RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To improve the safety and reliability of gastric ulcer treatment, the emergence of digestive endoscopy technology in recent years has become a conventional method for the diagnosis of peptic ulcer bleeding. Endoscopic characteristics can judge the severity of patients more accurately and comprehensively, provide a basis for follow-up treatment, and judge the prognosis. METHODS: 298 patients with a suspected gastric ulcer who underwent laryngeal gastroduodenal endoscopy and confirmed gastroduodenal ulcer in our hospital in recent half a year were randomly selected. Olympus cv-170 electronic gastroscope machine was used to carry out gastroscopy for patients with gastric ulcers, analyze, and judge the number of bleeding cases in different stages of treatment, such as lesion type, lesion location, patient age, and gender. The statistics of bleeding cycle and bleeding volume, prognosis recovery, and the correlation of different risk levels were analyzed. RESULTS: After examination and diagnosis, the patients were followed up for one year. According to the number of bleeding cases, bleeding cycle, and bleeding volume of patients with different ulcer locations in the acute stage, healing stage, and scar stage, the distribution of bleeding cases of different ulcer locations in different stages was roughly the same, and there was no significant difference. The proportion of bleeding cases in the acute stage was the highest, while the proportion in the healing stage was the lowest. The number of bleeding cases, bleeding cycle, bleeding volume, and related symptoms in patients with gastric ulcers during the treatment were significantly correlated with those in the acute stage, healing stage, and scar stage. There was no significant difference in the distribution of bleeding in one year among different stages of ulcer in the same age group, however, the bleeding in one year would be more serious with the increase of age in different age groups. Gender differences have a great impact on the bleeding of the ulcer within one year. It usually shows that the bleeding of ulcers in males is more serious than that in females. CONCLUSION: The location and pathological development of gastric ulcers can be found in time through gastroscopy, and the status of gastroscopy can be analyzed. Most gastric ulcers are acute bleeding. The amount of bleeding has little correlation with the stage of gastric ulcer, and it is related to the location of bleeding. The older the age, the greater the amount of bleeding, and the amount of bleeding in men is greater than that in women. In the treatment of gastric ulcers, gastroscopy, as a doctor's examination and treatment method, effectively improves the safety and reliability of clinical treatment of gastric ulcer bleeding and reduces the adverse risk.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of refined moxibustion on expression of gastric mucosal epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and changes of metabolite profiles in gastric ulcer (GU) rats, so as to analyze its mechanism underlying improvement of GU. METHODS: Male SD rats were randomized into control, model, acupoint moxibustion groups (n=6 per group). The GU model was induced by cold-restraint stress. The ignited refined moxa was applied to bilateral "Liangmen" (ST21) and "Zusanli" (ST36) for 3 cones/acupoint, once daily for 7 days. Then, we employed 1H NMR-based metabolomics approach to analyze the metabolic profiles of serum and stomach tissue samples. The conventional histopathological changes of the gastric mucosa were observed by H.E. stain and the expressions of EGFR and VEGF in the gastric mucosa were detected by immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: Compared to the control group, the expression levels of EGFR and VEGF were significantly increased in the model group (P<0.01, P<0.05), and further notably up-regulated in the acupoint moxibustion group (P<0.001, P<0.01). Results of H.E. staining showed damage of the folds of gastric mucosa, disordered arrangement of the glands, infiltration of inflammatory cells and unclear structure of gastric mucosa in the model group, which was relatively milder in the acupoint moxibustion group. 