RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Cancer patients have high supportive care needs related to the nature of the disease and treatment methods. To meet these needs or reduce symptoms, patients can be expected to resort to alternative treatment methods. AIM: To examine the relationship between the supportive care needs of cancer patients and their attitudes toward complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study involving 289 cancer patients at the Oncology Hospital in east of Turkey. Short-Form Supportive Care Needs Survey Questionnaire (SCNS-SF 29) and Holistic Complementary and Alternative Medicine Questionnaire (HCAMQ) were standard instruments used for data collection. The association between supportive care needs and attitude toward CAM was determined. RESULTS: The mean age of the study participants was 56.7 ± 12.7 years. There were 180 females (62.3%) and 109 males (37.7%). The mean score of the SCNS-SF 29 of the study participant was 101.19 ± 33.97. It was found that the patients' psychological needs were the highest, followed by health services and information, daily life, and sexuality needs, respectively. The mean score of the HCAMQ was 27.16 ± 9.54. There was a weak, significant negative correlation between HCAM and psychological supportive care needs (r: -0.240, P: 0.003). However, there was no significant relationship between needs related to health services information, daily life sexuality, and attitudes toward CAM. CONCLUSIONS: Cancer patients have high supportive care requirements. Those with high psychological needs have a positive attitude toward HCAM. Incorporation of HCAM in the care of cancer patients may improve their quality of care.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment are increasing in current public healthcare programs. An improved resolution multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has shown the potential to enhance the detection and differentiation of this medical condition. In this study, MR perfusion parameters were investigated in different ages and diseases to differentiate clinically significant prostate cancer. PATIENTS AND METHODS: From January 2017 to December 2022, 72 consecutive patients, who had undergone multiparametric MR imaging were enrolled in this study. Four different patient groups were formed: (1) those with prostate cancer, (2) those with prostatitis, (3) those with benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH), and (4) a control group. Quantitative dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE)-MRI pharmacokinetic parameters included Ktrans, Kep, Ve, and iAUG. Different measurements were obtained from both the peripheral and transitional zones (PZ and TZ, respectively). Means values were compared between groups based on a univariate analysis. RESULTS: Ktrans and Kep values in the PZ were found to be statistically significantly lower in the control group (p = 0. 003 and p = 0. 011, respectively). It was seen that Ktrans and Ve measurements obtained from PZ had a statistically significant determinant in detecting malignancy (p = 0. 013 and p = 0. 036, respectively). It was seen that Ktrans, Ve, and iAUG obtained from the TZ showed a statistically significant difference in prostate cancer (p = 0.025, p = 0.005, and p = 0. 011, respectively) in contrast to other cases. Peripheral Ve values were statistically significantly lower than those measured Ve values from the TZ in prostate cancer cases (p = 0.002) in contrast to the other cases. CONCLUSIONS: Quantitative DCE-MRI parameters may vary according to age, disease, and zonal anatomy. These differences may contribute to the diagnosis of clinically relevant prostate cancer.

