BACKGROUND: Despite the recognized importance, the determination of halogens in Antarctic seaweeds remains understudied. Limited research exists due to challenges associated with sample preparation, and reliable analytical techniques for this type of analysis. Therefore, further investigations are necessary to bridge this knowledge gap and gain a comprehensive understanding of halogen metabolism in Antarctic seaweeds. METHODS: In this study, seaweeds from the coast of the Antarctic continent were characterized concerning the total content of halogens and their species. For this purpose, different sample preparation methods, based on extraction and combustion, combining highly selective and sensitive chromatographic and spectrometric multi-technique approaches were used. RESULTS: By using optimized methods, it was possible to determine total halogens content, the distribution of bromine and iodine in different classes of species (lipids, water-soluble, proteins, carbohydrates, and residue), as well as the identification of iodinated amino acids (MIT and DIT) in ten brown and red seaweeds. Bromate and iodate were not detected in the samples, which presented only bromide and iodide species in their composition. Additionally, unknown bromine and iodine species were observed in different extracts evaluated. Furthermore, 25 halogenated polyphenols were identified in seaweeds, of which only four were already reported in the literature. CONCLUSION: The results obtained in this study comprise unprecedented data in the literature on species of halogens present in seaweeds from the Antarctic environment.

Iodine is a trace element required to produce the thyroid hormones, which are critical for development, growth and metabolism. To ensure appropriate population iodine nutrition, convenient and accurate methods of monitoring are necessary. Current methods for determining iodine status either involve a significant participant burden or are subject to considerable intra-individual variation. The continuous secretion of iodide in saliva potentially permits its use as a convenient, non-invasive assessment of status in populations. To assess its likely effectiveness, we reviewed studies analysing the association between salivary iodide concentration (SIC) and dietary iodine intake, urinary iodide concentration (UIC) and/or 24-h urinary iodide excretion (UIE). Eight studies conducted in different countries met the inclusion criteria, including data for 921 subjects: 702 healthy participants and 219 with health conditions. SIC correlated positively with UIC and/or UIE in four studies, with the strength of relationship ranging from r = 0·19 to r = 0·90 depending on sampling protocol, age, and if salivary values were corrected for protein concentration. Additionally, SIC positively correlated with dietary intake, being strongest when saliva was collected after dinner. SIC varied with external factors, including thyroid function, use of some medications, smoking and overall health status. Evidence provided here supports the use of SIC as a viable, low-burden method for determining iodine status in populations. However, small sample sizes and high variability indicates the need for more extensive analyses across age groups, ethnicities, disease states and dietary groups to clarify the relative accuracy and reliability in each case and standardise procedure.

In recent years, the incidence of thyroid cancer has been on a significant rise worldwide, and a number of environmental factors have been suspected to be risk factors for thyroid cancer, especially the relationship between iodine intake and thyroid cancer has attracted attention. In this study, we want to assess the relationship between different water iodine exposures and thyroid cancer incidence before and after water alteration in areas with high water iodine in China. Thyroid cancer patients (2009-2020) were enrolled at two hospitals, both in Heze City, Shandong Province, an area with high water iodine levels. According to the criteria of the study, 5826 cases out of 8785 cases were selected for inclusion in the study. Before and after water alteration, the incidence of thyroid cancer was highest in areas with water iodine concentrations of 200-300 µg/L in high iodine areas. In areas where water iodine decreased to adequate iodine levels, there was a strong negative correlation between the decreased level of water iodine and the incidence of thyroid cancer. In addition, in cases with pathology reports, we found that the greater the decrease in water iodine values, the markedly smaller the maximum diameter of the thyroid cancer lesions. Taken together, these findings suggest that we should continue to monitor the incidence of thyroid cancer in areas with high water iodine and continue to optimize population iodine intake to reduce the incidence of thyroid cancer.

