RESUMO

The grey maize weevil, Tanymecus dilaticollis, is a polyphagous species, which is among the most important pests of maize in Southeastern Europe. The efficacy of commercial products with two species of entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs), Steinernema carpocapsae and Heterorhabditis bacteriophora, was investigated against adults of the grey maize weevil under laboratory conditions. Nemastar®, containing S. carpocapsae was more effective on T. dilaticollis adults than Nematop® containing H. bacteriophora, when applied uniformly to the surface of the soil, on Petri dishes containing T. dilaticollis adults. Results showed that S. carpocapsae rates of 83-333 infective juveniles/adult caused > 94% mortality in T. dilaticollis adults, whereas H. bacteriophora caused 27-61%, adult mortality, after exposure of insects to the commercial products of EPNs for 15 days. The infection rates of EPNs increased with concentration applied and ranged from 70-83% and 19-64% for Nemastar® and Nematop®, respectively. Subsequent field and semi-field tests were conducted with Nemastar® (application rate of 50 million S. carpocapsae per 100 m2) in maize crops with biological (mycoinsecticide Naturalis®, biofungicides and fertilizers) and chemical seed treatment (Gaucho® FS 600; active ingredient: imidacloprid) in Knezha, Bulgaria. Nematodes were found only in the dead specimens, in open plots and cages sprayed with the commercial nematode product. Nematode sprayings contributed for higher maize yields in the open maize plots in the fields with different seed treatments. We suggest that the use of powder formulation of S. carpocapsae in combination with biologically treated maize seeds can contribute to minimize the use of chemical insecticides against the grey maize weevil. The results obtained can be used as a base to further tests to ascertain the efficacy of EPNs products before they can be recommended for use in the integrated approach to T. dilaticollis management.

RESUMO

Curculionidae is a hyperdiverse group of beetles, whose taxonomy and phylogenetics are still poorly understood, especially at the genus level. The latest work on the evolution of Apionini showed a noticeable "mess" in the subtribe Oxystomatina, where most of the morphology-based genera were found to be polyphyletic or paraphyletic. These discrepancies between classical taxonomy and molecular phylogenetics implied the need for further taxonomic revision of these groups. Here, we used sets of morphological, molecular and ecological characters to verify the taxonomic statuses and disentangle the phylogenetic relations among the Bothryorrhynchapion apionids, which are classified as a subgenus of Cyanapion. Morphological data including morphometrics, and multilocus molecular analyses confirmed the monophyly of the Bothryorrhynchapion and species statuses of five species. The morphological analyses showed that Cyanapion (Bothryorrhynchapion) protractum (Sharp, 1891) from the southeast Palaearctic is a synonym of C. (B.) gyllenhalii (Kirby). Moreover, ecological features (host plant use and presence/absence of the endosymbiotic bacteria Wolbachia) helped to unravel the relations among the examined weevils. The speciation of Bothryorrhynchapion apionids was probably affected by allopatric distribution, shifts in the preferred host plants (Vicia sp. or Lathyrus sp.) of sympatric taxa, and infection by different strains of Wolbachia. The paper presents the first comprehensive description of the species' morphology, biology and ecology, and includes a key to the species.

RESUMO

Relationships between parasites and hosts can be drastic, depending on the balance between parasite strategies and the efficiency of the host immune response. In the case of entomopathogenic nematodes and their insect hosts, we must also consider the role of bacterial symbionts, as the interaction among them is tripartite and each component plays a critical role in death or survival. We analyzed the effects induced by the nematode-bacteria complex Steinernema carpocapsae, against red palm weevil (RPW) larvae, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus. We examined the antimicrobial response of the insect when in the presence of nematocomplexes or of its symbionts, Xenorhabdus nematophila. In detail, we investigated the potential interference of live and dead S. carpocapsae, their isolated cuticles, live or dead bacterial symbionts and their lipopolysaccharides, on the synthesis and activity of host antimicrobial peptides. Our data indicate that both live nematodes and live bacterial symbionts are able to depress the host antimicrobial response. When nematodes or symbionts were killed, they lacked inhibitory properties, as detected by the presence of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) in the host hemolymph and by assays of antimicrobial activity. Moreover, we isolated S. carpocapsae cuticles; when cuticles were injected into hosts they revealed evasive properties because they were not immunogenic and were not recognized by the host immune system. We observed that weevil AMPs did not damage X. nematophila, and the lipopolysaccharides purified from symbionts seemed to be non-immunogenic. We believe that our data provide more information on the biology of entomopathogenic nematodes, in particular concerning their role and the activity mediated by symbionts in the relationship with insect hosts.

