ABSTRACT: Excessive body weight and adiposity contribute to many adverse health concerns. The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) recognizes that the condition of excess body weight and adiposity is complex, with numerous factors warranting consideration. The ACSM published a position stand on this topic in 2001 with an update in 2009, and a consensus paper on the role of physical activity in the prevention of weight gain in 2019. This current consensus paper serves as an additional update to those prior ACSM position and consensus papers. The ACSM supports the inclusion of physical activity in medical treatments (pharmacotherapy, metabolic and bariatric surgery) of excess weight and adiposity, as deemed to be medically appropriate, and provides perspectives on physical activity within these therapies. For weight loss and prevention of weight gain, the effects may be most prevalent when physical activity is progressed in an appropriate manner to at least 150 min·wk-1 of moderate-intensity physical activity, and these benefits occur in a dose-response manner. High-intensity interval training does not appear to be superior to moderate-to-vigorous physical activity for body weight regulation, and light-intensity physical activity may also be an alternative approach provided it is of sufficient energy expenditure. Evidence does not support that any one single mode of physical activity is superior to other modes for the prevention of weight gain or weight loss, and to elicit holistic health benefits beyond the effects on body weight and adiposity, multimodal physical activity should be recommended. The interaction between energy expenditure and energy intake is complex, and the effects of exercise on the control of appetite are variable between individuals. Physical activity interventions should be inclusive and tailored for sex, self-identified gender, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, age, and developmental level. Intervention approaches can also include different forms, channels, and methods to support physical activity.

BACKGROUND: Healthy Together Victoria (HTV) was a Victorian Government initiative that sought to reduce the prevalence of overweight and obesity through targeting chronic disease risk factors including physical activity, poor diet quality, smoking, and harmful alcohol use. The intervention involved a boosted workforce of > 170 local-level staff in 12 communities; employed to deliver system activation around health and wellbeing for individuals, families and communities. A cluster randomised trial (CRT) of a systems thinking approach to obesity prevention was embedded within HTV. We present the two-year changes in overweight and obesity and associated behaviours among secondary school students across Victoria, Australia. METHODS: Twenty-three geographically bounded areas were randomised to intervention (12 communities) or comparison (11 communities). Randomly selected secondary schools within each community were invited to participate in the trial in 2014 and 2016. Students in Grade 8 (aged approximately 13-15 years) and Grade 10 (aged approximately 15-16 years) at participating schools were recruited using an opt-out approach across July-September 2014 and 2016. Primary outcomes were body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference. Secondary outcomes were physical activity, sedentary behaviour, diet quality, health-related quality of life, and depressive symptoms. Linear mixed models were fit to estimate the intervention effect adjusting for child/school characteristics. RESULTS: There were 4242 intervention children and 2999 control children in the final analysis. For boys, the two-year change showed improvement in intervention versus control for waist circumference (difference in change: - 2.5 cm; 95% confidence interval [CI]: - 4.6, - 0.5) and consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages per day (< 1 serve: 8.5 percentage points; 95% CI: 0.6, 16.5). For girls, there were no statistically significant differences between conditions. CONCLUSIONS: HTV seemed to produce favourable changes in waist circumference and sugar-sweetened beverage consumption for boys, however, no effect on BMI was observed. Although the HTV intervention was cut short, and the period between data collection points was relatively short, the changes observed in HTV contribute to the growing evidence of whole-of-community interventions targeting childhood obesity. TRIAL REGISTRATION: This trial is unregistered. The intervention itself was a policy setting delivered by government and our role was the collection of data to evaluate the effect of this natural experiment. That is, this study was not a trial from the classical point of view and we were not responsible for the intervention.

