RESUMO

The deep ocean is the last natural biodiversity refuge from the reach of human activities. Deepwater sharks and rays are among the most sensitive marine vertebrates to overexploitation. One-third of threatened deepwater sharks are targeted, and half the species targeted for the international liver-oil trade are threatened with extinction. Steep population declines cannot be easily reversed owing to long generation lengths, low recovery potentials, and the near absence of management. Depth and spatial limits to fishing activity could improve conservation when implemented alongside catch regulations, bycatch mitigation, and international trade regulation. Deepwater sharks and rays require immediate trade and fishing regulations to prevent irreversible defaunation and promote recovery of this threatened megafauna group.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer bone metastasis is closely associated with the bone microenvironment. Zuogui Pill (ZGP), a clinically approved formulation in China, effectively regulates the bone microenvironment for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. PURPOSE: Few reports have utilized the ZGP for bone metastasis models. This study investigated the intervention and bone-protective properties of ZGP against breast cancer bone metastasis, explored the potential mechanism, and screened for its active compositions by molecules fishing. METHODS: To investigate the intervention efficacy of ZGP and its protein-level mechanism of action, the mouse bone metastasis model and in vitro cell co-culture model were constructed. Affinity ultrafiltration, molecular docking, cellular thermal shift assay and physical scale detection were used to investigate the affinity components of the RANKL protein in ZGP. RESULTS: The administration of ZGP combined with zoledronic acid inhibited the development of tumors and secondary lung metastasis in mice. This translated to a prolonged survival period and enhanced quality of life. ZGP could disrupt the malignant cycle by modulating the Piezo1-Notch-1-GPX4 signaling pathway in the "bone-cancer" communication in the cell co-culture model. Furthermore, 25 chemical components of ZGP were identified, with 10 active compounds exhibiting significant affinity for the RANKL protein. CONCLUSION: The findings of this work highlighted ZGP's potential for intervening in the progression of breast cancer bone metastasis. Thus, this investigation served as an experimental foundation for expanding the application scope of ZGP and for advancing drug development efforts in bone metastasis treatment.

Bottom trawling can significantly affect benthic communities, directly through immediate removal of sessile organisms and indirectly through sediment resuspension. Submarine canyons, often surrounded by fishing grounds, are important habitats for cold-water corals (CWC). Vulnerability of CWCs to increased suspended sediment concentration (SSC) is key to understanding the severity of bottom trawling effects on those communities. Here we show survival, growth, and physiological response of six CWCs from a Mediterranean submarine canyon (Dendrophyllia cornigera, Desmophyllum dianthus, Desmophyllum pertusum, Madrepora oculata, Leiopathes glaberrima and Muriceides lepida), exposed to a long-term, aquarium-based sedimentary disturbance experiment. Compared to cup coral and octocoral, which did not exhibit symptoms of distress, our data indicate that colonial scleractinian corals and black coral, which experienced substantial polyp mortality in enhanced SSC treatments, are more vulnerable. Indirect impact of bottom trawling could thus contribute to structural simplification of CWC communities posing an additional stressor alongside with global climate change.

The discovery of protein-protein interactions can provide crucial information on protein function by linking proteins into known pathways or complexes within the cell. Mass spectrometry (MS)-based methods, such as affinity purification (AP)-MS and proximity-dependent biotin identification (BioID), allowed for a vast increase in the number of reported protein complexes. As a more recent addition to the arsenal of MS-based methods, Virotrap represents a unique technology that benefits from the specific properties of the human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) Gag polyprotein. More specifically, Virotrap captures protein complexes in virus-like particles budded from human embryonic kidney (HEK293T) cells, bypassing the need for cell lysis and thus supporting identification of their content using MS. Being intrinsically different to its two main predecessors, affinity purification MS (AP-MS) and biotin-dependent identification (BioID), Virotrap was shown to complement data obtained with the existing MS-based toolkit. The proven complementarity of these MS-based strategies underlines the importance of using different techniques to enable comprehensive mapping of protein-protein interactions (PPIs). In this chapter, we provide a detailed overview of the Virotrap protocol to screen for PPIs using a bait protein of interest.