OBJECTIVE: Thyroid cancer (TC) is an extremely prevailing malignant endocrine tumor. Therefore, effective diagnostic tools are necessary. This study explored the application value of dual-source computed tomography (DSCT) in TC diagnosis and biological behavior assessment. METHODS: This study retrospectively selected 68 TC patients and another 74 benign patients with thyroid adenoma, nodular goiter, or adenomatous hyperplasia. All patients were confirmed by pathological examination and underwent DSCT examination. The iodine concentration (IC) obtained from plain computed tomography (CT) scanning and normalized iodine concentration (NIC) in the arterial phase and venous phase were recorded. The positive expression rates of estrogen receptor alpha (ERα), estrogen receptors beta (ERß), and Ki67 in pathological tissues were determined by immunohistochemistry, and their correlation with IC in plain CT was assessed by Pearson correlation analysis, respectively. The diagnostic values of IC in plain CT and venous phase NIC in TC patients were evaluated using the receiver operating characteristic curve. RESULTS: Malignant patients had lower IC in plain DSCT scanning, venous phase NIC, and ERß, and higher ERα and Ki67 than benign patients. IC level in plain DSCT scanning was inversely-correlated with ERα and Ki-67 positive expression rates, but positively-related to ERß to different degrees. For the diagnosis of TC patients, the AUC of IC level in plain DSCT was 0.771, with a cut-off value of 1.250 (97.06% sensitivity and 41.89% specificity), and the AUC of venous phase NIC was 0.738, with a cut-off value of 0.825 (100% sensitivity and 43.24% specificity). CONCLUSION: The IC level obtained from DSCT scanning could assist in the differential diagnosis of malignant and benign thyroid nodules and evaluation of biological behaviors.

Jojoba oil (JO) extracted from seeds has outstanding properties, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antibacterial activities, and can be stored forlong periodsof time. The unique properties of jojoba oil depend on its chemical composition; therefore, the effect of the jojoba genotype on the chemical properties and active components of the seed oil was evaluated in this study. Oil samples were collected from 15 elite Egyptian jojoba lines. The chemical composition, such as moisture, crude fiber, crude oil, ash, and crude protein of elite lines' seeds was determined to investigate the variation among them based on the jojoba genotype. In addition, the iodine value was obtained to measure the degree of jojoba oil unsaturation, whereas the peroxide number was determined as an indicator of the damage level in jojoba oil. Fatty acid composition was studied to compare elite jojoba lines. Fatty acid profiles varied significantly depending on the jojoba genotype. Gadoleic acid exhibited the highest percentage value (67.85-75.50%) in the extracted jojoba oil, followed by erucic acid (12.60-14.81%) and oleic acid (7.86-10.99%). The iodine value, peroxide number, and fatty acid composition of the tested elite jojoba lines were compared withthose reported by the International Jojoba Export Council (IJEC). The results showed that the chemical properties of jojoba oils varied significantly, depending on the jojoba genotype.

Iodine is a beneficial element for humans, animals and plants. This study was a comparison of the effectiveness of iodosalicylate uptake by lettuce. The experiment included two sub-blocks: organic soil and mineral soil with the addition of the same fertigation of plants (8 times every 7 days) with 10 µM solutions (100 mL/per one plant/one application) of potassium iodate (KIO3), salicylic acid (SA) alone or together with KIO3, 5-iodosalicylic acid (5-ISA) or 3,5-diiodosalicylic acid (3,5-diISA). None of the tested iodine compounds negatively affected the yield of lettuce. When growing plants on mineral soil, plants accumulated more iodine in the leaves than plants grown on peat substrate. The use of 5-ISA allowed for achieving better efficiency of plant biofortification in iodine than the application of KIO3 and 3,5-diISA. The type of soil significantly modified the chemical composition of lettuce.

