Hoof diseases are a major welfare and economic issue in the global dairy cattle production industry, which can be minimized through improved management and breeding practices. Optimal genetic improvement of hoof health could benefit from a deep understanding of the genetic background and biological underpinning of indicators of hoof health. Therefore, the primary objectives of this study were to perform genome-wide association studies, using imputed high-density genetic markers data from North American Holstein cattle, for 8 hoof-related traits: digital dermatitis, sole ulcer, sole hemorrhage, white line lesion, heel horn erosion, interdigital dermatitis, interdigital hyperplasia, and toe ulcer, and a hoof health index. De-regressed estimated breeding values from 25,580 Holstein animals were used as pseudo-phenotypes for the association analyses. The genomic quality control, genotype phasing, and genotype imputation were performed using the PLINK (version 1.9), Eagle (version 2.4.1), and Minimac4 software, respectively. The functional genomic analyses were performed using the GALLO R package and the DAVID platform. We identified 22, 34, 14, 22, 28, 33, 24, 43, and 15 significant markers for digital dermatitis, heel horn erosion, interdigital dermatitis, interdigital hyperplasia, sole hemorrhage, sole ulcer, toe ulcer, white line lesion disease, and the hoof health index, respectively. The significant markers were located across all autosomes, except BTA10, BTA12, BTA20, BTA26, BTA27, and BTA28. Moreover, the genomic regions identified overlap with various previously reported quantitative trait loci for exterior, health, meat and carcass, milk, production, and reproduction traits. The enrichment analyses identified 44 significant gene ontology terms. These enriched genomic regions harbor various candidate genes previously associated with bone development, metabolism, and infectious and immunological diseases. These findings indicate that hoof health traits are highly polygenic and influenced by a wide range of biological processes.

OBJECTIVE: To retrospectively analyze the preoperative clinical characteristics and surgical outcomes of evisceration with implantation of an intrascleral silicone prosthesis (EIISP) procedures in dogs and evaluate whether brachycephalic dogs are more prone than non-brachycephalic dogs to develop postoperative complications after EIISP. ANIMAL STUDIED: Ninety-One dogs (19 of which were brachycephalic) were included. PROCEDURES: Medical records from 2010 to 2019 were reviewed. Signalment, reason for EIISP, postoperative complications, follow-up time, and postoperative eye appearance were analyzed. RESULTS: The most frequently represented breeds were French Bulldog [11/91 (12%) dogs], Jack Russell Terrier [6/91 (7%)], and Shih Tzu [6/91 (7%)]. Brachycephalic dogs were statistically younger than non-brachycephalic dogs at the time of EIISP (p = 1.61 × 10-5 ). Uncontrolled glaucoma was the most common reason for EIISP in both groups. Short-term complications (from D0 to D15) seen in 7/91 (8%) dogs included epithelial corneal ulcers (n = 3), keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) (n = 2), and prosthesis extrusion (n = 2). Long-term complications seen in 26/91 (29%) dogs included KCS (n = 11), epithelial corneal ulcers (n = 7), stromal ulcers (n = 3), entropion (n = 4), and prosthesis extrusion (n = 1). Extrusion of the prosthesis occurred twice in eyes that had undergone diode laser transscleral cyclophotocoagulation. The risk of postoperative complications was not significantly different between brachycephalic and non-brachycephalic dogs (p = .3). CONCLUSIONS: Brachycephalic status in dogs does not appear to influence the risk of complications from EIISP. Nevertheless, the present study is a reminder that EIISP focuses on esthetics, and considering the possible complications associated with it, it does not provide a benefit to the patient compared to enucleation.

