Industrial activities contribute to environmental pollution, particularly through unregulated effluent discharges, causing adverse effects on ecosystems. Vegetable oils, as insoluble substances, exacerbate this pollution, forming impermeable films and affecting the oxygen transfer, leading to serious habitat disruption. Organic wastes, such as soybean texturized waste, spent mushroom substrate, and stabilized poultry litter, were assessed for their efficacy in enhancing the degradation of vegetable oil in contaminated soil. For this purpose, contaminated soil was amended with each of the wastes (10% w/w) using microcosm systems, which were monitored physico-chemically, microbiologically and toxicologically. Results indicate that the wastes promoted significant oil degradation, achieving 83.1, 90.7, and 86.2% removal for soybean texturized waste, spent mushroom substrate, and stabilized poultry litter, respectively, within a 90-day period. Additionally, they positively influenced soil microbial activity, as evidenced by increased levels of culturable microorganisms and hydrolytic microbial activity. While bioassays indicated no phytotoxicity in most cases, soybean texturized waste exhibited inhibitory effects on seed germination and root elongation of Lactuca sativa. This study significantly enhances our comprehension of remediation techniques for sites tainted with vegetable oils, highlighting the critical role of organic waste as eco-friendly agents in soil restoration. Emphasizing the practical implications of these findings is imperative to underscore the relevance and urgency of addressing vegetable oil contamination in soil. Moving forward, tailored strategies considering both contaminant characteristics and soil ecosystem traits are vital for ensuring effective and sustainable soil remediation.

RESUMO

Calvatia is a genus of gasteroid fungi, comprising about 47 species worldwide. In this paper we report the second worldwide occurrence of two poorly known species of Calvatia, recorded in the Cerrado biome of Brazil: C. oblongispora and C. nodulata. Detailed morphological descriptions and illustrations, including scanning electron micrographs of hyphae and basidiospores are provided, as well a discussion on their taxonomy and geographic distribution.


Calvatia é um gênero de fungos gasteroides que compreende cerca de 47 espécies em todo o mundo. Neste artigo relatamos a segunda ocorrência de duas espécies pouco conhecidas de Calvatia, registradas no bioma Cerrado do Brasil: C. oblongispora e C. nodulata. Descrições morfológicas detalhadas e ilustrações são fornecidas, incluindo micrografias eletrônicas de varredura de hifas e basidiósporos, bem como uma discussão sobre sua taxonomia e distribuição geográfica.

Although the individual consumption of medicinal mushrooms, including Phellinus linteus (PL), Ganoderma lucidum (GL), and Inonotus obliquus (IO), is known to be neuroprotective, the associated mechanisms underlying their therapeutic synergism on focal cerebral ischemia (fCI) have yet to be elucidated. This study aimed to demonstrate the neuroprotective effects of mixed mushroom mycelia (MMM) against experimental fCI. The water-fractions, ethanolic-fractions, and ethyl acetate-fractions of the MMM (PL, GL, and IO) grown in a barley medium using solid-state fermentation techniques were prepared and their protective effects against glutamate-induced excitotoxicity were compared in PC-12 cells. After the identification of the water extracts of MMM (wMMM) as the most suitable form, which possessed the lowest toxicity and highest efficacy, further analyses for evaluating the anti-apoptotic effects of wMMM, including Hoechst 33258-based nuclear staining, fluorescence-activated cell sorting, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) detection assays, were performed. Rats were subjected to a 90 min middle cerebral artery occlusion and reperfusion, after which a wMMM treatment resulted in significant dose-dependent improvements across a number of parameters. Furthermore, measurements of intracellular ROS and levels of antioxidant enzymes revealed a wMMM-mediated ROS attenuation and antioxidant enzyme upregulation. We suggest that wMMM is neuroprotective against fCI through its anti-apoptotic and anti-oxidative effects.

