RESUMO

Tooth-related inflammatory disorders, including caries, pulpitis, apical periodontitis (AP), and periodontitis (PD), are primarily caused by resident oral microorganisms. Although these dental inflammatory conditions are typically not life-threatening, neglecting them can result in significant complications and greatly reduce an individual's quality of life. Nuclear factor κB (NF-κB), a family formed by various combinations of Rel proteins, is extensively involved in inflammatory diseases and even cancer. This study reviews recent data on NF-κB signaling and its role in dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs), dental pulp fibroblasts (DPFs), odontoblasts, human periodontal ligament cells (hPDLCs), and various experimental animal models. The findings indicate that NF-κB signaling is abnormally activated in caries, pulpitis, AP, and PD, leading to changes in related cellular differentiation. Under specific conditions, NF-κB signaling occasionally interacts with other signaling pathways, affecting inflammation, bone metabolism, and tissue regeneration processes. In summary, data collected over recent years confirm the central role of NF-κB in dental inflammatory diseases, potentially providing new insights for drug development targeting NF-κB signaling pathways in the treatment of these conditions. It is not clear whether different radiation methods have different effects on enamel. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of single and fractionated radiation on enamel and caries susceptibility and to provide an experimental basis for further study of radiation­related caries. Thirty-six caries-free human third molars were collected and randomly divided into three groups (n = 12). Group1 (control group) was not exposed to radiation. Group 2 received single radiation with a cumulative dose of 70 Gy. Group 3 underwent fractionated radiation, receiving 2 Gy/day for 5 days followed by a 2-day rest period, for a total of 7 weeks with a cumulative dose of 70 Gy. Changes in microhardness, roughness, surface morphology, bacterial adhesion and ability of acid resistance of each group were tested. Scanning electron microscope revealed that the enamel surface in both radiation groups exhibited unevenness and cracks. Compared with the control group, microhardness and acid resistance of enamel decreased, while roughness and bacterial adhesion increased in both the single radiation and fractionated radiation groups. Compared with the single radiation group, the enamel surface microhardness and acid resistance decreased in the fractionated radiation group, while roughness and bacterial adhesion increased. Both single radiation and fractionated radiation resulting in changes in the physical and biological properties of enamel, with these changes being more pronounced in the fractionated radiation group. Therefore, fractionated radiation is recommended as a more suitable method for constructing a radiation­related caries model in vitro.

SUMMARY: CariesCare International ™ practical guide is a tool for the comprehensive assessment and treatment of caries that synthesizes clinical and radiographic diagnosis and risk factors, classifying the severity, progression, and activity of lesions. The objective of this study was to analyze the validity and prediction characteristics of the proposed dental caries classification in the CariesCare International ™ practical guide as a reference through clinical and radiographic evaluation versus histological evaluation. Ninety-seven permanent posterior teeth were evaluated, and clinical and radiographic diagnoses were determined according to parameters defined in the CariesCare International™ guide as a reference. Subsequently, histological evaluation was performed to compare each stage of dental caries progression, and statistical analysis was applied. When comparing the validity and prediction values between radiographic and clinical diagnoses in relation to histological evaluation, a low sensitivity and high specificity relationship was found. The sensitivity and specificity percentages between the clinical and radiographic methods show that the clinical method has a lower number of false negatives. Histological changes in dental tissue were evident from the earliest stages of lesions, even in those not related to the caries process, indicating that the dentist should be careful when deciding on a treatment plan and take into account all variables involved in the caries process, as proposed by the CariesCare International ™ guide.


