OBJECTIVE: Needle biopsy is a common technique used to obtain cell and tissue samples for diagnostics. Currently, two biopsy methods are widely used: (i) fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) and (ii) core needle biopsy (CNB). However, these methods have limitations. Recently, we developed ultrasound-enhanced fine-needle aspiration biopsy (USeFNAB), which employs a needle that flexurally oscillates at an ultrasonic frequency of ∼32 kHz. The needle motion contributes to increased tissue collection while preserving cells and tissue constructs for pathological assessment. Previously, USeFNAB has been investigated only in ex vivo animal tissue. The present study was aimed at determining the feasibility of using USeFNAB in human epithelial and lymphoid tissue. METHODS: Needle biopsy samples were acquired using FNAB, CNB and USeFNAB on ex vivo human tonsils (N = 10). The tissue yield and quality were quantified by weight measurement and blinded pathologists' assessments. The biopsy methods were then compared. RESULTS: The results revealed sample mass increases of, on average, 2.3- and 5.4-fold with USeFNAB compared with the state-of-the-art FNAB and CNB, respectively. The quality of tissue fragments collected by USeFNAB was equivalent to that collected by the state-of-the-art methods in terms of morphology and immunohistochemical stainings made from cell blocks as judged by pathologists. CONCLUSION: Our study indicates that USeFNAB is a promising method that could improve tissue yield to ensure sufficient material for ancillary histochemical and molecular studies for diagnostic pathology, thereby potentially increasing diagnostic accuracy.

PURPOSE: Early detection of mucosal neoplastic lesions is crucial for a patient's prognosis. This has led to the development of effective optical endoscopic diagnostic methods such as narrow band imaging (NBI) and autofluorescence (AFI). Independent of each other, both of these methods were proven useful in the detection of mucosal neoplasias. There are limited reported data comparing both methods for oropharyngeal cancer diagnostics. The aim of the study was to compare NBI and AFI endoscopic visualization of signs in identifying tonsillar squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and assessing its extent and to determine whether the score was related to the evaluator's experience. METHODS: Patients with tonsillar SCC underwent endoscopic pharyngeal examination using NBI and AFI. Fiftyseven video sequences of examinations of lesions proven to be SCC were evaluated by three reviewers. The accuracy of determination of lesion extent and visualization of its endoscopic signs of malignancy were evaluated. RESULTS: Endoscopic visualization of tumour spread was significantly better using AFI than NBI (p = 0.0003). No significant difference was found between NBI and AFI in the visualization of endoscopic malignancy determining signs (p = 0.1405). No significant difference was found among the three reviewers in the visualization of tumour spread and for identifying malignancy-determining signs in NBI endoscopy or AFI endoscopy. CONCLUSIONS: The results show that AFI obtained better results for assessing the extent of tonsillar cancers than NBI. Both methods were proven to be equal in the visualization of endoscopic malignancy-determining signs. Both are useful even for less experienced evaluators.