This research studied the effect of temperature on the reproduction of Bracon vulgaris Ashmead, an ectoparasitoid of cotton boll weevil ( Anthonomus grandis Boheman) at constant temperatures of 20, 25 and 30ºC, 70 ± 10 percent RH and a photophase of 14 h. Females of the parasitoid produced a greater number of eggs when exposed to 25ºC (124.65 eggs) in relation to those exposed to 20 (43.40 eggs) and 30ºC (49.60 eggs). The number of parasitized larvae per female of B. vulgaris at 25ºC (71.75) was greater than at 20ºC (31.40) and 30ºC (25.15). The daily intrinsic rates of increase (r m) were - 0.007 at 20ºC, 0.07 at 25ºC and 0.03 at 30ºC, revealing that the temperature of 25ºC produced increases of 1,100 and 133 percent in the value r m in relation to temperatures of 20 and 30ºC, respectively. In programs of biological control of the boll weevil using innoculative releases, adult females of B. vulgaris with approximately five (at 25 or 30ºC) or 20 day old (at 20ºC) should be used; when using innundative releases, adult females of B. vulgaris , with ages between 11 and 31; 9 and 29 or 3 and 14 days, respectively, at 20, 25 or 30ºC should be used.

RESUMO

Phymastichus coffea LaSalle is an African endoparasitoid of adults of the coffee berry borer, Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari) that was introduced into Mexico for biological control purposes. The objective of this study was to investigate the oviposition behavior of P. coffea on its host under laboratory conditions. The results indicate that P. coffea females exhibited 12 behavioral acts during and after oviposition, such as, walking, cleaning, flying, surface landing, resting, host landing, host antennation, touching the host with forelegs, host recognition, walking on the host, oviposition and cleaning after oviposition. The sequence of each behavior is described in an ethogram.

RESUMO

Haeckeliania sperata Pinto is an egg-endoparasitoid of Diaprepes abbreviatus L. (Coleoptera: Curculionidae). We evaluated the relative susceptibility of H. sperata adults to commercially relevant pesticides used in citrus and ornamental production systems. Parasitoids were exposed to pesticide residues on leaf surfaces. Four concentrations of seven pesticides were tested; concentrations for each pesticide consisted of a dilution series using the label rate for field applications as the starting concentration. Lethal concentrations (LC50s and LC90s) were calculated 12 and 24 h after exposure to the pesticides. Lethal times (LT50s and LT90S) were estimated for each pesticide concentration. All tested pesticides had a negative effect on Haeckeliania's survivorship. However, some pesticides were significantly less harmful to this parasitoid. LC50s and LC90s of organophospate, carbamate, and pyrethroid pesticides were less than one eighth of the label rates. LT50s and LT90s of these insecticides were < 12 h even at the most diluted concentrations. Thus, applications of these pesticides might have a strong negative impact on the natural control of D. abbreviatus by H. sperata. Commercial formulations of imidacloprid, abamectin, petroleum oil, and a phosphonate fungicide allowed H. sperata to live longer compared with the previous pesticides, suggesting a certain degree of selectivity. Moreover, adults exposed to diluted concentrations of imidacloprid, abamectin, petroleum oil, and a phosphonate fungicide had a greater survival than those exposed to label concentrations. These findings suggest that the use of products that have less toxic effects on the introduced parasitoid will increase its chances to parasitize D. abbreviatus eggs.

