RESUMO

Laryngeal cancer remains a significant global health concern, with poor prognosis for advanced-stage disease highlighting the need for novel diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic approaches. Circular RNAs (circRNAs), a class of covalently closed non-coding RNAs, have emerged as important regulators of gene expression and cellular processes in various cancers, including laryngeal cancer. This review summarizes the current understanding of circRNAs in laryngeal cancer, covering their biogenesis, regulatory mechanisms, and potential clinical applications. We explore the diverse functions of circRNAs, including their roles as miRNA sponges, protein interactors, and direct mRNA regulators, and their influence on key cellular processes such as proliferation, invasion, and metastasis. The review highlights promising circRNAs as diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers, as well as potential therapeutic targets. We also outline current strategies for circRNA modulation, including suppression techniques like RNA interference and CRISPR/Cas systems, and overexpression methods using vectors and synthetic circRNAs.

BACKGROUND: This study evaluates functional larynx preservation in patients with hypopharyngeal cancer (HPC) and laryngeal cancer (LC) who achieved complete remission following radiotherapy (RT) or concurrent chemoradiation (CCRT). METHODS: HPC and LC patients treated with RT/CCRT from 1999 to 2017 were retrospectively analyzed. Severe late dysphagia and tracheostomy cases were assessed to determine laryngeal function. Long-term preservation rate of functional larynx and associated factors were evaluated. RESULTS: Of 152 patients (55 HPC, 97 LC), nine developed severe dysphagia, occurring on average 58.2 months post-treatment. HPC and cervical node metastasis significantly increased the risk of laryngeal function impairment (p < 0.001 and p = 0.014, respectively), presenting a continued decline in functional larynx preservation rate beyond 10 years. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with HPC and cervical node metastasis demonstrate an increased risk for long-term laryngeal function impairment despite successful oncologic outcomes. This risk extends beyond 10 years, underscoring the need for prolonged monitoring and comprehensive support.

This article, accompanied by technical notes and video, presents a case of an 85-year-old patient with a cT2N0 laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma treated using CO2 transoral laser exoscopic surgery (TOLES). The procedure achieved en bloc tumor removal with negative margins, preserving laryngeal and swallowing functions, demonstrating TOLES as a viable alternative to traditional microsurgery with enhanced visualization and ergonomics. Objective: In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effects of demographic data and comorbid diseases on the prognosis and treatment diagnosed with laryngeal squamous cell cancer (LSCC). Methods: Medical records of LSCC patients treated and followed up in a single referral center between 2008 and 2019 were retrospectively reviewed. In addition to the demographic data, the results of overall survival (OS), disease-specific survival (DSS), disease-free survival (DFS), locoregional-free survival (LRFS), and factors affecting recurrence were analyzed. Results: We included 573 patients with a mean age of 60.1±9.8 years. Of the 573 patients, 94.2% (540) were men, 93.7% (537) were smokers, 40.1% had at least one comorbid disease, and 69.8% (400) presented with glottic LSCC. The five-year OS, DSS, DFS, and LRFS rates for all cases were 65.7%, 79.9%, 67%, and 74.7%, respectively. In early-stage LSCC treatment, the rates of OS (p=0.008), DFS (p=0.024) and LRFS (p=0.01) were statistically significantly higher in the endolaryngeal laser surgery (ELS) group compared with the radiotherapy (RT) group. In advanced-stage LSCC treatment, total laryngectomy had statistically significantly higher five-year DFS (p=0.003) and LRFS (p=0.002) rates compared to chemoradiotherapy. Conclusion: Our study showed that ELS provided higher rates of OS, DFS, and LRFS compared to RT in the treatment of early-stage LSCC. Recurrence was significantly higher in supraglottic tumors, advanced-stage tumors, and in patients with clinical N positivity.