BACKGROUND: When analyzing the relationship between adenotonsillar hypertrophy and craniofacial morphology, researchers generally regarded hypertrophied adenoids and tonsils as a whole. It remains unclear whether different enlarged sites of pharyngeal lymphoid tissue would correlate with multiple craniofacial subtypes. We hypothesized there would be craniofacial subtypes correlated with different locations of hypertrophied adenoid and tonsil. METHODS: Lateral cephalometric radiographs were obtained from 466 children (171 boys and 295 girls, aged 12.27 ± 2.69 years). They were divided into four groups according to different sites of enlarged pharyngeal lymphoid tissue: adenoid hypertrophy group (AG, n = 126), tonsillar hypertrophy group (TG, n = 59), adenotonsillar hypertrophy group (ATG, n = 69) and control group (CG, n = 212). Five commonly used angles for cephalometric measurements were investigated: SNA (Sella-Nasion-Point A), SNB (Sella-Nasion-Point B), ANB (Point A-Nasion-Point B), mandibular plane angle (MP/SN) and Y-axis angle (SGn/FH). RESULTS: Children with isolated tonsillar hypertrophy correlated with increased SNA (unstandardized regression coefficient B = 1.38, p = 0.009) and SNB (B = 1.99, p = 0.001) compared with controls. However, children with isolated adenoid hypertrophy correlated with decreased SNB (B=-0.94, p = 0.036), increased ANB (B = 0.74, p = 0.014) and increased MP/SN (B = 2.22, p < 0.001). Similarly, children with adenotonsillar hypertrophy correlated with decreased SNB (B=-1.36, p = 0.015), increased ANB (B = 1.35, p < 0.001) and increased MP/SN (B = 2.64, p = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Isolated adenoid hypertrophy correlated with a retrognathic mandible, an increased maxillo-mandibular sagittal discrepancy, and an increased mandibular plane angle. Isolated tonsillar hypertrophy correlated with maxillary and mandibular protrusion. Adenotonsillar hypertrophy did not show a superimposed craniofacial pattern of the above two but showed the same craniofacial pattern as isolated adenoid hypertrophy.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate hyoid bone position and airway volume in subjects with adenoid hypertrophy, tonsillar hypertrophy, and adenotonsillar hypertrophy compared to subjects with nonobstructive adenoids or tonsils and to assess the correlation between hyoid bone and airway parameters. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 121 subjects were grouped based on adenoid or tonsillar hypertrophy into four groups, as follows: (1) control group (C-group), (2) adenoid hypertrophy group (AH-group), (3) adenotonsillar hypertrophy group (ATH-group), and (4) tonsillar hypertrophy group (TH-group). Hyoid bone position and airway volumes were measured. The Kruskal-Wallis test was used for intergroup comparison, followed by pairwise comparison using the Mann-Whitney U-test. Bivariate correlation was conducted using Spearman correlation coefficients. Multiple linear regression was performed to create a model for airway volume based on hyoid bone predictive variables. RESULTS: No significant difference was found between subjects with isolated adenoid or tonsillar hypertrophy compared to the C-group. However, the ATH-group exhibited a significantly decreased hyoid bone vertical distance (HV), total airway volume (TA volume), and retroglossal airway volume (RG volume) compared to the C-group. HV and age had a high potential in terms of explaining the RG volume, whereas the TA volume and retropalatal airway volume (RP volume) models were not as successful as the RG volume counterpart. CONCLUSIONS: Subjects in ATH-group were characterized by an elevated hyoid bone position and constricted TA volume and RG volume compared to those in the C-group. HV and age were predictor variables that best explained retroglossal airway volume.

OBJECTIVES: The management of incidental findings of FDG-avid tonsils on PET/CT (IFT) is unclear. We aimed to explore the prevalence of malignancy in IFT, identify risk factors for malignancy, and calculate optimal cutoffs of maximum standardized uptake values (SUVmax ) to discriminate between benign and malignant lesions. METHODS: All patients who were tonsillectomized at our institution because of IFT from October 2011 to December 2020 were included. Patients undergoing PET/CT due to suspected tonsillar disease or cancer of unknown primary were excluded. RESULTS: In total, 77 patients were included, of which 11 (14%) of them had IFT malignancy. Dysphagia (p = 0.019) and alcohol abuse (p = 0.035) were associated with malignancy. Absolute SUVmax cutoff (≥9: sensitivity 100%; specificity 53%) was superior to SUVmax side-to-side ratio (≥1.5: sensitivity 64%; specificity 70%) to discriminate between benign and malignant lesions. CONCLUSION: We recommend tonsillectomy for patients with IFT displaying SUVmax ≥ 9.0, ratio ≥ 1.5, or symptoms or findings suggesting malignancy. RESUMO

Actinomycosis is a chronic suppurative infection that can develop almost anywhere in the body. Cervicofacial actinomycosis is the most common form of the disease. We report a case of tonsillar actinomycosis that causes massive, asymmetric enlargement of tonsil and mimics the neoplasia. The most common cause of asymmetric tonsil hypertrophy is tonsillar squamous cell carcinoma and lymphomas. Tonsillar actinomycosis is a rare entity that should be kept in mind, if cases cannot be clarified with clinical and laboratory findings, when radiological findings are suspicious about malignancy.