RESUMO

We investigated the ability of two populations of Anisopteromalus calandrae (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae), to parasitize and develop on late instars of five different stored-product insects that typically complete their development inside seeds of grain or legume species or other dry commodity. The host species were the cigarette beetle, Lasioderma serricorne (F.); cowpea weevil, Callosobruchus maculatus (F.); rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae (L.); lesser grain borer, Rhyzopertha dominica (F.); and Angoumois grain moth, Sitotroga cerealella (Olivier). Experiments were conducted in the laboratory in a no-choice design by using petri dishes (15 by 100 mm) as experimental arenas with 20 host larvae. A. calandrae females from populations originating in Georgia (GA) and Oklahoma (OK) were introduced singly into experimental arenas and allowed to sting and oviposit for 24 h. Parasitism by the OK population was greater than that for the GA population across all hosts. However, no or very low parasitism was found on Angoumois grain moth for either population in this experiment. The highest number of parasitoid progeny was recorded on cowpea weevil (15.9) followed by rice weevil (11.5) and cigarette beetle (10.8) for the OK population. A similar trend was observed in the GA population. The highest proportion of female progeny was produced on cowpea weevil (73.0%) by the OK population. Conversely, a higher proportion of female progeny was produced on rice weevil (64.6%) by the GA population than produced by the OK population. Parasitoid adults were significantly larger and heavier when they developed on cowpea weevil irrespective of parasitoid population. The possible application of these results for biological control of stored-product insects is discussed.

We investigate structural and behavioral differences between male and female adults of guava weevil, Conotrachelus psidii Marshall, 1922 to help in sex determination. Weevils collected from a commercial guava orchard were individually caged and maintained under laboratory conditions. Every day ten individuals were grouped and their behavior was observed. During mating the males and females were identified. Fifty weevils of each sex were killed and they were observed with stereoscopic microscope. The antenna insertion on the rostrum and hair on the thorax and abdomen surfaces were examined. Length and width of body, pronotum, last abdominal sternite and rostrum were also taken. Behaviorally, the male weevils produce audible sound by stridulation of abdomen while females do not. In the females, the body and pronotum width and body a rostrum length were higher than in the males, but the last abdominal sternite was smaller. Three other structural differences were visible with the naked eye: 1) the anterior region of pronotum have scarce hair or have not in the females and hair is dense in the males; 2) the last tergite of females is hidden by the penultimate tergite whereas in the males is visible; 3) the first abdominal sternite of females is more prominent, very convex and without or with little bristle. In the males it is slightly concave and with abundant hair. The male-female differences found in this work allow, without hurt or change insect behavior, an efficient sex determination of guava weevil.

Pyemotidae mites have been reported as ectoparasites of a large number of arthropods, especially of insects. These mites are frequently found attacking insects in different habitats, including insect rearing. This paper reports the occurrence of Pyemotes sp., ventricosus group, in colonies of Tuta absoluta (Meyerick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), Anagasta kuehniella (Zeller) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) and Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), in the insect rearing laboratory of ESALQ-USP, in Piracicaba, State of São Paulo, provoking dematitis in those involved with the rearing. This is the first report of a Pyemotes species parasitizing T. absoluta and S. zeamais. Considering the capacity of Pyemotes to cause dermatitis in human beings, demonstrated by other authors, the direct use of the Pyemotes species found in this work for the control of the reported insect species may not be promising.

Vineyards are attacked by a series of pests that damage yield. In addition to the insects traditionally associated with the crop, the presence of Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky, registered as a grain store pest, was observed damaging grapes near maturity. Direct damage is caused by perforation of the grapes and indirect damage from the proliferation of bacteria that multiply in the spilt juice, that lead to increased rot at harvest. In Vitis vinifera grape vines of the Cabernet Sauvignon cultivar, up to 80 percent of the grapes were damaged by insect attack in February 2003.
