Research has indicated a negative impact of physical activity on academic burnout among students, however, there is a paucity of evidence about the underlying mechanism of this association in Pakistani students. The present research seeks to investigate the relationship between physical activity and academic burnout by investigating the potential mediating effects of adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MD) and body mass index (BMI). A sample of 596 students using a cross-sectional survey design was gathered from two public universities (Riphah International University and Mohammed Ali Jinnah University) in Rawalpindi, Pakistan from June to July 2022. The study participants were asked to fill out the Physical Activity Rating Scale-3, the Learning Burnout Scale, and the Test of Adherence to MD questionnaires. The study employed descriptive, bivariate, and path analysis through regression utilizing the SPSS software version 27. The findings demonstrated a negative correlation between academic burnout and BMI, physical activity, and adherence to the MD. The relationship between physical activity and academic burnout was mediated by BMI. Physical activity and academic burnout were inversely correlated, with adherence to the MD and BMI interacting as sequential mediators. The outcomes of this research have expanded our knowledge of the association between physical activity and academic burnout and have suggested crucial and appropriate strategies for addressing student academic burnout.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: There is a significant impact of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) on individuals of all ages, professions, and fields from various countries worldwide, leading to a negative impact on quality of life and overall health outcomes. The study was conducted to investigate the association between Burnout syndrome (BS) and MSDs among physiotherapists in Saudi Arabia. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out. Physiotherapists of either gender and with no known co-morbidities and who were not suffering from recent injuries and accidents were included in the study. The Copenhagen Burnout Inventory was used to determine the level of burnout. Musculoskeletal disorders were analyzed using the Standardized Nordic Questionnaire (NMQ). The chi-square test was used to observe the association between two categorical variables and a p-value <0.05 was considered to be statistically significant. RESULTS: A total of 133 participants were recruited and it was observed that 70 (53%) participants had low burnout levels (BoL). It was revealed that 65 (49%) had trouble in the neck and visited a physician clinic, 47 (35%) had trouble in the lower back during the last 12 months, 60 (45%) had trouble in the upper back during the last 12 months that prevented the normal activity and 13 (9.8%) participants had trouble in the shoulders during the last 7 days. History of chronic disease, education, practice setting, and smoking status with Burnout level was statistically significant. Trouble in the upper back, elbow, wrist/hands, hips/thighs, ankle/feet, and neck were also found to be significant. CONCLUSION: The outcomes revealed that a few demographic factors such as education, practice setting, smoking status, and chronic disease history were significantly associated with BS. Furthermore, it was observed that MSD had a significant impact on BoL.

BACKGROUND: Palliative care and oncology generate a risk of burnout and psychological distress in professionals. The purpose of this study is to identify both psychopathological and positive factors related to mental health at work. It aims (i) to explore the extent to which these professionals are confronted with suffering, illness, and death; and to explore the prevalence of psychological distress and/or burnout, (ii) to identify potential determinants of burnout and psychological wellbeing at work, (iii) to develop an integrative model of mental health; and to identify frequency and impact of confrontations with death, and (iv) to identify profiles of professionals are at risk of developing a mental health disorder or, conversely, characterized by wellbeing. METHODS: A cross-sectional questionnaire study was conducted in palliative care and oncology evaluating confrontations with death, coping, burnout, psychological distress, personality, self-esteem, well-being and meaning at work. Regressions, clustering, and structural equation modeling analyses were performed. RESULTS: 109 professionals participated (58% from oncology and 42% from palliative care), of which 79% were female, and 65% were between 30 and 49 years old. Aim i: 30% witnessed an intolerable suffering at least 9 times a month, 45% reported moderate to high levels of burnout, 39% suffered from anxiety and 11% from depression. Aim ii: the determinants of burnout were the personality traits conscientiousness and neuroticism, low meaning of work, and low wellbeing (R2 = 0.44). The determinants of wellbeing were work meaning, depersonalization, self-esteem, fulfillment and low emotional exhaustion (R2 = 0.71). Aim iii: the integrative model included both well-being (self-esteem, conscientiousness) and psychopathology (neuroticism, anxiety) parameters, and strongly satisfied the standard SEM goodness of fit indices (e.g., CFI, IFI, and TLI ≥ 0.95). Aim iv: three profiles were identified: (a) a "distressed profile" with a majority of professionals at the patient's bedside, (b) a "disengaged profile" with professionals working as second-line consultants, (c) a "wellbeing profile" contains profiles of caregivers insensitive to psychological distress and with a high level of positive Impact of confrontation on different areas of their lives. CONCLUSIONS: An integrative approach is essential to understand the full range of mental health issues for professionals. Meaning of work is a key factor in professional interventions that should primarily affect front-line professionals with limited experience.

