RESUMO

PURPOSE: To determine the thickness of the conjunctiva, episclera and sclera in healthy individuals using anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT). METHODS: We prospectively included 107 healthy individuals of different age groups (18-39 years, 40-54 years, 55-69 years and ≥70 years). For each eye, AS-OCT scans of four quadrants (temporal, nasal, superior and inferior) were acquired. The thickness of the conjunctiva, episclera and sclera was measured for each scan. In addition, the axial length of both eyes was measured, and general characteristics, including smoking, allergies and contact lens use, were collected. RESULTS: The mean conjunctival thickness was significantly different between the nasal and superior quadrants (87 ± 30 µm vs. 77 ± 16 µm; p < 0.001), as well as the superior and inferior quadrants (77 ± 16 µm vs. 86 ± 19 µm; p = 0.001). The mean episcleral thickness was larger in the superior (174 ± 54 µm) and inferior (141 ± 43 µm) quadrants, compared to the nasal (83 ± 38 µm) and temporal quadrants (90 ± 44 µm). The mean scleral thickness of the inferior quadrant was the largest (596 ± 64 µm), followed by the nasal (567 ± 76 µm), temporal (516 ± 67 µm) and superior (467 ± 52 µm) quadrants (all p < 0.001). The averaged scleral thickness increased 0.96 µm per age year (0.41-1.47 µm, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: This study provides an assessment of the thickness of scleral and adjacent superficial layers in healthy individuals determined on AS-OCT, which could enable future research into the use of AS-OCT in diseases affecting the anterior eye wall.