BACKGROUND: Atrazine is one of the most widespread chlorinated herbicides, leaving large bulks in soils and groundwater. The biodegradation of atrazine by bacteria is well described, but many aspects of the fungal metabolism of this compound remain unclear. Thus, we investigated the toxicity and degradation of atrazine by 13 rainforest basidiomycete strains. RESULTS: In liquid medium, Pluteus cubensis SXS320, Gloelophyllum striatum MCA7, and Agaricales MCA17 removed 30, 37, and 38%, respectively, of initial 25 mg L- 1 of the herbicide within 20 days. Deficiency of nitrogen drove atrazine degradation by Pluteus cubensis SXS320; this strain removed 30% of atrazine within 20 days in a culture medium with 2.5 mM of N, raising three metabolites; in a medium with 25 mM of N, only 21% of initial atrazine were removed after 40 days, and two metabolites appeared in culture extracts. This is the first report of such different outcomes linked to nitrogen availability during the biodegradation of atrazine by basidiomycetes. The herbicide also induced synthesis and secretion of extracellular laccases by Datronia caperata MCA5, Pycnoporus sanguineus MCA16, and Polyporus tenuiculus MCA11. Laccase levels produced by of P. tenuiculus MCA11 were 13.3-fold superior in the contaminated medium than in control; the possible role of this enzyme on atrazine biodegradation was evaluated, considering the strong induction and the removal of 13.9% of the herbicide in vivo. Although 88% of initial laccase activity remained after 6 h, no evidence of in vitro degradation was observed, even though ABTS was present as mediator. CONCLUSIONS: This study revealed a high potential for atrazine biodegradation among tropical basidiomycete strains. Further investigations, focusing on less explored ligninolytic enzymes and cell-bound mechanisms, could enlighten key aspects of the atrazine fungal metabolism and the role of the nitrogen in the process.

Basidiomycetes can bioaccumulate high iron contents, but there are few studies on iron availability from the mycelial biomass in order to support their use as an iron-enriched fungal food. This study aimed to evaluate the in vitro iron bioaccumulation and availability in the mycelial biomass of edible and medicinal basidiomycetes grown in two distinct culture media. Lentinus crinitus, Ganoderma lucidum, Schizophyllum commune, Pleurotus ostreatus, Pleurotus eryngii, Lentinula edodes, and Agaricus subrufescens were grown in liquid culture medium of malt extract or sugarcane molasses to obtain iron-bioaccumulated mycelial biomass. P. ostreatus was the fungus that most bioaccumulated iron, followed by S. commune, and P. eryngii; they also had the highest mycelial biomass growth and iron transfer from the culture medium to the mycelial biomass. Mycelial iron availability is species-specific, regardless of the culture medium and the iron bioaccumulation capacity of the fungus in the mycelial biomass. Mycelial biomass of S. commune, followed by G. lucidum, P. ostreatus, and P. eryngii, associated with molasses culture medium, are the best choice for the production of iron-enriched mycelial biomass.

El género Cyttaria pertenece a la familia Cyttariaceae y sus especies son parásitos obligados de árboles del género Nothofagus. Se distribuye naturalmente en el hemisferio sur, encontrándose siete especies de Cyttaria presentes en nuestro país: C. berteroi, C. darwinii, C. espinosae, C. hariotii, C. hookeri, C. johowii y C. exigua, que comúnmente se conocen como "Digüeñes" y que tienen una gran importancia desde el punto de vista alimenticio, ya que han sido consumidos desde la prehistoria por pueblos originarios. En Chile se han realizado estudios sobre la taxonomía, ecología y propiedades medicinales de algunas especies del género Cyttaria y en esta revisión, se describen los caracteres macro y microscópicos e información relevante de las siete especies de este género presentes en nuestro país, de acuerdo a la literatura disponible y observaciones personales de la autora. Además, se presenta un resumen sobre los resultados de un estudio reciente de las propiedades bioactivas de las especies más consumidas en nuestro país. (AU)


The genus Cyttariabelongs to the family Cyttariaceae; its species are obligate parasites of trees of the genus Nothofagus. It is naturally distributed in the Southern Hemisphere, with seven species of Cyttariapresent in Chile: C. berteroi, C. darwinii, C. espinosae, C. hariotii, C. hookeri, C. johowiiand C. exigua, which are commonly known as "Digüeñes" and are of great nutritional importance, since they have been consumed from prehistory by native people. Studies have been carried out in Chile on the taxonomy, ecology and medicinal properties of some species of the genus Cyttaria. In this review, the macro and microscopic characteristics and relevant information of the seven species of this genus present in our country are described, according to the available literature and personal observations of the author. A summary of the results of a recent study of the bioactive properties of the most consumed species in our country is also presented. (AU)