BACKGROUND: The existing literature does not contain information about the prevalence of gastric ulcers in mules, and on the potential associations between the presence of ulcers and work load, work type, diet, sex, age and body condition score (BCS). OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence and factors associated with mule gastric ulcer syndrome (MGUS) and evaluate its distribution in both mule squamous gastric disease (MSGD) and mule glandular gastric disease (MGGD) mucosa in a population of mules in Colombia. STUDY DESIGN: Observational, cross-sectional. METHODS: A total of 97 clinically healthy mules of different ages and locations in the province of Antioquia (Colombia) were included in this study. The mules were involved in agricultural activities (i.e., riding, pack and ranch mules) at the time of the study. The animals underwent gastroscopic evaluation, and ulcer scores from 0 to 4 were assigned based on severity, with scores ≥2 indicating clinical relevance. The presence or absence of ulcer in the squamous and/or glandular region of the stomach was recorded. Data related to work type, work load and diet, as well as sex, age and BCS were recorded for each mule. Pearson's chi-square test was used to determine the association between the outcomes and explanatory variables of the study (p ≤ 0.05). The results of the risk estimations were presented as odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS: The frequency of MGUS in the study population was 42%. Most of the lesions were located in the squamous region of the stomach (27%), mainly in the margo plicatus, and 20% were located in the glandular region, mainly in the fundus and pyloric antrum. Six animals showed lesions in both squamous and glandular regions. Work load was the only variable associated with the presence of MGUS (OR: 1.98; 95% CI: 0.49-0.96) and MSGD (OR: 1.78; 95% CI: 0.36-0.67). Nevertheless, the findings did not provide any significant risk assessment result, nor did they reveal any significant interactions among the other variables. MAIN LIMITATIONS: This study used convenience sampling from a limited geographic region, and multivariate analysis was not performed, one of the exclusion criteria was the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, which means that the effect of these drugs can no longer be evaluated. CONCLUSIONS: MGUS occurs in mules subjected to agricultural work, the risk factors associated with EGUS do not appear to be significant in mules and other equids subjected to the same conditions, in this region. Further research is needed to define the differential dynamics of MGUS in comparison with the findings in horses.


HISTORIAL: La literatura existente no contiene información sobre la prevalencia de úlceras gástricas en mulas, y sobre las potenciales asociaciones entre la presencia de ulceras y carga de trabajo, tipo de trabajo, dieta, sexo, edad y score de condición corporal (BCS). OBJETIVO: Estimar la prevalencia y factores asociados con síndrome de ulceración gástrica en mulas (MGUS) y evaluar su distribución tanto en la mucosa escamosa (MSGD) como glandular (MGGD) en una población de mulas en Colombia. DISEÑO DE ESTUDIO: Este estudio descriptivo observacional, seccional fue llevado a cabo por muestreo de conveniencia basado en estimación mínima de muestreo y una definición a priori con criterios de inclusión y exclusión. MÉTODOS: un total de 97 mulas clínicamente sanas de diferentes edades y localidades en la provincia de Antoquia (Colombia) fueron incluidas en este estudio. Las mulas estaban involucradas en actividades agrícolas (ie. monta, carga o rancho) en el momento de este estudio. Se les hizo una evaluación gastroscópica, se les dio un score de 0 a 4 basado en la severidad, con un score ≥2 indicando relevancia clínica. La presencia o ausencia de ulceras en la región escamosa y/o glandular del estomago fue anotada. Información relacionada con el tipo de trabajo, carga de trabajo y dieta, además del sexo, edad (joven, adulto, geriátrico), y el score de condición corporal fueron anotadas para cada mula. La prueba de Chi­cuadrado de Pearson fue usada para determinar la asociación entre los resultados y las variables explicativas del estudio (p ≤ 0.05). Los resultados de las estimaciones de riesgo fueron presentado como odds­ratios (ORs) con 95% de intervalo de confianza (CI). RESULTADOS: La frecuencia de MGUS en la población del estudio fue de 42%. Las mayoría de las lesiones fueron localizadas en la porción escamosa del estómago (27%), principalmente en el margo plicatus, y 20% fueron halladas en le región glandular, principalmente en el fondo y el antro pilórico. Seis animales presentaron lesiones en ambas regiones escamosa y glandular. La carga de trabajo estuvo variablemente asociada a la presencia de MGUS (OR: 1.98; 95% CI: 0.49­0.96) y MSGD (OR: 1.78; 95% CI: 0.36­0.67). Sin embargo, los hallazgos no proporcionaron resultados significativos de análisis de riesgo, y no revelaron ningunas interacciones entre las otras variables. LIMITACIONES PRINCIPALES: Este estudio utilizó muestreo de conveniencia de una región geográfica limitada, y no se llevaron a cabo análisis multivariados, un criterio de exclusión fue el uso de anti inflamatorios no esteroidales, lo que quiere decir que el efecto de estos fármacos ya no puede ser evaluado. CONCLUSIONES: MGUS ocurren en mulas haciendo trabajo agrícola, los factores de riesgo asociados a EGUS no parecen ser significativos en mulas y otros equinos sujetos a las mismas condiciones en esta región. Mas investigación es necesaria para definir la dinámica que diferencia a MGUS en comparación a los hallazgos en caballos.

