BACKGROUND: This study aims to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of combined treatment with pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMFs) and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection in improving pain and functional mobility among patients with early-stage knee osteoarthritis (KOA). We hypothesize that this combined therapy can yield superior treatment outcomes. METHODS: Based on the different treatment regimens, we divided 48 patients diagnosed with Kellgren-Lawrence grades I-III KOA into 3 groups: the PRP group, the PEMFs group, and the PRP + PEMFs group. Each subtype of KOA patients was randomly assigned to different treatment groups. In the PRP group, patients received intra-articular injections of leukocyte-rich platelet-rich plasma once a month for 3 consecutive months. In the PEMFs group, patients receive low-frequency PEMFs irradiation therapy with a frequency of 30 Hz and intensity of 1.5 mT, once daily, 5 times a week, for a consecutive treatment period of 12 weeks. In the PRP + PEMFs group, patients receive both of the aforementioned treatment protocol. The treatment effects on patients are evaluated at baseline and at weeks 4, 8, and 12 post-treatment. Assessment parameters include visual analog scale for pain, Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index, Lequesne Index score, and knee joint range of motion. RESULTS: From the 4th to the 12th week of treatment, the visual analog scale scores, Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index scores, and Lequesne index scores of patients in all 3 groups gradually decreased, while knee joint mobility gradually increased (P < .05). At weeks 4, 8, and 12 after treatment, the PRP combined with PEMFs group showed significantly better scores compared to the PRP group and the PEMFs group, with statistically significant differences (P < .05). A total of 7 patients experienced adverse reactions such as knee joint swelling, low-grade fever, and worsening knee joint pain after treatment, all of which disappeared within 1 week after treatment. The incidence of complications did not differ significantly among the 3 groups (P = .67). CONCLUSION: PRP, PEMFs, and the combination of PRP and PEMFs therapy all effectively alleviate knee joint pain and improve joint function. However, compared to single treatment modalities, the combined therapy of PRP and PEMFs demonstrates more pronounced efficacy.

Glioblastoma (GBM) is associated with a median survival rate of less than 15 months, necessitating innovative treatment approaches. This study investigates the safety and efficacy of the low-frequency magnetic field (LFMF) OM-100 instrument in GBM therapy. In vitro experiments utilized normal astrocyte and GBM cell lines, determining that OM-100 at 100 kHz for 72 h selectively targeted GBM cells without harming normal cells. Subsequent analyses revealed OM-100's impact on cell viability, apoptosis, migration, invasion, reactive oxide species levels, and PD-L1 expression. In vivo studies on mice with U87-induced GBM demonstrated OM-100's synergy with anti-PD-1 therapy, leading to significant tumor volume reduction and increased apoptosis. Notably, OM-100 exhibited safety in healthy mice. Overall, OM-100 could enhance anti-PD-1 immunotherapy effectiveness probably by directly inhibiting tumor proliferation and migration as well as promoting PD-L1 expression, offering a promising therapeutic strategy for GBM treatment.

OBJECTIVE: Tendinopathies are diseases that often entail long-term treatment consisting of analgesics, physiotherapy, orthotics, and sparing. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of a single application of a high-energy PEMF (pulsed electromagnetic field) on pain perception and blood born inflammation parameters. METHODS: 34 patients were randomly assigned to a verum group (10 min PEMF, 0,78 T) or a placebo group (10 min sham condition). Prior to and up to one week after the patient blinded treatment (t1-t5), local pain state was assessed by means of algometry as pain pressure threshold (PPT). Accordingly, heat-shock protein 70 (HSP70) levels were analysed. Statistical analyses included 2­way ANOVA (2â€¯× 5). The clinical trial was registered (DRKS00031321). RESULTS: After randomization and drop-out (verum n = 17, placebo n = 13) baseline-analyses did not reveal significant between-group differences for PPT (p = 0,096), for HSP70 (p = 0,524), or any other sample characteristics (p > 0,05). Pain reduction during one week of observation showed to be significantly higher (p = 0,045, η2 = 0,013) for the PEMF group (PPT: +83 bis +139%) compared to the placebo group (PPT: +10 bis +36%). There were no HSP70 associated effects. CONCLUSIONS: A single bout of high energy PEMF led to an immediate pain relief in tendinopathy patients lasting at least for one week, but the hypothesized underlying HSP70 associated inflammatory pathway could not be confirmed.