PURPOSE: This overview of reviews aimed to summarize the prevalence of burnout and the dimensions of burnout (emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment) in oncology professionals around the world. METHODS: The CINAHL, Embase, PsycINFO, and PubMed databases were searched from inception to September 13, 2023. AMSTAR 2 was used to assess the quality of reviews. The overlap between reviews was calculated. RESULTS: Twelve reviews were included. Overall, reviews showed that burnout was prevalent in oncologists and oncology nurses. On the other hand, no reviews meta-analyzed the prevalence of burnout in oncology radiation therapists. In addition, the dimensions of burnout, high emotional exhaustion, high depersonalization, and low personal accomplishment were highly prevalent across reviews in oncologists, oncology nurses, and oncology radiation therapists. In oncologists, the Americas (specifically Canada) showed the highest prevalence rates for high emotional exhaustion, whereas high depersonalization and low personal accomplishment were mainly prevalent in Europe and Asia, respectively. In oncology nurses, high emotional exhaustion and high depersonalization were mainly prevalent in Asia, whereas low personal accomplishment was more prevalent in the Americas (specifically Canada). The prevalence of overall levels of burnout was not meta-analyzed by continents. CONCLUSION: Some methodological improvements may help to make more robust the findings of this overview (e.g., specific subgroup meta-analyses by oncology specialties), which may help readers reach more precise, direct, and consistent findings. PURPOSE: Mentorship has a positive influence on trainee skills and well-being. A 2022 Pilot Mentorship Program in New South Wales involving 40 participants revealed high burnout rates in Medical Oncology trainees. As part of an Australia-wide inaugural National Oncology Mentorship Program in 2023 (NOMP23), a national survey was undertaken to assess the prevalence of burnout, anxiety, depression, professional fulfilment, and drivers of distress in the Australian medical oncology workforce. METHODS: NOMP23 is a 1-year prospective cohort study that recruited medical oncology trainees and consultants using e-mail correspondence between February and March 2023. Each participant completed a baseline survey which included the Maslach Burnout Index (MBI), Stanford Professional Fulfilment Index, and Patient Health Questionnaire-4 for anxiety and depression. RESULTS: One hundred and twelve participants (56 mentors, 56 mentees) were enrolled in NOMP23, of which 86 (77%) completed the baseline survey. MBI results at baseline demonstrated that 77% of consultants and 82% of trainees experienced burnout in the past 12 months. Professional fulfilment was noted to be <5% in our cohort. Screening rates of anxiety and depression in trainees were 32% and 16%, respectively, compared with 7% and 2% for consultants. When assessing reasons for workplace stress, two thirds stated that heavy patient load contributed to stress, while almost three quarters attributed a heavy administrative load. Lack of supervision was a key stressor for trainees (39%), as was lack of support from the training college (58%). CONCLUSION: Trainees and consultant medical oncologists demonstrate high rates of burnout and low professional fulfilment. The NOMP23 program has identified a number of key stress factors driving burnout and demonstrated concerning levels of anxiety and depression. Ongoing mentorship and other well-being initiatives are needed to address these issues.

