There are no approved therapeutics for psychostimulant use and recurrence of psychostimulant use. However, in preclinical rodent models environmental enrichment can decrease psychostimulant self-administration of low unit doses and cue-induced amphetamine seeking. We have previously demonstrated that glutamate-dependent therapeutics are able to alter amphetamine seeking to amphetamine-associated cues only in enriched rats. In the current experiment, we will determine if enrichment can attenuate responding and cue-induced amphetamine seeking during extended access to a high dose of intravenous amphetamine. We will also determine if N-acetylcysteine (NAC), a glutamate dependent therapeutic, can attenuate amphetamine seeking in differentially reared rats. Female and male Sprague-Dawley rats were reared in enriched, isolated, or standard conditions from postnatal day 21-51. Rats were trained to self-administer intravenous amphetamine (0.1â¯mg/kg/infusion) during twelve 6-hour sessions. During the abstinence period, NAC (100â¯mg/kg) or saline was administered daily. Following a cue-induced amphetamine-seeking test, astrocyte densities within regions of the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and nucleus accumbens (ACb) were quantified using immunohistochemistry. Environmental enrichment decreased responding for amphetamine and during the cue-induced amphetamine-seeking test. NAC did not attenuate cue-induced amphetamine seeking or alter astrocyte density. Across all groups, female rats self-administered less amphetamine but responded more during cue-induced amphetamine seeking than male rats. While amphetamine increased astrocyte densities within the ACb and mPFC, it did not alter mPFC astrocyte densities in female rats. The results suggest that enrichment can attenuate responding during extended access to a high dose of amphetamine and the associated cues. Sex alters amphetamine-induced changes to astrocyte densities in a regionally specific matter.

PURPOSE: Research has demonstrated negative environmental impacts from in-person conferences. Nonetheless, there are benefits to in-person meetings. The 2023 American Pediatric Surgical Association (APSA) meeting was mostly attended in-person. To understand the environmental impact, this study quantifies the travel emissions generated from that meeting. METHODS: The 2023 APSA meeting was held in Orlando, FL. Using a de-identified list of attendees, the distance between the attendee's home city and Orlando was determined. If ≤ 200 miles, it was assumed the attendee drove. If > 200 miles, the distance between the closest airport and Orlando International Airport was determined. Travel emissions factors represent emissions per person-mile traveled. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Greenhouse Gas Inventory emissions factors for carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O) were multiplied by travel distances to determine the emissions generated from each attendee. These were aggregated to determine the total meeting travel emissions. The EPA Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies Calculator was used to convert the emissions to a relatable outcome. RESULTS: There were 757 in-person and 135 virtual attendees. Fifty attendees drove and 707 attendees flew. This generated 267,279 kg CO2, 1222 gm CH4, and 8486 gm N2O; equivalent to the emissions generated from the average annual use of 60 gasoline-powered passenger vehicles in the United States. CONCLUSION: Based on attendance to the 2023 APSA meeting, there is a preference for meeting in-person, though the associated environmental cost should be recognized. Based on these results, APSA should consider strategies to mitigate the environmental impact of its annual meeting. LEVELS OF EVIDENCE: N/A.

Our understanding of the normal variation in the upper respiratory tract (URT) microbiota across the human lifespan and how these relate to host, environment, and health is limited. We studied the microbiota of 3,104 saliva (<10 year-olds)/oropharynx (≥10 year-olds) and 2,485 nasopharynx samples of 3,160 Dutch individuals 0-87 years of age, participating in a cross-sectional population-wide study (PIENTER-3) using 16S-rRNA sequencing. The microbiota composition was strongly related to age, especially in the nasopharynx, with maturation occurring throughout childhood and adolescence. Clear niche- and age-specific associations were found between the microbiota composition and host/environmental factors and health outcomes. Among others, social interaction, sex, and season were associated with the nasopharyngeal microbial community. By contrast, the oral microbiota was more related to antibiotics, tobacco, and alcohol use. We present an atlas of the URT microbiota across the lifespan in association with environment and health, establishing a baseline for future research.

