RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Subjective hearing loss (SHL) refers to an individual's self-assessment of their hearing loss. The association and underlying mechanisms between SHL and cognitive impairment still necessitate elucidation. OBJECTIVES: To validate potential mechanisms between SHL and cognitive impairment. DESIGN: Cross-section. SETTING: Shanghai, China. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 2369 individuals from communities and the cognitive disorder clinic. MEASUREMENTS: All participants were subjected to a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment, encompassing the Hearing Handicap Inventory for the Elderly-Screening Version (HHIE-S). The participants' brain ß-amyloid (Aß) deposition status, plasma biomarkers associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD), and cardiovascular risk factors were also collected. RESULTS: In individuals with a heightened SHL, elevated HHIE-S score was linked to diminished cognitive and daily functioning as well as heightened levels of depressed mood. This correlation was observed in auditory memory performance but not in visual memory. The influence of SHL on cognitive function was mediated by depressed mood. SHL was associated with diabetes and smoking, whereas cognitive function was associated with hyperlipidemia and alcohol consumption. In individuals with positive brain Aß deposition, SHL demonstrated associations with cognitive function independent of plasma Aß42/40 ratio, P-tau181, neurofilament light chain, and APOE allele status. CONCLUSION: SHL has an independent effect on cognitive impairment. The findings do no provide evidence for the common cause mechanism. Instead, the findings support the presence of a cognitive resource mechanism and an impoverished environment mechanism, along with the potential for a pathological interaction mechanism.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Self-rated health (SRH) has been identified in many studies as a valid predictor of mortality and healthcare utilization. There is limited research on SRH and dietary intake. This study aimed to investigate the association between healthy eating index (HEI) and SRH in adults living in Tehran. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was carried out among 850 adult men and women aged 20-59 years who visited health centers in Tehran from 2021 to 2022. Dietary intake was assessed using a validated and reliable semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire with 168 food items, and SRH was assessed with one question: "In general, how do you rate your health?". We categorized SRH into excellent/very good, good, and fair/poor. In the descriptive statistics part, we used mean ± standard deviation or number (ratio) for quantitative and qualitative variables, respectively. The chi-squared test and one-way analysis of variance were used to calculate the percentage and mean for demographic characteristics across tertiles of SRH. An analysis of covariance was used to compare the means of energy, macronutrients, the HEI, and its component variables across the tertiles of SRH. RESULTS: The final sample included 795 participants (68.2% female; mean ± standard deviation age: 44.81 ± 10.62 years) whose 40% reported excellent/very good SRH, and 30% reported good and fair/poor SRH separately. There was no association between body mass index, physical activity, education, health status, smoking, and sleep duration with SRH. After adjustment, the total HEI score and its component scores did not differ across the tertiles of SRH status. However, participants with good SRH had a higher intake of total energy (mean difference (MD): 180.33 Kcal, P value < 0.001), total fat (MD: 8.15 gr, P value = 0.002), and total carbohydrates (MD: 20.18 gr, P value = 0.004) than those with fair/poor SRH. CONCLUSION: According to our findings, fair/poor SRH was associated with a lower consumption of total energy, total fat, and total carbohydrates in Iranian adults. Additional observational studies would be necessary to clarify these findings.

