RESUMO

Rosacea is a chronic cutaneous disease that manifests with facial erythema, telangiectasia, papules and pustules on the central face. Although the pathogenesis is not well established, rosacea appears to have a close relationship with Demodex mites. The aim of the study was to elucidate the factors influencing Demodex mite density by standardized superficial skin biopsy (SSSB) in patients with rosacea. This prospective, cross-sectional study included 200 patients with rosacea. Clinical characteristics of the patients were recorded and SSSB was used to measure Demodex density (Dd). If Dd was < 5 D/cm2 in the first SSSB, SSSB was repeated 4 more times to avoid false negative results. Of 200 patients, 152 (76%) were females and 48 (24%) males with a mean age of 43.47 ± 11.87 years. Ninety-nine patients (49.5%) had erythematotelangiectatic (ETR) and 101 patients (50.5%) had papulopustular (PPR) subtype of rosacea. Among 200 patients, the ratio of cumulative positive results of the consecutive SSSBs were as follows: 1st SSSB = 125 (62.5%), 2nd SSSB = 155 (77.5%), 3rd SSSB = 170 (85%), 4th SSSB = 173 (86.5%) and 5th SSSB = 174 (87%). The ratio of detecting Demodex infestation in the first SSSB was significantly lower in patients with PPR (55/101, 54.5%) than in patients with ETR (70/99, 70.7%). Median total Demodex mite density and D. folliculorum density were significantly higher in the ETR group than in the PPR group. There was a statistically significant relationship between density of Demodex tails in dermoscopy and positive/negative results of Demodex infestation in SSSB. As a conclusion, Demodex mite density by SSSB was influenced by various factors such as subtypes of rosacea, types of Demodex species, and dermoscopic findings.

Due to their relatively high prevalence and commensalism, the pathogenicity of Demodex mites has been debated. Recent data, however, show Demodex to be associated with skin and ocular surface diseases such as rosacea, blepharitis, and keratitis. Here the authors report the first known case, to the best of the their knowledge, of Demodex infestation mimicking preseptal cellulitis in an adult human. A 29-year-old male bilaterally blind from advanced retinopathy of prematurity presented with a 2-month history of right-greater-than-left upper eyelid and periocular/cheek swelling, redness, and ocular discharge that did not resolve with oral antibiotics or oral steroids. Based on MRI findings, biopsies of the right lacrimal gland, right orbital fat, and right upper eyelid preseptal skin were obtained which revealed marked intrafollicular Demodex mite density and budding yeasts in the upper eyelid skin. This case serves to alert clinicians to this entity that may not otherwise be usually considered in ophthalmic clinical practice.

Agricultural practitioners, researchers and policymakers are increasingly advocating for integrated pest management (IPM) to reduce pesticide use while preserving crop productivity and profitability. Using selective pesticides, putatively designed to act on pests while minimising impacts on off-target organisms, is one such option - yet evidence of whether these chemicals control pests without adversely affecting natural enemies and other beneficial species (henceforth beneficials) remains scarce. At present, the selection of pesticides compatible with IPM often considers a single (or a limited number of) widely distributed beneficial species, without considering undesired effects on co-occurring beneficials. In this study, we conducted standardised laboratory bioassays to assess the acute toxicity effects of 20 chemicals on 15 beneficial species at multiple exposure timepoints, with the specific aims to: (1) identify common and diverging patterns in acute toxicity responses of tested beneficials; (2) determine if the effect of pesticides on beetles, wasps and mites is consistent across species within these groups; and (3) assess the impact of mortality assessment timepoints on International Organisation for Biological Control (IOBC) toxicity classifications. Our work demonstrates that in most cases, chemical toxicities cannot be generalised across a range of beneficial insects and mites providing biological control, a finding that was found even when comparing impacts among closely related species of beetles, wasps and mites. Additionally, we show that toxicity impacts increase with exposure length, pointing to limitations of IOBC protocols. This work challenges the notion that chemical toxicities can be adequately tested on a limited number of 'representative' species; instead, it highlights the need for careful consideration and testing on a range of regionally and seasonally relevant beneficial species.