The purposes of the study were to determine whether there are differences in texture analysis parameters between tonsil cancers and normal tonsils, and to correlate texture analysis with 18F-FDG PET/CT to investigate the relationship between texture analysis and metabolic parameters. Sixty-four patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the palatine tonsil were included. A ROI was drawn, including all slices, to involve the entire tumor. The contralateral normal tonsil was used for comparison with the tumors. Texture analysis parameters, mean, standard deviation (SD), entropy, mean positive pixels, skewness, and kurtosis were obtained using commercially available software. Parameters were compared between the tumor and the normal palatine tonsils. Comparisons were also performed among early tonsil cancer, advanced tonsil cancer, and normal tonsils. An ROC curve analysis was performed to assess discrimination of tumor from normal tonsils. Correlation between texture analysis and 18F-FDG PET/CT was performed. Compared to normal tonsils, the tumors showed a significantly lower mean, higher SD, higher entropy, lower skewness, and higher kurtosis on most filters (p<0.001). On comparisons among normal tonsils, early cancers, and advanced tonsil cancers, SD and entropy showed significantly higher values on all filters (p<0.001) between early cancers and normal tonsils. The AUC from the ROC analysis was 0.91, obtained from the entropy. A mild correlation was shown between texture parameters and metabolic parameters. The texture analysis parameters, especially entropy, showed significant differences in contrast-enhanced CT results between tumor and normal tonsils, and between early tonsil cancers and normal tonsils. Texture analysis can be useful as an adjunctive tool for the diagnosis of tonsil cancers.

OBJECTIVE: To identify the appropriate treatment in the tonsillar region's infections, a distinction between tonsillitis with or without abscess formation is essential. Ultrasound proved to be a valuable method in identifying abscess formation in the head and neck region. However, no report described the assessment of the tonsil region. This study aims to determine the feasibility of transcervical ultrasound for abscess visualization in the palatal tonsillar region. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of 354 patients presenting with clinical suspicion of tonsillar abscess to a tertiary referral center and university hospital. All patients received a transcervical ultrasound to establish a primary diagnosis. The existence of an abscess was confirmed by puncture and incision, or final tonsillectomy. If no abscess could be delineated, non-abscessing tonsillitis was supposed, and conservative primary therapy and closed follow-up examinations were performed. RESULTS: After the first diagnostic ultrasound examination, in 257 cases (72.59%), the diagnosis of an abscess could be established, but in 97 cases (27.40%), due to missing abscess formation criteria, non-abscessing tonsillitis was documented. Overall, ultrasonography demonstrated an overall accuracy of 78.8% in this selected cohort. The sensitivity, specificity, PPV, and NPV after the first ultrasound examination were calculated with 75.1%, 88.6%, 94.6%, and 57.3%, respectively. CONCLUSION: The presented data confirm that an abscess formation due to tonsillitis can be detected by transcervical ultrasound, enabling prompt, adequate management. As transcervical ultrasound can be conducted fast and is not associated with radiation, it can be regarded as a first-line diagnostic tool in this condition.

BACKGROUND: Margins in transoral surgery for tonsil cancer can be limited by oropharyngeal wall thickness (OWT), but the normal range is not well established. METHODS: In 240 noncancer subjects, OWT was measured bilaterally in the vicinity of the tonsils with MRI. Statistical analysis was performed to assess for interaction of age, sex, location, and obesity. RESULTS: Mean(SD) OWT measured 3.4(0.6) mm posteriorly, 3.7(2.0) mm between the styloglossus and stylopharyngeus, and 5.3(0.8) mm laterally. OWT was greater in men, correlated with obesity, decreased posteriorly and laterally in the 60-80 versus 40-59 year age groups, and increased when styloglossus/stylopharyngeus were closer. OWT was <5 mm in 36.7%-97.9% of locations, with the largest percentage below this threshold located posteriorly. CONCLUSIONS: OWT is frequently <5 mm, particularly in the posterior and intermuscular areas, suggesting that a smaller surgical margin may need to be accepted in transoral tonsil cancer surgery for anatomic reasons.