RESUMO

Importance: Optimal strategies for increasing cervical cancer screening may differ by patient screening history and health care setting. Mailing human papillomavirus (HPV) self-sampling kits to individuals who are overdue for screening increases adherence; however, offering self-sampling kits to screening-adherent individuals has not been evaluated in the US. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of direct-mail and opt-in approaches for offering HPV self-sampling kits to individuals by cervical cancer screening history (screening-adherent and currently due, overdue, or unknown). Design, Setting, and Participants: Randomized clinical trial conducted in Kaiser Permanente Washington, a US integrated health care delivery system. Individuals aged 30 to 64 years with female sex, a primary care clinician, and no hysterectomy were identified through electronic health records (EHRs) and enrolled between November 20, 2020, and January 28, 2022, with follow-up through July 29, 2022. Interventions: Individuals stratified as due (eg, at the time of randomization, these individuals have been previously screened and are due for their next screening in ≤3 months) were randomized to receive usual care (patient reminders and clinician EHR alerts [n = 3671]), education (usual care plus educational materials about screening [n = 3960]), direct mail (usual care plus educational materials and a mailed self-sampling kit [n = 1482]), or to opt in (usual care plus educational materials and the option to request a kit [n = 3956]). Individuals who were overdue for screening were randomized to receive usual care (n = 5488), education (n = 1408), or direct mail (n = 1415). Individuals with unknown history for screening were randomized to receive usual care (n = 2983), education (n = 3486), or to opt in (n = 3506). Main Outcomes and Measures: The primary outcome was screening completion within 6 months. Primary analyses compared direct-mail or opt-in participants with individuals randomized to the education group. Results: The intention-to-treat analyses included 31 355 randomized individuals (mean [SD] age, 45.9 [10.4] years). Among those who were due for screening, compared with receiving education alone (1885 [47.6%]), screening completion was 14.1% (95% CI, 11.2%-16.9%) higher in the direct-mail group (914 [61.7%]) and 3.5% (95% CI, 1.2%-5.7%) higher in the opt-in group (2020 [51.1%]). Among individuals who were overdue, screening completion was 16.9% (95% CI, 13.8%-20.0%) higher in the direct-mail group (505 [35.7%]) compared with education alone (264 [18.8%]). Among those with unknown history, screening was 2.2% (95% CI, 0.5%-3.9%) higher in the opt-in group (634 [18.1%]) compared with education alone (555 [15.9%]). Conclusions and Relevance: Within a US health care system, direct-mail self-sampling increased cervical cancer screening by more than 14% in individuals who were due or overdue for cervical cancer screening. The opt-in approach minimally increased screening. To increase screening adherence, systems implementing HPV self-sampling should prioritize direct-mail outreach for individuals who are due or overdue for screening. For individuals with unknown screening history, testing alternative outreach approaches and additional efforts to document screening history are warranted. RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Occupational injuries and diseases are life events that significantly impact an individuals' identity. In this study, we examined the trajectories of self-esteem among victims of occupational injury and disease and their relation to health. METHODS: The Panel Study of Workers' Compensation Insurance conducted annual follow-ups on workers who had experienced occupational injury or disease. A total of 2,000 participants, who had completed medical care, were followed from 2013 to 2017. Growth mixture modeling was utilized to identify latent classes in the self-esteem trajectory. Additionally, logistic regressions were conducted to explore the association between trajectory membership, baseline predictors, and outcomes. RESULTS: Three distinct trajectory classes were identified. Total 65.8% of the samples (n = 1,316) followed an increasing self-esteem trajectory, while 31.1% (n = 623) exhibited a constant trajectory, and 3.1% (n = 61) showed a decreasing trajectory. Individuals with an increasing trajectory were more likely to have a higher educational attainment (odds ratio [OR], 1.86; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.20-2.88), an absence of a moderate-to-severe disability rating (OR, 0.49; 95% CI, 0.25-0.96), no difficulty in daily living activities (OR, 0.81; 95% CI, 0.75-0.88), and were economically active (re-employed: OR, 2.46; 95% CI, 1.52-3.98; returned to original work: OR, 4.46; 9% CI, 2.65-7.50). Those with a decreasing self-esteem trajectory exhibited an increased risk of poor subjective health (OR, 1.89; 95% CI, 0.85-4.85 in 2013 to OR, 3.17; 95% CI, 1.04-13.81 in 2017), whereas individuals with an increasing trajectory showed a decreased risk (OR, 0.54; 95% CI, 0.43-0.68 in 2013 to OR, 0.44; 95% CI, 0.33-0.57 in 2017). CONCLUSION: Our findings emphasize the diversity of psychological responses to occupational injury or disease. Policymakers should implement interventions to enhance the self-esteem of victims.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The intrinsic damage and external hazards of smoking are major risk factors for poorer health and are recognized as a global health issue of concern in geriatric health. This study aims to assess the Dunning-Kruger effect through the influence of subjective health perceptions on smoking behavior in older adults. METHODS: This study used data from the 2018 Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (N = 9,683) provided by the Center for Healthy Aging and Development Studies at Peking University. A binary logistic model was used to examine whether the Dunning-Kruger effect affects smoking behavior in older adults, and a linear probability model was used as a commentary baseline model for logistic regression to prevent measurement bias. In addition, a mediating analysis was used to examine the mechanisms through which the Dunning-Kruger effect occurs. RESULTS: Older adults often overestimated their current health status and underestimated the health risks of smoking, causing the Dunning-Kruger effect to arise from their inadequate self-perceived health (i.e., older adults are more likely to smoke when they have better self-rated health or when hypertension, cardiopathy, stroke, and diabetes have little or no impact on their daily lives). These observations can be explained by the older adults' subjective health perceptions arising from their ingenuous understanding of their health, which indirectly influences their smoking behavior to some extent. CONCLUSION: Older adults' self-perceived health was associated with smoking behavior. Public health institutions should improve older adults' health perceptions so that they objectively understand their own health status.