1H-NMR technical analysis showed that in comparison with the control group, 11 and 11 metabolites in the stomach extract and plasma were increased, 10 in the gastric tissue and 3 in the plasma were decreased in the GU model group; while in comparison with the model group, 17 differently expressed metabolites in the gastric extract and 10 metabolites in the plasma restored to their levels of control group after the acupoint moxibustion intervention. These metabolites participate in 12 metabolic pathways including glycine, serine and threonine metabolism, glutathione metabolism, glycine metabolism, alanine, aspartic acid and glutamic acid metabolism, purine metabolism, glyoxylic acid and digarboxylic acid metabolism, biosynthesis of aminoacyl-tRNA, amino sugar and nucleotide sugar metabolism, cysteine and methionine metabolism, citrate cycle, pyruvate metabolism, and the mutual conversion of pentose and glucuronate, suggesting their involvement in moxibustion-induced improvement of GU. CONCLUSION: Refined moxibustion at ST21 and ST36 can up-regulate the expression of EGFR and VEGF in the gastric mucosa and lessen gastric mucosal injury, which may be related to its effects in reducing GU-induced metabolic disorders, including sugar, purine, amino acid, and phospholipid metabolism and antioxidant defense system.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Alcoholic gastric ulcers are currently a common upper gastrointestinal disease with a high recurrence rate, causing gastric perforation or even gastric cancer in severe cases. Lactobacillus rhamnosus was previously found to prevent alcoholic gastric ulcers, but its therapeutic effects were not illustrated. AIMS: This study aims to illustrate the preventive and therapeutic effects of L. rhamnosus SHA113 cells and their culture supernatant on alcoholic gastric ulcers and explore the related mechanisms. METHODS: An alcoholic gastric ulcer model was established by feeding mice with 75% ethanol once at a dosage of 10 ml per kg body weight. The L. rhamnosus SHA113 cells (SHA) and their culture supernatant (SHA-FS) were separately used to feed mice for 2 weeks before ethanol injury in preventive experiments and for 2 days after ethanol injury in therapeutic experiments. The mechanisms were analyzed in view of anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory activities and intestinal barrier functions. RESULTS: The preventive effects of SHA-FS were much better than those of SHA via similar mechanisms, such as promoting the secretion of mucus, improving the antioxidant capacity of the gastric mucosa, and inhibiting inflammation. In terms of the therapeutic effects, SHA-FS and SHA could accelerate the healing of damaged ulcers by improving the secretion of tight junction proteins and mucus proteins, increasing angiogenesis, and inhibiting the apoptosis of gastric epithelial cells. CONCLUSION: L. rhamnosus SHA113 and its culture supernatant had preventive and therapeutic effects on alcoholic gastric ulcers via anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory pathways and the promotion of healing of damaged ulcers by enhancing intestinal barrier functions, respectively.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Gastroduodenal ulcer perforation is a common abdominal emergency that may be curable without surgical repair in non-elderly patients with localized and stable symptoms. However, the outcomes of nonoperative approaches have rarely been described. METHODS: Using a Japanese national inpatient database, we identified 14,918 patients with gastroduodenal ulcer perforation who were hospitalized and received nonoperative treatment from July 2010 to March 2017. We categorized these patients into three groups according to age: 18 to 64 years (young group, n=8407), 65 to 74 years (old group, n=2616), and ≥75 years (old-old group, n=3895). We investigated the characteristics, treatments, and outcomes in each group. RESULTS: Most of the patients were men (71%), and the median patient age was 62 years (interquartile range, 47-75 years). The old and old-old groups had more comorbidities than the young group. Whereas most patients were administered proton pump inhibitors and various antibiotics (96% and 90%, respectively), only 58% of patients underwent gastric tube placement. Surgical repair >3 days after admission was performed in 7.1% of all patients (6.3% vs. 7.9% vs. 5.5%, P<0.001). The old and old-old groups showed higher mortality (1.4% vs. 8.3% vs. 18%, P<0.001) and morbidity (6.6% vs. 15% vs. 17%, P<0.001) than the young group. The median length of stay was almost 2 weeks (13 vs. 17 vs. 20 days, P<0.001). DISCUSSION: Unlike previous studies, many patients aged >65 years received nonoperative treatment in this nationwide cohort. Our findings provide useful information for clinicians and patients hospitalized for gastric ulcer perforation.