BACKGROUND: Infection with the protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii is widely prevalent in animals and humans. In goats and sheep this infection has a high economic impact as it causes abortions and lamb losses. Although there are several studies reporting seroprevalence in small ruminants in Iran, molecular-based information is scarce. PURPOSE: This study aimed to screen caprine and ovine aborted fetuses for T. gondii infection by PCR and histopathology. METHODS: Brains of 121 aborted fetuses (10 caprine and 111 ovine) were collected from different parts of the Kordestan province, bordering with Iraq. Gestational age and the general status of each fetus such as freshness, autolysis, mummification and presence of macroscopic lesions in the fetus and foetal membranes was recorded. Individual brain tissues of fetuses were subjected to nested-PCR targeting the B1 gene, and histopathological sections prepared from brains were examined microscopically. RESULTS: PCR results revealed T. gondii-associated abortion in one caprine and nine ovine fetuses (8.3%). Microscopically, pathological lesions included non-purulent meningitis associated with gliosis, focal necrosis, and occasionally tissue cyst. CONCLUSION: This paper reports for the first time T. gondii-associated abortion in goats in Iran. As organs from aborted fetuses do not necessarily show lesions, molecular confirmation is the unique diagnostic method and should be used in situations of an abortion epidemic.

Endogenous transplacental transmission, which occurs during pregnancy as the result of reactivation of a latent infection in the dam, is the main mechanism of propagation of Neospora caninum within cattle herds. However, the importance of this propagation mechanism has not yet been evaluated in relation to ovine neosporosis. In this study, involving three generations of ewes naturally infected by N. caninum, we demonstrated that endogenous transplacental transmission may also be highly efficient in the ovine host since transmission of infection occurred in 96.6% of gestations and the congenital infection rate ranged between 66.7 and 93%. Nevertheless, parasite burdens decreased gradually in consecutive generations. Reactivation of latent infections had a strong impact on the pregnancy outcome, with high mortality rates recorded in the offspring of the two first generations of ewes (21.4-46.1%). Histological examination of the brain revealed that all aborted foetuses had characteristic lesions of neosporosis (necrotic glial foci) and a few parasite cysts, whereas most stillborn and newborn lambs that died shortly after birth had non-specific lesions (mild glial foci without necrosis) and parasite cysts were more frequent. Microsatellite analysis revealed scarce genetic variability in the N. caninum population, in accordance with a scenario in which infections were of a single origin and were exclusively maintained by clonal propagation through endogenous transplacental transmission.

Neospora caninum is a tissue cyst-forming coccidium capable of causing spinal cord or skeletal muscle disease in dogs. Infected bitches can transmit the parasite to their pups in utero. Seroprevalence of N. caninum was studied in naturally-infected, privately owned Bernese Mountain dogs, using antibody detection via an indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT) to identify infected individuals. A retrospective study was undertaken on available dogs from 14 litters. Five of eight dams tested seropositive. The index case was a bitch with a titre of 1:3200 by IFAT. Only one offspring from her first litter was seropositive. The frequency of putative congenital transmission in the breeding kennel was variable. Our results reiterate the importance of serological testing of all dams and littermates in a breeding kennel when clinical neosporosis is suspected in neonatal puppies.

The aim of this study is to report an episode of reproductive losses due to toxoplasmosis in a sheep flock in Argentina. A total of 15 abortions and 9 stillbirths were recorded in a flock of 190 Texel ewes. The affected ewes were more likely to be seropositive for Toxoplasma gondii (15/24) than ewes that delivered normal lambs (5/34, OR=9.6, 95%CI=2.7-34.0, p=0.0004). A pair of aborted twins was recovered for diagnostic investigation. One of these fetuses and its dam were seropositive for T. gondii. Histological examination of the two fetuses revealed non-suppurative myocarditis and epicarditis, portal hepatitis and multifocal necrotizing encephalitis with protozoal cysts in the brain. T. gondii was detected intralesionally by immunohistochemistry in one fetus and by PCR in both. Further investigations are necessary to evaluate the economic losses due to T. gondii in the Argentinean ovine industry.

