RESUMO

Theranostic systems, which integrate therapy and diagnosis into a single platform, have gained significant attention as a promising approach for noninvasive cancer treatment. The field of image-guided therapy has revolutionized real-time tumor detection, and within this domain, plasmonic nanostructures have garnered significant attention. These structures possess unique localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), allowing for enhanced absorption in the near-infrared (NIR) range. By leveraging the heat generated from plasmonic nanoparticles upon NIR irradiation, target cancer cells can be effectively eradicated. This study introduces a plasmonic gold dogbone-nanorattle (AuDB NRT) structure that exhibits broad absorption in the NIR region and demonstrates a photothermal conversion efficiency of 35.29%. When exposed to an NIR laser, the AuDB NRTs generate heat, achieving a maximum temperature rise of 38 °C at a concentration of 200 µg/mL and a laser power density of 3 W/cm2. Additionally, the AuDB NRTs possess intrinsic electromagnetic hotspots that amplify the signal of a Raman reporter molecule, making them an excellent probe for surface-enhanced Raman scattering-based bioimaging of cancer cells. To improve the biocompatibility of the nanorattles, the AuDB NRTs were conjugated with mPEG-thiol and successfully encapsulated into cationic dextrin nanoparticles (CD NPs). Biocompatibility tests were performed on HEK 293 A and MCF-7 cell lines, revealing high cell viability when exposed to AuDB NRT-CD NPs. Remarkably, even at a low laser power density of 1 W/cm2, the application of the NIR laser resulted in a remarkable 80% cell death in cells treated with a nanocomposite concentration of 100 µg/mL. Further investigation elucidated that the cell death induced by photothermal heat followed an apoptotic mechanism. Overall, our findings highlight the significant potential of the prepared nanocomposite for cancer theranostics, combining effective photothermal therapy along with the ability to image cancer cells.

In this work, the biological properties of fractionated Riceberry bran protein hydrolysate obtained by ultrafiltration (URBPH) were evaluated and the possibility of using cluster dextrin to produce hydrolysate powder by spray-drying was investigated. Fractionation into peptides < 3 kDa was observed to improve antioxidant activity. URBPH < 3 kDa was then freeze-dried (FD-URBPH) and spray-dried (SD-URBPH) at different inlet air temperatures of 100-160 °C. The water solubility and antioxidant activity of FD-URBPH were higher than those of SD-URBPH. Nevertheless, encapsulation of hydrolysate with 10% cluster dextrin and an inlet temperature of 120 °C was also successful in maintaining protein qualities, which showed high 2,2'-azino-bis 3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic (ABTS•+) scavenging activity (89.14%) and water solubility index (92.49%) and low water activity (aw = 0.53). Moreover, encapsulation preserved the antioxidant activity of peptides during gastrointestinal digestion better than the free form. URBPH and its spray-dried microcapsules could be used as bioactive ingredients in functional drinks or foods.

Atropine is a tropane alkaloid found in abundance in Datura plant. We used two liquid-liquid extraction methods and magnet solid-phase extraction to compare the amount of atropine in these two types of plants (Datura innoxia and Datura stramonium). The surface magnetic nanoparticle Fe3O4 correction with an amine and dextrin, and finally, magnetic solid-phase extraction Fe3O4@SiO2-NH2-dextrin (MNPs-dextrin), was prepared. We determined the effect of significant parameters in the removal step and optimization of atropine measurements with half-fractional factorial design (25-1) and response surface methodology via central composite design. The optimum conditions are for desorption solvent = 0.5 mL methanol and desorption time of 5 min. We obtained an extraction recovery of 87.63% with a relative standard deviation of 4.73% via six frequented measurements on a 1 µg L-1 atropine standard solution based on the optimum condition. Preconcentration factors for MNPs are 81, limit of detection = 0.76 µg L-1 and limit of quantitation = 2.5 µg L-1.

