Background: The increasing incidence and prevalence of breast malignancies have led to increasing numbers of surgical interventions performed on the axilla and breast, including axillary lymph node dissection (ALND), sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB), and mastectomy. The risk of postoperative complications, like breast cancer-related lymphoedema (BCRL), can have significant deleterious cosmetic and quality of life effects. National guidelines and cancer councils publish recommendations to avoid skin puncturing procedures, such as venepuncture and intravenous (IV) cannulation, on arms ipsilateral to the surgical site to prevent BCRL occurrence. The initial trials that established a link between BCRL and skin puncture were conducted in the 1950s and 1960s; the evolution of surgical management of breast cancer has likely led to large decreases in complication rates. Methods: Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, four databases were systematically searched for relevant articles. Eleven relevant articles were identified for inclusion in the final analysis. Updated Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists & Faculty of Pain Medicine (ANZCA) guidelines were included in the analysis following their publication after the initial search had been completed. Results: The overall quality and quantity of evidence in this field is sufficient to conclude that skin puncturing procedures on ipsilateral arms should not be avoided in patients with previous breast or axillary surgery. The highest-quality and most recent available evidence does not support an association between BCRL and skin puncturing procedures. Policies and practices that advocate avoiding skin puncture procedures to prevent BCRL may lead to delays in clinical care. The 2023 ANZCA guidelines recommend against avoiding affected arms for peripheral access and suggest the removal of institutional policies preventing this practice. Conclusions: In patients that have undergone breast surgery or axillary procedures, venous access procedures can be safely performed on the ipsilateral arm. The evidence does not support overarching restrictions on using the ipsilateral arm without pre-existing lymphoedema.

An increasing number of patients have required cardiac reoperations in recent decades, and this trend is expected to continue. Hence, re-sternotomy is and will be a common practice in high-volume centres. Re-sternotomy in complex aortic reinterventions carries a high risk of injuring major vascular and heart structures. To avoid catastrophic injuries, preoperative planning and case individualization are essential to minimize complications. Designing a safe and tailored strategy for each patient is believed to have an impact on postoperative outcomes. The arterial cannulation site, the need for hypothermia, left ventricle decompression and the use of an aortic occlusion balloon catheter are some of the preoperative decisions that must be made on a case-by-case basis to ensure adequate brain and visceral perfusion and to minimize major bleeding and circulatory interruption in case of re-entry injury.

Aim: To evaluate the effects of double (axillary and femoral) vs. single (axillary) cannulation on early outcomes of acute type A aortic dissection (ATAAD). Materials & methods: Meta-analysis using PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, and Cochrane databases through August 23, 2023. Focused on operative mortality, postoperative stroke, re-exploration for bleeding, spinal cord injury, and renal replacement therapy. Results: Among 5 propensity score-matched studies with 2127 patients, double cannulation showed comparable mortality and higher rates of postoperative stroke (pooled odds ratio: 1.69, 95% confidence interval: 1.19-2.39) and need for renal replacement therapy (pooled odds ratio: 1.35, 95% confidence interval: 1.13-1.60) compared with single cannulation. Conclusion: Double arterial cannulation in ATAAD surgery is associated with increased postoperative stroke and renal replacement therapy than single cannulation.


What is this summary about? We studied the optimal way to maintain blood flow during surgery for acute aortic dissection. We focused on comparing the use of one tube placement site in the axillary artery with two sites, both in the axillary and femoral arteries, in five previous studies.What were the results? Using two sites was associated with a higher risk of stroke and need for dialysis after surgery than using only one site.What do the results mean? Adding a tube in the femoral artery for blood flow may increase the risk of complications. It appears that placing the tube only in the axillary artery may be a safer choice for appropriately selected patients having this surgery.

