Lynxacarus radovskyi is of uncommon occurrence and there are few reports in the state of Espírito Santo, Southeastern Brazil. The purpose of the present note is to record the occurrence of L. radovskyi in a Persian domestic cat in Vila Velha, Espírito Santo, Brazil. The animal was asymptomatic, without evidence of dermatological signs. The present report can be informative, once the lack of knowledge in relation to the ectoparasite presence and potential of spread in the regional cat population is constant in the veterinary medicine practice,may cause underreporting of infestations.
Lynxacarus radovskyi é de ocorrência incomum e existem poucos relatos no estado do Espírito Santo, Sudeste do Brasil. O objetivo do presente relato foi reportar a ocorrência de L. radovskyi em felino doméstico da raça Persa em Vila Velha, Espírito Santo, Brasil. O animal apresentava-se assintomático à infestação, sem evidências de alterações dermatológicas. Este relato pode ser informativo, uma vez que a falta de conhecimento em relação à presença e potencial disseminativo deste ectoparasito é constante na prática da Medicina Veterinária, podendo causar subnotificações das infestações.

RATIONALE: Lupus miliaris disseminatus faciei (LMDF) is an inflammatory granulomatous skin disease without a clear etiology that frequently involves the middle area of the face and the upper eyelids. Pathological features of the disease include caseation necrosis and epithelioid granuloma. Consensus treatment for LMDF is currently unavailable. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 47-year-old Chinese female patient who presented with facial pruritic, erythematous papules 8 months before this study. She was diagnosed with skin tuberculosis at another hospital and given antituberculosis medication. However, the treatment was not efficacious. DIAGNOSES: In this study, the diagnosis of Demodex-induced LMDF was made by a dermatologist according to physical examination, skin biopsy pathology, and microscopic examination. INTERVENTIONS: The patient was given ornidazole tablets (500âmg twice a day) and recombinant bovine basic fibroblast growth factor gel (0.2âg/cm twice a day) for an 8-week period. OUTCOMES: Eight weeks after the treatment, the facial erythematous papules were improved, and no new skin lesions were observed. The patient showed no signs of recurrence during the 6-month follow-up. LESSONS SUBSECTIONS: This case showed that ornidazole combined with recombinant bovine basic fibroblast growth factor gel might be useful in treatment of Demodex-induced LMDF. In addition, the results suggested that pathological caseation necrosis was caused by a series of inflammatory and immune responses to Demodex infection.

Habitat loss and fragmentation drive the worldwide depletion of biodiversity. Although it is known that anthropogenic disturbances severely affect host and ecosystem integrity, effects on parasites are largely understudied. This study aims to investigate if and how habitat fragmentation affects the composition of ectoparasite communities on small mammalian hosts in two networks of dry deciduous forest fragments in northwestern Madagascar. Forest sites differing in size, proportion of edge habitat and host density were studied in the Ankarafantsika National Park and in the Mariarano region. A total of 924 individuals of two mouse lemur species, Microcebus murinus (n = 200) and Microcebus ravelobensis (n = 426), and two rodent species, endemic Eliurus myoxinus (n = 114) and introduced Rattus rattus (n = 184), were captured to assess ectoparasite infestations. Ectoparasite prevalence and ectoparasite species richness were statistically related to nine ecological variables applying generalized linear mixed models. Hosts harbored ticks (Haemaphysalis microcebi), mites (Schoutedenichia microcebi, Listrophoroides spp., Laelaptidae gen. spp.) and sucking lice (Lemurpediculus spp., Polyplax sp., Hoplopleuridae gen. sp.). Parasite prevalence differed significantly between host species for all detected parasite taxa. Proximity to the forest edge led to a significant reduction in ectoparasites. Parasite-specific edge effects were observed up to a distance of 750 m from the forest edge. The obtained results imply that habitat fragmentation impacts ectoparasite communities, in particular by negatively affecting temporary parasite species. The results are best explained by an interplay of parasite life cycles, responses to changes in abiotic factors induced by edges and host-specific responses to habitat fragmentation. The negative responses of most studied ectoparasite taxa to forest edges and habitat fragmentation demonstrate their ecological vulnerability that may eventually threaten the integrity of ecosystems and potentially impact ectoparasite biodiversity worldwide.

