Furniture is identified as a vital volatile organic compound (VOC) emission source in the indoor environment. Leather has become the most common raw and auxiliary fabric material for upholstered furniture, particularly with extensive consumption in sofas, due to its abundant resources and efficient functions. Despite being widely traded across the world, little research has been conducted on the VOCs released by leather materials and their health risk assessment in the indoor environment. Accordingly, this study investigated the VOC emissions of leather with different grades and the health risk of the inhalation exposure. Based on the ultra-fast gas phase electronic nose (EN) and GC-FID/Qtof, the substantial emissions of aliphatic aldehyde ketones (Aks), particularly hexanal, appear to be the cause of off-flavor in medium and low grade (MG and LG) sofa leathers. The health risk assessment indicated that leather materials barely pose non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic effects to residents. Given the abundance of VOC sources and the accumulation of health risks in the indoor environment, more stringent specifications concerning qualitative and quantitative content should be extended to provide VOC treatment basic for the manufacturing industry and obtain better indoor air quality.

Approximately 75-90 % of a person's lifetime is spent inside increasingly airtight buildings, where indoor pollutant levels typically exceed those outdoors. Poor indoor air quality can lead to allergies, respiratory diseases, and even cancer, and can also reduce the longevity of buildings. Passive adsorption materials play a crucial role in reducing indoor pollutants. This review highlights the latest advances in using Metal-organic Frameworks (MOFs) as passive adsorption materials for indoor pollutant capture and outlines the principles for developing high-performance adsorbents. It provides a comparative analysis of the development and performance of MOFs and composite adsorbent materials, highlighting their respective advantages and limitations in indoor pollutant adsorption technology. The article proposes strategies to address these challenges and offers a comprehensive review of current practical adsorption devices. Finally, aiming to advance commercialization of MOFs, the anticipated development of indoor pollutant adsorption technology is discussed in this paper.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the black carbon (BC) pollution in the indoor air of typical residential houses in urban areas of Beijing, and to explore the relationship between indoor and outdoor BC concentrations as well as the main influencing factors. METHODS: The indoor and outdoor PM_(2.5) samples were collected simultaneously from 33 apartments in the urban areas of Beijing during both the heating season (January to March) and the non-heating season (June to August) in 2016. Subsequently, optical method were employed to analyze BC concentrations in PM_(2.5)samples. The Spearman correlation coefficient (r_s) and the indoor/outdoor (I/O) ratio of BC concentrations were both calculated to characterize the relationship between indoor and outdoor BC concentrations. The factors may influence indoor BC pollution was collected through a questionnaire, including the basic characteristics of the residential buildings and households, smoking, cooking, window opening behavior, the use of air conditioner or air purifier and so on. Additionally, a linear mixed-effects model or multiple linear regression model was applied to identify the main factors influencing the I/O ratio. RESULTS: The(M(P25, P75)) concentrations of indoor and outdoor BC for season-pooled analysis were2.84 (2.59, 3.26)µg/m~3 and 3.08 (2.90, 3.63)µg/m~3, respectively. There were significant seasonal differences in both indoor and outdoor concentrations (P<0.05), with higher levels observed during the heating season compared to the non-heating season. There was a strong correlation between indoor and outdoor BC (r_s=0.74). The correlation during the heating season (r_s=0.78) was stronger than that during the non-heating season (r_s=0.44). The ■ of I/O ratio was 0.90±0.11, with 93.5%(29/31)and 86.7%(26/30) of I/O ratios being less than 1 during the heating season and non-heating season, respectively. Statistical analysis also showed that outdoor BCconcentrations were significantly higher than indoors (P<0.05). In season-pooled analysis, the result of the linear mixed-effects model showed that window opening duration was the most important factor affecting the I/O ratio, explaining 21.3%of the total variation. The I/O ratio increased with longer window opening duration. In season-specific analysis, the characteristics of residential buildings (including building age and floor level) and window opening duration were the main factors affecting the I/O ratio during the heating season and non-heating season, respectively in 2016. CONCLUSION: Residents in the urban areas of Beijing experienced relatively high indoor levels of BCpollution, but lower than the outdoor concentration during the same period in 2016. The window opening and the characteristics of residential buildings were the most important factors affecting the I/O ratio of BC.