Background: There has been an increased interest in using antegrade cannulation techniques during surgery for type A aortic dissection. While the utilization of central artery cannulation has been on the rise in recent times, its effectiveness and safety still require thorough examination. This study aimed to explore both the efficiency and safety of central arterial cannulation. Methods: A meta-analysis was conducted on studies that evaluated surgical outcomes when using central artery cannulation (CAC) in comparison to axillary artery cannulation (AXC) or femoral artery cannulation (FAC). Results: 10 retrospective observational studies were included, enrolling 3022 patients (CAC = 1208 vs. FAC = 606; CAC = 1051 vs. AXC = 1119). Among these, 4 articles involved axillary artery cannulation, femoral artery cannulation, and central artery cannulation. Central cannulation was linked to decreased short-term mortality [odds ratio, 0.66, 95% confidence interval (CI) (0.48, 0.89), χ 2 = 3.27, p = 0.007; I 2 = 0; p = 0.86] compared to femoral cannulation. Additionally, central cannulation was associated with a lower occurrence of temporary neurological dysfunction (TND) [odds ratio, 0.57, 95% CI (0.38, 0.85), χ 2 = 0.88, p = 0.006; I 2 = 0%, p = 0.83] when compared with femoral cannulation. However, there was no statistical significance in mortality and TND between the central cannulation and axillary cannulation groups. Conclusions: This meta-analysis reveals that central cannulation surpasses femoral cannulation in lowering short-term mortality and the occurrence of TND among patients undergoing surgery for type A acute aortic dissection. However, central cannulation does not exhibit a higher mortality and TND compared to axillary cannulation.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the blood flow velocity and wall shear stress in total arch replacement with a "shaggy" aorta, using computational fluid dynamics, and determine the optimal cannulation method. METHODS: A patient-specific aortic arch aneurysm model was constructed by using computed tomography scans. Three cannulas were assessed, as follows: dispersive with a steep angle, dispersive with a gentle angle, and the endo-hole type. The cannula tips were oriented toward the aortic arch (standard direction) and aortic root (reversed direction), with an ideal angle (base orientation: 0°), tip orientations rotated 20° clockwise and counterclockwise from the base orientation. The variables of interest included the blood flow velocity, streamlines, wall shear stress, and flow distribution. RESULTS: The standard direction resulted in variable accelerated flow and wall shear stress locations based on cannula tip orientation, leading to unstable cerebral branch flow. Minor deviation in the cannula tip angle and cannula type led to significant alterations in flow distribution. Conversely, in the reverse direction for all cannulas, no accelerated blood flow was observed in the proximal aortic arch or cerebral vessel ostia even with angular adjustments, helping maintain a stable cerebral branch flow. Minimal variation in blood flow distribution was observed across all cannula types and angles. CONCLUSION: Our simulations indicate that, irrespective of the cannula type or orientation, directing the cannula tip toward the aortic root (reversed direction) prevents accelerated blood flow in critical areas, suggesting its potential as an optimal approach for aortic arch surgery in "shaggy" aorta cases.

Introduction Internal jugular vein (IJV) cannulation is a routine procedure in operating rooms, critical care units, and perioperative settings. Ultrasound guidance has notably increased the success rates of IJV cannulation. A modified ultrasound technique known as the short-axis out-of-plane method with dynamic needle tip positioning (DNTP) allows for continuous visualization of the needle tip throughout the procedure. This study aims to compare the first-pass success rate of IJV cannulation using the DNTP and long-axis in-plane (LAIP) approaches. Methods One hundred patients between 18 and 70 years undergoing elective surgery requiring IJV cannulation were recruited. Patients were assigned randomly to the DNTP group (n = 50) or the LAIP group (n = 50). We recorded the first-pass success rate, time to achieve successful cannulation, number of skin punctures, overall success rate within five minutes, and potential complications such as pneumothorax and hematoma. Results The first pass success rate was higher in the DNTP group (48/50, 96%) as compared to the LAIP group (38/50, 76%, relative risk, 1.67; 95% confidence interval, 0.039-0.707; p = 0.008). The cannulation time was shorter in DNTP (116.98 ± 22.90 seconds) versus the LAIP group (213.04 ± 52.08 seconds; p < 0.001). No complications like pneumothorax or hematoma were noted in both groups. Conclusion We conclude that the ultrasound-guided DNTP technique for IJV cannulation, as compared with the LAIP technique, may significantly improve the first attempt cannulation, number of attempts, and cannulation time.

RESUMO

A 74-year-old male entered the hospital with a medical history of an aortic arch and a descending thoracic aneurysm. To prevent arm ischaemia after the frozen elephant trunk procedure, a left subclavian artery to left common carotid artery anastomosis was performed. The postoperative period was complicated by sepsissternal infection and mediastinitis. We decided to perform a combined total aortic root and aortic arch replacement with 3 cryopreserved homografts. In addition, the "reverse arch technique" was applied to adapt the distal anastomosis. The operation is associated with a high risk of mortality in the postoperative period.

