OBJECTIVE: To compare the reliability, usability, and efficiency of video versus print instructions to teach parents a procedural measurement task. We hypothesized that videos would outperform print in all outcomes. STUDY DESIGN: This cross-sectional study included parents/caregivers of children aged 0-18 years with deep vein thrombosis attending the Thrombosis Clinic at The Hospital for Sick Children for post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS) assessment. Participants were randomly assigned to three instruction types: (i) video, which followed the technique used by clinicians; (ii) long pamphlet, which also followed the clinicians' technique; and (iii) short pamphlet, which explained a simplified technique. After measuring their children's arms or legs using the randomly assigned material, participants completed a usability questionnaire. The reliability of the instructions was estimated by comparing parents/caregivers versus clinicians' measurements using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Reliability, usability, and efficiency (time to task completion) were compared among the three instruction types. RESULTS: In total, 92 participants were randomized to video (n = 31), long pamphlet (n = 31), and short pamphlet (n = 30). While the video had the highest usability, the short pamphlet was the most reliable and efficient. ICCs were .17 (95% confidence interval [CI]: .00-.39) for the video, .53 (95% CI: .30-.72) for the long pamphlet, and .70 (95% CI: .50-.81) for the short pamphlet. CONCLUSION: Although the video had higher usability, the short/simplified print instruction was more reliable and efficient. However, the reliability of the short pamphlet was only moderate/good, suggesting that whenever possible, measurements should still be obtained by trained clinicians.

<b>Introduction:</b> Computer-based interactive techniques are becoming an important tool in medical education. One of the important benefits of the use of telemedicine in surgical training is the reduction of the number of people in the operating room. As shown in the studies, this can lead i.a. to the reduction in the risk of surgical site infections.<b>Aim:</b> The aim of this survey as held among fifth-year medical students at three academic centers was to assess the usefulness and effectiveness of telemedicine as a surgery-teaching tool.<b>Material and methods:</b> A transmission of a surgical procedure was carried out by each of the three participating centers according to a previously prepared schedule. Each transmission was preceded by the diagnostics, indications, and the course of the surgical procedure being discussed by the facilitator physician who also coordinated the transmission throughout the procedure. After the class, students received anonymous surveys consisting of fourteen questions as per the attached protocol so as to evaluate the class using the rating scale of 1 (the lowest rating) through 5 (the highest rating). The survey assessed the educational value (the knowledge acquired from the class), the form (interactivity, facilitator complicity), and the usefulness of the class for overall surgical education.<b>Results:</b> The survey was completed by 232 students, with 95% of respondents rating the usefulness of telemedicine classes in surgical education as very good or good. As many as 97% of students declared that the transmission had been a good or a very good tool in terms of delivery or adding to their knowledge of topographical anatomy and basic aspects of surgical technique. Higher ratings were given to the usefulness of comments and remarks by the facilitating physician (96% of very good or good ratings) who had been watching the procedure along with the students as compared to those provided by the operating physician (81%).<b>Discussion:</b> The use of telemedicine-based teaching models in surgical education facilitates a better view of the operating field for the students, greater accessibility of educational content delivered simultaneously to multiple groups of students, increased safety of the surgical procedure by reducing the number of people in the operating room as well as reduced burden on the operating physician (thanks to the introduction of class facilitator).<b>Conclusions:</b> In our opinion, the advantages of the presented teaching model are: better view (particularly in case of open procedures), ability to pinpoint surgical field structures (on the participants' and operator's monitors), absence of additional people (students) in the operating room (increasing the safety of the procedure and reducing the risk of surgical site infections) and the ability to go back to recorded operations and perform various types of educational analyses.

BACKGROUND: Due to the declining interest among medical students in pursuing a surgical career, the impact of demographic changes and the technical challenges, there is an increasing need to attract medical students to the surgical profession. Against this backdrop, a teaching project was developed to familiarize medical students with minimally invasive surgical techniques early in the preclinical education, thereby increasing the interest in surgery. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Within the framework of the regular anatomical dissection course the following modules on laparoscopic surgery were integrated: (1) clinical lecture on the technique and application of laparoscopy, (2) exploratory live laparoscopy on a body donor and (3) practical exercises on laparoscopic trainers. The impact of this teaching project on the interest in a surgical career and on the clinical anatomical understanding was evaluated among 295 participating medical students. RESULTS: The evaluation revealed a pronounced gender-independent interest in learning surgical skills early in the preclinical study phase. The teaching project led to a significantly increased interest in pursuing a surgical career. Moreover, the incorporation of laparoscopic teaching modules into the preclinical anatomy course enhanced the learning motivation and understanding of clinically relevant topographic anatomy. CONCLUSION: The integration of practical surgical content into preclinical anatomical education can increase the attractiveness of surgical disciplines and simultaneously optimize teaching of anatomy. Longitudinal studies are required to examine the sustainability of these clinical teaching modules in career decisions of medical students.