La guía práctica CariesCare International™ es una herramienta para la evaluación y tratamiento integral de la caries que sintetiza el diagnóstico clínico y radiográfico y los factores de riesgo, clasificando la gravedad, progresión y actividad de las lesiones. El objetivo de este estudio fue analizar la validez y características de predicción de la clasificación de caries dental propuesta en la guía práctica CariesCare International™ como referencia a través de la evaluación clínica y radiográfica versus la evaluación histológica. Se evaluaron noventa y siete dientes posteriores permanentes y se determinaron diagnósticos clínicos y radiográficos según parámetros definidos en la guía CariesCare International™ como referencia. Posteriormente se realizó una evaluación histológica para comparar cada etapa de progresión de la caries dental y se aplicó análisis estadístico. Al comparar los valores de validez y predicción entre los diagnósticos radiológicos y clínicos en relación con la evaluación histológica, se encontró una relación de baja sensibilidad y alta especificidad. Los porcentajes de sensibilidad y especificidad entre el método clínico y radiográfico muestran que el método clínico tiene un menor número de falsos negativos. Los cambios histológicos en el tejido dental fueron evidentes desde las primeras etapas de las lesiones, incluso en aquellas no relacionadas con el proceso de caries, lo que indica que el odontólogo debe tener cuidado al decidir un plan de tratamiento y tener en cuenta todas las variables involucradas en el proceso de caries, tal como propone la guía CariesCare International™.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this research was to compare the efficacy of the remineralising potential of self-assembling peptides (SAPs): Curodont Repair (P11-4), P26, and leucine-rich amelogenin peptides (LRAP) with the standard 5% NaF varnish (Duraphat) on early enamel caries lesions (EECLs). METHODS: A demineralising solution (DS) was used to create artificial EECLs in human dental enamel specimens, which were randomly allocated to treatment groups: P11-4; P26 solution; LRAP solution; 5% NaF varnish; and deionised water (DIW). Each specimen was subjected to 8 days of pH cycling. Specimens from each test group were subjected to microcomputed tomography (micro-CT) and nanomechanical testing to assess mineral density (MD), hardness (H), and elastic modulus (EM) properties of sound, demineralised, and treated enamel. RESULTS: The mean MD percentage gain was highest in the P26 and P11-4 groups, followed by the LRAP, 5% NaF varnish, and DIW groups. There were statistically significant differences amongst groups. In the outer layer of EECLs, the EM and H were highest in P26 and P11-4 groups, followed by the LRAP and 5% NaF varnish. In the inner layer of EECLs, the EM and H were highest in P11-4 and P26 groups, indicative of enhanced penetration and remineralisation of the deeper parts of the artificial EECLs. CONCLUSIONS: P26 and P11-4 SAPs are more effective than 5% NaF varnish in remineralising the depth of EECLs.

BACKGROUND: Mineralization-promoting peptide-3 (MPP3) is a new biomimetic remineralization agent. AIM: To assess the remineralization efficiency of MPP3, either alone or in combination with fluoride gel. DESIGN: The samples were divided into four groups: control, 1.23% fluoride gel, 10% MPP3 gel, and 1.23% fluoride gel + 10% MPP3. Following the application of remineralization agents (4 min), the samples remained in a pH-cycling model (37°C, 4 weeks). Microhardness, microcomputed tomography (micro-CT), polarized light microscopy (PLM), and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) analysis were conducted. RM-ANOVA, one-way ANOVA, and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) were used for statistical analysis, and a significance level of p < .05 was employed. RESULTS: Mineralization-promoting peptide 3 and fluoride gel + MPP3 increased the microhardness of the enamel compared with initial values in each group (p < .05). Mineralization-promoting peptide 3 successfully maintained the mineral density of enamel, although the cariogenic pH-cycling and PLM results indicated that the lesion depth (µm) was significantly lower in the fluoride gel + MPP3 group (27.0336 ± 12.53650) than in the control group (37.3907 ± 12.76002, p < .05). CONCLUSION: The combined use of MPP3 with fluoride gel enhanced the caries-protective and mineralization-promoting effects of fluoride. Mineralization-promoting peptide 3 may be a potential agent that can be employed to improve the physical properties of enamel.

BACKGROUND: Self-assembling peptide (SAP) P11-4 was introduced to treat initial caries lesions by means of guiding hydroxyapatite regeneration within the lesion. The objective of this study was to assess its effectiveness in a practical clinical setting. METHODS: Caries lesions in permanent teeth treated with monomeric and polymeric SAP P11-4 from May 2015 through October 2020 were retrospectively analyzed at lesion and child levels by means of bite-wing radiography for changes in stage and cavitation and restoration. RESULTS: Two hundred and nineteen children aged 10 through 19 years with a total of 405 proximal lesions in posterior teeth were followed from 0.4 through 5.5 years (median, 7 months; interquartile range, 6-19 months). Regression occurred in 37% of stage RA1 (radiolucency in the outer one-half of enamel) (95% CI, 31% to 44%), 38% of stage RA2 (radiolucency in the inner one-half of enamel plus or minus the enamel-dentin junction) (95% CI, 30% to 45%), and 40% of stage RA3 (radiolucency limited to the outer one-third of dentin) (95% CI, 16% to 68%) lesions. The proportion of lesions with no cavitation was 0.96 (95% CI, 0.94 to 0.98) after 1 year and 0.91 (95% CI, 0.88 to 0.95) after 2 years. CONCLUSIONS: Real-world clinical data indicate that SAP P11-4 can lead to recovery and a healthier tooth stage. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: SAP P11-4 is a safe treatment for initial caries lesions in permanent teeth that remineralizes in the deepest zone of the lesion and can be introduced easily into routine dental practice.

Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is a common nutritional disease associated with early childhood caries. This study aimed to explore the role of iron levels in pathological changes of dental caries in childhood. Rats were divided into four groups based on their iron content: IDA, positive control (PC), high iron (HI), and negative control (NC). Except for the rats in the NC group, rats in the other groups were inoculated with Streptococcus mutans and fed cariogenic high-sugar fodder to induce caries. Three months later, the caries status of the molars was evaluated at both the smooth and sulcal surfaces according to Keyes scores. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was performed to reveal microstructural changes in caries. Energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) was used to determine the elemental composition of the enamel and dentin. In addition, the histopathology of the salivary gland was detected using hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining.The results showed that rats in the PC group exhibited obvious carious lesions. The carious score was significantly higher in the IDA group than in the PC group but was lower in the HI group. SEM revealed complete destruction of the enamel and damage to the middle dentin in the IDA group. In contrast, the molars in the HI group exhibited some degree of enamel demineralization, but the underlying dentin was almost intact. In addition, the elemental compositions of the enamel and dentin were similar among the four groups, and iron was detected only in the HI group. No differences were observed in the morphological structures of the salivary glands of rats from the different groups. In conclusion, ID enhanced the pathological damage of caries, whereas HI weakened it. Iron may participate in the pathological damage caused by childhood caries by affecting enamel mineralization.

Microscopic alterations in the dental pulp of dogs have not been extensively studied. The aim of this study was to investigate microscopic alterations of the dental pulp in dogs' teeth. One hundred and ten surgically extracted teeth (20 incisors, 23 canines, 28 premolars, and 39 molars) from 74 dogs, of different ages, with a history of chronic periodontitis (66 dogs), periapical abscesses (2 dogs), pulpitis (2 dogs), oral cavity neoplasms (2 dogs), dens invaginatus (1 dog), and dental fractures (1 dog) were included. Eight-one maxillary and 29 mandibular teeth were included. Coronal, radicular, and coronal plus radicular calculus were present in 28.2%, 17.3%, and 54.5% of the teeth, respectively. In total 78 teeth (71%) had pulp alterations, including fibrosis (26%), calcification (14%), necrosis associated with the absence of odontoblasts (14%), presence of predentin and dentin inside the cavity (8%), odontoblastic hyperplasia (3%), pigmentation (3%), pulpitis (2%), and pulp stones (1%). Forty-nine (60.5%) of the maxillary teeth and all of the mandibular teeth had pulp alterations. The premolars were most affected, and the molars least affected, by pulp alterations. Pulp fibrosis, calcification, and necrosis were observed in teeth irrespective of the distribution of dental calculus.

Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome (MRS) is a neuromucocutaneous disease of unknown pathogenesis. With this communication, we describe a case of a 26-year-old woman with complete MRS in whom Mycolicibacterium fortuitum was detected in the swelling lip biopsy by next- generation sequencing. The patient's symptoms were slightly improved after intralesional corticosteroid injection combined with broad-spectrum antibiotics, while they were significantly improved after further treatment of dental caries and removal of the residual root. This case provides insight into the possible microbial infection pathogenesis of MRS, and M. fortuitum was speculated to be related to granulomatous and neuronal disorders, most probably from odontogenic origin.

