RESUMEN: En salmonicultura se utilizan imágenes de rayos X, para evaluar la columna vertebral y las aletas, pero estas no permiten cuantificar los minerales que constituyen el hueso, para esto se utilizan otras técnicas que son destructivas. La Microscopía Electrónica de Barrido de presión variable (VP SEM) acoplada al detector espectroscopia de rayos X de energía dispersiva (EDX) acoplado, nos permite analizar la microestructura y a la vez determinar elementos químicos, porcentaje y distribución presentes en puntos específicos en una muestra. Se utilizaron 5 truchas control y 5 con deformidad mandibular, de agua dulce en etapa de smolt, se analizó la estructura y mineralización del hueso, se eligieron en promedio 6 puntos de cuantificación por región de interés y se analizaron mediante Microscopía Electrónica de Barrido (VP SEM-EDX). Los datos obtenidos muestran porcentaje en masa de Ca promedio en hueso articular de truchas fueron de 8.07 % y de 14.48 % en truchas con deformidad mandibular y control respectivamente y el porcentaje en masa promedio de P es de 4.07 % y 7.60 %, en truchas con deformidad mandibular y control respectivamente. Se identificó además otros elementos presentes en la muestra como Mg, Na, C, O, N, S, F, Zn, Al y Fe, con especial interés en el aumento de carbono en las muestras analizadas con deformidad mandibular y la presencia de aluminio en todas las muestras. La Técnica de VP SEM-EDX, permite evaluar de forma directa, sin destrucción de la muestra y con una preparación mínima de la muestra. En el hueso, la aplicación más frecuente de SEM-EDX es la medición del contenido de Ca y P y la relación que existe entre estos elementos Ca/P, en la muestra. Paralelamente la técnica nos permite la detección de otros microelementos provenientes del agua o de la alimentación y que eventualmente pueden provocar alteraciones en los peces, confirmando la hipótesis que el microanálisis elemental tiene utilidad para la salmonicultura.


SUMMARY: In salmon farming systems, X-ray images are used to evaluate the spine and fins, but these do not allow quantifying the minerals that make up the bone, for different techniques that are destructive are used. Variable Pressure Scanning Electron Microscopy (VP SEM) coupled to an Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy detector (EDX), allows us to analyze the microstructure and at the same time determine chemical elements, percentages, and distribution present at specific points in a sample. Five control and five jaw deformity trout, from freshwater and in the smolt stage were used. The structure and mineralization of the bone were analyzed, an average six quantification points were chosen per region of interest (ROI) and then they were analyzed by Scanning Electron Microscopy (VP SEM-EDX). The data obtained have shown the average mass percentage of calcium in trout joint bone was 8.07 % and 14.48 % in jaw deformity and control trout, respectively; and the average mass percentage of phosphorus is 4.07 % and 7.60 %, in jaw deformity and control trout, respectively. Other elements present in the sample were also identified, such as magnesium, sodium, carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, sulphur, fluorine, zinc, aluminium, and iron, with special interest the increase of carbon in the analyzed samples with mandibular deformity and the presence of aluminum in all samples. The VP SEM-EDX Technique allows direct evaluation, without destruction of the sample and with minimal sample preparation. In bone, the most frequent application of SEM-EDX is the measurement of the content of calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) and the relationship that exists between these elements, calcium/phosphorus (Ca/P), in the sample. At the same time, the technique allows us to detect other microelements from water or food that can eventually cause alterations in fish, confirming the hypothesis that elemental microanalysis is useful for salmon farming.

Non-thermal plasma activated water (PAW) has recently emerged as a powerful antimicrobial agent. Despite numerous potential bio-medical applications, studies concerning toxicity in live animals, especially after long-term exposure, are scarce. Our study aimed to assess the effects of long-term watering with PAW on the health of CD1 mice. PAW was prepared from distilled water with a GlidArc reactor according to a previously published protocol. The pH was 2.78. The mice received PAW (experimental group) or tap water (control group) daily for 90 days as the sole water source. After 90 days, the following investigations were performed on the euthanatized animals: gross necropsy, teeth mineral composition, histopathology, immunohistochemistry, hematology, blood biochemistry, methemoglobin level and cytokine profile. Mice tolerated PAW very well and no adverse effects were observed during the entire period of the experiment. Histopathological examination of the organs and tissues did not reveal any structural changes. Moreover, the expression of proliferation markers PCNA and Ki67 has not been identified in the epithelium of the upper digestive tract, indicating the absence of any pre- or neoplastic transformations. The results of our study demonstrated that long-term exposure to PAW caused no toxic effects and could be used as oral antiseptic solution in dental medicine.