We estimate the effect of county-level e-cigarette indoor vaping restrictions (IVRs) on infant mortality using United States birth certificates from 2010 to 2015. We estimate difference-in-differences models and find that e-cigarette indoor vaping restrictions increased infant mortality by 0.39 infants per 1,000 live births (12.9%). These effects were disproportionately higher for infants born to younger mothers and in locations with higher baseline levels of prenatal smoking. Infant mortality increased by 34.1% between 100 days to 1 year after IVRs. Infant mortality due to infections and neoplasms were particularly elevated.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate factors associated with indoor formaldehyde levels in office settings within an academic medical institute. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted in 25 offices (261 workers) at a medical university in Thailand. Questionnaires gathered data on demographics, work patterns, and office equipment usage (printers, photocopiers, air fresheners, liquid paper, glue, cleaning agents and marker pens). The building environment was assessed by a multidisciplinary team. Formaldehyde levels and relevant parameters (temperature and relative humidity) were measured in each room both indoors and outdoors. A multiple linear regression model investigated the relationship between formaldehyde and office factors, controlling for room conditions. RESULTS: Median office formaldehyde levels were 442.1 µg/m3 (IQR: 343.8-908.7 µg/m3), exceeding World Health Organization and Thai guidelines. Photocopier use was significantly associated with higher levels of indoor formaldehyde (ß = 0.20, 95%CI: 0.30-0.37, p = 0.02). Air freshener use also showed a significant association (ß = 0.56, 95%CI: 0.30-0.81, p < 0.001). No correlation was found between the use of liquid paper, glue, printers, cleaning agents, or marker pens and indoor formaldehyde levels. CONCLUSIONS: Indoor formaldehyde levels in these offices exceeded the established guidelines. Use of photocopiers and air fresheners were associated with increased formaldehyde levels. Implementing interventions such as improved ventilation and regular screening is essential for creating healthier office environments.

This study aimed to determine the effects of indoor environment (IE) and outdoor air pollutants (OAPs) in residential areas on acute exacerbation (AE) in patients with severe asthma. A total of 115 participants were recruited. To characterize IE, we used structured questionnaires and estimated OAP concentrations using a land-use regression model. Participants who were exposed to passive smoking and lived in houses where the kitchen and living room were not separated showed a significantly higher rate of AE (p = 0.014 and 0.0016, respectively). The mean concentration of PM2.5 in residential areas during the last 3 years was significantly higher in participants with AE than that in those without AE (19.8 ± 3.1 vs. 21.0 ± 2.5 µg/m3, p = 0.033). Moreover, the serum level of 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine significantly increased in participants with AE compared to those without AE (56.9 ± 30.0 vs. 94.7 ± 44.5 ng/mL, p = 0.0047) suggesting enhanced oxidative stress in those with AE.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are continuously emitted into the atmosphere from natural and anthropogenic sources and rapidly spread from the atmosphere to different environments. A large group of VOCs has been included in the class of air pollutants; therefore, their determination and monitoring using reliable and sensitive analytical methods represents a key aspect of health risk assessment. In this work, an untargeted approach is proposed for the evaluation of the exposure to volatile organic compounds of workers in an engine manufacturing plant by GC-MS measurements, coupled with solid-phase microextraction (SPME). The analytical procedure was optimized in terms of SPME fiber, adsorption time, desorption time, and temperature gradient of the chromatographic run. For the microextraction of VOCs, the SPME fibers were exposed to the air in two different zones of the manufacturing factory, i.e., in the mixing painting chamber and the engine painting area. Moreover, the sampling was carried out with the painting system active and running (system on) and with the painting system switched off (system off). Overall, 212 compounds were identified, but only 17 were always present in both zones (mixing painting chamber and engine painting area), regardless of system conditions (on or off). Finally, a semi-quantitative evaluation was performed considering the peak area value of the potentially most toxic compounds by multivariate data analyses.

Human exposure to indoor radon has been a subject of continuous concern due to its health implications, especially as it relates to lung cancer. Radon contaminates indoor air quality and poses a significant health threat if not abated/controlled. A seasonal indoor radon assessment of residential buildings of Obafemi Awolowo University was carried out to determine radon seasonal variability and to evaluate the cancer risk to the residents. AT-100 diffusion-based track detectors were deployed within living rooms and bedrooms for the radon measurement. During the rainy season, the average indoor radon concentration was 18.4 ± 10.1 Bq/m3, with higher concentrations observed in bedrooms compared to living rooms, whereas the average radon concentration was 19.0 ± 4.4 Bq/m3 in the dry season, with similar radon levels in living rooms and bedrooms. The potential alpha energy concentration values ranged from 1.62 to 7.57 mWL. The annual effective dose equivalent values were below the world average and recommended limits for public exposure. Of the three geological units underlying the residences, the buildings overlying the granite gneiss lithology have the highest radon concentrations with average value of 21.4 Bq/m3. The soil gas radon concentration to indoor radon concentration ratio over the granite gneiss lithology is 0.006. The estimated average lifetime cancer risk due to radon inhalation in the residences indicated a potential risk of cancer development in 178 persons in 100 000 population over a lifetime period. The average indoor radon concentrations were below the recommended limit, requiring no immediate remediation measures. Improved ventilation of residential apartments is recommended to minimize residents' risk to indoor radon.