OBJECTIVE: In the surgery-focused field of obstetrics and gynecology (OB-GYN), the development of residents' skills is paramount. This study aims to evaluate the impact of an enhanced Peyton Four-Step Teaching Model on the foundational skill training of first-year OB-GYN residents. METHODS: Utilizing a cohort study design, we assessed 116 first-year residents from the OB-GYN residency program at Shengjing Hospital of China Medical University from June 2021 to June 2023. The 57 residents beginning their training in 2022 were part of the Refined Peyton (RP) group, introduced to the RP method; the 59 residents from 2021 served as the Traditional Teaching-mode (TTM) group, receiving conventional simulation-based instruction. Teaching effectiveness was assessed by comparing theoretical knowledge and skill performance assessments, National Medical Licensing Examination (NMLE) pass rates, direct observation of procedural skills (DOPS) one year post-training, and survey feedback. RESULTS: The theoretical knowledge scores for both groups were comparable at 78.78 ± 4.08 and 78.70 ± 3.83, with no significant difference (P = 0.76). However, the experimental group demonstrated superior performance in skill operation assessments, first-time NMLE pass rates, and DOPS evaluations one year after training [(77.05 ± 5.39) vs. (84.60 ± 5.65), 100.0% (57/57) vs. 86.4% (51/59), and (75.22 ± 3.56) vs. (82.54 ± 3.43)], as well as higher teaching satisfaction scores [(4.63 ± 0.46) vs. (3.92 ± 0.62)], with all differences being statistically significant (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The refined Peyton Four-Step Teaching Model significantly improves the immediate acquisition and long-term retention of clinical basic skills among OB-GYN residents, enhancing both teaching efficacy and resident satisfaction.

Objectives: We developed a new simulator for hands-on teaching of vascular surgical skills, the Leipzig Latex Patch Model (LPM). This study aimed to quantify the effectiveness and acceptance of the LPM evaluated by students, as well as evaluation of the results by experienced vascular surgeons. Methods: A prospective, single-center, single-blinded, randomized study was conducted. Fifty 5th-year medical students were randomized into two groups, first performing a patch suture on the LPM (study group) or established synthetic tissue model (control), then on porcine aorta. The second suture was videotaped and scored by two surgeons using a modified Objective Structured Assessment of Technical Skill (OSATS) score. We measured the time required for suturing; the participants completed questionnaires. Results: Participants required significantly less time for the second suture than the first (median: LPM 30 min vs. control 28.5 min, p = 0.0026). There was no significant difference in suture time between the groups (median: 28 min vs. 30 min, p = 0.2958). There was an increase in confidence from 28 % of participants before to 58 % after the course (p < 0.0001). The cost of materials per participant was 1.05€ (LPM) vs. 8.68€ (control). The OSATS-scores of the LPM group did not differ significantly from those of the control (median: 20.5 points vs. 23.0 points, p = 0.2041). Conclusions: This pilot study demonstrated an increase in technical skills and confidence through simulator-based teaching. Our data suggests comparable results of the LPM compared to the conventional model, as assessed by the OSATS-score. This low-cost, low-threshold training model for vascular suturing skills should make hands-on training more accessible to students and surgical residents. Key message: We developed and validated a low-cost, low-threshold training model for vascular suturing skills. This should make hands-on training more accessible to medical students and surgical residents in the future.

Parental food education has been recognized among the important factors influencing children's food literacy; however, the intrinsic mechanisms through which this influence occurs are unclear. In this study, a mediation model was constructed to explore this issue, using the parent-child relationship and learning motivation as mediating variables. In total, 204 children, aged 9-14 years old, responded to questionnaires on parental food education, children's food literacy, the parent-child relationship, and learning motivation, which were used to measure the variables of interest. The results showed that parental food education was significantly and positively related to the parent-child relationship, learning motivation, and children's food literacy; the parent-child relationship was significantly and positively related to learning motivation; and learning motivation was significantly and positively related to children's food literacy. Parental food education influenced children's food literacy in the following two main ways: the mediating role of learning motivation and the chain-mediating roles of the parent-child relationship and learning motivation. In addition, we attempt to explore the moderating role of the teaching stage between parental food education and the parent-child relationship, learning motivation, and children's food literacy. In this paper, we discuss possible guidelines for family food education and children's health based on the findings of the current study.