PURPOSE: The aim of our study was to assess the possible benefits of Therapeutic Magnetic Resonance (TMR) in the treatment of spontaneous perineal lacerations and episiotomies in the postpartum. METHODS: We performed a prospective, non-pharmacologic, non-profit, monocentric interventional study on women who had a spontaneous laceration and/or an episiotomy at delivery. The TMR device treatment was accepted by 52 women, while 120 women underwent standard care. Patients were visited 1 day postpartum, before starting the treatment; then a follow-up visit was performed at 3 weeks, 5 weeks, and 3 months after delivery. The main endpoint was the time required for complete healing of the laceration and/or the episiotomy. Secondary endpoints were the prevalence of dehiscence, infections, urinary discomfort, urinary leakage, and the quality of restoration of sexual function. RESULTS: In the treatment group the REEDA score was significantly better both at 3- and 5-weeks postpartum follow-up. At 3 weeks and 5 weeks postpartum, we observed a significantly better outcome in the treatment group for all subjective complaints and perineal complications associated with lacerations and episiotomies. The percentage of patients who scored above the cutoff for sexual dysfunction was significantly better in the treatment group (83.3%) than in the control group (31.8%) (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: With this pilot study, we introduced low dose Pulsating Electromagnetic Fields (PEMFs) as a novel conservative and not pharmacological approach to reduce complications of perineal lesions. Our results demonstrated to significantly improve perineal wound healing and to ameliorate the sexual function in the postpartum.

The pathological and physiological process of spinal cord injury is complex, and there is currently no effective treatment method. Magnetic stimulation is an emerging electromagnetic therapy method in recent years, and studies have shown its potential to reduce cell apoptosis. This study used an improved Allen's method to replicate an incomplete spinal cord injury rat model, and repetitive magnetic stimulation (rMS) intervention was performed on the rats for 21 days. The research plan consists of two parts. The first part aims to observe the effects of rMS on motor function and neuronal cell apoptosis in rats. The Basso-Beattie-Bresnahan (BBB) score results indicate that rMS promotes the recovery of motor function in rats; H&E staining showed that rMS improved spinal cord structural damage and inflammatory infiltration; TUNEL and NeuN staining suggest that rMS can reduce cell apoptosis and promote neuronal cell survival. The second part aims to explore the mechanism of action of rMS. Immunofluorescence staining showed that after rMS intervention, the positive counts of PI3K and Akt increased, whereas the positive counts of caspase-3 decreased. Western blot showed that after rMS intervention, the expression of phospho-phosphatidylinositol-3 kinase (p-PI3K)/PI3K, phospho (p)-Akt/Akt, and Bcl-2 increased, whereas the expression of Bcl-2-associated X protein (Bax) and caspase-3 decreased. In summary, rMS can significantly reduce cell apoptosis in the damaged spinal cord and promote neuronal cell survival. Its mechanism of action may be related to promoting the expression of PI3K/Akt pathway proteins, upregulating the antiapoptotic protein Bcl-2, downregulating the proapoptotic protein Bax, and thereby inhibiting the expression of apoptotic protein caspase-3. NEW & NOTEWORTHY Spinal cord injury is a serious disabling central nervous system disease. Recently, research on magnetic stimulation therapy for spinal cord injury has been increasing, and its potential has gradually attracted the attention of experts. This study found that repetitive magnetic stimulation (rMS) can improve motor function and reduce neuronal apoptosis in spinal cord injury rats. The mechanism may be related to increasing the expression of phosphatidylinositol-3 kinase (PI3K)/Akt protein, thereby inhibiting cell apoptosis and promoting neuronal survival.

