RESUMO

Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are substances commonly used in the production of various everyday objects, including among others kitchen dishes, cosmetics, or clothes. They penetrate to the environment and living organisms causing disturbances in the functioning of many internal organs and systems. Due to environmental pollution, wildlife is also exposed to PFASs, but the knowledge about this issue is rather limited. The aim of this study was to evaluate the exposure of wild greater mouse-eared bats (Myotis myotis), living in Poland, to six selected PFASs: five perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (perfluorobutanoic acid-PFBuA, perfluoropentanoic acid-PFPeA, perfluorohexanoic acid-PFHxA, perfluoroheptanoic acid-PFHpA, perfluorooctanoic acid-PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) through the analysis of guano samples with liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS-MS) method. To our knowledge this is the first study concerning the PFASs levels in bats, as well as using guano samples to evaluate the exposure of wild mammals to these substances. A total of 40 guano samples were collected from 4 bats summer (nursery) colonies located in various parts of Poland. The presence of PFASs mentioned were detected in all colonies studied, and concentration levels of these substances were sampling dependent. The highest concentration levels were observed in the case of PFPeA [1.34 and 3060 ng/g dry weight (dw)] and PFHxA (8.30-314 ng/g dw). This study confirms the exposure of wild bats to PFASs.

RESUMO

The main difficulties when analyzing pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) in solid environmental samples is the complexity of the samples and the low concentration levels of such pollutants. Most efforts are focused in achieving good analytical performance parameters such as high recoveries or low detection limits without considering if the methods are environmentally friendly. In this work, the main tools proposed for assessing the greenness of analytical methodologies (Analytical Eco-scale, Green Analytical Procedure Index (GAPI), and Analytical GREEnness metric (AGREE)) have been applied to nine analytical procedures that include recent important analytical tendencies. The three metrics identified the paper spray ionization method as the greenest procedure since it used untreated samples for direct mass spectrometry analysis. Using Analytical Eco-scale, most of the evaluated procedures were rated as "acceptable green". However, the use of internal standards resulted key in the environmental impact of the method which provided contradictory results versus other metrics. GAPI found greenness similarities between most of selected methods, hindering a greenness classification. AGREE allowed the weighting of each evaluation criterion providing a greenness ranking. The application of each metric detecting their weaknesses and strengths was discussed. The incorporation of validation analytical features in greenness metrics was a gap revealed.

RESUMO

There is increasing evidence that the presence of certain pharmaceuticals in the environment leads to biota exposure and constitute a potential risk for ecosystems. Bioaccumulation is an essential focus of risk assessment to evaluate at what degree emerging contaminants are a hazard both to the environment and the individuals that inhabit it. The main goals of the present review are 1) to summarize and describe the research and factors that should be taken into account in the evaluation of bioaccumulation of pharmaceuticals in aquatic organisms; and 2) to provide a database and a critical review of the bioaccumulation/bioconcentration factors (BAF or BCF) of these compounds in organisms of different trophic levels. Most studies fall into one of two categories: laboratory-scale absorption and purification tests or field studies and, to a lesser extent, large-scale, semi-natural system tests. Although in the last 5 years there has been considerable progress in this field, especially in species of fish and molluscs, research is still limited on other aquatic species like crustaceans or algae. This revision includes >230 bioconcentration factors (BCF) and >530 bioaccumulation factors (BAF), determined for 113 pharmaceuticals. The most commonly studied is the antidepressant group, followed by diclofenac and carbamazepine. There is currently no reported accumulation data on certain compounds, such as anti-cancer drugs. BCFs are highly influenced by experimental factors (notably the exposure level, time or temperature). Field BAFs are superior to laboratory BCFs, highlighting the importance of field studies for reliable assessments and in true environmental conditions. BAF data appears to be organ, species and compound-specific. The potential impact on food web transfer is also considered. Among different aquatic species, lower trophic levels and benthic organisms exhibit relatively higher uptake of these compounds.