As the primary goal of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), poverty eradication is still one of the major challenges faced by countries around the world, and relative poverty is a comprehensive poverty pattern triggered by the superposition of economic, social, and environmental dimensions. Therefore, Therefore, this paper introduces the perspective of coupled coordination to consider the formation of relative poverty, constructs indicators in three major dimensions: economic, social, and environmental, proposes a fast and more accurate method of identifying relative poverty in a region by using machine learning, measures the degree of coupled coordination of China's relatively poor provinces using a coupled coordination model and analyzes the relationship with the level of relative poverty, and puts forward suggestions for poverty management on this basis using typology classification. The results of the study show that: 1) the fusion of data crawlers, remote sensing space, and other multi-source data to construct the dataset and propose a fast and efficient regional relative poverty identification method based on big data with low comprehensive cost and high identification accuracy of 0.914. 2) Currently, 70.83% of the economic-social-environmental systems of the relatively poor regions are in the dysfunctional type and are in a state of disordered development and malignant constraints. The regions showing coupling disorders are mainly clustered in the three southern prefectures of Xinjiang, Qinghai, Gansu, Yunnan, and Sichuan, and their spatial distribution is relatively concentrated. 3) The types of poverty and their coupled and coordinated development in each region show large spatial variability, requiring differentiated poverty eradication countermeasures tailored to local conditions to achieve sustainable regional economic-social-environmental development.

It has been demonstrated that an enriched environment (EE) treatment can alter neuroplasticity in neurodegenerative diseases. However, the role of EE treatment in ischemic stroke remains unclear. Previous findings have revealed that EE treatment can promote cerebral activin-receptor-like-kinase-5 (ALK5) expression after cerebral ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. ALK5 has been identified as a potential mediator of neuroplasticity through its modulation of Smad2/3 and Gadd45ß. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate whether EE treatment could promote neurofunctional recovery by regulating the ALK5/Smad2/3/Gadd45ß pathway. The study utilized the rat model of middle cerebral artery occlusion/reperfusion (MCAO/R). The ALK5/Smad2/3/Gadd45ß signaling pathway changes were evaluated using western blotting (WB). Brain injury was assessed by infarct volume and neurobehavioral scores. The effect of EE treatment on neurogenesis was evaluated using Doublecortin (DCX) and Nestin, axonal plasticity with biotinylated dextran amine (BDA) nerve tracing, and dendritic plasticity was assessed using Golgi-Cox staining. EE treatment has been demonstrated to modulate the Smad2/3/Gadd45ß pathway by regulating the expression of ALK5. The protective effects of EE treatment on brain infarct volume, neurological function, newborn neurons, dendritic and axonal plasticity following cerebral I/R injury were counteracted by ALK5 silencing. EE treatment can enhance neurofunctional recovery after cerebral I/R injury, which is achieved by regulating the ALK5/Smad2/3/Gadd45ß signaling pathway to promote neuroplasticity.

A life cycle assessment (LCA) study was completed to understand the environmental impacts associated with the land application of wastes produced from rural food-processing operations for final disposal. The system boundaries for the two comprised scenarios included the storage of the produced non-agriculture source material (NASM), transportation to an applicable location, land application of the NASM, and the impacts of the final emissions to the soil and groundwater for a full year. The Tool for the Reduction and Assessment of Chemicals and Other Environmental Impacts (TRACI) v2.1 was selected as the impact assessment method. Furthermore, SimaPro 8.0.4.26 was the LCA model version that was used with all the databases included. Overall, the LCA study showed that the most significant environmental impacts associated with the disposal process resulted from carcinogenic and eutrophication emissions. The component that contributed the most to carcinogenic impacts was found to be from the material required to create the concrete storage tank. Additionally, eutrophication was identified to be a potential significant impact, if proper setback requirements are not followed for the NASM material. Results of the study look to inform stakeholders about the benefits and risks encountered from NASM disposal. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Life cycle assessment was completed on a representative NASM disposal system using land application. Concrete tank used for storage of NASM had the most significant impact in carcinogenic emissions. Eutrophication impacts were the second most significant impact behind carcinogenic emissions.