ABSTRACT: During the COVID-19 pandemic, there was an unprecedented growth in telemedicine due to the need to provide safe access to care during a global pandemic. The regulatory, compliance, and payment policy landscape favorably changed, paving the way for growth in utilization. Despite these favorable changes in the landscape, operational and technical burdens remained barriers to optimal use of telemedicine. Investments in operational processes and vendor selection can improve the patient and clinician experience in using telemedicine, so this digital tool can diminish burnout.

Documenting surgical supply items in the operating room can be a burdensome task for circulating nurses because of manual input within the electronic medical record. This can lead to documentation fatigue and contribute to nursing burnout. The aim of this quality improvement project was to design and implement a supply item scanning process and evaluate the effect on intraoperative documentation completion time, room turnover time, picklist documentation accuracy, nurse satisfaction, and burnout. The sample included nine acute care hospitals throughout the United States, with 189 total circulating nurses and 31 718 procedures occurring during the study timeframe of 8 months. Results indicated that nurses were able to complete documentation on average 37.33 minutes sooner, and the operating room turnover time decreased by 1.88 minutes. Although nurses reported that their perceived picklist documentation accuracy did not improve, and the presence of new scanning technology did not influence their hospital employment decision, subjective feedback was mostly positive, with most responses citing the helpfulness of scanning for documentation. This study shows that an interdisciplinary team can effectively work to optimize documentation efficiency and performance improvement using a scanning intervention. Lessons learned through this process can translate into optimizations elsewhere in the electronic medical record.

OBJECTIVE: Assess the prevalence of self-reported burnout and identify risk and protective factors based on demographic and life quality aspects, among Latin American orthopaedic surgeons. METHODS: This study employed a cross-sectional analytical design. An original design survey was developed using multiple-choice and Likert-scale questions to gather self-reported burnout, demographic, work-related, social, personal, and mood-related data. The survey was electronically distributed to the Chilean Orthopaedic Surgery Society and the Latin American Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery, and Sports Medicine members. Statistical analysis included Chi-square and Fisher's exact tests to determine associations between self-reported burnout and other variables. Subsequently, a multivariate logistic regression was carried out to identify key risk and protective factors (p â€‹< â€‹0.05). RESULTS: The survey's response rate was 20 â€‹% (n â€‹= â€‹358) out of the 1779 invitations that were sent. The most representative age range was 41-60 years (50 â€‹%) and 94 â€‹% were men. Of those surveyed, 50 â€‹% reported a burnout episode more than once per year, 60 â€‹% depersonalization when treating patients at least yearly, 13 â€‹% anhedonia, 11 â€‹% a depressive mood more than half of the month or almost every day, and 61 â€‹% weariness at the end of a working day. Burnout was statistically associated with age under 40 years old (p â€‹= â€‹0.012), fewer years as a specialist (p â€‹= â€‹0.037), fear of lawsuits (p â€‹< â€‹0.001), a non-healthy diet (p â€‹= â€‹0.003), non-doing recreational activities (p â€‹= â€‹0.004), depersonalization when treating their patients (p â€‹< â€‹0.001), weariness (p â€‹< â€‹0.001), anhedonia (p â€‹< â€‹0.001), depressive mood (p â€‹< â€‹0.001), and career dissatisfaction (p â€‹< â€‹0.001). The logistic regression demonstrated that fear of lawsuits (p â€‹< â€‹0.001), weariness at the end of a workday (p â€‹= â€‹0.016), and anhedonia (p â€‹= â€‹0.019) were those variables with stronger direct associations with self-reported burnout. A healthy diet was the strongest protective variable (p â€‹< â€‹0.001). CONCLUSION: Over 50 â€‹% of the Latin American orthopaedic surgeons who participated in the survey reported experiencing burnout episodes more than once a year, along with depersonalization when treating their patients at least once a year. Additionally, nearly 10 â€‹% of respondents experienced weekly depressive symptoms. Among the noteworthy risk factors for self-reported burnout were fear of lawsuits, weariness at the end of the workday, and anhedonia. Conversely, maintaining a healthy diet emerged as the most potent protective factor. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level III.

