OBJECTIVES: Non-inflammatory thickening of the subsynovial connective tissue (SSCT) in the carpal tunnel is commonly found in subjects with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), and quantification may shed light on CTS pathogenesis. To date, information on the reliability of ultrasound quantification of SSCT is scarce. Therefore, we investigated intrarater and interrater reliability/agreement for ultrasound quantification of SSCT thickness in subjects with and without CTS, and predictors for tissue thickness. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Two investigators quantified SSCT thickness and thickness ratio on ultrasound in 16 healthy subjects (age, 24-65 years; 16 left/14 right wrists) and 17 subjects with CTS (age, 37-83 years; 14 left/14 right wrists). Intra- and inter-rater reliability/agreement were assessed on intraclass correlation coefficients, standard error of measurement and minimal detectable change. A mixed-effects model was used to evaluate potential predictors for SSCT thickness. RESULTS: Intra- and inter-rater reliability analysis showed good to excellent intraclass correlation coefficients in both groups, ranging from 0.772 to 0.965. The maximum percentage standard error of measurement was 8%. The maximum minimal detectable change was 14% within raters, and 20% between raters. Both intra- and inter-rater reliability values for thickness ratio were poor. Presence of CTS (ß = 0.180; p = 0.015) correlated positively with SSCT thickness. CONCLUSIONS: Ultrasound is a reliable method for quantification of SSCT thickness, but not for thickness ratio. Presence of CTS correlates positively with SSCT thickness.

OBJECTIVE: To test whether the presence of structural entheseal lesions in psoriasis patients influences the risk of progression to psoriatic arthritis (PsA). METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study of psoriasis patients without clinical evidence of musculoskeletal involvement who underwent baseline assessment of structural entheseal lesions and volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD) at entheseal and intraarticular sites by high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography. Adjusted relative risks of developing PsA associated with baseline vBMD and the presence of structural entheseal lesions were calculated using multivariable Cox regression models. RESULTS: The cohort included 114 psoriasis patients (72 men and 42 women) with a mean ± SD follow-up duration of 28.2 ± 17.7 months, during which 24 patients developed PsA (9.7 per 100 patient-years [95% confidence interval (95% CI) 6.2-14.5]). Patients with structural entheseal lesions were at higher risk of developing PsA compared to patients without such lesions (21.4 per 100 patient-years [95% CI 12.5-34.3]; hazard ratio [HR] 5.10 [95% CI 1.53-16.99], P = 0.008). With respect to vBMD, a 1-SD increase in entheseal, but not intraarticular, vBMD was associated with an ~30% reduced risk of progression to PsA. Especially, higher cortical vBMD at entheseal segments was associated with a lower risk of developing PsA (HR 0.32 per 1 SD [95% CI 0.14-0.71]), and the association remained robust after multiple imputation of missing data (HR 0.64 [95% CI 0.42-0.98]). CONCLUSION: The presence of structural entheseal lesions as well as low cortical vBMD at entheseal segments are associated with an increased risk of developing PsA in patients with psoriasis.

Time-reversed ultrasonically-encoded (TRUE) optical focusing is a promising technique to realize deep-tissue optical focusing by employing ultrasonic guide stars. However, the sizes of the ultrasound-induced optical focus are determined by the wavelengths of the ultrasound, which are typically tens of microns. To satisfy the need for high-resolution imaging and manipulation, iterative TRUE (iTRUE) was proposed to break this limit by triggering repeated interactions between light and ultrasound and compressing the optical focus. However, even for the best result reported to date, the resolutions along the ultrasound axial and lateral direction were merely improved by only 2-fold to 3-fold. This observation leads to doubt whether iTRUE can be effective in reducing the size of the optical focus. In this work, we address this issue by developing a physical model to investigate iTRUE in a reflection mode numerically. Our numerical results show that, under the influence of shot noises, iTRUE can reduce the optical focus to a single speckle within a finite number of iterations. This model also allows numerical investigations of iTRUE in detail. Quantitatively, based on the parameters set, we show that the optical focus can be reduced to a size of 1.6 µm and a peak-to-background ratio over 104 can be realized. It is also shown that iTRUE cannot significantly advance the focusing depth. We anticipate that this work can serve as useful guidance for optimizing iTRUE system for future biomedical applications, including deep-tissue optical imaging, laser surgery, and optogenetics.

Mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) is an emerging technology that holds potential for improving, biomarker discovery, metabolomics research, pharmaceutical applications and clinical diagnosis. Despite many solutions being developed, the large data size and high dimensional nature of MSI, especially 3D datasets, still pose computational and memory complexities that hinder accurate identification of biologically relevant molecular patterns. Moreover, the subjectivity in the selection of parameters for conventional pre-processing approaches can lead to bias. Therefore, we assess if a probabilistic generative model based on a fully connected variational autoencoder can be used for unsupervised analysis and peak learning of MSI data to uncover hidden structures. The resulting msiPL method learns and visualizes the underlying non-linear spectral manifold, revealing biologically relevant clusters of tissue anatomy in a mouse kidney and tumor heterogeneity in human prostatectomy tissue, colorectal carcinoma, and glioblastoma mouse model, with identification of underlying m/z peaks. The method is applied for the analysis of MSI datasets ranging from 3.3 to 78.9 GB, without prior pre-processing and peak picking, and acquired using different mass spectrometers at different centers.

BACKGROUND: Carpal tunnel syndrome patients demonstrate diminished motion of the median nerve and fibrotic changes in the subsynovial connective tissue within the carpal tunnel. Currently, there are few prognostic factors to help predict the outcome of commonly performed treatments including surgical carpal tunnel release and corticosteroid injections. This study aimed to non-invasively assess the changes in the dynamic response of the subsynovial tissue relative to tendon motion after the intervention and to correlate this with disease severity. METHODS: A total of 145 patients with carpal tunnel syndrome were recruited into this study. Clinical and demographic data, electrophysiological severity and dynamic ultrasound images were collected before and after treatment, either by injection or surgery. The relative motion of the subsynovial tissue with the underlying middle finger flexor digitorum superficialis tendon was measured using a speckle tracking algorithm and was expressed as a shear index (SI). Baseline and follow-up data, the association between change in SI and severity, and the role of treatment modality were analyzed and statistically compared. FINDINGS: Overall, there was a significant increase (more relative motion) after treatment in the mean shear index from 79.9% (±15.4% SD) to 82.9% (±14.8% SD) (p = 0.03). Secondary analyses showed that this change was mostly present in those with mild disease severity undergoing surgery (p = 0.01). INTERPRETATION: This study shows that the relative subsynovial tissue movement increases in patients after intervention. The present study lays a foundation for future studies to non-invasively assess the role of carpal tunnel dynamics in response to treatment.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the influence of soft-tissue volume grafting employing autogenous connective tissue graft (CTG) simultaneous to implant placement on peri-implant tissue health and stability. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This cross-sectional observational study enrolled 19 patients (n = 29 implants) having dental implants placed with simultaneous soft-tissue volume grafting using CTG (test), and 36 selected controls (n = 55 implants) matched for age and years in function, who underwent conventional implant therapy (i.e., without soft-tissue volume grafting). Clinical outcomes (i.e., plaque index (PI), bleeding on probing (BOP), probing depth (PD), and mucosal recession (MR)) and frequency of peri-implant diseases were evaluated in both groups after a mean follow-up period of 6.15 ± 4.63 years. RESULTS: Significant differences between test and control groups at the patient level were noted for median BOP (0.0 vs. 25.0%; p = 0.023) and PD scores (2.33 vs. 2.83 mm; p = 0.001), respectively. The prevalence of peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis amounted to 42.1% and 5.3% in the test and to 52.8% and 13.9% in the control group, respectively. CONCLUSION: Simultaneous soft-tissue grafting using CTG had a beneficial effect on the maintenance of peri-implant health.