According to a NIH study, Lung cancer among individuals who have never smoked is more prevalent in women and occurs at an earlier age than in smokers. The rise in lung cancer rates among female non-smokers might be linked to radon inhalation and should be further investigated. Our theory is based on the differences in radon exposure between males and females, which can be attributed to the variations in time spent indoors versus outdoors. Over the past few years, the smoking rates have shown a steady decline in the United States and other developed countries. This decrease in smoking prevalence has led to a new shift in the primary risk factors associated with lung cancer. Although tobacco smoke historically served as the primary cause of lung cancer, the reduction in smoking rates has allowed other risk factors, such as radon exposure, to come to the forefront. Given that women in certain countries, on average, might spend more time indoors compared to men, they are potentially exposed to higher levels of radon. This increased exposure could explain the rising rates of lung cancer among female non-smokers. The theory is still in its nascent stages and requires further research and validation. However, if proven correct, it could significantly alter our understanding of lung cancer risk factors and lead to new prevention. It is therefore crucial to expedite the review and publication of this theory, given its potential implications for public health.

Dialkyl phthalate esters are incorporated to enhance the pliability and prevent brittleness in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) tubing. Exposure to these compounds occurs throughout human lifetimes via ingestion, inhalation, and direct skin contact. A study was conducted to evaluate concentrations of four specific phthalates-dimethyl phthalate (DMP), diethyl phthalate (DEP), di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP), and di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP)-in the indoor air of both industrial and administrative sectors within the PVC manufacturing facilities. Air sampling was conducted in the spring season at two polyethylene factories in Zahedan Industrial Park (Sistan and Baluchestan Province, Iran). The outcomes demonstrated that mean concentrations of these substances in industrial along with administrative departments 485.7 µg/m3 and 49.83 µg/m3for DMP, 807.38 µg/m3 and 30.17 µg/m3 for DEP, 849.62 µg/m3 and 37.50 µg/m3 for DBP along with 1268.08 µg/m3 and 45.50 µg/m3 for DEHP respectively. The probabilistic lifetime cancer risk (LTCR) of DEHP in the indoor air of Zahedan PVC factories for men and women was determined using the Monte Carlo simulation technique. The computed mean LTCRs of DEHP for men and women in the indoor air of industrial and administrative departments in Zahedan PVC were 1.3 × 10-3, 1.2 × 10-3and 4.7 × 10-5,4.2 × 10-5respectively. Data showed that DEHP was a potential risk to human health.

Ambient air pollution's health impacts are well documented, yet the domestic environment remains underexplored. We aimed to compare indoor versus outdoor (I/O) air quality and estimate the association between indoor/ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) exposure and lung function in asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients. The study involved 24 h monitoring of PM2.5 levels indoors and outdoors, daily peak expiratory flow (PEF), and biweekly symptoms collection from five patients with asthma and COPD (average age of 50 years, 40% male) over a whole year. Data analysis was performed with linear mixed effect models for PEF and generalized estimating equations (GEE) for exacerbations. More than 5 million PM2.5 exposure and meteorological data were collected, demonstrating significant I/O PM2.5 ratio variability with an average ratio of 2.20 (±2.10). Identified indoor PM2.5 sources included tobacco use, open fireplaces, and cooking, resulting in average indoor PM2.5 concentrations of 63.89 µg/m3 (±68.41), significantly exceeding revised World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines. Analysis indicated a correlation between ambient PM2.5 levels and decreased PEF over 0-to-3-day lag, with autumn indoor exposure significantly impacting PEF and wheezing. The study underscores the need to incorporate domestic air quality into public health research and policy-making. A personalized approach is required depending on the living conditions, taking into account the exposure to particulate pollution.