BACKGROUND: Organs that develop early in life, and are replaced by a larger version as the animal grows, often represent a miniature version of the adult organ. Teeth constituting the first functional dentition in small-sized teleost fish, such as medaka (Oryzias latipes), are examples of such miniature organs. With a dentin cone as small as the size of one human cell, or even smaller, these teeth raise the question how many dentin-producing cells (odontoblasts) are required to build such a tooth, and whether this number can be as little as one. RESULTS: Based on detailed observations with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and TEM-based 3D-reconstructions, we show that only one mesenchymal cell qualifies as a true odontoblast. A second mesenchymal cell potentially participates in dentin formation, but only at a late stage of tooth development. Moreover, the fate of these cells appears to be specified very early during tooth development. CONCLUSIONS: Our observations indicate that in this system, one single odontoblast fulfills roles normally exerted by a large and communicating cell population. First-generation teeth in medaka thus provide an exciting model to study integration of multiple functions into a single cell.

OBJECTIVE: This in vitro study is aimed at investigating the caries preventive effectiveness of 445 nm diode laser in combination with topical fluoridation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 30 caries-free bovine teeth were used in this study. Eighteen teeth were covered with nail varnish except four windows on the labial surface. The windows were assigned to no treatment/control (C), laser (L) (0.3 W, 60 s, and 90 J/cm2), fluoride (F), and fluoride followed by laser (FL) treatment groups. Artificial caries lesions were created, and the teeth were sectioned and investigated under polarized light microscopy for quantitative measurement of the resulted lesion depth. Ten teeth were used for surface temperature measurement and two teeth for scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Extra twelve human molars were used for the intrapulpal temperature measurement. The absorbance of fluoride at 445 nm was measured. RESULTS: The means of lesion depth for the C, L, F, and FL groups were 123.48 (±21.93), 112.33 (±20.42), 99.58 (±30.68), and 89.03 (±30.38) µm, respectively. The pairwise differences of the L, F, and FL groups compared with the C group were significant (p < 0.05). The differences between groups were tested: FL versus L p=0.02, F versus L p=0.16, and FL versus F p=0.91, and the difference of the F versus FL was not significant (p=0.91). Temperature increment at the enamel surface and pulp roof were ∆T = 16.67 (±4.11) and 2.12 (±0.66)°C, respectively. The topical fluoride absorbance at 445 nm is five orders higher than that at 810 nm. SEM shows that after laser irradiation the enamel surface was intact and without thermal damage. CONCLUSIONS: The 445 nm laser irradiation may be useful for caries prevention, and its effectiveness is lower than those previously achieved using the argon ion laser.

Dental caries and trauma, particularly in childhood, are among the most prevalent teeth problems, which result in the creation of cavities and probably tooth loss. Thus, novel regenerative approaches with high efficiency and less toxicity are required. Stem cell therapy along with the implementation of scaffolds has provided excellent opportunities in the regeneration of teeth structure. Hyaluronic acid (HA) hydrogels have enticed great attention in the field of regenerative medicine. The unique chemical and structural properties of HA and its derivatives have enabled their application in tissue engineering. Several factors such as the location and type of the lesion, teeth age, the type of capping materials determine the success rate of pulp therapy. HA hydrogels have been considered as biocompatible and safe scaffold supports in human dental cell therapies.

Lipophilic components are known to modulate the process of bioadhesion on the tooth surface. However, the presence of lipid droplets at the acquired pellicle under oral conditions has not been demonstrated, yet. The purpose of the present study was to establish a method for direct visualisation of lipids on the surface of hydrated, pellicle covered tooth samples by environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM), and to use this technique for studying the effects of rinsing with edible oils on the acquired pellicle under in vivo conditions. In situ pellicle formation was performed by 3 min exposure of enamel and dentin specimens in the oral cavity of volunteers. Subsequently, the volunteers rinsed in vivo with safflower oil or linseed oil for 30 s, and the specimens were further carried intraorally for periods from 0 min up to several hours. After intraoral exposure the specimens were treated by osmium tetroxide vapour, and were subsequently analysed by ESEM. This technique was capable to directly visualise the presence of lipid droplets at the pellicle's surface under hydrated conditions. ESEM analyses revealed that surface bound nano- and micro-sized lipid droplets were present at the acquired pellicle's surface even several hours after rinsing with edible oils indicating that these droplets had tightly adhered to the pellicle surface. Pellicle modification by edible oil rinsing as demonstrated in the present study might have the potential to be beneficial as an adjunct in dental prophylaxis.