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of electroacupuncture preconditioning at "Zusanli"(ST36,Lower Confluent point) and "Zhongwan"(CV12,Front-Mu point) combination on oxidative stress and inflammation-related indicators, Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), myeloid differentiation factor 88 (MyD88) and inhibitor-α of nuclear transcription factor κB (IκB-α) in serum and gastric tissue of rats with stress gastric ulcer(SGU),so as to explore its mechanisms underlying prevention of SGU. METHODS: A total of 36 Wistar rats were randomly divided into blank control, model, positive drug and He-Sea-Front-Mu point combination groups (n=9 in each group). A rat model of SGU was established by restraint water-immersion stress method. Ten days before mode-ling, rats in the He-Sea-Front-Mu point combination group received electroacupuncture (2 Hz, 0.6 mA)at ST36 and CV12 for 10 min once every other day for 10 days, and those in the positive drug group was treated by gavage of omeprazole (20 mg/kg) once every other day for 10 days. The morphology of the gastric mucosa was observed by naked eyes and hematoxylin-eosin staining, and the ulcer index (UI) and lesion score were calculated. TBA and colorimetric methods, ELISA and Western blot were used to detect malondialdehyde (MDA), myeloperoxidase (MPO), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels and the relative expressions of TLR4, MyD88, and IκB-α protein, separately. RESULTS: The gastric mucosa of rats in the blank control group was smooth and intact, the cells were arranged neatly, and there was no telangiec-tasia, hyperemia and inflammatory cell infiltration. The gastric mucosal epithelial structure of rats in the model group was destroyed, and a large number of mucosal epithelial cell death and inflammatory cell infiltration were seen. The degree of gastric mucosal injury and inflammatory cell infiltration in the positive drug group and the combined point group was less than that in the model group. Compared with the blank control group, the UI and lesion score of rats in the model group were significantly increased (P<0.05), the levels of MDA and MPO in the serum and gastric tissues were significantly increased (P<0.05), GSH-Px was significantly reduced (P<0.05), the contents of TNF-α and IL-6 in serum were markedly increased (P<0.05), the expression levels of TLR4 and MyD88 proteins in gastric tissue were significantly increased (P<0.05), IκB-α was significantly reduced (P<0.05). After intervention and in comparison with the model group showed that, the UI and lesion score, the levels of MDA and MPO, contents of serum TNF-α and IL-6, expression levels of TLR4 and MyD88 proteins in positive drug and He-Sea-Front-Mu point combination groups were significantly decreased (P<0.05), while GSH-Px and IκB-α were significantly increased (P<0.05); There were no significant differences in the above indicators between the positive drug and the He-Sea-Front -Mu point combination groups (except TNF-α). CONCLUSION: Electroacupuncture preconditioning at ST36 and CV12 can prevent SGU, which may be related to its effects in anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and regulating TLR4/MyD88/IκB signaling pathway.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The incidence of peptic ulcer disease (PUD) has been decreasing over time with Helicobacter pylori eradication and use of acid-suppressing therapies. However, PUD remains a common cause of hospitalization in the United States. We aimed to evaluate contemporary national trends in the incidence, treatment patterns, and outcomes for PUD-related hospitalizations and compare care delivery by hospital rurality. METHODS: Data from the National Inpatient Sample were used to estimate weighted annual rates of PUD-related hospitalizations. Temporal trends were evaluated by joinpoint regression and expressed as annual percent change with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). We determined the proportion of hospitalizations requiring endoscopic and surgical interventions, stratified by clinical presentation and rurality. Multivariable logistic regression was used to assess independent predictors of in-hospital mortality and postoperative morbidity. RESULTS: There was a 25.8% reduction (P < 0.001) in PUD-related hospitalizations from 2005 to 2014, although the rate of decline decreased from -7.2% per year (95% CI: 13.2% to -0.7%) before 2008 to -2.1% per year (95% CI: 3.0% to -1.1%) after 2008. In-hospital mortality was 2.4% (95% CI: 2.4%-2.5%). Upper endoscopy (84.3% vs 78.4%, P < 0.001) and endoscopic hemostasis (26.1% vs 16.8%, P < 0.001) were more likely to be performed in urban hospitals, whereas surgery was performed less frequently (9.7% vs 10.5%, P < 0.001). In multivariable logistic regression, patients managed in urban hospitals were at higher risk for postoperative morbidity (odds ratio 1.16 [95% CI: 1.04-1.29]), but not death (odds ratio 1.11 [95% CI: 1.00-1.23]). DISCUSSION: The rate of decline in hospitalization rates for PUD has stabilized over time, although there remains significant heterogeneity in treatment patterns by hospital rurality.