BACKGROUND: Detection of fat content in thymic lesions is crucial to differentiate thymic hyperplasia from thymic tumors or other anterior mediastinal pathologies. PURPOSE: To assess the feasibility of dual-energy CT (DECT) fat content quantification for the differentiation of anterior mediastinal lesions from benign thymic lesions and the normal spectrum of the thymus. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Chest DECT images of 465 patients (median 61 years, 63% female) were visually evaluated by two radiologists and semiquantitatively scored based on the degree of fatty degeneration ranging from completely fatty (score 0) to predominantly soft-tissue (score 3), and anterior mediastinal mass (score 4). A subset of scans (n =134 including all cases with scores 2-4 and 20 randomly-selected cases from scores 0 and 1) underwent quantitative DECT analysis (fat fraction, iodine density, and conventional CT value). DECT values were compared across the semiquantitative scores. RESULTS: Results of visual evaluation included 35 with predominantly solid thymus (score 3) and 15 with anterior mediastinal mass (score 4). The most common clinical diagnoses of the 15 masses (including 8 with pathologic confirmation) were metastases (n = 10) and lymphoma (n = 4). CT values in the abnormal thymus were significantly higher than those in score 3 (median: 69.7 HU versus 19.9 HU, P <0.001). There was no significant difference in iodine density values (median: 1.7 mg/ml versus 1 mg/ml, P = 0.09). However, the fat fraction value was significantly lower in the abnormal thymus (score 4) than in the predominantly soft-tissue attenuation thymuses (score 3) (median: 12.8% versus 38.7%, P <0.001). ROC curve analysis showed that fat fraction had an AUC of 0.96 (P <0.001), with a cutoff of <39.2% fat fraction yielding 100% sensitivity and 85% specificity. CONCLUSION: DECT fat fraction measurements of the thymus may provide additional value in distinguishing anterior mediastinal lesions from benign thymus. Use of DECT may reduce the need for subsequent imaging evaluation.

Abstract Objectives: to evaluate the nutritional status of iodine in pregnant adolescents, taking into account the increase in the demand for iodine during pregnancy and the absence of iodization strategies for this population. Methods: cross-sectional study conducted with 62 pregnant and 71 non-pregnant adolescents assisted in primary care. The nutritional status of iodine was determined by urinary samples. The iodine concentration in the consumed culinary salt was also evaluated. For the comparative analyses of categorical variables, the Chi-square test was used and for the continuous variables, the Kruskal-Wallis test, considering a 95% confidence interval (CI) and significance level of 5%. Results: the mean iodine concentration in household salt was 25.1 mg/kg (CI95%= 11.1-67.5 mg/kg), with higher mean content in culinary salt in the group of pregnant women (p<0.028). Regarding the nutritional status of iodine, 71% of pregnant adolescents were deficient and 29% iodine-sufficient, with significant difference when compared to 38% of deficiency and 62% of sufficiency in the control group (p<0.001). Conclusions: there was an iodic deficiency among pregnant adolescents, even in the face of higher concentrations of iode in household salt, exposing a paradox between higher consumption and lower sufficiency in this group. Thus, it is suggested to consider iodine supplementation during pregnancy, seeking to minimize the effects of this deficiency on maternal and child health.


Resumo Objetivos: avaliar o estado nutricional de iodo em adolescentes gestantes, levando-se em consideração o aumento na demanda de iodo na gestação e a ausência de estratégias de iodização para essa população. Métodos: estudo transversal realizado com 62 adolescentes gestantes e 71 não gestantes assistidas na atenção primária. O estado nutricional de iodo foi determinado pela concentração de iodo em amostras urinárias. O teor de iodo no sal culinário também foi avaliado. Para as análises comparativas das variáveis categóricas utilizou-se o teste de qui-quadrado e para as variáveis contínuas o teste Kruskal-Wallis, considerando intervalo de confiança (IC) de 95% e nível de significância de 5%. Resultados: a média da concentração de iodo no sal domiciliar foi de 25,1 mg/kg (IC95%= 11,1-67,5 mg/kg), com maior teor médio no sal culinário de gestantes (p<0,028). Em relação ao estado nutricional de iodo, 71% das adolescentes gestantes mostraram-se deficientes e 29% iodo-suficientes, com diferença significativa quando comparadas aos 38% de deficiência e 62% de suficiência no grupo controle (p<0,001). Conclusões: observou-se deficiência iódica entre adolescentes gestantes, mesmo diante de maiores concentrações de iodo no sal domiciliar, expondo um paradoxo entre maior consumo e menor suficiência neste grupo. Assim, sugere-se considerar a suplementação de iodo na gestação, buscando-se minimizar os efeitos desta carência sobre a saúde maternoinfantil.