PURPOSE: Magnetic resonance imaging can detect soft- and hard-tissue abnormalities and has become the primary imaging modality for temporomandibular joints. However, few studies have quantitatively evaluated rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in temporomandibular joints using diffusion-weighted imaging. The purpose of this study was to assess the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values of the inflammatory connective tissue around the mandibular condyle in RA. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study. We analyzed the magnetic resonance imaging studies of patients with suspected temporomandibular joint disorders performed between April 2008 and August 2020. The predictor variable was disease status (RA-y/n). The primary outcome variable was the mean of ADC values of the connective tissue around the mandibular condyle. The other variables were age and sex. Furthermore, the ADC values were compared between the 2 groups. Data were analyzed using a Mann-Whitney U test, Spearman's correlation coefficient, and a receiver operating characteristic curve. P < .05 was considered to indicate statistical significance. RESULTS: In total, 35 patients (18 normal patients and 17 patients with RA) were included. The mean ADC values were 1.26 ± 0.11 × 10-3 mm2/s and 1.60 ± 0.19 × 10-3 mm2/s in the control and RA groups, respectively (P < .001). Receiver operating characteristic analysis revealed that a cutoff of 1.37 for ADC values for RA provided an accuracy of 0.86. The sensitivity and specificity of ADC values were 0.94 and 0.83, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: ADC values of the inflammatory connective tissue around the mandibular condyle in RA were significantly higher in the RA group than those in the control group. This parameter might be useful for the quantitative evaluation of RA.

AIM: To describe the application of power Doppler Ultrasonography (US) for evaluating blood flow at implant and palatal donor sites following soft tissue augmentation with the connective tissue graft (CTG). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Five patients exhibiting a peri-implant soft tissue dehiscence received treatment with a coronally advanced flap and corresponding CTG. Power Doppler US was used for assessing blood volume at baseline, 1 week, 1 month, 6 months and 12 months post-surgery for assessing blood-flow dynamics at the implant and palatal donor sites. The speed-weighted and power-weighted colour pixel density (CPPD) were computed from colour velocity (CV) and colour power (CP), respectively. RESULTS: A mean increase in CV of 199.25% was observed at the midfacial region of the implant sites after 1 week compared to baseline. CV and CP were increased in all sites at 1 week and 1 month. At 6 and 12 months, the mean CV appeared lower than baseline at the implant sites. CCPD was increased at the palatal donor sites and at the great palatine foramen areas at the 1-week and 1-month post-operative evaluations. CONCLUSIONS: Power Doppler US is a non-invasive and valuable tool for estimating tissue perfusion and CPPD variation during different phases of intra-oral soft tissue graft healing.

INTRODUCTION: The infringement of supracrestal tissue attachment by subgingival restorative margins, extensive caries, and root fractures, can compromise the periodontal health, resulting in inflammation and loss of periodontal supporting tissues. This report describes a case of a root fracture on the upper left central incisor that was successfully treated using a conservative approach, by applying the restorative alveolar interface (RAI) management combined with tunnel technique and a subepithelial connective tissue graft (SCTG). CASE PRESENTATION: A 24-year-old male patient presented with a provisional single-unit fixed prosthesis on his upper left central incisor, in function for 4 years, with the chief complaint of prosthesis discoloration. After clinical and radiographic examination, a diagnosis of root fracture was established. Following the removal of the provisional prosthesis, a full-thickness flap was elevated creating a tunnel. The elimination of the fracture line/angle, root recontouring, and planning was then performed with the aid of a conical long diamond bur and periodontal curets. Additionally, an SCTG was placed buccally into the tunnel. The final zirconia layered with E-max crown was placed 6 months after surgery. At 12- and 24-month follow-up, the periodontal tissues presented healthy aspect, no bleeding on probing, and a 4-mm probing depth. CONCLUSIONS: Surgical repositioning of the restorative margin can be an alternative and conservative treatment approach to compromised teeth with subgingival fracture line/angle. However, case selection should be carefully considered and restorability assessed as limitations might apply.

RESUMO

Ultrasonography is a valuable tool that can be used in many capacities to evaluate and treat pediatric orthopaedic patient. It has the capability to depict bone, cartilaginous and soft-tissue structures, and provide dynamic information. This technique can be readily applied to a wide range of pediatric conditions, including developmental dysplasia of the hip, congenital limb deficiencies, fracture management, joint effusions, and many other musculoskeletal pathologies. There are many benefits of implementing ultrasonography as a regular tool. It is readily accessible at most centers, and information can be quickly obtained in a minimally invasive way, which limits the need for radiation exposure. Ultrasonography is a safe and reliable tool that pediatric orthopaedic surgeons can incorporate into the diagnosis and management of a broad spectrum of pathology.