Aim: To identify the concordance between self-reported oral health problems during and after COVID-19 and clinical conditions of patients in the city of Palhoça-SC. Materials and Method: Exploratory, cross-sectional study with a descriptive quantitative base, formatted by 30 patients who tested positive for COVID-19 in the municipality of Palhoça-SC. Each patient participated in a clinical evaluation, identifying oral health problems. At the same time, sociodemographic data and self-reported oral conditions were recorded. All analyzes were performed using the Stata® Software, version 13. Descriptive and inferential analyzes were performed using Pearson's chi-square test (α=5%). Agreement between the presence of self-reported oral health problems and the presence of the clinically evaluated disease, by the Kappa coefficient and classified as: weak 0 to 0.20; take 0.21 to 0.40; reasonable 0.41 to 0.60; good 0.61 to 0.80; very good 0.81 to 0.92; and excellent 0.93 to 1.00. Results: Most of the sample were women (70%), aged between 36-59 years (56.6%) and low-income (70%). There was good agreement between the presence of caries and reported pain (Kappa=0.70), and for the clinical diagnosis of gingival bleeding and bad/very poor self-perception, the classification was also good (Kappa=0.72). However, the agreement between the report of symptoms of dry mouth and low salivary flow was considered reasonable (Kappa=0.57), as well as the presence of periodontal pockets and the report of poor/terrible self-perception (Kappa=0.41). Conclusion: The self-perception of oral health conditions during the pandemic was consistent with certain clinical conditions that require dental care, corroborating concerns about the worsening of oral conditions during the pandemic.(AU)