Background: Epigenetic disorders play an important role in the pathogenesis of autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT). Therefore, the study of the possible role of DNA methylation in AIT is of great significance to explore the pathogenesis of AIT. Methods: From May 2019 to June 2019, whole blood samples were collected from 176 AIT patients and 176 controls from different water iodine levels in Shandong Province, China. We used the Illumina Methylation 850K BeadChip to determine significant differences in methylation status of genes and used the MethylTarget™ assay to verify the methylation level in 176 cases and 176 controls. The relative mRNA levels of genes were detected by quantitative real-time-polymerase chain reaction. Results: There were multiple differential methylation sites in the HLA-DPB1 and PDCD1LG2 genes between the case and control population with different water iodine levels. Some target regions of HLA-DPB1 and PDCD1LG2 genes were negatively correlated with relative mRNA expression in the case and control populations and with different water iodine levels. Conclusions: There is differential methylation status in genomic DNA in patients with AIT. The methylation patterns of HLA-DPB1 and PDCD1LG2 genes related to cell adhesion molecule pathway may be different based on different water iodine levels. HLA-DPB1 and PDCD1LG2 genes related to the cell adhesion molecules pathway may play a role in the development of AIT. BACKGROUND: Necrotic pulmonary lesions manifest as relatively low-density internally on contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT). However, using CT to differentiate malignant and benign necrotic pulmonary lesions is challenging, as these lesions have similar peripheral enhancement. With the introduction of dual-energy spectral CT (DESCT), more quantitative parameters can be obtained and the ability to differentiate material compositions has been highly promoted. This study investigated the use of kVp-switching DESCT in differentiating malignant from benign necrotic lung lesions. METHODS: From October 2016 to February 2019, 40 patients with necrotic lung cancer (NLC) and 31 with necrotic pulmonary mass-like inflammatory lesion (NPMIL) were enrolled and underwent DESCT. The clinical characteristics of patients, CT morphological features, and DESCT quantitative parameters of lesions were compared between the two groups. Binary logistic regression analysis was performed to identify the independent prognostic factors differentiating NPMIL from NLC. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to assess the diagnostic performance of single-parameter and multiparametric analyses. RESULTS: Significant differences in age, C-reactive protein concentration, the slope of the spectral curve from 40 to 65 keV (K40-65 keV) of necrosis in non-contrast-enhanced scanning (NCS), arterial phase (AP) and venous phase (VP), effective atomic number of necrosis in NCS, and iodine concentration (IC) of the solid component in VP were observed between groups (all p < 0.05). The aforementioned parameters had area under the ROC curve (AUC) values of 0.747, 0.691, 0.841, 0.641, 0.660, 0.828, and 0.754, respectively, for distinguishing between NLC and NPMIL. Multiparametric analysis showed that age, K40-65 keV of necrosis in NCS, and IC of the solid component in VP were the most effective factors for differentiating NLC from NPMIL, with an AUC of 0.966 and percentage of correct class of 88.7%. CONCLUSIONS: DESCT can differentiate malignant from benign necrotic lung lesions with a relatively high accuracy.

BACKGROUND: Bacaba (Oenocarpus bacaba Mart.) has a high yield of oil, with the potential to produce biologically active natural products and can be considered a new "superfruit" with high value added. METHODS: Acid value, peroxide value, refractive index, saponification value, p-anisidine value, relative density, iodine value, total oxidation value, specific extinction coefficients at 232 and 270 nm (K232 and K270), ΔK, and color were determined. RESULTS: The most significant changes in the quality values, such as peroxide (26.25 mEq·kg-1), p-anisidine (11.41), acidity (14.66 mg KOH·g-1 oil), and total oxidation (63.92) were determined for 15 min of microwave heating. CONCLUSIONS: The microwave heating promoted the acceleration of oxidative processes showing that, overall, much care should be taken when heating the bacaba oil by microwave to avoid oil degradation.