RESUMO

Human-like collagen (HLC), the collagen produced using fermentation technology, has been demonstrated previously to promote wound healing. However, the healing property of HLC in gastric ulcers remains to be verified. In this study, we investigated the healing efficacy and healing mechanisms of HLC on gastric ulcers. To investigate whether HLC still has healing activity on gastric ulcers after gastric digestion, we simulated gastric digestion in vitro to obtain a human-like collagen digestion product (HLCP) and used it as the control drug. A chronic gastric ulcer model induced by 60% acetic acid in rats was used to evaluate the healing effect of gastric ulcers in this study. The results showed that oral administration of HLC or HLCP for 4 or 7 days promoted ulcer healing, which can be directly observed by significant reductions in ulcer area. The oral administration of HLC and HLCP significantly increased the protein expression of growth factors (EGF, HGF, VEGF, bFGF and TGF-ß1) and the HGF receptor (HGFr), promoted collagen deposition, regulated the activity of NOS, and decreased pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-a, il-6, il-10) and endothelin-1 (ET-1) levels in gastric tissue. Moreover, cell experiments showed that the effects of HLC on cell proliferation and migration are mainly caused by its digestion products. These findings indicate that HLC may be used as a nutritional supplement or therapeutic drug to promote the healing of gastric ulcers.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The aim of this study was to identify factors affecting persistent gastric regenerating atypia and determine the effect of Helicobacter pylori eradication on the course of this lesion. METHODS: In cross-sectional setting, comprehensive health check-up subjects who underwent both endoscopy and H. pylori test from 2001 to 2009 were included. The association between H. pylori and gastric regenerating atypia was evaluated. In cohort setting, patients with regenerating atypia who underwent H. pylori test from 2001 to 2013 were included. Factors affecting positive pathology (persistent regenerating atypia or new development of neoplasm) in patients with regenerating atypia at baseline were investigated. RESULTS: In cross-sectional setting, regenerating atypia was observed in 1.1% (241/22 133). H. pylori infection was associated with gastric regenerating atypia (adjusted odds ratio, 1.47; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.12-1.91). In cohort setting, 310 patients with regenerating atypia were finally eligible. Positive pathology rate during follow up was 16.1% (15/93) in the persistent infection group, 2.8% (3/106) in successful eradication group, and 4.5% (5/111) in baseline H. pylori-negative group. Persistent H. pylori infection increased the risk of positive pathology (adjusted risk ratio [RR], 7.18; 95% CI, 1.95-26.48) compared to H. pylori eradication group. Persistent H. pylori infection increased the risk of regenerative atypia (adjusted RR, 5.70; 95% CI, 1.46-22.17) and new neoplasm (adjusted RR, 10.74; 95% CI, 1.10-105.17) compared to baseline negative H. pylori. CONCLUSIONS: H. pylori infection is an independent risk factor for gastric regenerating atypia. Eradication of H. pylori seems helpful for regression of regenerating atypia.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Healing of gastric endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD)-induced ulcer is critical for patient recovery. During ESD treatment, submucosal incisions are made with an electrosurgical knife to accomplish en bloc resections of superficial lesions. Nevertheless, excess electrocoagulation may decrease the blood supply of ESD-induced ulcer and delay the ulcer healing. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the effectiveness of conservative electrocoagulation followed by porcine fibrin sealant (FS) as a wound microvessels-protective hemostatic technique in promoting the healing of ESD-induced ulcer. METHODS: A total of 332 patients with early gastric cancer (EGCs), or gastric precancerous lesion and gastric adenoma were retrospectively analyzed. Propensity score matching was used to compensate for the differences in age, gender, tumor location, resected specimen area, and pathology. One-month ulcer healing rates and delayed bleeding were compared between two matched groups (combined hemostats group and electrocautery group). RESULTS: A total of 115 matched pairs were created after propensity score matching. There was no difference in tumor location, specimen surface area, tumor differentiation and invasion depth between groups. The completed healing rate 1 month after ESD was 44.3% in combined hemostats group and 30.4% in electrocautery group (P = 0.004). There was no difference in delayed massive bleeding rate between two groups (P = 0.300). In addition, based on the multivariate regression analysis for ulcer healing rate, the use of FS (OR, 0.348, 95% CI 0.196 - 0.617, P = 0.000) and larger specimen size (OR, 2.640, 95% CI 2.015-3.458, P = 0.000) were associated with nonhealing ulcer 1 month after ESD. CONCLUSION: Applying conservative electrocoagulation followed by porcine FS as a wound microvessels-protective hemostatic technique can promote ESD-induced ulcer healing without increasing delayed bleeding.

