Focusing on the syndrome/pattern differentiation to determine treatment, the approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of acupuncture and moxibustion for adenomyosis are explored by identifying the etiology, location, nature and development of disease. The syndromes/patterns of adenomyosis are differentiated in view of both zangfu and meridian theories. The treatment is delivered complying with the menstrual cycle and the basic rule of treatment, "treating the symptoms in the acute stage, while the root causes in the recovery stage". During menstrual period, stopping pain and eliminating stasis are dominant; while during the other days of menstrual cycle, regulating zangfu dysfunction (excess or deficiency) is emphasized. In general, the functions of the thoroughfare vessel and the conception vessel should be specially considered and adjusted, and the principles of treatment include strengthening the spleen, regulating the kidney and soothing the liver. Acupoints are selected mainly from the spleen meridian of foot-taiyin, the kidney meridian of foot-shaoyin and the conception vessel. Ciliao (BL 32), Shiqizhui (EX-B 8), Zigong (EX-CA 1), Diji (SP 8) and four-gate points (bilateral Hegu [LI 4] and Taichong [LR 3]) are used in menstrual period; Zusanli (ST 36), Sanyinjiao (SP 6) and Taixi (KI 3) in postmenstrual phase; Guanyuan (CV 4), Luanchao (Ovary, Extra) and Qihai (CV 6) in intermenstrual phase; while, Guanyuan (CV 4), Qihai (CV 6) and Shenque (CV 8), combined with Gongsun (SP 4), Neiguan (PC 6) and Jianshi (PC 5) in premenstrual phase. According to the dynamic development of patient's conditions, the reinforcing or reducing techniques of acupuncture and moxibustion are feasibly applied in treatment of adenomyosis.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) meridian is the key theoretical guidance of prescription against tumor in clinical practice. However, there is no scientific and systematic verification of therapeutic action of herbs under meridians context. Several studies have determined the Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) phytochemicals for intrinsic attribute or meridians classification based on artificial intelligence (AI) tools. However, it is challenging to represent the complex molecular structures with large heterogeneity through the current technologies. In addition, the multiple correspondence between herbs and meridians has not been paid much attention. AIM OF THE STUDY: We aim to develop an AI framework to classify multi-target meridians through the topological structure of phytochemicals. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 354 anti-cancer herbs, their corresponding TCM meridians and 5471 ingredient compounds were collected from public databases of CancerHSP, ETCM, and Hit 2.0. The statistical analysis of herbal and compound datasets, clustering analysis of the associated cancers, and correlational analysis of meridian tropism were preliminary conducted. Then a deep learning (DL) hybrid model named GRMC consisting of graph convolutional network (GCN) and recurrent neural network (RNN) was employed to generate the meridian multi-label sequences based on molecular graph. RESULTS: The curing herbs against tumors have tight relationships to lung, liver, stomach, and spleen meridians. These herbs behave different properties in curing certain cancer. Certain cancer types have co-occurrence such as ovarian, bladder and cervical cancer. Compounds have multitarget meridians with characteristics of higher-order correlations. Compared with the other state-of-the-art algorithms on the datasets and previous methods dealing with conventional fixed fingerprints of herbal compounds, the proposed GRMC has superior overall performance on testing dataset with the one error of 0.183, hamming loss of 0.112, mean averaged accuracy (MAA) of 0.855, mean averaged precision (MAP) of 0.891, mean averaged recall (MAR) of 0.812, and mean averaged F1 score (MAF) of 0.849. CONCLUSIONS: The proposed method can predict multi-targeted meridians through neural graph features in herbal compounds and outperforms several comparison methods. It could provide a basis for understanding the molecular scientific evidence of TCM meridians.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical efficacy of electrophysiological appropriateness technique (EAT) therapy based on the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) meridian theory in managing postoperative pain after urethral reconstruction surgery. METHODS: Using the real-world study approach, we enrolled 61 male patients undergoing urethral reconstruction and divided them into a control group (n = 30) and an observation group (n = 31), the former receiving patient-controlled intravenous analgesia (PCIA), while the latter PCIA plus EAT at 4 pairs of acupoints (Hegu, Neiguan, Zusanli and Sanyinjiao bilaterally) and the Ashi point, with 100 mg tramadol hydrochloride given orally as remedial analgesia in both groups in case of postoperative Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) score ≥4. We compared the VAS scores at 4, 12, 24 and 48 hours postoperatively, the dose of cumulative fentanyl used at 48 hours, the number of cases needing remedial analgesia, the time to first flatus and the incidence of adverse reactions between the two groups of patients. RESULTS: The VAS scores were markedly lower in the observation than in the control group at 4, 12, 24 and 48 hours after surgery (P < 0.05), with statistically significant differences in time-dependent effect and interactive effect (P < 0.05). Significant reduction was observed in the doses of cumulative fentanyl (P < 0.05) and remedial tramadol analgesia (P < 0.05), time to first flatus (P < 0.05), and incidence of adverse reactions (P < 0.05) in the observation group in comparison with the controls. CONCLUSION: Electrophysiological therapy based on the TCM meridian theory can safely and effectively alleviate postoperative pain after urethral reconstruction, reduce opioid consumption, and decrease adverse events.