Lesions in the oral cavity of dogs can be erythematous, leukoplakic, or pigmented in coloration. The diagnosis of oral erosions, ulcers, and white lesions in contrast to pigmented lesions in veterinary practice can be challenging. The most benign-looking oral ulcers can be associated with local malignant or systemic disease. Many factors are important in the evaluation and correct diagnosis of oral lesions, including medical and drug history, description of the lesion, number of lesions, depth of the lesion, biopsy technique, and correct histologic interpretation. The goal of this paper is to create a decision tree to guide the classification and proper diagnosis of canine oral mucosal lesions.

The cornea is comprised of 4 layers; the outermost layer is the epithelium, followed by the stroma, Descemet's membrane, and endothelium. Corneal descemetocele is a serious consequence of progressive corneal ulceration, characterized by a herniation of the Descemet membrane through an overlying stromal defect. It requires urgent intervention due to the risk of perforation. Although there are several treatments available for this type of corneal ulcer, conservative approaches may be inadequate due to the typical severity of this injury. Surgical interventions, including conjunctival autograft transplantation and corneoscleral transposition, are commonly used. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been used to effectively treat corneal ulcers, but there are limited reports regarding its use for descemetocele. A 7-year-old female shih tzu was diagnosed with descemetocele. In this dog, 2 × 106 MSCs, provided by CellTech - Stem Cell Technologies, were injected bilaterally into the conjunctiva, with an additional 5 × 105 MSCs applied topically to each eye. The ulcer achieved complete remission with an absence of corneal opacity after 75 d, supporting the claim that MSCs are an effective and safe option for the treatment of descemetocele. Key clinical message: The dog's descemetocele healed completely after a single application of MSCs after 30 d, with scars and leukoma completely absent after 75 d. No surgical intervention was required.


Thérapie cellulaire efficace de la descemétocèle chez un chien. La cornée est composée de quatre couches; la couche la plus externe est l'épithélium, suivi du stroma, de la membrane de Descemet et de l'endothélium. La descémétocèle cornéenne est une conséquence grave de l'ulcération cornéenne progressive, caractérisée par une hernie de la membrane de Descemet à travers un défaut stromal sus-jacent. Elle nécessite une intervention urgente en raison du risque de perforation. Bien qu'il existe plusieurs traitements disponibles pour ce type d'ulcère cornéen, les approches conservatrices peuvent être inadéquates en raison de la gravité typique de cette blessure. Les interventions chirurgicales, y compris une autogreffe conjonctivale et la transposition cornéosclérale, sont couramment utilisées. Les cellules souches mésenchymateuses (MSCs) ont été utilisées pour traiter efficacement les ulcères cornéens, mais il existe peu de rapports concernant leur utilisation pour la descemétocèle. Une femelle shih tzu de 7 ans a été diagnostiquée avec descemetocele. Chez ce chien, 2 × 106 MSCs, fournies par CellTech ­ Stem Cell Technologies, ont été injectées bilatéralement dans la conjonctive, avec 5 × 105 MSCs supplémentaires appliquées localement sur chaque oeil. L'ulcère a obtenu une rémission complète avec une absence d'opacité cornéenne après 75 jours, soutenant l'affirmation selon laquelle les MSCs sont une option efficace et sûre pour le traitement de la descemétocèle.Message clinique clé:La descemétocèle de ce chien a complètement guéri après une seule application de MSCs après 30 jours, avec des cicatrices et un leucome complètement absents après 75 jours. OBJECTIVE: To assess the relationship between plasma and RBC fatty acid composition and incidence and severity of squamous gastric ulcers when altered by short-chain (SC) or long-chain (LC) polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) supplementation. ANIMALS: 13 fit Thoroughbred horses in training. PROCEDURES: Horses were evaluated by gastroscopy for squamous ulcer score, gastric pH, and blood fatty acid composition prior to supplementation (UNSUPP) and after 3 months of supplementation with a corn-flax oil blend of alpha-linolenic acid and linoleic acid (SC-PUFA) or a gamma-linolenic acid (GLA)-fish oil blend of GLA, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA; LC-PUFA) in a crossover design. Prior to gastroscopy and blood collection, horses performed a 4,600-m standardized exercise test on the racetrack as a stressor. RESULTS: Three months of supplementation with LC-PUFAs increased RBC levels of GLA, dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid (DGLA), arachidonic acid (AA), EPA, and DHA, and reduced severe ulcer prevalence (38% UNSUPP vs 8% LC-PUFA with a severe ulcer score of grade 3 to 4). Short-chain PUFA supplementation did not effectively elevate RBC GLA, DGLA, AA, EPA, or DHA and severe ulcer incidence was not different (38% UNSUPP vs 23% SC-PUFA with a severe ulcer score of grade 3 to 4). Lower levels of RBC GLA, DGLA, AA, and EPA correlated with severe squamous gastric ulceration (grade 3 to 4). CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Equine gastric ulcer syndrome is prevalent in high-performance horses and is a concern to owners and trainers. Long-chain PUFA supplementation increased levels of GLA, DGLA, AA, EPA, and DHA, unlike SC-PUFA supplementation, and was associated positively with prevention or resolution of severe squamous gastric ulceration. Further studies are needed to evaluate different management styles and exercise intensities.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to describe the endoscopic appearance of gastroduodenal ulcers (GDUs), and to assess the clinical, ultrasonographic and histological data, as well as long-term follow-up, in cats. METHODS: The medical record databases of five veterinary endoscopists were evaluated between January 2016 and 2020, in a retrospective study. Cats with at least one gastric or duodenal ulcer detected by endoscopic examination were included. All the medical records of the selected cats were reviewed and information was collected regarding breed, age, sex, neuter status, medical history, clinical signs, and ultrasonographic, endoscopic and histological findings. The cats were evaluated at 6, 12 and 18 months. RESULTS: Sixty-one cats with a median age of 9.0 years (range 2.0-16.0) were included in the study. The most common complaints were vomiting (n = 55; 90%) and hyporexia (n = 40; 66%); haematemesis was reported in 12 (20%) cats. Endoscopy showed GDUs in the following locations: gastric body in 28 cats (46%), antropyloric area in 34 cats (56%), fundus in 13 cats (21%) and duodenum in eight cats (13%). A single GDU was found in 42 cats (69%) and multiple GDUs were seen in 19 cats (31%). Histopathological evaluation revealed benign lesions in 33 (54%) cats and malignant lesions in 28 (46%; 24 high-grade lymphoma, one low-grade lymphoma and three carcinoma). High-grade lymphoma was detected only in the stomach. Cats diagnosed with malignant GDUs (median 10.5, range 4-16) were significantly older than cats with benign lesions (P = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: GDUs are common and were detected in 5.1% of cats undergoing an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. The risk of a malignant ulcer increases proportionally with each year of increasing age. GDU location, number and morphological appearance do not provide any indication of the nature of the ulcer; however, duodenal ulcers are frequently benign. Endoscopic examination facilitates the early and minimally invasive detection of GDUs in cats.