The study of dietary patterns during pregnancy may be of great importance for determining the potential risk of obesity in childhood. We assessed the prospective association between maternal adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) during pregnancy and risk of childhood overweight/obesity at 4 years. This prospective analysis involved 272 mother-child pairs from the ECLIPSES study. Maternal diet during pregnancy was assessed using a validated 45-item food-frequency questionnaire and a relative whole-pregnancy MedDiet score (rMedDiet) was calculated. The children's weight and height were measured at the age of 4. Primary outcome was childhood overweight/obesity based on age- and-sex-specific BMI z-score > 85th percentile using the WHO child growth standards. Mean maternal rMedDiet score in pregnancy was 9.8 (±standard deviation 2.3) and 25.7% of the children were overweight/obese. Significant differences in anthropometric measurements (weight, height, and BMI) were found according to sex, with higher scores for boys. After controlling for potential confounders, greater maternal adherence to rMedDiet during pregnancy was associated with a lower risk of childhood overweight/obesity, highest vs. lowest quartile (OR = 0.34, 95% CI: 0.12-0.90; p-trend 0.037). Similar trends regarding this association (per 1-point increase rMedDiet score) were observed after stratification by advanced maternal age, maternal early pregnancy BMI, education, socioeconomic status, smoking, and gestational weight gain. Our findings suggest that closer adherence to the MedDiet during pregnancy may protect against the risk of offspring overweight/obesity at 4 years. Further research is needed to explore whether associations persist across the life course.

Whole foods plant-based diets (WFPBD) show potential for preventing and addressing chronic diseases. However, concerns exist about their acceptability and feasibility. Research on firsthand WFPBD adoption experiences is limited but crucial for promoting dietary change. In a 12-week remotely delivered lifestyle modification program using an ad libitum WFPBD, twenty weight-loss seeking adults (ages 18-75) with overweight or obesity completed self-report surveys and semi-structured interviews via Zoom. The study aimed to explore: (1) experiences with WFPBD adoption; (2) factors that helped or hindered adherence; and (3) perceived salient benefits. Interviews were analyzed inductively through a conventional content analysis, and associations between variables examined with correlational analyses. Participants overall reported WFPBD adoption being a positive, new experience, with an equal number (30%) finding it easy/easier than expected as challenging. Key cited challenges included overwhelm, different eating habits in the household, and meal preparation. Key cited facilitators included adopting an incremental approach to dietary change, persisting after setbacks, and having simple go-to meals. Greater self-compassion and family support, and less sabotage from friends and family corresponded to greater dietary change (rs > 0.45, ps < .05). Participants valued accountability, structure, human support, nutrition psychoeducation and recipes in the program. Three categories emerged regarding perceived benefits of following the WFPBD: physical health benefits, improvements to eating habits, and greater perceived control/agency over health. Results indicate that future interventions should include psychological strategies alongside nutrition education to enhance self-efficacy, address household barriers, and combat feelings of overwhelm through sufficient structure, support, and meal preparation guidance. Messaging around WFPBD may benefit from discussing prevailing positive experiences with adoption, common benefits experienced, and options for an incremental approach given that feasibility and acceptability concerns may deter efforts.

Introduction: Introduction: among the epidemiological challenges facing Spanish society in the first half of the 20th century, the problem of malnutrition stood out. Although hunger and malnutrition were the most prevalent forms, overweight and obesity were beginning to emerge, particularly among the wealthier classes. In all cases, and especially in the overnutrition situation, the issue was not so much economic as one of lack of knowledge. For this reason, for the hygienists, dissemination and education in food and nutrition was fundamental. In this field, the contribution of the Catalan endocrinologist Jesús Noguer Moré (1903-1983) stands out. The aim is to analyze the work he devoted to obesity. Material and methods: bibliographic analysis of the works of Jesús Noguer Moré. Results and conclusion: he considered obesity as a pathology of multifactorial etiology with serious consequences for morbidity and mortality. It would involve everything from genetics to previous pathologies, as well as inadequate dietary and lifestyle habits. Its therapeutic approach should be based on calorie restriction and physical activity. He underlined the role of certain types of family or professional activities in promoting overweight and obesity. In terms of prevention, he emphasized the importance of culinary and gastronomic practices, while at the same time placing the responsibility for these practices on housewives. A gender discourse that led Noguer to place women as the target group for his dissemination activities and where the ideal of feminine beauty in force in the inter-war period was very much present.


