The increasing amount of plastic litter worldwide is a serious problem for the environment and its biodiversity, ecosystems, animal and human welfare and the economy. The degradation of these plastics leads to microplastics (MPs), which have been reported for the first time in groundwater in the Canary archipelago. This research investigates the presence of MPs at nine different points on La Palma and El Hierro, where samples were collected in galleries, wells and springs during the month of December 2022. Six different polymers were found with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) - polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), cellulose (CEL), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polystyrene (PS) and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). The particle concentrations found ranged from 1 to 23 n/L, with a maximum particle size of 1900 µm, the smallest being 35 µm. PP and PE were the most common polymers found in the analysis, associated with the use of packaging, disposable products, textiles and water pipes, related to poorly maintained sewerage networks where leaks occur, allowing these MPs to escape into the environment and end up in groundwater. The detection of microplastic pollution in groundwater emphasises environmental hazards, including biodiversity disruption and water source contamination. Additionally, it presents potential risks to human health by transferring contaminants into the food chain and through respiratory exposure.

Emerging pollutants (EPs) include a wide array of chemical compounds, as well as some microorganisms, which presence was unknown or unmeasurable until recently, or have recently started to be considered a threat towards the environment or animal and human health. No clear or homogeneous regulations exist for their measurement or control, and efforts should be made to assess their presence and offer solutions for their safe management, as well as to achieve an optimal protection of water resources. A previous study performed by our research group thoroughly studied a wide profile of EPs in El Hierro Island (Canary Islands) for the first time. Now, we present the study of the same panel of 70 EPs in La Palma Island (Canary Islands). 14 samples were collected in 2021, at different locations in La Palma island, representing seven municipalities (Los Llanos de Aridane, Santa Cruz de la Palma, El Paso, Breña Baja, Tazacorte, Barlovento and Fuencaliente) and four installation types (Piezometers/Wells, Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), Water Gallery and Water Springs). High performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) was performed to analyse the EP array, which included five chemical families: UV filters, UV blockers/stabilizers, parabens, Pharmaceutical Active Compounds (PhACs) and pesticides. Subsequently, a comprehensive descriptive and statistical analysis, including different tests was performed on the data obtained. Heterogeneous concentration levels of the EPs studied were found based on municipality and installation type among the island, with some of the PhACs and UV blockers/stabilizers showing very high levels, especially at Breña Baja and wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). It is worth noting that some of the samples comprised within the WWTPs category were collected outside the treatment plant, after water has been treated, so they should not bear dangerous concentrations of any hazardous compound. The high presence of two pesticides, imidacloprid (ranging from 68.7 to 24,896.5 ng⋅L-1) and acetamiprid (ranging from 1010.7 to 5168.1 ng⋅L-1) was worth highlighting too. In addition, three EP concentration clusters were found to virtually divide the island based on mathematical percentiles of EP mean concentrations, which can help gain more insight into the contamination status of the island and measures that could be taken for their management. Finally, a comparison between La Palma results and the profile observed at El Hierro by our research group was presented. Altogether, the study performed calls for a need to take actions towards avoiding entrance of EPs in the water cycle, and not just focusing on remediation strategies once they have reached the groundwater, freshwater or soil.

Malaysia is bounded by the South China Sea with many islands that support species megadiversity and coral reef ecosystems. This study investigates the distribution of microplastics (MPs) in the surface water around the four marine park islands (Perhentian, Redang, Kapas, and Tenggol) during COVID-19. The global pandemic has reset human activities, impacting the environment while possibly reducing anthropogenic contributions of microplastic pollution near the South China Sea islands. It was found that Pulau Perhentian recorded the most abundance of MPs (588.33 ± 111.77 items/L), followed by Pulau Redang (314.67 ± 58.08 items/L), Pulau Kapas (359.8 ± 87.70 items/L) and Pulau Tenggol (294.33 ± 101.64 items/L). Kruskal-Wallis analysis indicates a significant difference in total MPs abundance between islands. There are moderate correlations between salinity, pH, temperature and MPs variability. Among these parameters, only temperature is significant (p < 0.05) as proven by the principal component analysis and multiple linear regression analysis. Nearly 99 % of MPs are fiber type, with the majority of them being black and transparent. Micro-FTIR spectroscopy revealed polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl methyl ether, polyamide, phenoxy-resins and polyurethane-acrylic are associated with MPs. The findings provide a new baseline reference for the MPs distribution on Malaysian islands, which contributes to a potential future direction regarding marine sustainability.