A escabiose é uma dermatose infecto parasitária mais prevalente no mundo, sobretudo nas regiões tropicais e em países de baixa renda. Surtos são comuns em locais de aglomeração como presídios, escolas e campos de refugiados, e tanto o atraso no diagnóstico como o tratamento inadequado são responsáveis pela propagação da doença. Este trabalho tem por objetivos destacar os principais aspectos da escabiose bem como as apresentações dermatológicas, a fim de auxiliar no diagnóstico e tratamentos precoces, tendo como foco o médico generalista. O estudo foi realizado no Departamento de Clínica de Dermatologia do Hospital das Clínicas da Faculdade de Medicina de São Paulo (HCFMUSP), através de uma revisão de literatura com acesso aos bancos de dados eletrônicos PubMed. A escabiose é causada pelo Sarcoptes scabiei, caracterizada pelo prurido intenso e por lesões cutâneas sugestivas e localizações típicas, mas que podem variar de acordo com a faixa etária ou estados de imunossupressão. É considerada pela Organização Mundial da Saúde uma doença tropical negligenciada, podendo causar grande impacto socioeconômico e, ainda que com menor frequência, levar a complicações, muitas vezes decorrentes de infecções bacterianas secundárias, sobretudo nas formas mais graves da doença (vistas principalmente em pacientes imunossuprimidos). Por esses motivos, o reconhecimento das principais formas de apresentação clínica e sintomas associados são importantes para que o diagnóstico seja estabelecido de forma breve, possibilitando a instituição correta do tratamento e, com isso, cessando o ciclo de transmissão do ácaro.

Spider mites Tetranychus urticae, Tetranychus macfarlanei and Oligonychus biharensis are considered to be highly polyphagous in nature and causes severe damage to a wide range of plants around the world. Amblyseius paraaerialis is an efficient phytoseiid predator of spider mites with a potential to survive on both natural and alternative diets. Evaluation of predatory potential and prey stage preference provides valuable information on the efficacy of the predatory species in controlling mite population. Feeding experiments were conducted on mulberry leaf discs under the laboratory conditions of 30 ± 2 °C and 70 ± 5% relative humidity (RH). After 24 h of feeding experiment, the adult female predator exhibited a significant preference in feeding towards the eggs of T. macfarlanei (42.6%) and the larval stages of T. urticae (46%) and O. biharensis (25.3%). The mass rearing possibilities of A. paraaerialis was tested by tracking and comparing the developmental duration of individual life stages on varied food sources like, honey, castor (Ricinus communis) pollen, honey-pollen mixture and mixed life stages of T. urticae. The predator was failed to complete its development on honey and pollen when supplied separately. However it was successfully developed on honey-pollen mixture and mixed life stages of T. urticae. The developmental studies unravelled a shortest developmental duration and an extended adult longevity and lifespan of A. paraaerialis when reared on the alternative diet, thus opened up the mass rearing possibility of the predatory species under laboratory conditions.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to report clinical observations suggesting the efficacy of topical 1% 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) in treating Demodex -associated blepharitis. METHODS: An observational retrospective review of 13 eyes from 13 individuals with conjunctival neoplastic lesions and concomitant Demodex lash infestation that received topical 1% 5-FU eye drops. Patients underwent slit-lamp examination at each follow-up visit. Clinical photographs of the lash line were obtained after treatment initiation. In a subset of patients, lashes were epilated bilaterally and microscopically analyzed for presence of Demodex mites before and after treatment initiation. RESULTS: The mean age of the population was 68 ± 14 years (range: 30-84 years) and 92% were male. In all 13 patients, a marked reduction in cylindrical dandruff was noted in the treated eye by slit-lamp examination after 2 cycles of 5-FU. There was complete resolution of cylindrical dandruff in 10 of 13 treated eyes compared with 0 resolution of cylindrical dandruff in untreated eyes ( P = 0.0001). In the 6 patients who received epilation, the lashes from the treated eye showed no Demodex , whereas lashes from the fellow untreated eye revealed persistent Demodex . CONCLUSIONS: Topical 1% 5-FU shows efficacy in treating Demodex -associated blepharitis. Further studies are indicated to reproduce our findings and evaluate the potential use of 5-FU as a treatment ingredient.