Demodex folliculorum is a mite that commonly inhabits the pilosebaceous units of facial skin, particularly in a perioral and periorbital distribution. While typically an incidental and asymptomatic parasite, Demodex spp. are proposed to contribute to the pathogenesis of facial folliculitis, chronic blepharitis and papulopustular rosacea. Reports of demodicosis in anatomic locations other than the face are exceedingly rare. Here we report a 36-year-old woman with symptomatic Demodex spp. infestation of Fordyce spots of the labia minora. She was referred to dermatology after a 9-month history of tender red bumps on the vulva that would arise and drain over a 24 to 72 hours period, several times per week. Physical examination revealed erythema of the labia minora and introitus with a 4 mm, pink, dome-shaped soft papule on the left labium minus. Wet mount, microbiologic cultures and sexually transmitted infection (STI) screenings were unremarkable. Histopathologic examination revealed a well-circumscribed nodule of suppurative granulomatous inflammation arising in a background of mucosa with Fordyce spots, the majority of which were infiltrated by Demodex spp. Treatment with oral ivermectin and topical metronidazole cream resulted in a symptom-free period of 22 months. This case represents an unusual presentation of symptomatic Demodex infestation.

Abstract The biological control used for the control of Tetranychus urticae (Koch) is the predator mite Phytoseiulus persimilis (Athias-Henriot). It is important to the know the effects of acaricides on the biological behavior the Abamectin on the functional response of P. persimilis. The functional response of the predator was of type II exposed to concentration of Abamectin, the functional response parameters: successful attack rate (a'), handling time (Th), search efficiency and the maximum predation theory (T/Th) were affected by the acaricide. The predator spends more time in persecute, dominate, consume and prepair it self to the next searching comparing with the proof subject an the predation ability was affected.
Resumo O controle biológico utilizado para o controle de Tetranychus urticae (Koch) é o acaro predador Phytoseiulus persimilis (Athias-Henriot). É importante conhecer os efeitos dos acaricidas sobre o comportamento biológico do predador. Foi avaliado o efeito tóxico de a Abamectina na resposta funcional de P. persimilis. A resposta funcional do predador foi tipo II exposta a concentrações subletais de Abacmetina, os parâmetros da resposta funcional: taxa de ataque (a'), tempo de manipulação (Th), a eficiência na procura e predação teórica máxima (T/Th) foram afetados pelo acaricida. O predador passa mais tempo na procura, dominar, consumir e se preparar para a próxima procura em comparação com a testemunha e sua capacidade de predação foi afetada.

Gymnodactylus darwinii is an endemic lizard from Atlantic Rainforest. Ecological aspects of your parasitic fauna are still unknown. Therefore, the goal of the present study was to know the composition of parasitic fauna of G. darwinii in an Atlantic Rainforest fragment, as well to test the influence of the size, sex and seasonality on parasitological indices. The study was carried out in two conservation units: Mata do Camucim and Mata do Tapacurá, both located in the municipality of São Lourenço da Mata, Pernambuco state, northeast region of Brazil. Sixty-five specimens were collected, of which 39 (569%) were parasitized by cystacanths of Acanthocephala (prevalence 43%; mean intensity 4 ± 9.9; mean abundance 3.82 ± 7.87), Geckobia sp. (Acari, Pterygosomatidae) (prevalence 30.7%; mean intensity 4 ± 15.0; mean abundance 3.74 ± 9.54), Physaloptera sp. larvae (Nematoda, Physalopteridae) (prevalence 4.6%; mean intensity 1 ± 0.47; mean abundance 0.06 ± 0.47) and Paradistomum rabusculum (Trematoda, Dicrocoeliidae) (prevalence 1.2%; mean intensity 1; mean abundance 0.02). Acanthocephalans presented a significant relation with the animal length (r² = 0.31, p = 0.006, n = 28). Infestation by Geckobia sp. was more frequent during the dry season (BLM: p = 0.001), while the infection by Acanthocephalans was frequent in dry and rainy seasons, with no significant variation (BLM: p = 0.78). In addition, the most prevalent parasites showed no significant difference in relation to sex: males and females showed similar infestation intensity by Geckobia sp. (BLM: p = 0.31) and infection by Acanthocephala (BLM: p = 0.34). This is the first study about the parasitic ecology of G. darwinii, representing a significant contribution to the conservation of this species and the ecosystem in which they inhabit.