Introduction: Small-scale fishing is responsible for at least 40% of the fish consumed in the world. In Brazil, the worker in this sector is the artisanal fisherman, who accounts for one in every 200 Brazilians. Artisanal fishing is part of the informal economy; therefore, the pathologies that affect these fishermen are invisible in the country's official statistics. Musculoskeletal disorders represent a major socioeconomic and public health problem, but their prevalence is little known among non-formal workers. Objective: to estimate the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) in the lower limbs and to verify the associated factors among artisanal fishermen/ fisherwomen from Saubara, Bahia, Brazil. Methodology: a cross-sectional study, using the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ), the Brazilian version of the Job Content Questionnaire (JCQ) and a questionnaire about physical demands, were used to collect information in a random sample of artisanal fishermen/shellfish gatherers, in 2013. Results: the prevalence of MSDs in lower limbs in the sample was 65.5% (n=137). The prevalence of MSDs in the thigh/knee segment, leg and ankle/foot were 48.7% (n=92), 47.7% (n=95) and 38.1% (n=72), respectively. There was also a high frequency of obesity, poor education, low wages, early age at onset of labor, and excessive workload. Factors such as age, smoking, physical demands, working time, absence of breaks and having had a previous job were associated with MSDs in the lower limbs. Conclusion: the high prevalence of MSDs in lower limbs in female artisanal fishermen indicates the need to develop strategies for prevention, diagnosis and reporting of these diseases.


Introdução: a pesca em pequena escala é responsável por pelo menos 40% do pescado consumido no mundo e, no Brasil, o trabalhador desse setor é o pescador artesanal, que contabiliza um a cada 200 brasileiros. Por se tratar de uma atividade da economia informal, as patologias que afetam esses pescadores são praticamente invisíveis nas estatísticas oficiais do país. Nesse contexto, os distúrbios musculoesqueléticos representam um grande problema socioeconômico e de saúde pública, mas sua prevalência é pouco conhecida entre trabalhadores não formais. Objetivo: estimar a prevalência de distúrbios musculoesqueléticos nos membros inferiores e fatores associados, em pescadores artesanais/marisqueiras de Saubara, Bahia, Brasil. Metodologia: trata-se de um estudo transversal, utilizando o Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire, a versão brasileira do Job Content Questionnaire e um questionário sobre demandas físicas, para a coleta de informações em uma amostra aleatória de pescadores artesanais/marisqueiras, ocorrida em 2013. Resultados: a prevalência de distúrbios musculoesqueléticos em membros inferiores na amostra foi de 65,5% (n=137); a prevalência no segmento coxa/joelho, perna e tornozelo/pé foi de 48,7% (n=92), 47,7% (n=95) e 38,1% (n=72), respectivamente. Observaram-se também alta frequência de obesidade, baixa escolaridade, baixos salários, idade precoce para o início do trabalho e carga horária excessiva. Fatores como idade, tabagismo, demandas físicas, tempo de trabalho, ausência de pausas e trabalho anterior, estavam associados aos referidos distúrbios. Conclusão: A alta prevalência de distúrbios musculoesqueléticos dos membros inferiores em pescadoras artesanais indica a necessidade de desenvolver estratégias de prevenção, diagnóstico e notificação dessas doenças

Nylon fishing nets have excellent strength and durability, but when lost at sea, their insufficient decomposition destroys habitats and spawning grounds, and pollutes the marine environment. This led to the development of poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) resin for biodegradable fishing gear based on aliphatic fibers. Prompted by the low stiffness and elastic recovery of PBS, we introduced two additional components into the molecular structure of PBS: adipic acid and ethylene glycol. These two new components were combined with succinic acid and 1,4-butanediol, the existing components of PBS, to synthesize poly(butylene adipate-co-butylene succinate-co-ethylene adipate-co-ethylene succinate) (PBEAS) resin via esterification and polycondensation reactions of a quaternary aliphatic copolyester. Although the molecular weight and molecular weight distribution of PBEAS are similar to those of PBS, it has excellent tensile strength, stiffness, elastic recovery, and biodegradability, with a low melting point for good production efficiency. These improvements are expected to allow PBEAS resin to be applied to gill nets for fish that require high stiffness, thereby expanding the use of biodegradable fishing gear.