A novel biodegradable dextrin-based nanocomposite, involving polypyrrole (PPy) and hydrophilic dextrin (Dex) (PPy@Dex) was prepared using in-situ radical chemical polymerization technique. The obtained PPy@Dex bionanocomposite was fully characterized by FT-IR, XRD, FESEM, and DSC methods. The exceptional properties such as biocompatibility, high surface area, the proper functional group on the surface, and outstanding electrical conductivity of synthesized bionanocomposite made it a superior candidate over biomolecules immobilization. Electrochemical observations revealed that the PPy@Dex-coated glassy carbon electrode (GCE) demonstrated improved performance, making it a suitable substrate for immobilizing hemoglobin (Hb) and constructing an efficient biosensor. The resulting biosensor, named Hb-PPy@Dex/GCE, exhibited high activity in the reduction of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Amperometric examinations demonstrated an extensive linear range from 2 to 350 µM for Hb-PPy@Dex/GCE. The detection limit of the proposed approach was calculated to be 0.54 µM, following the S/N = 3 protocol.

Core-shell biopolymer nanoparticles are assembled from a hydrophobic protein (zein) core and a hydrophilic polysaccharide (carboxymethyl dextrin) shell. The nanoparticles were shown to have good stability and the ability to protect quercetin from chemical degradation under long-term storage, pasteurization, and UV irradiation. Spectroscopy analysis shows that electrostatic, hydrogen bonding, and hydrophobic interactions are the main driving forces for the formation of composite nanoparticles. Quercetin coated with nanoparticles significantly enhanced its antioxidant and antibacterial activities and showed good stability and slow release in vitro during simulated gastrointestinal digestion. Furthermore, the encapsulation efficiency of carboxymethyl dextrin-coated zein nanoparticles (81.2%) for quercetin was significantly improved compared with that of zein nanoparticles alone (58.4%). These results indicate that carboxymethyl dextrin-coated zein nanoparticles can significantly improve the bioavailability of hydrophobic nutrient molecules such as quercetin and provide a valuable reference for their application in the field of biological delivery of energy drinks and food.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to improve the performance and mode of administration of a glass-reinforced hydroxyapatite synthetic bone substitute, Bonelike by Biosckin® (BL®), by association with a dextrin-based hydrogel, DEXGEL, to achieve an injectable and moldable device named DEXGEL Bone. METHODS: Twelve participants requiring pre-molar tooth extraction and implant placement were enrolled in this study. BL® granules (250-500 µm) were administered to 6 randomized participants whereas the other 6 received DEXGEL Bone. After 6 months, a bone biopsy of the grafted area was collected for histological and histomorphometric evaluation, prior to implant placement. The performance of DEXGEL Bone and BL® treatments on alveolar preservation were further analyzed by computed tomography and Hounsfield density analysis. Primary implant stability was analyzed by implant stability coefficient technique. RESULTS: The healing of defects was free of any local or systemic complications. Both treatments showed good osseointegration with no signs of adverse reaction. DEXGEL Bone exhibited increased granule resorption (p = 0.029) accompanied by a tendency for more new bone ingrowth (although not statistically significant) compared to the BL® group. The addition of DEXGEL to BL® granules did not compromise bone volume or density, being even beneficial for implant primary stability (p = 0.017). CONCLUSIONS: The hydrogel-reinforced biomaterial exhibited an easier handling, a better defect filling, and benefits in implant stability. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This study validates DEXGEL Bone safety and performance as an injectable carrier of granular bone substitutes for alveolar ridge preservation. Previous studies have shown that a resistant dextrin soluble fibre has prebiotic properties with related health benefits on blood glucose management and satiety. Our aim was to demonstrate the effects of continuous administration of resistant dextrin on intestinal gas production, digestive sensations, and gut microbiota metabolism and composition. Healthy subjects (n = 20) were given resistant dextrin (14 g/d NUTRIOSE®, Roquette Frères, Lestrem, France) for four weeks. Outcomes were measured before, at the beginning, end, and two weeks after administration: anal evacuations of gas during daytime; digestive perception, girth, and gas production in response to a standard meal; sensory and digestive responses to a comfort meal; volume of colonic biomass by magnetic resonance; taxonomy and metabolic functions of fecal microbiota by shotgun sequencing; metabolomics in urine. Dextrin administration produced an initial increase in intestinal gas production and gas-related sensations, followed by a subsequent decrease, which magnified after discontinuation. Dextrin enlarged the volume of colonic biomass, inducing changes in microbial metabolism and composition with an increase in short chain fatty acids-producing species and modulation of bile acids and biotin metabolism. These data indicate that consumption of a soluble fibre induces an adaptative response of gut microbiota towards fermentative pathways with lower gas production.