BACKGROUND: Sex dimorphism has been implicated in oral health differences and the pathogenesis of oral diseases, such as tooth agenesis, periodontal disease, dental caries, and tooth loss. Tooth agenesis (TA) is one of the most common developmental anomalies in humans, and its prevalence and patterns are different across ethnic groups. The aim of this study was to investigate the phenotypes and sex-associated patterns of nonsyndromic tooth agenesis (TA) in Thai dental patients. METHODS: One thousand ninety panoramic radiographs were examined. One hundred and one subjects (37 males, 64 females, 15-20 years-old) with nonsyndromic TA were evaluated. Differences in TA prevalence between groups were analyzed using the chi-square or Fisher exact test. RESULTS: The TA prevalence, excluding third molars, was 9.3% and more frequently found in the mandible compared with the maxilla. The maxilla demonstrated a higher prevalence of first premolar agenesis than the mandible (P = 0.012), while the mandible had a higher prevalence of second premolar agenesis than the maxilla (P = 0.031). There were significantly more males missing one tooth than females, however, there were more females missing two or more teeth than males (P = 0.042). A missing maxillary left lateral incisor was significantly more frequent in males (P = 0.019), while a missing mandibular right lateral incisor was more frequent in females (P = 0.025). In females, the pattern of two mandibular lateral incisors agenesis was the most common and significantly present in females more than males (P = 0.015). In contrast, the pattern of one mandibular left lateral incisor agenesis was only observed in males and significantly found in males more than females (P = 0.047). CONCLUSIONS: We demonstrate sex-associated differences in nonsyndromic tooth agenesis. The prevalence of single tooth agenesis was higher in males, while that of two or more teeth agenesis was higher in females. We found different patterns of lateral incisor agenesis between males and females.

Aim: Demineralization can be arrested or reversed when remineralization agents are applied to incipient carious or noncavitated carious lesions. A large number of therapeutic agents, including nonfluoridated products, have been developed to promote enamel remineralization. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of different remineralizing agents on artificially demineralized enamel lesions. Materials and Methods: The present in vitro study was conducted on 75 sound premolars divided into three groups of normal, demineralized (n = 15 each), and remineralized teeth (n = 45). The remineralized teeth were further subdivided into three groups (n = 15) as remineralized with 2% sodium fluoride (NaF), 2% NaF, and Psoralea corylifolia (bakuchi) and white mineral trioxide aggregate. Specimens of each group were treated with the above-mentioned remineralizing agents and then subjected to Vickers hardness number (VHN), scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX), and magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS-NMR) for further evaluation. Results: The test results showed significantly the highest VHN and the emission peak of elements under the EDX test, such as calcium, phosphorous, oxygen, and fluorine with remineralized with NaF + bakuchi. MAS-NMR spectra showed fluorine and phosphorous peak in a group with NaF + bakuchi indicative of the increase in remineralization. NaF + bakuchi showed effective results in VHN, SEM-EDX, and MAS-NMR with no antagonist interaction. Conclusion: Thus, P. Corylifolia presents an advantage in enhancing remineralization and inhibiting demineralization for early carious lesions and can be used as a herbal extract for effective reduction in pathogenic bacteria.

AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate clinical and radiographical success of ozonoid olive oil as an indirect pulp capping (IPC) agent in primary mandibular second molar when compared to calcium hydroxide and to evaluate the antimicrobial efficacy of ozonoid olive oil on Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacilli. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A split-mouth randomized controlled trial was conducted on 30 primary mandibular second molars in 15 children of age 5-9 years with deep dentinal carious lesion. Teeth were randomly allocated to two groups of 15 each. After achieving local anesthesia and rubber dam isolation, an IPC procedure was performed using ozonoid olive oil in group I and calcium hydroxide in group II. Teeth were evaluated clinically and radiographically at 6 and 12 months of follow-up for success or failure of IPC. The bacterial counts of S. mutans and Lactobacilli were measured before and after application of ozonoid olive oil for 60 seconds on dentinal tissue in group I and recorded as colony-forming units per mL (CFU/mL). RESULTS: There were no statistically significant differences found between the materials used for IPC (p >0.05). About 93.33% and 100% clinical and radiographical success rates were seen in group I and group II, respectively. Statistically significant differences were observed for bacterial reduction after the application of ozonoid olive oil (p <0.05) for both the microorganisms. CONCLUSION: The results of this study showed that the success of IPC is independent of capping material. Ozonoid olive oil, an antimicrobial agent, can also be used for IPC. The success of the IPC procedure depends on a reduction in the bacterial count and sealing of the tooth with hermetic restoration. More clinical studies with a larger sample size and longer follow-up duration are required for understanding the efficacy of this material. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Ozonoid olive oil can be used as an IPC agent in primary molars and also for a bacterial reduction in dentinal caries.