RESUMO

Sialadenoma papilliferum is a benign salivary tumour which rarely occurs in the bronchial tree. Up to now, only four cases of pulmonary papillary sialadenoma have been reported in the literature. We discuss the case of a male patient with an accidental finding of a middle lobe nodule. The patient underwent a minimally invasive anatomical resection of the lobe to remove the lesion; the postoperative course was regular, and he was healthy at the last follow-up.

Cystic fibrosis is characterized by lung dysfunction involving mucus hypersecretion, bacterial infections, and inflammatory response. Inflammation triggers pro-fibrotic signals that compromise lung structure and function. At present, several in vitro cystic fibrosis models have been developed to study epithelial dysfunction but none of these focuses on stromal alterations. Here we show a new cystic fibrosis 3D stromal lung model made up of primary fibroblasts embedded in their own extracellular matrix and investigate its morphological and transcriptomic features. Cystic fibrosis fibroblasts showed a high proliferation rate and produced an abundant and chaotic matrix with increased protein content and elastic modulus. More interesting, they had enhanced pro-fibrotic markers and genes involved in epithelial function and inflammatory response. In conclusion, our study reveals that cystic fibrosis fibroblasts maintain in vitro an activated pro-fibrotic state. This abnormality may play in vivo a role in the modulation of epithelial and inflammatory cell behavior and lung remodeling. We argue that the proposed bioengineered model may provide new insights on epithelial/stromal/inflammatory cells crosstalk in cystic fibrosis, paving the way for novel therapeutic strategies.

Vertebral endplate bone marrow lesions, visualized on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as Modic changes (MC), are associated with chronic low back pain (cLBP). Since guidelines recommend against routine spinal MRI for cLBP in primary care, MC may be underdiagnosed. Serum biomarkers for MC would allow early diagnosis, inform clinical care decisions, and supplement treatment monitoring. We aimed to discover biomarkers in the blood serum that correlate with MC pathophysiological processes. For this single-site cross-sectional study, we recruited 54 subjects with 38 cLBP patients and 16 volunteers without a history of LBP. All subjects completed an Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) questionnaire and 10-cm Visual Analog Score (VAS) for LBP (VASback) and leg pain. Lumbar T1-weighted and fat-saturated T2-weighted MRI were acquired at 3T and used for MC classification in each endplate. Blood serum was collected on the day of MRI. Biomarkers related to disc resorption and bone marrow fibrosis were analyzed with enzyme-linked immune-absorbent assays. The concentration of biomarkers between no MC and any type of MC (AnyMC), MC1, and MC2 were compared. The Area Under the Curve (AUC) of the Receiver Operating Characteristics were calculated for each biomarker and for bivariable biomarker models. We found that biomarkers related to type III and type IV collagen degradation and formation tended to correlate with the presence of MC (p = 0.060-0.088). The bivariable model with the highest AUC was PRO-C3 + C4M and had a moderate diagnostic value for AnyMC in cLBP patients (AUC = 0.73, specificity = 78.9%, sensitivity = 73.7%). In conclusion, serum biomarkers related to the formation and degradation of type III and type IV collagen, which are key molecules in bone marrow fibrosis, correlated with MC presence. Bone marrow fibrosis may be an important pathophysiological process in MC that should be targeted in larger biomarker and treatment studies.

Sexual dimorphism in Homo-sapiens is a phenomenon of a direct product of evolution by natural selection where evolutionary forces acted separately on the sexes which brought about the differences in appearance between male and female such as in shape and size. Advances in morphometrics have skyrocketed the rate of research on sex differences in human and other species. However, the current challenges facing 3D in the acquisition of facial data such as lack of homology, insufficient landmarks to characterize the facial shape and complex computational process for facial point digitization require further study in the domain of sex dimorphism. This study investigates sexual dimorphism in the human face with the application of Automatic Homologous Multi-points Warping (AHMW) for 3D facial landmark by building a template mesh as a reference object which is thereby applied to each of the target mesh on Stirling/ESRC dataset containing 101 subjects (male = 47, female = 54). The semi-landmarks are subjected to sliding along tangents to the curves and surfaces until the bending energy between a template and a target form is minimal. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is used for feature selection and the features are classified using Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) with an accuracy of 99.01 % which demonstrates that the method is robust.