Aim: Burnout syndrome describes the state of long-term physical, emotional and mental exhaustion related to work. This syndrome can cause health problems related to stress, insomnia, cardiovascular and musculoskeletal diseases, including an increase in alcohol consumption and drug use. It is important to recognize the presence of the initial signs of this syndrome, therefore this study aimed to determine the prevalence of the burnout syndrome in peruvian dental students. Methods: The study was observational, cross-sectional, and descriptive. It was carried out from September to November 2018, and it included a total of 154 dental students of four universities of La Libertad region, surveyed by census method. Three were private universities and one was public. Burnout was evaluated through the Maslach Burnout Student Survey Questionnaire (MBI-SS). The results were presented in absolute and percentage frequencies, as well as confidence intervals, using double-entry tables. Results: It was found that 24.68% of the students (24.71% in male students and 24.64% in female students) presented burnout syndrome. The public university of Trujillo presented the highest percentage of affected students (47.37%). A prevalence of 53,90% of emotional exhaustion was also found among the students under evaluation. Conclusions: Almost a quarter of the students surveyed presented burnout. It was also observed that the public University of Trujillo had a higher percentage of burnout than the three private ones. The percentage of prevalence of the burnout syndrome according to sex was similar. However according to dimensions, emotional exhaustion presented the highest percentage

BACKGROUND: Humor has been commonly used in palliative care and identified as a coping strategy of palliative care patients and family caregivers. However, the use of humor or laughter in palliative care settings is still limited. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine the effect of laughter therapy involving spontaneous laughter on mood disturbances and pain in terminally ill patients with cancer and mood disturbances and the levels of burnout in family caregivers. METHODS: This quasi-experimental study used a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. The laughter therapy developed was provided for 20 to 30 minutes a day for 5 consecutive days. Twenty-six pairs of terminally ill cancer patients and family caregivers in the intervention group and 23 pairs in the comparison group from the hospice ward of a tertiary teaching hospital participated in this study. The data were collected using structured questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics and 2-way repeated-measures analysis of variance. RESULTS: There were significant decreases in mood disturbances in the patients ( P < .001) and family caregivers ( P < .001), pain in the patients ( P < .001), and levels of burnout in the caregivers ( P < .001) in the intervention group. CONCLUSION: Laughter therapy can be an alternative intervention to support both terminally ill patients with cancer and their family caregivers experiencing multidimensional distress in palliative care settings. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: The appropriate use of laughter or humor therapy needs to be encouraged as a support tool in palliative care. Palliative care teams must be properly trained to provide spontaneous laughter therapy or planned humor therapy.

Introdução: Estudos indicam que os profissionais de saúde têm alto risco de desenvolver sintomas relacionados à saúde mental, especialmente depressão, ansiedade e estresse. Objetivo: identificar e sintetizar os estudos sobre os preditores relacionados a saúde mental entre enfermeiros que atuam na linha de frente no combate ao COVID- 19. Método: Trata-se de uma revisão de escopo, sem limitação de linguagem e ano, nas bases BVS, PubMed, SCIELO, CINAHL, SCOPUS, Web of Science, MedNar, CAPES e ProQuest. Foi realizada síntese narrativa. Resultados: A pandemia da COVID-19 trouxe sérios impactos a saúde mental dos profissionais de enfermagem, os achados revelaram cinco temas principais sentimento de insegurança, falta de equipamentos de proteção individual, falta de exames diagnósticos, mudanças no fluxo de atendimento e medo do desconhecido. Existe uma associação significativa entre o bem-estar físico e metal e a produtividade laboral. Conclusão: Destaca-se os desafios enfrentados pelos enfermeiros no combate da COVID-19, mesmo com a repercussões no ambiente de trabalho os enfermeiros ainda padecem de reconhecimento adequado que incluem situações de estresse, ansiedade, depressão e estão diretamente relacionadas à frustração, esgotamento físico e mental, sentimento de impotência e insegurança profissional vivenciados durante a pandemia, principalmente por jovens profissionais sem experiência no cuidado de pacientes críticos.