INTRODUCTION: Radicular cysts (RCs) and residual radicular cysts (RRCs) are the sequelae of dental caries and that leads to proliferation of epithelial rests of Malassez in periapical tissues. OBJECTIVES: The aim was to evaluate the relationship between Langerhans cells, macrophages, matrix metalloproteinases (MMP-9, MMP-13), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) in the capsule and lining epithelium of cystic lesions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty RCs and 20 RRCs were submitted to immunohistochemical analysis with anti-CD68, anti-CD1a, anti-MMP-9, anti-MMP-13, and anti-TNF-α antibodies. The Mann-Whitney test and the Spearman correlation test were used for analysis of the data (P<0.05). RESULTS: The immunoexpression of MMP-13 and CD68 was significantly higher in RCs when compared with RRCs (P=0.011 and 0.012, respectively). The presence of an intense inflammatory infiltrate was significantly correlated with the immunoexpression of CD68 in RCs (P=0.025). Expression of CD68 showed a significant positive correlation with MMP-13 (P=0.015). A moderate correlation was observed between MMP-9 and MMP-13 (P=0.010). TNF-α expression was more common in RCs (P=0.001). CD1a was more frequently expressed in atrophic epithelium (P=0.041) and was significantly correlated with TNF-α (P=0.014). CONCLUSION: Langerhans cells induce a greater release of TNF-α which, in turn, is responsible for the stimulation of M1 macrophages. Higher immunoexpression of MMP-13 and MMP-9 is observed in the early stages of RCs compared with RRCs. Therefore, the toxins of microorganisms present in highly inflamed RCs are the main factors triggering a proinflammatory immune response and greater cystic expansion in the early stages of these lesions.

This study evaluated dental caries detection ability between the Qraycam and Qraypen on the same dental caries lesions. A total of 178teeth from 61patients were imaged using Qraypen C®(QC) and Qraycam Pro®(QP) devices and evaluated using analysis software (QA2). Occlusal, secondary, and proximal dental caries were evaluated and scored according to International Caries Detection and Assessment System(ICDAS II) and X-ray criteria. Bland-Altman plots were used to compare quantitative light-induced fluorescence(QLF) parameters obtained from the different QLF devices. Sensitivity, specificity, and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve(AUROC) were calculated. The ΔFaver. of the QLF-parameters showed that the mean difference between the two different QLF devices was close to zero and that the ± 5 error value was included in the mean ± 1.96SD range for the detection of dental caries. The accuracies for diagnosing occlusal dental caries were 0.83-0.96 and 0.81-0.82 and the accuracies for diagnosing proximal dental caries were 0.52-0.62 and 0.52-0.71 for the QC and QP devices, respectively. In conclusion, the ΔFaver. obtained from the QP showed diagnostic value mainly for screening of demineralized teeth. For teeth selected through screening, the depth of the lesion must be precisely evaluated using additional QP and radiographic imaging.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to show that optical coherence tomography (OCT) and thermal imaging can be used to monitor changes in the structure and activity of caries lesions over time after treatment with silver diamine fluoride (SDF). METHODS: Artificial caries lesions were formed on enamel and dentin bovine blocks. Each block was partitioned into five windows with the central three windows exposed to a demineralization solution to create lesions: one sound window served as a sound control (SC), one sound window was exposed to SDF to serve as a test control (SCT), one lesion window served as a lesion control (LC), one lesion window received one application of SDF (L1), while the other lesion window received two applications of SDF (L2). Each window was scanned using OCT before SDF application, and every week subsequently, for 12 weeks after initial SDF treatment. Changes in the mean intensity and the width of the peak of increased reflectivity due to the lesion and SDF along with the intensity at a depth of 180 µm from the surface representing optical penetration through the lesion were monitored. Changes in the heat lost, ΔQ (temperature integrated over time) of each window during drying with air were also monitored using a thermal imaging camera. Transverse microradiography (TMR), and high-resolution microscopy were also used for the analysis of selected samples. RESULTS: The reflectivity and optical penetration of sound and lesion areas of enamel and dentin manifested significant changes in OCT images after SDF application. Thermal imaging showed significant differences in ΔQ indicative of permeability changes in the sound and lesion areas of enamel and dentin after SDF application.