Mouthrot, caused by Tenacibaculum maritimum is a significant disease of farmed Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar on the West Coast of North America. Smolts recently transferred into saltwater are the most susceptible and affected fish die with little internal or external clinical signs other than the characteristic small (usually < 5 mm) yellow plaques that are present inside the mouth. The mechanism by which these smolts die is unknown. This study investigated the microscopic pathology (histology and scanning electron microscopy) of bath infected smolts with Western Canadian T. maritimum isolates TmarCan15-1, TmarCan16-1 and TmarCan16-5 and compared the findings to what is seen in a natural outbreak of mouthrot. A real-time RT-PCR assay based on the outer membrane protein A specific for T. maritimum was designed and used to investigate the tissue tropism of the bacteria. The results from this showed that T. maritimum is detectable internally by real-time RT-PCR. This combined with the fact that the bacteria can be isolated from the kidney suggests that T. maritimum becomes systemic. The pathology in the infected smolts is primarily mouth lesions, including damaged tissues surrounding the teeth; the disease is similar to periodontal disease in mammals. The pathological changes are focal, severe, and occur very rapidly with little associated inflammation. Skin lesions are more common in experimentally infected smolts than in natural outbreaks, but this could be an artefact of the challenge dose, handling and tank used during the experiments.

Enamel makes up the outermost layer of the crown and its hardness protects other dental tissues from various stimuli. Enamel cannot be regenerated once damaged because ameloblasts are lost during the tooth eruption. Since the ameloblast differentiation mechanism is still unknown, further research is essential for developing treatments for defective or damaged enamel. Previously, we have reported that osteoblast differentiation and bone formation were regulated through the runt-related transcription factor 2 (Runx2)-nuclear factor 1-C (Nfic)-osterix (Osx) pathway where Nfic directly controls Osx expression. This pathway regulates odontoblast differentiation and dentin formation as well. The aim of this study was to investigate if the same pathway is applicable for ameloblast differentiation. Structural enamel defects with disorganized ameloblasts and decreased proliferation activity of the cervical loop were observed in Nfic-/- mice incisors. Expression of the ameloblast differentiation markers was also downregulated significantly in Nfic-/- mice. Real-time PCR analyses suggested that Runx2, Nfic, and Osx regulate the expression of ameloblast differentiation markers, where Runx2 is upstream of Nfic, and Nfic controls Osx expression. Therefore, we suggest the Runx2-Nfic-Osx pathway as one of the key factors that regulate ameloblast differentiation.

PURPOSE: To evaluate different therapeutic Carnoy's solution formulations on hard human tissues. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An in vitro study was performed with human teeth (n = 36) and bone fragments (n = 18), randomly divided into two experimental groups (Group I = Carnoy solution with chloroform; Group II = Carnoy solution without chloroform) and a control group (saline solution). The groups were subdivided into pre-conditioning, post-conditioning, and post-conditioning with saline washing. Raman microspectroscopy, Knoop microhardness test, and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy were used. RESULTS: There was demineralization of dental structures regarding mineral/matrix and carbonate/phosphate ratios (GI versus GII, p < 0.05). The presence of chloroform resulted in a statistically significant reduction of the teeth surface microhardness (p = 0.036), but not exceeding 0.01 µm. Both GI and GII showed significant structural changes by using scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. CONCLUSION: Carnoy's solution altered the organic and inorganic matrix of the human calcified specimens analyzed in vitro, and its effect was more pronounced when chloroform was present.