RESUMO

Purpose: The study aimed to compare four irrigation methods for triple antibiotic paste (TAP) removal using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) analysis. Materials and methods: Forty bovine central incisor teeth were selected, and the root canals were prepared up to #6 Peeso reamer drills. Equal portions of metronidazole, ciprofloxacin, and minocycline were used for the TAP preparation. The TAP was prepared by mixing the powder with distilled water (with a powder to liquid ratio of 1 mg/1 mL). The TAP was introduced to the canals with a lentulo spiral; then, the access cavities were temporarily sealed. After 21 days of storage, the teeth were randomly divided into four equal groups according to irrigation techniques: open-ended, side-vented, double side-vented needle irrigations and EndoActivator irrigation device. The TAP was removed using 17% EDTA (20 mL) and distilled water (5 mL) for all of the groups. The volume of the intracanal medicament before and after the irrigation procedure was recorded by scanning the samples with micro-CT, and the TAP percentage was calculated. The percentages obtained from each group were compared using ANOVA. The significance level was set at p<0.05. Results: The results showed that there was no statistically significant difference among the TAP percentage volumes removed by the different irrigation techniques. Conclusion: The irrigation techniques used in this study showed similar TAP removal efficiency, however, they could not completely remove the TAP from the root canal systems.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Early onset bacterial sepsis in neonates (EOS) is recognized as an important health condition. Early diagnosis is crucial. However, blood culture results are released in 48-72 hours. Many biomarkers have been investigated but none have been accepted as the gold standard. This study aimed to investigate the diagnostic value of the molecules: soluble form of triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells-1 (sTREM-1), pentraxin-3 (PTX-3) and pro adrenomedullin (pro-ADM) in EOS and compare with currently used biomarkers. METHODS: In this multicenter prospective study, patients were enrolled from different NICUs around the Turkey. Patient data were collected via web-based registry system from attending centers. Neonates, hospitalized with a suspicion of EOS were enrolled. Blood culture and routine blood tests were collected and a serum sample was obtained and kept in - 80°C for studying the molecules. According to laboratory results, patients were divided into three groups as; proven sepsis, clinical sepsis and control group. Groups were compared in terms of demographic, clinical and laboratory findings. The primary outcome of the study was to assess any difference between groups in terms of the diagnostic value of the markers aforementioned. RESULTS: A total of 130 patients were enrolled; proven sepsis (n = 36), clinical sepsis (n = 53) and control (n = 41) groups. Groups were similar in terms of demographic findings; mean WBC (P = 0.445), procalcitonin (PCT) (P = 0.083) and IL-6 (P = 0.814) levels. Mean C-reactive protein (CRP) level was significantly higher in clinical sepsis and proven sepsis groups compared to control group (P < 0.001). Mean PTX-3 (P = 0.547), pro-ADM (P = 0.766) and sTREM-1 (P = 0.838) levels were similar between groups. CONCLUSION: These promising molecules failed to help in early diagnosis of EOS. Their relation to correlation with disease progression may make more sense as they seem to be expressed in higher amounts with the progression of the disease in previous studies. CRP was the most frequently used biomarker for detecting the sepsis in our study population.

RESUMO

AIMS: Our aim was to compare three different voxel sizes of CBCT images for the determination of residual filling material volume in root canals when compared with micro CT. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty-two root canals of 14 extracted human maxillary molar teeth were retreated by using ProFile® instruments. Images were obtained after retreatment by using ProMax 3D Max CBCT at 3 different voxel sizes (1) High resolution (0.1 mm); (2) High definition (0.15 mm); and (3) Normal resolution (0.2 mm). Two observers measured volumes of residual filling materials in exported CBCT images by means of 3D Doctor Software. Micro CT measurements were served as gold standard. Mann-Whitney U test and Wilcoxon Test were used for the comparison of CBCT and micro CT measurements. Statistical significance was set at P < 0.05. RESULTS: No statistically differences were found between the two observers for all measurements (P > 0.05). There were no significant differences among different CBCT voxel sizes used (0.1 mm, 0.15 mm, and 0.2 mm) (P > 0.05). The Spearman correlation coefficients between CBCT at different voxel sizes significantly highly correlated with micro CT measurements for each observer (P < 0.05). Furthermore, no significant differences were found between the measurements obtained by the two observers in consideration to root canal location (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: CBCT images may provide useful information in the volumetric assessment of the amount of residual filling material in root canals for retreatment procedures.