This study investigated associations between Trypanosoma lewisi and Xenopsylla cheopis, a common cyclical vector of T. lewisi; Polyplax spinulosa, a reported mechanical vector; and Laelaps echidnina and Laelaps lamborni, 2 rodent mites of Rattus norvegicus in Durban, South Africa. In total, 379 R. norvegicus individuals were live-trapped at 48 sites in 4 locality types around Durban during a 1-yr period. Rats were euthanized, cardiac blood was taken to check for hemoparasites, and ectoparasites were removed for identification. Parasite species richness was higher in pups (2.11) and juveniles (1.02) than adults (0.87). Most rats in the study harbored 1 or 2 of the 5 parasites surveyed. Rats with trypanosomes and fleas were more prevalent in the city center and harbor, where juveniles were most affected. Rats with lice were more prevalent in informal settlements and urban/peri-urban areas, where pups had the highest infestations. There was a significant positive association between rats with fleas and trypanosomes and a negative association between rats with lice and trypanosomes. Location and rat age were significant predictors of T. lewisi, X. cheopis, and P. spinulosa. Mites showed no strong association with trypanosomes. Ectoparasite associations are possibly habitat and life-cycle related. We conclude that Durban's city center, which offers rats harborage, an unsanitary environment, and availability of food, is a high-transmission area for fleas and trypanosomes, and consequently a potential public health risk.

Effects of cadmium (Cd) on predator-prey relationships and soil ecological function are poorly understood and there are few methods available to measure soil functional change. Thus, we structured a soil-dwelling food chain containing the predatory mite Hypoaspis aculeifer and its collembolan prey Folsomia candida to study the effects of Cd exposure for eight weeks in a spiked soil aged for five years. The 15N labeled litter was added as food to analyze the change in nitrogen (N) transfer content. H. aculeifer reproduction and growth and the survival and reproduction of F. candida were all negatively affected by Cd exposure, and H. aculeifer reproduction was the most sensitive parameter. The sensitivity responses of F. candida and H. aculeifer were different from those using the previous single species test. The results suggest that predator-prey interactions might influence the toxicity of Cd by predation and food restriction. Cadmium lethal body concentrations of adults and juveniles of F. candida and H. aculeifer juveniles were 500-600, 180-270 and 8-10 µg g-1, respectively. The content of N transfer from litter to animals in the food chain decreased significantly with increasing soil Cd concentration between 100 and 400 mg kg-1. The results suggest that the 15N labeled litter addition method is potentially useful for quantitative assessment of soil functional change for further risk assessment purposes.

La demodicosis es una patología cutánea crónica caracterizada por lesiones eritemato-maculares pruriginosas, cuyo agente causal son ácaros foliculares del género Demodex. Presenta un abanico amplio y polimorfo de manifestaciones clínicas, donde la sospecha clínica se presentará frente a una erupción facial crónica persistente o recurrente, resistente a terapia convencional y de distribución asimétrica. El diagnóstico definitivo es difícil, y requiere un cuadro clínico compatible y la presencia de alta densidad de Demodex. El siguiente documento hace una revisión de conceptos con respecto a la patogenia, clínica, diagnóstico y tratamiento de esta entidad.
Demodicosis is a chronic skin condition characterized by itchy erythematous macular lesions whose causal agents are gender follicular Demodex mites. This entity presents a wide and polymorphous range of clinical manifestations, in which clinical suspicion appears in case of persistent or recurrent chronic facial rash, resistant to conventional therapy and with an asymmetric distribution. The definitive diagnosis is hard to reach, and requires a compatible clinical picture and a high density of Demodex. The following document is a review of concepts regarding pathogenesis, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of this disease.