SUMMARY: Most of the dental diseases occur due to tooth or jaw morphology or nutritional habits. Anatomical differences in the teeth and jaws of men and women can cause different dental diseases between the sexes. In this study, 33 skeletons obtained from the excavation of the ancient city of Parion, which are dated to the late Roman period, were examined. Dental diseases and possible causes were investigated on a total of 33 skeletons. In the evaluations, it was evaluated that some diseases were caused by the difference between the sexes, while some were classified as nutritional diseases. The rates of tooth decay are different between men and women with Parion. It has been determined that the most important reason for this is the different morphological structure of the jaws and teeth, but the nutritional differences also cause this. Other dental and jaw diseases were also evaluated in the Parion population.


RESUMEN: La mayoría de las enfermedades dentales se deben a la morfología de los dientes o la mandíbula o a los hábitos nutricionales. Las diferencias anatómicas en los dientes y las mandíbulas de hombres y mujeres pueden causar diferentes enfermedades dentales entre los sexos. En este estudio, se examinaron 33 esqueletos obtenidos de la excavación de la antigua ciudad de Parion, que datan del período romano tardío. Se investigaron las enfermedades dentales y las posibles causas en un total de 33 esqueletos. En las evaluaciones, se determinó que algunas enfermedades fueron causadas por la diferencia entre los sexos, mientras que otras fueron clasificadas como enfermedades nutricionales. Además se encontraron diferentes estimaciones de caries entre hombres y mujeres. Se analizó que la razón más importante de esto es la diferencia de la estructura morfológica de los maxilares y los dientes, sin embargo las diferencias nutricionales también es un factor que se debe considerar. Se evaluaron además, otras enfermedades dentales y de la mandíbula en la población de Parion.

We aimed to investigate the oral health of children in terms of the presence of dental caries, periodontal health, halitosis, and dentofacial changes in patients who had adenotonsillar hypertrophy related to mouth breathing and compared these findings with nasal breathing healthy and adenotonsillectomy-operated children. The patient group comprised 40 mouth-breathing children who were diagnosed with adenotonsillar hypertrophy, while the control group consisted of 40 nasal breathing children who had no adenotonsillar hypertrophy. Forty children who had undergone an adenotonsillectomy operation at least 1 year prior to the study were included in the treatment group. Oral examinations of all children were conducted, and the parents were asked about medical and dental anamnesis, demographic parameters, toothbrushing and nutrition habits, oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL), and symptoms of their children. Demographic parameters, toothbrushing and nutrition habits, and the presence of bad oral habits did not differ between groups (p > 0.05). Adenotonsillectomy is associated with a remarkable improvement in symptoms; however, some symptoms persist in a small number of children. The salivary flow rate, dmft/s, DMFT/S index, plaque, and gingival index scores did not differ between groups (p > 0.05). The patient group showed higher rates of halitosis when compared with the treatment and control groups (p < 0.001). Mouth breathing due to adenotonsillar hypertrophy caused various dentofacial changes and an increase in Class II division 1 malocclusion (p < 0.001). It was shown that adenotonsillar hypertrophy does not negatively affect OHRQoL, it could be a risk factor for dental caries, periodontal diseases, and halitosis, but by ensuring adequate oral health care, it is possible to maintain oral health in children with adenotonsillar hypertrophy. Also, it is recommended that orthodontic treatment should start as soon as possible if it is required. In this context, otorhinolaryngologists, pedodontists, and orthodontists should work as a team in the treatment of children with adenotonsillar hypertrophy.

This in vitro study evaluated the protective effect of titanium tetrafluoride (TiF4) varnish and silver diamine fluoride (SDF) solution on the radiation-induced dentin caries. Bovine root dentin samples were irradiated (70 Gy) and treated as follows: (6 h): 4% TiF4 varnish; 5.42% NaF varnish; 30% SDF solution; placebo varnish; or untreated (negative control). Microcosm biofilm was produced from human dental biofilm (from patients with head-neck cancer) mixed with McBain saliva for the first 8 h. After 16 h and from day 2 to day 5, McBain saliva (0.2% sucrose) was replaced daily (37 °C, 5% CO2) (biological triplicate). Demineralization was quantified by transverse microradiography (TMR), while biofilm was analyzed by using viability, colony-forming units (CFU) counting and lactic acid production assays. The data were statistically analyzed by ANOVA (p < 0.05). TiF4 and SDF were able to reduce mineral loss compared to placebo and the negative control. TiF4 and SDF significantly reduced the biofilm viability compared to negative control. TiF4 significantly reduced the CFU count of total microorganism, while only SDF affected total streptococci and mutans streptococci counts. The varnishes induced a reduction in lactic acid production compared to the negative control. TiF4 and SDF may be good alternatives to control the development of radiation-induced dentin caries.