We study the relationship between crude oil price volatility and corporate environmental performance. Using an extensive dataset from 32 countries consisting of 18,464 firm-year observations, we provide strong evidence that oil price volatility significantly increases firms' environmental performance. Our main inference is robust when using alternative measures of oil price volatility and environmental performance, alternative econometric specifications and samples, and several approaches to control for endogeneity. In a set of additional analyses, we first conduct a difference-in-differences analysis that exploits the Arab Spring as an exogenous oil price volatility increase and document a stronger relationship between oil price volatility and environmental performance in the aftermath of the Arab Spring. We second identify (i) capital expenditures and (ii) alternative energy importation as two mechanisms through which oil price volatility influences environmental performance. We finally show that national culture plays a significant role in moderating the relationship between oil price volatility and environmental performance. Taken together, our empirical findings highlight the role of economic uncertainty in affecting firms' environmental performance and provide significant contributions to management and policymakers.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the associaiton between environmental measures and brain volumes and its potential mediators. STUDY DESIGN: This was a prospective study. METHODS: Our analysis included 34,454 participants (53.4% females) aged 40-73 years at baseline (between 2006 and 2010) from the UK Biobank. Brain volumes were measured using magnetic resonance imaging between 2014 and 2019. RESULTS: Greater proximity to greenspace buffered at 1000 m at baseline was associated with larger volumes of total brain measured 8.8 years after baseline assessment (standardized ß (95% CI) for each 10% increment in coverage: 0.013(0.005,0.020)), grey matter (0.013(0.006,0.020)), and white matter (0.011(0.004,0.017)) after adjustment for covariates and air pollution. The corresponding numbers for natural environment buffered at 1000 m were 0.010 (0.004,0.017), 0.009 (0.004,0.015), and 0.010 (0.004,0.016), respectively. Similar results were observed for greenspace and natural environment buffered at 300 m. The strongest mediator for the association between greenspace buffered at 1000 m and total brain volume was smoking (percentage (95% CI) of total variance explained: 7.9% (5.5-11.4%)) followed by mean sphered cell volume (3.3% (1.8-5.8%)), vitamin D (2.9% (1.6-5.1%)), and creatinine in blood (2.7% (1.6-4.7%)). Significant mediators combined explained 18.5% (13.2-25.3%) of the association with total brain volume and 32.9% (95% CI: 22.3-45.7%) of the association with grey matter volume. The percentage (95% CI) of the association between natural environment and total brain volume explained by significant mediators combined was 20.6% (14.7-28.1%)). CONCLUSIONS: Higher coverage percentage of greenspace and environment may benefit brain health by promoting healthy lifestyle and improving biomarkers including vitamin D and red blood cell indices.

The production of biogas from microalgae has gained attention due to their rapid growth, CO2 sequestration, and minimal land use. This study uses life cycle assessment to assess the environmental impacts of biogas production from wastewater-grown microalgae through anaerobic digestion within an optimized microalgae-based system. Using SimaPro® 9 software, 3 scenarios were modeled considering the ReCiPe v1.13 midpoint and endpoint methods for environmental impact assessment in different categories. In the baseline scenario (S1), a hypothetical system for biogas production was considered, consisting of a high rate algal pond (HRAP), a settling, an anaerobic digester, and a biogas upgrading unit. The second scenario (S2) included strategies to enhance biogas yield, namely co-digestion and thermal pre-treatment. The third scenario (S3), besides considering the strategies of S2, proposed the biogas upgrading in the HRAP and the digestate recovery as a biofertilizer. After normalization, human carcinogenic toxicity was the most positively affected category due to water use in the cultivation step, accounted as avoided product. However, this category was also the most negatively affected by the impacts of the digester heating energy. Anaerobic digestion was the most impactful step, constituting on average 60.37% of total impacts. Scenario S3 performed better environmentally, primarily due to the integration of biogas upgrading within the cultivation reactor and digestate use as a biofertilizer. Sensitivity analysis highlighted methane yield's importance, showing potential for an 11.28% reduction in ionizing radiation impacts with a 10% increase. Comparing S3 biogas with natural gas, the resource scarcity impact was reduced sixfold, but the human health impact was 23 times higher in S3.