BACKGROUND: Immunity is a major system that defends the human body from the outside. Recently, interest in foods related to immunity has been increasing. METHODS: The purpose of this clinical trial was to determine the safety and efficacy of Phellinus linteus (PL) extract in improving immune function. A total of 30 participants were randomly assigned to 3 groups: the PL1000 group (n = 10) took 1000 mg of PL extract and 1000 mg of dextrin per day; the PL2000 group (n = 10) took 2000 mg of PL extract per day; and the placebo group (n = 10) took 2000 mg of dextrin per day. All participants took 2 capsules twice a day for 8 weeks. We measured their natural killer cell activity and cytokine levels in blood before and after consuming the clinical trial food. Variables were also investigated to evaluate safety, such as adverse reactions, vital signs, and abnormal findings. Student t test or the Mann-Whitney U test, a paired t test or the Wilcoxon signed-rank test, a chi-square test, analysis of variance, and Kruskal-Wallis test were conducted according to the characteristics of the data to compare the differences between each group before and after participants ate the clinical trial food. RESULTS: The natural killer cell activity and interleukin-6 levels of the PL1000 group tended to improve compared to those of the placebo group. Immunoglobulin G1, immunoglobulin G2, and immunoglobulin M levels did not show significant changes, but tended to improve in the PL1000 and PL2000 groups compared to those of the placebo group. Both the Per Protocol and Intention to Treat populations had improved validation parameters. It is safe because no hazards were found in the safety assessment. CONCLUSION: PL extract can help improve immunity. Evidences to conduct the main clinical trial is secured through this pilot study. A future large-scale main trial will be conducted based on this pilot study results.

BACKGROUND: The respiratory system is the first line of defense against outside pollutants. Recently, respiratory health has been receiving increasing attention due to the increase in fine dust, which reduces respiratory function and increases incidence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and in coronavirus pandemic, which can cause severe acute respiratory syndrome. METHODS: This clinical pilot trial was designed to secure evidence for a main clinical trial and to confirm the efficacy and safety of Liriope platyphylla (LP) extract for improving respiratory function. We conducted a double-blind randomized placebo-controlled trial with 22 participants from June 30, 2021, to August 25, 2021. The primary outcome was Breathlessness, Cough, and Sputum Scale score. Secondary outcomes included forced vital capacity, forced expiratory volume at 1 second (FEV1), forced expiratory volume at 1 s/forced vital capacity ratio, cough assessment test score, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease assessment test score, peripheral blood mononuclear cell counts (white blood cells, eosinophils, T cells, and B cells), high-sensitivity C-reactive protein level, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, cytokine (interleukin-1ß, interleukin-4, tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-6, interleukin-8, interferon-γ, and immunoglobulin E) levels, antioxidant (glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase) levels, and nitric oxide level. RESULTS: A total of 22 participants were randomly assigned to 2 groups: the LP group (n = 11), who took 1000 mg of LP extract per day, and the placebo group, who took 1000 mg of dextrin per day. Participants took 1 capsule twice a day for 4 weeks. For the Breathlessness, Cough, and Sputum Scale, the interaction between group and visit was statistically significant in a blend of analyses of variance. interleukin-8, tumor necrosis factor-α, and interferon-γ levels decreased more in the LP group than in the placebo group. The sample size required for large-scale clinical trials in the future was 50. There were no side effects. CONCLUSION: LP extract can enhance respiratory function. The detailed data we obtained support conducting the future main large-scale clinical trial.