The drug resistance of poultry red mites to chemical acaricides is a global issue in the control of the mites, which presents an ongoing threat to the poultry industry. Though the increased production of detoxification enzymes has been frequently implicated in resistance development, the overexpression mechanism of acaricide-resistant related genes in mites remains unclear. In the present study, it was observed that the transcription factor Cap 'n' Collar isoform-C (CncC) and its partner small muscle aponeurosis fibromatosis (Maf) were highly expressed in resistant strains compared to sensitive strains under the stress of beta-cypermethrin. When the CncC/Maf pathway genes were down-regulated by RNA interference (RNAi), the expression of the ABC transporter genes was down-regulated, leading to a significant increase in the sensitivity of resistant strains to beta-cypermethrin, suggesting that CncC/Maf played a crucial role in mediating the resistance of D.gallinae to beta-cypermethrin by regulating ABC transporters. Furthermore, it was observed that the content of H2O2 and the activities of peroxidase (POD) and catalase (CAT) enzymes were significantly higher in resistant strains after beta-cypermethrin stress, indicating that beta-cypermethrin activates reactive oxygen species (ROS). In ROS scavenger assays, it was found that the expression of CncC/Maf significantly decreased, along with a decrease in the ABC transporter genes. The present study showed that beta-cypermethrin seemed to trigger the outbreak of ROS, subsequently activated the CncC/Maf pathway, as a result induced the ABC transporter-mediated resistance to the drug, shedding more light on the resistance mechanisms of D.gallinae to pyrethroids.

BACKGROUND: Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory dermatological condition in humans, and its pathogenesis remains unclear. However, the development of rosacea is suspected to be related to Demodex, a microscopic commensal organism that resides in or near hair follicles and sebaceous glands. Although Demodex is known to be a host-specific, obligate commensal organism, it is currently difficult to be cultured in vitro to parasitize and infect other animal hosts. Therefore, direct evidence for a pathogenic role of Demodex in rosacea is currently lacking. SUMMARY: As circumstantial evidence, non-invasive skin-detecting techniques have shown abnormally elevated numbers of Demodex in rosacea patients. Increased cytokine levels such as IL-10, IL-8, and IL-12p70 have been observed in human sebocytes following the Demodex challenge, and acaricides have been found to be effective in rosacea therapy, all point to a close relationship between Demodex and rosacea. Based on these findings, we conducted a comprehensive literature review to summarize the current state of knowledge, research insights, and clinical treatment recommendations for Demodex-associated rosacea, with the ultimate goal of improving patient outcomes.

Hibiscus green spot virus 2 (HGSV-2), a member of the genus Higrevirus (family Kitaviridae), is a positive-stranded RNA virus associated with leprosis-like symptoms in citrus and green spots on leaves in hibiscus. HGSV-2 has only been reported in Hawaii, and while it is speculated that mites in the genus Brevipalpus might be responsible for its transmission, proper transmission assays have yet to be conducted. This study characterizes additional citrus and hibiscus isolates of HGSV-2 collected from two Hawaiian Islands. We constructed an infectious cDNA clone from a hibiscus isolate of HGSV-2 collected on Oahu and demonstrated its ability to infect several experimental hosts, including Phaseolus vulgaris, Nicotiana tabacum, and N. benthamiana, as well as natural hosts, Citrus reticulata and Hibiscus arnottianus. Bacilliform virions with varied sizes of 33 to 120 nm (length) and 14 to 70 nm (diameter) were observed in partially purified preparations obtained from agroinoculated leaves. Virus progeny from the infectious cDNA clone was found to be infectious after mechanical transmission to N. benthamiana and to cause local lesions. Finally, an isoline colony of the mite Brevipalpus azores had vector competence to transmit a citrus isolate of HGSV-2 collected from Maui to citrus and hibiscus plants, demonstrating the mite-borne nature of HGSV-2. The infectious cDNA clone developed in this study is the first reverse-genetics system for a kitavirid and will be fundamental to better characterize basic biology of HGSV-2 and its interactions with host plants and mite vectors.

Microbial communities, derived from food, ambient, and inner, can affect host ecological adaption and evolution. Comparing with most phytophagous arthropods, predators may have more opportunities to develop specific microbiota depending on the level of prey specialization. To explore how diet sources affect host microbial communities and vary across predator species, we considered 3 types of predators from Phytoseiidae (Acari: Mesostigmata): polyphagous (Amblyseius orientalis Ehara, Neoseiulus barkeri Hughes, and Amblyseius swirskii Athias-Henrio), oligophagous (Neoseiulus californicus McGregor), and monophagous (Phytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot) predatory mites. The polyphagous species were fed on 2 types of diets, natural prey and alternative prey. By using 16S rRNA sequencing, we found that diet was the main source of microbiota in predatory mites, while there was no clear pattern affected by prey specialization. Among 3 polyphagous predators, host species had a larger impact than prey on microbial composition. Unlike A. orientalis or N. barkeri which showed consistency in their microbiota, prey switching significantly affected ß-diversity of bacterial composition in A. swirskii, with 56% of the microbial alteration. In short, our results confirmed the substantial influence of diet on host microbial construction in predatory species, and highlighted species differences in shaping the microbiota which are not necessarily related to prey specialization.