OBJECTIVE: The optimal cannulation strategy for patients with acute type A aortic dissections (ATAAD) is unclear. METHODS: A systematic search was performed to identify all studies comparing aortic and non-aortic cannulation in patients undergoing ATAAD repair. The primary endpoint was overall survival. The secondary endpoints were operative mortality, postoperative stroke, renal failure, renal replacement therapy, paraplegia, and mesenteric ischemia. Pooled meta-analyses with aggregated and reconstructed time-to-event data were performed. RESULTS: Twenty-three studies were included (aortic: 3904; non-aortic: 10,719). Ten-year overall survival was 61.1 â€‹% and 58.4 â€‹% for aortic and non-aortic cannulation, respectively (HR 1.07; 95 â€‹% CI 0.92-1.25; p â€‹= â€‹0.38). No statistically significant difference was observed for operative mortality (p â€‹= â€‹0.10), stroke (p â€‹= â€‹0.89), renal failure (p â€‹= â€‹0.83), or renal replacement therapy (p â€‹= â€‹0.77). CONCLUSION: Patients undergoing surgery for ATAAD can undergo aortic cannulation with similar outcomes to those who undergo non-aortic cannulation.

Few studies have reported the application of vacuum-sealing drainage of infected dialysis vascular access wounds. Herein, we present a case of buttonhole-related arteriovenous fistula infection treated with vacuum-sealing drainage. A 53-year-old female hemodialysis patient was hospitalized with an inflamed arteriovenous fistula. The patient underwent non-tunneled catheterization for dialysis and was treated with moxifloxacin and vancomycin for staphylococcal infection. On Day 3, the skin overlying the inflamed fistula was ulcerated, resulting in severe hemorrhage. Emergency surgery was performed along with vacuum-sealing drainage for fistula reconstruction. Vacuum-sealing drainage accelerated the recovery of the wound without complications. No further access complications occurred during over a 3-year follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Despite advancements in surgical and anesthesia techniques, acute and persistent postoperative pain are still a common challenge. Postoperative pain has direct effects on individual patient care and outcome, as well as putting strain on limited health care resources. Several prediction methods for postoperative pain have been described. One such method is the assessment of pain during peripheral venous cannulation (VCP). It is not known if different approaches to anesthesia and analgesia, depending on the evaluation of risk for postoperative pain, can improve outcome. The aim of this study is to evaluate if individualized anesthesia and analgesia can affect postoperative pain and recovery after surgery, in patients stratified by VCP. METHODS: Adult patients scheduled for laparoscopic surgery undergo pain-sensitivity stratification using VCP on the day of surgery. Patients scoring VCP ≥2.0 on the visual analogue scale (pain-sensitive) are randomized to multimodal anaesthesia and analgesia with opioids or standard of care. Patients scoring VCP ≤1.9 (pain-tolerant) are randomized to opioid-free anaesthesia or standard of care. The primary outcome is acute postoperative pain measured with numeric rating scale in the postoperative care unit. Secondary outcomes include analysis of pain after 24 h, persistent postoperative pain and quality of recovery. DISCUSSION: Individualized perioperative pain management has the potential to improve patient care. This study will examine the impact of different anesthesia and analgesia regimes, in patients with differing pain sensitivity, on postoperative pain. OBJECTIVE: To test the effectiveness of a novel wire-guided scalpel (Guideblade) to create a precise dermatotomy incision for central venous catheter (CVC) insertion. DESIGN: Prospective, nonrandomized interventional study. SETTING: Stanford University, single-center teaching hospital. PARTICIPANTS: Cardiac and vascular surgical patients (n = 100) with planned CVC insertion for operation. INTERVENTIONS: A wire-guided scalpel was used during CVC insertion. RESULTS: A total of 188 CVCs were performed successfully with a wire-guided scalpel without the need for additional equipment in 100 patients, and 94% of CVCs were accomplished with only a single dermatotomy attempt. "No bleeding" or "minimal bleeding" at the insertion site was observed in 90% of patients 30 minutes after insertion and 80.7% at the conclusion of surgery. CONCLUSION: The wire-guided scalpel was effective in performing dermatotomy for CVC with a 100% success rate and a very high first-attempt rate. The wire-guided scalpel may decrease bleeding at the CVC insertion site.