RESUMO

Benign prostatic hyperplasia is caused by kidney deficiency and impaired qi transformation of the urinary bladder and is manifested by the stagnation of essence chamber. Based on jingjin (muscle region of meridian, sinew/fascia) theory and taking the visceral membrane as the principal, acupuncture is delivered at sinew/fascia to promote qi circulation, resolve stasis and open the orifice. Guided by CT, the needle is inserted at Zhongji (CV 3), the front-mu point of the urinary bladder, and then goes to the prostatic capsule, meaning "the disease of zang organ is treated by needling the front-mu point". In treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia, this acupuncture therapy stimulates the different layers of fascia, by which, the defensive qi on the exterior is regulated and "essence orifice" in the interior is adjusted so that the urination can be promoted.

BACKGROUND: Cancer pain, a common complication of this disease, has been widely treated by electroacupuncture in recent years. However, there are numerous treatment parameters that are not conducive to clinical translation applications. This study aims to summarize the stimulation parameters commonly used in electroacupuncture treating cancer pain by data mining and visualization techniques to provide a basis for the future acupuncture technology transformation and selection of optimal stimulation parameters. METHODS: Nine databases, including Pubmed, Cochrane Library, Embase, Web of Science, OVID, China National Knowledge Infrastructure Database, China Biology Medicine disk, China Science and Technology Journal Database, and Wanfang Database, were searched for clinical studies on electroacupuncture treatment cancer pain published between January 2012 and September 2022. A database was established using Microsoft Excel 2020 and analyzed with SPSS Modeler 18.1 software and SPSS statistics 26.0 software. RESULTS: Twenty-four articles were included according to the established criteria. The most used electroacupuncture stimulation parameters were a dilatational wave, the current frequency of 2/100 Hz, stimulation duration of 30 minutes per treatment, and frequency of treatment once a day. Fifty-eight acupoints were mentioned, and the total frequency of acupoints involved was 156 times. The most used ones include Zusanli (ST36), Sanyinjiao (SP06), Hegu (LI04), Neiguan (PC06), Quchi (LI11), Taichong (LR03), Ashi point, Jiaji point, and those most generally used acupoints that are closely arranged on the Stomach Channel of Foot Yangming and the Spleen Channel of Foot Taiyin. The association analysis of acupoints revealed that the most supported acupoint pair was Sanyinjiao (SP06) and Zusanli (ST36). Cluster analysis demonstrated 3 groups, 1 for obligatory acupoints, 1 for Ashi point, and the third for Jiaji point. CONCLUSIONS: A dilatational wave, the current frequency of 2/100 Hz, 30-minute stimulation, and acupoints of the Stomach Channel of Foot Yangming and the Spleen Channel of Foot Taiyin selection are frequently used in electroacupuncture for treating cancer pain. Due to the limitations of this study, further research and more standardized, multi-center, large-sample clinical trials can be carried out to guide optimizing acupuncture treatment schemes and promote the formation of TCM-characteristic technologies for cancer pain.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of holographic meridian scraping therapy on patients with knee osteoarthritis (KOA) and its impact on serum IL-1ß and TNF-α levels. Methods: A prospective study was conducted, enrolling seventy KOA patients admitted to the Hebei Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine between August 2021 and April 2022. The patients were divided into two groups using the random number table method: control group (n = 35) and treatment group (n = 35). The control group received oral celecoxib capsules (100 mg, twice daily), while the treatment group received an additional daily holographic meridian scraping session (20 minutes/day). Throughout the two-week study, the researchers continuously monitored the visual analogue scale (VAS) score, the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index (WOMAC) score, and the changes in serum IL-1ß and TNF-α expression. Results: The treatment group demonstrated significantly better overall efficiency and efficacy compared to the control group (P < .05). Both groups exhibited decreased VAS and WOMAC scores after treatment in comparison to pre-treatment levels (P < .05), with the treatment group showing lower scores than the control group after treatment (P < .05). Furthermore, serum TNF-α and IL-1ß levels in both groups decreased after treatment compared to pre-treatment levels within the same group (P < .05). The treatment group had significantly lower serum TNF-α and IL-1ß levels than the control group after treatment (P < .05). Conclusions: Combining holographic meridian scraping therapy with celecoxib effectively treats KOA and significantly improves patient conditions, along with reductions in serum TNF-α and IL-1ß levels.