Indoor environments serve as reservoirs for a variety of emerging pollutants (EPs), such as phthalates (PAE), with intricate interactions occurring between these compounds and indoor oxidants alongside dust particles. However, the precise mechanisms governing these interactions and their resulting environmental implications remain unclear. By theoretical simulations, this work uncovers multi-functional compounds and high oxygen molecules as important products arising from the interaction between DEP/DEHP and O3, which are closely linked to SOA formation. Further analysis reveals a strong affinity of DEP/DEHP for mineral dust surfaces, with an adsorption energy of 22.11/30.91 kcal mol-1, consistent with a higher concentration of DEHP on the dust surface. Importantly, mineral particles are found to inhibit every step of the reaction process, albeit resulting in lower product toxicity compared to the parent compounds. Thus, timely removal of dust in an indoor environment may reduce the accumulation and residue of PAEs indoors, and further reduce the combined exposure risk produced by PAEs-dust. This study aims to enhance our understanding of the interaction between PAEs and SOA formation, and to develop a fundamental reaction model at the air-solid surface, thereby shedding light on the microscopic behaviors and pollution mechanisms of phthalates on indoor dust surfaces.

BACKGROUND: Indoor environmental factors, such as pet ownership, presence of cockroaches, mattress quality, fuel usage (gas or electricity), use of biomass for cooking and heating, exposure to tobacco smoke or household molds can significantly affect the sleep quality of children with chronic cough. However, data regarding the effects of indoor environmental conditions on sleep in this population are limited. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of abnormal sleep behaviors and to establish associations between indoor environmental factors and sleep behaviors among children with chronic cough in Wuxi, China. METHODS: A cross-sectional design was employed in this study, involving children aged 3-18 years. Data on sociodemographic factors, allergies, home environmental exposures, and sleep characteristics of the participants were collected using paper-based questionnaires. The association between indoor environmental factors and sleep behaviors in children with chronic cough was analyzed using logistic regression models. RESULTS: The findings demonstrated that the prevalence of chronic cough among children in Wuxi was 15.50%. The chronic cough group exhibited a significantly higher incidence of eczema, wheezing, rhinitis, food allergy, and nasosinusitis than the non-chronic cough group. In addition, children with chronic cough also tended to have a family history of sleep disorders and adenoid hypertrophy (P < 0.01). After adjusting for confounding factors, a significant association was observed between bruxism (teeth grinding) and chronic cough (sometimes: odds ratio [OR] = 1.04; confidence interval [CI] = 1.01-1.08; always: OR = 1.11; CI = 1.04-1.19; P < 0.01). Among children with chronic cough, recent home decoration was associated with sleepwalking (OR = 1.04; CI = 1.00-1.07; P < 0.05), mold exposure was associated with bruxism (OR = 1.15; CI = 1.0-1.31; P < 0.05), and carpet use at home was associated with apnea (OR = 1.09; CI = 1.02-1.17; P < 0.05), twitching during sleep (OR = 1.13; CI = 1.00-1.27; P < 0.01) and morning headache (OR = 1.14; CI = 1.05-1.23; P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: Children with chronic cough are more prone to some abnormal sleep behaviors than children without chronic cough. Household decoration within a year, household mold exposure, and carpet use were all significantly positively associated with abnormal sleep behaviors in children with chronic cough. Our study provides novel insights into the impact of the indoor environment on children's sleep and the occurrence of chronic cough, offering guidance for tailored health promotion programs for families.

Phthalate acid esters (PAEs), as a common group of plasticizers, are widely present in indoor environments and pose a risk to human health. Indoor dust samples collected from dormitory, classroom, laboratory, and office in several universities in China, were analyzed for seven types of PAEs. The total concentrations of seven PAEs (Σ7PAEs) ranged from 4.87 to 360 µg/g, with a median concentration of 51 µg/g, which is lower than that reported by other studies. Using the median concentration of Σ7PAEs as a metric, we assessed the levels of contamination in different microenvironments, resulting in the following ranking: dormitory > classroom > laboratory > office. There are significant differences in the levels of individual PAEs in different microenvironments. Radiation from sunlight, ventilation rates, cleaning frequency, and sprays were influential factors for the concentrations of individual PAEs in indoor dust. The indoor environmental conditions and consumption patterns profoundly affect PAEs levels. The sources of PAEs in classroom and office were more complex than in dormitory and laboratory. Daily intakes of PAEs were used to calculate carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic human risk for males and females, indicating a low health risk to humans. This is the first study to assess the risk of PAEs in university microenvironments and provides a valuable reference for further research.

