RESUMO

In this study, sodium pentaborate pentahydrate (NaB) and Hypericum perforatum (HP) oil were incorporated into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and chitosan (CH) polymer blend to obtain membranes by solution casting method. In order to see the synergistic effects of NaB and HP oil on the biological and physical properties of the membranes NaB and HP oil were incorporated into membrane matrix in different ratios. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) results showed that no significant bond formation between the bioactive components and the PVA:CH matrix. According to mechanical test results, Young's Modulus and elongation at break decreased from 426 MPa to 346 MPa and 52.23 % to 15.11 % for neat PVA:CH membranes and NaB and HP oil incorporated PVA:CH (PVA:CH@35NaB:HP) membranes, respectively. Antimicrobial activity tests have shown the membranes were over 99 % effective against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans, underlining their potential for infection control. Cytocompatibility assay performed with Human Dermal Fibroblast (HDFa) cells highlight the biocompatibility of the membranes, revealing 74.84 % cell viability after 72 h. The properties of NaB and HP oil doped PVA:CH based membranes obtained from these experiments reveal the promise of a versatile membrane for applications in wound healing, tissue engineering and other biomedical fields.

Preventing bacterial infections is a crucial aspect of wound healing. There is an urgent need for multifunctional biomaterials without antibiotics to promote wound healing. In this study, we fabricated a guar gum (GG)-based nanocomposite hydrogel, termed GBTF, which exhibited photothermal antibacterial therapy for infected wound healing. The GBTF hydrogel formed a cross-linked network through dynamic borate/diol interactions between GG and borax, thereby exhibiting simultaneously self-healing, adaptable, and injectable properties. Additionally, tannic acid (TA)/Fe3+ nanocomplexes (NCs) were incorporated into the hydrogel to confer photothermal antibacterial properties. Under the irradiation of an 808 nm near-infrared laser, the TA/Fe3+ NCs in the hydrogel could rapidly generate heat, leading to the disruption of bacterial cell membranes and subsequent bacterial eradication. Furthermore, the hydrogels exhibited good cytocompatibility and hemocompatibility, making them a precandidate for preclinical and clinical applications. Finally, they could significantly promote bacteria-infected wound healing by reducing bacterial viability, accelerating collagen deposition, and promoting epithelial remodeling. Therefore, the multifunctional GBTF hydrogel, which was composed entirely of natural substances including guar gum, borax, and polyphenol/ferric ion NCs, showed great potential for regenerating infected skin wounds in clinical applications.

In the present work, glass samples in the (100 - x)B2O3-xLi2O binary system, with x varying from 30 to 50 mol%, were prepared using the conventional melting and moulding method, with the main objective of evaluating the thermoluminescence response when exposing these materials to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Complementary analysis based on density, optical absorption on the UV-visible region (UV-vis absorbance), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy on the medium region, X-ray diffraction, and differential thermal analysis measurements were performed. Thermoluminescence measurements of vitreous samples showed glow curves with at least one peak with a maximum temperature of ~170°C after exposure to UV radiation in the temperature range 50-250°C. Samples were also exposed to beta radiation in the temperature range 25-275°C, also showing single peaks with a maximum temperature of ~150°C.

The clinical translation of polysarcosine (pSar) as polyethylene glycol (PEG) replacement in the development of novel nanomedicines creates a broad demand of polymeric material in high-quality making high-purity sarcosine N-carboxyanhydride (Sar-NCA) as monomer for its production inevitable. Within this report, we present the use of triethyloxonium tetrafluoroborate in Sar-NCA synthesis with focus on amino acid and chloride impurities to avoid the sublimation of Sar-NCAs. With a view towards upscaling into kilogram or ton scale, a new methodology of monomer purification is introduced by utilizing the Meerwein's Salt triethyloxonium tetrafluoroborate to remove chloride impurities by covalent binding and converting chloride ions into volatile products within a single step. The novel straightforward technique enables access to monomers with significantly reduced chloride content (<100 ppm) compared to Sar-NCA derived by synthesis or sublimation. The derived monomers enable the controlled-living polymerization in DMF and provide access to pSar polymers with Poisson-like molecular weight distribution within a high range of chain lengths (Xn 25-200). In conclusion, the reported method can be easily applied to Sar-NCA synthesis or purification of commercially available pSar-NCAs and eases access to well-defined hetero-telechelic pSar polymers.