This article presents the ecological distribution of the edible and medicinal mushroom Polyporus umbellatus in Central Europe. Our main motivation is to describe the potential for commercial cultivation of this species. All data considered in this study are based on records from 70 localities in Slovakia. Fruiting bodies and sclerotia have been recorded in forests in which beech, hornbeam, and oak dominate, at altitudes ranging from 150 to 935 m (mean altitude, 403 m). In Slovakia, these areas correspond to warm, hilly, and upland beech-oak and oak-beech forests. Mean annual air temperature between 6°C and 9°C characterizes about 94% of the areas. Continuous monitoring of fruiting body production at 13 plots showed peak growth in August. In total, 192 fruiting bodies were recorded over a 5-year period. P. umbellatus predominantly grows in acidic soils (pH 4.5-4.99), with no individuals found in soils with pH above 7.0. Our findings can be used for growing the fungus and expanding its growth to new regions, not only in Central Europe.

BACKGROUND: Edible mushrooms are an abundant source of carbohydrates, proteins, and multiple antioxidants and phytonutrients. This paper presents a general overview on the edible fungus describing the inventions made in the field of its cultivation, equipment and value-added products. OBJECTIVE: To understand and review the innovations and nutraceutical benefits of mushrooms as well as to develop interest regarding the edible mushrooms. METHODS: Information provided in this review is based on the available research investigations and patents. RESULT: Mushrooms are an edible source of a wide variety of antioxidants and phytonutrients with a number of nutraceutical properties including anti-tumor and anti-carcinogenic. Thus, several investigations are made for cultivation and improvement of the yield of mushrooms through improvisation of growth substrates and equipment used for mushroom processing. The mushroom has been processed into various products to increase its consumption, providing the health and nutritional benefit to mankind. CONCLUSION: This paper summarizes the cultivation practices of mushroom, its processing equipment, methods of preservation, value-added based products, and its nutraceutical properties. The review also highlights the various scientific feats achieved in terms of patents and research publications promoting mushroom as a wholesome food.

Ganoderma lucidum belongs to the family Ganodermataceae and found in Japan, China and some other parts of Asia. Traditionally it is used in herbal medicine as anti-diabetic, cancer prevention agent, antitumor, an immunomodulatory, antimicrobial and antiviral agent. Due to difficulty in field cultivation, submerged fermentation was employed as a promising method for efficient and large-scale production of mycelia biomass and bioactive metabolites. Cellulose was used in the form of a lignocellulosic substrate. The Ganoderma lucidum which is medicinal and edible mushrooms were successfully grown in the form of mycelial biomass in static submerged culture in Petri plates and flasks. The present study is based on the utilization of hydrolyzates of lignocellulosic materials such as Peanut cort, Sugarcane bagasse, and Wheat Straw was used after hydrolysis. A Static Fermentation Technique was employed to investigate the mycelial growth, instead of Fruiting Body. Ganoderma lucidum was kept up on PDA (potato dextrose agar) medium in Petri dishes at 4°C and brooded at 25°C for 5 days for the development of G. lucidum and generation of Ganoderic Acid. Morphology of G. lucidum on various Hydrolysates was white and delicate like cotton unpredictable shape, Cloud-like appearance spread in general plate and multiple little sporadic white cotton-like shape with string-like projections. We got a Ganoderic Acid from the Hydrolysates of Peanut cort concentrate, Sugarcane bagasse concentrate and Wheat straw concentrate at a concentration of 0.006g/L, 0.011g/L and 0.017g/L respectively.

The brown roll-rim mushroom (Paxillus involutus) quickly produces biomass in nature, although, being a mycorrhizal fungus, it is rather poorly maintained in culture. Information about its toxic properties is controversial. Until the mid-20th century, the species was considered as an edible fungus; however, data later accumulated regarding its poisonous properties, leading to the term "Paxillus syndromeP. involutus. Since mushrooms can have quite a few unidentified antigens complementary to B-lymphocyte receptors, this is a hidden danger of using unfractionated mushroom raw materials for preventive and oncotherapy purposes, and we hope that this article stimulates immunological groups worldwide to identify the "X" antigen related to the Paxillus syndrome. Oncotherapy effects of the known bioactive complexes of P. involutus are associated with a specific inhibition of some growth receptors of the cancer cell, whereas experimentation with purified substances of P. involutus and various families of growth receptors of cancer cell has good prospects. A clear speciation is fixing within the P. involutus complex. The key for identification of species of P. involutus complex is given and cultural characteristics of P. involutus strains kept at Komarov Botanical Institute Basidiomycetes Culture Collection are presented.