Conclusão: Os resultados mostram as dificuldades de linguagem e de funcionalidade na percepção das próprias pessoas com DP, conferindo um caráter original à pesquisa por dar voz a elas e trazer subsídios para o cuidado centrado na pessoa, transpondo, assim, a visão biomédica da atenção centrada na doença. ntroduction: Aging and the presence of chronic diseases such as Parkinson's Disease (PD) can generate disability and affect a person's life, and the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF), from a biopsychosocial perspective, allows studying the functioning in PD. Objective: To investigate the functioning of people with PD in a speech-language pathology (SLP) group, taking the ICF as a conceptual basis. Method: Cross-sectional study, approved by the Ethics Committee, with 10 participants with PD, in SLP group. An interview script was developed to collect the sociodemographic profile and a self-administered questionnaire to collect self- perception in the ICF categories in interviews with participants in three videotaped group meetings, lasting 35 minutes each. To establish a reference parameter, two SLP with experience in the ICF (judges) classified the answers in the same categories. Results: Participants reported impairments in Body Functions (voice, articulation, fluency and rhythm of speech, involuntary movements), difficulties in Activities and Participation (speech, conversation, fine use of the hand, walking, dressing, performing household chores, and recreation and leisure) and barriers in Environmental Factors. In 60% of the cases, the agreement between participants and judges was slight, 30% regular, and in one case (10%) it was strong. Conclusion: The results showed language and functioning difficulties in the perception of people with PD, giving an original character to the research by giving them a voice and bringing subsidies to person-centered care, thus transposing the biomedical view of disease-centered care. RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The development of nursing interns' fundamental competencies should be a top focus because they represent an essential reserve for nursing professionals. The objective of this study is to investigate the relationship between spiritual care-giving competency (SCG) and nursing core competencies (NCC) among Chinese nursing interns, adopting a competency-based education (CBE) perspective, additionally, the study aims to examine how emotional intelligence (EI) serves as a mediator in this relationship. METHODS: A nationwide online survey was completed by 1811 Chinese nursing interns at vocational colleges between June and July 2022 as part of a multi-site, cross-sectional, web-based study. Participants completed a demographic questionnaire and competencies inventory for the registered nurse questionnaire (CIRN), the Chinese version of the spiritual care-giving scale questionnaire (C-SCGS), and the Chinese version of the Wong and Law EI scale questionnaire (WLEIS-C). Means, standard deviations, t-tests, one-way ANOVA analysis, and Pearson's production correlation coefficients were calculated using IBM SPSS25.0 software. Mediated effect tests and studies utilizing the process plug-in SPSS developed by Hayes. RESULTS: The NCCs of college nursing interns were related to whether working as student leaders, whether have a better self-learning evaluation level, whether a college nursing intern with good interpersonal relationship, and whether they intend to engage in the nursing profession in the future. The scores of NCC, EI, and SCG were (156.43±23.14), (61.55±9.10), and (167.64±20.52) respectively. There were positive correlations among SCG (r = 0.402), EI (r = 0.506), and NCC. The partial mediating effect of EI between SCG and NCC was 0.127, accounting for 36.29% of the total results. CONCLUSION: The average levels of Chinese college nursing interns' NCC and SCG were at a moderate level. EI is mediating between SCG and NCC in Chinese nursing interns. This new perspective shows that developing and improving SCG and EI may improve NCC. We suggest modifying the nurse curriculum and instruction to strengthen NCC and integrating SCG and EI management into the nursing curriculum.