Neospora caninum is a cyst-forming coccidian which causes abortion in cattle, with a high economic impact globally. Vaccination is considered to be the most cost-effective strategy to control and prevent bovine neosporosis. However, there is no commercial vaccine available to date. To investigate this disease under laboratory conditions, mouse models were developed, and they have been efficiently used as an initial proof-of-concept platform to investigate different immunogenic formulations. We here provide a detailed review on the current knowledge on immunity against neosporosis in non-pregnant as well as pregnant mice, and present a general overview of the most relevant parameters that may be responsible for protective immunity, which in turn could be relevant for vaccine development. Despite the considerable differences in immunity between cattle and mice, it is essential to understand how mice respond immunologically to Neospora caninum infection and how this response influences congenital infection and offspring survival. In this context, pregnant mouse models play a key role, and allow correlation of the outcome of congenital neosporosis with specific immune mechanisms which could also be relevant in cattle.

The cyst-forming protozoan parasite Neospora caninum is one of the main causes of bovine abortion worldwide and is of great economic importance in the cattle industry. Recent studies have revealed extensive genetic variation among N. caninum isolates based on multilocus microsatellite genotyping. Currently, the most extensive study reported is based on the N. caninum genotyping of 96 samples from four countries on two continents (Spain, Argentina, Germany and Scotland) that demonstrate different clusters of multilocus genotypes (MLGs) implicated in cattle abortions as well as the population sub-structuring of N. caninum, which is partially associated with the geographical origin. The aim of this study was to genotype N. caninum from aborted bovine foetuses that originated from Mexico within the region of Aguascalientes and to investigate their genetic diversity. Parasite DNA was detected in 27 out of the 63 analysed foetuses recovered from 10 different herds. Complete or nearly complete profiles based on 9 microsatellite markers were obtained from 11 samples. Diverse N. caninum MLGs were implicated in the occurrence of abortion in each herd. All of the Mexican MLGs differed from the MLGs previously determined for the Argentinean, Spanish, German and Scottish N. caninum populations. The Mexican MLGs failed to cluster by eBURST analyses. The MLG relationships using PCoA showed a close genetic relationship between the Spanish population and a portion of the Mexican population, but a more distant genetic relationship with the Argentinean genotypes. These results demonstrate the genetic diversity of N. caninum in the studied areas that differed from other populations of N. caninum around the world.

The study was designed to determine the effect of Trypanosoma evansi infection on some pregnancy biomarkers of Yankasa ewes (YE). Twenty pregnant YE were assigned into 3 groups (A, B and C) comprising 7 ewes each in groups A and B, while group C comprise 6 YE. Groups A and B were each inoculated with blood containing approximately 1.0 × 10(6) of T. evansi through the jugular vein on days 59 and 110 of pregnancy, representing second and third trimesters, respectively, while group C served as the uninfected control. Progesterone (P4) and pregnancy specific protein-B (PSPB) of YE in group A were significantly (p < 0.05) high at weeks 4 and 12 post infection (pi) respectively, while there was no significant (p > 0.05) difference in P4 and PSPB of YE in groups B. Estrone sulfate (E1S) significantly (p < 0.05) decrease for YE in group A at weeks 2 and 11 pi. However, it was not significantly (p > 0.05) different in group B. Cortisol concentration of YE in group A was significantly (p < 0.05) decreased at week 12 pi. Conversely, the cortisol concentration of YE in group B significantly (p < 0.05) increased at week 3 pi. There was no significant (p > 0.05) association among the pregnancy biomarkers of YE in groups A and B throughout the study, except between progesterone and cortisol in group B, which were significantly associated (r = 0.77, p < 0.05). It was therefore concluded that T. evansi infection affects pregnancy biomarkers more at mid pregnancy than at late pregnancy.

Besides its importance in cattle, Neospora caninum may also pose a high risk as abortifacient for small ruminants. We have recently demonstrated that the outcome of experimental infection of pregnant sheep with 10(6) Nc-Spain7 tachyzoites is strongly dependent on the time of gestation. In the current study, we assessed peripheral and local immune response in those animals. Serological analysis revealed earlier and higher IFN-γ and IgG responses in ewes infected at early (G1) and mid (G2) gestation, when abortion occurred. IL-4 was not detected in sera from any sheep. Inflammatory infiltrates in the placenta mainly consisted of CD8+ and, to a lesser extent, CD4+ T cells and macrophages (CD163+). The infiltrate was more intense in sheep infected at mid-gestation. In the foetal mesenchyme, mostly free tachyzoites were found in animals infected at G1, while those infected in G2 displayed predominantly particulate antigen, and parasitophorous vacuoles were detected in sheep infected at G3. A similar pattern of placental cytokine mRNA expression was found in all groups, displaying a strengthened upregulation of IFN-γ and IL-4 and milder increases of TNF-α and IL-10, reminiscent of a mixed Th1 and Th2 response. IL-12 and IL-6 were only slightly upregulated in G2, and TGF-ß was downregulated in G1 and G2, suggestive of limited T regulatory (Treg) cell activity. No significant expression of TLR2 or TLR4 could be detected. In summary, this study confirms the pivotal role of systemic and local immune responses at different times of gestation during N. caninum infection in sheep.