As pescadoras artesanais do litoral de Pernambuco enfrentam os impactos das indústrias, do derramamento de petróleo e da pandemia de covid-19, conformando uma sindemia que agrava as vulnerabilidades socioe-conômicas, ambientais e sanitárias. Objetivou-se demonstrar que estratégias de comunicação e divulgação científica, como a cartilha "Saúde das mulheres das águas" e o documentário O mar que habita em mim, são importantes por promoverem a democratização do conhecimento. Trata-se de pesquisa-ação do tipo etnográfica para identificar aspectos do trabalho e da vida. Participaram 34 pescadoras, mediante grupos focais, oficina de fluxograma laboral, vivência do trabalho da pesca, análise e produção de estratégias. Esses materiais demonstram a relação saúde doença no trabalho da pesca enfatizando narrativas sobre deter-minação social da saúde. As estratégias comunicativas provocaram interesse da sociedade, promoveram debate e contribuíram para a consciência de profissionais/gestores de saúde sobre os povos das águas e as situações nos territórios.
Artisanal fisherwomen of Pernambuco face the impacts of the industries, of an oil spill and of the covid-19 pandemic, forming a syndemic that aggravates socioeconomic, environmental and health vulnerabilities. The objective was to demonstrate that scientific communication and dissemination strategies, such as the booklet "Saúde das mulheres das águas" and the documentary O mar que habita em mim, promote knowledge. This is an ethnographic type of action research to identify aspects of work and life. A total of 34 artisanal fisherwomen participated, in focus groups, labor flowchart workshop, experience of fishing work, analysis and production of strategies. These materials demonstrate the health disease relationship in fishing work, emphasizing the narratives of the fisherwomen about the social determination of their health. The communicative strategies provoked society's interests, promoted the debate and contributed to the awareness of professionals and health managers about the health of water's people and situations in the territories.
Pescadoras artesanales de pernambucano enfrentan impactos de industrias, derrame de petróleo y la pandemia de covid-19, formando una sindemia que agrava vulnerabilidades socioeconómicas, ambientales y de salud. El objetivo fue demostrar que las estrategias de comunicación y divulgación científica, como el folleto "'Salud das mujeres das aguas" y el documentario El mar que habita en mí, democratizan el conocimiento. Tiene abordaje de investigación-acción, etnográfica, para identificar aspectos del trabajo y la vida. Participaron 34 pescadoras en grupos focales, taller del flujo de trabajo, vivencia del trabajo en la pesca, análisis y elaboración de estrategias. Estos materiales demuestran la relación salud enfermedad en el trabajo pesquero, enfatizando narrativas sobre la determinación social de la salud. Las estrategias comu-nicativas despertaron el interés de la sociedad, promovieron el debate y contribuyeron a la sensibilización de los profesionales/gestores de la salud sobre los pueblos de las aguas y las situaciones de los territorios.

The film "Safe" (1995), directed by Todd Haynes, tells the story of Carol White, an upper-middle-class housewife in Los Angeles, who begins to suffer from a mysterious allergy to the fruits of "modernity" (ultra-processed foods, synthetic products and pollution). Despite being made decades ago, the film is current in criticizing contemporary society, exploring the disconnection and existential void in environmental crises. The review delves into the dilemmas suffered by the character who, despite living in a wealthy environment, feels alienated and seeks refuge in a group that offers a pseudoscientific solution to her illness. The film positions itself as a critique of consumer society and the consequences of neoliberal policies, questioning the effectiveness of superficial solutions to deep, systemic problems.