The production of wood-based panels has a significant demand for mechanically strong and flexible biomass adhesives, serving as alternatives to nonrenewable and toxic formaldehyde-based adhesives. Nonetheless, plywood usually exhibits brittle fracture due to the inherent trade-off between rigidity and toughness, and it is susceptible to damage and deformation defects in production applications. Herein, inspired by the microstructure of dragonfly wings and the cross-linking structure of plant cell walls, a soybean meal (SM) adhesive with great strength and toughness was developed. The strategy was combined with a multiple assembly system based on the tannic acid (TA) stripping/modification of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2@TA) hybrids, phenylboronic acid/quaternary ammonium doubly functionalized chitosan (QCP), and SM. Motivated by the microstructure of dragonfly wings, MoS2@TA was tightly bonded with the SM framework through Schiff base and strong hydrogen bonding to dissipate stress energy through crack deflection, bridging, and immobilization. QCP imitated borate chemistry in plant cell walls to optimize interfacial interactions within the adhesive by borate ester bonds, boron-nitrogen coordination bonds, and electrostatic interactions and dissipate energy through sacrificial bonding. The shear strength and fracture toughness of the SM/QCP/MoS2@TA adhesive were 1.58 MPa and 0.87 J, respectively, which were 409.7% and 866.7% higher than those of the pure SM adhesive. In addition, MoS2@TA and QCP gave the adhesive good mildew resistance, durability, weatherability, and fire resistance. This bioinspired design strategy offers a viable and sustainable approach for creating multifunctional strong and tough biobased materials.

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is a highly aggressive and lethal form of primary brain tumour. Borax has been demonstrated to exhibit anti-cancer activity through cell death pathways. However, the specific impact of borax on ferroptosis in GBM is not well-established, and the underlying regulatory mechanisms remain unclear. Initially, the effective concentration of borax on cell viability and proliferation in U251 and A172 cells was determined. Subsequently, the effects of borax on the wound healing were analysed. Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NRF2), glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPx4), glutathione (GSH), HSP70 protein 5 (HSPA5), malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and caspase-3/7 activity were determined in borax-treated and untreated cells. Finally, the protein expression levels of HSPA5, NRF2 and GPx4 were analysed. Borax suppressed cell viability and proliferation in U251 and A172 cells in a concentration- and time-dependent manner. In addition, borax treatment decreased GPx4, GSH, HSPA5 and NRF2 levels in U251 and A172 cells while increasing MDA levels and caspase-3/7 activity. Moreover, borax reduced mRNA and protein levels of HSPA5, NRF2 and GPx4 in U251 and A172 cells. Consequently, borax may induce ferroptosis in GBM cells and regulate the associated regulatory mechanisms targeting NRF2 and HSPA5 pathways. This knowledge may contribute to the development of novel therapeutic approaches targeting ferroptosis in GBM and potentially improve patient outcomes.

Plant nanobionic sensors enable real-time monitoring of signaling molecules in plants by interfacing them with specifically designed nanoprobes, which have been acknowledged as species-independent analytical tools. In this study, we developed a plant nanobionic sensor for in vivo detection of extracellular adenosine triphosphate (eATP) in living plants by designing a novel second near-infrared (NIR-II) fluorescent metal-organic framework (MOF) nanoprobe. The NIR-II fluorescent nanoprobe (IR-1061 micelle@ZIF-90) with a sandwich structure was synthesized by successive encapsulation of the hydrophobic NIR-II dye IR-1061 with the amphipathic polymer DSPE-mPEG 2000 and MOF ZIF-90. Interestingly, coating ZIF-90 around IR-1061 micelles increased the NIR-II fluorescence 16.6-fold. Utilizing the ultrahigh NIR-II fluorescent emission of the designed nanoprobes and specific recognition of ZIF-90 to ATP, the nanoprobes were applied to spatial and temporal monitoring eATP in model and non-model plants under environmental stress.