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study aims to investigate the association between domain-specific physical activity (PA), sedentary behavior, subjective health perception, and health-related quality of life (HR-QoL) in Korean adults aged ≥ 65 years. METHODS: This cross-sectional study analyzed 6,004 older adults from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2017-2020. PA and sedentary behavior were measured using a global PA questionnaire, and HR-QoL was assessed using the EuroQol-5 Dimension (EQ-5D, three-level version). Multiple logistic regression was used to estimate the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) after adjusting for confounding parameters. RESULTS: Older adults who were physically active at work showed a negative association with subjectively good health and HR-QoL, whereas those physically active in transport or leisure time showed a positive association with subjectively good health and HR-QoL. Older adults highly engaged in sedentary behavior showed a worse perception of health and HR-QoL. Compared to high sedentary behavior and physical activity during leisure time or transport, the EQ-5D index was higher than that of their counterparts. CONCLUSION: Both domain-specific PA and sedentary behavior were significantly associated with older adults' perception of health and HR-QoL. Interventions are needed to improve HR-QoL by reducing sedentary behavior and encouraging physical activity in transportation or leisure time among adults aged 65 years and above.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: The importance of evaluating the self-esteem and quality of life of patients with a chronic disease has become increasingly relevant. The study describes self-esteem and quality of life outcomes in patients with neurogenic dysfunction and continent urinary diversions and/or antegrade enema procedures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cross-sectional observational study, including patients with neurogenic dysfunction who required a continent urinary diversion and/or an antegrade enema conduit during their treatment. The self-esteem evaluation was done with the Rosenberg scale and the quality of life with the KIDSCREEN-27 questionnaire. VARIABLES MEASURED: socio-demographic, clinical and economic characteristics. Descriptive statistics were applied. RESULTS: The mean age of the 9 patients was 15.6 years, the mean time elapsed from surgery to application of the questionnaires was 60.9 ±â€¯37.1 months. With a perception of improvement in 8 of the 9 patients and a normal or higher self-esteem score in all cases. In the description of physical activity and health, it was found that 7 of the 9 young people presented a perception of good health in general. A considerable reduction in the use of diapers was achieved after the intervention, going from consuming 6.2 ±â€¯1.4 diapers per day to only 1.7 ±â€¯1.3 diapers per day. CONCLUSIONS: Despite the sequelae, comorbidities and procedures, the results of self-esteem and quality of life in patients with neurogenic dysfunction are high.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The Self-Evaluation of Communication Experiences after Laryngectomy (SECEL) is a 35-item patient-reported questionnaire developed to address the communication needs of patients with laryngectomies. The aim was to translate, cross-culturally adapt, and validate the Croatian version. METHODS: The SECEL was translated from English by two independent translators and back-translated by a native speaker, after which it was approved by an expert committee. The Croatian version of the Self-Evaluation of Communication Experiences after Laryngectomy questionnaire (SECEL:HR) was filled in by 50 laryngectomised patients who had completed their oncological treatment a year prior to inclusion in the study. Patients also filled in the Voice Handicap Index (VHI) and the Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) on the same day. All patients completed the SECEL:HR twice, the second time being 2 weeks after the initial test. Maximum phonation time and diadochokinesis of articulation organs were used for objective assessment. RESULTS: Among the Croatian patients, the questionnaire was well-accepted and demonstrated good test-retest reliability and internal consistency for two out of three subscales. The correlations between VHI, SF-36, and SECEL:HR were moderate to strong. There were no significant differences between patients who are using oesophageal speech, tracheoesophageal speech, or the electrolarynx based on the SECEL:HR. CONCLUSION: Preliminary findings of the research indicate that the Croatian version of the SECEL has sufficient psychometric qualities, high reliability, and good internal consistency, with a Cronbach's alpha of 0.89 for the total score. The Croatian version of SECEL can be recommended as a reliable and clinically valid measure for the assessment of substitution voices in Croatian-speaking patients.