BACKGROUND: According to social-ecological models, the built and natural environment has the potential to facilitate or hinder physical activity (PA). While this potential is well researched in urban areas, a current systematic review of how the built and natural environment is related to PA in rural areas is lacking. METHODS: We searched five databases and included studies for adults (18-65 years) living in rural areas. We included quantitative studies investigating the association between any self-reported or objectively measured characteristic of the built or natural environment and any type of self-reported or objectively measured PA, and qualitative studies that reported on features of the built or natural environment perceived as barriers to or facilitators of PA by the participants. Screening for eligibility and quality assessment (using the Standard Quality Assessment Criteria for Evaluating Primary Research Papers from a Variety of Fields) were done in duplicate. We used a narrative approach to synthesize the results. RESULTS: Of 2432 non-duplicate records, 51 quantitative and 19 qualitative studies were included. Convincing positive relationships were found between the availability and accessibility of places for exercise and recreation and leisure-time PA as well as between the overall environment and leisure-time PA. Possible positive associations were found between the overall environment and total and transport-related PA, between greenness/natural environment and total PA, between cycling infrastructure and aesthetics and MVPA, and between pedestrian infrastructure and total walking. A possible negative relationship was found between safety and security and total walking. Qualitative studies complemented several environmental facilitators (facilities for exercise and recreation, sidewalks or streets with low traffic, attractive natural environment) and barriers (lack of facilities and destinations, lack of sidewalks, speeding traffic and high traffic volumes, lack of street lighting). CONCLUSIONS: Research investigating the relationship between the built and natural environment and PA behaviors of adults living in rural areas is still limited and there is a need for more high-quality and longitudinal studies. However, our most positive findings indicate that investing in places for exercise and recreation, a safe infrastructure for active transport, and nature-based activities are possible strategies that should be considered to address low levels of PA in rural adults. BACKGROUND: The health-care industry is a substantial contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions, yet the specific environmental impact of radiotherapy, a cornerstone of cancer treatment, remains under-explored. We aimed to quantify the emissions associated with the delivery of radiotherapy in the USA and propose a framework for reducing the environmental impact of oncology care. METHODS: In this multi-institutional retrospective analysis and simulation study, we conducted a lifecycle assessment of external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) for ten anatomical disease sites, adhering to the International Organization for Standardization's standards ISO 14040 and ISO 14044. We analysed retrospective data from Jan 1, 2017, to Oct 1, 2023, encompassing patient and staff travel, medical supplies, and equipment and building energy use associated with the use of EBRT at four academic institutions in the USA. The primary objective was to measure the environmental impacts across ten categories: greenhouse gases (expressed as kg of carbon dioxide equivalents [CO2e]), ozone depletion, smog formation, acidification, eutrophication, carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic potential, respiratory effects, fossil fuel depletion, and ecotoxicity. Human health effects secondary to these environmental impacts were also estimated as disability-adjusted life years. We also assessed the potential benefits of hypofractionated regimens for breast and genitourinary (ie, prostate and bladder) cancers on US greenhouse gas emissions using an analytic model based on the 2014 US National Cancer Database for fractionation patterns and patient commute distances. FINDINGS: We estimated that the mean greenhouse gas emissions associated with a standard 25-fraction EBRT course were 4310 kg CO2e (SD 2910), which corresponded to 0·0035 disability-adjusted life years per treatment course. Transit and building energy usage accounted for 25·73% (1110 kg CO2e) and 73·95% of (3190 kg CO2e) of total greenhouse gas emissions, respectively, whereas supplies contributed only 0·32% (14 kg CO2e). Across the other environmental impact categories, most of the environmental impact also stemmed from patient transit and energy use within facilities, with little environmental impact contributed by supplies used. Hypofractionated treatment simulations suggested a substantial reduction in greenhouse gas emissions-by up to 42% for breast and 77% for genitourinary cancer-and environmental impacts more broadly. INTERPRETATION: This comprehensive lifecycle assessment of EBRT delineates the environmental and secondary health impacts of radiotherapy, and underscores the urgent need for sustainable practices in oncology. The findings serve as a reference for future decarbonisation efforts in cancer care and show the potential environmental benefits of modifying treatment protocols (when clinical equipoise exists). They also highlight strategic opportunities to mitigate the ecological footprint in an era of escalating climate change and increasing cancer prevalence. FUNDING: Mount Zion Health Fund.