Laryngeal cancer is the second most common cancer in the upper aerodigestive tract, with its incidence increasing across all ages. The conventional treatments for laryngeal cancer include surgical procedure, radiation, and chemotherapy; however, these treatments can lead to various complications. Photothermal therapy (PTT) using laser light has been employed form cancer effective treatment because of its minimal invasion and short operation time. The current study aims to investigate the feasibility of 532 nm PTT on laryngeal cancer in an invivo tumor model. Ex vivo dosimetry evaluation was conducted to determine the laser irradiation conditions, and HEP-2 tumor bearing mice were used to demonstrate in vivo photothermal effects. In addition, histology and western blot analysis were conducted to verify tumor necrosis and any changes in cancer-associated factors in the tumor tissues. The current in vivo results showed that PTT at 5 W for 40 s and 20 W for 10 s had comparable effects in terms of temperature increase and tumor removal. The 532 nm PTT significantly decreased the remaining tumor and downregulated the expression levels of MMP- 9 and ERK. The current study demonstrated that the 532 nm PTT could be a feasible option for treatment of laryngeal tumor with high power delivery for a short exposure time. Further investigations will confirm the endoscopic application of the 532 nm PTT for the treatment of intralaryngeal tissue prior to clinical translation.

RESUMO

Thyroid gland metastases from nonthyroidal malignancies are extremely rare. The most common primary malignancies associated with metastasis to thyroid gland include renal cell carcinoma, colorectal carcinoma, lung cancer, and breast cancer. Metastasis to thyroid rarely arises from primary laryngeal cancer. The presence of metastasis to thyroid gland is invariable and associated with poor prognosis and thus, should be differentiated from primary thyroid malignancy. Hereby, we have one such case of metastasis to thyroid gland from laryngeal cancer diagnosed on 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography scan.

BACKGROUND: Laryngeal cancer is a malignant tumor that originates from the mucous membrane of the larynx. Currently, the specific involvement mechanism of copper death in laryngeal cancer patients has not been deeply studied. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore the molecular characteristics and clinical survival significance of copper death-related genes in laryngeal cancer. METHODS: Relevant transcriptomes and clinical data were retrieved and downloaded from the GEO database. Differential expression genes related to laryngeal cancer and copper death were selected, and the immune function, clinical risk correlation, and survival prognosis were analyzed. RESULTS: The differential analysis results showed that the differential expression genes related to laryngeal cancer and Cu-proptosis included SLC31A1 and ATP7B, and there was interaction between the immune cell groups in the differential genes of copper death in laryngeal cancer. Decreasing the expression of the gene ANXA5 or increasing the expression of the gene SERPINH1 can increase the susceptibility to laryngeal cancer. CONCLUSION: Copper death-related genes can affect the survival prognosis of laryngeal cancer patients. Detection of changes in their expression can provide new diagnostic and treatment directions for the progression of early-stage laryngeal cancer.

Over the last 2 decades, the paradigm of laryngeal cancer management has pivoted toward preserving laryngeal function without sacrificing oncologic outcomes. Transoral laser microsurgery has diminished the role of open laryngeal surgery. For early-stage laryngeal cancer, the common primary modalities are endoscopic laryngeal surgery and narrow field radiation. Total laryngectomy followed by either radiation or chemoradiation is option for advanced laryngeal cancer. In experienced hands and following meticulous patient selection, supracricoid laryngectomy may serve as a viable alternative to total laryngectomy to preserve laryngeal function. Total laryngectomy is still the recommended treatment in those with airway compromise and/or laryngeal dysfunction.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the influence of mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) training on the negative emotions and social functioning of patients with laryngeal cancer post-operation. METHODS: Sixty-five patients with laryngeal cancer admitted to our hospital from January 2017 to December 2019 were selected and divided into an observation group of 33 cases and a control group of 32 cases according to the patient's wishes. The control group received routine intervention, while the observation group received mindfulness decompression training in addition to the control group. Both groups were evaluated after 8 weeks of intervention. The research tools included the self-rating anxiety scale (SAS), self-rating depression scale (SDS), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Social Disability Screening Schedule (SDSS), Social Support Rating Scale (SSRS), and European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire (QLQ-C30), all of the scores of them were used to verify the foregoing scale. The effects of MBSR were evaluated by the differences between the post- and pre-intervention scores in each scale. T-test was used for mean comparison and Pearson test was used for rate comparison χ2 inspection. LITERATURE REVIEW: Patients will have negative emotions during the surgical treatment of laryngeal malignancies (Literature 1), which will affect their mental health (literature 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7). Mindfulness decompression training (literature 10, 11) can reduce the depression and anxiety of patients with malignant tumors (literature 14, 15). According to the inclusion criteria and exclusion criteria (literature 16 and 17), two groups of patients were selected in this study, and the scores were obtained using research tools including SAS (literature 19), SDS (literature 20), PSQI (literature 21), SDSS (literature 22) and QLQ-C30 (literature 24 and 25). The effect of MBSR was evaluated by the difference before and after the intervention scores in each scale. RESULTS: After the intervention, the scores of the SAS and SDS in the two groups were lower than before (P < 0.05), the PSQI score of the two groups was lower than before (P < 0.05), the SDSS score of the two groups was lower than before (P < 0.05), and the scores of the QLQ-C30 in the two groups were higher than before intervention (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Mindfulness-based stress reduction training can reduce the negative emotions of patients with laryngeal cancer and improve their quality of sleep, social functioning, and quality of life. It is worthy of clinical application.