RESUMO

Background: Oral nicotine pouches (NPs) are smokeless, tobacco-free products that have a potential role in tobacco harm reduction strategies. Methods: In a cross-sectional study in Sweden/Denmark, several recognised biomarkers of potential harm (BoPHs) linked to smoking-related diseases/their initiating biological processes, and biomarkers of exposure (BoEs) to tobacco/tobacco smoke toxicants were compared among exclusive adult users of Velo NPs and current/former/never smokers. Over 24 h, participants used their usual product (Velo NP or cigarette) as normal, and BoEs/BoPHs were assessed via blood/24-h urine/exhaled breath/physiological assessments. Results: Among the primary endpoints, total NNAL (16.9 ± 29.47 vs 187.4 ± 228.93 pg/24 h), white blood cell count (5.59 ± 1.223 vs 6.90 ± 1.758 × 109/L), and COHb (4.36 ± 0.525 vs 8.03 ± 2.173% saturation) were significantly lower among Velo users than among smokers (91%, 19% and 46% lower, respectively, all P < 0.0001), while fractional exhaled NO, previously shown to be lower in smokers, was significantly higher (23.18 ± 17.909 vs 11.20 ± 6.980 ppb) among Velo users (107% higher, P < 0.0001). Furthermore, sICAM-1 tended to be lower (185.9 ± 42.88 vs 204.5 ± 64.85 ng/mL) among Velo users than smokers (9% lower). Several secondary endpoints, including six BoEs (3-HPMA (246.7 ± 91.07 vs 1165.7 ± 718.35 µg/24 h), 3-OH-B[a]P (82.4 ± 217.58 vs 258.3 ± 190.20 pg/24 h), HMPMA (135.1 ± 77.85 vs 368.8 ± 183.15 µg/24 h), MHBMA (0.22 ± 0.166 vs 3.39 ± 2.943 µg/24 h), S-PMA (0.10 ± 0.059 vs 3.53 ± 2.736 µg/24 h) and total NNN (7.5 ± 24.84 vs 9.7 ± 5.93 ng/24 h)), were significantly lower among Velo users (78.8%, 68.1%, 63.4%, 93.5%, 97.2% and 22.7% lower, respectively, P < 0.0001-0.0011), while total nicotine equivalents was significantly higher among Velo users (22.6 ± 12.69 vs 12.1 ± 7.92 mg/24 h, P < 0.0001), although Velo user levels are comparable to those previously reported among oral tobacco users, and Velo user and smoker mean levels were similar in Denmark. Conclusion: As compared with smokers, exclusive users of Velo NPs have significantly less exposure to tobacco toxicants and more favourable BoPHs associated with initiating biological processes of smoking-related diseases.International Standard Registered Clinical Trial number: ISRCTN16988167.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The current study explores non-linear effects of absolute risk and effects of comparative risk information about skin cancer on individuals' safety ratings, affective responses and behavioral intentions. METHOD: An experimental survey was conducted among college students (N = 563) to test the effects of absolute and comparative risk information across a range of risk levels from 3.7% to 60%. RESULTS: The non-linear model of absolute risk effect was confirmed by the data. Absolute risk information had detectable effects at low levels of risk, but the effects did not change appreciably at the highest absolute risk levels. Regarding comparative risk, the data did not support its effects on individuals' safety ratings, affective responses and behavioral intentions. CONCLUSION: The study found the non-linear model fits well to the skin cancer related feelings and behavioral intentions. It suggests future research apply non-linear models to a variety of health communication areas.

Due to the vocal load to which voice professionals such as teachers are exposed, voice disorders and vocal misuse are frequently found in this group. This makes it necessary to have quick and simple assessment instruments that allow early detection of vocal symptoms. The objective of this study was to adapt the "Vocal Tract Discomfort Scale (VTD)" to Chilean Spanish and carry out a preliminary validation of this protocol on teachers. First, the original instrument was translated toSpanish by two native speakers, and then back-translated by two English experts, in order to determine the presence of agreements and discrepancies. Subsequently, a group of experts made up of two methodologists and five speech therapists with experience in the voice field performed an appearance and content validation. Criterion validity was obtained through the correlation between the Vocal Tract Discomfort Scale and the Spanish-validated version of the Voice Handicap Index as a gold-standard test, for which the first was appliedto a sample of 31 teachers. The validation of the VTD scale is reliable and provides speech therapists with a simple and understandable tool that allows them to comprehend the impact of dysphonia on people, particularly on voice professionals such as teachers.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE To estimate the association between negative self-perception of hearing and depression in older adults in Southern Brazil. METHODS This is a cross-sectional study conducted with data from the third wave of the EpiFloripa Idoso 2017/19 study, a population-based cohort of older adults (60+). A total of 1,335 older adults participated in this wave. The dependent variable was self-reported depression, and the main exposure was self-perception of hearing (negative; positive). For both the crude (bivariate) and adjusted analysis, the odds ratio (OR) was used as a measure of association and estimated by means of binary logistic regression analysis. The exposure variable was adjusted by sociodemographic and health covariates. A p value < 0.05 was adopted as statistically significant. RESULTS The prevalence of negative self-perception of hearing and depression was 26.0% and 21.8%, respectively. In the adjusted analysis, the older adults with negative self-perception of hearing were 1.96 times more likely to report depression when compared to the ones with positive self-perception of hearing (p = 0.002). CONCLUSION The association between negative self-perception of hearing and depression reflects the importance of reviewing health care actions for older adults, incorporating hearing-related issues, to ensure comprehensive care for this growing segment of the population.

