enriched L. plantarum inoculation could produce high-quality fermented P. eryngii.

RESUMO

Oxidative stress triggered by hyperglycemia is thought to be a major factor in the development of liver disease during diabetes mellitus (DM). The aim of this study was to determine the antioxidant capacity of aqueous extracts of selenium-enriched Auricularia auricular (AESA) and further investigate the hepatic protection and potential mechanism of AESA in a mouse model of diabetes. An in vitro antioxidant assay confirmed that AESA exhibited better antioxidant capacity characterized by increased reducing power and scavenging capacity of free radicals, such as diphenyl picrylhydrazyl radical, hydroxyl radical, and superoxide radical. The diabetic model was induced by high-fat diet combined with a single injection of streptozotocin in C57BL/6 mice. Our results showed that AESA treatment improved diabetes-induced disorders of lipid metabolisms and alleviated liver damage in diabetic mice. Furthermore, the antioxidant enzyme activities of glutathione peroxidase and catalase in liver were increased and malondialdehyde level was decreased with AESA treatment compared with those in the DM group. In parallel, AESA significantly reduced the contents of tumor necrosis factor-alpha and interleukin-1beta in liver in comparison with the DM group. In addition, western blot results showed that the expression of receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE), phospho-c-Jun NH2-terminal kinase, phospho-extracellular signal-regulated kinase, and phospho-p38 kinase were remarkably decreased in AESA treatment group compared with DM group. Taken together, supplementation of AESA may effectively attenuate diabetic hepatopathology by exerting antioxidant function through the RAGE/mitogen-activated protein kinase pathway.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The anticancer effects of cordyceps on various tumors have been reported. However, little is known about the role of selenium (Se)-enriched Cordyceps militaris in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). In this study, the effects of Se-enriched Cordyceps militaris on cell proliferation, cell apoptosis and cell cycle in NSCLC cell line NCI-H292 and A549 were investigated. METHODS: CCK-8 assay was used to determine the appropriate concentrations of Se-enriched Cordyceps militaris in NSCLC (namely NCI-H292 and A549) cells. Colony formation assay, flow cytometric and Hoechst 33342 staining assays, and flow cytometric analysis were separately employed to assess the effect of increased Se-enriched Cordyceps militaris on NSCLC cell viability, cell apoptosis and cell-cycle distribution. Finally, the qPCR and Western blot assays were, respectively, applied to evaluate the effects of Se-enriched Cordyceps militaris on the expression of pro-apoptotic member BAX and the anti-apoptotic member BCL-2, as well as of G2/M cell cycle regulatory proteins CDK1 and cyclin B1. RESULTS: The concentration of Se-enriched Cordyceps militaris was 0, 4, 8, 12 mg/mL for NCI-H292 cells, and 0, 12.5, 25, 50 mg/mL for A549 cells. NSCLC cells treated with increased Se-enriched Cordyceps militaris showed the inhibited cell viability. Se-enriched Cordyceps militaris induced NSCLC cell apoptosis in concentration-dependent manner. Consistently, Se-enriched Cordyceps militaris diminished the ratio of anti-apoptotic member BCL-2 and pro-apoptotic member BAX at mRNA and protein levels in NSCLC cells. The percentage in G2/M phase was increased in NSCLC cells treated with increased Se-enriched Cordyceps militaris. Downregulation of G2/M cell cycle regulatory proteins CDK1 and cyclin B1 at mRNA and protein levels in NSCLC cells further confirmed the effects of Se-enriched Cordyceps militaris on cell cycle. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated the inhibitory role of Se-enriched Cordyceps militaris in cell proliferation and its facilitating role in cell apoptosis and cell cycle in NSCLC cells, suggesting an alternative therapeutic strategy for NSCLC treatment.

RESUMO

The synergistic effects of trace elements selenium (Se) and cadmium (Cd) are well known. But the reasons for the trending accumulation behavior in both trace elements are under debate in the scientific community. The present investigation was conducted to evaluate the impact of heat units on the accumulation behavior in two environments. Se and Cd were applied in three groups (T0; 0:0, T1; 0.4:1, T2; 1:2) mg kg-1. As the time of planting and heat units consumed by the crop to attain its physiological maturity appears to be different. The sunlight may contribute as an important manipulating factor for the accumulation of heavy metals in the plant. The results of the present study indicated that the behavior in the accumulation pattern of both elements appears to be distinct in the same material. The increased fertilizer treatment in soil bulk linearly increased the metal contents in rice grain. The studies between different plant parts disclosed panicle as the primary reservoir for Se and Cd accumulation. The plant sown earlier accumulates more Se than Cd while the plants uptake more Cd when sown 1 month later. The plant completes the critical developmental phases (tillering, heading, and flowering) within 20-30 days interval depending on the variety. But the late-sown plants complete these transitional phases within 9-10 days interval ultimately result in less utilization of heat units. These quick transitional changes may lead to the uptake of an ample amount of Cd contents in rice grain even at a low level of Cd stress (1 and 2 mg kg-1), making rice unsafe for edible purposes. The proper time of planting could be effective in timely acclimatization of Se and Cd sequestration and translocation in rice various components. Graphical Abstract.