OBJECTIVES: To develop a new method for the objective evaluation of airway obstruction due to tonsillar hypertrophy using ultrasound (US) in children. METHODS: The oropharynx was examined in patients, and tonsil grades were evaluated according to the staging system of Brodsky et al (Int J Pediatr Otorhinolaryngol 1987; 13:149-156). The narrowest intertonsillar distance (ITD) and widest transverse length of the tongue base (TLTB) were then measured by US, and their ratio was calculated. The clinical value of US was investigated for the classification of tonsillar hypertrophies as nonobstructive or obstructive by matching the patients' clinical grades with the US data. RESULTS: A total of 102 patients (age range, 2-12 years) were included in the study. According to the Brodsky staging system, 44.1% and 55.9% of the patients were in nonobstructive (stages I and II) and obstructive (stages III and IV) tonsillar hypertrophy groups, respectively. The area under the curve was 0.991 (95% confidence interval, 0.977-0.999) according to a receiver operating characteristic curve analysis between the Brodsky staging and the ITD/TLTB ratio. The optimal cutoff value for the ITD/TLTB ratio for the diagnosis of obstructive tonsillar hypertrophy was found to be 0.3 or less, which had 96.5% sensitivity and 95.6% specificity. CONCLUSIONS: The degree of airway obstruction due to tonsillar hypertrophy can be objectively determined by US in children. An ITD/TLTB ratio of 0.3 or less was found to be compatible with obstructive tonsillar hypertrophy. This new and easily applicable evaluation method may provide considerable value and guidance for tonsillectomy decisions.

Soft tissue calcifications can indicate the presence of more serious, potentially life-threatening pathologies. Therefore, their study can lead to an early diagnosis of those conditions that have not yet become clinically apparent. Main objective: To determine the prevalence of calcifications in soft tissues of the head and neck in cone beam computed tomography images obtained from the Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology Service at Universidad Andrés Bello (UNAB), Viña del Mar, Chile. Material and Methods: Retrospective, cross-sectional, quantitative study. A total of 288 images of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) were used. Images were obtained at random from the database of the Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology Service at UNAB, Viña Del Mar, between 2014 and 2019. Results: A prevalence of 59.72% of soft tissue calcifications was obtained. The most prevalent were: tonsilloliths and calcified stylohyoid ligament, accounting for 30.65% and 45.56%, respectively. Conclusion: A high prevalence of soft tissue calcifications was found in a population that has not been studied previously; therefore, it is important that the dentist perform a detailed analysis of the cone beam computed tomography.


Introducción: Las calcificaciones en tejidos blandos pueden indicar patologías más graves, que incluso pueden comprometer la vida. Por lo tanto, investigarlas puede conducir a un diagnóstico temprano de aquellas que aún no se han manifestado clínicamente. Objetivo principal: determinar la prevalencia de calcificaciones en tejidos blandos de cabeza y cuello en tomografía computarizada de haz cónico del Servicio de Radiología Oral y Maxilofacial de la UNAB, Viña del Mar, Chile. Material y Métodos: Estudio retrospectivo, transversal, cuantitativo. Se utilizaron 288 volúmenes de tomografía computarizada de haz cónico (CBCT, por las iniciales en inglés de Cone Beam Computed Tomography), obtenidas al azar, de la base de datos del Servicio de Radiología Oral y Maxilofacial de la Universidad Andrés Bello (UNAB), Viña del Mar entre 2014 y 2019. Resultados: Se obtuvo una prevalencia de 59.72% de calcificaciones en tejidos blandos. Las más prevalentes fueron: tonsilolitos, con un 30,65% y ligamento estilohioídeo calcificado, con un 45,56%. Conclusión: Se encontró una alta prevalencia de calcificaciones en tejidos blandos en una población que no ha sido estudiada previamente, por ello es importante que el odontólogo realice un análisis detallado de la tomografía computarizada de haz cónico.