Nutraceuticals are bioactive or chemical compounds acclaimed for their valuable biological activities and health-promoting effects. The global community is faced with many health concerns such as cancers, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases, diabetes, arthritis, osteoporosis, etc. The effect of nutraceuticals is similar to pharmaceuticals, even though the term nutraceutical has no regulatory definition. The usage of nutraceuticals, to prevent and treat the aforementioned diseases, is limited by several features such as poor water solubility, low bioavailability, low stability, low permeability, low efficacy, etc. These downsides can be overcome by the application of the field of nanotechnology manipulating the properties and structures of materials at the nanometer scale. In this review, the linear and cyclic dextrin, formed during the enzymatic degradation of starch, are highlighted as highly promising nanomaterials- based drug delivery systems. The modified cyclic dextrin, cyclodextrin (CD)-based nanosponges (NSs), are well-known delivery systems of several nutraceuticals such as quercetin, curcumin, resveratrol, thyme essential oil, melatonin, and appear as a more advanced drug delivery system than modified linear dextrin. CD-based NSs prolong and control the nutraceuticals release, and display higher biocompatibility, stability, and solubility of poorly water-soluble nutraceuticals than the CD-inclusion complexes, or uncomplexed nutraceuticals. In addition, the well-explored CD-based NSs pathways, as drug delivery systems, are described. Although important progress is made in drug delivery, all the findings will serve as a source for the use of CD-based nanosystems for nutraceutical delivery. To sum up, our review introduces the extensive literature about the nutraceutical concepts, synthesis, characterization, and applications of the CD-based nano delivery systems that will further contribute to the nutraceutical delivery with more potent nanosystems based on linear dextrins.

BACKGROUND: Resistant dextrin, as a prebiotic and functional food, may possess favorable effects in type 2 diabetes. This study was conducted to assess whether supplementation with resistant dextrin can improve sleep and quality of life in obese type 2 diabetic women. RESULTS: In this randomized controlled trial, female obese type 2 diabetic patients (n = 76) were randomly assigned into intervention group (n = 38) and placebo group (n = 38), and received 10 g day-1 of resistant dextrin or maltodextrin for a period of 8 weeks, respectively. Sleep quality and quality of life (QOL) were assessed by Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and SF-36 health survey, respectively. Fasting blood samples were driven to measure serum bacterial endotoxin, fasting blood sugar, glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), pro-inflammatory/anti-inflammatory biomarkers (IL-18, IL-6, IL-10, TNF-α), and biomarkers of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis function [tryptophan (TRP), adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), kynurenine (KYN), cortisol]. Supplementation with resistant dextrin improved sleep (P < 0.001) and QOL (P < 0.001) significantly. It also caused a significant decrease in levels of endotoxin, HbA1c, IL-18, IL-6, TNF-α and a significant increase in IL-10 levels. Significant and positive correlations were found between endotoxin (r = 0.488, P = 0.003), IL-6 (r = 0.436, P = 0.008), IL-18 (r = 0.475, P = 0.003), cortisol (r = 0.545, P = 0.048), KYN/TRP (r = 0.527, P = 0.001), and PSQI scores. CONCLUSIONS: It is concluded that resistant dextrin improves sleep and QOL in obese women with type 2 diabetes. Its beneficial effects may be attributed in part to modulation of glycemia, metabolic endotoxemia and subsequently a decrease in biomarkers of inflammation and HPA axis activity. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

In well-developed countries, people have started to pay additional attention to preserving healthy dietary habits, as it has become common knowledge that neglecting them may easily lead to severe health impairments, namely obesity, malnutrition, several cardiovascular diseases, type-2 diabetes, cancers, hypertensions, and inflammations. Various types of functional foods were developed that are enriched with vitamins, probiotics, prebiotics, and dietary fibers in order to develop a healthy balanced diet and to improve the general health of consumers. Numerous kinds of fiber are easily found in nature, but they often have a noticeable undesired impact on the sensory features of foods or on the digestive system. This led to development of modified dietary fibers, which have little to no impact on taste of foods they are added to. At the same time, they possess all the benefits similar to those of prebiotics, such as regulating gastrointestinal microbiota composition, increasing satiety, and improving the metabolic parameters of a human. In the following review, the evidence supporting prebiotic properties of modified starches, particularly resistant starches and their derivatives, resistant dextrins, was assessed and deliberated, which allowed drawing an interesting conclusion on the subject.