OBJECTIVE: To report the outcomes of dogs that underwent primary repair of gastroduodenal perforations associated with the administration of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID). A secondary objective was to identify clinicopathological findings that predisposed dogs to postoperative death. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. ANIMALS: Eleven dogs with complete gastric or duodenal perforation related to administration of an NSAID that underwent primary surgical repair. METHODS: Medical records were reviewed for dogs that presented with peritonitis due to a complete gastroduodenal perforation while receiving NSAIDs between November, 2011 and January, 2021. Data collected included patient characteristics, clinical signs, clinicopathological results, surgical details, and postoperative management and outcome. RESULTS: All dogs were large breeds (mean weight 42 kg; range 22-75 kg), with a mean age of 7.35 years. Nine dogs from a total of 11 (82 %) received a concurrent corticosteroid and NSAID, or a higher dose/frequency/length of NSAID administration than recommended by the manufacturer. All gastroduodenal perforations were found in the upper gastrointestinal tract. Eight of 11 (73%) dogs survived to discharge. The median postoperative duration of follow up was 444 days (range 2-1460 days). No association was detected between ulcer size or location and mortality. CONCLUSION: Most dogs who underwent primary repair of complete gastroduodenal ulcers survived. Gastroduodenal perforations were generally due to the administration of higher or longer doses of NSAIDs, or concurrent administration of another NSAID or corticosteroid. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Primary closure may be associated with a high success rate in dogs with full thickness gastroduodenal ulcers.

The largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides is an important freshwater aquaculture fish in China. Recently, largemouth bass at a fish farm in Guangdong province experienced an outbreak of a serious ulcer disease. As part of the investigations conducted to identify the aetiology and identify potentially effective control measures, we isolated a pathogenic bacterium (NK-1 strain) from the diseased fish. It was identified as Nocardia seriolae through morphological observation, physiological and biochemical analysis, and molecular identification, and its pathogenicity was verified by experimental infection. Pathological changes in the diseased fish included granulomatous lesions in the liver and spleen, destruction of renal tubules, necrosis of intestinal epithelial cells, infiltration of inflammatory cells in the brain, vacuolation of cells, and swelling and cracking of the mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum. Bacterial detection using qPCR showed that the spleen and intestine were the main organs targeted by N. seriolae. The mortality of largemouth bass experimentally infected with N. seriolae at 21°C was significantly lower than that in fish infected at higher temperatures between 24 and 33°C; there were no significant differences in the levels of mortality at these higher temperatures. The level of mortality of largemouth bass infected with N. seriolae was lowest at a neutral water pH of 7 but increased significantly at higher and lower pH. Of the tested Chinese herbal medicines, Chinese sumac Galla chinensis and Chinese skullcap Scutellaria baicalensis exhibited the best antibacterial effects. This study lays a foundation for the clinical diagnosis and scientific control of ulcer disease in largemouth bass.

This observational cohort study enrolled cows from 7 freestall dairy herds in Minnesota and Wisconsin. The objective was to estimate the causal role of hyperketonemia on new sole ulcer and white line hoof lesions (SUWL). Multiparous cows were enrolled at the time of their precalving hoof trim, at the end of their previous lactation. Enrolled cows were hoof trimmed twice: precalving between 90 to 21 d before calving (n = 2,037), and postcalving between 21 to 150 d after calving (n = 1,408). We trained 7 commercial hoof trimmers, employed by the farms, in lesion identification to standardize lesion recording. Hoof trimmers conducted therapeutic trimming as well as diagnosing and treating lesions. After parturition, cows between 3 and 16 d in milk were tested once weekly for hyperketonemia using a hand-held ketone meter. Farm staff and research personnel conducted the ß-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) testing. Cows were classified as hyperketonemic (HYK+) if they had a blood BHB ≥1.2 mmol/L or hyperketonemia-negative (HYK-) if blood BHB <1.2 mmol/L. At the precalving hoof trim, 15.6% of cows trimmed had a lesion and 1.9% of cows had a SUWL; thus, cows with a SUWL were excluded from further analysis (n = 38). At the postcalving hoof trim, 25.8% of cows trimmed had a hoof lesion, and 3.6% of cows had a SUWL. The most prevalent lesions at the pre- and postcalving hoof trims were digital dermatitis and corkscrew lesions. The incidence of hyperketonemia among cows was 21.1% (421/1,999) and the incidence on farms ranged from 5.7 to 29.1%. After excluding cows due to being hoof trimmed outside our designated window, the multilevel logistic regression model for the odds of SUWL at the postcalving hoof trim included 1,209 cows (HYK+ = 257/1,209; SUWL = 42/1,209). The odds of having SUWL in HYK+ was 0.66 (95% confidence interval: 0.29, 1.49) times the odds of that for HYK- cows. For cows diagnosed with a lesion (digital dermatitis, corkscrew, toe, foot rot, or other lesion) at their precalving hoof trim (n = 199), the odds of having SUWL for HYK+ cows were 0.43 (95% confidence interval: 0.05, 3.92) times the odds of that for HYK- cows. The wide range of compatible causal estimates suggest that hyperketonemia likely has a limited role in the development of SUWL in cows with or without a hoof lesion precalving. Future research should investigate other transition period factors such as inflammation or structural changes to the foot that may have a causative role in the development of SUWL.

BACKGROUND: Liver disease is frequently cited as a cause of gastroduodenal ulceration (GDU) in dogs but studies regarding GDU and liver disease are limited. OBJECTIVES: To document the presence of GDU in dogs with liver disease. ANIMALS: Forty dogs that underwent liver biopsy, computed tomographic (CT) angiography or both at the University of Florida Small Animal Hospital to diagnose congenital or acquired liver disease. METHODS: Cross-sectional study. Dogs had gastroduodenoscopy performed with photographic and video documentation in a standardized fashion. Lesions (hemorrhage, erosions, ulcers) in the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum were scored based on a grading scale. Presence of esophageal varices was recorded. Dogs were categorized into 4 groups according to cause of liver disease (inflammatory disease, cirrhosis, congenital, other). Presence or absence of ulcers, erosions or both as well as total endoscopic scores were compared among groups. RESULTS: Forty dogs were enrolled with the following distribution: 13 congenital, 13 inflammatory, 3 cirrhosis, and 11 other. Four dogs had GDU (10%; 95% confidence interval [CI], 3%-24%) and 6 dogs had erosions (15%; 95% CI, 6%-30%). No difference was found in total endoscopic score (P = .21) or in the proportion of dogs with ulcers, erosions or both versus those without (P = .25) among the groups. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: Gastroduodenal ulceration was found in 10% of dogs with liver disease in this population. Additional studies are warranted to confirm these findings in larger numbers of dogs with specific disease etiologies.