Background: Blepharitis is a very common disease in the ophthalmologic practice generally taking a chronic course with intermittent exacerbations. Several studies have linked the presence of Demodex folliculorum with chronic blepharitis, since the mite has the capacity to perpetuate the follicular inflammatory process. The prevalence of infection by Demodex spp. is variable depending on the population. In Paraguay, information on the frequency of the infestation in patients with chronic blepharitis is not available. Aim : To determine the frequency of Demodex spp, and the ocular microbiota in patients with chronic blepharitis attending the Department of Ophthalmology at the Teaching Hospital of the National University of Asuncion. Patients and Methods: Consecutively, 28 patients with chronic blepharitis, who agreed to participate in the study, were included. Eyes lashes from the upper and lower eyelids were extracted for immediate mite search by direct observation under a light microscope. Samples from eyelids were taken with Kimura spatula and then cultured on blood agar and in enrichment media and incubated in 5% CO2 at 35° C for 72 hours. Results: Among participants, females were more frequent (64%), the age ranged from 17 to 87 years (mean: 38.0; SD: ±13.5 years). The prevalence of Demodex sp was 54%. Bacteria were isolated 92.9% of cases, most frequently coagulase-negative staphylococci (75%). No association was found between socio-demographic or clinical characteristics and the presence of Demodex sp. Conclusion: The observed high prevalence of infestation by Demodex spp in patients with chronic blepharitis is consistent with other studies.
Introducción: La blefaritis es una enfermedad muy común en la práctica oftalmológica, generalmente de curso crónico con exacerbaciones intermitentes. Varios estudios han relacionado la presencia del Demodex folliculorum con la blefaritis crónica, por su capacidad potencial de perpetuar el proceso inflamatorio a nivel folicular. La frecuencia de D. folliculorum varía de acuerdo a la población. Objetivo: Determinar la presencia de Demodex spp y, caracterizar la microbiota ocular en pacientes con blefaritis crónica y dar a conocer estos resultados. Pacientes y Métodos: Las muestras fueron obtenidas de pacientes que consultaron en la Cátedra de Oftalmología del Hospital de Clínicas de la Universidad Nacional de Asunción (UNA). Fueron incluidos en forma consecutiva 28 pacientes con blefaritis crónica que accedieron a participar en forma voluntaria en el estudio. Se extrajeron las pestañas del párpado superior e inferior de los pacientes para la búsqueda inmediata del ácaro por observación directa bajo el microscopio óptico. Para el cultivo de microorganismos se tomaron muestras del párpado con espátula de Kimura, las que fueron cultivadas en agar sangre y en medios de enriquecimiento e incubadas en CO2 al 5% a 35°C durante 72 h. Resultados: El sexo femenino fue más frecuente (64%), el rango de edad estuvo entre 17 y 87 años con una media de 37,9 ± 13,5. Se observó la presencia de Demodex sp en 54% y aislamiento de bacterias en 92,9%; Staphylococcus coagulasa negativa fue el más frecuente (75%). No se encontraron asociaciones entre las características socio-demográficas o clínicas y la presencia de Demodex sp. Conclusión: La alta infestación por Demodex spp observada en los pacientes con blefaritis crónica coincide con otros estudios.