PURPOSE: Ingesting beverages containing a high concentration of sodium under euhydrated conditions induces hypervolemia. Because carbohydrate can enhance interstitial fluid absorption via the sodium-glucose cotransporter and insulin-dependent renal sodium reabsorption, adding carbohydrate to high-sodium beverages may augment the hypervolemic response. METHODS: To test this hypothesis, we had nine healthy young males ingest 1087 ± 82 mL (16-17 mL per kg body weight) of water or aqueous solution containing 0.7% NaCl, 0.7% NaCl + 6% dextrin, 0.9% NaCl, or 0.9% NaCl + 6% dextrin under euhydrated conditions. Each drink was divided into six equal volumes and ingested at 10-min intervals. During each trial, participants remained resting for 150 min. Measurements were made at baseline and every 30 min thereafter. RESULTS: Plasma osmolality decreased with water ingestion (P ≤ 0.023), which increased urine volume such that there was no elevation in plasma volume from baseline (P ≥ 0.059). The reduction in plasma osmolality did not occur with ingestion of solution containing 0.7% or 0.9% NaCl (P ≥ 0.051). Consequently, urine volume was 176-288 mL smaller than after water ingestion and resulted in plasma volume expansion at 60 min and later times (P ≤ 0.042). In addition, net fluid balance was 211-329 mL greater than after water ingestion (P ≤ 0.028). Adding 6% dextrin to 0.7% or 0.9% NaCl solution resulted in plasma volume expansion within as little as 30 min (P ≤ 0.026), though the magnitudes of the increases in plasma volume were unaffected (P ≥ 0.148). CONCLUSION: Dextrin mediates an earlier hypervolemic response associated with ingestion of high-sodium solution in resting euhydrated young men. (247/250 words).

This trial evaluated the effects of co-supplementing Camelina sativa oil (CSO) and a prebiotic as modulators of the gut microbiota on cardiometabolic risk factors and mental health in NAFLD patients. In all, 44 subjects with NAFLD were allocated to either an intervention (20 g d-1 CSO + resistant dextrin) or a placebo (20 g d-1 CSO + maltodextrin) group and received a calorie-restricted diet (-500 kcal d-1) for 12 weeks. Fasting plasma levels of gucose, insulin, hs-CRP, endotoxin, antioxidant enzyme activity, total antioxidant capacity (TAC), malondialdehyde (MDA), 8-iso-prostaglandin F2α, and uric acid were measured at the baseline and post-intervention. The depression, anxiety and stress scale (DASS) and the general health questionnaire (GHQ) were used to assess mental health. Co-supplementing CSO and resistant dextrin significantly decreased the level of insulin concentration (-0.84 µU ml-1, p = 0.011), HOMA-IR (-0.27, p = 0.021), hs-CRP (-1.25 pg ml-1, p = 0.023), endotoxin (-3.70 EU mL-1, p = 0.001), cortisol (-2.43, p = 0.033), GHQ (-5.03, p = 0.035), DASS (-9.01, p = 0.024), and MDA (-0.54 nmol mL-1, p = 0.021) and increased the levels of TAC (0.16 mmol L-1, p = 0.032) and superoxide dismutase (106.32 U g-1 Hb, p = 0.45) in the intervention group compared with the placebo group. No significant changes were observed in the levels of other biomarkers. Co-supplementing CSO and resistant dextrin in combination with a low-calorie diet may improve metabolic risk factors and mental health in NAFLD patients.