The article discusses the experience of complex therapy of rhinitis and sinusitis in children of various age groups, confirming the effectiveness of the combined effects of local thermotherapy, pulsed red light and low-frequency magnetic field. This combination of physical factors has an anti-inflammatory, decongestant, stimulating local cellular activity effect and helps to increase the effectiveness and reduce the overall treatment time for these diseases. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the combined use of heat, red spectrum phototherapy and magnetic field in the treatment of children with rhinitis and sinusitis. Materials and methods. The observation included 30 children with rhinitis and 40 children with sinusitis aged 2-18 years, receiving combined physiotherapy procedures as part of the main treatment. Results and its discussion. The positive effect of the combined effects of thermotherapy, pulsed light radiation in the red range and low-frequency magnetic field on clinical symptoms and functional indicators of nasal breathing in children with rhinitis and sinusitis has been confirmed. Conclusions. The use of a course of procedures combined with the effects of local thermotherapy, pulsed red light and low-frequency magnetic field against the background of the main treatment helps to increase the effectiveness of the treatment of respiratory infections of the upper respiratory tract in children of various age groups.

BACKGROUND: Canine coxofemoral joint osteoarthritis is a common, painful and debilitating condition. The objective of this study was to evaluate if any measurable changes in pain or lameness occurred in this patient group immediately after a single treatment with pulsed electromagnetic field therapy. Eight dogs with coxofemoral joint osteoarthritis presenting with signs of pain and lameness were prospectively recruited to this randomised, controlled, double blinded, cross-over study. Subjects attended the research facility on two occasions for one active and one placebo treatment with pulsed electromagnetic field therapy. The immediate effect of one pulsed electromagnetic field therapy treatment on pain and lameness was measured subjectively with the Helsinki Chronic Pain Index and Visual Analogue Scale and objectively using a pressure sensitive walkway. RESULTS: A statistically significant difference (P = 0.03) for change in stride length in the affected limb was recorded for subjects between the active and placebo treatments with pulsed electromagnetic field therapy. Within the active treatment results, there was a statistically significant change in the measurement for reach (P = 0.04) and stride length (P = 0.047) which got shorter in the affected limb post treatment. For the subjective outcome measures, there was no statistically significant difference between the active and placebo treatments for the evening of the treatment day or the next morning from pre-treatment values. Within the placebo treatment results a statistically significant change (improvement) was detected in Visual Analogue Score (P = 0.03) between pre-treatment and the next morning values. CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study do not show demonstrable improvement in owner assessed pain levels or temporospatial performance in dogs with coxofemoral joint osteoarthritis immediately after a single application of pulsed electromagnetic field therapy.

Pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMFs) are recognized for their potential in regenerative medicine, offering a non-invasive avenue for tissue rejuvenation. While prior research has mainly focused on their effects on bone and dermo-epidermal tissues, the impact of PEMFs on nervous tissue, particularly in the context of neuropathy associated with the diabetic foot, remains relatively unexplored. Addressing this gap, our preliminary in vitro study investigates the effects of complex magnetic fields (CMFs) on glial-like cells derived from mesenchymal cell differentiation, serving as a model for neuropathy of the diabetic foot. Through assessments of cellular proliferation, hemocompatibility, mutagenicity, and mitochondrial membrane potential, we have established the safety profile of the system. Furthermore, the analysis of microRNAs (miRNAs) suggests that CMFs may exert beneficial effects on cell cycle regulation, as evidenced by the upregulation of the miRNAs within the 121, 127, and 142 families, which are known to be associated with mitochondrial function and cell cycle control. This exploration holds promise for potential applications in mitigating neuropathic complications in diabetic foot conditions.