A Gram-stain-negative, strictly aerobic, motile, rod-shaped bacterium with monopolar flagella, designated as MC042T, was isolated from the profound head ulcers of farmed Murray cod sampled from Zhejiang Province, China. Analysis of its 16S rRNA gene sequence and multilocus sequence analysis phylogeny showed that strain MC042T belonged to the genus Pseudomonas, showing the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to Pseudomonas juntendi BML3T (98.9 %), and less than 98.8 % similarity to other Pseudomonas species with validly published names. Whole-genome sequencing and phylogenetic reconstruction based on a core set of 1563 Pseudomonas genes further indicated that strain MC042T was most closely related to the clade formed by Pseudomonas protegens CHA0T and Pseudomonas saponiphila DSM 975T and distantly related to any of the validly published species of the genus Pseudomonas. Furthermore, strain MC042T could be distinguished from its closely related species of the genus Pseudomonas by its ability to assimilate maltose, d-xylose and melibiose, but not d-mannitol. The principal fatty acids were C16 : 0, summed feature 3 (iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1ω7c) and summed feature 8 (C18 : 1 ω7c and/or C18 : 1 ω6c). The respiratory quinone was Q-9. Polar lipids of strain MC042T comprised diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, unidentified glycolipids, an unidentified lipid, an unknown glycolipid and aminolipid. Based on its phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic features, strain MC042T is considered to represent a novel species, for which the name Pseudomonas piscis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is MC042T (=KCTC 72033T=MCCC 1K03575T).

Rhodococcus equi infection in horses is common and is characterized by pyogranulomatous pneumonia and ulcerative enterocolitis. R. equi clinical disease in cattle, however, is rare and typically manifests as granulomatous lymphadenitis discovered in the abattoir. A 19-mo-old female Santa Gertrudis had a history of intermittent inappetence and weight loss for a 3-mo period before euthanasia. Gross and histologic examination revealed severe, chronic, ulcerative, and granulomatous inflammation in the tongue, pharynx, and small intestine. Also, the heifer had severe, granulomatous pharyngeal and mesenteric lymphadenitis. Bacterial cultures from the ileum, tongue, and liver yielded numerous-to-moderate numbers of R. equi. PCR analysis of the isolate detected the linear virulence plasmid vapN, which is often identified in bovine isolates (traA- and vapN-positive). The bacteria also lack the circular plasmids vapA and vapB that are associated with virulence in horses and swine, respectively. We report herein an atypical and unusual clinical presentation of R. equi infection in cattle, which has zoonotic potential.

A farm-level stochastic simulation model was modified to estimate the cost per case of 3 foot disorders (digital dermatitis, sole ulcer, and white line disease) by parity group and incidence timing. Disorder expenditures considered within the model included therapeutics, outside labor, and on-farm labor. Disorder losses considered within the model included discarded milk, reduced milk production, extended days open, an increased risk of culling, an increased risk of death (natural or euthanized), and disease recurrence. All estimates of expenditures and losses were defined using data from previously published research in stochastic distributions. Stochastic simulation was used to account for variation within the farm model; 1,000 iterations were run. Sensitivity of foot disorder costs to selected market prices (milk price, feed price, replacement heifer price, and slaughter price) and herd-specific performance variables (pregnancy rate) were analyzed. Using our model assumptions, the cost per disorder case over all combinations of parity group and incidence timing, regardless of incidence likelihood, was lowest for digital dermatitis ($64 ± 24; mean ± standard deviation), followed by white line disease ($152 ± 26) and sole ulcer ($178 ± 29). Disorder costs were greater in multiparous versus primiparous cows and were always highest at the beginning of lactation. The greatest contributing cost categories were decreased milk production, an increased risk of culling, and disease recurrence. The contribution of cost categories to the total cost of disorder varied by disorder type, parity group, and incidence timing. For all disorders, the cost per case increased as milk price or replacement heifer price increased and decreased as feed price, pregnancy rate, or slaughter price increased. Understanding how foot disorder costs change according to cow-specific conditions (i.e., disorder type, parity group, and days in milk at incidence) and herd-specific conditions (i.e., market prices and performance variables) can help improve on-farm decisions about treatment and prevention of foot disorders.