PURPOSE: To compare posterior chamber phakic intraocular lens (Implantable Collamer Lens [STAAR Surgical]) (ICL) plus modified steep meridian corneal relaxing incision (MS-CRI) to toric posterior chamber phakic intraocular lens (Toric Implantable Collamer Lens [STAAR Surgical]) (TICL) implantation for the correction of moderate to high astigmatism. METHODS: In this prospective, randomized clinical trial, patients with myopia who had moderate to high astigmatism (200 eyes) were enrolled and divided into TICL (n = 100) and MSCRI (n = 100) groups. All patients underwent examinations for uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), and subjective refraction before surgery and at the 1- and 6-month follow-up visits. Vector astigmatism analysis was evaluated using the Alpins method. RESULTS: The mean UDVA and CDVA demonstrated significant improvement after surgery in both groups. During the 6-month follow-up, the MS-CRI group showed a slight regression tendency (P < .001) and the TICL group was stable for the astigmatism correction (P = .510). At 6 months postoperatively, the mean magnitudes of the surgically induced astigmatism were 1.46 ± 0.53 and 1.10 ± 0.48 diopters (P < .001). The correction index of the TICL group was closer to 1 compared to that of the MS-CRI group (0.95 vs 0.76). Approximately 99% of eyes in the TICL group had angle of error within ±15°, whereas 89% eyes in the MS-CRI group were within that range. A significant relationship between the magnitudes of target induced astigmatism and correction index was noted in the MS-CRI group (P < .001), but not in the TICL group (P = .592). CONCLUSIONS: TICL implantation could achieve better visual outcomes for correcting moderate to high astigmatism compared to ICL implantation plus MS-CRI. [J Refract Surg. 2023;39(8):539-545.].

OBJECTIVE: To observe the meridian-acupoint reactions of foot three yin meridians in primary dysmenorrhea(PD) and secondary dysmenorrhea(SD) patients, so as to summarize the rules of meridian-acupoint reaction and acupoints selection. METHODS: Thirty-five patients with PD (PD group), 34 patients with SD (SD group) and 35 healthy subjects (healthy group) were recruited. The compression method was used to examine the lower leg segment of the foot three yin meridians. Positive reactions(palpable skin changes, including cords, nodules, depressions) and tenderness of meridians and acupoints were recorded. The visual analogue scale (VAS) was used to evaluate the tenderness severity of acupoints. RESULTS: Compared with the healthy group, the probability of positive reactions and tenderness in foot three yin meridians were higher in PD and SD groups (P<0.01,P<0.05). Compared with the PD group, the probability of positive reactions in Spleen and Liver Meridians were higher in the SD group, with higher probability of tenderness in Liver Meridian(P<0.05). The probability of positive reactions and tenderness in the Spleen Meridian of PD and SD groups was significantly higher than that in the Kidney Meridian (P<0.01), while the probability of tenderness in the Spleen Meridian of the PD group was significantly higher than that in the Liver Meridian (P<0.05). Positive reactions and tenderness were concentrated at Yinlingquan (SP9), Diji (SP8) and Sanyinjiao (SP6) of Spleen Meridian and Xiguan (LR7) and Ligou (LR5) in Liver Meridian of PD and SD groups. In comparison with the PD group, the probability of positive reactions, tenderness and VAS score of SP8 and LR5 of the SD group were higher (P<0.05, P<0.01). CONCLUSION: The positive reaction occurs most frequently in the Spleen Meridian, followed by the Liver Meridian, and least frequently in the Kidney Meridian. The acupoints with positive reaction are different between PD and SD, which suggests that the Spleen Meridian acupoints should be the main acupoints when treating the two kinds of dysmenorrhea, and acupoints should also be selected according to the meridian and acupoint examination results.