Purpose: Indian fishermen belong to a marginalized population and are continuously exposed to extreme occupational hazards and sunlight. A high prevalence of visual impairment (VI) is reported in the coastal fishing community. We aimed to investigate the association between VI and sunlight exposure measurement (SEM). Methods: In this cross-sectional observational study, 270 eyes of 135 participants were enrolled from a coastal fishing village. Participants underwent a comprehensive ophthalmic examination, which included best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), and anterior and posterior segment examination. Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) and SEM questionnaire were administered to estimate the level of dry eye and ultraviolet-B (UV-B) exposure, respectively. VI was defined as presenting visual acuity worse than 6/12 (logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution [logMAR] > 0.3). Results: The mean age and spherical equivalent were 50.56 ± 11.72 years (range: 18-80 years) and 0.36 ± 1.68 diopters (D) (range: -7.0 to +3.0 D), respectively. Age, SEM, OSDI, fishing as an occupation, and cataract were significantly associated with higher odds of VI in univariate analysis. Refraction, gender, education level, smoking status, amblyopia, systematic, and other ocular diseases were not significantly associated with VI. In the multivariate analysis, age, SEM, and presence of cataract remained significantly associated with a higher risk for VI. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve values for age and SEM scores demonstrate a fair index of discrimination for the detection of VI. Conclusion: SEM level is directly associated with a higher risk of VI among fishermen. The fishing community might benefit from regular eye examinations and awareness about the harmful effects of sunlight exposure and preventive measures.

BACKGROUND: Infants born to HIV-infected mothers are at a high risk of acquiring the infection. The World Health Organization recommends early diagnosis of HIV-exposed infants (HEIs) through deoxyribonucleic acid polymerase chain reaction (DNA PCR) and rapid HIV testing. Early detection of paediatric HIV is critical for access to antiretroviral therapy (ART) and child survival. However, there is limited evidence of the factors associated with receiving early infant diagnosis (EID) tests of the HIV testing protocol among HEIs in fishing communities in Uganda. This study established the factors associated with receiving EID tests of the HIV testing protocol among HEIs in a hard-to-reach fishing community in Uganda. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among HEIs in selected healthcare facilities in Buvuma islands, Buvuma district. We obtained secondary data from mother-infant pair files enrolled in the EID program using a data extraction tool. Data were analysed using STATA Version 14. A modified Poisson regression analysis was used to determine the factors associated with not receiving the 1st DNA PCR test among HEIs enrolled in care. RESULTS: None of the HEIs had received all the EID tests prescribed by the HIV testing protocol within the recommended time frame for the period of January 2014-December 2016. The proportion of infants that had received the 1st and 2nd DNA PCR, and rapid HIV tests was 39.5%, 6.1%, and 81.0% respectively. Being under the care of a single mother (PR = 1.11, 95% CI: 1.01-1.23, p = 0.023) and cessation of breastfeeding (PR = 0.90, 95% CI: 0.83-0.98, p = 0.025) were significantly associated with not receiving the 1st DNA PCR. CONCLUSION: Our study revealed that none of the HEIs had received all the EID tests of the HIV diagnosis testing protocol. Receiving the 1st DNA PCR was positively associated with being an infant born to a single mother, and exclusive breastfeeding. Our findings highlight the need for the creation of an enabling environment for mothers and caregivers in order to increase the uptake of early diagnosis services for HEIs. Awareness-raising on the importance of EID should be scaled up in fishing communities. Demographic characteristics such as marital and breastfeeding status should be used as an entry point to increase the proportion of HEIs who receive EID tests.

INTRODUCTION: We have previously described negative energy balance (ie, -9.7±3.4 MJ/d) and weight loss (Δ-1.5 ± 0.7 kg) influenced by high levels of energy expenditure (ie, 17.4±2.6 MJ/d) during remote expeditionary hunting in Alaska. Despite negative energy balance, participants retained skeletal muscle. The purpose of this pilot study was to measure skeletal muscle protein synthesis and examine molecular markers of skeletal muscle protein metabolism under similar conditions of physical and nutrient stress. METHODS: The "virtual biopsy method" was used to evaluate integrated fractional synthetic rates (FSRs) of muscle protein from blood samples in 4 participants. Muscle biopsies were taken to measure molecular markers of muscle protein kinetics (ie, FSTL1, MEF2, MYOD1, B2M, and miR-1-3p, -206, -208b, 23a, and 499a) using real-time polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS: Our findings in 4 participants (2 females [28 and 62 y of age; 66.2 and 71.8 kg body weight; 25.5 and 26.7 kg/m2 body mass index] and 2 males [47 and 56 y of age; 87.5 and 91.4 kg body weight; 26.1 and 28.3 kg/m2 body mass index]) describe mean muscle FSRs of serum carbonic anhydrase (2.4%) and creatine kinase M-type (4.0%) and positive increments in molecular regulation. CONCLUSIONS: Preservation of skeletal muscle under conditions of physical and nutrient stress seems to be supported by positive inflection of skeletal muscle FSR and molecular activation.