Infection with Moniezia benedeni is sometimes found in confined cattle in Japan. Between October 2011 and January 2013, we monitored the fecal egg prevalence at a confined cattle farm in Miyazaki prefecture where continuous M. benedeni infection has been recognized for years to evaluate the possible infection routes. Fecal egg prevalence changed seasonally with the highest in October 2011 (27.3%: 9/33). This was followed by a gradual decrease until July 2012 (9.4%: 3/32) and then an increase between August to December 2012 when new egg-excreting cases were observed. The pattern of seasonal changes was similar to that reported previously for cattle kept in a barn with an outside playing yard. Although M. benedeni-infected mites were not found, we constantly detected an oribatid mite, Oribatula sakamorii Aoki, 1970, in the litter of cattle bedding from May to October 2012. This species belongs to a genus which has been reported to be a suitable intermediate host for M. benedeni, suggesting that M. benedeni infection may have been autonomously maintained at the farm via oribatid mites living in the cowshed. When infected cattle were treated with praziquantel, it was found that a single oral inoculation with a dose of 5 mg/kg was effective for deworming.

Anoplocephala magna eggs found in the rectal content of a naturally infected zebra from South Africa were fed to Scheloribates pallidulus under laboratory condition. Mites remained in contact with the eggs for one week and were late kept for 30 days in an incubator at 28°C. At the end of the experiment, 19 out of 136 mites contained typical anoplocephalidae cysticercoids in their body cavity in numbers between one and three. The average size of the metacestodes varied depending on intensity of infection. Cysticercoid infected mites were less likely to carry mite eggs.

O ácaro-plano-vermelho-da-seringueira, Tenuipalpus heveae Baker é uma importante praga de Hevea brasiliensis (Willd. ex. Adr. de Juss.) Müell. Arg. Entre os ácaros predadores, Euseius citrifolius Denmark & Muma tem sido frequentemente registrado nessa cultura. Este trabalho teve por objetivo determinar a atividade predatória de E. citrifolius sobre as fases de ovo, larva, ninfa e adulto de T. heveae. Os experimentos foram realizados em placas de Petri de 9 cm de diâmetro, contendo uma camada de algodão umedecido e sobre ela um disco de folha de seringueira de 2,5 cm de diâmetro, obtido de folhas naturalmente infestadas no campo. Em cada disco foram deixados vinte espécimes da fase biológica de T. heveae a ser testada, eliminando-se o restante com um estilete. Cada placa recebeu um exemplar do predador (larva, ninfa ou fêmea), proveniente de uma criação de laboratório. Para cada fase de E. citrifolius testada, foram considerados quatro tratamentos (fases de T. heveae) e vinte repetições em um delineamento inteiramente casualizado. As avaliações foram realizadas após 24 horas para larvas e ninfas do predador e após 24, 48 e 72 horas para as fêmeas. Larvas e ninfas de E. citrifolius tiveram preferência por larvas de T. heveae, seguida por ninfas, ovos e adultos. Em 72 horas, cada fêmea do predador consumiu 15,0 larvas, 14,5 ninfas, 7,4 adultos ou 2,2 ovos de T. heveae. Assim, pode-se concluir que o ácaro-plano-vermelho é uma presa aceita por E. citrifolius, que apresenta preferência pelas fases de larva e ninfa.
The rubber tree red false spider mite, Tenuipalpus heveae Baker, is an important pest of Hevea brasiliensis (Willd. ex. Adr. de Juss.) Müell. Arg. The phytoseiid mite Euseius citrifolius Dennmark & Muma has frequently been recorded on rubber tree crops. The objective of this work was to determine the predatory activity of E. citrifolius on the different life stages (egg, larva, nymph and adult) of T. heveae. The experiments were carried out in Petri dishes (9-cm diameter) containing a layer of wet cotton inside, onto which a disk of rubber tree leaf (2.5-cm diameter) was laid. The disks were taken from naturally infested leaves. Twenty specimens in the life stage that was to be tested were left on the disk and the others were eliminated; a predator life stage (larva, nymph or female) was obtained from a laboratory stock colony and put into each dish. For each tested life stage of E. citrifolius, 4 treatments (T. heveae life stages) and 20 replications were considered in a randomized block design. The observations were made after 24 hours for larvae and nymphs of the predator, and after 24, 48 and 72 hours for the females. E. citrifolius larvae and nymphs had a higher preference for T. heveae larvae followed by nymphs, eggs and adults. Within 72 hours, each predator female consumed 15.0 larvae, 14.5 nymphs, 7.4 adults or 2.2 eggs of T. heveae. It is concluded that E. citrifolius can feed on red false spider mites, the larva and nymph being the preferred stages.