Cooperativity is a central feature of protein folding, but the thermodynamic and structural origins of cooperativity remain poorly understood. To quantify cooperativity, we measured guanidine-induced unfolding transitions of single helix-hairpin-helix (HhH)2 repeats and tandem pairs from a seven-repeat segment of Methanopyrus kandleri Topoisomerase V (Topo V) to determine intrinsic repeat stability and interfacial free energies between repeats. Most single-repeat constructs are folded and stable; moreover, several pairs have unfolding midpoints that exceed midpoints of the single repeats they comprise, demonstrating favorable coupling between repeats. Analyzing unfolding transitions with a modified Ising model, we find a broad range of intrinsic and interfacial free energies. Surprisingly, the G repeat, which lacks density in the crystal structure of Topo V without DNA, is the most stable repeat in the array. Using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, we demonstrate that the isolated G repeat adopts a canonical (HhH)2 fold and forms an ordered interface with the F-repeat but not with the H repeat. Using parameters from our paired Ising fit, we built a partition function for the seven-repeat array. The multistate unfolding transition predicted from this partition function is in excellent agreement with the experimental unfolding transition, providing strong justification for the nearest-neighbor model. The seven-repeat partition function predicts a native state in which three independent segments ("stability islands") of interacting repeats are separated by two unstable interfaces. We confirm this segmented architecture by measuring the unfolding transition of an equimolar mixture of these three separate polypeptides. This segmented structural organization may facilitate wrapping around DNA.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The genus Buxus has high levels of endemism in the Caribbean flora, with ~50 taxa. In Cuba, 82 % grow on ultramafic substrates and 59 % are nickel (Ni) accumulators or Ni hyperaccumulators. Hence it is an ideal model group to study if this diversification could be related to adaptation to ultramafic substrates and to Ni hyperaccumulation. METHODS: We generated a well-resolved molecular phylogeny, including nearly all of the Neotropical and Caribbean Buxus taxa. To obtain robust divergence times we tested for the effects of different calibration scenarios, and we reconstructed ancestral areas and ancestral character states. Phylogenetic trees were examined for trait-independent shifts in diversification rates and we used multi-state models to test for state-dependent speciation and extinction rates. Storms could have contributed to Cuba acting as a species pump and to Buxus reaching other Caribbean islands and northern South America'. KEY RESULTS: We found a Caribbean Buxus clade with Mexican ancestors, encompassing three major subclades, which started to radiate during the middle Miocene (13.25 Mya). Other Caribbean islands and northern South America were reached from ~3 Mya onwards. CONCLUSIONS: An evolutionary scenario is evident in which Buxus plants able to grow on ultramafic substrates by exaptation became ultramafic substrate endemics and evolved stepwise from Ni tolerance through Ni accumulation to Ni hyperaccumulation, which has triggered species diversification of Buxus in Cuba. Storms could have contributed to Cuba acting as a species pump and to Buxus reaching other Caribbean islands and northern South America'.