Background: Narrow-band imaging is an advanced endoscopic technology used to detect changes on the laryngeal tissue surface, employing a comparative approach alongside white-light endoscopy to facilitate histopathological examination. Objective: This study aimed to assess the utility and advantages of NBI (narrow-band imaging) in identifying malignant laryngeal lesions through a comparative analysis with histopathological examination. Methods: We conducted a systematic literature review, utilizing databases such as PubMed, the CNKI database, and Embase for our research. Results: We analyzed the articles by reviewing their titles and abstracts, selecting those we considered relevant based on determined criteria; in the final phase, we examined the relevant studies according to the specific eligibility criteria. Conclusions: Narrow-band imaging is an advanced endoscopic technology that demonstrates its efficacy as a tool for diagnosing malignant laryngeal lesions and comparing them to premalignant lesions. The European Society of Laryngology has implemented a standardized classification system for laryngeal lesions to enhance data correlation and organization.

Laryngeal cancer exhibits a notable global health burden, with later-stage detection contributing to a low mortality rate. Laryngeal cancer diagnosis on throat region images is a pivotal application of computer vision (CV) and medical image diagnoses in the medical sector. It includes detecting and analysing abnormal or cancerous tissue from the larynx, an integral part of the vocal and respiratory systems. The computer-aided system makes use of artificial intelligence (AI) through deep learning (DL) and machine learning (ML) models, including convolution neural networks (CNN), for automated disease diagnoses and detection. Various DL and ML approaches are executed to categorize the extraction feature as healthy and cancerous tissues. This article introduces an automated Laryngeal Cancer Diagnosis using the Dandelion Optimizer Algorithm with Ensemble Learning (LCD-DOAEL) method on Biomedical Throat Region Image. The LCD-DOAEL method aims to investigate the images of the throat region for the presence of laryngeal cancer. In the LCD-DOAEL method, the Gaussian filtering (GF) approach is applied to eliminate the noise in the biomedical images. Besides, the complex and intrinsic feature patterns can be extracted by the MobileNetv2 model. Meanwhile, the DOA model carries out the hyperparameter selection of MobileNetV2 architecture. Finally, the ensemble of three classifiers such as bidirectional long short-term memory (BiLSTM), regularized extreme learning machine (ELM), and backpropagation neural network (BPNN) models, are utilized for the classification process. A comprehensive set of simulations is conducted on the biomedical image dataset to highlight the efficient performance of the LCD-DOAEL technique. The comparison analysis of the LCD-DOAEL method exhibited a superior accuracy outcome of 97.54% over other existing techniques.