Neospora caninum is an intracellular coccidian parasite causing abortion worldwide in dairy cattle. Studies have shown that N caninum infection modifies endocrine patterns and that beef cows or cows with a crossbreed pregnancy, especially for a greater maternal-paternal genetic distance, show a reduced risk of abortion when naturally infected compared with pure-breed Holstein Friesian (HF) pregnancies. This study examined the effects of crossbreeding on plasma progesterone (P4), pregnancy-associated glycoprotein (PAG)-1 and -2, and prolactin patterns produced during gestation in N caninum-infected beef/dairy cows. We analyzed 74 pregnancies in nonaborting cows carrying a single fetus established in 26 lactating HF cows bred with Holstein bulls (H-H), 13 HF cows bred with Limousin bulls (H-L), 12 HF cows used as recipients of transferred in vivo-produced frozen-thawed Rubia Gallega (beef breed; RG) embryos (H-RG-ET), and 23 RG suckling cows bred with RG bulls (RG-RG). Of the cows, 29 (39%) were seropositive for N caninum. Blood samples for hormone and placental protein determinations were collected on Days 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, and 180 of gestation. Procedures of repeated measures analysis of variance throughout gestation revealed higher PAG-1 levels in the H-L and H-RG-ET groups compared with H-H and RG-RG. Higher prolactin levels were detected in RG-RG than in the remaining groups. N caninum seropositivity and fetal genotype had a significant effect on PAG-2 concentrations, such that highest levels of PAG-2 occurred in RG-RG seropositive cows and lowest in H-H seropositive cows, whereas Neospora-seropositive cows showed lower P4 concentrations than their seronegative partners. In conclusion, chronic N caninum infection modifies endocrine patterns of PAG-2 and P4 during pregnancy, whereas PAG-1 and prolactin concentrations are affected by breed and fetal genotype, irrespective of Neospora infection status.

A near-full-term alpaca (Vicugna pacos) was stillborn 2 days before the expected date of delivery; necropsy examination was conducted within 6 hr of delivery. Gross lesions were enlarged liver and hydrocephalus. On histologic examination, mild inflammatory lesions were identified in the placenta, liver, and lungs, although no etiology was recognized. Within the brain, there was a mild nonsuppurative meningoencephalitis, hydrocephalus, and hydromyelia. Both kidneys had inflammatory foci in cortex and medulla associated with protozoal tissue cysts. Protozoa in brain and kidneys were identified as Toxoplasma gondii based on immunoreactivity to T. gondii polyclonal antibodies that stain both tachyzoites and tissue cysts and BAG1 T. gondii antibodies that are bradyzoite specific. The tissue cysts exhibited intense positivity to T. gondii and mild immunoreactivity to Neospora caninum antibodies. The dam had a high antibody titer (1 : 12,800) to T. gondii and low titer (1 : 100) to N. caninum using their respective agglutination tests. This is the first report of toxoplasmosis-associated abortion in alpaca.

In this study, transplacental transmission of Neospora caninum in bitches at different stages of pregnancy was evaluated. Three bitches were inoculated in the 3rd week and three in the 6th week of gestation with 10(8) tachyzoites of N. caninum (Nc-1 strain). All the infected bitches and at least one of their offspring presented anti-N. caninum antibodies according to the indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT > 400). The pups and their mothers were sacrificed and tissues from the central nervous system (CNS), popliteal lymph nodes, skeletal muscle, brain, lungs, heart and liver were analyzed for the presence of N. caninum using the nested polymerase chain reaction (nested PCR), restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) and immunohistochemistry (IHC). The parasite was found in the pups in lymph node, CNS, heart and liver tissues using nested PCR. There was no difference in perinatal mortality between the offspring from bitches infected in the 3rd week of gestation (60%) and in the 6th week (53.8%).