BACKGROUND: Enhanced recovery after surgery programs are widely known as a far-reaching approach to help patients with surgeries recover rapidly by giving optimized care. However, especially in the spine medicinal domain, relevant studies are scarce. In order to manage proper recovery after surgery, practitioners need to take a comprehensive look at the suppression of pain, strategies for improving the results of surgery, improving the quality of life, and mental support of patients. To this end, a recovery-enhancing program through integrated medical technology which covers both conventional and Korean medicine is highly required. We want to develop an integrated medical program that covers a wide range of medicinal domains for the early recovery of patients after spinal surgery. The aim of the present study is to check out which thermal stimulation with meridian points are more effective than others to enhance recovery after spinal surgery. METHODS: The following online databases will be retrieved in the present study: PubMed; Scopus; the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials; Ovid MEDLINE; Ovid EMBASE; Chinese Biomedical Literature Database; China National Knowledge Infrastructure; and Chinese Scientific Journal Database (VIP database). We will independently classify articles and will encapsulate characteristics of the study components. Primary outcomes will be categorized into visual analog scale, Tolerance to liquid and solid diet, postoperative hospitalization period, and quality of life. Secondary outcomes will be analyzed based on the study findings. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: The results of this study will be submitted to a peer-reviewed journal for publication. Furthermore, the outcomes of this study would afford the documentation of whether thermal stimulation on meridian points can be effective for enhanced recovery after spine surgery.

Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) has a long history and abundant experience in external therapy, which marks human wisdom. In the early history of human, people found that fumigation, coating, and sticking of some tree branches and herb stems can help alleviate scabies and remove parasites in productive labor, which indicates the emergence of external therapy. Pathogen usually enters the body through the surface, so external therapy can be used to treat the disease. External therapy is among the major characteristic of surgery of TCM. As one of the external therapies in TCM, external application to acupoints smooths the zang-fu organs through meridians and collaterals, thereby harmonizing yin and yang. This therapy emerged in the early society, formed the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, improved in the Song and Ming dynasties, and matured in the Qing dynasty. With the efforts of experts in history, it has had a mature theory. According to modern research, it can avoid the first-pass effect of liver and the gastrointestinal irritation and improve the bioavailability of Chinese medicine. Based on the effect of Chinese medicine and the theory of meridian and collateral, it can stimulate the acupoints, exert regulatory effect on acupoints, and give full play to the efficacy of TCM and the interaction of the two. Thereby, it can regulate qi and blood and balance yin and yang, thus being widely used in the treatment of diseases. In this paper, the use of external application to acupoints, the effect on skin immunity, the regulation of neuro-inflammatory mechanism, the relationship between acupoint application and human circulation network, and the development of its dosage form were summarized through literature review. On this basis, this study is expected to lay a foundation for further research.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the prediction of postoperative anatomical lens position (ALP) using intraoperative spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) lens anatomy metrics in patients who underwent femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery. METHODS: Intraoperative SD-OCT (Catalys; Johnson & Johnson Vision) and postoperative optical biometry (IOLMaster 700; Carl Zeiss Meditec AG) were used to assess anterior segment landmarks, including lens thickness, lens volume, anterior chamber depth, lens meridian position (LMP), and measured ALP. LMP was defined as the distance from the corneal epithelium to the lens equator, and ALP was defined as the distance from the corneal epithelium to the IOL surface. Eyes were divided into groups according to axial length (> 22.5 mm, 22.5 to 24.5 mm, and > 24.5 mm) and IOL type (Tecnis ZCB00 [Johnson & Johnson Vision]; AcrySof SN-60WF [Alcon Laboratories, Inc], or enVista MX60E [Bausch & Lomb]) to further analyze the correlation between LMP and ALP. Theoretical effective lens position was back-calculated using a specific formula. Primary outcome was correlation between postoperative measured ALP and LMP. RESULTS: A total of 97 eyes were included in this study. Linear regression analysis displayed a statistically significant correlation between intraoperative LMP and postoperative ALP (R2 = 0.522; P < .01). No statistically significant correlation was observed between LMP and lens thickness (R2 = 0.039; P = .06) or between ALP and lens thickness (R2 = 0.02; P = .992). The greatest predictor for ALP was LMP (ß = 0.766, P < .001; R2 = 0.523). CONCLUSIONS: Intraoperative SD-OCT-measured LMP correlated better than anterior chamber depth and axial length to postoperative ALP. Further studies are necessary to analyze the impact of preoperative or intraoperative LMP measurements on postoperative refractive outcomes. [J Refract Surg. 2023;39(3):165-170.].