Introducción: Introducción: entre los retos epidemiológicos de la sociedad española de la primera mitad del siglo XX, destacaba el problema de la malnutrición. Aunque eran el hambre y la desnutrición las formas más prevalentes, el sobrepeso y la obesidad empezaban a emerger entre las clases acomodadas. En todos los casos y, sobre todo, en el escenario de la sobrealimentación, la cuestión no era tanto económica como de falta de conocimientos. Por esta razón, para los higienistas eran fundamentales la divulgación y la educación en alimentación y nutrición. En este ámbito, destaca la aportación del endocrinólogo catalán Jesús Noguer Moré (1903-1983). El objetivo es analizar los trabajos que dedicó a la obesidad. Material y método: análisis bibliográfico de las obras de Jesús Noguer Moré. Resultados y conclusión: consideraba la obesidad una patología de etiología multifactorial con graves consecuencias para la morbimortalidad. Intervendrían desde la genética hasta patologías previas, pasando por hábitos alimentarios y de vida inadecuados. Su abordaje terapéutico debía basarse en restricciones calóricas y actividad física. Subrayaba el papel de determinados tipos de actividades familiares o profesionales en el fomento del sobrepeso y la obesidad. En materia preventiva, resaltaba la importancia de las prácticas culinarias y gastronómicas, al mismo tiempo que hacía recaer la responsabilidad de las mismas en las amas de casa, un discurso de género que llevó a Noguer a situar a las mujeres como colectivo diana de su acción divulgadora y donde estuvo muy presente el ideal de belleza femenina vigente en el periodo de entreguerras.

Introduction: Introduction: there is more and more scientific data on sweeteners but at the same time there is more dissemination of information and it is sometimes contradictory Methods: observational field study with analysis of data referring to current legislation, approvals by European Union authorities and systematic reviews. Results: the European Union has one of the best systems in the world for the evaluation, approval and authorization of sweeteners and those approved have been immersed since 2010 in a revaluation process, such as that of the other additives. Conclusions: sweeteners are a tool for the reduction and elimination of sugar at foodstuffs. The total diet is the one that must have as a whole a reduction in calories to be effective in the control and reduction of overweight and obesity.


Introducción: Introducción: cada vez existen más datos científicos sobre los edulcorantes, pero a su vez hay más diseminación de información, a veces contradictoria. Material y métodos: estudio de campo observacional con análisis de datos referidos a la legislación vigente, aprobaciones por autoridades de la Unión Europea y revisiones sistemáticas. Resultados: la Unión Europea tiene uno de los mejores sistemas a nivel mundial de evaluación, aprobación y autorización de edulcorantes y los aprobados están inmersos desde el año 2010 en un proceso de reevaluación, como el resto de aditivos. Conclusiones: los edulcorantes son una herramienta para la reducción y eliminación de azúcar en los productos alimenticios. La dieta total es la que debe tener en su conjunto una reducción de calorías para ser efectiva en el control y la reducción del sobrepeso y la obesidad.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate individual characteristics associated with participation and effectiveness of a worksite health promotion program with motivational interviewing targeting health and health behaviour among Dutch workers in low socioeconomic position. METHODS: In a production company and a hospital, 838 workers were invited for a Preventive Medical Examination and subsequent coaching with motivational interviewing up to 7 sessions within 6 months. Follow-up information was collected after 6 months. Characteristics associated with participation in coaching were assessed with logistic regression models. The effectiveness of coaching on body mass index (BMI), bodyweight, self-rated health, vigorous physical activity, smoking, alcohol intake, fruit- and vegetable consumption, work ability, and sickness absence was evaluated with linear regression models and on participation in health promotion activities with logistic regression analysis. The analyses on effectiveness were performed without and with propensity score adjustment. RESULTS: Of the 838 invited workers, 313 workers participated in the Preventive Medical Examination and follow-up data were available for 176 workers, of whom 100 workers with increased cardiovascular risk attended coaching. The majority of workers with obesity (73%), overweight (60%), and unhealthy behaviours (58%-69%) at baseline participated in motivational interviewing. Males, workers with overweight or obesity, workers at the production company, workers with insufficient vigorous physical activity, and workers with a low educational level were most likely to participate in coaching. Coaching with motivational interviewing after the Preventive Medical Examination was associated with a 4.74 times higher likelihood [95% confidence interval (CI): 1.99;11.32] to participate in health promotion activities and 10.9% (95%CI: 0.6;21.3) more persons who quit smoking compared to workers without coaching. No statistically significant effects were observed on BMI, bodyweight, health, health behaviour, work ability and sickness absence. CONCLUSIONS: The program combining a Preventive Medical Examination with follow-up coaching reached - as intended - workers with obesity or overweight, those with a low education and with unhealthy behaviours. Adding coaching with motivational interviewing to a Preventive Medical Examination contributed to higher participation in health promotion activities and an increase in smoking cessation after 6 months among workers with a lower socioeconomic position, but was not effective on other outcomes. TRIAL REGISTRATION: The study was registered retrospectively in the Netherlands Trial Register as NL8178 on 22/11/2019.