Neste estudo a transmissão transplacentária de Neospora caninum foi avaliada em fêmeas em diferentes estágios de gestação. Três cadelas foram inoculadas na 3ª semana e três na 6ª semana de gestação com 10(8) taquizoítos de N. caninum (cepa Nc-1). Todas as cadelas infectadas, e pelo menos um de seus filhotes, apresentaram anticorpos anti-N. caninum por imunofluorescência indireta (RIFI > 400). Os filhotes e suas mães foram sacrificados e tecidos de sistema nervoso central (SNC), linfonodo poplíteo, músculo esquelético, cérebro, pulmões, coração e fígado foram analisados para a presença de N. caninum pela reação em cadeia da polimerase (nested PCR), polimorfismo de comprimento de fragmentos de restrição (RFLP) e imunoistoquímica (IHQ). O parasita foi encontrado em filhotes em linfonodo, SNC, coração e fígado pela nested PCR. Mortalidade perinatal não apresentou diferença entre os filhotes das cadelas infectadas na 3ª semana (60%) ou na 6ª semana de gestação (53,8%).

Neospora caninum and Toxoplasma gondii are closely related cyst-forming apicomplexan parasites identified as important causes of reproductive failure in cattle and small ruminants, respectively. Protozoan abortion in small ruminants is traditionally associated with T. gondii, but the importance of N. caninum remains uncertain. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of N. caninum and T. gondii infections in abortion cases in small ruminants submitted for diagnosis. For this purpose, 74 ovine and 26 caprine aborted foetuses were recovered from different areas in Spain. Foetal histopathology was used to detect the presence of protozoal-associated lesions in brain. The presence of N. caninum and T. gondii was confirmed by PCR. Protozoal infection was detected in 17 out of 100 (17%) foetuses examined by at least one of the diagnostic techniques used. Lesions suggestive of protozoal infection were observed in 10.8% (8/74) and 15.4% (4/26) of the ovine and caprine abortions respectively. N. caninum and T. gondii infection was detected by PCR in 6.8% (5/74) and 5.4% (4/74) of sheep foetuses, respectively, of which five showed protozoal-associated lesions. N. caninum DNA was detected in 11.5% (3/26) of goat foetuses, of which two showed protozoal-associated lesions, whereas T. gondii DNA was detected in one goat foetus with no lesions. The simultaneous presence of N. caninum and T. gondii DNA was detected in one sheep foetus with severe lesions. This study demonstrates that N. caninum plays a significant role in abortion in small ruminants in the studied population. In addition, our results highlight the importance of differentiating between protozoa whenever characteristic lesions are observed.

Q fever is a zoonotic infection caused by Coxiella burnetii that is endemic worldwide. Domestic ruminants are a source of infection for humans. Given the suggestion that the bacterium recrudesces during pregnancy in cattle, this study was designed to determine whether C. burnetii infection affects hormonal patterns, such as progesterone, cortisol, pregnancy associated glycoproteins (PAG), and prolactin during gestation in lactating cows. Possible interactions with Neospora caninum were also explored. The study was performed on 58 gestating non-aborting cows. Blood samples for hormone determinations were collected on Days 40, 90, 120, 150, 180, and 210 of gestation. For antibody determinations, blood was collected at day 40 postinsemination and postpartum. By GLM repeated measures analysis of variance, we established the effects of production and reproductive variables as well as Coxiella and Neospora seropositivity related to changes on cortisol, PAG, progesterone, and prolactin levels. Coxiella antibody levels were significantly related to cortisol, PAG, and plasma progesterone concentrations, whereas Neospora seropositivity was linked to plasma progesterone concentrations. The interaction between Coxiella and Neospora seropositivity was correlated with cortisol and plasma progesterone levels, whereas the interaction seropositivity against C. burnetii-plasma cortisol concentration was related to plasma PAG levels. Finally, an effect of lactation number only was observed on plasma prolactin. Our findings suggest that both the N. caninum and C. burnetii infection or the presence of both modify endocrine patterns throughout gestation. Cows seropositive to both, Neospora and Coxiella, showed higher plasma progesterone levels than the remaining animals examined. Seropositivity to C. burnetii was associated with placental damage and diminishing PAG levels throughout the second half of gestation, along with increased plasma cortisol levels on Day 180 of gestation.