Three species of nannosquillid mantis shrimps, including two new species, Acanthosquilla ryukyuensis n. sp. and Acanthosquilla shoheii n. sp., are described based on specimens collected from the Ryukyu Islands, Japan. The two new species resemble A. derijardi Manning, 1970, but can be distinguished from A. derijardi by the following features: 1) rostral plate anterolateral corner forms almost a right angle; 2) the distal tip of the antennular somite dorsal process reaches or slightly falls short of proximal half of rostral plate; and 3) eighth thoracic somite (= TS8) posterior margin is black medially. Furthermore, A. ryukyuensis n. sp. and A. shoheii n. sp. are easy to identify by the bifurcated lateral tooth of the telson, and by the posterodorsal pattern of the telson, respectively. In this study, molecular analyses based on partial sequences of mitochondrial 12S and 16S ribosomal DNA, cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI), and the partial nuclear gene of 28S ribosomal DNA recovers these three species of Acanthosquilla and A. multifasciata (Wood-Mason, 1895) (the type species of the genus) in a single clade. The resulting trees also suggest the polyphyly of Nannosquillidae but with low nodal support. Detailed examinations of the morphological and color features and DNA barcoding results allowed us to delineate intraspecific variations and interspecific differences. The number and shape of setae under the dorsal spine of raptorial claw carpus was found to be useful in distinguishing A. shoheii n. sp. from A. derijardi and A. ryukyuensis n. sp., while combinations of the coloration of the rostral plate, posterior margin of TS8 and posterodorsal surface of telson are useful to distinguish the three species.

A Gram-positive, non-motile, pale yellow coloured actinobacterial strain designated MMS17-SY077T was isolated from island soil, and its taxonomic position was investigated using a polyphasic approach. Strain MMS17-SY077T grew optimally at 30 °C, at pH 7 and in the absence of NaCl on Reasoner's 2A agar. Based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, the strain was assigned to the genus Agromyces of the family Microbacteriaceae, and the most related species were Agromyces italicus DSM 16388T (98.8 % sequence similarity), Agromyces allii UMS-62T (98.1 %) and Agromyces terreus DS-10T (97.8 %). Strain MMS17-SY077T formed a distinct cluster within the Agromyces clade in the phylogenetic tree. Genome-based comparative analyses confirmed a clear distinction between the strain and neighbouring species, as the highest orthologous average nucleotide identity and digital DNA-DNA hybridization values with other related species were 77.2 and 21.4% respectively, which were far below the cutoffs for species distinction. The diagnostic polar lipids of MMS17-SY077T were diphosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylglycerol, and unidentified glycolipids and an unidentified aminolipid were also present. The main isoprenoid quinones were menaquinones with 11 and 12 isoprene units (MK-11 and MK-12), and main fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0 (34.4 %) and iso-C16 : 0 (33.2 %). The whole-cell hydrolysates contained rhamnose, ribose and galactose as diagnostic sugars, and l-2,4-diaminobutyric acid as the major diamino acid. The DNA G+C content was 72.1 mol %. Based on phenotypic, chemotaxnomic and phylogenetic characterization, strain MMS17-SY077T should be classified as representing a new species of the genus Agromyces, for which the name Agromyces seonyunensis sp. nov. is proposed (type strain MMS17-SY077T=KCTC 49423T=LMG 31762T).

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The most species-rich and ecologically diverse plant radiation on the Canary Islands is the Aeonium alliance (Crassulaceae). In island radiations like this, speciation can take place either within islands or following dispersal between islands. Aiming at quantifying intra- and inter-island speciation events in the evolution of Aeonium, and exploring their consequences, we hypothesized that (1) intra-island diversification resulted in stronger ecological divergence of sister lineages, and that (2) taxa on islands with a longer history of habitation by Aeonium show stronger ecological differentiation and produce fewer natural hybrids. METHODS: We studied the biogeographical and ecological setting of diversification processes in Aeonium with a fully sampled and dated phylogeny inferred using a ddRADseq approach. Ancestral areas and biogeographical events were reconstructed in BioGeoBEARS. Eleven morphological characters and three habitat characteristics were taken into account to quantify the morphological and ecological divergence between sister lineages. A co-occurrence matrix of all Aeonium taxa is presented to assess the spatial separation of taxa on each island. KEY RESULTS: We found intra- and inter-island diversification events in almost equal numbers. In lineages that diversified within single islands, morphological and ecological divergence was more pronounced than in lineages derived from inter-island diversification, but only the difference in morphological divergence was significant. Those islands with the longest history of habitation by Aeonium had the lowest percentages of co-occurring and hybridizing taxon pairs compared with islands where Aeonium arrived later. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings illustrate the importance of both inter- and intra-island speciation, the latter of which is potentially sympatric speciation. Speciation on the same island entailed significantly higher levels of morphological divergence compared with inter-island speciation, but ecological divergence was not significantly different. Longer periods of shared island habitation resulted in the evolution of a higher degree of spatial separation and stronger reproductive barriers.