RESUMO

In retinoblastoma, accurate segmentation of ocular structure and tumor tissue is important when working towards personalized treatment. This retrospective study serves to evaluate the performance of multi-view convolutional neural networks (MV-CNNs) for automated eye and tumor segmentation on MRI in retinoblastoma patients. Forty retinoblastoma and 20 healthy-eyes from 30 patients were included in a train/test (N = 29 retinoblastoma-, 17 healthy-eyes) and independent validation (N = 11 retinoblastoma-, 3 healthy-eyes) set. Imaging was done using 3.0 T Fast Imaging Employing Steady-state Acquisition (FIESTA), T2-weighted and contrast-enhanced T1-weighted sequences. Sclera, vitreous humour, lens, retinal detachment and tumor were manually delineated on FIESTA images to serve as a reference standard. Volumetric and spatial performance were assessed by calculating intra-class correlation (ICC) and dice similarity coefficient (DSC). Additionally, the effects of multi-scale, sequences and data augmentation were explored. Optimal performance was obtained by using a three-level pyramid MV-CNN with FIESTA, T2 and T1c sequences and data augmentation. Eye and tumor volumetric ICC were 0.997 and 0.996, respectively. Median [Interquartile range] DSC for eye, sclera, vitreous, lens, retinal detachment and tumor were 0.965 [0.950-0.975], 0.847 [0.782-0.893], 0.975 [0.930-0.986], 0.909 [0.847-0.951], 0.828 [0.458-0.962] and 0.914 [0.852-0.958], respectively. MV-CNN can be used to obtain accurate ocular structure and tumor segmentations in retinoblastoma.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate possible changes in anterior scleral thickness and structure and changes in the anterior segment in eyes receiving multiple intravitreal injections using ultrasound biomicroscopy imaging. METHODS: Prospective, interventional, nonrandomized, cross-sectional study. Both eyes from 33 patients previously treated at least by 15 intravitreal injections in one eye only for retinal diseases were included. Intravitreal injections were performed by ophthalmologists using an aseptic standardized procedure. Ultrasound biomicroscopy examination was performed in all eyes, and scleral thickness was measured at the pars plana in four quadrants. Anterior chamber depth and ciliary body size were measured. Scleral thickness in the study eye was compared with the fellow eye. Secondary outcome measures were 1) anterior chamber depth; 2) ciliary body size; 3) scleral qualitative changes in the study eye compared with the fellow eye and 4) risk factors for scleral thinning. RESULTS: There was no statistically significant difference in scleral thickness between the study and fellow eyes when comparing each quadrant between the two eyes (P = 0.86 superotemporal; P = 0.76 superonasal; P = 0.72 inferonasal; P = 0.55 inferotemporal). Scleral thickness was neither related to the number of injections nor to the duration of treatment in the treated eye. CONCLUSION: Multiple intravitreal injections do not impact scleral thickness in a clinical practice using different injection sites.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Most organs of the human body are supplied with a dense network of blood and lymphatic vessels. However, some tissues are either hypovascular or completely devoid of vessels for proper function, such as the ocular tissues sclera and cornea, cartilage and tendons. Since many pathological conditions are affecting the human sclera, this review is focussing on the lymphangiogenic and hemangiogenic privilege in the human sclera. METHODS: This article gives an overview of the current literature based on a PubMed search as well as observations and experience from clinical practice. RESULTS: The healthy human sclera is the outer covering layer of the eye globe consisting mainly of collagenous extracellular matrix and fibroblasts. Physiologically, the sclera shows only a superficial network of blood vessels and a lack of lymphatic vessels. This vascular privilege is actively regulated by balancing anti- and proangiogenic factors expressed by cells within the sclera. In pathological situations, such as open globe injuries or ciliary body melanomas with extraocular extension, lymphatic vessels can secondarily invade the sclera and the inner eye. This mechanism most likely is important for tumor cell metastasis, wound healing, immunologic defense against intruding microorganism, and autoimmune reactions against intraocular antigens. CONCLUSIONS: The human sclera is characterized by a tightly regulated vascular network that can be compromised in pathological situations, such as injuries or intraocular tumors affecting healing outcomes Therefore, the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying wound healing following surgical interventions deserve further attention, in order to devise more effective therapeutic strategies.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To determine the most accurate method of estimating scleral-spur-to-scleral-spur (STS) distance for ophthalmologists without access to an anterior chamber optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) instrument when selecting an anterior chamber intraocular lens (AC IOL). SETTING: Robert Cizik Eye Clinic, Houston, TX. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. METHODS: The eyes of 65 participants aged 18 years or older were imaged by the Lenstar LS 900 optical biometer and CASIA SS-1000 swept-source Fourier-domain AS-OCT. Eyes were excluded if the anterior segment anatomy was significantly altered and the angle could not be visualized. When both eyes were eligible, 1 eye was randomly selected. The white-to-white (WTW) distance, STS distance, and axial length were recorded and compared. The difference between STS and horizontal WTW was calculated for each meridian. The mean (±SD) differences, 95% limits of agreement, and Bland-Altman agreement were computed for each pair of STS and WTW measurements. RESULTS: The study comprised 65 eyes of 65 participants. In nearly every case, WTW + 0.5 and WTW + 1 overestimated STS. The horizontal WTW without adjustment was the best predictor of STS. The WTW best corresponded to the vertical STS meridian (6 to 12 o'clock) and not the horizontal meridian (3 to 9 o'clock), along which AC IOLs are traditionally placed. CONCLUSIONS: The horizontal WTW method without an adjustment factor most accurately estimated STS distance and should be used to select AC IOL size when AS-OCT is not available. If AS-OCT is available, it should be used instead. In addition, AC IOLs should be placed in a vertical orientation rather than the traditional horizontal orientation to minimize sizing errors.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To assess anterior scleral canal opening (ASCO) offset relative to Bruch's membrane opening (BMO) (ASCO/BMO offset) so as to determine neural canal direction, obliqueness, and minimum cross-sectional area (NCMCA) in 362 healthy eyes. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. METHODS: After optical coherence tomography optic nerve head and retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFLT) imaging, BMO and ASCO were manually segmented. Planes, centroids, size, and shape were calculated. Neural canal direction was defined by projecting the neural canal axis vector (connecting BMO and ASCO centroids) onto the BMO plane. Neural canal obliqueness was defined by the angle between the neural canal axis and the BMO plane perpendicular vector. NCMCA was defined by projecting BMO and ASCO points onto a neural canal axis perpendicular plane and measuring the area of overlap. The angular distance between superior and inferior peak RNFLT was measured, and correlations between RFNLT, BMO, ASCO, ASCO/BMO offset, and NCMCA were assessed. RESULTS: Mean (SD) NCMCA was significantly smaller than either the BMO or ASCO area (1.33 (0.42), 1.82 (0.38), 2.22 (0.43) mm2, respectively), and most closely correlated to RNFLT (P < .001, R2 = 0.158). Neural canal direction was most commonly superior-nasal (55%). Mean neural canal obliqueness was 39.4° (17.3°). The angular distance between superior and inferior peak RNFLT correlated to neural canal direction (P ≤ .008, R2 = 0.093). CONCLUSIONS: ASCO/BMO offset underlies neural canal direction, obliqueness, and NCMCA. RNFLT is more strongly correlated to NCMCA than to BMO or ASCO, and its peripapillary distribution is influenced by neural canal direction.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Exposure of sclera below the iris in natural head positions is aesthetically undesirable. Studies on post-surgical changes in inferior scleral exposure following orthognathic surgery are scarce and mostly retrospective. The aim of this clinical trial is to examine the effect of Le Fort I osteotomy, a procedure for correction of malocclusion and maxillo-mandibular deformities, on the inferior scleral exposure and overall scleral surface area in skeletal class III patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This trial was performed on 40 eyes of 20 skeletal class III patients undergoing Le Fort I osteotomy without impaction (n = 20 eyes) and with impaction (n = 20 eyes). Standard true-size frontal photography was performed pre-operatively and post-operatively at 6 months. After measuring the overall eye height and the height of visible inferior sclera, the ratio of inferior sclera to overall eye height (S:E) was calculated three times. Also, overall surface area of the sclera was measured three times. The average of three attempts was considered the main measurement. Changes in the sclera after the surgery and between both methods were compared. RESULTS: The average age of patients (9 men, 11 women) was 24.5 years. Age and gender were balanced between the two groups (P > 0.05). S:E ratios decreased in both groups after surgery (P < 0.05, Wilcoxon test). The decrease was greater in the impaction group (P < 0.05, Mann-Whitney test). Similar results were observed for overall sclera surface areas. CONCLUSION: Maxillary advancement, with or without impaction, reduced the inferior scleral exposure and overall scleral surface area. The effect was more pronounced in the impaction group.