CONTEXT: To describe this new clinical entity, diagnosis, and potential management of pediatric intratonsillar/peritonsillar abscesses in children affected by infectious mononucleosis. METHODS: After institutional review board approval, a retrospective chart review of patients who underwent testing for infectious mononucleosis and also had a computed tomography scan of the head and neck was completed. Those who did not have imaging showing the palatine tonsils and those with insufficient testing to diagnose infectious mononucleosis were excluded. MAIN FINDINGS: One hundred patients were included in the study; 15 had a peritonsillar abscess and 29 had an intratonsillar abscess. Four of the patients with a peritonsillar abscess (26.7%) had a positive Monospot or Epstein-Barr virus IgM result, and two of 15 (13.3%) had positive rapid strep or culture results. Of the 29 patients with an intratonsillar abscess, eight (27.6%) had a positive Monospot or Epstein-Barr virus IgM result while two (6.9%) had a positive rapid strep or culture result. Of those with bilateral intratonsillar abscess, five of 12 (41.7%) patients showed laboratory markers for infectious mononucleosis compared with three of 17 (17.6%) with unilateral intratonsillar abscess. This difference was not statistically significant (Fischer's, p = 0.218). CONCLUSION: In our cohort of patients undergoing computed tomography scan and acute infectious mononucleosis testing, patients with intratonsillar and peritonsillar abscess tested positive for mononucleosis markers more commonly than for streptococcus markers. Recognizing uncomplicated intratonsillar and peritonsillar abscess in the setting of infectious mononucleosis in these pediatric patients may help tailor management in this population.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a respiratory disorder caused by the obstruction of the upper airway during sleep. The most common cause of pediatric OSA is adenotonsillar hypertrophy. Adenotonsillectomy is the first-line treatment for pediatric OSA; however, OSA persists in a significant number of patients due, in part, to the method of evaluating enlarged adenoids and tonsil tissue. The reason for these effects on OSA severity is not clear. This study aimed to establish a method to diagnose the need for adenoidectomy or tonsillectomy. METHODS: Twenty-seven Japanese children (mean age 6.6 years) participated in this study, undergoing polysomnography and computed tomography examination. Pharyngeal airway morphology (adenoids and tonsil tissue size, volume, and cross-sectional area [CSA]) and pressure on the upper airway were evaluated at each site using computational fluid dynamic analysis. RESULTS: Apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) showed a strong linear association with maximum negative pressure (Pmax) (AHI = -0.055* events/h Pmax -1.326, R² = .805). The relationship between minimum CSA (CSAmin) and Pmax was represented by an inversely proportional fitted curve (Pmax = -4797/CSAmin -5.1, R² = .507). The relationship between CSAmin and AHI was also represented by an inversely proportional fitted curve (AHI = 301.6 events/h/CSAmin1.22, R² = .680). Pmax greatly increased if CSAmin became ≤ 30 mm². The negative pressure of each site increased when CSA measured ≤ 50 mm². CONCLUSIONS: In children, when the CSA for each site is ≤ 50 mm², AHI is likely to be elevated, and the patient may require tonsillectomy or adenoidectomy.

RESUMO

Cardiac metastasis from head and neck cancer is an extremely rare and devastating condition with an abysmal prognosis. Most of our knowledge about this condition is from case reports and series. We present a case of squamous cell carcinoma of the tonsils that was complicated by embolic stroke and critical limb ischemia that were found to be secondary to intracardiac metastasis. We believe that this condition is under-reported; hence, we conducted a thorough review of the literature to highlight the characteristics and previous therapeutic experiences with various presentations of cardiac metastasis from head and neck carcinoma. Clinicians are encouraged to report their experience with evaluating and managing this type of metastasis.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to detect the prevalence of soft tissue calcifications in the head and neck using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and to determine their clinical importance. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Soft tissue calcifications in the head and neck region were retrospectively evaluated in 1557 CBCT images obtained between 2013 and 2015. The findings were categorized as follows: tonsillolith (calcified tonsil), carotid artery calcification (CAC), sialolith (salivary stone), calcified triticeous cartilage (CTC), calcified lymph node (CLN), rhinolith, antrolith, calcification of the superior cornu of the thyroid cartilage (CSCTC), calcified stylohyoid ligaments (CSL), myositis ossifican, osteoma cutis, and intracranial calcification. A Chi-square test was performed for categorical variables. In the 1557 CBCT images, 520 (33.4%) contained had at least one soft tissue calcification in the head and neck region. RESULTS: Tonsilloliths (18.8%) were the most prevalent soft tissue calcification, followed by CTC (5.8%), CAC (4.3%), intracranial calcifications (3.9%), CSL (3.7%), CSCTC (2.1%), osteoma cutis (1%), sialoliths (0.7%), antroliths (0.5%), myositis ossificans (0.4%), rhinoliths, and CLN (0.2%). CONCLUSION: There was a high prevalence of soft tissue calcifications in the head and neck region on CBCT images. Tonsilloliths were the most common type of calcification. CBCT imaging may aid the diagnosis and assessment of these calcifications.