Due to the disproportionate amount of time people spend indoors, and the complexities of air pollutant exposures found there, indoor air pollution is a growing concern for airway health. Both infiltration of outdoor air pollution into the indoor space, and indoor sources (such as smoke from tobacco products, cooking or heating practices and combustion of associated fuels, household materials) contribute to unique exposure mixtures. While there is substantial literature on the chemistry of indoor air pollution, research focused on health effects is only beginning to emerge and remains an important area of need to protect public health. We provide a review spanning the last three years of emerging literature relating indoor air exposures to airway health, with a specific focus on the impact of either individual pollutant exposures or common combustion sources on the lower airways. Factors defining susceptibility and/or vulnerability are reviewed in consideration of priority populations and modifiable risk factors that may be targeted to advance health equity.

All humans are exposed to radon, the primary source of natural radiation, which can harm people due to natural processes rather than human activity. Thus, it is of significant importance to determine the levels of radon in indoor, soil gas, water, and outdoors. Radon concentration (CRn) was measured in Kiraz district, Izmir, and the correlation between the indoor and soil gas CRn values was investigated. The indoor CRn values measured in 40 randomly selected dwellings in Kiraz exhibited a wide range from 19.50 ± 2.50 to 204.70 ± 8.00 Bq m-3 with an average value of 61.11 ± 4.23 Bq m-3. The measured indoor CRn values were compared to the reference levels in the world to help control radon in the dwellings. Indoor CRn values were lower than the ICRP reference level of 300 Bq m-3 in all of the dwellings studied. Furthermore, in 34 dwellings (representing 85% of the total number of dwellings studied), indoor CRn values were lower than the WHO reference level of 100 Bq m-3. Health hazard indices, namely annual effective dose (AED) and excess lifetime cancer risk (ELCR), were also calculated for each dwelling and compared with internationally acceptable levels to estimate the risk to human health. The AED values varied from 0.49 ± 0.06 to 5.16 ± 0.20 mSv y-1 with an average value of 1.54 ± 0.11 mSv y-1, which exceeds the world average of 1.15 mSv y-1 as reported by UNSCEAR. The ELCR values ranged from 2.05 ± 0.26 × 10-3 to 21.55 ± 0.84 × 10-3 with an average value of 6.43 ± 0.44 × 10-3, exceeding the world average of 0.29 × 10-3 as reported by UNSCEAR. The soil gas CRn values measured exhibited a wide variation ranging from 129.25 ± 6.38 Bq m-3 to 6172.64 ± 44.06 Bq m-3 with an average value of 1291.79 ± 18.70 Bq m-3. The soil gas CRn values were less than 10,000 Bq m-3; hence, the research area is categorized as "low radon risk areas" according to Sweden Criteria, and so no special constructions are required in the studied area. When soil gas CRn values were compared to indoor CRn values, no linear relationship was found between the CRn values. However, a strong positive linear correlation was found between indoor and soil gas CRn values less than 200 Bq m-3 and 2500 Bq m-3, respectively.

Background: Interest in adaptive sports for children with cerebral palsy (CP) is growing, but current evidence on the benefits and indications for one sport, adaptive climbing, is limited. Purpose: We sought to describe perceived changes observed by parents of children with CP who participated in adaptive climbing. Methods: Parents whose children with CP participated in 5 or more adaptive climbing sessions were eligible to participate and were emailed a recruitment letter and flyer. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, using a moderator guide. Interviews were transcribed and content analyzed, with data grouped into concepts, categories, and themes until data saturation. Results: Ten parents (9 mothers, 1 father) of 10 children with CP (5 girls, 5 boys; ages 7 to 19 years) were interviewed for 15 to 45 minutes each, yielding 4 themes. First, parents perceived that adaptive climbing challenged the children physically (in reach, balance, strength, and head/neck and lower limb motion); second, that it sharpened children's cognitive skills (in focus, problem-solving, and strategic thinking); third, that it raised children's confidence (socially, physically, and emotionally); and fourth, that it expanded children's sense of what they could do (in mastering a challenge, claiming an athletic identity, and participating in a sport like their peers). Conclusions: In this qualitative study, parents described physical, cognitive, and psychosocial benefits of adaptive climbing for their children with CP. These descriptions can be used to inform future studies of children with CP who participate in adaptive climbing.