Participaram desta onda 1.335 idosos.

Abstract Objective to investigate self-perception of oral conditions and associated factors in rural quilombola older people in northern Minas Gerais, Brazil. Method This is an analytical and cross-sectional population-based study, in which cluster sampling with probability proportional to size (n=406) was used. Data collection involved conducting interviews and clinical dental examinations. Self-perception of oral conditions was assessed using the GOHAI (Geriatric Oral Health Determination Index). Results Most older people self-perceived oral health as excellent (46.3%) or regular (30.2%). Those surveyed also revealed precarious oral health and restricted access to dental services. In the multiple analysis, significant associations (p˂0.05) were found between regular GOHAI and variables related to the location of the last consultation and use of prosthesis, as well as between poor GOHAI and variables related to marital status, religion, reason for last consultation, CPO-D index and use of prosthesis. Conclusion A significant portion of the quilombola older people showed a more positive self-assessment of oral health, which differs from the professionally verified dental condition. It was also found that the report of poor perception of oral conditions was strongly associated with poorer oral health among those investigated.

RESUMO

This scoping review aims to identify and map the existing literature regarding the relationship between neuroticism and self-reported health in community-dwelling older adults. We adopted the Joanna Briggs Institute Manual for Evidence Synthesis recommendations and followed the PRISMA-SCr when reporting it. The search was performed on ten different databases, including: Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Cochrane, Embase, PsycArticles, PsycInfo, United States National Library of Medicine, Scopus, Web of Science, Ageline and Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde/Centro Latino-Americano e do Caribe de Informação em Ciências da Saúde databases until February 2021. Data screening and extraction were performed by two independent reviewers. We included primary studies with older adults (≥60 years) [participants] that adopted validated instruments to assess neuroticism and self-reported health [concept] in the community [context], published in Portuguese, English, or Spanish. We identified 3453 articles and included 15 studies in this review. We extracted the main categories of included studies, characteristics of the participants, methodological issues, and biopsychosocial factors. Outcomes were reported in three sections: Focus of studies; Definitions and measures of neuroticism and self-reported health; Associations with biopsychosocial factors. We found an association between high neuroticism and poor self-reported health. Some biopsychosocial factors may influence this relationship, such as chronic diseases, depression, social support, and a sense of control, which must be considered in future studies to shed light on this topic

Adotamos as recomendações do Joanna Briggs Institute Manual for Evidence Synthesis e seguimos o PRISMA-SCr ao reportá-lo.

ABSTRACT Objective: To determine the effects of orthognathic surgery on oral function and vocal quality in order to assess the need for speech therapy after surgery. Material and Methods: Thirty-seven patients scheduled for mono-jaw surgery, specifically maxillary (G1:15 patients), mandibular advancement (G2:10 patients) or mandibular set-back (G3:12 patients), were recruited for this prospective cohort study. Evaluation of oral functions, video recordings of speech articulation and audio recordings of voice were obtained before surgery (T0), and at 1 (T1) and 6 months (T2) after surgery. Spectrographic analysis and self-evaluation questionnaire regarding the vocal performance (VAPP) were performed. Both qualitative and quantitative statistical analysis was performed, mainly using generalized linear models for dichotomous data (p<0.05). Results: The formant frequencies (F1 and F2) of the main vowels vary after orthognathic surgery according to the type of surgery. Before surgery, 84% of patients analyzed showed difficulties in breathing and positioning the tongue both at rest and swallowing. Thanks to surgical correction of the malocclusion, the major part of these issues were resolved within 6 months. In 25% of cases, a change in the voice and/or articulation had occurred. Conclusion: Vocality improves after orthognathic surgery and it changes in relation to the type of surgery. However, vocality did not normalize completely. Speech assessment should be considered after surgery in order to offer adequate speech therapy if necessary.
