RESUMO

Two hens from two backyard chicken flocks were presented to a private veterinary practice specializing in poultry, both with a chief complaint of crop distention. Crop impaction was diagnosed based on physical examinations and radiographic findings. The hens were admitted for ingluviotomy surgery to remove the impacted fibrous material under local anesthesia. Even though one of the hens was diagnosed with pendulous crop, both hens recovered uneventfully after ingluviotomy and postoperative care. Follow-up examinations and interviews with the owners confirmed excellent long-term recovery.

We have developed novel stereoscopic wearable multimodal intraoperative imaging and display systems entitled Integrated Imaging Goggles for guiding surgeries. The prototype systems offer real time stereoscopic fluorescence imaging and color reflectance imaging capacity, along with in vivo handheld microscopy and ultrasound imaging. With the Integrated Imaging Goggle, both wide-field fluorescence imaging and in vivo microscopy are provided. The real time ultrasound images can also be presented in the goggle display. Furthermore, real time goggle-to-goggle stereoscopic video sharing is demonstrated, which can greatly facilitate telemedicine. In this paper, the prototype systems are described, characterized and tested in surgeries in biological tissues ex vivo. We have found that the system can detect fluorescent targets with as low as 60 nM indocyanine green and can resolve structures down to 0.25 mm with large FOV stereoscopic imaging. The system has successfully guided simulated cancer surgeries in chicken. The Integrated Imaging Goggle is novel in 4 aspects: it is (a) the first wearable stereoscopic wide-field intraoperative fluorescence imaging and display system, (b) the first wearable system offering both large FOV and microscopic imaging simultaneously,

RESUMO

This is the first report of a primary, spontaneous and, most probably, congenital teratoma in a domestic turkey, localized in front of the left eyeball. The unique localization allowed surgical excision of the tumour. The histopathological examination revealed that the tumour included structures derived from all three germ cell layers: ectoderm, mesoderm and endoderm (e.g. cartilaginous, osseous, haematopoietic, fibrous, nervous, glandular, squamous epithelial and smooth muscle tissues). The presence of epithelial cells as well as smooth muscle cells was confirmed using anti-cytokeratin and anti-desmin antibodies, respectively. The proliferative activity of the tumour cells was confirmed using proliferating cell nuclear antigen immunostaining. The other cases of teratoma in wild and domestic birds are reviewed briefly.

RESUMO

A 2-year-old DNA-sexed female Congo African grey parrot (Psittacus erithacus erithacus) was evaluated for self-trauma of the feathers and skin of the tail base for a duration of more than 1 year. All rectrices and tail coverts were missing, the skin of the tail base was thickened and ulcerated, and the uropygial gland was swollen. Results of a complete blood cell count revealed relative monocytosis and basophilia. Survey radiographs showed truncation and lysis of the caudal vertebrae and pygostyle. Results of biopsy and bacterial culture of the tail base lesions revealed an ulcerative bacterial dermatitis positive for staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec) type IV (community-acquired) methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The bird was treated with oral trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, meloxicam, fluoxetine, topical lidocaine gel, and hydrotherapy. One month later, tail feather regrowth was evident; however, follow-up over 2 years found continued self-trauma to the rectrices in spite of repeated skin biopsies negative for MRSA or other bacteria. It is unknown if the MRSA cultured from this bird was commensal or acquired from either the environment or humans to which the bird was exposed.

RESUMO

An 18-month-old, male greylag goose was presented for assessment of multiple, semi-pedunculated cutaneous masses limited to non-feathered areas of skin. Initial biopsy and histopathology revealed a mesenchymal neoplasm suggestive of lipoblastomatosis or atypical xanthoma. Immunohistochemistry was unsuccessful in determining the tissue type of origin. Surgical resection of all masses was prevented by the mucocutaneous location of several masses. Chemotherapy using intralesion cisplatin was unsuccessful in resolving the masses but was well-tolerated by the goose. Serum lipid and lipoprotein analysis revealed a persistent hypercholesterolaemia and hypertriglyceridaemia without biochemical evidence of an underlying metabolic disease. The persistent hyperlipidaemia may have contributed to the formation of the masses identified in this case.

RESUMO

An adult male Muscovy (Cairina moschata) X Peking (Anas platyrhynchos) duck had a primary malignant uveal melanoma with periocular extension involving the left eye. The periocular mass displaced the globe 1.5 cm laterally. Thoracic metastasis of the ocular neoplasm infiltrated the pectoral muscles, rib cage, and cranial lung lobe on the left side, causing diminished voluntary motion of the left wing. The left orbit was exenterated, but tumor regrowth was evident within 2 weeks. This case was unusual because melanocytic neoplasms are rare in birds.