RESUMO

Parental stress is a construct related to people's perception of difficulties and feelings of not being able to cope with the demands of parenting. This construct is often experienced as a negative or aversive response to parental obligations, and the available evidence also suggests that excessive parenting stress reduces the use of positive parenting behaviors and are related to dysfunctional parenting. Different instruments exist to assess parental stress. This article is part of a project to translate and adapt the Parenting Stress Index (PSI), fourth edition, in its two forms (full and short). The aim of this research is to identify the psychometric indicators obtained by this instrument and to review the evidence they can provide. METHOD: Following the PRISMA guide (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses), the studies related to the PSI were identified in different databases (ERIC, PsycArticles, PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science). RESULTS: The screening process resulted in 16 articles; four have analyzed the psychometric properties of the PSI-4 and the rest have studied the PSI-3. Although version 4 was published in 2012, the studies are scarce. However, they follow the line noted in the previous short version, a high internal consistency and a factor structure of three factors. CONCLUSIONS: The difficulties of working with a measurement instrument with 101 items means that the full version of the PSI has been little studied, except in translation and linguistic adaptation studies.

RESUMO

The university provides academic support to disabled students, however, few institutions provide academic, extra-academic or preventive support to students with Autism Spectrum Disorders High-Functioning (ASD-HF). Among the most commonly requested needs is support for coping with anxiety arising from academic and social activity itself. When planning an intervention program, it is necessary to screen those who have problems and are likely to benefit from such a program. In this article we propose a systematic search for measures of anxiety for young people and adults with ASD-HF. Of a total of 683 documents, only 7 met the selection criteria. Of these, a total of 35 tools were detected, of which only 11 mediated anxiety. Screening should be carried out for all students, so that we can detect the "risk" of anxiety disturbance in all cases and, in particular, in students with ASD-HF. However, the instruments eligible for assessing intervention outcomes should be agreed upon in order to be able to compare results from different trials.

RESUMO

Poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are a large group of chemicals commonly used in various branches of industry, which may adversely affect the living organisms. The aim of this study were to evaluate exposure of dogs to six selected PFASs: five perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (perfluorobutanoic acid - PFBuA, perfluoropentanoic acid - PFPeA, perfluorohexanoic acid - PFHxA, perfluoroheptanoic acid - PFHpA, perfluorooctanoic acid - PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) through the analysis of fur samples. To our knowledge this is the first study concerning the use of fur samples to evaluation of exposure of domestic animals to PFASs. Relationship between PFASs concentration and age, gender and body weight of animals was also evaluated. Fur samples were collected from 30 dogs living in Olsztyn (Poland). All PFASs studied were detected in the canine fur samples. The highest concentrations were observed in the case of PFOA and PFBuA, detected at concentrations in the range between 1.51 and 66.7 ng/g and 0.98-26.6 ng/g, respectively. During the present study generally no statistically significant differences dependent on gender, age and body weight of animals were found. This study confirms the suitability of fur samples for biomonitoring of exposure to PFASs in domestic animals, what may be important in veterinary toxicology.

RESUMO

In April 1998, 6 million m3 of acid water and sludge were accidently spilled on to the Guadiamar riverbed (South of Spain). In this study, the long term distribution of Al, Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, and Zn in the sediments of the Guadiamar river basin is described using fractionation analysis. Changes in the availability of metals from 2002 to 2018, covering a period of 20 years after the dam collapse, have been evaluated and their potential environmental risks have been examined. A substantial decrease in the concentrations of all the metals studied was observed, except Pb. However, the concentrations of Cu, Zn, and Pb remained higher than the background concentrations, which indicates a high influence of the mining activity, even in 2018. An increase of the residual fraction was observed from 2002 (47%) to 2018 (67%), which was mainly due to the mobilisation of metals from their oxidisable fraction to their residual fraction. Environmental risk assessment revealed a significant decrease in the risk associated with metals from 2002 to 2018, mainly due to the decrease of the metals concentration in the sediments over the year and to the lower availability of these metals in 2018. In 2002, the most challenging metals were Pb and Zn, whereas in 2018, Zn and Cd were the most problematic due to their toxicity and availability.