Teressa goat is a unique goat breed in Andaman and Nicobar Islands (ANI) of India. Effects of Flaxseed oil (FSO) supplementation in body weight (BW), scrotal circumference (SC), testicular volume (TV) and testicular weight (TW), endocrinological profiles, sex behavioural profiles (SBPs), oxidative stress markers and semen production and its quality profiles in rainy and dry summer season were studied in Teressa goat. Male goats (n = 12) of 3-4 years old were equally divided into control and treated groups. Treated animals received 25 mL FSO per day. Oral drenching of FSO was done in the morning before feeding the concentrate ration. Body weight, scrotal circumference, TV and TW were measured in bucks of FSO treated and untreated during rainy and dry summer seasons. Blood follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), testosterone, thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4), cortisol and prolactin, total antioxidant capacity (TAC), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione (GSH) and malondialdehyde (MDA) were measured in bucks of FSO treated and untreated during rainy and dry summer seasons. Libido score (LS), mating ability score (MAS) and sex behavioural score (SBS) were estimated at time of semen collection in bucks of FSO treated and untreated during rainy and dry summer seasons. Semen samples (n = 100; 50 semen samples from each season; each 25 semen samples from control and treatment groups per season) were collected and analysed for semen quality profiles. One-way ANOVA (control rainy, control dry, treated rainy and treated dry) revealed that BW, SC, TV and TW, FSH, LH, testosterone, TSH, T3 and T4 were higher (P < 0.05) and cortisol and prolactin were lower (P < 0.05) in FSO treated bucks of rainy season followed by untreated bucks of rainy season, FSO treated bucks of dry summer season and were lower (P < 0.05) in untreated bucks of dry summer season. Similarly, TAC, CAT, SOD and GSH, LS, MAS and SBS, and volume, pH, sperm concentration, mass activity, total motility (TM), viability, acrosomal integrity (AcI), plasma membrane integrity (PMI) and nuclear integrity (NI) were higher (P < 0.05) and MDA and TSA were lower (P < 0.05) in FSO treated bucks of rainy season followed by FSO treated bucks of dry summer season, untreated bucks of rainy season and were lower (P < 0.05) in untreated bucks of dry summer season. The results of the present study indicated that the breeding bucks suffered physiological stress (higher cortisol), oxidative stress (higher MDA and deficiency of antioxidants), hormonal imbalance (higher prolactin and cortisol and deficiency of gonadotropins, gonadal hormone and thyroid hormones) and infertility due to poor libido and poor semen production and its quality profiles during dry summer season. Thus, dry summer was more stressful season compared to rainy season for the goat bucks. FSO supplementation mitigated these stresses and improved the scrotal and testicular biometrics, libido, antioxidants, hormones and semen quality profiles in Teressa goat bucks. The current study concluded that FSO effectively improved the hormones, libido, antioxidant profiles, and scrotal and testicular biometrics with cascading beneficial effects on semen quality profiles in Teressa goat bucks under humid tropical island ecosystem of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Objetivo: o objetivo foi realizar uma revisão sistemática da literatura sobre a capacidade funcional e os fatores associados de idosos residentes em ilhas. Estratégia de pesquisa: a busca ocorreu pela combinação dos descritores "comunicação", "senso de humor e humor como assunto", "atividades cotidianas", "limitação da mobilidade", "autonomia pessoal", "cognição", "ilhas", "idoso" e "idoso de 80 anos ou mais" e dos correspondentes na língua inglesa, nas bases de dados: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science e Lilacs. Resultados: dos 4761 artigos encontrados, 20 foram selecionados. Fatores individuais, clínicos e os relacionados ao estilo de vida foram identificados. Conclusão: a capacidade funcional de idosos é um fenômeno multifatorial. Poucos artigos são realizados em ilhas e a abordagem do contexto espacial, ambiental dos indivíduos idosos é escassa. Mais estudos com foco nos aspectos ambientais devem ser realizados em ilhas, principalmente nas pequenas em extensão, remotas e com pequenas populações.(AU)