Los avances en el área de la morfometría, han generado un aumento significativo de las investigaciones en las diferencias de sexo en humanos y otras especies. Sin embargo, los desafíos actuales que enfrenta el 3D en el análisis de datos faciales, como la falta de homología, puntos de referencia insuficientes para caracterizar la forma facial y la complejidad del proceso computacional para la digitalización de puntos faciales, requiere un estudio adicional en el área del dimorfismo sexual. Este estudio investiga el dimorfismo sexual en el rostro humano con la aplicación de la deformación automática de múltiples puntos homólogos para el hito facial 3D, mediante la elaboración de una malla de plantilla como objeto de referencia, y se aplica en cada una de las mallas objetivas en el conjunto de datos Stirling / ESRC que contiene 101 sujetos (hombre = 47, mujer = 54). Los semi-puntos de referencia se deslizan a lo largo de las tangentes a las curvas y superficies hasta que la energía de flexión entre una plantilla y una forma objetivo es mínima. El análisis de componentes principales (PCA) se utiliza para la selección de características y las características se clasifican mediante el análisis discriminante lineal (ADL) con una precisión del 99,01 %, lo que demuestra la validez del método.

BACKGROUND: Morbidity following pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) has been reported to remain high. This study sought to measure the peak Hounsfield units (HUs) of visceral attenuation in patients undergoing PD and to assess the quality of adipocytes by comparing these measurements with perioperative factors. METHODS: Patients undergoing PD were retrospectively identified (n = 108). Abdominal perimeter, subcutaneous fat area (SFA), visceral fat area (VFA), and peak HU of the VFA were measured. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify independent predictors of postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF) or complications. Histopathological examination was performed for qualitative diagnosis of the stromal tissue. RESULTS: The overall rate of POPF was 16%, and severe complications occurred in 23% of the cases. A criterion for peak HU of the VFA only independently predicted POPF (p = 0.007) in the multivariate analysis. A criterion for peak HU of the VFA (p = 0.015) was associated with an increased rate of postoperative severe complications in the univariate analysis. The peak HU of the VFA was significantly correlated with abdominal perimeter (p < 0.001) and VFA (p < 0.001). The peak HU of the VFA was significantly correlated with adipocyte diameter (p < 0.001) and the ratio of stromal connective tissue area around the adipocytes (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The peak HU of the VFA was an independent factor contributing to severe complications, including POPF after PD. It reflects the amount of stromal connective tissue around the adipocytes.

OBJECTIVE: Measuring soft tissue thickness after mucogingival surgery has traditionally been performed by means of a calibrated transgingival probe. The main aim of this study was to apply a non-invasive technique based on digital images formatted as Standard Tessellation Language (STL) files to quantify soft tissue volume after connective tissue grafting. CLINICAL INNOVATION REPORT: Ten patients who presented Cairo Class I gingival recession were selected for connective tissue grafting using the tunnel technique. In all patients, the initial position of the gingiva and quantity of keratinized tissue were recorded, and gingival recession was scanned with an intra-oral scanner. Six months after surgery, the same intra-oral parameters were recorded and compared with the initial registers using digital volumetric analysis software. RESULTS: Complete root coverage was obtained in most patients (90%), mean coverage being of 2.70 mm with a mean increase in volume of 115.49 mm3 in the treated areas. No pattern was identified that indicated a statistically significant relation between gingival recession and coverage volume in mm3 . CONCLUSIONS: Digital processing of pre- and post-treatment images makes it possible to measure the volume of tissue gained after tissue graft surgery simply and non-invasively. The technique is an objective and reproducible method for measuring soft tissue thickness.

BACKGROUND: Fibro-adipose vascular anomaly (FAVA) is a rare and recently described complex vascular malformation. The clinical and imaging features and morphology can be confusing and often overlap with features of other vascular malformations and tumors. OBJECTIVE: To present the imaging characterization of FAVA in association with clinical features. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated clinical and imaging (MRI, sonography and venography) findings in FAVA. We documented the clinical presentation, lesion morphology, imaging characteristics, tissue distribution, pattern of contrast enhancement and vascular characteristics. RESULTS: Thirty-eight people (31 female, 7 male) ages 1-30 years (mean 12 years) were diagnosed with FAVA based on clinical findings combined with imaging or histopathological findings (n=17). Most lesions were in the lower extremity (n=36). Three patterns were noticed: focal, focal infiltrative and diffuse. CONCLUSION: Fibro-adipose vascular anomaly, a rare and complex vascular malformation, has distinct clinical and imaging features that a radiologist should be familiar with to avoid delay in diagnosis and to direct appropriate management.