Background: Gigantocellular reticular nucleus (GRNs) executes a vital role in locomotor recovery after spinal cord injury. However, due to its unique anatomical location deep within the brainstem, intervening in GRNs for spinal cord injury research is challenging. To address this problem, this study adopted an extracorporeal magnetic stimulation system to observe the effects of selective magnetic stimulation of GRNs with iron oxide nanoparticles combined treadmill training on locomotor recovery after spinal cord injury, and explored the possible mechanisms. Methods: Superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO) nanoparticles were stereotactically injected into bilateral GRNs of mice with moderate T10 spinal cord contusion. Eight-week selective magnetic stimulation produced by extracorporeal magnetic stimulation system (MSS) combined with treadmill training was adopted for the animals from one week after surgery. Locomotor function of mice was evaluated by the Basso Mouse Scale, Grid-walking test and Treadscan analysis. Brain MRI, anterograde virus tracer and immunofluorescence staining were applied to observe the tissue compatibility of SPIO in GRNs, trace GRNs' projections and evaluate neurotransmitters' expression in spinal cord respectively. Motor-evoked potentials and H reflex were collected for assessing the integrity of cortical spinal tract and the excitation of motor neurons in anterior horn. Results: (1) SPIO persisted in GRNs for a minimum of 24 weeks without inducing apoptosis of GRN cells, and degraded slowly over time. (2) MSS-enabled treadmill training dramatically improved locomotor performances of injured mice, and promoted cortico-reticulo-spinal circuit reorganization. (3) MSS-enabled treadmill training took superimposed roles through both activating GRNs to drive more projections of GRNs across lesion site and rebalancing neurotransmitters' expression in anterior horn of lumbar spinal cord. Conclusion: These results indicate that selective MSS intervention of GRNs potentially serves as an innovative strategy to promote more spared fibers of GRNs across lesion site and rebalance neurotransmitters' expression after spinal cord injury, paving the way for the structural remodeling of neural systems collaborating with exercise training, thus ultimately contributing to the reconstruction of cortico-reticulo-spinal circuit.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effect of sinusoidal alternating electromagnetic field (SEMF) on fracture healing and its mechanism. METHODS: Femoral fracture model was established using specific pathogen free male Wistar rats. Thirty rats were randomly divided into the control and SEMF groups with 15 rats in each group. The SEMF group was given 50 Hz 1.8 mT for 90 min every day, while the control group was not treated. X-ray examinations were performed every two weeks to determine the formation of bone scabs. Three rats from both groups were sacrificed after 2 and 4 weeks of treatment. Protein was extracted from the fractured femurs, and the expression of type Ⅰ collagen (COL-1), osterix (OSX), Runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) was detected by Western blotting. After 8 weeks, the femur on the operated side was taken for micro-CT scanning to observe fracture healing, angiography to observe blood vessel growth, and organs such as hearts, livers, spleens, lungs, and kidneys were taken for safety evaluation by hematoxylin-eosin staining (HE staining). RESULTS: The bone scab scores of the SEMF group were significantly higher than those of the control group after 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks of treatment (all P<0.01). The fracture healing of the SEMF group was better than that of the control group after 8 weeks, and the bone volume scores of the two groups were 0.243±0.012 and 0.186±0.008, respectively (P<0.01); the number of blood vessels in the SEMF group was also more than that of the control group after 8 weeks. Western blotting results showed that the expressions of COL-1, OSX, RUNX2, and VEGF were higher in the SEMF group than those in the control group after 2 and 4 weeks of treatment (all P<0.05). HE staining showed that histopathological results of the examined organs were normal in both groups. CONCLUSIONS: SEMF can accelerate fracture healing by promoting the expression of osteogenic factors and vascular proliferation without significant adverse effects.