Introduction: Studies indicate that health professionals are at high risk of developing symptoms related to mental health, especially depression, anxiety and stress. Objective: identify and synthesize studies on mental health-related predictors among nurses who work on the front line in the fight against COVID-19. Method: This is a scope review, without language and year limitations, in the VHL, PubMed, SCIELO, CINAHL, SCOPUS, Web of Science, MedNar, CAPES and ProQuest databases. Narrative synthesis was performed. Results: The COVID-19 pandemic had serious impacts on the mental health of nursing professionals, the findings revealed five main themes: feeling of insecurity, lack of personal protective equipment, lack of diagnostic tests, changes in the flow of care and fear of the unknown. There is a significant association between physical and mental well-being and labor productivity. Conclusion: The challenges faced by nurses in the fight against COVID-19 are highlighted, even with the repercussions in the work environment, nurses still suffer from adequate recognition and include situations of stress, anxiety and even depression, which are directly related to frustration , physical and mental exhaustion, feeling of helplessness and professional insecurity experienced during the pandemic, especially by young professionals with no experience in caring for critically ill patients.


Introducción: Los estudios indican que los profesionales de la salud tienen un alto riesgo de desarrollar síntomas relacionados con la salud mental, especialmente depresión, ansiedad y estrés. Objetivo: identificar y sintetizar estudios sobre predictores relacionados a la salud mental entre enfermeros que trabajan en primera línea en la lucha contra el COVID-19. Método: Se trata de una revisión de alcance, sin limitaciones de idioma y año, en las bases de datos BVS, PubMed, SCIELO, CINAHL, SCOPUS, Web of Science, MedNar, CAPES y ProQuest. Se realizó una síntesis narrativa. Resultados: La pandemia de COVID-19 tuvo graves impactos en la salud mental de los profesionales de enfermería, los hallazgos revelaron cinco temas principales: sensación de inseguridad, falta de equipo de protección personal, falta de pruebas diagnósticas, cambios en el flujo de atención y miedo a lo desconocido. Existe una asociación significativa entre el bienestar físico y mental y la productividad laboral. Conclusiones: Se destacan los retos a los que se enfrentan las enfermeras en la lucha contra la COVID-19, aún con las repercusiones en el ámbito laboral, las enfermeras siguen sufriendo un reconocimiento adecuado e incluyen situaciones de estrés, ansiedad e incluso depresión, que están directamente relacionadas con la frustración , el agotamiento físico y mental, la sensación de impotencia y la inseguridad profesional experimentada durante la pandemia, especialmente por profesionales jóvenes sin experiencia en el cuidado de pacientes críticos.

PURPOSE: COVID-19 disrupted cancer care services in Ireland, from screening and diagnostics to treatments, possibly impacting physical health outcomes owing to delayed diagnosis and treatment changes. This study explores how cancer care and patients in Ireland were affected by COVID-19 from the perspective of Irish policy, clinical and patient stakeholders using a qualitative approach. The findings could inform future strategic and implementation plans for the current challenges faced and lessons learned will be identified. METHODS: A thematic analysis of a multi-stakeholder online workshop representing policy and clinical and patient stakeholders was completed. RESULTS: The pandemic exasperated prior challenges including under-resourced services, access barriers, staff shortages and lack of interoperability in information technology (IT) systems. Overall, the measures implemented protected cancer patients from COVID-19; however, some groups were more vulnerable, with apparent demographic and socio-economic inequalities. Many hard-fought gains from the previous decade, in terms of cancer screening, diagnosis and survivorship, were eroded. As we transition to the peri-COVID-19 period, staff burnout, poor IT infrastructure and lack of good quality data must be addressed to minimise further disruptions and restore and enhance cancer services. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, innovations and measures adopted during the pandemic protected cancer patients; however, some groups were particularly vulnerable, and inequalities may have widened further. Only proven effective and efficient innovations introduced during the pandemic should be retained and enhanced. Good quality data is needed to inform such decisions when choosing amongst them.