BACKGROUND: Echinococcosis is a natural focal, highly prevalent disease in China. Factors influencing the spread of echinococcosis are not only related to personal exposure but also closely related to the environment itself. The purpose of this study was to explore the influence of environmental factors on the prevalence of human echinococcosis and to provide a reference for prevention and control of echinococcosis in the future. METHODS: Data were collected from 370 endemic counties in China in 2018. By downloading Modis, DEM and other remote-sensing images in 2018. Data on environmental factors, i.e., elevation, land surface temperature (LST) and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) were collected. Rank correlation analysis was conducted between each environmental factor and the prevalence of echinococcosis at the county level. Negative binomial regression was used to analyze the impact of environmental factors on the prevalence of human echinococcosis at the county level. RESULTS: According to rank correlation analysis, the prevalence of human echinococcosis in each county was positively correlated with elevation, negatively correlated with LST, and negatively correlated with NDVI in May, June and July. Negative binomial regression showed that the prevalence of human echinococcosis was negatively correlated with annual LST and summer NDVI, and positively correlated with average elevation and dog infection rate. The prevalence of human cystic echinococcosis was inversely correlated with the annual average LST, and positively correlated with both the average elevation and the prevalence rate of domestic animals. The prevalence of human alveolar echinococcosis was positively correlated with both NDVI in autumn and average elevation, and negatively correlated with NDVI in winter. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of echinococcosis in the population is affected by environmental factors. Environmental risk assessment and prediction can be conducted in order to rationally allocate health resources and improve both prevention and control efficiency of echinococcosis.

The origin of biological rhythms goes back to the very beginning of life. They are observed in the animal and plant world at all levels of organization, from cells to ecosystems. As early as the 18th century, plant scientists were the first to explain the relationship between flowering cycles and environmental cycles, emphasizing the importance of daily light-dark cycles and the seasons. Our temporal structure is controlled by external and internal rhythmic signals. Light is the main synchronizer of the circadian system, as daily exposure to light entrains our clock over 24 hours, the endogenous period of the circadian system being close to, but not exactly, 24 hours. In 1960, a seminal scientific meeting, the Cold Spring Harbor Symposium on Biological Rhythms, brought together all the biological rhythms scientists of the time, a number of whom are considered the founders of modern chronobiology. All aspects of biological rhythms were addressed, from the properties of circadian rhythms to their practical and ecological aspects. Birth of chronobiology dates from this period, with the definition of its vocabulary and specificities in metabolism, photoperiodism, animal physiology, etc. At around the same time, and right up to the present day, research has focused on melatonin, the circadian neurohormone of the pineal gland, with data on its pattern, metabolism, control by light and clinical applications. However, light has a double face, as it has positive effects as a circadian clock entraining agent, but also deleterious effects, as it can lead to chronodisruption when exposed chronically at night, which can increase the risk of cancer and other diseases. Finally, research over the past few decades has unraveled the anatomical location of circadian clocks and their cellular and molecular mechanisms. This recent research has in turn allowed us to explain how circadian rhythms control physiology and health.