RESUMO

Population is continuously exposed to endocrine disrupting compounds present in everyday products such as parabens, bisphenol A (BPA), and perfluoroalkyl compounds (PFCs). The aims of this study were, first, to evaluate human exposure to three parabens (methylparaben (MeP), ethylparaben (EtP) and propylparaben (PrP)), BPA and six PFCs (perfluorobutanoic acid, perfluoropentanoic acid, perfluorohexanoic acid, perfluoroheptanoic acid (PFHpA), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS)) through the analysis of hair samples from children, women and men and, then, to evaluate possible relationships between pollutant concentration in hair and age, gender, smoking and dyeing habits or hair colour. Hair samples were collected from 42 volunteers from Seville (Spain) (10 children, 16 women and 16 men). Six of the monitored pollutants (MeP, EtP, PrP, BPA, PFHpA and PFOS) were detected in at least 76% of the samples analysed. The highest concentrations and frequency of detection (100% of the samples) corresponded to MeP and PrP (up to 14,187 and 9009 ng/g, respectively). BPA was found in 83% of the samples at concentrations in the range from 24 to 1427 ng/g whereas PFCs were detected at concentrations in the range from 0.6 to 15.5 ng/g, being PFHpA and PFOS the ones most frequently detected (86% and 76%, respectively). Concentrations of BPA and parabens in adults were statistically higher than those in children. The results of this study reveal the suitability of hair for biomonitoring endocrine disrupting compounds of high concern (PFCs, parabens and BPA) to which population is internally or/and externally but continuously exposed.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To analyze changes in MRI diagnostic accuracy in main rectal tumor (T) evaluation resulting from the use of diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), according to the degree of experience of the radiologist. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study of a database including one hundred 1.5 T MRI records (2011-2016) from patients with biopsy-proven rectal cancer, including primary staging and post-chemoradiotherapy follow-up. All cases were individually blindedly reviewed by ten radiologists: three experienced in rectal cancer, three specialized in other areas, and four residents. Each case was assessed twice to detect perirectal infiltration: first, evaluating just high-resolution T2-weighted sequences (HRT2w); second, evaluation of DWI plus HRT2w sequences. Results were pooled by experience, calculating accuracy (area under ROC curve), sensitivity and specificity, predictive values, likelihood ratios, and overstaging/understaging. Histology of surgical specimens provided the reference standard. RESULTS: DWI significantly improved specificity by experienced radiologists in primary staging (63.2% to 75.9%) and, to a lesser extent, positive likelihood ratio (2.06 to 2.87); minimal changes were observed post-chemoradiotherapy, with a slight decrease of accuracy (0.657 to 0.626). Inexperienced radiologists showed a similar pattern, but with slight enhancement post-chemoradiotherapy (accuracy 0.604 to 0.621). Residents experienced small changes, with increased sensitivity/decreased specificity in both primary (69% to 72%/67.2% to 64.7%) and post-chemoradiotherapy (68.1% to 73.6%/47.3% to 44.6%) staging. CONCLUSIONS: Adding DWI to HRT2w significantly improved specificity for the detection of perirectal infiltration at primary staging by experienced radiologists and also by inexperienced ones, although to a lesser extent. In the post-neoadjuvant treatment subgroup, only minimal changes were observed.

RESUMO

In this study, the activity concentrations of 210Po and 210Pb were determined in different types of bivalve molluscs sampled during the period of May 2014-June 2015 along the Andalusian littoral. Radioactivity concentrations of 210Po were determined through alpha-particle spectrometry using 209Po as an internal tracer. Radioactivity concentrations of 210Pb were determined through low-level gamma-ray spectrometry. The activity concentrations of 210Po and 210Pb varied between 40 ±â€¯2 and 515 ±â€¯9 Bq kg-1 dry weight (d.w.), and ND (lower than limit of detection) and 73 ±â€¯10 Bq kg-1 d.w., respectively. The committed effective dose to humans was calculated to range from 39 to 477 µSv year-1. Radioactivity and dose levels were compared with previous studies from other countries.