With the substantial increase in the overuse of glucocorticoids (GCs) in clinical medicine, the prevalence of glucocorticoid-induced osteonecrosis of the femoral head (GC-ONFH) continues to rise in recent years. However, the optimal treatment for GC-ONFH remains elusive. Rotating magnetic field (RMF), considered as a non-invasive, safe and effective approach, has been proved to have multiple beneficial biological effects including improving bone diseases. To verify the effects of RMF on GC-ONFH, a lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and methylprednisolone (MPS)-induced invivo rat model, and an MPS-induced invitro cell model have been employed. The results demonstrate that RMF alleviated bone mineral loss and femoral head collapse in GC-ONFH rats. Meanwhile, RMF reduced serum lipid levels, attenuated cystic lesions, raised the expression of anti-apoptotic proteins and osteoprotegerin (OPG), while suppressed the expression of pro-apoptotic proteins and nuclear factor receptor activator-κB (RANK) in GC-ONFH rats. Besides, RMF also facilitated the generation of ALP, attenuated apoptosis and inhibits the expression of pro-apoptotic proteins, facilitated the expression of OPG, and inhibited the expression of RANK in MPS-stimulated MC3T3-E1 cells. Thus, this study indicates that RMF can improve GC-ONFH in rat and cell models, suggesting that RMF have the potential in the treatment of clinical GC-ONFH.

Application of physical forces, ranging from ultrasound to electric fields, is recommended in various clinical practice guidelines, including those for treating cancers and bone fractures. However, the mechanistic details of such treatments are often inadequately understood, primarily due to the absence of comprehensive study models. In this study, we demonstrate that an alternating magnetic field (AMF) inherently possesses a direct anti-cancer effect by enhancing oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) and thereby inducing metabolic reprogramming. We observed that the proliferation of human glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) cells (U87 and LN229) was inhibited upon exposure to AMF within a specific narrow frequency range, including around 227 kHz. In contrast, this exposure did not affect normal human astrocytes (NHA). Additionally, in mouse models implanted with human GBM cells in the brain, daily exposure to AMF for 30 min over 21 days significantly suppressed tumor growth and prolonged overall survival. This effect was associated with heightened reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and increased manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) expression. The anti-cancer efficacy of AMF was diminished by either a mitochondrial complex IV inhibitor or a ROS scavenger. Along with these observations, there was a decrease in the extracellular acidification rate (ECAR) and an increase in the oxygen consumption rate (OCR). This suggests that AMF-induced metabolic reprogramming occurs in GBM cells but not in normal cells. Our results suggest that AMF exposure may offer a straightforward strategy to inhibit cancer cell growth by leveraging oxidative stress through metabolic reprogramming.

PURPOSE: To study the effect of magnetic therapy on the formation of distraction regenerate of the lower jaw in patients with lower micrognathia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study comprised 159 patients with inferior micrognathia of congenital and acquired etiology. The patients were divided into 2 groups. The main group consisted of 112 patients who received magnetic therapy: 55 patients with congenital micrognathia and 57 patients with acquired micrognathia. The control group included 47 patients who did not undergo magnetic therapy: 20 patients with congenital micrognathia and 27 patients with acquired micrognathia. Magnetic therapy was performed daily starting from day 1 or 2 after surgery. Ultrasound monitoring began on the 7th day of distraction and was carried out every 3-4 days, which made it possible to assess the dynamics of the formation of the distraction regenerate. RESULTS: Ultrasound examination on the 7th day of distraction revealed that in the main group the number of distraction regenerates of the normotrophic type was 36.5%, hypotrophic type 18%, hypertrophic type 54.5%. In the control group, the corresponding rates were 53%, 31% and 22%. CONCLUSION: Magnetic therapy induces osteogenesis and accelerates the maturation of the distraction regenerate. This makes it possible to accelerate the pace of distraction without reducing the quality of the regenerate.