RESUMO

Mean platelet (PLT) activation has an important role in the development of vascular diseases. In this study, we aimed to investigate the PLT volume in patients with vasculogenic and nonvasculogenic erectile dysfunction (ED) and compare it with the control group. Mean PLT volume (MPV) levels were measured in 50 patients with vasculogenic ED, in 30 patients who developed ED after radical prostatectomy (nonvasculogenic) and in 40 healthy controls. Ages were similar between the three groups. The diagnosis of ED was based on detailed sexual history, physical examination, laboratory assessment and color Doppler ultrasonography and is defined as the inability to attain or maintain a penile erection that is sufficient for successful vaginal intercourse. The results are given as mean ± s.d. of the mean. The mean age of the patients with vasculogenic ED, of patients with ED after radical prostatectomy and of the control group were 53.70 ± 12.39 (range 24-77), 54.60 ± 11.40 (range 43-61) and 53.85 ± 9.5 (range 30-73), respectively (P = 0.853). The MPV and PLT values were significantly higher in patients with vasculogenic ED than in patients with ED after radical prostatectomy and in control groups: 7.49 ± 1.4, 6.43 ± 1.19 and 6.85 ± 1.2 for MPV and 262.97 ± 68, 251.77 ± 78 and 252.89 ± 82 for PLT values, respectively (P = 0.033). The MPV and PLT values were not statistically significant in postprostatectomy ED patients and in control groups (P = 0.663). There was no significant difference among the three groups in terms of white blood cells and hemoglobin levels. PLT count and mean PLT volume were detected to be increased in patients with vasculogenic ED. This finding may suggest a role for PLT volume in the pathogenesis of vasculogenic ED.

RESUMO

QUESTIONS UNDER STUDY: Paraoxonase-1 (PON1) is an HDL-bound enzyme system which plays a key role in the protection of LDL and HDL from oxidation by hydrolysing activated phospholipids and lipid peroxide products. Oxidative stress has been involved in the pathogenesis of many complications of human pregnancy, including early pregnancy failure (EPF), preeclampsia and preterm labour. The purpose of this study was to determine serum paraoxonase/arylesterase activities and lipid hydroperoxide (LOOH) levels as an oxidative stress indicator in women with EPF. METHOD: Paraoxonase/arylesterase activities and LOOH levels were assessed in women with EPF (n = 40) and healthy continuum pregnant women without EPF (n = 38) before 12 weeks' gestation. Serum basal and salt-stimulated paraoxonase/arylesterase activities were measured spectrophotometrically. LOOH levels were measured by ferrous oxidation with a xylenol orange assay. Student's t-test and the Pearson correlation were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: We found that basal and salt-stimulated paraoxonase/arylesterase activities were significantly lower in women with EPF than in women without EPF (all p <0.05), while LOOH levels were significantly higher (p = 0.009). CONCLUSION: Our study showed that decreased paraoxonase/arylesterase activities and increased LOOH levels may play a role in ethiopathogenesis through increased susceptibility to lipid peroxidation in women with EPF.

RESUMO

PURPOSE OF INVESTIGATION: Serum paraoxonase (PON 1) is one of the most important enzymatic antioxidants that hydrolyzes lipid peroxidation, an indicator of carcinogenic activity. The aim of this study was to compare the serum levels of paraoxonase and arylesterase activity in patients with endometrial cancer to those of healthy controls. METHODS: Serum paraoxonase and arylesterase activities, total free sulphydryl (-SH) groups and lipid hydroperoxide (LOOH) levels were measured in patients with endometrial cancer (n = 20) and controls (n = 23). RESULTS: Serum paraoxonase, arylesterase activities and total -SH group levels were significantly lower in patients compared to controls (p < 0.05, p < 0.05 and p < 0.001; respectively), while LOOH levels were significantly higher (p < 0.001). Among patients, serum paraoxonase and arylesterase activities were inversely correlated with LOOH levels (r = -0.680, p < 0.05; r = -0.708, p < 0.001; respectively), while these were positively correlated with the total -SH group (r = 0.526, p < 0.05; r = 0.508, p < 0.05; respectively). CONCLUSION: Reduced serum PON 1 activity might contribute to an impaired antioxidant defense system which plays a critical role in carcinogenesis in patients with endometrial cancer.