Herein, we entrapped Thymus vulgaris essential oil (EO) within the physically cross-linked sponge-like architecture of cryogels by ice template-assisted freeze-drying. Their 3D cryogenically-structured network was built through hydrogen bonding formed by blending two naturally-derived polysaccharides, chitosan and dextrin. The embedment of EOs within the cryogel matrix generates porous films with an increased elasticity that allows their fast shape recovery after full compression. Thus, the swollen EOs-loaded cryogel films exhibited an elastic modulus of 3.00 MPa, which is more than 40 times higher than that of polysaccharide films without EOs (an elastic modulus of only 0.07 MPa). In addition, the encapsulation of bioactive compounds endows the bio-based films with both antioxidant and antifungal properties, showing a radical scavenging activity of 65% and a zone inhibition diameter of 40 mm for Candida parapsilosis fungi. Our results recommend the entrapment of EOs into bio-based cryogel carriers as a straightforward approach to provide 'green' polysaccharide-based films having both improved physicochemical properties and remarkable antifungal activity.

PURPOSE: The effectiveness of using anti-adhesion agents in laparoscopic surgery is controversial. We compared the outcomes of patients exposed to anti-adhesion agents (barrier group) with those of patients not exposed (no barrier group) in laparoscopic surgery. METHODS: Using a nationwide claim-based database in Japan, we analyzed data from patients who underwent laparoscopic surgery between 2005 and 2019 and compared the patient characteristics and the proportion of those with bowel obstruction between the barrier and no barrier groups. We also performed several sensitivity and subgroup analyses. RESULTS: Of the 57,499 patients who met the inclusion criteria, 14,360 and 43,139 were assigned to the barrier and no barrier groups, respectively. The proportion of patients with a bowel obstruction in the two groups did not differ among all patients hospitalized for obstruction (1.1 vs. 1.1%, p = 0.63) and those requiring surgery (0.2 vs. 0.2%, p = 0.39). In the sensitivity analysis with propensity score matching, the incidences of bowel obstruction between the barrier and non-barrier groups were equivocal (1.3 vs. 1.6%), but statistically marginal (chi-square test, p = 0.035; log-rank test, p = 0.09). CONCLUSION: The use of barrier agents for adhesive prevention did not show clear effectiveness for the prevention of bowel obstruction after laparoscopic surgery for unselected cases. Further studies focusing on more specific procedures are needed.

Novel biocompatible and brush copolymers have been developed for cancer treatment using its controlled drug-release potential. Polyurethane graft on linear dextrin has been synthesized to control the hydrophilic-hydrophobic balance for regulated drug delivery. The properties of the graft copolymers have been tuned through graft density. The prepared grafts are thermally stable and mechanically strong. An injectable hydrogel has been developed by embedding the drug-loaded brush copolymers in methyl cellulose to better control the release for a prolonged period, importantly by keeping the drug release at a constant rate. Cellular studies indicate the biocompatible nature of the brush copolymers whose controlled and slow release of drug exhibit significant cytotoxic effects on cancer cells. Endocytosis of drug tagged contrast agent indicates greater transport of biologically active material inside cell as observed through cellular uptake studies. In vivo studies on melanoma mice exhibit the real efficacy of the controlled drug release from the injectable hydrogel with significant melanoma suppression without any side effects as opposed to severe toxic effects observed in conventional chemotherapy. Special application method of drug-loaded hydrogel just beneath the tumor makes this system incredibly effective through confinement. Thus, brush copolymer injectable hydrogel is a promising vehicle for control release of drug for cancer treatment in future.

Study provides an in-depth analysis of the structure-function relationship of polysaccharide anticancer drug carriers and points out benefits and potential drawbacks of differences in polysaccharide glycosidic bonding, branching and drug binding mode of the carriers. Cellulose, dextrin, dextran and hyaluronic acid have been regioselectively oxidized to respective dicarboxylated derivatives, allowing them to directly conjugate cisplatin, while preserving their major structural features intact. The structure of source polysaccharide has crucial impact on conjugation effectiveness, carrier capacity, drug release rates, in vitro cytotoxicity and cellular uptake. For example, while branched structure of dextrin-based carrier partially counter the undesirable initial burst release, it also attenuates the cellular uptake and the cytotoxicity of carried drug. Linear polysaccharides containing ß-(1→4) glycosidic bonds and oxidized at C2 and C3 (cellulose and hyaluronate) have the best overall combination of structural features for improved drug delivery applications including potentiation of the cisplatin efficacy towards malignances.