Background: Laryngeal cancer (LC), a prevalent malignant tumor of the head and neck, is characterized by a high rate of postoperative recurrence and significant treatment challenges upon recurrence, severely impacting patients' quality of life. There is a pressing need for effective biomarkers in clinical practice to predict the risk of LC recurrence and guide the development of personalized treatment plans. This study uses bioinformatics methods to explore potential biomarkers for LC recurrence, focusing on key genes and exploring their functions and mechanisms of action in LC recurrence. The aim is to provide new perspectives and evidence for clinical diagnosis, prognostic evaluation, and targeted treatment of LC. Methods: Gene expression profiles from the GSE25727 data set in the Gene Expression Omnibus database were analyzed to detect the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between the tumor tissues of postoperative recurrent and non-recurrent early stage LC patients. Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analyses were also conducted. A protein-protein interaction (PPI) network and transcription factor (TF)-DEG-microRNA (miRNA) network were developed using the Search Tool for the Retrieval of Interacting Genes/Proteins (STRING) database, with key genes selected using the Molecular Complex Detection (MCODE) plugin. A Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA) was carried out to investigate the possible mechanisms of the key genes. A retrospective analysis was conducted using the clinical data of 83 LC patients. Immunohistochemical staining was used to examine the transcription level of the key genes in the LC tumor tissues and the factors affecting postoperative recurrence. Results: A total of 248 upregulated and 34 downregulated DEGs were identified in the GSE25727 data set. The PPI network analysis identified a significant module and five candidate genes (i.e., RRAGA, SLC38A9, WDR24, ATP6V1B1, and LAMTOR3). The construction of the TF-DEG-miRNA network indicated that ATP6V1B1 might be regulated by one TF and interact with 17 miRNAs. The KEGG and GSEA analyses suggested that ATP6V1B1 may influence LC recurrence through the involvement of pro-inflammatory and pro-fibrotic mediators, glutathione metabolism, matrix metalloproteinases, immune regulation, and lymphocyte interactions. The recurrence rate of the 83 LC patients included in the study was 19.3% (16/83). The immunohistochemistry results indicated that ATP6V1B1 was highly expressed in patients with recurrent LC. The univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses revealed that tumor stage T3 (P=0.04), tumor stage T4 (P=0.01), and a high expression of ATP6V1B1 (P=0.02) were risk factors for recurrence after surgical treatment in LC patients. Conclusions: The key genes and signaling pathways identified through the bioinformatics screening provide insights into the potential mechanisms of the pathogenesis of LC. ATP6V1B1 may promote the recurrence of LC by weakening the immune phenotype. Our findings provide a theoretical basis for further research into clinical diagnostics and treatment strategies for LC.

Lemierre's syndrome, a rare complication of oropharyngeal infections, is characterized by septic thrombophlebitis primarily affecting the internal jugular vein, which can lead to septicemia, thrombotic obstruction, and potential dissemination to distant sites. We present the case of a 54-year-old male with a history of chronic smoking and newly diagnosed laryngeal carcinoma, complicated by Lemierre's syndrome. Initial symptoms included odynophagia, dyspnea, and cervical swelling, with subsequent diagnosis confirming thrombosis of the internal jugular vein via ultrasound, CT, and MRI. Treatment included broad-spectrum antibiotics and anticoagulation, followed by oncological management for the carcinoma. This case underscores the diagnostic challenge posed by concurrent malignancy and highlights the critical role of early recognition and comprehensive treatment involving antibiotics, anticoagulation, and oncological therapy. Multidisciplinary collaboration is crucial for optimizing outcomes in complex cases like this, emphasizing the need for heightened clinical suspicion and prompt intervention involving proper imaging diagnosis, appropriate antibiotic coverage, and timely microbiological recognition for adjustment of antimicrobial therapy.