Dissolved heavy metal pollution in the ocean is one of the most severe environmental concerns; however, the potential sources of heavy metals and the resulting health risks are not fully understood. To explore the distribution characteristics, source apportionment, and health risks of dissolved heavy metals (As, Cd, Cu, Hg, Pb, and Zn) in the Zhoushan fishing ground, this study analyzed heavy metals in surface seawater during the wet and dry seasons. The concentrations of heavy metals varied greatly between seasons, and the mean concentration in the wet season was generally higher than that in the dry season. A positive matrix factorization model coupled with correlation analysis was applied to identify promising sources of heavy metals. Four potential sources (agricultural, industrial, traffic, atmospheric deposition, and natural sources) were identified as the determinants of the accumulation of heavy metals. The health risk assessment results revealed that non-carcinogenic risk (NCR) for adults and children were acceptable (HI < 1), and carcinogenic risk (CR) were at a low level (1 × 10-6 < TCR ≤ 1 × 10-4). The source-oriented risk assessment indicated that industrial and traffic sources were the main sources of pollution, contributing 40.7 % of NCR and 27.4 % of CR, respectively. This study proposes forming reasonable, effective policies to control industrial pollution and improve the ecological environment of Zhoushan fishing grounds.

An 82-year-old woman with a medical history of dementia was admitted to the emergency department with a line under tension by lead weights through her mouth, suspecting inadvertent swallowing of a fishhook. The chest X-ray was normal. An emergent endoscopy revealed the hook imprisoned in the middle esophagus. The sharped end of the hook was carefully detached into the esophageal lumen using a rat tooth forceps and safely removed with an esophageal overtube. The esophageal defect at the impaction site was closed with the placement of two 11-mm through-the-scope metal clips, without intercurrences. Ingestion of foreign bodies is relatively rare in adults and typically pass without intervention. Their extraction is a therapeutic challenge dependent on the type and location of the object, the time since ingestion, and the probability of associated complications, such as obstruction or perforation. Endoscopic management is the first choice in the treatment of esophageal foreign bodies as a safe, effective, and minimally invasive technique, as it allows to maintain control of the object during extraction and minimize the risk of additional damage. This case report represents a successful retrieval of an unusual foreign body specially designed in a sharped shape to be ingested by fish during fishing with an esophageal overtube avoiding surgery with significant morbidity and mortality.

BACKGROUND: Hunting requires the use of various weapons or tools as professionals according to the characteristics of the creature to be hunted. Deaths during hunting activities may occur as a result of different reasons (firearm wounds, falling from a height, wild animal attack, or natural, etc.). These events' forensic reports are prepared by the physician who performed the first intervention. Identification of wounds, taking measurement photographs of the wounds before treatment, specifying the shape/sizes of foreign bodies in radiological imaging will be beneficial for determining the type of firearm, the number of shots, and the shooting distance. METHODS: The cases that performed autopsy between 2007 and 2016 at The Council of Forensic Medicine Trabzon Group Chairmanship were analyzed, retrospectively. Twenty-six (4.1%) deceased were examined. Crime scene investigation reports, hunting equipment, wound characteristics, and causes of death were investigated. RESULTS: All of our cases consisted of men (92.3%; n=24) with a mean age of 42.5 years (14-81; SD: ± 17.4). It was determined that 42.3% of the incidents occurred in winter, 80.8% (n=21) occurred in the daytime, 69.2% occurred in open areas such as fields, and 26.9% occurred in forested land. It was found that 88.5% of the deaths were caused by shotgun pellet/buckshot injuries, 7.7% (n=2) by falling off a cliff, and 3.8% by wild boar attacks (vascular injury). It was determined that 57.7% of the shots were made from long shooting distance, 19.2% were made from close range, and 11.5% were made from contact distance. It was found that 73.9% of the perpetrators were other hunters and 26.1% were the deceased person himself. It was determined that 42.3% of the injuries occurred in the chest and 38.4% in the head-and-neck region. It was determined that 96.2% of the cases did not undergo first aid intervention even though there were eyewitnesses in approximately ¾ of the cases. Ethyl alcohol was detected in only 3 cases (11.5%). CONCLUSION: It is thought that similar deaths can be prevented to a certain extent thanks to the hunting and medical first aid training to be given by the local governments. Risk control mechanisms must work properly. Besides, it is necessary to ensure that forensic experts can access the results of the proceedings in such cases. It is thought that this will be more beneficial in terms of developing new behavior styles in similar events.