The rate of infestation of Varroa destructor was investigated in 128 swarms of bees, distributed in three distinct apiaries: with (two) and without (one) superposition of the visualized feeding areas, identified by geoprocessing analysis. A higher infestation rate was observed where superposition in the feeding areas was observed (averages 11.0% and 9.3%) in contrast with the swarms in the apiary where there were no common feeding areas (3.3%). This suggests that superposition of visualized feeding areas is associated with the varroatosis occurrence and that it favors the enhancement of the mite infestation rate in the beehives.

Este trabalho teve como objetivo fazer um levantamento das espécies de ácaros pertencentes à ordem Mesostigmata em Coffea spp. em diferentes localidades do estado de São Paulo. Folhas e ramos de cafeeiros (Coffea spp.) foram coletados em 27 municípios do estado de São Paulo e em diferentes épocas do ano. Todos os ácaros encontrados foram montados em lâminas de microscopia, em meio de Hoyer. A identificação dos ácaros foi feita até o nível específico quando possível. Foram identificadas 39 espécies de ácaros pertencentes às famílias Ameroseiidae, Ascidae, Laelapidae, Macrochelidae, Parasitidae, Phytoseiidae e a um grupo que ainda está sem uma família definida, Africoseius sp.
The objective of this study was to carry out a survey of mite species belonging to the order Mesostigmata on Coffea spp. in different localities of the State of São Paulo. Samples of coffee (Coffea spp.) leaves and branches were collected in 27 municipalities of the State of São Paulo, in different periods of the year. All collected mites were mounted in Hoyer's medium on microscope slides. The identification of mites was at species level when possible. Thirty-nine mite species were identified, belonging to the families Ameroseiidae, Ascidae, Laelapidae, Macrochelidae, Parasitidae, Phytoseiidae and to a group for which the family is still not defined, Africoseius sp.

Ácaros do gênero Euseius são geralmente considerados especialistas na alimentação de pólen. Euseius alatus DeLeon é uma das seis espécies de ácaros fitoseídeos mais comumente encontrados em plantas de coqueiro no Nordeste do Brasil, associado com Aceria guerreronis Keifer. Apesar de a morfologia de E. alatus não favorecer a exploração da área meristemática do fruto habitada por A. guerreronis, o predador pode ter algum papel no controle do eriofídeo durante o processo de dispersão. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o desenvolvimento e a reprodução de E. alatus nas seguintes dietas: A. guerreronis, pólen de Ricinus communis (Euphorbiaceae); e Tetranychus urticae Koch (Tetranychidae) + pólen de R. communis + mel a 10 por cento. Euseius alatus desenvolveu-se mais rapidamente e ovipositou mais quando alimentada em dieta composta por T. urticae + pólen + mel. Contudo, os parâmetros da tabela de vida foram muito semelhantes em todas as dietas, sugerindo que E. alatus pode contribuir na redução da população de A. guerreronis no campo.
Mites of the genus Euseius are generally considered specialist as pollen feeders. Euseius alatus DeLeon is one of the six species of phytoseiid mites most commonly found on coconut plants in northeast Brazil associated with Aceria guerreronis Keifer. Although the morphology of E. alatus does not favor the exploitation of the meristematic area of the fruit inhabited by A. guerreronis, the predator may have some role in the control of this eriophyid during the dispersion process. The objective of this work was to evaluate the development and reproduction of E. alatus on the following diets: A. guerreronis, Ricinus communis pollen (Euphorbiaceae), and Tetranychus urticae Koch (Tetranychidae) + R. communis pollen + honey solution 10 percent. Euseius alatus developed slightly faster and had slightly higher oviposition rate when feeding on the diet composed of T. urticae + pollen + honey. However, life table parameters were very similar on all diets, suggesting that E. alatus may contribute in reducing the population of A. guerreronis in the field.