BACKGROUND: Urinary dysfunction is linked to spinal cord injury (SCI). The quality of life (QoL) declines in both neurogenic bladder impairment and non-disordered patients. OBJECTIVE: To ascertain the effectiveness of pulsed magnetic therapy on urinary impairment and QoL in individuals with traumatic incomplete SCI. METHODS: This study included forty male paraplegic subjects with neurogenic detrusor overactivity (NDO) for more than one year following incomplete SCI between T6-T12. Their ages ranged from 20 to 35 and they engaged in therapy for three months. The subjects were divided into two groups of equal size. Individuals in Group I were managed via pulsed magnetic therapy once per week plus pelvic floor training three times a week. Individuals in Group II were managed with only three times a week for pelvic floor training. All patients were examined for bladder cystometric investigations, pelvic-floor electromyography (EMG), and SF-Qualiveen questionnaire. RESULTS: There was a noteworthy increment in individuals in Group I in volume of bladder at first desire to void and maximum cystometric capacity, detrusor pressure at Qmax, and maximum flow rate. There was a momentous increment in Group I in measures of evaluation of EMG biofeedback. There was a notable rise in Group I in SF-Qualiveen questionnaire. CONCLUSION: Magnetic stimulation should be favored as beneficial adjunct to traditional therapy in the management of bladder impairment and enhancing QoL in individuals with SCI.

PURPOSE: PEMF (pulsed electromagnetic fields) founds application in several medical fields to accelerate bone wounds healing and to reduce inflammation. The aim of our study was to evaluate the effectiveness of PEMF in reducing postoperative swelling and pain in patients undergoing orthognathic surgery. METHODS: A prospective observational monocentric study was conducted on a sample of 30 patients undergone to orthognathic surgery in Maxillofacial Surgery Unit of University of Naples Federico II. The patients who followed these inclusion criteria were enrolled in the study: age ≥ 18 years, Class III malocclusion, Surgical procedure of Le Fort I osteotomy + Bilateral Sagittal Split Osteotomy (BSSO), Written informed consent. Patients were divided into two groups: Group SD) postoperative standard treatment with medical therapy and cryotherapy, Group SD + PEMF) postoperative standard therapy + PEMF. Each patient underwent a 3D facial scan, at one (1d) and four (4d) days after surgery to compare the swelling reduction. The pain score was assessed through VAS score and analgesics administration amount. RESULTS: In SD + PEMF group, the facial volume reduction between 1d and 4d scan was on average 56.2 ml (6.23%), while in SD group, it was 23.6 ml (2.63%). The difference between the two groups was 3.6% (p = 0.0168). VAS pain values were significantly higher in SD group compared to SD + PEMF group in the second day after surgery (P = 0.021) and in the total 4 days (P = 0.008). CONCLUSIONS: Our data suggest that PEMF is valid tool to promote faster postoperative swelling and pain reduction in patients undergoing orthognathic surgery.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative pain and swelling associated with the removal of the third molar (M3) adversely affect the patient's quality of life. PURPOSE: The study aims to measure pain reduction and analgesic use in patients treated with pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy following M3 removal and compares it to patients who did not receive PEMF. STUDY DESIGN, SETTING, SAMPLE: The single-center study was designed as a randomized, prospective, controlled, double-blinded trial on a sample of patients with impacted mandibular M3 ascertained by x-ray orthopantomography and computed tomography. PREDICTOR/EXPOSURE/INDEPENDENT VARIABLES: The predictor variable is postoperative pain management. It was assigned randomly to each subject who received either PEMF or standard therapy. MAIN OUTCOME VARIABLES: The pain was quantified using a 100 mm visual analog scale and the number of analgesics taken. Each subject kept a daily clinical diary for 7 days, recording the amount of pain using the visual analog scale and the number of analgesic tablets taken. COVARIATES: The study covariates were age, sex, tobacco use, and Pell and Gregory's classification of M3s. ANALYSES: Student's t test was used, placing the statistical significance for P value < .05. The primary planned analysis was a 2-group, continuity-corrected, χ2 test of equality of proportions. RESULTS: The study sample included 90 patients, 47 men and 43 women, with an average age of 32.43 ± 8.80 years. PEMF was statistically associated with improved pain reduction (2.08 vs 5.04 with a P value = .0002) and consumption of fewer analgesics than the control group (2.6 vs 5.8 with a P value = .0062). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: The study's results attest to the effectiveness of PEMF therapy in pain control after M3 surgery.