BACKGROUND: Tetranychus urticae Koch, is a polyphagous and damaging pest, presenting several resistant populations worldwide. Among new and more environmentally friendly control tools, botanical pesticides represent a valuable alternative to synthetic ones within integrated pest management strategies. Accordingly, we investigated the lethal and sublethal effects of carlina oxide isolated from Carlina acaulis (Asteraceae) roots on T. urticae and its natural enemy, the predatory mite, Neoseiulus californicus (McGregor). RESULTS: Carlina oxide (98.7% pure compound) was used for acaricidal tests on eggs, nymphs, and adult females of T. urticae (concentrations of 312.5, 625, 1250, 2500 and 5000 µL L-1 ), and eggs and females of N. californicus (1250 and 5000 µL L-1 on eggs and females, respectively). Behavioral two-choice tests were also conducted on phytoseiid females. Carlina oxide toxicity was higher on T. urticae females than nymphs (median lethal dose 1145 and 1825 µL L-1 , respectively), whereas egg mortality and mean hatching time were significantly affected by all tested concentrations. A decreasing daily oviposition rate for T. urticae was recorded with concentrations ranging from 625 to 5000 µL L-1 , whereas negative effects on the population growth rate were recorded only with the three higher concentrations (1250, 2500 and 5000 µL L-1 ). No toxic effect on N. californicus females was found, but a strong repellent activity lasting for 48 h from application was recorded. CONCLUSION: Carlina oxide reduced longevity and fecundity of T. urticae adults, but not of N. californicus. This selective property allows us to propose it as a novel active ingredient of ecofriendly acaricides for T. urticae management. © 2023 The Authors. OBJECTIVE: To determine the correlation between the infestation by species of Demodex spp. and the occurrence of primary and recurrent chalazia. METHODS: Prospective and observational study. Patients with primary or recurrent chalazia were included. Eyelash samples were taken to determine the microscopic presence of Demodex spp. The correlation between the recurrence of the chalazia and the infestation by Demodex spp. mites was determined using Spearman's rank correlation coefficient test. RESULTS: Sixty-eight adult patients diagnosed with chalazia were included. In 63.2% of the total cases, the presence of one or more parasites of the genus Demodex spp. was documented. In the quantitative parasitological study, it was found that 25% of all cases presented infestation by Demodex spp. defined by an index greater than or equal to 0.5 parasites per eyelash. The most frequently found species was Demodex folliculorum. Of the 14 patients with recurrent chalazia, 50% presented infestation by Demodex spp. and in 91.7% of the cases the infestation was by D. folliculorum. There is a positive, directly proportional correlation between these factors (rθ=+0.665, P<.05). In the group of patients with primary chalazion, only 18.5% presented infestation by Demodex spp., and in 81.6% of these cases it was caused by D. folliculorum. There is a non-statistically significant correlation between these two factors. CONCLUSION: There is a direct, high and statistically significant correlation between the recurrence of the chalazion and the infestation by Demodex spp., there is no statistically significant correlation between the primary chalazia and the presence of Demodex spp.

Multiple arthropod pests can affect the same crop in agricultural systems, requiring the integration of control methods. In the present study, the effects of residual exposure to four broad-spectrum insecticides/acaricides (azadiractin, abamectin, chlorfenapyr, and fenpyroximate) on immature (development and survival time) and adult females (longevity, fecundity, and fertility life table parameters) of the predatory mite Neoseiulus barkeri were evaluated. Additionally, the insecticides/acaricides were categorized according to their selectivity based on the classification proposed by the International Organization for Biological Control (IOBC) for assessing the susceptibility of arthropods in laboratory experiments. Method 004, proposed by the Insecticide Resistance Action Committee (IRAC), was adopted for the bioassays with predators exposed to insecticide-acaricide residues. Among the insecticides/acaricides studied, azadirachtin had minimal effects on immature and adult N. barkeri (all non-significant) and was considered harmless based on the classification of toxicity according to the standards/categories proposed by the IOBC. All other insecticides/acaricides affected immature and adult N. barkeri and were considered slightly harmful in terms of toxicity, according to the IOBC.