BACKGROUND: The SpineST-01 system is an image-guided vertebrae cannulation training system. During task execution, the computer calculates performance-based metrics displaying different visual perspectives (lateral view, axial view, anteroposterior view) with the position of the instrument inside the vertebra. Finally, a report with the metrics is generated as performance feedback. METHODS: A training box holds a 3D printed spine section. The computer works with 2 orthogonally disposed cameras, tracking passive markers placed on the instrument. Eight metrics were proposed to evaluate the execution of the surgical task. A preliminary study with 25 participants divided into 3 groups (12 novices, 10 intermediates, and 3 expert) was conducted to determine the feasibility of the system and to evaluate and assess the performance differences of each group using Kruskal-Wallis analysis and Mann-Whitney U analysis. In both analyses, a P value ≤ 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: When comparing experts versus novices and all 3 groups, statistical analysis showed significant differences in 6 of the 8 metrics: axial angle error (°), lateral angle error (°), average speed (mm/second), progress between shots (mm), Time (seconds), and shots. The metrics that did not show any statistically significant difference were time between shots (seconds), and speed between shots (mm/second). Also, the average result comparison placed the experts as the best performance group. CONCLUSIONS: Initial testing of the SpineST-01 demonstrated potential for the system to practice image-guided cannulation tasks on lumbar vertebrae. Results showed objective differences between experts, intermediates, and novices in the proposed metrics, making this system a feasible option for developing basic navigation system skills without the risk of radiation exposure and objectively evaluating task performance.

Background: This study aims to assess the effect of needle distance of arteriovenous fistula (AVF) cannulation on haemodialysis adequacy based on KT/V. Materials and methods: This study was a parallel-group, randomized controlled trial. Patients who met the inclusion criteria were divided into two groups with 3 and 6 cm needle distances using block randomization. Data acquisition transpired through a comprehensive checklist encompassing demographic variables such as age and sex, alongside clinical metrics comprising actual weight, dry weight, average dialysis duration, fistula longevity, and KT/V rate. Results: A total of 42 haemodialysis patients were enroled in this investigation, with 21 allocated to the 3 cm needle distance group and another 21 to the 6 cm needle distance group. The mean post-haemodialysis KT/V values for the 3 cm and 6 cm needle distance groups were 1.25 (SD=0.25) and 1.42 (SD=0.24), respectively, demonstrating a statistically significant difference (P<0.001). While there was no significant difference in the average pre-haemodialysis and post-haemodialysis KT/V values within the 3 cm needle distance group (t=1.93, P=0.068), the corresponding values for the 6 cm needle distance group exhibited a notable discrepancy (t=9.66, P<0.001). Conclusion: In general, a needle distance of 6 cm between arteriovenous points yielded superior enhancements in dialysis adequacy compared to a 3 cm needle distance following haemodialysis. Consequently, health administrators and policymakers may consider instituting efficacious interventions to scrutinize the care and therapeutic protocols for haemodialysis patients, involving the development of policies and applications.

INTRODUCTION: Axillary artery cannulation (AAC) has been widely employed in total arch replacement surgeries using the frozen elephant trunk (FET) technique for acute type A aortic dissection (ATAAD), showing better clinical results than femoral artery cannulation (FAC). Nevertheless, in type II hybrid arch repair (HAR), FAC is crucial for lower body perfusion. Hence, it is unclear whether AAC remains necessary or if AAC represents a more advantageous method for initiating cardiopulmonary bypass. METHODS: We conducted a study involving patients diagnosed with ATAAD who underwent type II HAR from August 2021 to December 2022. Demographic baseline and intraoperative data were collected, and the postoperative outcomes of patients receiving FAC only were compared with those receiving AAC. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in baseline demographics between patients who underwent FAC alone (n = 46) and those who underwent AAC (n = 39). Patients who underwent AAC showed a lower incidence of transient neurological dysfunction (TND) post-surgery compared to those who underwent FAC (12.8% vs 32.6%, p = .032). There were no significant differences between the groups in terms of postoperative mortality within 30 days, permanent neurological dysfunction (PND), length of stay in the intensive care unit (ICU) and postoperative ward, duration of mechanical ventilation, and other complications. CONCLUSIONS: Axillary artery cannulation may decrease the incidence of postoperative transient neurological dysfunction (TND) in type II HAR for ATAAD. Nonetheless, studies with larger sample sizes are necessary.