BACKGROUND: Gait disorders in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) can become disabling with disease progression without effective treatment. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the efficacy of intermittent θ burst trans-spinal magnetic stimulation (TsMS) in PD patients with gait and balance disorders. METHODS: This was a randomized, parallel, double-blind, controlled trial. Active or sham TsMS was applied at third thoracic vertebra with 100% of the trans-spinal motor threshold, during 5 consecutive days. Participants were evaluated at baseline, immediately after last session, 1 and 4 weeks after last session. Primary outcome was Total Timed Up and Go (TUG) values comparing active versus sham phases 1 week after intervention. The secondary outcome measurements consisted of motor, gait and balance scales, and questionnaires for quality of life and cognition. RESULTS: Thirty-three patients were included, average age 68.5 (6.4) years in active group and 70.3 (6.3) years in sham group. In active group, Total TUG mean baseline was 107.18 (95% CI, 52.1-116.1), and 1 week after stimulation was 93.0 (95% CI, 50.7-135.3); sham group, Total TUG mean baseline was 101.2 (95% CI, 47.1-155.3) and 1 week after stimulation 75.2 (95% CI 34.0-116.4), P = 0.54. Similarly, intervention had no significant effects on secondary outcome measurements. During stimulation period, five patients presented with mild side effects (three in active group and two in sham group). DISCUSSION: TsMS did not significantly improve gait or balance analysis in patients with PD and gait disorders. The protocol was safe and well tolerated. © 2024 International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society.

Osteoporotic osteoarthritis (OPOA) is a specific phenotype of OA with high incidence and severe cartilage damage. This study aimed to explore the protective efficacy of PEMF on the progression of OPOA and observed the effects of PEMF on PPARγ, autophagy- and apoptosis-related proteins in OPOA rats. Rats were randomly divided into three groups: control group, OPOA group, and PEMF group (n = 6). One week after surgery, the rats in PEMF group were subjected to PEMF (3.82 mT, 8 Hz, 40 min/day and 5 day/week) for 12 weeks. Results showed that PEMF retarded cartilage degeneration and bone loss, as evidenced by pathological staining image, decreased MMP-13 expression and increased bone mineral density. PEMF inhibited the serum levels of inflammatory cytokines, and the expressions of caspase-3 and caspase-8, while upregulated the expression of PPARγ. Moreover, PEMF significantly improved the autophagy disorders, represented by decrease expressions of Beclin-1, P62, and LC3B. The research demonstrates that PEMF can effectively prevent cartilage and subchondral bone destruction in OPOA rats. The potential mechanism may be related to upregulation of PPARγ, inhibition of chondrocyte apoptosis and inflammation, and improvement of autophagy disorder. PEMF therapy thus shows promising application prospects in the treatment of postmenopausal OA.


Osteoporotic osteoarthritis (OPOA) is a very common combination disease, that characterized by chronic pain, swollen joints and susceptibility to fractures. It is particularly common in postmenopausal women. At present, drug therapy is the main treatment method, but the adverse reactions are serious and can not stop the progression of the disease. PEMF is a safe physical therapy that has been shown to increase bone density, reduce pain, and improve joints mobility. In this study, we aimed to explore the protective effect and potential mechanism of PEMF on OPOA. We found that PEMF significantly inhibited the inflammatory response, ameliorated the damaged cartilage and subchondral bone in OPOA rats, that maybe related to the regulation of chondrocyte autophagy and apoptosis. This study provided a new vision for PEMF' treatment on OPOA and has positive significance for the clinical promotion of PEMF.