A 23-year-old, 425-g male African grey parrot ( Psittacus erithacus) was evaluated for chronic ulcerative dermatitis of the axillary regions under both wings. Initial swab cultures of the sites had revealed a coagulase-positive methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureas (MRSA) with marked antibiotic resistance. A second swab culture obtained 8 weeks after the initial culture showed heavy growth of a coagulase-positive Staphylococcus species, which could not be speciated, but showed the same sensitivity as the previous culture. Previous treatment included systemic antibiotics and a topical antimicrobial cream, with variable response and only temporary resolution. On examination, full-thickness, ulcerative, necrotic dermatitis was present under both wings with intermittent bleeding and subdermal tissue exposure. Initial treatment included wound debridement, oral antibiotics, topical therapy, analgesics, and bandages. After a relapse, a poloxamer gel containing 2% doxycycline, 1% chloramphenicol, and 0.5% mupirocin was used in combination with oral antibiotics and analgesics. On follow-up examination, the skin lesions had completely resolved and the patient was doing well and remains normal 4 years later. This report emphasizes the importance of prompt, aggressive multi-modal therapy for MRSA and other dermal bacterial infections in pet birds that may represent zoonoses or have carrier-state zoonotic potential. Preparation by a compounding pharmacy of a transdermal poloxamer gel containing antibiotics shows promise for severe, infected, ulcerative skin lesions in birds when other therapies fail to achieve a cure.

We reviewed 11 cases of superficial chronic ulcerative dermatitis (SCUD) in psittacine birds that presented to an exotic animal practice over an 8-year period. African grey parrots ( Psittacus erithacus) were overrepresented, accounting for 55% of SCUD-affected birds. All affected birds were hand-reared pets and bonded strongly to their owners. In all cases, fungal culture results were negative. The most commonly cultured bacteria were Enterobacter cloacae (27%), followed by Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus (both 18%). An underlying cause of behavioral self-mutilation with secondary infection of dermatitis lesions by opportunistic bacteria was suspected in 10 of 11 cases. The axillae were the most common anatomic sites affected (45%). In two cases, more than one site was affected concurrently. Mean age of birds affected was 11.4 years. Two birds had suffered from SCUD previously, with 1 bird having suffered from 3 previous episodes and was euthanized as a result. All birds were treated with systemic antibiotics, topical antibacterial preparations, and systemic nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. A neck collar was applied in all cases. Median time to clinical resolution was 2 months (range, 1-21 months). Excluding the bird that was euthanized, all birds showed a positive response to treatment.

OBJECTIVES: To describe clinical and imaging findings in dogs with confirmed gastrointestinal ulceration, to compare findings in dogs with perforated and non-perforated ulcers and to estimate the sensitivities of radiography, ultrasonography and computed tomography (CT) for gastrointestinal ulceration and perforation. METHODS: Retrospective review of medical records of 82 dogs that had a macroscopic ulcer in the gastric or intestinal mucosa diagnosed directly at endoscopy, surgery or necropsy and had survey radiography, ultrasonography or a CT scan of the abdomen during the same period of hospitalisation. RESULTS: The most frequent clinical signs were vomiting in 88% dogs, haematemesis in 32%, melaena in 31% and weight loss in 7%. The most frequent imaging findings in dogs with non-perforated ulcers were gastrointestinal mural lesion in 56%, mucosal defect compatible with an ulcer in 44% and peritoneal fluid in 21%. In dogs with perforated ulcers the most frequent imaging findings were peritoneal fluid in 83%, gastrointestinal mural lesion in 48%, peritoneal gas in 31% and mucosal defect compatible with an ulcer in 29%. Sensitivities of radiography, ultrasonography and CT were 30, 65 and 67% in dogs with non-perforated ulcers and 79, 86 and 93% in dogs with perforated ulcers, respectively. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: In dogs with non-perforated ulcers, survey radiography was usually negative whereas ultrasonography and CT frequently enabled detection of the site of the ulcer; in dogs with perforated ulcers, radiography was frequently positive for peritoneal gas and CT was a sensitive modality for both the ulcer and signs of perforation.