BACKGROUND: The transition from nursing students to working as new nurses can be a challenging process. This study aimed to assess the efficacy of a pedagogical approach amalgamating the think-aloud approach and case-based learning in the instructional rounds for new nurses. METHODS: Utilizing convenience sampling, new nurses were selected between 2020 and 2021 in China cancer hospital. A total of 98 participants agreed to participate, with 50 enrolled in 2020 as the control group and 48 in 2021 as the observation group. Across a span of weeks 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11, each clinical department conducted six teaching rounds. The observation group engaged in teaching rounds combining the think-aloud approach with case-based learning, whereas the control group solely utilized case-based learning. Disparities in case analysis scores and critical thinking ability between the two groups were scrutinized, alongside an analysis of learning strategies and the observation group feedback. RESULTS: The observation group exhibited superior case analysis scores (91.92 ± 6.33) and overall critical thinking ability scores (308.39 ± 35.88) in comparison to the control group, which scored (85.27 ± 5.39) and (275.11 ± 31.32) respectively, reflecting statistically significant variances (t = 1.868 ~ 6.361, P < 0.05). Predominant learning strategies employed in the observation group ranged from cognitive to meta-cognitive, followed by psychosocial strategies. During interviews focused on nurses' feedback on the learning process, themes emerged surrounding the enhancement of learning proficiency, invigoration of learning enthusiasm, and bolstering psychological well-being. CONCLUSION: The combination of think-aloud approach and case-based learning in nursing teaching rounds greatly improves the efficiency of training and the critical thinking acuity of new nurses. Concurrently, it facilitated an evaluation of learning strategies, thereby offering valuable insights for the nursing teaching rounds of new nurse.

Introduction: Nowadays, Clinical courses are meticulously structured to give students essential opportunities to elevate their professional qualifications,so that the patients' safety is protected and their conditions improve. Given the many challenges in the clinical environment of the operating room, this study was conducted to compare the impact of team-based and task-based learning methods in the clinical settings on the perceived competence of surgery and the quality of training from the operating room nursing students' point of view. Methods: This quasi-experimental study was conducted on fifty 5th semester operating room technology students at Hamadan University of Medical Sciences in 2023. In this study, students were selected using the convenience sampling method and placed in two educational groups (team-based and task-based) of 25 subjects using the matching method. After implementing the training process in the operating room setting, the data related to the study were collected using the valid questionnaires of perceived competence in surgery (Cronbach's alpha=0.86) and quality of education (Cronbach's alpha=0.94). Also, the data analysis was conducted at the descriptive and inferential (included independent t-test and analysis of covariance) statistics level using SPSS version 16 software. Results: Findings showed that the mean clinical training quality score was significantly higher in the team-based learning group than in the other group (P=0.014). Also, after the median intervention, the perceived competence score of surgery was higher in the task-based learning group than in the team-based group, and the difference in the average change of the competence score between the two groups was statistically significant (P<0.001). Conclusion: Based on the results, it is suggested that a task-based learning method should be used for the clinical instructors to increase level of the perceived competence of the surgery among operating roon nursing students.