Objective: The objective was to conduct a systematic review of the literature on the functional capacity and associated factors of elderly people living on islands. Research strategy: The search took place by combining the descriptors "communication", "sense of humor and humor as a subject", "daily activities", "limited mobility", "personal autonomy", "cognition", "islands", "elderly" and "elderly aged 80 years or more" and correspondents in the English language, in the databases: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and Lilacs. Results: Of the 4761 articles found, 20 were selected. Individual, clinical and lifestyle factors were identified. Conclusion: The functional capacity of the elderly is a multifactorial phenomenon. Few articles are conducted on islands, and the spatial and environmental context of elderly individuals is scarce. More studies focusing on environmental aspects should be carried out on islands, mainly in small ones, remote and with small populations.(AU)

The World Health Organization's revised NTD Roadmap and the newly launched Guidelines target elimination of schistosomiasis as a public health problem in all endemic areas by 2030. Key to meeting this goal is elucidating how selective pressures imposed by interventions shape parasite populations. Our aim was to identify any differential impact of a unique cluster-randomized tri-armed elimination intervention (biannual mass drug administration (MDA) applied alone or in association with either mollusciciding (snail control) or behavioural change interventions) across two Zanzibarian islands (Pemba and Unguja) on the population genetic composition of Schistosoma haematobium over space and time. Fifteen microsatellite loci were used to analyse individual miracidia collected from infected individuals across islands and intervention arms at the start (2012 baseline: 1,522 miracidia from 176 children; 303 from 43 adults; age-range 6-75, mean 12.7 years) and at year 5 (2016: 1,486 miracidia from 146 children; 214 from 25 adults; age-range 9-46, mean 12.4 years). Measures of genetic diversity included allelic richness (Ar), Expected (He) and Observed heterozygosity (Ho), inbreeding coefficient (FST), parentage analysis, estimated worm burden, worm fecundity, and genetic sub-structuring. There was little evidence of differential selective pressures on population genetic diversity, inbreeding or estimated worm burdens by treatment arm, with only the MDA+snail control arm within Unguja showing trends towards reduced diversity and altered inbreeding over time. The greatest differences overall, both in terms of parasite fecundity and genetic sub-structuring, were observed between the islands, consistent with Pemba's persistently higher mean infection intensities compared to neighbouring Unguja, and within islands in terms of infection hotspots (across three definitions). These findings highlight the important contribution of population genetic analyses to elucidate extensive genetic diversity and biological drivers, including potential gene-environmental factors, that may override short term selective pressures imposed by differential disease control strategies. Glioneuronal tumor with neuropil-like islands (GNTNI) is a very rare subtype of glioneuronal tumor. We present a case of a 62-year-old man with GNTNI. Two adjacent lesions in the left parietal lobe were removed by left parietal craniotomy. The histological findings were glial cell proliferation and scattered rosettes consisting of synaptophysin-positive and NeuN-positive cells, leading to the diagnosis of GNTNI. Target sequencing revealed a genetic alteration similar to glioblastoma, IDH-wild type, which suggested adjuvant therapies. There are few previous reports on the treatment of this disease, and the patient should be followed carefully.

RESUMO

Acute respiratory tract infections (ARIs) are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in under-five children worldwide. Assam has around 2500 river islands (locally called Chars/Chaporis) in the Brahmaputra River with socioeconomically deprived inhabitants lacking access to basic health-care facilities. A community-based cross-sectional study was carried out among 380 under-five children living in the Char areas of Tinsukia District to estimate the prevalence of ARI and determine the associated risk factors. The prevalence of ARI among under-five children was found to be 56.32%. Prevalence was significantly higher among children living in Dibru-Saikhowa island, with families having >2 children, belonging to socioeconomic class 5 (modified BG Prasad scale), having a positive history of smoking or ARI in family members, having homes with attached kitchens or using wood for cooking, inadequate ventilation or overcrowding and residences of katcha ghars.