Gizzard erosion and ulceration (GEU) caused by fowl aviadenovirus serotype 1 (FAdV-1) of the species Fowl aviadenovirus A (FAdV-A) represents an economically important problem in poultry production. The disease affects mostly young chicken broilers or layers before production. In this study, an unusual GEU outbreak in a flock of laying hens at 38weeks of age is described. The affected flock showed elevated mortality rates, with the highest number of dead birds appearing between the 39th and 40th week of life, with a subsequent reduction in laying performance and decreased total egg weight. Post-mortem examination showed the presence of erosion in multiple areas of the gizzard, with wall perforation in the proximity of the interventriculus. FAdV antibodies were detected in all examined sera with an ELISA assay. The virus was isolated from pathologically altered gizzards. PCR, subsequent sequencing and phylogenetic analysis of the partial hexon gene confirmed the presence of FAdV-A DNA. To investigate the molecular background of FAdV-A which causes GEU in adult hens, whole genome sequencing was performed on two FAdV-A strains - strain W-15, obtained from the outbreak described in this study and strain 61/11z, isolated from a GEU outbreak in 3-week-old broiler chickens in 2011. The genome size of FAdV-A W-15 is 43,849bp. Genome sequence and genome organization resembles those of the reference, apathogenic CELO strain and the newly sequenced GEU strain, 61/11z. Most amino acid changes, between CELO and GEU strains, were observed in ORF0, ORF1, ORF14, IVa2, polymerase, pIIIa, penton base and fiber-2. Analysis conducted on the translated ORFs revealed that W-15 and 61/11z are nearly identical, with the highest rate of amino acid mutations in pTP, 100K, ORF9 and ORF10. In this study, the occurrence of GEU, caused by FAdV-1 infection, in adult layer chickens and the effects of such infection on egg production parameters are described in detail. Moreover, the whole genome sequences of two pathogenic, GEU inducing FAdV-A strains have been provided and characterized for the first time, which in the future will help to pinpoint the viral factors involved in pathogenicity.

This paper reports eleven cases of ulcerative and granulomatous enteritis associated with Molineus torulosus parasitism in different species of neotropical primates of the Sapajus genus. All of the affected monkeys had been apprehended by the environmental police and were being treated in a rehabilitation center for wild animals. The clinical history was weight loss and debility. During the necropsy, several nodules were found on the duodenum and proximal jejunum wall, with ulcers on the adjacent intestinal mucosa, including the nodules in the pancreas of four monkeys. Histologically, eosinophilic granulomas were observed in the small intestine, associated with fibrosis, eggs and adult models of Trichostrongylidae, etiology consistent with Molineus torulosus. This study describes the first cases of parasitism in Sapajus flavius, a species previously considered extinct, but recently rediscovered, and presents the occurrence of M. torulosus in two other species, Sapajus libidinosus and Sapajus apella.(AU)


São relatados 11 casos de enterite ulcerativa e granulomatosa associada ao parasitismo por Molineus torulosus em diferentes espécies de primatas neotropicais do gênero Sapajus. Todos os macacos afetados haviam sido apreendidos pela polícia ambiental e estavam sendo tratados em um centro de reabilitação de animais silvestres. O histórico clínico era de emagrecimento e debilidade. Durante a necropsia, foram constatados diversos nódulos na parede do duodeno e jejuno proximal, com úlceras na mucosa intestinal adjacente, além de nódulos no pâncreas de quatro macacos. Histologicamente, observou-se no intestino delgado, granulomas eosinofílicos associados à fibrose, ovos e exemplares adultos de tricostrongilídeos, etiologia consistente com Molineus torulosus. O presente trabalho descreve os primeiros casos de parasitismo em Sapajus flavius, uma espécie antes considerada extinta e recentemente redescoberta, e relata a ocorrência de M. torulosus em outras duas espécies, Sapajus libidinosus e Sapajus apella.(AU)

Bovine digital dermatitis (BDD)-associated 'non-healing' white line disease (nhWLD) and 'non-healing' sole ulcers (nhSU) are increasingly encountered in cattle. Using established PCR protocols, 42 nhWLD/nhSU, 25 BDD and 15 common WLD DNA isolates were screened for the presence of Treponema DNA. Obtained amplicons were identified by gel electrophoresis and sequencing. Independent from their source, Treponema DNA was isolated from all lesions, but the lesion type varied with the detected Treponema phylotypes. Whilst Treponema pedis was omnipresent, T. medium was almost exclusively identified in BDD and associated nhWLD/nhSU lesions when compared to common WLD. This observation was confirmed by specific T. medium PCR scoring positive for all BDD and nhWLD/nhSU lesions, but for only 1/15 (6.7%) common WLD lesions. It is suggested that T. medium may have an active role in the pathogenesis of nhWLD/nhSU but further work is needed to verify this concept.