BACKGROUND: Recent research indicates a prevalence of typical lung infections, such as pneumonia, in lung cancer patients. Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Acinetobacter baumannii stand out as antibiotic-resistant pathogens. Given this, there is a growing interest in alternative therapeutic avenues. Boron and zinc derivatives exhibit antimicrobial, antiviral, and antifungal properties. OBJECTIVES: This research aimed to establish the effectiveness of ZnO and ZB NPs in combating bacterial infections in lung cancer cell lines. METHODS: Initially, this study determined the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and fractional inhibitory concentration (FIC) of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) and zinc borate (ZB) on chosen benchmark strains. Subsequent steps involved gauging treatment success through a lung cancer-bacteria combined culture and immunohistochemical analysis. RESULTS: The inhibitory impact of ZnO NPs on bacteria was charted as follows: 0.97 µg/mL for K. pneumoniae 700603, 1.95 µg/mL for P. aeruginosa 27853, and 7.81 µg/mL for Acinetobacter baumannii 19,606. In comparison, the antibacterial influence of zinc borate was measured as 7.81 µg/mL for Klebsiella pneumoniae 700603 and 500 µg/mL for both P. aeruginosa 27853 and A.baumannii 19606. After 24 h, the cytotoxicity of ZnO NPs and ZB was analyzed using the MTT technique. The lowest cell viability was marked in the 500 µg/mL ZB NPs group, with a viability rate of 48.83% (P < 0.001). However, marked deviations appeared at ZB concentrations of 61.5 µg/mL (P < 0.05) and ZnO NPs at 125 µg/mL. CONCLUSION: A synergistic microbial inhibitory effect was observed when ZnO NP and ZB were combined against the bacteria under investigation.

In this research, the analytical method was developed and evaluated for determining phenol and its nine derivatives belong to the US EPA priority pollutant list in water samples by using dual-channeled capillary electrophoresis (CE) coupled with two types of optical detectors, namely LED-induced fluorescence (LEDIF) and ultraviolet (UV) detectors. The optimal background electrolytes for the first and second CE channels were 20 mM borate (pH 9.80) with 400 µM fluorescein and 55 mM borate (pH 11.75), respectively. The two-step liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) was used for sample preparation and enrichment, in which phenol and its derivatives were extracted from the aqueous phase using 10 mL of n-hexane/1-octanol (60/40, v/v) and then were back extracted into a 0.1 M NaOH as a final acceptor phase. Under the optimal CE and two-step LLE conditions, the enrichment factors of 10 phenols were 184 - 1120-fold, and the method detection limits were lowered to 0.02-0.60 µg/L. The obtained intra-day and inter-day precisions in terms of relative standard deviations (RSD) were between 4.0 and 7.3 % and 6.7 and 14 %, respectively. This approach was used to determine phenols in water samples, with recoveries ranging from 82.0 to 108.9 %. In combination with sample enrichment by two-step LLE extraction, this is the first CE study conducted to determine phenols in the EPA list using two detector approaches, specifically CE-LEDIF/CE-UV.

The prodrug strategy for its potential to enhance the pharmacokinetic and/or pharmacodynamic properties of drugs, especially chemotherapeutic agents, has been widely recognized as an important means to improve therapeutic efficiency. Irinotecan's active metabolite, 7-ethyl-10-hydroxycamptothecin (SN38), a borate derivative, was incorporated into a G-quadruplex hydrogel (GB-SN38) by the ingenious and simple approach. Drug release does not depend on carboxylesterase, thus bypassing the side effects caused by ineffective activation, but specifically responds to the ROS-overexpressed tumor microenvironment by oxidative hydrolysis of borate ester that reduces serious systemic toxicity from nonspecific biodistribution of SN38. Comprehensive spectroscopy was used to define the structural and physicochemical characteristics of the drug-loaded hydrogel. The GB-SN38 hydrogel's high level of biosafety and notable tumor-suppressive properties were proven in in vitro and in vivo tests.