BACKGROUND: The anthroposophical philosophy is a holistic educational and lifestyle approach. Limited information exists on the health-promoting behavioral norms and obesity rates among children living anthroposophical vs. conventional lifestyles. AIMS: This study aims to compare the prevalence of childhood obesity, and parents' perceptions of their children's food environment, between anthroposophical and conventional education systems. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional analysis of the National Anthropometric Measurement Survey for first grade students in Israel, comparing anthroposophical schools with matched conventional schools. Additionally, an online survey was distributed among parents of children in both school systems, assessing children's eating norms and dietary intake. RESULTS: Overweight and obesity rates were higher among students in conventional schools (n = 205,500) compared to anthroposophical schools (n = 2247) (11.2% vs. 9.6%, and 7.8% vs. 4.8%, respectively; Pv < 0.001). Anthroposophical schools were perceived by more parents to have health-promoting curricula, health promoting teacher behavior, and health promoting social dietary norms, while their children's dietary intake was perceived as healthier both in school and in the after-school, social, and familial environment (Pv < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Children in anthroposophical education exhibited lower overweight and obesity rates, and engaged in more health-promoting behaviors. Further research is needed to explore the relationship between the anthroposophical lifestyle and childhood obesity, and to identify effective anthroposophical strategies for health promotion among children.

BACKGROUND: Weight loss through lifestyle modification can produce health benefits and may reduce cancer risk. The goal of this study was to examine the feasibility of and adherence to a 15-week telephone-based weight loss intervention in rural Ohio, an area with high rates of obesity. METHODS: This pilot 2-arm randomized controlled study was designed for rural Ohio residents who were overweight or obese. Eligible participants were 2:1 randomly assigned to either a 15-week weight loss intervention group or active control group. The weight loss intervention group received weekly telephone sessions to improve healthy diet and increase physical activity. The active control group received education brochures with information on physical activity and dietary guidelines. Feasibility was defined as at least 80% of participants completing the follow-up surveys, and acceptable adherence was defined as the percentage of participants in the weight loss group who attend ≥75% of weekly telephone sessions. RESULTS: A total of 423 individuals entered the online screening survey, 215 (50.8%) completed the survey, and 98 (45.6%) of those were eligible. Forty eligible individuals were enrolled and randomly assigned to the weight loss group (n = 27) or active control group (n = 13). The average age of the weight loss group was 49 (SD = 10) years, and 89% were female. The average age of the active control group was 51 (SD = 9) years, and 92% were female. Feasibility was demonstrated: 90% of participants completed the online follow-up surveys at 15-weeks. Among participants in the weight loss group, 22 out of 27 (81.5%) completed the 15-week intervention, the average number of sessions attended was 9.7 (64.9%). Adherence to the intervention was rated as acceptable among almost half of the group (48.1%). CONCLUSIONS: Feasibility of a 15-week telephone-based weight loss study among rural residents with overweight/obesity were determined. A future study will test this intervention for weight loss efficacy.