129I is one of the main radioisotopes of iodine derived from the nuclear fuel cycle that can be found sustainably in the environment due to its long half-life. In coastal marine environment, brown macroalgae, such laminariales (or kelps), are known to naturally feature highest rates of iodine accumulation, and to be an important source of biogenic volatile iodinated compounds released to the atmosphere. These seaweeds are therefore likely to be significantly marked by but also potential vectors of radioactive iodine. In order to better understand the chemical and isotopic speciation of iodine in brown algal tissues, we combined mass spectrometry-based imaging approaches in natural samples of Laminaria digitata young sporophytes, collected at two different locations along the south coast of the English Channel (Roscoff and Goury). Laser desorption ionization (LDI) and desorption electrospray-ionization techniques (DESI), coupled with mass spectrometry, confirmed the predominance of inorganic I- species on the surface of fresh algae, and a peripheral iodine localization when applied on micro-sections. Moreover, radioactive isotope 129I was not detected on plantlet surface or in stipe sections of algal samples collected near Roscoff but was detected in L. digitata samples collected at Goury, near La Hague, where controlled liquid radioactive discharges from the ORANO La Hague reprocessing plant occur. At the subcellular scale, cryo-fixed micro-sections of algal blade samples from both sites were further analyzed by secondary ion mass spectrometry (nano-SIMS), leading to similar results. Even if the signal detected for 129I was much weaker than for 127I in samples from Goury, the chemical imaging revealed some differences in extracellular distribution between radioactive and stable iodine isotopes. Altogether LDI and nano-SIMS are complementary and powerful techniques for the detection and localization of iodine isotopes in algal samples, and for a better understanding of radioactive and stable iodine uptake mechanisms in the marine environment.

The aim of this study was to comprehensively assess the prevalence of goiter and thyroid nodules (TNs) in relation to China's iodine nutrition level over the past 20 years and provide an effective reference for developing health policies. PubMed, EMBASE, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chongqing VIP, and Chinese Wan Fang databases were searched for relevant studies from Jan 1996 to Feb 2020. Two reviewers extracted valid data from the eligible citations to determine the morbidity of TNs in different urinary iodine concentrations (UICs) and in patients of different genders, of different ages, who live in different geographic regions, and who live at different altitudes, as well as the P values of interactions between groups. There were 26 articles (34 studies) included in this analysis. The overall morbidity of TNs in mainland China was 23.4%. Morbidity was higher in urban areas (P < 0.001) than in rural and mixed areas. Coastal areas (P < 0.001), female patients (P < 0.001), high-altitude areas (P < 0.001), and residence in south China (P < 0.001) were all associated with higher morbidity of TNs. The lowest morbidity value of TNs, 16%, was in the more-than-adequate iodine subgroup. The highest morbidity, 27.2%, was in the adequate iodine subgroup. The morbidity of TNs increases with age, and women are more likely to have TNs. We also need to perform more epidemiological studies, and in the future, we should cultivate better understanding of the relationship between other thyroid diseases and provide more comprehensive and useful information for other researchers.

Two experiments were designed to determine the effects of dietary iodine and teat-dipping on the iodine status of dairy cows and their milk. Eight mid-lactation Holstein dairy cows with an initial body weight of 642 ± 62 kg and 145 ± 21 d in milk were studied for 2 periods over 44 d. In period 1, all cows were fed a basal diet supplemented with potassium iodide (KI) (10 mg I/Kg DM) for 8 d with no teat-dipping. In period 2, a pre-milking teat-dipping was applied for 10 d followed by no teat-dipping before milking (udder wash without iodine) and then post-dipping treatment was applied for 5 d. Feeding KI increased concentrations of iodine in serum, urine, and milk (P < 0.05). Switching from the KI supplementation to no iodine addition resulted in an immediate decrease of iodine in serum, urine, and milk (P < 0.05). Post teat-dipping resulted in increased iodine levels in serum, urine, and milk (P < 0.05). However, pre-milking teat-dipping did not affect iodine concentration compared to post-dipping. A 250 mL cup of milk from the control and KI-supplemented diets would provide 29.4% and 68.4%, respectively, of the adult-recommended dietary allowance for iodine. In conclusion, milk iodine concentration could be effectively enhanced by KI supplementation and teat-dipping practices.