Cadmium (Cd) is a ubiquitous environmental pollutant, and Cd exposure harms human health, agriculture, and animal husbandry. The present study aimed to investigate the potential protective effect of dietary supplementation of calcium tetraborate (CTB) on productive performance, oxidative stress, cecal microflora, and histopathological changes in quail exposed to Cd. A total of one hundred twenty, 6-week-old Japanese quail (four females and two males/replicate) were divided into four groups (30 quails/group): the control group (feeding basic diet), CTB group (basic diet containing 300 mg/kg CaB4O7, 22.14% elemental B/kg diet), the Cd group (basic diet containing 100 mg/kg cadmium chloride (CdCl2) (total Cd content of 92.1 mg/kg)) and the CTB + Cd group (basic diet containing 300 mg/kg CTB and 100 mg/kg CdCl2). The results showed that Cd exposure caused decreased performance, increased the proportion of broken and soft-shelled eggs, induced oxidative stress, affected cecal microflora, epicardial hemorrhages in the heart, focal necrosis in the liver, degeneration in the kidneys, and degenerated and necrotic seminiferous tubules in the testicles. CTB prevented Cd-induced oxidative stress in liver tissue by increasing total antioxidant status and reducing total oxidant status. In addition, CTB improved egg production and feed conversion ratio (FCR). CTB protected the cecal microflora by inhibiting Enterobacteriaceae and promoting Lactobacillus. CTB also reduced Cd-induced histopathological damage in the heart, liver, kidneys, and testicles. In conclusion, these findings suggest that CTB could be used in Cd-challenged quail, and this compound provides new insights into the toxicity of environmental Cd.

The development of radiation therapy necessitated a continuous R&D for radiotherapy rooms' glass windows to reach the highest levels of protection for the staff of the radiotherapy facility. Therefore, in this article, a novel type of lead borate glass depending on parallel augmenting of lead and boron was produced to be used as gamma-rays and fast and thermal neutrons barriers in radiotherapy rooms. Neutrons and gamma rays' attenuation parameters, fast neutrons removal cross section ${\varSigma}_R$, thermal neutron total cross section ${\sigma}_T$, mass attenuation coefficient $\sigma$, linear attenuation coefficient µ, half-value layer, mean free path, effective atomic number Zeff, effective electron density Neff, and buildup factor for energy absorption (energy absorption buildup factor) and exposure (exposure buildup factor) were studied extensively. Three tools, Phy-X/PSD, EpiXS and XCOM computer programs and the standard mixture rules were utilized to estimate the attenuation parameters. The improvement caused by the augmentation of lead and boron in both gamma rays and neutrons attenuation was evident from the obtained results. The glass containing the highest lead and boron concentration PbB5, 40Pb-50B, which is the most efficient attenuator for gamma rays and both thermal and fast neutrons was recommended to be a distinguished choice as a shield in a radiotherapy room.

Herein, a pH-responsive dual cross-linked hydrogel for controlled drug release is presented. The hydrogel was constructed with reversible borate ester bonds and crystalline poly(vinyl alcohol). By changing the environmental pH, its physicochemical characteristics, including rheological properties, mechanical properties, microstructural features, and the biocompatibility of the gels, were evaluated. The gels at tumor acidic conditions exhibited swelling and lower compressive strength and modulus than those in a physiological environment, which was attributed to the pH-responsive borate ester bonds and the protonation of amine groups on the PEI polyelectrolyte. Importantly, the drug-encapsulated biocompatible hydrogel showed sustained and increased release under an acidic environment, and it followed the Fickian diffusion mechanism. Therefore, it exemplifies that borate ester bond-based pH-responsive biomaterials have high promise in biomedical research, especially for drug delivery.