PURPOSE: With the growing demand for more effective fat reduction techniques, a combination of synchronized radiofrequency (RF) and HIFEM has been introduced. Preceding studies evidenced the ability of RF+HIFEM to maintain the fat tissue temperature at the levels necessary for adipocyte apoptosis while documenting the induced changes to the fat tissue during the several weeks after the treatment. This study aims to demonstrate the induction of apoptosis by RF+HIFEM technology in the early stages through the assessment of caspase-3 protein, one of the apoptosis-executing proteases. DESIGN: In this two-arm, single-center, randomized trial, nine human subjects were enrolled and assigned into two groups, either the active group (N = 6) treated with both RF+HIFEM set at the highest tolerated levels or the sham group (N = 3) treated with 5% of the maximum RF+HIFEM power, serving as a control. All patients were scheduled to undergo one treatment visit of the abdominal area, two follow-up visits at 8 and 24 h, and one safety visit 7 days after the treatment. A punch biopsy (5 mm in diameter, approximately 10 mm in depth) was obtained from the abdominal area at the baseline and consecutive follow-up visits. Samples were fixed, and cut into 5 µm thick slices, and immunohistochemical staining was used to visualize the Caspase-3, revealing the adipocyte nuclei where apoptosis processes are in progress. FINDINGS: Documented findings suggest that the temperature threshold of 43-45°C is required to initiate fat apoptosis and consequent reduction in adipocyte number was achieved during the combined treatment with RF+HIFEM. The active group showed an elevated ratio of positively stained nuclei versus all adipocyte nuclei found on the evaluated slices-referred to as the apoptotic index (AI). The AI significantly (p < 0.001) increased at both 8 h (47.01 ± 10.56%) and 24 h (43.58 ± 6.35%) posttreatment. The Sham group showed no significant change in the AI (p > 0.05). No adverse events or side effects related to the treatments were observed. SUMMARY: This study supports previously published evidence on fat reduction after RF+HIFEM treatment, documenting the safe initiation of adipocyte programmed cell death posttreatment.

Introducción: La fibromialgia afecta el movimiento corporal. Provoca dolor en puntos claves, causa molestias musculoesqueléticas y limita la actividad de las personas. Se ha descrito que la fisioterapia mejora de calidad de vida de estos pacientes. Objetivo: Identificar los test de evaluación y los procesos de intervención fisioterapéutica utilizados en la fibromialgia. Métodos: Se realizó una revisión de literatura en PubMed, ScientsDirect, SciELO y LILLACS, con la terminología MeSH y DeCS, entre 2017 y 2022. Resultados: La escala visual análoga y la algometría por presión son los test utilizados para el dolor. La hidroterapia, el cupping, la punción seca, el masaje sueco, los ejercicios respiratorios y los aeróbicos resultan los métodos de intervención con más uso. Conclusiones: Los procesos de intervención se deben plantear según las evaluaciones del dolor y la funcionalidad en la persona. El tratamiento fisioterapéutico de la fibromialgia debe tener un componente de ejercicio físico aérobico y fuerza para disminuir la fatiga; devolverle al músculo su funcionalidad y aumentar la capacidad aeróbica(AU)


Introduction: Fibromyalgia affects body movement. It causes pain in key points, it causes musculoskeletal discomfort and it limits the persons's activity. It has been described that physiotherapy improves the quality of life of these patients. Objective: To identify the evaluation tests and physiotherapy intervention processes used in fibromyalgia. Methods: A literature review was carried out in PubMed, ScientsDirect, Scielo and LILLACS, with the terminology MeSH and DeCS, from 2017 to 2022. Results: The visual analogue scale and pressure algometry are the tests used for pain. Hydrotherapy, cupping, dry needling, Swedish massage, breathing exercises and aerobics are the most commonly used intervention methods. Conclusions: Intervention processes should be planned according to the evaluations of pain and functionality in the person. The physiotherapy treatment of fibromyalgia must have a component of aerobic physical exercise and strength to reduce fatigue, to return the muscle to its functionality and increase aerobic capacity(AU)