RESUMO

Current imaging advancements have led to emergence of pachychoroid as an association of important vision threatening diseases like chronic serous chorioretinopathy and polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy. While the precise relation between thick choroid and such disorder is being investigated, the etiology behind pachychoroid remains elusive. We hypothesize pachychoroid to be a resultant of impeded vascular outflow due to thick sclera and increased scleral rigidity. We discuss our hypothesis in the perspective of other choroidal manifestations of anomalously thick scleral structure.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Retinoblastoma is the most common intraocular tumor in childhood with a good prognosis in terms of mortality, but detailed information about tumor morphology and disease extent in retinoblastoma is important for treatment decision making. PURPOSE: To demonstrate ultrahigh-field MRI tumor morphology and tumor extent in retinoblastoma correlating with in and ex vivo images with histopathology. STUDY TYPE: Prospective case series. POPULATION: Six retinoblastoma patients (median age 5.5 months, range 2-14) were prospectively included in this study. Median time between diagnosis and enucleation was 8 days (range 7-19). FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: In vivo pre-enucleation at 1.5T MRI with a circular surface coil. Ex vivo imaging (FLASH T1 -weighted and RARE T2 -weighted) was performed at field strengths of 9.4T and 17.6T. ASSESSMENT: After ex vivo imaging, the eyes were histopathologically analyzed and morphologically matched with MRI findings by three authors (two with respectively 14 and 4 years of experience in ocular MRI and one with 16 years of experience in ophthalmopathology). RESULTS: Small submillimeter morphological aspects of intraocular retinoblastoma were successfully depicted with higher-resolution MRI and matched with histopathology images. With ex vivo MRI a small subretinal tumor seed (300 µm) adjacent to the choroid was morphologically matched with histopathology. Also, a characteristic geographical pattern of vital tumor tissue (400 µm) surrounding a central vessel interspersed with necrotic areas correlated with histopathology images. Tumor invasion into the optic nerve showed a higher signal intensity on T1 -weighted higher-resolution MRI. DATA CONCLUSION: Higher-resolution MRI allows for small morphological aspects of intraocular retinoblastoma and extraocular disease extent not visible on currently used clinical in vivo MRI to be depicted. RESUMO