New organic nanostructures were synthesized by introducing 2-methylbenzimidazole (MBI) molecules from a melt, gas phase, or alcoholic solution into nanosized voids of borate porous glasses (PG), nanotubes of chrysotile asbestos (ChA), and mesoporous silica (MS). The incorporation of MBI into borate glasses with different pore sizes is accompanied by the appearance of several phases formed by nanocrystallites which have a MBI crystal structure, but somewhat differ in lattice parameters. The size of some crystallites significantly exceeds the size of nanopores, which indicates the presence of long-scale correlations of the crystal structure. The size of MBI nanocrystallites in ChA was close to the diameter of nanotubes (D ~10 nm), which shows the absence of crystal structure correlations. The XRD pattern of mesoporous silica filled by MBI does not exhibit reflections caused by MBI and a presence of MBI was confirmed only by the analysis of correlation function. The incorporation of MBI molecules into matrices is observed through optical IR absorption spectroscopy (FTIR) and photoluminescence. Introducing MBI in ChA and MS is followed by the appearance of bright green photoluminescence, the spectral structure of which is analogous to MBI crystals but slightly shifted in the blue region, probably due to a quantum-size effect. The influence of MBI inclusion in PG and ChA on the permittivity, dielectric losses, conductivity, and parameters of their hopping conductivity is analyzed.

Impaired angiogenesis is one of the predominant reasons for non-healing diabetic wounds. Cobalt is well known for its capacity to induce angiogenesis by stabilizing hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) and subsequently inducing the production of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). In this study, Co-containing borate bioactive glasses and their derived fibers were fabricated by partially replacing CaO in 1393B3 borate glass with CoO. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analyses were performed to characterize the effect of Co incorporation on the glass structure, and the results showed that the substitution promoted the transformation of [BO3] into [BO4] units, which endow the glass with higher chemical durability and lower reaction rate with the simulated body fluid (SBF), thereby achieving sustained and controlled Co2+ ion release. In vitro biological assays were performed to assess the angiogenic potential of the Co-containing borate glass fibers. It was found that the released Co2+ ion significantly enhanced the proliferation, migration and tube formation of the Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells (HUVECs) by upregulating the expression of angiogenesis-related proteins such as HIF-1α and VEGF. Finally. In vivo results demonstrated that the Co-containing fibers accelerated full-thickness skin wound healing in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rat model by promoting angiogenesis and re-epithelialization.

In this study, a borate hyper-crosslinked polymer was synthesized by crosslinking 1-naphthalene boric acid and dimethoxymethane via the Friedel-Crafts reaction. The prepared polymer exhibits excellent adsorption performance toward alkaloids and polyphenols with maximum adsorption capacities ranging from 25.07 to 39.60 mg/g. Adsorption kinetics and isotherms model results indicated the adsorption was a monolayer and chemical process. Under the optimal extraction conditions, a sensitive method was established for the simultaneous quantification of alkaloids and polyphenols in green tea and Coptis chinensis by coupling with the proposed sorbent and ultra-high performance liquid chromatography detection. The proposed method exhibited a wide linear range of 5.0-5000.0 ng/ml with R2 ≥ 0.99, a low limit of detection (0.66-11.25 ng/ml), and satisfactory recoveries (81.2%-117.4%). This work provides a simple and convenient candidate for the sensitive determination of alkaloids and polyphenols in green tea and complex herbal products.

With the development of technology, the application areas of radiation have expanded and have an important place in our daily life. For this reason, we need more advanced and effective shielding materials to protect lives from the harmful effects of radiation. In this study, a simple combustion method was utilized to synthesize zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles, and obtained nanoparticles' structural and morphological features were examined. The synthesized ZnO particles are used to produce different percentages (0, 2.5, 5, 7.5, 10%) of ZnO-doped glass samples. The structural and radiation shielding parameters of obtained glasses are examined. For this purpose, the Linear attenuation coefficient (LAC) has been measured via 65Zn and 60Co gamma sources and NaI(Tl) (ORTEC® 905-4) detector system has been used. Using the obtained LAC values, Mass Attenuation Coefficient (MAC), Half-Value Layer (HVL), Tenth-Value Layers (TVL), and Mean-Free Path (MFP) for glass samples have been calculated. According to these radiation shielding parameters, it was concluded that these ZnO doped glass samples provide effective results in radiation shielding and can be used as a shielding material effectively.