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we investigated the effects of cluster nursing care on postoperative infection risk and nutritional indicators in patients with primary laryngeal cancer. METHODS: This study comprised 50 patients with primary laryngeal cancer diagnosed between March 2020 and December 2022. They were randomly divided into the test and control groups, with each group comprising 25 patients. The test group received cluster nursing care, while the control group received standard nursing care. Indicators for quantitative scoring, such as Patient Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA), Zubrod Performance Status (ZPS), Karnofsky score, and Nutrition Risk Screening 2002 (NRS-2002), measurement indicators such as body mass index (BMI), body mass, hip circumference, calf circumference, grip strength, weight loss, and laboratory indicators, such as hemoglobin, albumin, and transaminase levels, were used to analyze change. RESULTS: Improvements were observed in the scores of PG-SGA, ZPS, and NRS-2002 in the test group following the implementation of nursing care for the test and control groups for 1 week, which were statistically significantly different from those at baseline (P < 0.05), and compared to the control group (P < 0.05). No statistically significant differences were observed in other indicators (P > 0.05). There was a statistically significant difference (P < 0.05) between the incidence rate of infections and complications in the test and control groups, which were 20.00% and 48.00%. CONCLUSION: The postoperative nutritional status of patients with primary laryngeal cancer improved in phases through specialized nursing care. It is also a factor closely related to postoperative complications.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to assess the efficacy of the doctor-nurse-patient workshop transitional care model on post-operative care for patients with laryngeal cancer and its influence on quality of life. METHODS: A total of 68 patients with laryngeal cancer who underwent surgical treatment at the hospital between 2021 and 2022 were included in the study. The patients were divided into two groups, a control group and a research group, each consisting of 34 patients, based on the chronological sequence of their surgeries. Patients in the control group received standard nursing care, while those in the research group received the doctor-nurse-patient workshop transitional care model in addition to standard nursing care. After 2 months of care, levels of albumin (ALB), total protein (TP), hemoglobin (Hb), and quality of life scores (measured using the Quality of Life Instrument for Head and Neck Cancer, QLICP-HN) were compared between the two groups. Additionally, the incidence of adverse events during the recovery period was assessed and compared between the two groups. RESULTS: Following 2 months of care, patients in the research group exhibited elevated ALB, TP, and Hb levels compared to those in the control group. Additionally, the average QLICP-HN scores were higher in the research group, while the incidence of adverse events was lower compared to the control group. CONCLUSION: Implementing the doctor-nurse-patient workshop transitional care model in home care for patients with laryngeal cancer can enhance their nutritional status post-surgery and improve their quality of life during home rehabilitation. This, in turn, leads to a reduction in the incidence of adverse events and complications during the recovery period.

OBJECTIVE: Early diagnosis of laryngeal cancer (LC) is crucial, particularly in rural areas. Despite existing studies on deep learning models for LC identification, challenges remain in selecting suitable models for rural areas with shortages of laryngologists and limited computer resources. We present the intelligent laryngeal cancer detection system (ILCDS), a deep learning-based solution tailored for effective LC screening in resource-constrained rural areas. METHODS: We compiled a dataset comprised of 2023 laryngoscopic images and applied data augmentation techniques for dataset expansion. Subsequently, we utilized eight deep learning models-AlexNet, VGG, ResNet, DenseNet, MobileNet, ShuffleNet, Vision Transformer, and Swin Transformer-for LC identification. A comprehensive evaluation of their performances and efficiencies was conducted, and the most suitable model was selected to assemble the ILCDS. RESULTS: Regarding performance, all models attained an average accuracy exceeding 90 % on the test set. Particularly noteworthy are VGG, DenseNet, and MobileNet, which exceeded an accuracy of 95 %, with scores of 95.32 %, 95.75 %, and 95.99 %, respectively. Regarding efficiency, MobileNet excels owing to its compact size and fast inference speed, making it an ideal model for integration into ILCDS. CONCLUSION: The ILCDS demonstrated promising accuracy in LC detection while maintaining modest computational resource requirements, indicating its potential to enhance LC screening accuracy and alleviate the workload on otolaryngologists in rural areas.

BACKGROUND: Preserving laryngeal function after partial laryngectomy for laryngeal cancer is an important consideration. Therefore, we examined the use of thyroid flaps for this purpose. METHODS: We analyzed 21 patients who underwent thyroid flap reconstruction after partial laryngectomy for laryngeal cancer in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, the Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University from January 2010 to January 2020. All patients were male and aged 51-64 years. Seventeen patients underwent modified tracheocricohyoidoepiglottopexy, and the remaining four patients underwent modified cricohyoidopexy. The thyroid flap was pedicled from the superior thyroid blood vessels. In the modified tracheocricohyoidoepiglottopexy, the flap was turned to cover the area between the tracheal ring and epiglottis to reconstruct the anterior wall of the cricoid cartilage, whereas in the modified cricohyoidopexy, it was turned over between the cricoid cartilage and tongue root to reduce anastomotic tension. A total of seven patients underwent radiotherapy and chemotherapy after surgery. RESULTS: Thyroid flap reconstruction was successfully performed in all patients. The postoperative hospitalization time was 9-21 days, the postoperative nasal feeding time was 18-47 days, and the tracheotomy tube was removed 30-160 days after surgery. No laryngeal stenosis, flap necrosis, bleeding complication, or dysfunction of the thyroid and parathyroid glands was observed after surgery. Two patients experienced wound infections about 1 week after discharge and were admitted again for antibiotic treatment. After dressing and compressing the neck wound, the patients were discharged. Three patients experienced local tumor recurrence after surgery, two of whom did not receive radiotherapy and chemotherapy after modified tracheocricohyoidoepiglottopexy. No patients had distant metastasis after surgery. CONCLUSIONS: Thyroid flaps have significant application value in the reconstruction of the laryngeal cavity after partial laryngectomy for laryngeal cancer. It has high safety and feasibility, convenient surgical procedure, and satisfactory postoperative outcomes.