Two new compounds herialpins A-B (1-2), along with eleven known compounds, were isolated from the culture of fungus Hericium alpestre. The structures were elucidated by 1D and 2D NMR data, ESI-MS and X-ray crystallographic analysis. Compounds 1-2 were assayed for their cytotoxicity against three tumor cell lines compared with the known compound 3. Compounds 1 and 2 were found with modest activity, while compound 3 exhibits stronger selective inhibitory activity against A549 and HT-29 cells with IC50 values of 15.1 and 20.1 µmol/L, respectively. The pyrano[3,4-g]chromene-4,6-dione moiety in compound 3 should be responsible for the stronger selective inhibitory activity.

Polysaccharides from the fungus Inonotus obliquus have been found to be biologically active. In this study, we carried out a preliminary characterisation and assessment of the hypoglycaemic activities of the polysaccharides (IOEP) from Inonotus obliquus obtained by liquid fermentation. Two polysaccharides, IOEP1 and IOEP2, were isolated from IOEP. IOEP1, with a molecular weight of 20 KDa, was mainly composed of galatose and mannose, while IOEP2, with a molecular weight of 200 KDa, was mainly composed of arabinose. Fourier-transform infrared analysis showed that both IOEP1 and IOEP2 were pyran-type polysaccharides. ¹H-NMR spectra showed that the glycosidic bonds of IOEP1 and IOEP2 were both α-type and ß-type. In addition, IOEP1 and IOEP2 strongly increased the glucose consumption of HepG2 cells and insulin-resistant HepG2 cells in vitro. These findings provide a theoretical basis that IOEP1 and IOEP2 might be suitable as anti-diabetes agents in functional foods and natural drugs.

Spent mushroom substrate (SMS) as an organic amendment to plant production has received increasing attention on soil phytoremediation. However, organic amendments are known to contribute to greenhouse gas (GHG) emission from soils. Castor oil plant has a high biomass production and phytoremediation potential for heavy metal-contaminated soils. In the present study, the roles of SMS on phytoremediation efficiency of castor oil plant (Ricinus communis L.) from cadmium (Cd) and nickel (Ni)-contaminated soils were investigated, and the impact of SMS application on methane emission from the contaminated soil were evaluated. Pot experiments with SMS-amended and unamended contaminated soils were conducted to investigate Cd and Ni accumulation in R. communis and CH4 emission. After growing for 3 months in soils with the addition of Cd (10 mg/kg) and Ni (at rates of 200 and 600 mg/kg), the dry biomass and the concentrations of Cd and Ni in the R. communis were measured, and the mobility factors for Cd and Ni were calculated. To assess methane emission, CH4 fluxes and potential rates of CH4 production and oxidation were measured pre- and post-incubation. SMS addition significantly improved the growth of R. communis and gave 19.15~82.46% more dry weight as compared to the single plant cultivation in the contaminated soils. SMS also increased plant Cd uptake and the total amount of Cd accumulation in R. communis increased by 28.1-152.1%, respectively, in signal Cd treatment and Cd-Ni complexation treatment, as compared to the single plant cultivation. The high values of mobility factor for Cd in single plant cultivation and co-application of SMS and R. communis pointed to the potential of R. communis to the Cd mobilization from the contaminated soils. Moreover, the addition of SMS tended to stimulate CH4 uptake that the average increases in CH4 uptake rate were 3.84-fold (in controls) and 2.91-fold (in single Cd treated soils) by the co-application of SMS and R. communis as compared to the single plant cultivation. The results suggested that the application of SMS could improve the growth of R. communis in Cd and Ni-contaminated soil, enhance heavy metal bioaccumulation, and stimulate soil CH4 uptake. Therefore, SMS might be useful for enhancing phytoremediation of heavy metals and mitigate CH4 emission from the contaminated soil. In addition, results in the study implied that implementing carefully designed management strategies (e.g., application of organic residues) during contaminated soil remediation is a promising solution for agricultural waste management and soil phytoremediation.