A young adult pregnant alpaca was presented with an acute episode of abdominal pain. Hematology revealed mild anemia, neutropenia with a degenerative left shift and moderate toxic changes in neutrophils, hyperfibrinogenemia, hypoproteinemia, and hypoalbuminemia. Abdominal ultrasound showed a small intestinal segment with severely increased wall thickness and collapsed lumen. Exploratory laparotomy revealed a markedly thickened 60cm jejunal segment with reddened serosa from which a full-thickness biopsy and samples for bacterial culture were obtained. Histopathology revealed severe coccidian enteropathy with secondary bacterial enteritis. Anaerobic culture yielded Clostridium perfringens, while fecal sugar flotation yielded Eimeria macusaniensis and Eimeria punoensis. The alpaca was treated with broad-spectrum antimicrobial drugs, sulfadimethoxine, and anti-inflammatory drugs. The alpaca made a gradual recovery and had a term pregnancy. This communication demonstrates the potential pathogenicity of E. macusaniensis in adult alpacas. Coccidian enteropathy should be considered in adult alpacas with gastrointestinal signs including acute abdominal pain and hypoproteinemia.

The aim of the present study was to investigate possible relationships between plasma concentrations of prolactin and the following factors throughout gestation in lactating dairy cows: photoperiod, season, milk production, Neospora caninum-seropositivity, twin pregnancy, and plasma concentrations of pregnancy associated glycoproteins-1 (PAG-1), progesterone and cortisol. Pregnancy was diagnosed by trans-rectal ultrasonography on Day 40 post-insemination and by palpation per rectum on Days 90, 120, 150, 180 and 210 or until abortion in aborting cows. Blood samples were collected from each animal immediately before each pregnancy diagnosis. The study population was comprised of 73 non-aborting (54 Neospora-seropositive cows) and 20 aborting cows (all Neospora-seropositive) cows. In non-aborting cows, GLM repeated measures of analysis of variance revealed that lactation number and days in milk had no effect on plasma prolactin concentrations throughout gestation, whereas high plasma prolactin concentrations were significantly associated with high plasma levels of cortisol and PAG-1, with Neospora-seropositivity, positive photoperiod (increasing day length), twin pregnancy, and with low plasma progesterone concentrations. An interaction among plasma prolactin, plasma cortisol and milk production was observed in that plasma prolactin concentrations differed significantly throughout gestation and were highest in high-producing cows with high cortisol levels. In Neospora-seropositive non-aborting versus aborting cows, mean prolactin concentrations failed to differ on Days 40, 90, 120, 150 and 180 of pregnancy, whereas prolactin values were significantly lower (P=0.03) in aborting animals on Day 210 of pregnancy. Our results indicate that a positive photoperiod and Neospora-infection lead to increased plasma prolactin concentrations throughout gestation. Reduced prolactin concentrations detected in Neospora-seropositive aborting cows compared to non-aborting animals suggests a protective effect of prolactin in N. caninum infection.

Neospora caninum has been described as an important cause of abortion in bovine worldwide. The objective of the present study was to characterize patterns of antibody dynamics during gestation in dairy cows naturally infected with N. caninum. Twelve N. caninum naturally infected cows were selected from four dairy herds from Brazil and blood samples were monthly collected during pregnancy. Serum were tested for antibodies against N. caninum by Indirect Fluorescent Antibody Test (IFAT). During this period, all cows remained clinically normal and gave birth to healthy calves. The cows remained seropositives during the study and N. caninum IFAT titers ranged from 100 to 12,800; only animal 234 presented one negative result in the first month of pregnancy. Significant differences of N. caninum IFAT titers were found between months from 1 to 9 of pregnancy bythe Friedman Test (P<0.001). The statistical analysis showed an increase of N. caninum antibody titers from second and third trimester of pregnancy in relation to first trimester. High titers were observed in few cows after month fifth of pregnancy. This study showed a variation of specific antibody levels in seropositive cows during different gestational periods. The highest values were observed during the second and third trimester. The antibody increase after the fifth month of gestation was not associated to abortion.


Neospora caninum é descrito como uma importante causa de abortamento em bovinos por todo o mundo. O objetivo do presente estudo foi caracterizar o padrão da dinâmica de anticorpos durante a gestação em vacas leiteiras infectadas naturalmente por N. caninum. Doze vacas gestantes infectadas naturalmente com N.caninum foram selecionadas de quatro rebanhos leiteiros do Brasil e amostras de sangue foram mensalmente colhidas da concepção até o parto das vacas. Soros foram testados para anticorpos contra N. caninum pela reação de imunofluorescência indireta (RIFI). Durante a gestação, todas as vacas permaneceram clinicamente normais e geraram bezerros saudáveis. As vacas permaneceram soropositivas durante o estudo e títulos de anticorpos anti-N.caninum variaram de 100 a 12.800; somente o animal 234 apresentou um resultado negativo no primeiro mês de gestação. Diferenças significativas dos títulos da RIFI para N. caninum foram encontradas entre os meses de 1 a 9 de gestação pelo Teste de Friedman (P<0,001). As análises estatísticas mostraram um aumento dos títulos de anticorpos anti-N. caninum no segundo e terceiro trimestre de gestação em relação ao primeiro trimestre. Altos títulos de anticorpos foram observados em algumas vacas após o mês cinco de gestação. Este estudo mostrou variação dos níveis de anticorpos em vacas soropositivas durante diferentes períodos gestacionais. Altos títulos foram observados durante o segundo e terceiro trimestre e o aumento dos títulos de anticorpos após o quinto mês de gestação não foi associado a abortamentos.