We examined catch compositions and vulnerability of target and bycatch species in two fishing gears, namely the bottom-set gillnet and collapsible crab trap, used in small-scale fisheries of Bandon Bay, Suratthani Province, Thailand. Both gears mainly target the blue swimming crab (BSC) Portunus pelagicus, and together contribute about half of Thailand's annual BSC catch of around 2.5 thousand tonnes. Field sampling was conducted from January to November of 2018. Specimens from bottom-set gillnets and collapsible crab traps comprised 111 and 118 taxa, respectively. Of these, 26 and 27 crab species and 41 and 46 fish species were collected by gillnets and traps, respectively. The index of relative importance of BSC was higher in gillnets (48.8 ± 16.6%) than in traps (25.0 ± 15.5%), where another swimming crab (Charybdis affinis) was more common. Cluster analysis revealed that catch compositions were seasonal and differed between the two monsoonal seasons, i.e., northeast monsoon (October to February) and southwest monsoon (May to September), and the transition period (March and April). Potential impact from both fishing gears on various stocks was assessed by standard productivity and susceptibility analysis (PSA). Vulnerability scores of the BSC stock as the main target species suggested it was at moderate risk, as assessed by PSA. The impacts of both gears to stocks of the other species in Bandon Bay showed either low or moderate risk. Ten fish stocks, including two stingrays, six species of sole and two other bony fishes, were near the threshold of high risk from gillnet fishing.

Bullet fragments have been previously observed in the remains and edible portions of big game animals that were harvested using rifles. The fragmentation issue has attracted attention because traditional hunting bullets are more than 70% lead, which is toxic to humans and scavengers in the ecosystem. We prepared gunshot wounds in ballistic gelatin blocks, and then applied synchrotron X-ray imaging technology to the bullet fragmentation process for the first time. The K edge subtraction (KES) imaging method allowed a clear separation of lead in an image from false positives, including the other major bullet component, copper, and non-lead objects such as bone fragments. The superior brightness of synchrotron radiation was also harnessed to resolve thousands of embedded sub-10 µm fragments, a size range not previously observed using commonly applied X-ray imaging modalities. The results challenge the current understanding of the maximum extent that fragments may be distributed, and the effectiveness of imaging methods used to screen wild game donations at food banks for lead bullet fragments.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were analyzed in a variety of coastal marine seafood from the Wentai fishing area, which is in proximity to highly urbanized areas and provides a significant portion of the marine aquatic products in Eastern China. Specifically, total PAHs ranged from 320 to 2500 ng/g d.w., whereas carcinogenic PAHs ranged from 21 to 92 ng/g d.w. According to the source diagnosis, the PAHs in the seafood were generally from sources highly related to fossil fuel. Thus, it is necessary to control the unintentional use of fossil fuels and optimize the energy structure in the terrestrial area nearby. Moreover, the food chain structure and the environmental behavior of PAHs through the food chain, which are relevant to dietary risk, were assessed. The δ15N values fell in a narrow range, which indicates a relatively short food chain, which is due to overfishing in this area. Furthermore, in this shortened food chain, the trophic magnification factors (TMFs) ranged from 0.23 to 6.6, which were generally higher than those in more complex food chains. The cancer risk (ILCR) ranged from 2.2 × 10-8 to 2.2 × 10-6. It is noted that the carcinogenic risk of consuming yellow croaker, which is one of the most popular seafood among people on the east coast of China, was the highest. In conclusion, trophic magnification implied a possible elevated risk through this marine food chain, and overfishing may have increased the uncertainty associated with TMF estimations.