Patients with tricho-dento-osseous (TDO) syndrome, an ectodermal dysplasia caused by mutations in the homeodomain transcription factor DLX3, exhibit enamel hypoplasia and hypomineralization. Here we used a conditional knockout mouse model to investigate the developmental and molecular consequences of Dlx3 deletion in the dental epithelium in vivo. Dlx3 deletion in the dental epithelium resulted in the formation of chalky hypomineralized enamel in all teeth. Interestingly, transcriptomic analysis revealed that major enamel matrix proteins and proteases known to be involved in enamel secretion and maturation were not affected significantly by Dlx3 deletion in the enamel organ. In contrast, expression of several ion transporters and carbonic anhydrases known to play an important role in enamel pH regulation during maturation was significantly affected in enamel organs lacking DLX3. Most of these affected genes showed binding of DLX3 to their proximal promoter as evidenced by chromatin immunoprecipitation sequencing (ChIP-seq) analysis on rat enamel organ. These molecular findings were consistent with altered pH staining evidenced by disruption of characteristic pH oscillations in the enamel. Taken together, these results show that DLX3 is indispensable for the regulation of ion transporters and carbonic anhydrases during the maturation stage of amelogenesis, exerting a crucial regulatory function on pH oscillations during enamel mineralization. © 2016 American Society for Bone and Mineral Research.

The goal of this study was to develop an optimized drug delivery carrier for oral mucosa applications able to release in situ bioactive molecules by using biopolymeric materials. Among them chitosan and poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) have gained considerable attention as biocompatible carriers able to improve the delivery of active agents. The formulation of such vehicles in the form of nanoparticles (NPs) could permit to exploit the peculiar properties of nanomaterials in order to enhance the efficacy of active agents. Chitosan (CS) and PLGA chlorexidine dihydrochloride (CHX)-loaded NPs were synthesized by ionotropic gelation and osmosis based methodology respectively. In order to facilitate NPs adhesion on human dental surfaces, two different strategies were employed: PLGA particles with an external shell of CS to produce a positive surface charge allowing CHX loaded PLGA NPs to interact with the negative charged dental surfaces, while CS particles were functionalized with peptidomimetic derivative glutathione (GSH). The morphology was investigated by scanning electron microscopy. A sustained release profile of CHX from CS NPs was achieved. CS-based NPs adhered on human tooth surfaces in a simulated brushing and rinsing process and their in vitro toxicity evaluation on Human Gingival Fibroblasts (HGFs) was between 20 and 60% in all experimental conditions. Thanks to their adhesion properties and low cytotoxicity, the synthesized CS-based formulations may be efficiently exploited for therapy purposes or to enhance in vivo dental care (i.e. preparation of toothpastes or other cosmetics for daily oral care).

Mammals that inhabit islands are characterized by peculiar morphologies in comparison to their mainland relatives. Here we report the discovery of a partial skull associated with the lower jaws of a Late Cretaceous (≈70 Ma) multituberculate mammal from the Carpathian "Hateg Island" of Transylvania, Romania. The mammal belongs to the Kogaionidae, one of the rare families that survived the Cretaceous-Paleogene mass extinction in Europe. The excellent preservation of this specimen allows for the first time description of the complete dentition of a kogaionid and demonstration that the enigmatic Barbatodon transylvanicus presents a mosaic of primitive and derived characters, and that it is phylogenetically basal among the Cimolodonta. Another peculiarity is the presence of red pigmentation in its tooth enamel. The red coloration is present on the anterior side of the incisors and on the cusps of most of the teeth. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS) analysis reveals that the pigmented enamel contains iron, as in living placentals. Such a red pigmentation is known in living soricine shrews and many families of rodents, where it is thought to increase the resistance of the enamel to the abrasion that occurs during "grinding" mastication. The extended pattern of red pigment distribution in Barbatodon is more similar to that in eulipotyplan insectivores than to that in rodents and suggests a very hard diet and, importantly, demonstrates that its grasping incisors were not ever-growing. As inferred for other endemic Transylvanian vertebrates such as dwarf herbivorous dinosaurs and unusual theropod dinosaurs, insularity was probably the main factor of survival of such a primitive mammalian lineage relative to other mainland contemporaries of the Northern hemisphere.

MATERIAL AND METHODS: The authors investigated three mature ovarian dermoid cysts that were found to contain atypically developed teeth (one tooth in one cyst; 2 teeth in another cyst, and a set of 8 teeth with jawbone fragments in the third one). Their structure was examined using the epoxy resin plastination technique to obtain plastinated sections. RESULTS: Some of these teratomous teeth have obvious signs of alteration in both dentin and enamel, which may be referred to as fluorosis or macular enamel hypoplasia in one case whereas other sections indicate a caries lesion. CONCLUSION: These facts are contradictory to the concept of the exogenous nature of dental caries, which is accepted in dentistry.