PURPOSE: Surgery in endocrine orbitopathy should address exophthalmos and adjunct stigmata such as increased lid aperture and scleral show. Secondary to decompression, rehabilitative surgical treatment such as blepharoplasty is routinely used to achieve this goal. Until now, however, there has been no investigation to measure the effect of decompression surgery on scleral show and lid aperture 3-dimensionally. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ocular surface area (OSA) and lid aperture of 34 patients (67 orbits) were measured pre and post decompression surgery in a retrospective investigation using 3-dimensional (3D) stereophotogrammetry. The mean follow-up after decompression was 6 ± 4 months. RESULTS: Mean OSA ranged between 3.1 ± 1.5 cm2 (pre orbital decompression) and 2.5 ± 0.6 cm2 (post orbital decompression). Orbital decompression caused a statistically significant reduction of the surface area of about 19.4% (p < 0.001). Lid apertures showed average values between 12.7 ± 3.3 mm (pre orbital decompression) and 11.3 ± 2.2 mm (post orbital decompression). Thus orbital decompression led to a statistically significant reduction of the palpebral fissure of about 11% (p < 0.001). OSA correlated with lid aperture pre and post surgery (p < 0.001). The extent of OSA reduction showed no correlation with the amount of exophthalmos reduction. CONCLUSION: Our results show that surgical decompression, besides correcting exophthalmos, leads to a significant reduction of scleral show and lid aperture. However, it is not possible to estimate its effect on an individual basis.

RESUMO

Retinoblastoma and uveal melanoma are fast spreading eye tumors usually diagnosed by using 2D Fundus Image Photography (Fundus) and 2D Ultrasound (US). Diagnosis and treatment planning of such diseases often require additional complementary imaging to confirm the tumor extend via 3D Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). In this context, having automatic segmentations to estimate the size and the distribution of the pathological tissue would be advantageous towards tumor characterization. Until now, the alternative has been the manual delineation of eye structures, a rather time consuming and error-prone task, to be conducted in multiple MRI sequences simultaneously. This situation, and the lack of tools for accurate eye MRI analysis, reduces the interest in MRI beyond the qualitative evaluation of the optic nerve invasion and the confirmation of recurrent malignancies below calcified tumors. In this manuscript, we propose a new framework for the automatic segmentation of eye structures and ocular tumors in multi-sequence MRI. Our key contribution is the introduction of a pathological eye model from which Eye Patient-Specific Features (EPSF) can be computed. These features combine intensity and shape information of pathological tissue while embedded in healthy structures of the eye. We assess our work on a dataset of pathological patient eyes by computing the Dice Similarity Coefficient (DSC) of the sclera, the cornea, the vitreous humor, the lens and the tumor. In addition, we quantitatively show the superior performance of our pathological eye model as compared to the segmentation obtained by using a healthy model (over 4% DSC) and demonstrate the relevance of our EPSF, which improve the final segmentation regardless of the classifier employed.