BACKGROUND: Autogenous arteriovenous fistula (AVF) is the preferred vascular access mode. However, the earliest possible time for AVF puncture and whether premature puncture affects the AVF patency rate remain unclear. METHODS: In this multicenter retrospective cohort study, adult uremic patients who underwent AVF surgery for the first time at Taizhou Hospital or Enze Hospital of Zhejiang Province between September 1, 2018 and August 31, 2021 were enrolled. All patients were followed up for 1 year after puncture, and the status of fistula establishment and puncture, subsequent patency, loss to follow-up, renal transplantation, conversion to peritoneal dialysis, abandonment of the fistula, and death, were recorded. RESULTS: A total of 465 patients with AVFs were included in this study, including 59 (12.7%) patients with fistulas that were cannulated within 30 days. In the early puncture group, the levels of serum creatinine and urea nitrogen were higher, while the levels of hemoglobin and albumin were lower, suggesting that these patients needed urgent dialysis. Furthermore, the rate of non-cuffed catheter use was higher, while the rate of cuffed catheter use was lower, and femoral vein puncture was preferred over internal jugular vein puncture. The mean duration of catheter indwelling was shorter in the early puncture group (19 vs 70 days, p < 0.001). The estimated AVF primary and cumulative functional patency at 12 months was 81.1% versus 82.3% and 98.3% versus 98.7% in the early puncture and control groups, respectively. Kaplan-Meier analysis revealed no significant difference in AVF primary and cumulative functional patency between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: In patients with an established fistula in urgent need of hemodialysis, to avoid new catheterization, a puncture can be performed within 30 days in those with well-developed blood vessels after adequate ultrasound and clinical evaluation without affecting the patency of the fistula.

Background: Type A aortic dissection (AD) and intramural hematoma (IMH) are critical medical conditions. Emergency surgery is typically performed under cardiopulmonary bypass immediately after diagnosis, which involves lowering the body temperature to induce total circulatory arrest. Selection of the arterial cannulation site is a critical consideration in cardiac surgery and becomes more challenging in patients with AD. This study explored the strengths and weaknesses of different cannulation methods by comparing each cannulation strategy and analyzing the reasons for patients' outcomes, especially mortality and cerebrovascular accidents (CVAs). Methods: This retrospective study reviewed the medical records of patients who underwent surgery for type A AD or IMH between 2008 and 2023, using the moderate hypothermic circulatory arrest approach at a single center. Results: Among the 146 patients reviewed, 32 underwent antegrade cannulation via axillary, innominate artery, aortic, or transapical cannulation, while 114 underwent retrograde cannulation via the femoral artery. The analysis of surgical outcomes revealed a significant difference in the total surgical time, with 356 minutes for antegrade and 443 minutes for retrograde cannulation (p<0.001). The mean length of stay in the intensive care unit was significantly longer in the retrograde group (5±16 days) than in the antegrade group (3±5 days, p=0.013). Nevertheless, no significant difference was found between the groups in the 30-day mortality or postoperative CVA rates (p=0.2 and p=0.7, respectively). Conclusion: Surgeons should consider an appropriate cannulation strategy for each patient instead of adhering strictly to a specific approach in AD surgery.