BACKGROUND: Information about the normal [F-18]2-fluoro-2-deoxyglucose (FDG) uptake in the adenoids and palatine tonsils in children is not available. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to report the range of standardized uptake values (SUVs) in the normal adenoids and palatine tonsils in children, assess for the degree of asymmetry between the right and left tonsils and evaluate for the correlation of SUVs between the adenoids and tonsils. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Pediatric patients who had had an FDG positron emission tomography (PET)/magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) brain study in our institution from January 2018 to March 2019 were identified. Patients with a history of malignancy, adenoidectomy and/or tonsillectomy, incomplete imaging coverage of Waldeyer ring and the presence of artifact on PET/MRI were excluded. Two pediatric radiologists independently measured the mean and maximum SUVs of the right tonsil, left tonsil and the adenoids. Range, mean and standard deviation were calculated for all measurements. Ratios of SUV of the left to right tonsils and the adenoids to the tonsils were calculated. The paired t-test and Pearson's correlation test were used for statistical analysis with a P-value <0.05 considered to be significant. RESULTS: Sixty-one PET/MRI brain scans were performed in our institution during the study period. After reviewing for exclusion criteria, 41 patients were included in the study (mean age: 10.1 years, range: 2-17 years; 19 boys and 22 girls). The mean SUV was 5.30±1.57 in the right tonsil, 5.25±1.53 in the left tonsil and 4.56±1.90 in the adenoids. The maximum SUV was 8.47±2.22 in the right tonsil, 8.45±2.18 in the left tonsil and 7.59±2.94 in the adenoids. The difference between the SUVs of the right and left tonsil was not statistically significant (P=0.69 for mean SUV and P=0.90 for maximum SUV). There was a statistically significant moderately positive correlation between the FDG uptake in the adenoids and the right and left tonsil for both mean and maximum SUV (r=0.36-0.41; P=0.008-0.022). CONCLUSION: There is a wide variation of FDG uptake in the normal tonsils and adenoids in children. Uptake in the right and left tonsils is not significantly different. There is a moderately positive correlation between the FDG uptake in the adenoids and the tonsils.

PURPOSE: The objective of this study is to analyse the relationship between the endoscopic signs of laryngo-pharyngeal reflux, the lingual tonsil hypertrophy (LTH) and its inflammation, adopting Narrow Band Imaging (NBI) technology. METHODS: We enrolled, as cases, patients with clinical diagnosis of laryngopharyngeal reflux disease (LPRD), a Reflux Symptom Index (RSI) ≥ 13, and a Reflux Finding Score (RFS) ≥ 7. Controls were enrolled among patients who underwent the same transnasal endoscopy, equipped with NBI, with a RSI < 13 and a RFS < 7. Nasopharynx, Lingual Tonsils (LT), Hypopharynx and Larynx were evaluated by two experienced otolaryngologists, who calculated the Reflux Finding Scale (RFS) score and focused their attention on the base of the tongue, observing its surface with NBI technology. RESULTS: 82 patients with diagnosis of laryngopharyngeal reflux were enrolled as cases. Mean RFS was 11.7 (SD = 2.9). As controls, we enrolled 80 patients. Mean RFS was 2.7 (SD = 1.63). We found that RFS positivity was associated with a significant increase in LT dimension (2.5 vs 1.1, p < 0.001), with a higher LT crypt inflammation grading (1.8 vs 0.09, p < 0.001) and with a higher Roman Cobblestone pattern grading (1.48 vs 0.11, p < 0.001). A significant correlation between the crypt inflammation and the hyperemia subscore of RFS was present (r = 0.696, p < 0.0001), while it was not possible to find a correlation between crypt inflammation and either diffuse laryngeal edema (r = 0.166, p = 0.135) and posterior commissure hypertrophy (r = 0.089, p = 0.427). CONCLUSIONS: NBI allowed us to identify endoscopically the presence of enlarged lingual tonsil, crypt inflammation and superficial mucosal changes, in patients affected by LPRD. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: 2 (prospective, case-control study).