Among the parasites, some groups that have a limited capacity for locomotion, such as mites and lice, the transmission is challenging to win. These ectoparasites disperse through direct contact between hosts or, in some cases, through phoresy. However, these processes are not well-documented in detail because they are difficult to observe and quantify. In the present study, the patterns of distribution of skin mites and phoretic lice on hippoboscid louse fly Pseudolynchia canariensis sampled from Columba livia were evaluated. The analyzed pigeons were juveniles and adults, with three distinct plumage colors: blue checker, spread, or wild type, and were caught over 24 months. A total of 1,381 hippoboscid flies were collected on 377 hosts. The plumage color did not influence the infestation patterns of louse flies on juvenile and adult pigeons, nor did it influence the infestation patterns of skin mites and phoretic lice on the hippoboscid flies. However, the environmental temperature was directly related to higher prevalence, mean infestation intensity, and phoretic species richness on P. canariensis during the hottest seasons. Furthermore, a higher abundance of phoretic mite eggs, including embryonated eggs, was observed in females of P. canariensis in all seasons.

Agriculture sector of Saudi Arabia is growing swiftly and tomato is an important crop cultivated mostly under green houses. Unfortunately, it is facing severe infestation due to divers mite species. Present study, relates to evaluation of toxicity of oxamyl against two phytophagous mites; Aculops lycopersici and Tetranychus urticae, isolated from tomato plants suffering from infestation. Simultaneous effect of oxamyl on two predatory mites; Neosiulus cucumeris and Euseius scutalis, was also evaluated. Three concentrations of oxamyl; half of the recommended dose (HRD), recommended dose (RD) and double recommended dose (DRD), were used against each mite specie to observe mortality within seven days as compared to the control. Significant mortality of 97.91% and 93.92% was observed in A. lycopersici and T. urticae, respectively at RD. In case of predatory mites; N. cucumeris and E. scutalis, mortality was 60.61% and 64.48%, respectively, under same conditions. Mortality of mites observed at HRD was insignificant and there was negligible increase in mortality at DRD. Oxamyl being less toxic to predatory mites and significantly mortal to phytophagous mites is recommended as a tool to as a tool to achieve biological control parallel to pesticidal effect.


O setor agrícola da Arábia Saudita está crescendo rapidamente e o tomate é uma cultura importante cultivada principalmente em estufas. Infelizmente, está enfrentando uma infestação severa devido a diversas espécies de ácaros. O presente estudo refere-se à avaliação da toxicidade do oxamil contra dois ácaros fitófagos; Aculops lycopersici e Tetranychus urticae, isolados de tomateiros infestados. Efeito simultâneo de oxamil em dois ácaros predadores; Neosiulus cucumeris e Euseius scutalis, também foi avaliado. Três concentrações de oxamil; metade da dose recomendada (HRD), dose recomendada (RD) e dose dupla recomendada (DRD), foram usados ​​contra cada espécie de ácaro para observar a mortalidade em sete dias em comparação com o controle. Mortalidade significativa de 97,91% e 93,92% foi observada em A. lycopersici e T. urticae, respectivamente no RD. No caso de ácaros predadores; N. cucumeris e E. scutalis, a mortalidade foi de 60,61% e 64,48%, respectivamente, nas mesmas condições. A mortalidade de ácaros observada no HRD foi insignificante e houve um aumento insignificante na mortalidade no DRD. Oxamil sendo menos tóxico para ácaros predadores e significativamente mortal para ácaros fitófagos é recomendado como ferramenta para alcançar o controle biológico paralelo ao efeito pesticida.

Objective: The aim of the study is to determine the prevalence rates of ectoparasites (external parasites) seen in cattle in Mugla, Aydin and Izmir regions. Methods: For ectoparasite screening, a total of 1,353 cattle breeds from Mugla, Aydin and Izmir regions were included in the study. Ectoparasite samples were collected with the help of hand, forceps, comb and scalpel, brought to the laboratory in plastic containers containing 70% alcohol and examined under a microscope. Results: In the study, 191 (14.12%) of 1,353 cattle were infested with external parasites. Of the cattle, 138 (72.25%) ticks, 24 (12.57%) lice, 9 (4.71%) tabanid, 8 (4.19%) hippoboscid, 7 (3.66%) fleas and 5 (2.62%) mites were detected. Accordingly, 4 tick species in cattle Hyalomma marginatum, Hyalomma excavatum, Hyalomma detritum, Rhipicephalus turanicus, 4 lice species (Bovicola bovis, Linognathus vituli, Solenopotes capillatus, Haematopinus quadripertusus ), 1 mite species (Chorioptes bovis), 2 flea species (Ctenocephalides canis, Ctenocephalides felis), 1 hippoboscid fly species (Hippobosca equina) ve 3 tabanid fly species (Tabanus bromius, Tabanus exclusus, Philipomyia aprica) diagnosed. Conclusion: The presence of external parasites varied depending on the frequency of antiparasitic use in cattle.