ISSUE ADDRESSED: Retention of weight gained during pregnancy contributes to overweight and obesity and consequent chronic disease risk. Early programs have been successful in improving diet quality, physical activity levels and reducing postnatal weight retention. However, barriers to program engagement remain. This study aimed to investigate women's healthy eating, physical activity and weight experiences and explore their views regarding digital health interventions to assist meeting their lifestyle goals. METHODS: This qualitative descriptive study utilised semi-structured interviews with women who had recently become mothers who had gestational diabetes or a body mass index above 25 kg/m2 . Themes were then identified through thematic analysis of interview transcripts. RESULTS: Nine women were interviewed (average age 33.4 ± 4.2 years). The two distinct areas of questioning resulted in two overarching topics: (i) Enablers and barriers to maintaining regular physical activity and a healthy dietary pattern; and (ii) characteristics of a postpartum program to enable meeting of diet, physical activity and weight loss goals. These topics each had their own descriptive themes and sub-themes. CONCLUSIONS: Understanding women's needs and viewpoints for a postnatal diet, physical activity and weight program allows researchers to design a program to maximise engagement and outcomes. SO WHAT?: Any further postnatal program must leverage off existing infrastructure, integrate learnings from published formative work and harnesses the impact of digital delivery. This will improve program accessibility and provide ongoing contact for sustained behaviour change through text messaging and providing digital resources in a dynamic format women can engage with in their own time.

Background: Family-based programs show considerable promise in preventing overweight and obesity in young children. However, dissemination is difficult because significant participant and staff involvement is required. This study examined the short-term efficacy of adding parental feeding content to a widely-used nutrition education curriculum for families in low-resourced communities comparing the influence of two delivery methods (in-class and online) on parents' feeding knowledge, practices, and styles. Methods: In this cluster randomized controlled trial, parents of 2- to 8-year-old children enrolled in the EFNEP (Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program) in Colorado and Washington were randomly assigned to: in-class nutrition education only, in-class nutrition education with in-class feeding content, or in-class nutrition education with online feeding content. Data from the 382 participants who completed both pretest and posttest assessments are reported in this study. Results: Multilevel analyses showed empirical support for the influence of the program on parents' feeding knowledge, practices, and styles. Online and in-class methods were equally effective in delivering feeding content in low-resourced communities. Consistent effects were seen across the two delivery methods for encouraging children to try new foods (p < 0.05), use of child-centered feeding practices (i.e., greater responsiveness, p < 0.05), child involvement in food preparation (p < 0.05), and understanding the number of presentations often necessary for child acceptance of a new food (p < 0.001). Location and language differences were seen across some constructs. Conclusions: This study demonstrates the efficacy of in-class and online approaches to feeding highlighting the program's positive effects on promoting healthy feeding behaviors for parents of children in low-resourced families. Em uma primeira análise de tendências nos estado de Mato Grosso do Sul é possível observar em relação aos marcadores do SISVAN para obesidade/excesso de peso em suas formas mais graves segundo a faixa etária, que existem tendências ao aumento em todas as situações apresentadas com exceção dos menores de 5 anos, que apresentam indícios de queda. Aliado às tendências de aumento da obesidade/excesso de peso em suas formas mais grave nas diferentes faixas etárias no estado, podemos ver nos marcadores de consumo que existe uma tendência na estabilização do consumo de feijão, que marcaria alimentação in natura e tradicional do brasileiro, e uma tendência de aumento do consumo de alimentos ultraprocessados, que são amplamente associados à obesidade e doenças crônicas na literatura (LOUZADA et al, 2021). Os dois fatores anteriormente descritos, associados aos dados de alta prevalência de inatividade física, evidentes nos dados do COVITEL (2022) de que apenas 1/3 da população adulta/idosa do Centro-Oeste é fisicamente ativa (com tendência de queda entre 2021 e 2022) vem nos trazer uma situação alarmante em relação aos principais fatores de controle para cuidado da obesidade em nosso estado (Vital Strategies Brasil, 2023). A Linha de Cuidado de Sobrepeso e Obesidade deve responder à esses desafios com pactuações coletivas para melhor resolubilidade do SUS. Consumo de Feijão faz parte do grupo "Alimentos in natura", poisnão há adição de outros aditivos ou nutrientes para seu consumo. Além disso, o feijão é marco cultural da alimentação brasileira denorte a sul no país. No esquema abaixo, ele entra na barra verde da recomendação, que deve ser consumido em maior quantidade. O consumo de alimentos ultraprocessados é um marcador que engloba todos os alimentos ultraprocessados, que tiveram consumo referido no dia anterior pelo usuário. O consumo desses alimentos está relacionado com Obesidade e DCNT. No esquema abaixo, essa classe de alimentos entra na barra marrom da recomendação, e deve ser evitado ou consumido deve ser reduzido ao mínimo possível. A seguir será descrita a evolução temporal dos marcadores de consumo feijão e ultraprocessados e do IMC para faixa etária coletados na APS nas interfaces de ações da Vigilância Alimentar e Nutricional (VAN). Todos os dados foram obtidos pelo SISVAN-Web para o território do estado do Mato Grosso do Sul segundo macrorregiões de saúde, por meio de relatórios públicos oficiais. Os relatórios públicos para marcadores de consumo e de antropometria podem ser acessados oficialmente pelo link: https://sisaps.saude.gov.br/sisvan/relatoriopublico/index. Esses relatórios foram coletados no período de maio a julho de 2023, referentes aos anos de 2015 a 2022, segundo pactuado em GT da LCSO para apresentação da situação em Comitê Intergestores Regional (CIR), Comitê Intergestores Bipartite (CIB) e para o Conselhos de Secretarias Municipais de Saúde de Mato Grosso do Sul (COSEMS - MS). As análises de tendência temporal foram realizadas por meio de regressão de Linear, com auxílio do programa Power BI (versão gratuita), dentro da sua função DAX (Data Analysis Expressions). Em suma, as prevalências crescentes de doenças crônicas e obesidade no Brasil refletem mudanças nos padrões de vida e nos hábitos alimentares, bem como desafios socioeconômicos. Lidar com esses problemas requer uma ação coordenada de governos, profissionais de saúde, indústria alimentícia e a sociedade em geral, com foco na promoção da saúde, prevenção e acesso equitativo a serviços de saúde de qualidade.