Ante esta situación de la pandemia por el COVID-19, los odontólogos tienen un papel importante para detectar y apoyar en el diagnóstico temprano, dado que se están reportando efectos que esta infección ocasiona en la cavidad oral y que se relacionan con el inicio de este proceso infeccioso. Estos efectos se pueden relacionar con la presencia del virus SARS-CoV-2 o con las formas de los tratamientos que se le brinda al paciente, que van en desmedro de la salud oral de los pacientes. El objetivo de esta revisión es informar sobre las repercusiones que se pueden dar en la cavidad oral por la infección con COVID-19.


Faced with this situation of the COVID- 19 pandemic, dentists play an important role in detecting and supporting early diagnosis, since effects that this infection causes in the oral cavity and that are related to the onset are being reported. of this infectious process. These effects can be related to the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus or to the forms of treatments that are given to the patient, which are detrimental to the oral health of patients. The objective of this review is to inform about the repercussions that can occur in the oral cavity due to infection with COVID-19.

La caries es la enfermedad crónica más prevalente en niños constituyendo un problema de salud pública a nivel mundial. El objetivo de este estudio fue determinar la prevalencia y severidad de caries en niños y niñas pertenecientes al Programa de Salud Oral asociado a escuelas de la Junta Nacional de Auxilio Escolar y Becas (JUNAEB). Se realizó un estudio de corte trasversal basado en datos del año 2015 del Sistema Informático del Programa de Salud Oral de JUNAEB. Las variables de estudio fueron presencia y severidad de caries (índices ceod y COPD) y las variables de asociación exploratorias fueron zona geográfica, provincias, sexo, tipo de dependencia administrativa del colegio, tipo de enseñanza, sistema de salud, situación de extrema pobreza, tipo de dentición y tipo de atención. La asociación independiente entre las variables se analizó mediante el test de Chi2 y t-test. La muestra quedó constituida por 162.116 individuos, siendo el 50 % mujeres. La población estudiada mostró una prevalencia de 49 % y un índice ceod y COPD de 2,48 y 1,55 respectivamente. La mayor prevalencia (63 %) fue la zona centro sur y la región del Bío-Bío mostró los mayores índices de severidad (p<0,001). Las asociaciones más significativas fueron entre caries y el nivel socioeconómico y zona geográfica (p<0,001). Este estudio evidencia la asociación de la prevalencia/ severidad de caries y el nivel socioeconómico, y la distribución geográfica de la caries; lo cual hace necesario implementar medidas preventivas que compensen la ruralidad o la falta de fluoración del agua en algunas zonas geográficas de pobreza extrema.


Caries is the most prevalent chronic disease in children, constituting a worldwide public health problem. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and severity of caries in children included in the Oral Health Program associated to schools of the National Board of School Aid and Scholarships (JUNAEB). A cross- sectional study based on data from 2015 electronic register JUNAEB Oral Health Program was carried out. The main variables studied were presence and severity of caries (dmft and DMFT indices) and association variables were geographical area, sex, type of administrative dependency of the school, type of education, health system, and situation of extreme poverty, type of teething and type of care. The independent association between the variables was analyzed using the Chi2 test and the t-test.The sample consisted of 162,116 individuals, 50 % being women. The studied population showed a prevalence of 49 % and a CEOD and COPD index of 2.48 and 1.55, respectively. The highest prevalence (63 %) was the south-central zone and the Bío- Bío region showed the highest severity indices (p <0.001). The most significant associations were between caries and socioeconomic level and geographic area (p <0.001). This study shows the association between caries prevalence / severity and socioeconomic level, and the geographical distribution of caries, which make necessary the implementation of preventive measures that compensate rurality, or the lack of water fluoridation in some areas of extreme poverty.