INTRODUCTION: The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI) with 17% EDTA and 1% NaOCl solutions on smear layer removal. METHODS: Root canal preparations of 32 human teeth were performed with the ProTaper system. Next, they were longitudinally fractured to permit quantitation of smear layer creation from the cervical, middle, and apical thirds of the roots by using scanning electron microscopy. After reassembling the fractured tooth halves, they were divided into 4 groups according to different final irrigation protocols: group1, EDTA + NaOCl; group 2, EDTA with PUI + NaOCl; group 3, EDTA + NaOCl with PUI; and group 4, EDTA + NaOCl, both with PUI. After irrigation, the tooth halves were separated to permit imaging the same areas by scanning electron microscopy, and a percentage of opened dentinal tubules in irrigated areas as a percent of the total area was obtained. The results were submitted to Kruskal-Wallis, analysis of variance, and Bonferroni tests (α = 0.05). RESULTS: The cervical third of the samples from all groups showed higher percentage of smear layer removal and open dentinal tubule areas, followed by the middle and apical thirds. Among the irrigation groups, there were statistically significant differences in cervical third between group 2 and group 4 samples, with the highest and lowest percentage of smear layer removal, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: PUI by using 1% NaOCl and ultrasonic tip placed within 1 mm of the apical foramen did not show higher efficacy in smear layer removal compared with conventional irrigation.

Dentin dysplasia type I (DD-I) is a rare human dentin disorder that may affect both the primary and permanent dentitions. The teeth present crowns with normal morphology but short or absent roots. Pulp chamber obliteration and early exfoliation of primary teeth are also observed. We describe herein the typical and atypical features of DD-I presented by a 6-year-old patient, the diagnostic rationale and assessment emphasizing the histological and scanning electron microscopic analysis and the therapeutic approach. The DD-I diagnosis in patients in the mixed dentition period is challenging, especially when only some teeth are affected.

ClC-7 is a 2Cl(-) /1H(+) -exchanger expressed at late endosomes and lysosomes, as well as the ruffled border of osteoclasts. ClC-7 deficiencies in mice and humans lead to impaired osteoclast function and therefore osteopetrosis. Failure of tooth eruption is also apparent in ClC-7 mutant animals, and this has been attributed to the osteoclast dysfunction and the subsequent defect in alveolar bone resorptive activity surrounding tooth roots. Ameloblasts also express ClC-7, and this study aims to determine the significance of ClC-7 in enamel formation by examining the dentitions of ClC-7 mutant mice. Micro-CT analysis revealed that the molar teeth of 3-week old ClC-7 mutant mice had no roots, and the incisors were smaller than their age-matched controls. Despite these notable developmental differences, the enamel and dentin densities of the mutant mice were comparable to those of the wild-type littermates. Scanning electron microscopy showed normal enamel crystallite and prismatic organization in the ClC-7 mutant mice, although the enamel was thinner (hypoplastic) than in controls. These results suggested that ClC-7 was not critical to enamel and dentin formation, and the observed tooth defects may be related more to a resulting alveolar bone phenotype. Micro-CT analysis also revealed abnormal features in the calvarial bones of the mutant mice. The cranial sutures in ClC-7 mutant mice remained open compared to the closed sutures seen in the control mice at 3 weeks. These data demonstrate that ClC-7 deficiency impacts the development of the dentition and calvaria, but does not significantly disrupt amelogenesis.

Functional genomic screening of the rat enamel organ (EO) has led to the identification of a number of secreted proteins expressed during the maturation stage of amelogenesis, including amelotin (AMTN) and odontogenic ameloblast-associated (ODAM). In this study, we characterise the gene, protein and pattern of expression of a related protein called secretory calcium-binding phosphoprotein-proline-glutamine-rich 1 (SCPPPQ1). The Scpppq1 gene resides within the secretory calcium-binding phosphoprotein (Scpp) cluster. SCPPPQ1 is a highly conserved, 75-residue, secreted protein rich in proline, leucine, glutamine and phenylalanine. In silico data mining has revealed no correlation to any known sequences. Northern blotting of various rat tissues suggests that the expression of Scpppq1 is restricted to tooth and associated tissues. Immunohistochemical analyses show that the protein is expressed during the late maturation stage of amelogenesis and in the junctional epithelium where it localises to an atypical basal lamina at the cell-tooth interface. This discrete localisation suggests that SCPPPQ1, together with AMTN and ODAM, participates in structuring the basal lamina and in mediating attachment of epithelia cells to mineralised tooth surfaces.