The aim of this study was to determine the iodine nutritional status and the epidemiological characteristics of thyroid nodules (TNs) in the adult population of Heilongjiang Province. From December 2017 to December 2018, a total of 3661 adults aged 20-70 years were selected through probability proportional to size (PPS) sampling for a cross-sectional survey. During the field epidemiological investigation, each participant received a questionnaire survey and thyroid ultrasonography examination. The iodine concentrations in casual urine specimens and household edible salt were measured. The household coverage of iodized salt was 86.56%. The median urinary iodine concentration (MUIC) in the adult population in Heilongjiang Province was 161.57 µg/L (25th-75th percentile: 100.35-245.15 µg/L). The prevalence of TNs was 36.88%, and the prevalence in females was significantly higher than that in males (41.25% vs 32.50%, χ2 = 11.841, P < 0.01). The prevalence of TNs increased with age (χ2trend = 49.80, P < 0.001). The prevalence of multiple TNs increased with age (χ2trend = 48.709, P < 0.001). There was no significant difference in the MUIC between healthy control group and those with TNs (Z = - 1.386, P = 0.166). The female, age (40-49 age group, 50-59 age group, 60-70 age group), BMI (obesity, overweight), history of hypertension, history of diabetes, and smoking history were all independent risk factors that affected the occurrence of TNs. The iodine nutritional status of the adult population in Heilongjiang Province was adequate. The prevalence of TNs was higher in middle-aged and elderly women, so these individuals should be the focus of the prevention and treatment of thyroid nodule disease.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential effects of patient size and radiation dose on the accuracy of iodine quantification using dual-source dual-energy computed tomography (CT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three phantoms representing different patient sizes were constructed, containing iodine inserts with concentrations from 0 to 20 mg/ml. Dual-energy CT scans were performed at six dose levels from 2 to 30 mGy. Iodine concentrations were measured using a three-material-decomposition algorithm and their accuracy was assessed. RESULTS: In a small phantom, iodine quantification was accurate and consistent at all dose levels. In a medium phantom, minor underestimations were observed, and the results were consistent except at low dose. In the large phantom, more significant underestimation of iodine concentration was observed at higher doses (≥15 mGy), which was attributed to the beam-hardening effect. At lower doses, increasing upward bias was observed in the CT number, leading to significant overestimations of both iodine concentration and fat fraction, which was attributed to the photon-starvation effect. The severity of the latter effect was determined by mA instead of mAs, suggesting that the electronic noise, rather than the quantum noise, was responsible for the bias. Using higher kVp for the low-energy tube was found to alleviate these effects. CONCLUSION: Reliable iodine quantification can be achieved using dual-source CT, but the result can be affected by patient size and dose rate. In large patients, biases may occur due to the beam-hardening and the photon-starvation effects, in which case higher dose rate and higher kVp are recommended to minimize these effects.