RESUMO

The complex island archipelagoes of Wallacea and Melanesia have provided empirical data behind integral theories in evolutionary biology, including allopatric speciation and island biogeography. Yet, questions regarding the relative impact of the layered biogeographic barriers, such as deep-water trenches and isolated island systems, on faunal diversification remain underexplored. One such barrier is Wallace's Line, a significant biogeographic boundary that largely separates Australian and Asian biodiversity. To assess the relative roles of biogeographic barriers-specifically isolated island systems and Wallace's Line-we investigated the tempo and mode of diversification in a diverse avian radiation, Corvides (Crows and Jays, Birds-of-paradise, Vangas, and allies). We combined a genus-level data set of thousands of ultraconserved elements (UCEs) and a species-level, 12-gene Sanger sequence matrix to produce a well-resolved supermatrix tree that we leveraged to explore the group's historical biogeography and the effects of the biogeographic barriers on their macroevolutionary dynamics. The tree is well resolved and differs substantially from what has been used extensively for past comparative analyses within this group. We confirmed that Corvides, and its major constituent clades, arose in Australia and that a burst of dispersals west across Wallace's Line occurred after the uplift of Wallacea during the mid-Miocene. We found that dispersal across this biogeographic barrier was generally rare, though westward dispersals were two times more frequent than eastward dispersals. Wallacea's central position between Sundaland and Sahul no doubt acted as a bridge for island-hopping dispersal out of Australia, across Wallace's Line, to colonize the rest of Earth. In addition, we found that the complex island archipelagoes east of Wallace's Line harbor the highest rates of net diversification and are a substantial source of colonists to continental systems on both sides of this biogeographic barrier. Our results support emerging evidence that island systems, particularly the geologically complex archipelagoes of the Indo-pacific, are drivers of species diversification. In 2014-2015 and 2019-2021, teleost fishes off Galindez Island (Antarctic Peninsula) were examined for trematodes. Combined morphological and molecular analyses revealed the presence of eight trematode species of four families (Hemiuridae, Lecithasteridae, Opecoelidae, Lepidapedidae) from five fish species. Only adult trematodes were found and all of them are Antarctic endemics with their congeners occurring on other continents. The hemiuroids, Elytrophalloides oatesi (Leiper & Atkinson, 1914), Genolinea bowersi (Leiper & Atkinson, 1914), and Lecithaster macrocotyle Szidat & Graefe, 1967 belong to the most common Antarctic species and together with Lepidapedon garrardi (Leiper & Atkinson, 1914) and Neolebouria georgiensis Gibson, 1976 they were recorded as the least host-specific parasites. The originally sub-Antarctic Neolepidapedon macquariensis Zdzitowiecki, 1993 is a new record for the Antarctic Peninsula and Parachaenichthys charcoti (Vaillant), is a new host record. Neolebouria terranovaensis Zdzitowiecki, Pisano & Vacchi, 1993 is considered a synonym of N. georgiensis because of identical morphology and dimensions. The currently known phylogenetic relationships within the studied families are supported, including the polyphyly of Macvicaria Gibson & Bray, 1982 with the future need to accommodate its Antarctic species in a new genus. The validity of M. georgiana (Kovaleva & Gaevskaja, 1974) and M. magellanica Laskowski, Jezewski & Zdzitowiecki, 2013 needs to be confirmed by further analyses. Genetic sequence data are still scarce from Antarctica, and more studies applying integrative taxonomic approaches and large-scale parasitological examinations of benthic invertebrates are needed to match sequences of larval stages to those of well-characterised adults and to elucidate trematode life-cycles.

Objective: To estimate the incidence of metabolic syndrome and explore possible risk factors for metabolic syndrome in adults of rural communities in Yuhuan county, Zhejiang province, China. Methods: During June-December, 2018, a follow-up survey was conducted in participants without metabolic syndrome at baseline survey in 2012 to obtain the information collected in questionnaire survey, anthropometric data and laboratory data. The incidence of metabolic syndrome in the participants was estimated, and Logistic regression model was used to explore the risk factors, adjusted risk ratio (aRR) and 95%CI. Results: Among 3 162 participants, 522 new metabolic syndrome cases were identified. The 6-year cumulative incidence rate of metabolic syndrome was 16.5%, and the cumulative incidence rate was higher in women (20.6%) than that in men (12.3%, P<0.001). Those incidence rates were higher in those in jobless, smoking or drinking groups. Being women (aRR=1.96, 95%CI: 1.50-2.58) and family history of hypertension (aRR=1.31, 95%CI: 1.04-1.63) were independent risk factors for metabolic syndrome. Conclusion: The follow up indicated that the incidence of metabolic syndrome was relatively high in rural adults on islands in Zhejiang, and women or those with family history of hypertension were more likely to have metabolic syndrome.