O ataque de ácaros na cultura da erva-mate tem freqüentemente provocado perdas pela queda precoce das folhas. Assim, há necessidade de se monitorar a população desses artrópodes e adotar estratégias de manejo. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a confiabilidade da amostragem presença-ausência para Oligonychus yothersi (McGregor) na erva-mate. O trabalho foi realizado em um erval comercial, em Cascavel, PR, de abril de 1999 a julho de 2000. Coletas quinzenais de 240 folhas foram feitas em diferentes partes de 10 plantas escolhidas ao acaso. A contagem dos ácaros nas folhas foi realizada em laboratório com auxílio de microscópio estereoscópico. Foi determinado o padrão de agregação através dos coeficientes a e b da lei da potência de Taylor; a proporção de folhas infestadas e o número de amostras requeridas foram estimados através de modelo matemático. O. yothersi apresentou distribuição agregada. A proporção de folhas infestadas calculada pelo modelo matemático mostrou ser um parâmetro confiável para estimar a densidade populacional do ácaro. O número de amostras requeridas foi pequeno, viabilizando a aplicação prática do método de amostragem presença-ausência para O. yothersi na cultura da erva-mate.
Mite infestations to the culture of mate-tea frequently causes losses by the premature fall of the leaves. So, it is necessary to monitor the population of these arthropods, and to adopt management strategies for their control. The objective of this research was to evaluate the trustworthiness of presence-absence sampling for Oligonychus yothersi (McGregor) on mate-tea orchard. This study was conducted in Cascavel, Paraná State, from April 2001 to July 2000, in a mate-tea tree commercial plantation. Biweekly sampling of 240 leaves were collected in different parts of 10 plants, and the number of mites was counted. The aggregation pattern was determined through the coefficients a and b of Taylor's power law. The proportion of infested leaves and the number of required samples were estimated through mathematical model. The mite O. yothersi presented aggregate distribution. The proportion of infested leaves calculated by means of mathematical model showed to be a trustworthy parameter to estimate the population density of the mite. The number of required samples was small, making feasible the practical application of the presence-absence sampling method for O. yothersi in the culture of mate-tea.

Brevipalpus mites colonize a great number of fruit and ornamental plants. Mite species belonging to this genus have been associated with many plant viruses. Citrus leprosis (CiLV) is the most economically important virus transmitted by B. phoenicis mites. It has recently been shown that ornamental plant species can be alternative hosts of this virus. The high volume of trade and frequent movement of live ornamental plants make them efficient pest disseminators. Because of this, it is desirable to expand knowledge of potential pests aiming to guide the adoption of quarantine measures. This work reports ornamental plant hosts of Brevipalpus mites in the Distrito Federal (DF), as well the occurrence of symptoms consistent with Brevipalpus-borne plant viruses in these same hosts. Between July and September of 2005, five surveys were carried out in 14 localities within DF. Leaves and branches of fifty-five ornamental plant species were sampled. The species Pithecellobium avaremotemo Mart. is for the first time reported as a host for B. phoenicis (Geijskes), B. californicus Banks and B. obovatus Donnadieu species. Additionally, seven new species are reported as hosts for Brevipalpus within South America. New hosts are also listed for individual mite species. Typical symptoms of Brevipalpus-borne viruses were observed in Ligustrum sinense Lour., Pelargonium hortorum L.H. Bailey, Hibiscus rosa-sinensis L. and orchids (Dendrobium and Oncidium). The results of this work emphasize the potential role of the ornamental plants as vehicles for dissemination of Brevipalpus mites.
Os ácaros do gênero Brevipalpus colonizam um grande número de espécies frutíferas e ornamentais e têm sido associados a viroses de muitas plantas. A leprose dos citros é a virose de maior importância econômica transmitida por esses ácaros. Recentemente foi comprovado que algumas plantas ornamentais podem ser hospedeiras alternativas desse vírus. Os grandes volumes e a alta movimentação das plantas ornamentais fazem com que estas ajam como eficientes disseminadoras de pragas. Por essa razão, é necessário ampliar o conhecimento sobre pragas potenciais, de modo a subsidiar a implementação de medidas quarentenárias. Neste trabalho são relatadas as plantas ornamentais hospedeiras de ácaros Brevipalpus no Distrito Federal, assim como a ocorrência de sintomas típicos de viroses a elas transmitidas por Brevipalpus. Entre julho e setembro de 2005, foram realizadas cinco coletas em 14 localidades do DF. Foram amostradas folhas e ramos de 55 espécies de ornamentais. Pithecellobium avaremotemo Mart. é relatada, pela primeira vez, como hospedeira das espécies B. phoenicis (Geijskes), B. californicus Banks e B. obovatus Donnadieu. Adicionalmente, são relatadas sete novas espécies como hospedeiras de Brevipalpus na América do Sul. Novos hospedeiros são também listados para cada uma das espécies. Sintomas típicos de viroses transmitidas por Brevipalpus foram observados em Ligustrum sinense Lour., Pelargonium hortorum L.H. Bailey, Hibiscus rosa-sinensis L. e orquídeas (Dendrobium e Oncidium). Os resultados deste trabalho enfatizam o papel potencial de plantas ornamentais como veículo para disseminação de ácaros Brevipalpus.