Aedes aegypti is the vector of several viral diseases. The main way to control these diseases is to fight the vector. Thus, it is necessary to breed mosquitoes in the laboratory in order to develop strategies to control these insects. In laboratories, different carbohydrates are used for feeding mosquitoes. The aim of this study is to evaluate the longevity and the weight of Ae. aegypti fed with different carbohydrates diets. As methods, 120 mosquitoes were distributed in insectaries and each group received a different diet, based on honey, dextrose or maltodextrin. To assess the longevity, survival analysis was performed using the Long Rank test and chi square test. To assess the weight, the dead insects were frozen and weighed at the end of the experiment. As results it was observed that mosquitoes fed with the honey, maltodextrin and dextrose diet lived on average 33, 35 and 47 days respectively. When weight was assessed, mosquitoes fed with honey weighed 125 ± (35.3) µg, while those fed with dextrose and maltodextrin weighed 225 ± (35.3) µg and 275 ± (35.3) µg respectively. The results show that the intake of dextrose and maltodextrin by Ae. aegypti adults increases their survival and their weight.(AU)


O Aedes aegypti é vetor de várias doenças virais. A principal maneira de controlar essas doenças é combatendo o seu vetor. Nesse sentido, é necessário criar esses mosquitos em laboratório, visando desenvolver estratégias de controle. Nos laboratórios, diferentes carboidratos são utilizados na alimentação de mosquitos. O objetivo deste estudo é avaliar longevidade e peso de Ae. aegypti alimentados com diferentes fontes de carboidratos. Como método, distribuíram-se 120 mosquitos insetários. Cada grupo recebeu uma dieta diferente à base de mel, dextrose ou maltodextrina. Para avaliar a longevidade, a análise de sobrevida foi realizada pelo teste de Logrank e pelo teste de qui quadrado. Para avaliar o peso, os insetos mortos foram congelados e pesados ​​no final do experimento. Como resultado, observou-se que os mosquitos alimentados com a dieta à base de mel, maltodextrina e dextrose viveram em média 33, 35 e 47 dias, respectivamente. Com relação ao peso, os mosquitos alimentados com mel pesavam 125 ± (35,3)µg, enquanto os alimentados com dextrose e maltodextrina pesavam 225 ± (35,3)µg e 275 ± (35,3)µg, respectivamente. Os resultados mostram que a ingestão de dieta à base de dextrose e maltodextrina por Ae. aegypti adultos aumenta sua sobrevivência e seu peso.(AU)

OBJECTIVE: Postoperative intrapericardial adhesion increases the risk of complications in patients undergoing reoperation. We investigated the effect of a bioabsorbable dextrin hydrogel (DHG) on the formation of intrapericardial adhesions. METHODS: Intrapericardial adhesion was surgically induced in Japanese white rabbits with DHG treatment (Adh + DHG) or without DHG treatment (Adh). The sham group was not treated with DHG and intrapericardial adhesion was not induced. The extent of intrapericardial adhesion was assessed by adhesion scoring and crystal violet staining of the pericardial cavity. Bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) uptake assay was performed to assess the proliferative response to the injury in the tissue beneath the intrapericardial adhesion. RESULTS: The Adh + DHG group showed looser intrapericardial adhesions compared to the Adh group. The adhesion area of the Adh + DHG group was 4.6 ± 2.2%, whereas that of the Adh group was 32.6 ± 6.4% at the end of the 28-day observation period (p < 0.01). The induction of intrapericardial adhesion resulted in a proliferative response mainly in the cardiac tissue just beneath the adhesion. There were 48.6 ± 10.7 cells/0.1 mm2 BrdU-positive cells in the Adh + DHG group and 135.7 ± 23.8 cells/0.1 mm2 BrdU-positive cells in the Adh group on day 28 (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: These findings indicate that DHG effectively prevented intrapericardial adhesion in this model.