The absence of improvement in survival rates across various cancers, including laryngeal cancer, has led to an increasing interest in understanding the immune response to cancer. In head and neck cancers, immune modulatory mechanisms such as immune microenvironment and immune infiltration are important in cancer pathogenesis. This study aims to explore the distribution of tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) subgroups in the immune microenvironment and evaluate their impact on tumor histopathological characteristics and prognosis. The study included 50 patients who underwent laryngectomy for laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma, in Istanbul University - Cerrahpasa, Faculty of Medicine Department of Otorhinolaryngology, between January 2016 and January 2018. Pathology specimens were evaluated using immunohistochemistry to assess the expressions of the CD3, CD20, CD8, CD4, CD25, and FoxP3 markers, identifying subgroups of TILs. The investigation aimed to uncover how these subgroups influence tumor histopathological features and survival outcomes. The high infiltration of CD3, CD20, and CD4 had a positive impact on disease-specific survival, disease-free survival, and recurrence-free survival. In addition, overall survival was positively affected by high CD3 and CD4 infiltrations. However, no significant relationship was observed between the expressions of CD8, FoxP3, and CD25 and any of the survival parameters. The infiltration of CD3, CD20, and CD4 positive cells indicative of a robust antitumoral immune response-emerged as favorable prognostic factors in laryngeal cancer. These findings suggest that enhancing the infiltration of CD3, CD20, and CD4 lymphocytes could be a therapeutic strategy worth exploring in clinical trials.

RESUMO

Giant cell tumour is a growth predominantly found in long bones of the body. Giant cell tumour has a rare occurrence in the head and neck. A case of a 31 year old male with no known comorbidities at the ENT Department, Shifa International Hospital, Islamabad presented with anterior neck swelling and hoarseness of voice. Patient was diagnosed as having Giant Cell Tumour of Larynx (GTCL) proven on FNA cytology and post-operative biopsy. GCTL is an uncommon entity with only 45 reported cases in the world.

OBJECTIVES: Vocal cord fixation is one of the main upstaging features of laryngeal cancer. In our previously conducted retrospective study, vocal cord (VC) mobility restoration after chemoradiotherapy was a favorable prognostic variable. In this prospective study, we examined the significance of VC mobility restoration after definitive treatment as a prognostic variable. METHODS: In this prospective cohort study, we enrolled 30 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx with VC impairment/fixation (T2/3, T4a) who underwent definitive chemoradiotherapy with complete response. Video laryngoscopy before and at 3 months after treatment was used to evaluate VC mobility. The primary endpoint of the study was the local recurrence-free probability. Secondary endpoints included recurrence-free probability, disease-specific survival (DSS), and overall survival (OS). RESULTS: The median age of patients was 62 years (IQR 54-67). The primary subsites were the glottis (n = 13) and supraglottis (n = 14). After treatment, 18 (60%) patients had a full recovery of VC mobility, and 12 (40%) patients' VCs were fixed or impaired. Five-year local recurrence-free probability was worse in the VC-impaired group compared to a group with restored VC mobility (46% vs. 85%, p = 0.012). Recurrence-free probability, OS, and DSS differences were not statistically significant in both groups. VC mobility restoration predicted local recurrence-free probability on univariable analysis (HR 6.15, 95% CI 1.23-30.6). CONCLUSION: In this prospective study, we show that the absence of VC mobility restoration is associated with worse local recurrence-free probability after definitive laryngeal preservation treatment. Patients with persistent vocal cord immobility warrant closer follow-up to detect recurrence early. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: III Laryngoscope, 2024.