RESUMO

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are among the most important causes of peptic ulcer disease in high-income countries. Proton pump inhibitors are the current standard treatment; however, safety and long-term adverse effects of using these drugs are attracting more and more concerns in recent years. Using a porcine model of NSAID-related gastric ulcer, we herein show that adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADMSCs) delivered by endoscopic submucosal injection promoted ulcer healing with less inflammatory infiltration and enhanced reepithelization and neovascularization at day 7 and day 21 when compared with the controls (saline injection). However, only few engrafted ADMSCs showed myofibroblast and epithelial cell phenotype in vivo, suggesting the ulcer healing process might be much less dependent on the stem cell transdifferentiation. Further experiment with submucosal injection of MSC-derived secretome revealed a therapeutic efficacy comparable to that of stem cell transplantation. Profiling analysis showed up-regulation of genes associated with inflammation, granulation formation, and extracellular matrix remodeling at day 7 after injection of MSC-derived secretome. In addition, the extracellular signal-regulated kinase/mitogen-activated protein kinase and the phosphoinositide-3-kinase/protein kinase B pathways were activated after injection of ADMSCs or MSC-derived secretome. Both signaling pathways were involved in mediating the major events critical to gastric ulcer healing, including cell survival, migration, and angiogenesis. Our data suggest that endoscopic submucosal injection of ADMSCs serves as a promising approach to promote healing of NSAID-related peptic ulcer, and the paracrine effectors released from stem cells play a crucial role in this process.

RESUMO

High-altitude stress ulcer (HSU) has constantly been a formidable clinical challenge for high-altitude and severe hypoxia. Pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMFs) have been verified to have the ability to penetrate tissues, and the biological effects have been confirmed effective on various tissue restorations. However, the therapeutic effect of PEMFs on HSU has been rarely reported. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of PEMFs on HSU healing systematically. Sprague-Dawley rats were assigned to control, HSU, and HSU+PEMF groups. The HSU models were induced by restraint stress under low-pressure hypoxia. The HSU+PEMF group was subjected to PEMF exposure. During the HSU healing, gastric juice pH values, ulcer index (UI), and histopathologic changes were investigated. Furthermore, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) was determined to analyze the severity of gastric membrane inflammations. Norepinephrine (NE), which influences gastric acid secretion, was measured. Results indicated the UI of the HSU+PEMF decreased faster than that of the HSU group. Histopathologic observation suggested that the ulcer tissue healing is faster in the HSU+PEMF group than in the HSU group. The TNF-α/total protein results revealed that the inflammation of the HSU+PEMF group is suppressed effectively. The pH values are higher in the HSU+PEMF group than in the HSU, as confirmed by NE examination. The results indicated that low-frequency PEMFs can penetrate stomach tissues to relieve the symptoms of HSU and promote the regeneration of disturbed tissues, thus implying the clinical potential of PEMF therapy for HSU treatment.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of electroacupuncture (EA) treatment on gastric mucosal lesions and the activity of corticotrophin-releasing hormone (CRH) neurons in the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) of the hypothalamus and the central nucleus of the amygdala (CNA) in a rat model of restraint water-immersion stress (RWIS). METHODS: 24 male Wistar rats were randomly divided into three groups: normal, RWIS, and RWIS+EA (n=8 per group). Rats in the RWIS group and RWIS+EA group received RWIS for 3 hours. For rats in the RWIS+EA group, EA was applied at ST36 in the bilateral hind legs for 30 min before RWIS. Rats in the normal group did not receive stressors or EA treatment. The gastric mucosal lesions of each rat were evaluated by the erosion index (EI) according to the methods of Guth. The activity of CRH neurons in the PVN and CNA was measured by a dual immunohistochemical test for Fos and CRH in the brain sections. RESULTS: RWIS induced serious gastric mucosal lesions. The mean gastric EI was significantly decreased in the RWIS+EA group versus the RWIS group (P=0.005). Stress induced significant activation of CRH neurons in the PVN and CNA compared with the normal group (P<0.001 for both). The mean number of Fos+CRH immunoreactive neurons in the PVN and CNA were both decreased inRWIS+EA versusRWIS groups (P<0.001 and P=0.001). CONCLUSIONS: EA at ST36 can ameliorate RWIS-induced gastric mucosal lesions and suppress the Fos expression of CRH neurons in the PVN and CNA, suggesting a potentially therapeutic role for EA in stress-related gastric disorders.