Volatile iodine released from nuclear power plant reactors is radiological hazard to environment and human's health because of their high fission yield and environmental mobility. The complexity of nuclear waste management motivated the development of solid-phase adsorbents. Herein, co-radiation induced graft polymerization (CRIGP) was employed in the graft polymerization of N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone (NVP) onto polyethylene-coated polypropylene skin-core (PE/PP) fibers using electron beam (EB) irradiation. This work provides a one-step green synthetic approach to prepare iodine fibrous adsorbents without any chemical initiators or large amount of organic solvent. The original and modified PE/PP fibers were characterized by fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermogravimetric (TG) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to demonstrate the grafting of NVP onto the PE/PP fibers. The capacity of iodine absorbed by the PE/PP-g-PNVP fibers was 1237.8 mg/g after 180 min. Meanwhile, absorbents can be regenerated efficiently by two different means of ethanol elution and heating at 120 °C, respectively. Within 10 min, 94.17% and 90.12% of the iodine can be released from the PE/PP-g-PNVP fibers with these two methods, respectively. The adsorbent exhibited a long service life of at least ten adsorption-desorption cycles, suggesting that PE/PP-g-PNVP fibers might be a promising adsorbent for volatile iodine adsorption from fission products in nuclear power plant reactors.

The kinetics of catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) of low-erucic-acid rapeseed oil using ammonium formate as a hydrogen donor over a Ni-Ag0.15/SBA15 catalyst were studied. Then, a kinetic model for the hydrogenation of low-erucic-acid rapeseed oil was established, and it was found that the reaction rate constants of hydrogenations of 9c-18:1 and 12c-18:1 oleic acid were 0.1262 and 0.0148, and the catalytic selectivity of linoleic acid was 2.04. For the catalyst loading of 0.23%, the hydrogenation temperature was 80°C, the ammonium formate concentration was 0.32 mol/50 mL, and the low-erucic-acid rapeseed oil was hydrogenated in 90 min; it was also found that the iodine value of low-erucic-acid rapeseed oil was 80 g I2/100 g, the oleic acid content was 65%, and the trans fatty acids (TFAs) content was only 6.7%. Therefore, CTH may be widely used in the modification of oils and fats.

The present study aimed to evaluate the status of iodine nutrition and thyroid function in adults, to understand the distribution of thyroid disease in people with autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD) in different water iodine areas and to explore the relationship between serum iodine, urine iodine and thyroid function in people with AITD. A cross-sectional survey was conducted in areas of Shandong Province with different water iodine levels, and subsequently 1225 adults were enrolled from iodine-deficient (ID), iodine-adequate (IA) and iodine-excess (IE) areas. Urinary iodine, water iodine, salt iodine, serum iodine and thyroid function were measured. According to the urine iodine concentration, the ID and IA areas were defined as iodine sufficient and the IE area as iodine excessive. Urine iodine, serum iodine, free thyroxine (FT4) and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels were comparatively higher in the IE area. The positive rate of thyroglobulin antibody (19·1 %) and the prevalence of AITD (21·8 %) were higher in the ID areas; the prevalence of subclinical hypothyroidism was lowest in the ID areas (7·3 %) and highest in the IE area (16·3 %). Among the AITD population, urinary iodine concentration, free triiodothyronine, FT4 and TSH had a non-linear correlation with serum iodine; abnormal TSH level, serum iodine concentration > 110 µg/l and goitre were risk factors for AITD in adults, especially females. Our data collectively suggest that universal salt iodisation has improved the iodine nutritional status of the population in ID areas in China. Non-step-by-step iodine fortification may induce the transformation of thyroid autoimmune diseases from recessive-to-dominant in susceptible people. Moreover, enhanced monitoring of thyroid function in people with AITD is important.

The aim of this research was to quantify essential trace elements (iron, copper, zinc and iodine) and establish their speciation in human milk. Both the element and the species are important in new-born nutrition. Colostrum, and transitional and mature milks (25) were collected from 18 mothers of pre-term or full-term infants. Concentrations of the target elements were determined using ICP-MS. For speciation, HPLC coupled to ICP-MS was employed. Total contents of the micronutrients varied in mothers of pre-term (Fe = 0.997, Cu = 0.506, Zn = 4.15 and I = 0.458 mg L-1) and mothers of full-term (Fe = 0.733, Cu = 0.234, Zn = 2.91 and I = 0.255 mg L-1) infants. Fe, Cu and Zn were associated with biomolecules with high molecular mass compounds, such as immunoglobulins, albumin and lactoferrin whilst iodine was only found as iodide.