Cysticercus tenuicollis is the larval stage of the canine tapeworm Taenia hydatigena, the presence of which has been reported in wild and domestic ruminants all over the world. It is a common parasite of small ruminants in the north of Portugal. C. tenuicollis is generally seen attached to the omenta, the mesenteries or also found in the liver. In the ewe, tissue lesions have been associated with degenerative cysts or with oncosphere migrations. Unusual locations of the cysticerci of T. hydatigena have been described. The most frequent unusual locations are in the lungs, the kidneys and the brain. Less common locations have been reported to occur in the ovaries, uterine tubes, uterus, cervix and vagina. In the case described here, and for the first time, an aberrant location of a C. tenuicollis vesicle was found inside the chorion-allantoic membrane of a goat's foetus, in a gemelar gestation of approximately 70 days. Finding a C. tenuicollis vesicle inside fetal membranes forewarns of the possibility of larval migrations into the fetal structures during pregnancy, which is particularly concerning in human populations that are infested.

RESUMO

A foetal cat exhibiting multiple congenital malformations and meeting the criteria for being considered as a case of true schistosoma reflexum (SR) is described. SR in animals is briefly compared with relatively similar malformation entities in humans. Murine gene mutations producing severe ventral body wall defects associated with anomalies of internal organs and other structures are briefly reviewed. New insights into aetiopathogenic mechanisms possibly implicated in the development of SR are suggested. This is probably the first case of true SR reported in the cat.

The protozoan parasite Neospora caninum is the most frequently diagnosed abortifacient in the UK and a leading cause of abortion worldwide but the mechanisms leading to abortion are not fully understood. The distribution of parasites and the histopathological changes in the placenta and foetus were compared in 12 cows following experimental infection of cattle with N. caninum in early (n=6) and late (n=6) gestation, by PCR, immunohistology, light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Twelve uninfected pregnant cattle were used as controls. Infection in early gestation led to foetal death. In the placentae of cattle immediately following foetal death, N. caninum DNA was detected and there was evidence of widespread parasite dissemination. This was associated with extensive focal epithelial necrosis, serum leakage and moderate maternal interstitial mononuclear cell infiltration. In the foetuses, parasites were evident in all tissues examined and were associated with necrosis. In the placenta of cattle infected in late gestation, N. caninum DNA was detected sporadically but parasites were not evident immunohistologically. Small foci of necrosis were seen associated with mild interstitial mononuclear cell infiltration. Detection of N. caninum DNA in the foetuses was sporadic and parasites were demonstrated immunohistologically in brain and spinal cord only, with an associated mononuclear cell infiltration. This data is consistent with uncontrolled parasite spread in an immunologically immature foetus and could, via multiparenchymal necrosis of foetal tissues or the widespread necrosis and inflammation observed in the placenta, be the cause of Neospora-associated abortions.

Lesions suggestive of protozoal infection such as nonsuppurative myositis, nonsuppurative myocarditis, nonsuppurative pneumonia associated with focal cellular necrosis and multifocal necrotizing nonsuppurative encephalitis were observed in 89 (34%) out of 258 aborted bovine fetuses. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) revealed tachyzoites and cysts of Neospora caninum in 55 (61.8%) of these 89 fetuses. Several fetal variables were tested by multivariate logistic regression, in which increasing odds for positivity in IHC were associated with the presence of lesion in the lung (OR=12.11) and less autolytic brain tissue (brain consistency, OR=5.73). However, autolysis in the brain precluded presumptive diagnosis made by histopathology in 53% of the fetuses examined. These results indicate that, when fetal brain is autolyzed, the lung may be adequately used for the presumptive diagnosis of N. caninum infection. The results also confirmed that, even autolyzed, the brain is the most suitable organ for anti-N. caninum IHC.