For insects that exhibit wing polyphenic development, abiotic and biotic signals dictate the adult wing morphology of the insect in an adaptive manner such that in stressful environments the formation of a flight-capable morph is favored and in low-stress environments, a flightless morph is favored. While there is a relatively large amount known about the environmental cues that dictate morph formation in wing polyphenic hemipterans like planthoppers and aphids, whether those cues dictate the same morphs in non-hemipteran (i.e., cricket) wing polyphenic species has not been explicitly investigated. To experimentally test the generality of environmental cue determination of wing polyphenism across taxa with diverse life histories, in this study, we tested the importance of food quantity, parasitic infection, and tactile cues on wing morph determination in the wing polyphenic sand field cricket, Gryllus firmus. Our results also show that certain stress cues, such as severe diet quantity limitation and parasitic infection, actually led to an increase in the production of flightless morph. Based on these findings, our results suggest that physiological and genetic constraints are important to an organism's ability to respond to environmental variation in an adaptive manner beyond simple life history trade-offs.

Recycling aluminium in a rotary furnace with salt-fluxes allows recovering valuable alloys from hard-to-recycle waste/side-streams such as packaging, dross and incinerator bottom ash. However, this recycling route generates large amounts of salt-slag/salt-cake hazardous wastes which can pose critical environmental risks if landfilled. To tackle this issue, the metallurgical industry has developed processes to valorise the salt-slag residues into recyclable salts and aluminium concentrates, while producing by-products such as ammonium sulphate and non-metallic compounds (NMCs), with applications in the construction or chemical industries. This study aims to assess through LCA the environmental impacts of recycling aluminium in rotary furnaces for both salt-slag management routes: valorisation or landfill. It was found that this recycling process brings forth considerable net environmental profits, which increase for all the considered impact categories if the salt-slag is valorised. The main benefits arise from the production of secondary cast aluminium alloys, which is not unexpected due to the high energy intensity of aluminium primary production. However, the LCA results also identify other hotspots which play a significant role, and which should be considered for the optimisation of the process based on its environmental performance, such as the production of by-products, the consumption of energy/fuels and the avoidance of landfilling waste. Additionally, the assessment shows that the indicators for mineral resource scarcity, human carcinogenic toxicity and terrestrial ecotoxicity are particularly benefited by the salt-slag valorisation. Finally, a sensitivity analysis illustrates the criticality of the metal yield assumptions when calculating the global warming potential of aluminium recycling routes.

Given the rise in robotic surgery, and parallel movement towards net zero carbon, sustainable healthcare systems, it is important that the environmental impact of robotic approaches is minimised. The majority of greenhouse gas emissions associated with robotic surgery have previously been associated with single-use items. Whilst switching from single-use products to hybrid equivalents (predominantly reusable, with a small single-use component) has previously been found to reduce the environmental impact of a range of products used for laparoscopic surgery, the generalisability of this to robotic surgery has not previously been demonstrated. In this life cycle assessment, use of hybrid 5 mm ports compatible with emerging robotic systems (143 g CO2e) was found to reduce the carbon footprint by 83% compared with using single-use equivalents (816 g CO2e), accompanied by reductions in fifteen out of eighteen midpoint environmental impact categories. For endpoint categories, there was an 81% reduction in impact on human health and species loss, and 82% reductions in resource depletion associated with using hybrid robotic 5 mm ports. Whilst the carbon footprint of 5 mm hybrid ports compatible with emerging robotic equipment was 70% higher than previous estimates of ports appropriate for conventional laparoscopic approaches, the six-fold reductions seen with hybrids in this analysis point to the generalisability of the finding that reusable or hybrid products have a lower carbon footprint when compared with single-use equivalents. Surgeons, procurement teams, and policy makers should encourage innovation towards clinically safe and effective robotic instruments with maximal reusable components.

The world population is facing one of the greatest threats to the survival of all species. Climate change is affecting people's health and represents a challenge for the Nursing professionals who are called to work in transdisciplinary teams to evaluate the impact of this phenomenon on human health, to promote healthy environments, to mitigate and adapt the health sector, as well as its impact of the population affected by extreme weather events.