This study was conducted to evaluate the impact of human activities on the ecological health and food chain at the shores of four Nile Islands in Great Cairo including El-Qeratten, El-Waraq, El-Zamalek, and El-Manial. Water quality, bacteria, phytoplankton, benthic algae, zooplankton, macrobenthic invertebrates, and bony fishes were examined at each island shore over two seasons including the lowest and the highest flow (February and July 2020, respectively). The obtained results showed that the average values of most of the chemicals in Nile Island's water were within the Egyptian water quality limits. Discriminant analysis of physicochemical factors revealed a similarity between El-Waraq and El-Qerateen and between El-Manial and El-Zamalek. El-Qeratten was the most polluted island. It has the highest total and fecal coliform bacteria count (3.155 and 3.050 Log MPN/100 mL, respectively). El-Zamalek shores have the highest phytoplankton (33,582 cells × 104 L-1) and zooplankton count (310,891 organisms × m-3) and phyto-biochemical values. Biochemical analysis of phytoplankton demonstrated the richness of the bulk by protein (> 85% of biomass), indicating that phytoplankton has a high nutritional value. Elevated zooplankton count was recorded at El-Zamalek, which coincided with the peak of phytoplankton abundance. Mollusca were the dominant macrobenthic invertebrates on most of the island's shores. Bony fishes were represented by 27 species and two crustaceans. The levels of the metals in fish samples were compared with the food safety guideline endorsed by the World Health Organization and Food and Agriculture Organization (WHO/FAO) to evaluate the toxicity level.

Islands frequently harbour unique assemblages of species, yet their ecological roles and differences are largely ignored in island biogeography studies. Here, we examine eco-evolutionary processes structuring mammal assemblages on oceanic islands worldwide, including all extant and extinct late-Quaternary mammal species. We find island mammal assemblages tend to be phylogenetically clustered (share more recent evolutionary histories), with clustering increasing with island area and isolation. We also observe that mammal assemblages often tend to be functionally clustered (share similar traits), but the strength of clustering is weak and generally independent from island area or isolation. These findings indicate the important roles of in situ speciation and dispersal filtering in shaping island mammal assemblages under pre-anthropogenic conditions, notably through adaptive radiation of a few clades (e.g. bats, with generally high dispersal abilities). Our study demonstrates that considering the functional and phylogenetic axes of diversity can better reveal the eco-evolutionary processes of island community assembly.

Dark green islands (DGIs) are the outcome of post-transcriptional gene silencing (PTGS) in antiviral immunity, but their characteristics related to PTGS remain largely unknown. In this study, the cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) was inoculated on Nicotiana tabacum plants to explore the PTGS features of DGIs. Our results showed that higher expressions of PTGS-associated genes, especially NtAGO1, present in DGIs. To investigate the role of NtAGO1 in the generation and the antiviral effect of DGIs, NtAGO1 was then over-expressed or knocked out in N. tabacum plants through agrobacterium-mediated genetic transformation. The results showed that more DGIs with larger areas appeared on NtAGO1 over-expressed plants, accompanied by less virus accumulation, less reactive oxygen species production, and seldom membrane damage, whereas fewer DGIs appeared on NtAGO1 knockout plants with more damage on infected plants. In addition, the NtAGO1-participated antiviral process could promote the transduction of the salicylic acid-mediated defense pathway. Taken together, our results indicate that DGIs are maintained by a stronger PTGS mechanism, and NtAGO1 positively regulates the generation and viral resistance of DGIs in N. tabacum.