Introducción: El estudio de la morbilidad y el impacto de la enfermedad en el estilo de vida se conocen como medición de la calidad de vida. Objetivo: Evaluar el nivel de la calidad de vida de pacientes con diagnóstico de osteoartritis sintomática de rodilla. Métodos: Se realizó una investigación descriptiva, transversal, en pacientes con diagnóstico de osteoartritis sintomática de rodilla del Centro de Referencia de Enfermedades Reumáticas entre noviembre de 2017 a junio de 2020. La muestra quedó conformada por 213 pacientes, evaluados con el índice de WOMAC de calidad de vida. Resultados: En el grupo de edad de 55-64 años y discapacidad grave se obtuvo la mayor frecuencia de casos (18,3 por ciento; 39). Los pacientes con sobrepeso y discapacidad grave representaron el 28,2 por ciento (60). Predominaron los que tuvieron más de 5 años de evolución de la enfermedad y discapacidad grave (21,0 por ciento; 45). El mayor porcentaje de pacientes se presentó con deformidad de genu varo y discapacidad grave (29,6 por ciento; 63). Hubo relación entre la calidad de vida y el sexo, el índice de masa corporal y el tiempo de evolución de la enfermedad. Conclusiones: La intensidad del dolor se relaciona con un grado radiográfico avanzado, en tanto la calidad de vida con el sexo, el tiempo de evolución de la enfermedad y el índice de masa corporal(AU)


Introduction: The study of morbidity and the impact of the disease on lifestyle is known as quality of life measurement. Objective: To evaluate the level of quality of life of patients diagnosed with symptomatic osteoarthritis of the knee. Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional investigation was carried out in patients diagnosed with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis from the Reference Center for Rheumatic Diseases between November 2017-June 2020. The sample was made up of 213 patients, who were evaluated with the WOMAC index of quality of life. Results: In the age group of 55-64 years and severe disability, the highest frequency of cases was obtained (18.3percent; 39). Patients with overweight and severe disability represented 28.2percent60). Those who had more than 5 years of evolution of the disease and severe disability prevailed (21.0percent; 45). The highest percentage of patients presented with genu varus deformity and severe disability (29.6percent; 63). There was a relationship between quality of life and sex, body mass index and the time of evolution of the disease. Conclusions: The intensity of the pain is related to an advanced radiological degree, while the quality of life is related to sex, the time of evolution of the disease and the body mass index(AU)