Abstract The present study conducted a genetic characterization and determined growth rate and biomass production in solid and liquid media, using strains obtained from wild edible sporomes of Lyophyllum that grow in high mountains. Vegetative isolation was used to obtain a total of four strains, which were divided into two clades within the section Difformia: Lyophyllum sp. and Lyophyllum aff. shimeji. Growth rate and biomass production were influenced by both the culture media and the strains. In a potato dextrose agar medium, the strains presented a higher growth rate, while in a malt extract-peptone and yeast agar medium, the growth rate was lower, but with a higher biomass production that was equal to that in the malt extract-peptone and yeast liquid medium.

RESUMO

Three culinary-medicinal fungi and mushrooms (Agaricus bisporus AS2796, Helvella lacunosa X1 and Fomitiporia yanbeiensis S. Guo & L. Zhou) were individually inoculated into different cereal grains (wheat, rice, oat, corn, millet, quinoa, buckwheat, soybean, pea and sorghum) and the antioxidant properties of fungus-fermented products after solid-state fermentation (SSF) (0, 7, 14, 21, 28 and 35 days; 25°C) were studied. The results showed that the total phenol contents (TPCs) of the fermented cereals varied with fermentation time and the starter organisms. According to the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging capacity, reducing power, ferrous ion chelating ability and superoxide anion radical scavenging ability of ethanolic extracts from the fungus-fermented products (35 days), it was shown that the antioxidant properties of all the products were significantly stronger than uninoculated grains. It revealed that SSF on cereal grains by dietary fungi is a biotechnological strategy, which may enhance the antioxidant properties of the substrate. The three medicinal mushroom and fungi-fermented products were relatively effective in the antioxidant properties assayed and might be potential antioxidants for application in food products.

This article presents data from morphological observations of mycelia of 40 monokaryotic and 11 dikaryotic collections of 3 medicinal Coprinellus species (C. disseminatus, C. micaceus, and C. xanthothrix). The growth rate, colony morphology, and micromorphological characteristics of mycelia and anamorphs on 1.5% malt-extract agar (MEA) and potato-dextrose agar (PDA) are described. Well-developed white, cottony-felt colonies, which later show creamy, yellowish to rusty brown pigmentation on mycelia and agar, were typical for the studied Coprinellus collections. Mycelial growth was denser on PDA than on MEA, whereas the average growth rate indicators (GRavr) were higher in dikaryotic isolates on MEA. Clamp connections were described only in dikaryotic isolates of C. disseminatus and C. micaceus; mycelia of C. xanthothrix had no clamps. Nonsporulating Ozonium-type anamorphic mycelia (with a rusty brown septate and parallel hyphal strands), a taxonomic feature characteristic of the clade Coprinellus, was present in the studied monokaryotic and dikaryotic collections, whereas Hormographiella-type sporulating anamorphs developed only in monokaryotic and dikaryotic isolates of C. xanthothrix. Yellowish-rusty-brownish regular hyphal loops were also observed in the collections of all 3 Coprinellus species. Allocyst-like hyphal swellings were observed in monokaryons of C. xanthothrix, and hyphocystidia were observed in dikaryons of C. micaceus. Hyphal loops and hyphal cystidia presumably were derived from Ozonium mycelia. Thick-walled, oval chlamydospores and chlamydospore-like swellings were described only in dikaryons of C. xanthothrix. Under these experimental conditions, primordia and fruiting bodies developed in dikaryons of C. xanthothrix on MEA and PDA, respectively, and in dikaryons of C. micaceus on MEA. The taxonomic significance of the mycelial and anamorphic characteristics of studied Coprinellus species was evaluated. They could be useful for identifying mycelial cultures during biotechnological cultivation.