INTRODUCTION: Radiological imaging has played an important role in diagnostic medicine for over a century, though it is known to contribute to dermatological conditions, cataracts, and cancer. The associated risk of harm has led to the introduction of protective regulations around the world. Present-day NHS clinicians are increasingly requesting and relying on diagnostic imaging. Knowledge surrounding the radiation doses of common radiological investigations and the associated risks is imperative, and on a global level has been found to be inadequate. Consequently, there is a need for the formal inclusion of teaching within training programmes. AIMS/OBJECTIVES: This prospective audit aims to establish the knowledge of radiation doses and risks of common radiological investigations of both medical students and referrers within four NHS Health Boards based in the North of Scotland. It also seeks to establish prior teaching and the preference for further educational interventions. AUDIT STANDARD: Referrers should have adequate knowledge of radiation doses and the risks associated with common radiological investigations. AUDIT TARGET: The standard should be achieved by 90% of referrers. METHODS: A 19-question online survey was devised to include subjective and objective questions on ionising radiation awareness, education preference, and respondent demographics, based on RCR (Royal College of Radiologists) audit criteria and previous studies. Data collection was conducted between the 22/02/23 to the 22/03/2023 and the questionnaire was distributed to senior medical students and radiological referrers of different grades within NHS Grampian, NHS Highland, NHS Shetland, and NHS Orkney. A descriptive analysis of the data was undertaken using Microsoft Excel Version 16.71. RESULTS: Two hundred eight questionnaires were completed. 22.11% (n = 46) of the sample population had received no prior teaching on the topic of ionising radiation. Over half of the respondents (51.92%, n = 108) rated the importance of radiation risks as either important or extremely important, with 69.71% (n = 145) of participants rating their perceived knowledge as limited or average. Most correctly identified that a CT scan (n = 203), PET-CT scan (n = 199) and a chest x-ray (n = 196) exposed patients to ionising radiation. A small proportion of the participants incorrectly thought that an MRI scan (n = 21) and an ultrasound scan (n = 2) involved ionising radiation. The results obtained failed to meet the RCR audit target, which states that 90% of doctors should be aware of common radiological doses. It was observed that only 17.79% (n = 37) of survey respondents scored over 50% in the knowledge assessment, with the median knowledge score of the whole cohort being 2.5 out of 9 (27.78%). Respondents who had prior teaching on the topic performed better those who had no prior teaching, with average scores of 3.19 (35.44%) and 2.04 (22.67%) respectively. Senior clinicians performed better when compared to junior clinicians and medical students. CONCLUSION & FUTURE RECOMMENDATIONS: This audit found that the knowledge of radiation risks within the North of Scotland in the selected sample population was insufficient across all levels of the clinical team. Further, continuous education around the topic and future audit opportunities may help to optimise knowledge and training.

Se estudia el desarrollo de habilidades motrices básicas en niños con trastorno por déficit de atención e hiperactividad y se planteó como objetivo diseñar y validar una estrategia didáctica inclusiva en una unidad educativa del Ecuador, con el empleo de una metodología mixta y pre experimental. Se utilizó un muestreo no probabilístico, intencional y estratificado, con criterio de inclusión, la muestra la conformaron cinco niños con trastorno por déficit de atención e hiperactividad, en su grupo, clase, y su docente de Educación Física. La medición de las variables inclusión-atención del trastorno con enfoque educativo y el desarrollo de habilidades motrices básicas, se realizó mediante ocho indicadores, con el empleo de una guía de observación, el análisis documental, y apoyada en la técnica de tarjado simple para agrupar los datos observados. Como resultado se expone una estrategia didáctica inclusiva para el desarrollo de las habilidades motrices básicas, en niños con trastorno por déficit de atención e hiperactividad, durante las clases de Educación Física, diseñada a través del enfoque sistémico estructural y funcional que mostró su efectividad en la práctica educativa, al comparar los resultados del pre- y postest, por medio de la prueba no paramétrica de los signos.


Estuda-se o desenvolvimento de habilidades motoras básicas em crianças com transtorno de déficit de atenção e hiperatividade e o objetivo foi desenhar e validar uma estratégia de ensino inclusiva em uma unidade educacional no Equador, utilizando uma metodologia mista e pré-experimental. Foi utilizada uma amostragem não probabilística, intencional e estratificada, com critérios de inclusão, a amostra foi composta por cinco crianças com transtorno de déficit de atenção e hiperatividade, em seu grupo, turma, e seu professor de Educação Física. A mensuração das variáveis ​​inclusão-atenção do transtorno com abordagem educativa e desenvolvimento de habilidades motoras básicas foi realizada por meio de oito indicadores, com uso de guia de observação, análise documental e apoiado na técnica de pontuação simples para agrupar os dados observados. Como resultado, apresenta-se uma estratégia didática inclusiva para o desenvolvimento de habilidades motoras básicas, em crianças com transtorno de déficit de atenção e hiperatividade, durante as aulas de Educação Física, desenhada através da abordagem sistêmica estrutural e funcional que mostrou sua eficácia na prática educativa, ao comparar os resultados do pré e pós-teste, por meio do teste não paramétrico de sinais.


The development of basic motor skills in children with attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder is studied and the objective was to design and validate an inclusive teaching strategy in an educational unit in Ecuador, using a mixed and pre-experimental methodology. An intentional and stratified non-probabilistic sampling was used, with inclusion criteria, the sample was made up of five children with attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder, in their class group, and their Physical Education teacher. The measurement of the inclusion-attention variables of the disorder with an educational approach and the development of basic motor skills was carried out using eight indicators, with the use of an observation guide, documentary analysis, and supported by the simple scoring technique to group the observed data. As a result, an inclusive didactic strategy is presented for the development of basic motor skills in children with attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder during Physical Education classes, designed through the structural and functional systemic approach that showed its effectiveness in the educational practice, when comparing the results of the pre- and post-test, through the non-parametric test of signs.