BACKGROUND: Poor dietary habits and low levels of physical activity (PA) have a strong tendency to track from childhood into adulthood. The Mediterranean Diet (MD) is known to be extremely healthy, associated with lower BMI and a lower risk of obesity in children and adolescents. Therefore, adherence to the MD was compared between Spanish (n = 182) and German (n = 152) children aged 10 to 13 years to examine a possible more "westernized" diet in Spain with a non-Mediterranean country, that traditionally prefers a "Western diet" and to determine the association between adherence to the MD and gender, body composition, and PA levels. METHODS: In the German observational longitudinal cohort study and the Spanish cohort study, body composition and questionnaires (KIDMED, Diet Quality (IAES)) were obtained, and accelerometers (Actigraph) were applied to detect PA. RESULTS: Girls had higher BMI-standard deviation score (SDS) than boys and Spanish girls were less active than boys. Differences were detected in MD habits, such as favorable fruit-, vegetables-, fish-intakes, and dairy products in Spanish children and unfavorable consumptions of fast food, processed bakery goods, candies, and sweet beverages in German children. Independently of country, girls, children with lower BMI-SDS and children with higher PA level were related with better diet quality. CONCLUSION: Spanish children showed higher adherence to MD and diet quality (IAES) compared to German children, but there was a trend toward a more "westernized" diet. Gender, body composition, and PA influenced nutrition regardless of country.

Objetivo: identificar o consumo e hábitos alimentares de crianças de 2 a 6 anos de uma escola comunitária em um município no Nordeste do estado de Santa Catarina em tempos de COVID- 19, no ano de 2020. Material e método: estudo transversal, descritivo, quantitativo. Participaram 30 responsáveis legais de crianças de 2 a 6 anos de idade. A coleta de dados foi realizada entre os meses de julho e agosto de 2020. Foi utilizado um formulário eletrônico e os dados obtidos foram analisados, inicialmente, de forma descritiva. Para verificar associação entre IMC, sexo e escolaridade foi utilizado teste Qui-quadrado e Exato de Fischer. Principais resultados: a média de idade das crianças foi de 4,33 anos ±1,30 anos. A amostra consistiu predominantemente do sexo feminino (70,0%), estudantes do período matutino (53,3%) e realizavam as refeições a mesa com a família (56,6%), quanto ao estado nutricional 30,0% apresentavam risco de sobrepeso/obesidade. Ao investigar-se a ingestão de alimentos ultraprocessados, houve associação significativa entre o sexo da criança (p=0,030) e escolaridade dos pais/responsáveis (p=0,030). Conclusão: torna-se necessário o desenvolvimento de medidas para o monitoramento contínuo do perfil nutricional de crianças e o desenvolvimento de ações interdisciplinares educativas, voltadas à promoção de hábitos saudáveis e à prevenção do excesso de peso, em especial, em momentos de crise, isolamento social e pandemia.


Introduction: In times of the COVID-19 pandemic and social distancing it is paramount to pay attention to infancy food habits in order to maintain good health, immunity, and to prevent immediate and future diseases. Objective: To identify the consumption and eating habits of children aged 2 to 6 years old at a community school in a municipality in the Northeast of the state of Santa Catarina in times of COVID-19, in 2020. Methods: This was a cross-sectional, descriptive and quantitative study. 30 legal guardians of children aged from 2 to 6 years old participated in this research. Data collection was performed between July and August of 2020. An electronic questionnaire was used and the data obtained was initially analyzed in a descriptive manner. The Chi- Square test and Fisher's exact test were applied to verify the association between BMI, sex, and education. Results: The children's mean age was 4.33 ±1,30 years. The sample was predominantly of female sex (70.0%), morning students (53.3%), and children who ate meals at the table with their families (56.6%). As for their nutritional status, 30.0% of the children presented risk for overweight/obesity. When the consumption of ultra-processed foods was investigated, a significant association between children's sex (p=0.030) and parents/legal guardians' education (p=0.030) was observed. Conclusion: It is necessary to develop strategies to continuously monitor the nutritional status of children and to create educational interdisciplinary actions towards the promotion of healthy habits and the prevention of excess body weight, especially during times of crisis, social distancing and pandemic.