BACKGROUND: The benefits and harms associated with femoral artery cannulation over other sites of arterial cannulation for surgical repair of acute Stanford type A aortic dissection (TAAD) are not conclusively established. METHODS: We evaluated the outcomes after surgery for TAAD using femoral artery cannulation, supra-aortic arterial cannulation (i.e., innominate/subclavian/axillary artery cannulation), and direct aortic cannulation. RESULTS: 3751 (96.1%) patients were eligible for this analysis. In-hospital mortality using supra-aortic arterial cannulation was comparable to femoral artery cannulation (17.8% vs. 18.4%; adjusted OR 0.846, 95% CI 0.799-1.202). This finding was confirmed in 1028 propensity score-matched pairs of patients with supra-aortic arterial cannulation or femoral artery cannulation (17.5% vs. 17.0%, p = 0.770). In-hospital mortality after direct aortic cannulation was lower compared to femoral artery cannulation (14.0% vs. 18.4%, adjusted OR 0.703, 95% CI 0.529-0.934). Among 583 propensity score-matched pairs of patients, direct aortic cannulation was associated with lower rates of in-hospital mortality (13.4% vs. 19.6%, p = 0.004) compared to femoral artery cannulation. Switching of the primary site of arterial cannulation was associated with increased rate of in-hospital mortality (36.5% vs. 17.0%; adjusted OR 2.730, 95% CI 1.564-4.765). Ten-year mortality was similar in the study cohorts. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, the outcomes of surgery for TAAD using femoral arterial cannulation were comparable to those using supra-aortic arterial cannulation. However, femoral arterial cannulation was associated with higher in-hospital mortality than direct aortic cannulation. TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov registration code: NCT04831073.

OBJECTIVE: Minimally invasive cardiac surgery (MICS) is increasing worldwide. In most cases, the surgical technique includes cannulation of the groin for the establishment of cardiopulmonary bypass, requiring a second surgical incision (SC) for exposure and cannulation of the femoral vessels. With the introduction of arterial closure devices, percutaneous cannulation (PC) of the groin has become a possible alternative. We performed a meta-analysis and systematic review to compare clinical endpoints between the patients who underwent PC and SC for MICS. METHODS: Three databases were assessed. The primary outcome was any access site complication. Secondary outcomes were perioperative mortality, any wound complication, any vascular complication, lymphatic complications, femoral/iliac stenosis, stroke, procedural duration, and hospital length of stay (LOS). A random effects model was performed. RESULTS: A total of 5 studies with 2,038 patients were included. When compared with PC, patients who underwent SC showed a higher incidence of any access site complication (odds ratio [OR] = 3.09, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.87 to 5.10, P < 0.01), any wound complication (OR = 10.10, 95% CI: 3.31 to 30.85, P < 0.01), lymphatic complication (OR = 9.37, 95% CI: 2.15 to 40.81, P < 0.01), and longer procedural duration (standardized mean difference = 0.31, 95% CI: 0.12 to 0.51, P < 0.01). There was no significant difference between the 2 groups regarding perioperative mortality, any vascular complication, femoral/iliac stenosis, stroke, or hospital LOS. CONCLUSIONS: The analysis suggests that surgical groin cannulation in MICS is associated with a higher incidence of any access site complication (especially wound complication and lymphatic fistula) and with a longer procedural time compared with PC. There was no difference in perioperative mortality.

Rumen cannulation is a surgical technique used to collect rumen contents from ruminants. However, rumen cannulation surgery may potentially impact the composition of the rumen microbiota. This study aimed to examine the longitudinal alterations in the rumen microbiota composition of Hanwoo steers after cannulation surgery. In this study, eight Hanwoo steers were used; four steers underwent rumen cannulation surgery (cannulation group), while the remaining four were left intact (control group). Rumen samples were collected from all eight steers using the stomach tubing method on the day before surgery (day 0) and on postoperative days 1, 4, 7, 10, 14, 17, 21, 24, and 28, resulting in 80 samples (10 timepoints × 8 animals). The microbiota of all 80 samples were analyzed using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing with Quantitative Insights into Microbial Ecology version 2 (QIIME2). There were no significant differences (p > 0.05) in all major phyla and most major genera representing at least 0.5% of total sequences across all 80 samples between the control and cannulation groups on the preoperative and postoperative days. However, while the alpha diversity indices did not differ (p > 0.05) between the two groups on the preoperative day, they significantly differed (p < 0.05) between the two groups on the postoperative days. Further, the overall microbial distribution based on both unweighted and weighted principal coordinate analysis plots significantly differed (p < 0.05) between the two groups on both the preoperative and postoperative days. Orthogonal polynomial contrasts indicated that major genera and microbial diversity in the cannulation group decreased following surgery but returned to their initial states by postoperative day 28. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that rumen cannulation surgery affects some major taxa and microbial diversity, suggesting that the rumen cannulation method can alter the composition of rumen microbiota in Hanwoo steers.