RESUMO

Guadiamar River is located in the southwest of the Iberian Peninsula and connects two protected areas in the South of Spain: Sierra Morena and Doñana National Park. It is sited in an area affected by urban, industrial and agriculture sewage pollution and with tradition on intensive mining activities. Most of the studies performed in this area have been mainly focused on the presence of heavy metals and, until now, little is known about the occurrence of other contaminants such as emerging organic pollutants (EOPs). In this work, an analytical method has been optimized and validated for monitoring of forty-seven EOPs in surface water. The analytical method has been applied to study the distribution and environmental risk of these pollutants in Guadiamar River basin. The analytical method was based on solid-phase extraction and determination by liquid chromatography-triple quadrupole-tandem mass spectrometry. The 60 % of the target compounds were found in the analyzed samples. The highest concentrations were found for two plasticizers (bisphenol A and di(2-ethyhexyl)phthalate, mean concentration up to 930 ng/L) and two pharmaceutical compounds (caffeine (up to 623 ng/L) and salicylic acid (up to 318 ng/L)). This study allowed to evaluate the potential sources (industrial or urban) of the studied compounds and the spatial distribution of their concentrations along the river. Environmental risk assessment showed a major risk on the south of the river, mainly due to discharges of wastewater effluents.

RESUMO

In this work, the distribution and the ecotoxicological risk of sixteen pharmaceutically active compounds belonging to seven different therapeutic groups (five anti-inflammatory drugs, two antibiotics, an anti-epileptic drug, a ß-blocker, a nervous stimulant, four estrogens and two lipid regulators) have been studied in sewage sludge from wastewater treatment plants. Only three of the sixteen pharmaceutical compounds were never detected in sludge while eleven of the studied pharmaceuticals were still detected in compost. Mean concentration levels of the pharmaceutically active compounds ranged between 24.9 and 4105 µg/kg dm, 14.5-944 µg/kg dm, 3.29-636 µg/kg dm and 9.19-974 µg/kg dm in primary, secondary, digested sludge and compost, respectively. An increase in the concentration levels of most of the pharmaceuticals was observed from summer to winter (mean values in primary and secondary sludge were 304 and 85.1 µg/kg dm in summer and 435 and 175 µg/kg dm in winter, respectively) probably due to an increase of their consumption during the coldest season and a reduction of the microbial activity under colder temperatures. The highest ecotoxicological risk, in digested sludge and compost, was due to the estrogenic compound 17ß-estradiol. The ecotoxicological risk significantly decreased after the application of digested sludge or compost to the soils (risk quotient values ranged between 0.04 and 252 in digested sludge and 0.002-37.8 in compost and decreased to 8·10(-4)-1.92 in digested sludge-amended soil and 1·10(-4)-0.23 in compost-amended soil).

RESUMO

Doñana National Park (Southern Spain) is one of the most emblematic protected areas in Europe and is included in UNESCO's World Heritage List. A 1-year monitoring study was carried out to investigate the presence of 16 pharmaceutical compounds belonging to seven therapeutic groups in wastewater discharges, rivers and streams affecting Doñana Park. Fourteen pharmaceuticals were detected in effluent wastewater at concentration levels up to 26.8 µg L(-1) and thirteen were detected in surface water at concentration levels up to 4.55 µg L(-1). Ibuprofen was the compound at the highest concentration levels. An increase of the concentration levels in surface water was observed in summer months due to the reduction of the flow rates of the rivers. Nevertheless, risk quotient values estimated in surface water were lower than one so no toxicological effect is suspected to occur. The highest average risk quotients were obtained for ibuprofen (risk quotient 0.67±0.28), gemfibrozil (risk quotient 0.52±0.33), propranolol (0.13±0.06) and naproxen (0.10±0.09). Nevertheless, in summer months, risk quotient values up to 9.3 and 10.7 were estimated for the estrogenic compounds 17α-ethinylestradiol and 17ß-estradiol.