Conclusión: se hace necesario el desarrollo de medidas de seguimiento continuo del perfil nutricional de los niños y el desarrollo de acciones educativas interdisciplinares, dirigidas a la promoción de hábitos saludables y a la prevención del sobrepeso, especialmente en épocas de crisis, aislamiento social y pandemia.

Introduction: Obesity is a current public health concern. Higher body weight is influenced by genetic and environmental parameters, and their interplay and is associated with a greater risk for several chronic diseases. Breastfeeding has been suggested as a preventive measure against obesity, which can further reduce long-term negative health outcomes for both women and children. Aim: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the role of breastfeeding on maternal and childhood overweight and obesity. Materials and Methods: This is a cross-sectional study conducted on 2515 healthy mothers and their children, aged 2−5 years, enrolled from nine different Greek rural and urban regions. Validated, standardized questionnaires were administrated that included anthropometric indices, socio-demographic characteristics of mothers and children, as well as breastfeeding practices. Results: Overall, 68% of participated women exclusively breastfed their children for at least 4 months. Mothers that exclusively breastfed showed a significantly lower prevalence of overweight and obesity after 2−5 years from delivery (p < 0.0001). Children that had exclusively been breastfed showed a significantly lower prevalence of overweight and obesity at the age of 2−5 years (p < 0.0001). Using multivariate regression analysis, exclusive breastfeeding for at least 4 months was associated with a two-fold lower risk for maternal and childhood overweight and obesity after 2−5 years from delivery, independent from maternal age, educational and economic status, and smoking habits (p < 0.0001). Conclusion: Exclusive breastfeeding for at least 4 months had a positive effect on childhood overweight and obesity, also contributing beneficially to post-natal maternal weight control. The beneficial effects of breastfeeding should be communicated to future and new mothers, while supportive actions for all mothers to initiate and continue breastfeeding their offspring should be implemented.

IntroductionBecause only 42% of elementary school-aged children and 8% of adolescents complete the recommended amount of physical activity, programs beyond physical education are required to address this inadequacy and the associated rise in overweight/obesity. ObjectiveOur 18-year research program, conducted through the lens of accepted behavioral theory, field-based investigations, and predictive models intended to shape programs to address physical inactivity and high body mass index in youths, was reviewed. ResultsIn research-to-practice task 1, studies evaluated a cognitive-behavioral elementary afterschool treatment developed from principles of social cognitive theory. It provided exercise/physical activity through an individualized goal-setting perspective and training in self-regulatory skills such as restructuring unproductive self-talk. In task 2, the research program focused on favorable associations between treatment-induced improvements in physical self-concept, the overall self, physical appearance, exercise-related self-efficacy, and mood; it also focused on increased physical activity and reductions in excess weight. Program adaptations for preschool and middle school were also found productive. As the treatment model was extended in research-to-practice task 3, a refined focus on self-regulation, self-efficacy, and mood yielded findings of enhanced effects. In task 4, protocol adaptations intended for youths with severe obesity, additional diabetes risks, and candidacies for bariatric surgery were reported. Finally, the reviewed research evaluated treatment adjuncts that incorporate technology. ConclusionOur program of field research yielded progress on physical inactivity and high body mass index in youths via psychosocial pathways. Findings suggested medical professionals more strongly attend to physical inactivity and weight issues in their young patients while seeking evidence-based methods to induce ongoing behavioral progress.

Mexican Americans are at increased risk for obesity upon immigration to the U.S., increasing their risk for diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. Our pilot individual lifestyle intervention culturally tailored for Mexican Americans, COMIDA (Consumo de Opciones Más Ideales De Alimentos) (Eating More Ideal Food Options), showed promising results. This paper presents outcomes from the group-based version of COMIDA. 129 overweight/obese Mexican Americans were enrolled in 'Group COMIDA'. Participants' weight (primary outcome), dietary intake and nutrition knowledge (secondary outcomes) were assessed pre- and post-intervention. Seventeen percent of participants experienced 5% weight loss at follow-up. Post-intervention, participants consumed more fruit and vegetables and fewer sweets and fried foods. A group-based, culturally adapted lifestyle intervention may be a more cost-effective approach than individual interventions to improve dietary behavior among underserved populations, though additional modifications may be considered to increase the intervention's effectiveness in promoting significant weight loss.