As a DNA damaging agent, oxaliplatin (OXA) can induce immunogenic cell death (ICD) in tumors to activate the immune system. However, the DNA damage induced by OXA is limited and the ICD effect is not strong enough to enhance anti-tumor efficacy. Here, we propose a strategy to maximize the ICD effect of OXA through the mild hyperthermia generated by nanoparticles with a platinum (IV) prodrug of OXA (Pt(IV)-C16) and a near-infrared-II (NIR-II) photothermal agent IR1061 upon the irradiation of NIR-II light. The mild hyperthermia (43 °C) holds advantages in two aspects: 1) increase the Pt-DNA cross-linking, leading to enhanced DNA damage and apoptosis; 2) induce stronger ICD effects for cancer immunotherapy. We demonstrated that, compared with OXA and photothermal therapy of IR1061 alone, these nanoparticles under NIR-II light irradiation can significantly improve the anti-cancer efficacy against triple-negative breast cancer 4T1 tumor. This new strategy provides an effective way to improve the therapeutic outcome of OXA. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: OXA could induce immunogenic cell death (ICD) via stimulating immune responses by increasing tumor cell stress and death, which triggers tumor-specific immune responses to achieve immunotherapy. However, due to the insufficient Pt-DNA crosslinks, the ICD effect triggered by OXA cannot induce robust immune response. Mild hyperthermia has great potential to maximize the therapeutic outcome of oxaliplatin by increasing the Pt-DNA cross-linking to augment the immunoresponse for enhanced cancer immunotherapy.

Biocatalytic nucleoside (trans-)glycosylations catalyzed by nucleoside phosphorylases have evolved into a practical and convenient approach to the preparation of modified nucleosides, which are important pharmaceuticals for the treatment of various cancers and viral infections. However, the obtained yields in these reactions are generally determined exclusively by the innate thermodynamic properties of the nucleosides involved, hampering the biocatalytic access to many sought-after target nucleosides. We herein report an additional means for reaction engineering of these systems. We show how apparent equilibrium shifts in phosphorolysis and glycosylation reactions can be effected through entropically driven, biased esterification of nucleosides and ribosyl phosphates with inorganic borate. Our multifaceted analysis further describes the kinetic implications of this in situ reactant esterification for a model phosphorylase.

The production of thermoluminescence (TL) dosimeters fabricated from B2O3-CaF2-Al2O3-SiO2 doped with Cu and Pr for use in diagnostic radiology is the main goal of this research. The TL samples were synthesized via the melt-quench technique processed by melting the mixture at 1200 °C for 1 h, and, after cooling, the sample thus created was divided into two samples and retreated by heating for 2 h (referred to as TLV30) and for 15 h (referred to as TLV17). SEM and EDS analyses were performed on the TL samples to confirm the preparation process and to investigate the effects of irradiation dosimetry on the TL samples. Furthermore, the TL samples were irradiated with γ-rays using a 450 Ci 137Cs irradiator and variable X-ray beams (5-70 mGy). Two important diagnostic radiology applications were considered: CT (6-24 mGy) and mammography (2.72-10.8 mGy). Important dosimetric properties, such as the glow curves, reproducibility, dose-response linearity, energy dependence, minimum dose detectability and fading, were investigated for the synthetized samples (TLV17 and TLV30), the results of which were compared with the Harshaw TLD-100. The TLV17 dosimeter showed higher sensitivity than TLV30 in all applied irradiation procedures. The dose-response linearity coefficients of determination R2 for TLV17 were higher than TLD-100 and TLV30 in some applications and were almost equal in others. The reproducibility results of TLV17, TLV30 and TLD-100 were less than 5%, which is acceptable. On the other hand, the results of the fading investigations showed that, in general, TLV17 showed less fading than TLV30. Both samples showed a significant decrease in this regard after the first day, and then the signal variation became essentially stable though with a slight decrease until the eighth day. Therefore, it is recommended to read the TL dosimeters after 24 h, as with TLD-100. The SEM images confirmed the existence of crystallization, whilst the EDS spectra confirmed the presence of the elements used for preparation. Furthermore, we noticed that TLV17 had grown dense crystals that were larger in size compared to those of TLV30, which explains the higher sensitivity in TLV17. Overall, despite the fading, TLV17 showed greater radiation sensitivity and dose-response linearity compared with TLD-100. The synthetized TL samples showed their suitability for use as dosimeters in diagnostic radiology radiation dosimetry.