RESUMO

The cornea provides protection and transparency to the eye, allowing an optimal sharpness view. In some pathological conditions the cornea is able to regenerate thanks to the presence of a stem cells reservoir present at the level of the transition area between cornea and sclera (limbus). Corneal cell therapies in Veterinary Medicine are really limited due to the lacking of knowledge about the anatomy of the limbal area, the putative presence of stem cells and their identification in domestic species. The aim of this study was to provide an overview of the main distinctive structural features of the sclero-corneal junction and conjunctival-corneal junction areas in some species of veterinary importance, using optic microscope observations of histological sections. The resulting data were compared with cornea from humans adapting protocols already used to identify stem cells by means of a specific cellular marker. We tested the expression of ΔNp63α isoform in the cornea basal cells, trying to correlate the distribution profile with areas of highly proliferative turnover. The results obtained from this study represent a first step towards the identification of a corneal stem cells reservoir in different animals.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To characterize grossly, histologically, and via computed tomography (CT) the appearance of intrascleral cartilage, bone, or both in domestic goats with otherwise normal eyes and to correlate this with age, sex, and breed. ANIMALS STUDIED: Sixty-eight domestic goats (89 eyes). PROCEDURES: Forty-nine formalin-fixed globes from 38 goats underwent high-resolution CT, and gross and light microscopic examination. An additional 40 eyes from 30 goats underwent light microscopy only. Age, breed, and sex of affected goats were retrieved from medical records. RESULTS: Considering all methods of evaluation collectively, cartilage was detected in 42% of eyes (44% of goats) and bone in 11% of eyes (12% of goats); bone was never seen without cartilage. Goats in which bone, cartilage, or both were detected ranged from 0.25 to 13 (median = 3.5) years of age, represented 11 of 12 breeds of the study population, and had a male:female ratio of 11:19. Bone was detected in the eyes of significantly more males (n = 8) than females (n = 2). No sex predilection was noted for cartilage alone. Histology revealed intrascleral chondrocyte-like cells, hyaline cartilage, and islands of lamellar bone. Some regions of bone had central, adipose-rich, marrow-like cavities. CT localized mineralized tissue as adjacent to or partially surrounding the optic nerve head. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first report of intrascleral bone or cartilage in a normal goat and of intrascleral bone in an otherwise normal mammal. The high prevalence of intrascleral cartilage and bone in this study suggests that this finding is normal and likely represents an adaptation in goats.

RESUMO

Scleral tissue has been in use in ophthalmology for many years although indications for use have varied. We retrospectively reviewed scleral transplant tissue requests over a 12 month period at a local eye bank and confirmed a small but significant demand for the use of scleral tissue. Iatrogenic surgical complications are the primary indication for use. Our understanding of the indications and outcomes of scleral graft procedures is derived from case reports and small cohort series. We reviewed the current literature on existing indications for its use and discuss the relative outcomes. To our knowledge this represents the first review of scleral transplant indications and further summarises usage rates in the Lions NSW Eye Bank which may provide practical information for those surgeons who use scleral tissue and Eye Banks who supply it.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The Kufner modified Le Fort III osteotomy (LFIII) can be used to address midface deficiency, which is often accompanied by excessive scleral exposure. The purpose of this project is to analyze the changes in scleral exposure after a LFIII. METHODS: Thirteen patients with midface hypoplasia were treated with LFIII. Scleral surface area (SSA) was determined by pixel count and the distance from the inferior eyelid margin to the center of the pupil (MED) was measured pre- and postoperatively. Intraclass correlation coefficients were calculated to assess measurement reliability and repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) were determined to assess systematic difference among the replicates. RESULTS: The interquartile range for change in SSA ranged from -31% to -7%, median 20% (P = .002) and the interquartile range for change in MED ranged from -21% to -12%, median -18% (P = .0002). CONCLUSIONS: SSA and MED can be reliably determined using the aforementioned method. The LFIII decreases scleral exposure.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Proper delineation of ocular anatomy in 3-dimensional (3D) imaging is a big challenge, particularly when developing treatment plans for ocular diseases. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is presently used in clinical practice for diagnosis confirmation and treatment planning for treatment of retinoblastoma in infants, where it serves as a source of information, complementary to the fundus or ultrasonographic imaging. Here we present a framework to fully automatically segment the eye anatomy for MRI based on 3D active shape models (ASM), and we validate the results and present a proof of concept to automatically segment pathological eyes. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Manual and automatic segmentation were performed in 24 images of healthy children's eyes (3.29 ± 2.15 years of age). Imaging was performed using a 3-T MRI scanner. The ASM consists of the lens, the vitreous humor, the sclera, and the cornea. The model was fitted by first automatically detecting the position of the eye center, the lens, and the optic nerve, and then aligning the model and fitting it to the patient. We validated our segmentation method by using a leave-one-out cross-validation. The segmentation results were evaluated by measuring the overlap, using the Dice similarity coefficient (DSC) and the mean distance error. RESULTS: We obtained a DSC of 94.90 ± 2.12% for the sclera and the cornea, 94.72 ± 1.89% for the vitreous humor, and 85.16 ± 4.91% for the lens. The mean distance error was 0.26 ± 0.09 mm. The entire process took 14 seconds on average per eye. CONCLUSION: We provide a reliable and accurate tool that enables clinicians to automatically segment the sclera, the cornea, the vitreous humor, and the lens, using MRI. We additionally present a proof of concept for fully automatically segmenting eye pathology. This tool reduces the time needed for eye shape delineation and thus can help clinicians when planning eye treatment and confirming the extent of the tumor.

Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the expression of the intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1) in the sclera and choroid of hypercholesterolemic rabbits Methods: New Zealand rabbits were divided into two groups: the normal diet group (NG), with 8 rabbits (8 eyes), was fed a standard rabbit diet for 4 weeks; the hypercholesterolemic group (HG), with 13 rabbits (13 eyes), was fed a 1% cholesterol- enriched diet for 8 weeks. Total serum cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL cholesterol and fasting blood glucose exams were performed at the start of the experiment and at the euthanasia time. HG and NG animals were euthanized after 8th week and 4th week, respectively. Their eyes were stained with hematoxylin-eosin and underwent histological, histomorphometric and immunohistochemical analyses with ICAM-1 antibody. Results: The diet has induced a significant increase in total cholesterol and triglyceride levels in HG when compared with NG (p<0.001). The histological analysis with hematoxylin-eosin revealed a large number of macrophages in the HG sclera-choroid complex. Moreover, a significant increase in the HG sclera and choroid thickness was observed in relation to NG (p<0.001). There was a significant increase in the ICAM-1 expression in HG sclera and choroid in relation to NG Conclusion: This study has revealed that the hypercholesterolemic diet induces an increase in the ICAM-1 expression in the rabbits’ sclera and choroid. .

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of blocking the angiotensin II AT-1 receptor by the systemic administration of candesartan on the expression of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 in the sclera and choroid of hypercholesterolemic rabbits. METHODS: New Zealand rabbits were divided into 3 groups, as follows: GI, which was fed a rabbit standard diet; GII, which was fed a hypercholesterolemic diet; and GIII, which received hypercholesterolemic diet plus candesartan. Samples of the rabbits' sclera and choroid were then studied by hematoxylin-eosin staining and histomorphometric and immunohistochemical analyses for intercellular adhesion molecule-1 expression. RESULTS: Histological analysis of hematoxylin- and eosin-stained sclera and choroid revealed that macrophages were rarely present in GI, and GII had significantly increased macrophage numbers compared to GIII. Moreover, in GII, the sclera and choroid morphometry showed a significant increase in thickness in comparison to GI and GIII. GIII presented a significant increase in thickness in relation to GI. Sclera and choroid immunohistochemical analysis for intercellular adhesion molecule-1 expression revealed a significant increase in immunoreactivity in GII in relation to GI and GIII. GIII showed a significant increase in immunoreactivity in relation to GI. CONCLUSION: Candesartan reduced the expression of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 and consequently macrophage accumulation in the sclera and choroid of hypercholesterolemic rabbits.

RESUMO

An accurate analysis of the thickness and volume of choroid using optical coherence tomography (OCT) requires precise visualization of the choroido-scleral interface. Results of studies that use spectral-domain OCT (SD-OCT) to look at the percent visualization of the choroido-scleral interface for accurate analysis of choroidal thickness show varying success rates. This study assessed the visualization of choroido-scleral interface in 19 healthy participants (19 eyes) prospectively recruited for consecutive high-definition raster scanning with an SD-OCT system with and without enhanced depth imaging (EDI) and a prototype long-wavelength swept-source OCT (SS-OCT) system. Choroido-scleral interface was visualized in all eyes imaged on SS-OCT, compared with 13 of 19 (68.4%) and 14 of 19 (73.6%) eyes imaged on SD-OCT without EDI (P = .009) and with EDI (P = .02), respectively. The prototype long-wavelength SS-OCT system, with its higher acquisition speed and deeper tissue penetration, may have better clinical utility in determining the involvement of choroid in various chorioretinal diseases.