BACKGROUND: As a professional group, physicians are at increased risk of burnout and job stress, both of which are associated with an increased risk of coronary heart disease that is at least as high as that of other professionals. This study aimed to examine the association of burnout and job stress with coronary microvascular function, a predictor of major adverse cardiovascular events. METHODS: Thirty male physicians with clinical burnout and 30 controls without burnout were included. Burnout was assessed with the Maslach Burnout Inventory and job stress with the effort-reward imbalance and overcommitment questionnaire. All participants underwent myocardial perfusion positron emission tomography to quantify endothelium-dependent (cold pressor test) and endothelium-independent (adenosine challenge) coronary microvascular function. Burnout and job stress were regressed on coronary flow reserve (primary outcome) and two additional measures of coronary microvascular function in the same model while adjusting for age and body mass index. RESULTS: Burnout and job stress were significantly and independently associated with endothelium-dependent microvascular function. Burnout was positively associated with coronary flow reserve, myocardial blood flow response, and hyperemic myocardial blood flow (r partial = 0.28 to 0.35; p-value = 0.008 to 0.035). Effort-reward ratio (r partial = - 0.32 to - 0.38; p-value = 0.004 to 0.015) and overcommitment (r partial = - 0.30 to - 0.37; p-value = 0.005 to 0.022) showed inverse associations with these measures. CONCLUSIONS: In male physicians, burnout and high job stress showed opposite associations with coronary microvascular endothelial function. Longitudinal studies are needed to show potential clinical implications and temporal relationships between work-related variables and coronary microvascular function. Future studies should include burnout and job stress for a more nuanced understanding of their potential role in cardiovascular health.

Abstract Objective: to analyze the association between moral distress and Burnout Syndrome among nurses in a university hospital. Method: descriptive, analytical study conducted with 269 nurses working in a university hospital located in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Data were collected in person in 2019 by previously trained collectors. A sociodemographic and employment questionnaire, the Brazilian Scale of Moral Distress in Nurses and the Maslach Burnout Inventory were applied. Descriptive and analytical statistical analysis was used. Results: an association was identified between moral distress intensity and frequency and its dimensions with Burnout Syndrome and its dimensions. Nurses with low professional achievement and high emotional exhaustion showed a higher prevalence of moral distress. Conclusion: an association between moral distress and Burnout Syndrome, as well as between their dimensions, was evidenced. The results suggest the need to investigate urgent interventions to mitigate the situations and manifestations of moral distress and Burnout Syndrome by developing strategies for workers' health.


Resumo Objetivo: analisar a associação entre sofrimento moral e síndrome de Burnout em enfermeiros de hospital universitário. Método: estudo descritivo-analítico, realizado com 269 enfermeiros atuantes em um hospital universitário localizado no Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. A coleta de dados ocorreu de maneira presencial no ano de 2019 por coletadores previamente capacitados. Aplicaram-se questionário sociodemográfico e laboral, Escala Brasileira de Distresse Moral em Enfermeiros e o Inventário Maslach de Burnout. Empregou-se análise estatística descritiva e analítica. Resultados: identificou-se associação entre intensidade e frequência de sofrimento moral e suas dimensões com a síndrome de Burnout e suas dimensões. Enfermeiros em baixa realização profissional e alta exaustão emocional apresentaram prevalências mais elevadas para sofrimento moral. Conclusão: evidenciou-se a associação entre sofrimento moral e síndrome de Burnout bem como entre suas dimensões. Os resultados sinalizam a necessidade de investigar intervenções urgentes para amenizar as situações e as manifestações do sofrimento moral e a síndrome de Burnout, elaborando estratégias para a saúde dos trabalhadores.