O objetivo desse trabalho foi contribuir com o estudo anatômico, morfométrico, ultraestrutural e propriedades físicas dos dentes permanentes do primata Sapajus apella. Para tal, foram utilizados 10 animais adultos e machos. Os dentes foram avaliados quanto ao seu comprimento e quanto à anatomia radicular externa e interna considerando número de raízes e canais, forma e direção radicular e forma do canal, assim como análise da densidade e diâmetro tubular do canal radicular, composição e microdureza dentinária. A anatomia radicular desse primata apresentou especificidades, como o número de raízes do segundo pré-molar superior e a presença do terceiro pré-molar. Quanto à densidade e o diâmetro dos túbulos dentinários, observou-se uma diminuição do número e diâmetro de túbulos ao longo do canal radicular, havendo diferença estatisticamente significante ao se comparar o terço apical com as regiões cervical e média, padrão de densidade e tamanho semelhantes a dentes humanos. This paper aimed the anatomical study including morphometric, ultrastructural and physical properties of permanent teeth of Sapajus apella primate. Ten adult male monkeys were studied. The teeth were evaluated for their length, root anatomy (external and internal considering the number of roots and canals), direction and shape of the root canal, density and diameter of the tubular root canal, dentin microhardness, and composition. The root anatomy showed specificity regarding the number of roots of the second premolar and the presence of the third premolar. We observed a decrease in the number and diameter of dentinal tubules along the root canal, a statistically significant difference when compared with the apical and cervical regions. AIM: Periradicular surgery is a procedure that includes surgical exposure of the diseased apex, root-end cavity preparation, and retrofilling of the root canal. The aim of this study was to compare the outcomes of periradicular surgery in vitro using different dental materials and storage methods for human teeth specimens. METHODS: The sample comprised 60 human single-rooted teeth, divided into two groups according to mode of storage (hydrated or non-hydrated); each group was then subdivided by retrofilling material (mineral trioxide aggregate or resin-modified glass ionomer cement). Each specimen was analyzed by digital radiography and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Quantitative assessment of the gap between the retrofilling material and dentin surface was conducted by observation of apical views (2000x magnification) of four areas of each specimen. RESULTS: The gap between retrofilling material and the internal dentin surface of the root was found to be significantly wider in hydrated teeth (P=0.002). Comparison of the two retrofilling materials showed that, regardless of tooth storage method, use of glass ionomer cement was associated with significantly wider gaps between the filling material and dentin surface (P=0.001). Comparisons of tooth storage mode versus retrofilling material showed a statistical interaction (P=0.009) between these factors. CONCLUSION: Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA®) provided the best apical sealing, regardless of storage medium. Resin-modified glass ionomer cement (Vitremer®) was associated with substantially larger mean gap values when used in hydrated teeth.

OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated the surface structures and physicochemical characteristics of a novel autogenous tooth bone graft material currently in clinical use. STUDY DESIGN: The material's surface structure was compared with a variety of other bone graft materials via scanning electron microscope (SEM). The crystalline structure of the autogenous tooth bone graft material from the crown (AutoBT crown) and root (AutoBT root), xenograft (BioOss), alloplastic material (MBCP), allograft (ICB), and autogenous mandibular cortical bone were compared using x-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The solubility of each material was measured with the Ca/P dissolution test. RESULTS: The results of the SEM analysis showed that the pattern associated with AutoBT was similar to that from autogenous cortical bones. In the XRD analysis, AutoBT root and allograft showed a low crystalline structure similar to that of autogenous cortical bones. In the CaP dissolution test, the amount of calcium and phosphorus dissolution in AutoBT was significant from the beginning, while displaying a pattern similar to that of autogenous cortical bones. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, autogenous tooth bone graft materials can be considered to have physicochemical characteristics similar to those of autogenous bones.