BACKGROUND: Indoor residual spraying (IRS) is a cornerstone malaria control intervention in Burkina Faso. From 2018 to 2021, non-pyrethroid IRS was implemented annually in two regions of Burkina Faso with distinct malaria transmission patterns, concurrently with annual seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC), and a mass insecticide-treated net (ITN) distribution in 2019. METHODS: A retrospective quasi-experimental approach was used to evaluate the impact of the 2018, 2020, and 2021 IRS campaigns on routinely reported confirmed malaria case incidence at health facilities. The 2019 campaign was excluded due to lack of data reporting during a health sector strike. Controlled interrupted time series models were fit to detect changes in level and trend in malaria case incidence rates following each IRS campaign when compared to the baseline period 24-months before IRS. IRS districts Solenzo (Sudano-Sahelien climate), and Kampti (tropical climate) were compared with neighbouring control districts and the analyses were stratified by region. Modelled health facility catchment population estimates based on travel time to health facilities and weighted by non-malaria outpatient visits were used as an offset. The study period encompassed July 2016 through June 2022, excluding July 2018 to June 2019. RESULTS: District-level population and structure coverage achieved by IRS campaigns was greater than 85% in 2018, 2020, and 2021 in Solenzo and Kampti. In Solenzo a significant difference in malaria case incidence rates was detected after the 2018 campaign (IRR = 0.683; 95% CI 0.564-0.827) when compared to the control district. The effect was not detected following the 2020 or 2021 IRS campaigns. In Kampti, estimated malaria incidence rates were between 36 and 38% lower than in the control district following all three IRS campaigns compared to the baseline period. CONCLUSIONS: Implementation of IRS in Kampti, a tropical region of Burkina Faso, appeared to have a consistent significant beneficial impact on malaria case rates. An initial positive impact in Solenzo after the first IRS campaign was not sustained in the successive evaluated IRS campaigns. This study points to a differential effect of IRS in different malaria transmission settings and in combination with ITN and SMC implementation.

Despite the global transition towards cleaner energy sources observed over the last decade, disparities in access persist worldwide. The dependence on biomass for household heating exacerbates fuel poverty, as economically vulnerable households face challenges in obtaining certified firewood and often resort to using contaminated biomass as a substitute, either partially or completely. We examined black carbon (BC) particle concentrations -a marker for combustion- during wood stove operation through a five-day case study in a typical Chilean household. BC increased rapidly following the ignition of the stove, with the combustion of dry Eucalyptus globulus logs yielding a substantially lower peak (5.29 µg/m3) than when using unclean biomass: 35.75 µg/m3 with demolition wood and painted furniture, and 87.11 µg/m3 with the addition of a blend of particleboard with polystyrene foam. During the latter two events, BC particles remained indoors for about 20 h before the concentrations reverted to pre-spike levels. The slow decay in BC concentrations was further influenced by the infiltration of outdoor air. The mean indoor BC concentrations were comparable to or even exceeded those observed on busy roads in major cities worldwide. These results highlight the risks associated with limited access to clean fuels for indoor heating, alongside inadequate insulation. This study sheds light on the problem of fuel poverty and its adverse effects on health and well-being.

In order to understand the organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) pollution and evaluate the inhalation exposure risk in formal e-waste recycling facilities, the air concentrations, particle size distribution and gas-particle partitioning of OPFRs in four typical workshops were investigated. The total Σ15OPFR concentrations inside workshops were in the range of 64.7-682 ng/m3, with 5.80-23.4 ng/m3 in gas phase and 58.8-658 ng/m3 in particle phase. Triphenyl phosphate (TPHP) and tris(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCIPP) were main analogs, both of which contributed to 49.0-85.7% of total OPFRs. In the waste printed circuit boards thermal treatment workshop, the OPFRs concentration was the highest, and particle-bound OPFRs mainly distributed in 0.7-1.1 µm particles. The proportions of TPHP in different size particles increased as the decrease of particle size, while TCIPP presented an opposite trend. The gas-particle partitioning of OPFR analogs was dominated by absorption process, and did not reach equilibrium state due to continuous emission of OPFRs from the recycling activities. The deposition fluxes of OPFRs in respiratory tract were 65.7-639 ng/h, and the estimated daily intake doses of OPFRs were 8.52-76.9 ng/(kg·day) in four workshops. Inhalation exposure was an important exposure pathway for e-waste recycling workers, and deposition fluxes of size-segregated OPFRs were mainly in head airways region.