Método: estudio descriptivo y analítico, realizado en 269 enfermeros que actuaban en un hospital universitario localizado en el estado de Rio Grande del Sur, en Brasil. La recogida de datos se realizó de manera presencial en el año de 2019 por colectores previamente capacitados. Se aplicaron el cuestionario sociodemográfico y laboral, la Escala Brasileña de Estrés Moral en Enfermeros y el Inventario Maslach de Burnout. Se empleó el análisis estadístico descriptivo y analítico. Resultados: se identificó asociación entre intensidad y frecuencia de sufrimiento moral y sus dimensiones con el síndrome de Burnout y sus dimensiones. Los enfermeros que tuvieron baja realización profesional y alta extenuación emocional, presentaron prevalencias más elevadas para el sufrimiento moral. Conclusión: se evidenció asociación entre sufrimiento moral y síndrome de Burnout así como entre sus dimensiones. Los resultados señalan la necesidad urgente de investigar intervenciones para amenizar las situaciones y las manifestaciones del sufrimiento moral y el síndrome de Burnout, elaborando estrategias para la salud de los trabajadores.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Burnout syndrome (BS) has been evaluated in few populations of medical students, and its relationship with depression is even less studied. The objective was to determine the frequency of BS in medical students of the Universidad Pedagógica y Tecnológica de Colombia (UPTC), in Tunja, Colombia, as well as its association with depression and other social, economic, demographic, and academic factors. METHODS: An observational, analytical, cross-sectional study was carried out on 182 UPTC medical students during 2018. The Maslach Burnout Inventory-Student Survey (MBI-SS) was applied, with which 3 components were obtained to determine positive SB. This was crossed in the Stata 15 program for depression and other social, economic, demographic, and academic covariates with the Generalised Linear Model (GLM). RESULTS: Of 182 respondents, 51.4% were women. The median age was 21 years (20-23 years). 14% had BS, of which 48% had depression. In the multiple regression, BS was significantly associated with a higher frequency of depression (RPa = 5.54; IC95%, 2.36-13.02; P < 0.001) and the feeling of insufficient money (RPa = 4.37; IC95%, 1.95-9.83; P < 0.001), in contrast to a negative association with smoking (RPa = 0.13; IC95%, 0.06-0.30; P < 0.001) and being a woman (RPa = 0.32; IC95%, 0.12-0.82; P = 0.018). The age of onset of marijuana use was not significant. CONCLUSIONS: BS shows a high association with increased depression and a feeling that the money is not enough at the end of the month, but it showed a negative association with tobacco consumption and being a woman. Such students should be detected to provide them with adequate academic support.

INTRODUCTION: The healthcare sector is the most studied area of burnout, as the mental health of healthcare workers has a significant impact on the mental health of the people they care for. OBJECTIVE: The aim of our study was to investigate whether there have been changes in the dimensions of burnout among midwives, and how the relationships between burnout and the individual factors and working conditions that influence it have evolved, using national data from 2014 and 2022. METHOD: An anonymous, voluntary, questionnaire-based survey of midwives working exclusively in maternity units was conducted using the Maslach Burnout Inventory questionnaire, which measures burnout, and questions on respondents' demographic characteristics and working conditions. Multivariate ordinal logistic regression was used to explore associations between burnout and respondent characteristics, and associations were characterized by odds ratios. RESULTS: Among the dimensions of burnout, no change in depersonalization was observed in 2022, but both emotional exhaustion and personal ineffectiveness were significantly more common in 2022 than in 2014. Responses from 224 midwives in 2014 and 152 midwives in 2022 were analyzed. Looking at the influencing factors, higher levels of burnout in 2014 were significantly associated with poorer perceived health, lack of a partner, smoking, shorter time in healthcare, having a job in a larger city, feeling overworked and dissatisfied. In 2022, on the other hand, younger age, smoking, shorter time in healthcare, feeling overworked, dissatisfied and unvalued were associated with higher levels of burnout. Looking at the combined effect of these factors, willingness to attend a health promotion lecture and having a second job also showed a significant effect on burnout in 2022. DISCUSSION: The authors discuss the change in burnout among midwives and the possible reasons for the correlations shown. CONCLUSION: The results of the first study on burnout among midwives in Hungary show that improving the working conditions of midwives is essential for the functioning of family-friendly midwifery. In addition, to prevent burnout, more emphasis should be placed on the prevention of the risk factors identified in the study in education and training. Orv Hetil. 2023; 164(40): 1592-1599.