The paper presents professor WU Han-qing's experience in treatment of lumbar disc herniation (LDH) with "sinew-bone three needling technique" of Chinese medicine. Based on the theory of meridian sinew, the points are located by "three-pass method" in terms of the distribution of meridian sinew and syndrome/pattern differentiation. The cord-like muscles and adhesion are relieved by relaxing technique to work directly on the affected sites and alleviate the local compression to the nerve root. The needle technique is operated flexibly according to the affected regions involved, due to which, the needling sensation is increased while the safety ensured. As a result, the meridian qi is enhanced, the mind and qi circulation is regulated; and the clinical effect is improved.

Acpuncture as a branch of traditional Chinese medicine is popular in China. It can regulate the running of meridian qi to stimulate the ocular nerve activity and increase blood supply. Periocular acupuncture treatment is very frequent, but it can lead to safety hazards that cannot be ignored. For instance, ocular trauma may develop if done improperly, resulting in impaired vision and even blindness. We report a rare case of perforating ocular injury caused by acupuncture.

OBJECTIVE: To explore effective acupoints and combinations for the treatment of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) METHODS: Clinical controlled trials and randomized controlled trials of acupuncture for CIPN were sourced from PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Chinese databases, including the Wanfang database, VIP Journals database, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure database. The quality of eligible research was evaluated based on CONSORT and STRICTA statements. The common acupoints, meridians, and acupoint combinations were determined from acupuncture prescriptions reporting positive effects and were analyzed using SPSS 23.0 and SPSS Modeler 14.1. Finally, a complex network was constructed using Cytoscape 3.8.2 to explore the core acupoints. RESULTS: The quality of 24 clinical trials was evaluated, and 20 acupuncture prescriptions that reported positive outcomes were included in subsequent data mining analysis. The most frequently used acupoints are ST36, LI11, LI4, LR3, and SP6. Meanwhile, they are also the core acupoints in acupuncture prescriptions according to the complex network with 28 nodes and 177 edges. The most commonly used meridians were the large intestine, stomach, and spleen. Acupoint combinations of LI11 and ST36, SP6 and ST36 were frequently used. CONCLUSION: Our study provides a reference for the selection of effective acupoints for CIPN treatment and a basis for the effective use of this form of traditional Chinese medicine. Furthermore, we found limitations in the design and implementation of the available clinical research, which should be minimized in future studies.

BACKGROUND: Warm needling is a type of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), which uses burned moxa to generate warmth and exerts a therapeutic effect on human skin. Additionally, based on TCM theory, warm needling could improve deficiency-cold syndrome. Research has found that warm needling has analgesic effects as well as effects on the immune system, endocrine system, nervous system, and lower urinary tract symptoms. However, the mechanism of warm needling on the meridians is not fully understood. In modern studies, the electric characteristics of the meridians have been discovered and the combination of semiconductor and TCM theory could explain the meridian phenomena through physics. However, there is no known research exploring the relationship between thermal effect and electric property on the meridians. METHODS: A total of 30 healthy participants older than 20 years of age will be recruited for this study. The participants would first be administered acupuncture, following which the electric characteristics will be measured using the semiconductor analyzer Agilent B1500A/Agilent 4156C. The visual analog score (VAS) will also be rated. Thereafter, a burned moxa will be added to the acupuncture needles as a method for warm needling. The electric characteristics and VAS will be measured again. We will use the paired t-test and repeated measure two-way ANOVA to compare the electric characteristics and VAS before and after warm needling in each participant. OBJECTIVES: This protocol aims to explore the thermal effect on the electric characteristics of meridians in a warm needling model and provide a scientific explanation of TCM through the aspect of physics.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze and sum up clinical application regularities of Chengshan (BL57) acupoint in ancient Chinese literature. METHODS: The book Zhonghua Yidian (Collection of Chinese Medical Classic Works, 5th edition) containing 1 156 ancient medical books was used as the retrieved literature source. The key retrieval words used were BL57 acupoint related indications, prescriptions, treatment methods and taboos, followed by sorting out relevant articles and establishing a database. RESULTS: A total of 196 articles meeting our inclusion standards of the present study, involving 61 ancient books which contain 174 related terms covering 56 diseases or syndromes of internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, ophthalmology and otorhinola-ryngology, etc.. Among them, the most frequently attending disease treated by single BL57 or acupoints combination was limb meridian disorders, and the most frequently used auxiliary acupoint was Kunlun (BL60). The most frequently used auxiliary meridian was the Bladder Meridian of Foot Taiyang. In addition, a total of 71 terms involved the acupuncture and moxibustion techniques of BL57, covering 7 treatment methods. In terms of the treatment methods, the dose of moxibustion was five cones in each session, and the depth of acupuncture needle insertion was about seven fen. CONCLUSION: BL57 is widely used in various clinical departments, especially for limb meridian diseases.