Manual dissection and histological observation are common methods used to investigate human tissues. However, manual dissection can damage delicate structures while processing and histological observation provide limited information through cross-sectional imaging. Micro X-ray computed tomography (microCT) is an effective tool for obtaining three-dimensional information without damaging specimens. However, it shows limited efficiency in differentiating soft tissue parts. Use of contrast-enhancing agents, like phosphotungstic acid (PTA), can solve this problem by improving soft tissue contrast. We implemented microCT with PTA to investigate the human orbicularis retaining ligament (ORL), which is a delicate structure in the orbit area. In this method, harvested specimens are fixed in formalin, dehydrated in serial ethanol solutions, and stained with a PTA solution. After staining, microCT scanning, 3D reconstruction, and analysis are performed. Skin, ligaments, and muscles can be clearly visualized using this method. The specimen size and duration of staining are essential features of the method. The suitable specimen thickness was about 5-7 mm, above which the process was slowed, and the optimum duration was 5-7 days, below which an empty hole in the central area occasionally occurred. To maintain the location and direction of small pieces during cutting, sewing on the same region of each part is recommended. Furthermore, preliminary analyses of the anatomical structure are needed to correctly identify each piece. Parafilm can be used to prevent drying, but care should be taken to prevent specimen distortion. Our multidirectional observation showed that the ORL is composed of a multilayered meshwork of continuous plates, rather than thread-like fibers, as reported previously. These results suggest that microCT scanning with PTA is useful for examining specific compartments within complex structures of human tissue. It may be helpful in the analyses of cancer tissues, nerve tissues, and various organs, like the heart and liver.

MRI is an invaluable diagnostic tool in the investigation and management of patients with pathology of the head and neck. However, numerous technical challenges exist, owing to a combination of fine anatomical detail, complex geometry (that is subject to frequent motion) and susceptibility effects from both endogenous structures and exogenous implants. Over recent years, there have been rapid developments in several aspects of head and neck imaging including higher resolution, isotropic 3D sequences, diffusion-weighted and diffusion-tensor imaging as well as permeability and perfusion imaging. These have led to improvements in anatomic, dynamic and functional imaging. Further developments using contrast-enhanced 3D FLAIR for the delineation of endolymphatic structures and black bone imaging for osseous structures are opening new diagnostic avenues. Furthermore, technical advances in compressed sensing and metal artefact reduction have the capacity to improve imaging speed and quality, respectively. This review explores novel and evolving MRI sequences that can be employed to evaluate diseases of the head and neck, including the skull base.

AIM: To present a new protocol to optimise ultrasound (US) assessment of haemophilic arthropathy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ultrasound of haemophilic arthropathy joints was performed using three different ultrasound protocols, namely, the Toronto-Vellore Comprehensive Ultrasound (TVC-US) protocol, the Haemophilia Early Arthropathy Detection with Ultrasound (HEAD-US), and the newly developed Universal Simplified Ultrasound (US-US) protocol. Synovial hypertrophy, haemosiderin deposition, effusion, erosion, and cartilage loss were evaluated in 20 joints. The reliability and diagnostic efficiency of these protocols was compared using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). RESULTS: The correlation between the TVC-US and US-US protocols for synovial hypertrophy was excellent: kappa significance (KS) was 1, but was substantial (KS=0.65) with the HEAD-US protocol. For effusion, both the TVC-US and the HEAD-US protocols had substantial correlation with the US-US protocol (KS=0.7 and 0.6 respectively). The correlation for erosion and cartilage loss was excellent between the TVC-US and the US-US with MRI (KS=1), but poor (KS=0) with the HEAD-US protocol. The US-US protocol also had good interobserver agreement (KS=1). CONCLUSION: The accuracy of the US-US protocol is comparable to the TVC-US protocol and MRI and is superior to the HEAD-US protocol in the assessment of haemophilic arthropathy.