RESUMO

Peptic ulcer bleeding is common and associated with significant morbidity and mortality. We discuss the endoscopic assessment of peptic ulcers and the rationale for treatment. We also review the evidence for the available endoscopic therapies, both individually and in combination, to draw conclusions on the optimum endoscopic management of peptic ulcer bleeding.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIM: This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of scheduled second-look endoscopy (EGD) with endoscopic hemostasis on peptic ulcer rebleeding and to identify the risk factors related to the need for second-look EGD. METHODS: We prospectively randomized patients who had endoscopically confirmed bleeding peptic ulcer with stigmata of active bleeding, visible vessel, or adherent clot into 2 groups between August 2010 and January 2013. Hemoclip application or thermal coagulation and/or epinephrine injection were allowed for initial endoscopic therapy. The same dosage of proton pump inhibitor was injected intravenously. The study group received scheduled second-look EGD 24 to 36 hours after the initial hemostasis, and further therapy was applied if endoscopic stigmata persisted, as above. Those patients who developed rebleeding underwent operation or radiologic intervention despite the additional endoscopic therapy. Outcome measures included rebleeding, amount of transfusion, duration of hospitalization, and mortality. RESULTS: After initial endoscopic hemostasis, 319 eligible patients were randomized into 2 groups. Sixteen (10.1%) and 9 (5.6%) patients developed rebleeding (P = .132), respectively. There was also no difference in surgical intervention (0, 0% vs 1, .6%, P >.999) or radiologic intervention (3, 1.9% vs 2, 1.2%, P = .683), median duration of hospitalization (6.0 vs 5.0 days, P = .151), amount of transfusion (2.4 ± 1.7 vs 2.2 ± 1.6 units, P = .276), and mortality (2, 1.3% vs 2, 1.2%, P > .999) between the 2 groups. Multivariate analysis showed that grades 3 to 4 of endoscopists' estimation to success of initial hemostasis, history of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) use, and larger amounts of blood transfusions (≥4 units of red blood cells) were the independent risk factors of rebleeding. CONCLUSIONS: A single EGD with endoscopic hemostasis is not inferior to scheduled second-look endoscopy in terms of reduction in rebleeding rate of peptic ulcer bleeding. Repeat endoscopy would be helpful in the patients with unsatisfactory initial endoscopic hemostasis, use of NSAIDs, and larger amounts of transfused blood. RESUMO

Treatment of chronic mesenteric ischemia has evolved over the last two decades. Endovascular therapy is now the treatment of choice for patients with lesions amenable to such an approach. Open revascularization remains the standard of care but is frequently being reserved for lesions containing intraluminal thrombus or severe calcification. In most cases, celiac axis (CA) stenting is not needed since revascularization of the superior mesenteric artery (SMA) alone results in symptomatic resolution. This report describes a case of a patient with chronic mesenteric ischemia and diffuse gastric ulcers found to have a common origin of the SMA and CA that was treated endovascularly using a bifurcated stent technique.

Objective: To investigate the effect of aqueous extracts on infusion and decoction of an Ocimum micranthum Willd nutraceutic (ISHCATUL®), in a model of gastric ulcer induced by ethanol in rats. Materials and Methods: An experimental study. Twenty-five male rats were distributed in four study groups: 1) Negative Control (Saline solution 0.9% 1mL / 100 g); 2) Positive Control (Sucralfate 500 mg / Kg); 3) Experimental 1 (Decoction at a dose of 1mL / 100 g); and 4) Experimental 2 (Infusion at a dose of 2mL / 100 g). Additionally, a rat was not intervened, in order to make comparisons through direct visualization of gastric tissue. Gastric ulcer was induced by intragastric administration of 75% absolute ethanol (1 mL / 100g). A direct observation was made of macroscopic characteristics through ulcer indexes and percentages of inhibition (PoI) were calculated. Results: Experimental 1 and Experimental 2 groups obtained PoIs of 35.2% and 21.2%, respectively. However, these results were not superior than PoI obtained by group which received sucralfate (75%). Conclusion: Gastroprotective effects were found in experimental groups which received Ocimum micranthum Willd nutraceutics decoction (at 1 mL / mg) and infusion (at 2mL / mg), in experimental models of ethanol-induced ulcer gastric ulcer, which were not superior to positive controls.