Aim: This study is aimed at investigating the effect of acupuncture along meridians on pain degree and treatment of acute lumbar sprain. Methods: A total of 96 patients with acute lumbar sprain from May 2019 to March 2021 in our hospital were selected and divided into the study and control groups. The patients in the control group were administered conventional western medicine and massage therapy, while the study group underwent acupuncture along meridians based on the control group. The therapeutic effect, visual analogue scale (VAS), Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire (RMDQ), and lumbar range of motion (ROM) scores, emG inversion times, emG amplitude of the sacrospinalis muscle, and the serum TNF-α and IL-6 levels were determined. Results: The total effective rate of the study group was significantly higher than that of the control group. After treatment, the VAS, RMDQ, and ROM scores of the study group were significantly lower than those of the control group. Before the intervention, the EMG inversion times and the EMG amplitude of the spinous process muscle in the study group were not significantly different from those in the control group. After the intervention, the number and amplitude of EMG reversal in the study group were significantly higher than those in the control group. After the intervention, the serum levels of TNF-α (pg/ml) and IL-6 (pg/ml) in the study group were significantly lower than those in the control group. Conclusion. Meridian acupuncture for acute lumbar sprain can effectively improve body function, relieve pain, regulate serum inflammatory factors, and improve the overall therapeutic effect.

The primo vascular system (PVS) is of great interest to scientists in the last few years. The PVS plays a role in stem cell migration, immune function, erythropoiesis, tissue regeneration, and cancer metastasis. Discovered by Bong Han Kim in 1960, the PVS was described as a new, independent system that is distributed in the body of different animals. Since then, several cells have been discovered as important constituents of the PVS. Endothelial cells are hallmarks for the identification of the PVS, as they line the sinuses of the primo vessels and are characterized by their arrangement of rod-shaped nuclei in a parallel, broken-line fashion along the primo vessels. Immune cells as mast cells, eosinophils, neutrophils, and lymphocytes are also hallmarks for the identification of the PVS. One of the most interesting cells in the PVS are p-microcells. Primo nodes are a stem cell niche due to their p-microcells content, which express stem cell biomarkers CD133 and Oct 4. Mature erythrocytes and hematopoietic stem cells have also been observed in the PVS. Hematopoietic stem cells were observed in the PVS. Hematopoietic Stem Cells are the source of the cellular component of blood. Additionally, adrenaline and noradrenaline-producing cells, mesothelial cells, and smooth-muscle-like cells have also been described in the PVS.

The purpose of this paper is to compare the biological research carried out in North Korea with the modern outcomes in the same field, from a historical perspective. In the 1960s, the group led by Bong-Han Kim asserted the existence of a fundamental circulatory system in the human body. Their findings were introduced in five papers as well as in the newspaper Rodong Sinmun. The size of the group, the range of equipment, and their findings expanded gradually, and the final paper on blood cells would be only published one of over sixty papers reported at that time. In the five papers, some unclear and inconsistent contents were found. Meanwhile, in the 2000s, PVS (primo vascular system) researchers have published over one hundred papers to prove the existence of this novel system. Some trends have emerged in approximately sixty papers as follows: The research on the identification of the anatomical and histological characteristics has gradually expanded to encompass the system's own functioning. Also, new visual results (e.g. before and after dyeing, and its comparison with blood clots) and the exploration of possible medical applications (e.g. cancer metastasis channels or stem cells location) have been proposed. However, it is difficult to identify papers which comprehensively represented the elements claimed by Bong-Han Kim's group. In addition, papers have been published more in alternative or Oriental medicine journals than in Western biomedical journals. It seems necessary to report more existence of the system in one laboratory animal and in more influential journals.