Aceria guerreronis Keifer é considerada uma das principais pragas do coqueiro no mundo. Dentre os Phytoseiidae relatados nessa cultura, Amblyseius largoensis (Muma) tem sido encontrado associado a A. guerreronis. Com o intuito de verificar se A. largoensis se alimenta de A. guerreronis, foi estudada a biologia desse predador com diferentes fontes de alimento, incluindo A. guerreronis. Foram avaliadas três dietas [Tetranychus urticae Koch + pólen de mamona (Ricinus communis L.) + mel a 10 por cento, A. guerreronis + pólen + mel e A. guerreronis isoladamente], avaliando-se o desenvolvimento, sobrevivência, oviposição, razão sexual e longevidade de A. largoensis a 27°C, 60 ± 5 por cento de umidade relativa e fotofase de 12h. Tabelas de vida de fertilidade foram construídas. A duração da fase imatura foi menor na dieta constituída apenas por A. guerreronis, enquanto que a fecundidade foi maior nas dietas à base de presa + pólen + mel. Não houve diferença entre os valores de sobrevivência das formas imaturas submetidas a diferentes dietas alimentares. Os parâmetros da tabela de vida de fertilidade foram superiores quando a alimentação foi constituída por A. guerreronis ou T. urticae + pólen + mel, embora o predador tenha sido capaz de completar seu ciclo biológico e se reproduzir quando alimentado exclusivamente com A. guerreronis. Os resultados sugerem que A. largoensis seja um predador de A. guerreronis em condições naturais e que possa estar desempenhando algum papel no controle dessa praga.
Aceria guerreronis Keifer is considered one of the main pests of coconuts around the world. Amongst the Phytoseiidae recorded on this crop, Amblyseius largoensis (Muma) has been reported in association with A. guerreronis. In order to verify whether A. largoensis feeds on A. guerreronis, the biology of this predator was evaluated on different food sources, including A. guerreronis. Three types of diet were tested [Tetranychus urticae Koch + castor bean (Ricinus communis L.) pollen + honey at 10 percent, A. guerreronis + pollen + honey, and only A. guerreronis], determining its development, survivorship, oviposition, sex ratio and longevity at 27°C, 60 ± 5 percent RH 12 h photophase. Fertility life tables were constructed. The duration of the immature phase was lower when feeding only on A. guerreronis, while fecundity was higher when feeding on a prey + pollen + honey. There was no difference in relation to survivorship of the immature stages between the three diets. Parameters of fertility life tables were higher when the diet included A. guerreronis or T. urticae + pollen + honey, although the predator was able to complete its life cycle and reproduce when feeding exclusively on A. guerreronis. The results suggest that A. largoensis preys upon A. guerreronis under natural condition and that it might play some role in the control of the latter.