The broad mite, Polyphagotarsonemus latus (Banks) (Acari: Tarsonemidae), is a cosmopolitan pest that infests many greenhouse crops. Biological control is an important way to control P. latus, with predatory mites being the most widely used natural enemies of this pest. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the capabilities of three native phytoseiids in China (Neoseiulus californicus, Neoseiulus barkeri and Amblyseius orientalis) in controlling P. latus, using Amblyseius swirskii as a control, a commercial biocontrol agent of this pest widely used in Europe. Consumption, development, and reproduction of the four species when fed with P. latus were assessed, and their life table parameters were estimated and compared. Among the three native species, A. orientalis has the highest consumption rate of P. latus (29.0 per day), the shortest developmental duration (5.3 days), and the highest cumulative fecundity (13.5 eggs/female). Overall, its intrinsic rate of increase (rm) is 0.12, comparable to that of A. swirskii. Among the three candidates, A. orientalis is the only one whose population increase might be expected when fed with P. latus. Therefore, we propose A. orientalis to be a potential biocontrol agent for this pest in China.

The goal of this work was to assess the in vitro acaricidal effects of Pistacia lentiscus essential oil and its pure active components against red poultry mites Dermanyssus gallinae as an alternative to chemical acaricide (formamidines). Essential oil was obtained using hydrodistillation and then analyzed using GC-MS. The following major components were identified: α-pinene (20.58 %), D-Limonene (18.16 %), ß-Myrcène (15.06 %), 4-Terpineol (7.68 %), caryophyllene (5.45 %) and γ-terpinene (5.21 %). The toxicity of essential oil and its six monoterpenes were tested at concentrations ranging from 0.43 to 3.50 mg/cm2, using contact and spraying bioassays. Toxicity was expressed as a lethal concentration (LC50 or LC90). The experiment results revealed that activity was method and concentration dependent, and the spraying method was more effective than the contact bioassay for acaricidal activity. In this bioassay, the highest mortality was observed with 4-Terpineol. The LC50 was estimated to be 0.184 mg/cm2 for this substance, followed by α-pinene, the LC50 of which was estimated to be 0.203 mg/cm2. Caryophyllene and γ-terpinene were found less effective in controlling D. gallinae. P. lentiscus oil and its major compounds were also evaluated for anti-acetylcholinesterase (AChE) effects; 4-Terpineol was found to be the most effective AChE inhibitor with IC50 values reaching 18.73 ± 2.83 µg/mL. This framework pointed out the importance of the traditional use of P. lentiscus as an ecofriendly alternative against ectoparasite of veterinary importance; D. gallinae. In vivo trials should also be conducted to assure the safe use of essential oils or individual compounds and to achieve efficient acaricidal property.

The physics of fluid laminar flow through an idealised deutosternum assembly is used for the first time to review predatory feeding designs over 72 different-sized example species from 16 mesostigmatid families in order to inform the finding of new biological control agents. Gnathosomal data are digitised from published sources. Relevant gnathosomal macro- and micro-features are compared and contrasted in detail which may subtly impact the control of channel- or 'pipe'-based transport of prey liquids around various gnathosomal locations. Relative deutosternal groove width on the mesostigmatid subcapitulum is important but appears unrelated to the closing velocity ratio of the moveable digit. Big mites are adapted for handling large and watery prey. The repeated regular distance between deutosternal transverse ridges ('Querleisten') supports the idea of them enabling a regular fluctuating bulging or pulsing droplet-based fluid wave 'sticking' and 'slipping' along the groove. Phytoseiids are an outlier functional group with a low deutosternal pipe flow per body size designed for slot-like microchannel transport in low volume fluid threads arising from daintily nibbling nearby prey klinorhynchidly. Deutosternal groove denticles are orientated topographically in order to synergise flow and possible mixing of coxal gland-derived droplets and circumcapitular reservoir fluids across the venter of the gnathosomal base back via the hypostome to the prey being masticated by the chelicerae. As well as working with the tritosternum to mechanically clean the deutosternum, denticles may suppress fluid drag. Shallow grooves may support edge-crawling viscous flow. Lateral features may facilitate handling unusual amounts of fluid arising from opportunistic feeding on atypical prey. Various conjectures for confirmatory follow-up are highlighted. Suggestions as to how to triage non-uropodoid species as candidate plant pest control agents are included.