Taiwanofungus camphoratus has been reported to have antitumor effects against various cancer cells. The aim of this study was to investigate the direct inhibitory effect of By-1 (3-isobutyl-l-methoxy-4-[4'-(3-methylbut-2-enyloxy)phenyl]-1H-pyrrole-2,5-dione), a compound from spent broth from submerged cultures of T. camphoratus, on human lung adenocarcinoma cells and to determine the molecular mechanism underlying this effect. The growth-inhibitory assay and colony formation assay showed that cell viability was significantly decreased. A By-1 concentration of 300 µmol/L caused 73.55% cell death and at a concentration of 240 µmol/L led to a 58% reduction in the number of colonies. The wound-healing assay showed that the distance of migration was 0.3 times shorter than that of untreated cells. Flow cytometry revealed that By-1 could suppress DNA synthesis, cause cell cycle arrest at the S phase, and induce apoptosis in a reactive oxygen species-dependent manner. Furthermore, the expression of caspase-3 and P53 was 4 times higher than that in untreated cells, and the antiapoptotic protein Bcl-2 was decreased 2 times compared with the protein in untreated cells. It is interesting to note that apoptosis and autophagy were both induced during treatment with By-1, and autophagy inhibition decreased cell proliferation. By-1 potently inhibited the growth of SPCA-1 cells by inducing cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. The combination of proapoptosis agents and antiautophagy agents could effectively enhance anticancer efficacy, which may be a new strategy in treating non-small cell lung cancer.

Mushroom cultivation has become an important component of agriculture, providing food and contributing to the global economy. It uses vertical space and addresses issues of food quality, health improvement, and environmental sustainability. Auricularia mushrooms are popular ingredients in traditional Chinese cuisine. The objective of this study was to determine yield and evaluate radical scavenging capacity of A. polytricha cultivated on rubberwood sawdust on a large scale; we measured total phenolic content; DPPH, hydroxyl, superoxide anion, and peroxyl radical scavenging; and reducing power. Cultivation on rubberwood sawdust produces an average of 4 harvests per bag and a biological efficiency of 80-82%. The antioxidant capacity investigations revealed that the ethyl acetate fraction was the most potent radical scavenger in all assays except that for superoxide anions, whereas the aqueous fraction exhibited mild to moderate antioxidant capacity in scavenging the various radicals. Artificial cultivation of A. polytricha on rubberwood sawdust yields many sporophores with potent antioxidant capacity.

Calocybe indica was cultivated on wheat straw enriched with various concentrations of sodium selenite (Na2SeO3), (2.5-40 µg/ml). The content of selenium (Se) in fruit bodies increased linearly by increasing the amount of Na2SeO3, although the biomass yield inhibited above 5 µg/ml. The fruit bodies accumulated inorganic Se into organic forms by integrating the Se into proteins (56%-68%), polysaccharides (22%-29%), and nucleic acids (1.4%-2.7%). Maximum protein content (25.31 g/100 g) was observed in fruit bodies harvested from the substrate enriched with 10 µg/ml Se. Amino acid profiling revealed the highest value of glutamic acid (4.73 g/100 g), followed by aspartic acid (1.80 g/100 g), and glycine (1.61 g/100 g) at 10 µg/ml. The Se enrichment also enhanced the total phenol, free radical 2,2-dipheynl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging activity and ferric reducing power (FRAP) of methanolic extracts of fruiting bodies to almost double of their contents. The principle component analysis (PCA) illustrated close correlations amongst the biomass yield, polyphenols, and antioxidant activities at 5 µg/ml concentrations of the Se.

Inocybe sindonia (Fr.) P. Karst. y Amanita rubescens Pers. son especies típicamente asociadas a bosques de Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco y Pinus radiata D. Don respectivamente. Se reporta por primera vez su presencia en Argentina en bosques de Nothofagus de la Patagonia andina como resultado de la invasión de especies forestales introducidas como recurso maderero. I. sindonia fue colectado en bosques de N. dombeyi (Mirb.) Oerst. y A. rubescens en bosques de N. pumilio (Poepp. & Endl.) Krasser en áreas protegidas con invasión evidente de coníferas exóticas.


Inocybe sindonia (Fr.) P. Karst. and Amanita rubescens Pers. are species typically associated to Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco and Pinus radiata D. Don respectively. Both species have been introduced in South America together with timber species plantations. Basidiomes of I. sindonia were found occurring under Nothofagus dombeyi (Mirb.) Oerst., while basidiomes of A. rubescens were found under N. pumilio (Poepp. & Endl.) Krasser in protected areas that are under invasion of exotic conifers.