The study evaluated the nutritional quality in muscle tissues of nine commercially important marine fish species. And the concentrations of trace metals (i.e. As, Hg, Cu, Pb, Cr, Cd and Zn) in the muscles (edible part) and tissues (gill and liver) of fishes caught from Dachen fishing ground, the coast of Zhejiang Province, East China Sea, were determined, and the values of target hazard quotient (THQ) and the carcinogenic risk (TR) were calculated for assessing human health risk. Significant differences(P < 0.05) were observed in the proximate chemical composition of fish muscles in these species. The muscle protein content of fish species ranged from 12.36 to 23.41%. The muscle lipid content of fishes ranged from 0.48 to 2.54%. The accumulation capacity of heavy metals (except Cr) in livers and gills was higher than that in muscles. In addition, the accumulation ability of most fishes is related to the water layer they live, the fishes living in the demersal layer showed more accumulation of heavy metals than the middle-upper layer(except Cu). Estimated daily intake (EDI), target hazard quotient (THQ), hazard index (HI) and the carcinogenic risk (TR) assessed for potential human health risk implications suggest that the values were within the acceptable threshold for human. However, the carcinogenic risk(TR) of As and Cr was close to the critical limit (10-4). Therefore, in order to ensure the health and safety of human consumption, the continuous monitoring of heavy metals in Dachen fishing ground area is suggested.

Abandoned, lost, or discarded fishing gear (ALDFG) is considered a major threat to ocean biodiversity. Yet, little is known of the interactive impacts of ALDFGs and urban nearshore biodiversity and habitats, especially in Southeast Asia where fisheries efforts are increasing. We identified ALDFG hotspots around Singapore-where 80% of coastal areas are urbanized or anthropogenically modified. Fishing lines and nets were the most common ALDFGs recovered; with strong correlations between ALDFG presence and beaches, intertidal, mangroves, as well as sites with significant coastal modifications. Plastic polymer nets trapped the highest organism diversity and abundance. A total of 1052 trapped individuals comprising 124 species were recovered, the majority in classes Merostomata, Actinopterygii and Malacostraca. The most abundant trapped species was Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda and the highest mortality presentation was in Class Actinopterygii. This study demonstrates that ALDFGs remain a threat to marine biodiversity within urban coastal habitats and at heavily modified shorelines.

Exposure to mercury (Hg) and pesticides (o.p'DDT, p.p'DDT, o.p'DDE, and p.p'DDE) in the Amazon through eating fish is of concern due to the large participation of this food in the diet of traditional fishing communities. The aim of this study was to evaluate the estimated daily intake (EDI) and the incremental lifetime cancer risk associated with Hg and o.p'DDT, p.p'DDT, o.p'DDE, and p.p'DDE in an Amazonian community. The results showed that for Hg, the EDI from carnivorous and detritivorous fish had the highest values, while for pesticides, the EDI from detritivorous fish intake had the highest value. The incremental lifetime cancer risk was below the permitted limit. A recommendation for controlling the high risk of exposure includes the reduction of detritivorous fish ingestion and/or replacement with herbivorous fish, which had lower EDI. We highlight the importance of investigating the human dietary patterns when estimating risk of exposure to Hg and pesticides.

The present investigation focuses on Boops boops specimens gathered in the Gulf of Patti in 2010. Providing a snapshot from the past, this paper represents, chronologically, the first record of microplastic ingestion in the Mediterranean bogue. The plastic abundance and composition in gastrointestinal tracts of the bogue was assess, in order to improve the knowledge on spatial-temporal variability of microplastics pollution in the Mediterranean basin and in particular, in the southern Tyrrhenian Sea. In a total of 65 specimens, 180 particles of plastic (2.8 items/specimens), mainly belonging to microplastics class, were found. Fragments (63%) and fibres (30%) were the predominant shape categories. Eleven polymers were identified: polypropylene and polyethylene were the most abundant. Several synthetic polymers belonging to the class of elastomers were also observed. The study area is strongly influenced by the absence of trawl fishing activities and a low mixing level of the seabed that, together with the confluence of different watercourses and the presence of different kind of anthropic impact, including motorway, could make it a 'waste disposal site'. Finally, our results suggest the usefulness to retrieve older samples to better understand spatial-temporal changes in marine litter pollution over time.
