OBJECTIVE: This study aims to assess the knowledge and perceptions of the public toward migraine in Saudi Arabia. METHODS: This cross-sectional survey assessed the knowledge and perceptions of migraine among Saudi Arabian individuals. The study was conducted over three months in 2023 (1st of June 2023 to 31st of August 2023) using a prevalidated online questionnaire divided into four sections. RESULTS: A total of 1,975 adults aged between 18 and 64 completed the web-based survey. Of these, over half were male (n = 1,268; 64.2%). The main causes of migraine identified by the participants were genetic disease (n = 540, 27.3%), followed by physical disease (n = 341, 17.3%), head trauma (n = 274, 13.9%), and psychiatric disease (n = 157, 7.9%). The main symptoms identified by the participants were photophobia (21%), followed by inability to control urine (14.1%), vomiting and nausea (13.8%), and vision loss (8.3%). The majority of the participants in this study had a good knowledge of migraines, while 49% had poor knowledge. The migraine knowledge score was significantly associated with the participants' gender (p = 0.002), age (p = 0.0001), educational level (p = 0.001), employment status (p = 0.001), monthly income (p = 0.0001), region (p = 0.0001), and history of migraine (p = 0.0001). CONCLUSION: Although one-third of the participants exhibiting good knowledge, deficiencies existed in certain clinical aspects, emphasizing the need for targeted educational interventions to enhance public awareness and understanding of migraines.

Assessing water quality in arid regions is vital due to scarce resources, impacting health and sustainable management.This study examines groundwater quality in Assuit Governorate, Egypt, using Principal Component Analysis, GIS, and Machine Learning Techniques. Data from 217 wells across 12 parameters were analyzed, including TDS, EC, Cl-, Fe++, Ca++, Mg++, Na+, SO4--, Mn++, HCO3-, K+, and pH. The Water Quality Index (WQI) was calculated, and ArcGIS mapped its spatial distribution. Machine learning algorithms, including Ridge Regression, XGBoost, Decision Tree, Random Forest, and K-Nearest Neighbors, were used for predictive analysis. Higher concentrations of Na, K, Ca, Mg, Mn, and Fe were correlated with industrial and densely populated areas. Most samples exhibited excellent or good quality, with a small percentage unsuitable for consumption. Ridge Regression showed the lowest MAPE rates (0.22 % training, 0.26 % in testing). This research highlights the importance of advanced machine learning for sustainable groundwater management in arid regions. Thus, our results could provide valuable assistance to both national and local authorities involved in water management decisions, particularly for water resource managers and decision-makers. This information can aid in the development of regulations aimed at safeguarding and sustainably managing groundwater resources, which are essential for the overall prosperity of the country.

This study primarily investigates the natural radioactivity level in alkaline rocks collected from the Wadi El-Dib ring complex (WDRC) in North Eastern Desert of Egypt, and assesses potential health risks associated with their use as decorative building materials. The work was accomplished using a high-purity germanium detector as well as ICP-MS and ICP-AES techniques. The WDRC composed essentially of trachyte, quartz syenite, granite and syenite. Geochemically, these rocks contain high SiO2 and alkalis with metaluminous to slightly peraluminous features. All rocks contain high concentrations of rare earth elements (∑REEs = 109-1075 ppm), with clear enrichment in light REEs compared to heavy REEs [(La/Yb)N = 8.3-25.3. Radiometrically, the concentrations of the natural radioisotopes (238U, 232Th, and 40K) in the studied rock types surpassed the worldwide average values assigned for building materials by UNSCEAR. This elevation of the radioisotope concentration values is due to the presence of supplement minerals such as monazite, zircon, allanite, and rutile. Granites exhibit the highest mean concentrations of 238U (av. 164.24 ± 14.76 Bq/kg) and 232Th (av. 214.37 ± 23.33 Bq/kg), while trachytes demonstrate the highest 40K (av. 1352.56 ± 65.56 Bq/kg) concentrations. In contrast, syenites exhibite the lowest mean concentrations for 238U (av. 54.51 ± 6.81 Bq/kg) and 232Th (av. 56.76 ± 6.25 Bq/kg), while quartz syenites display the lowest mean concentration of 40K (av. 1144.78 ± 96.19 Bq/kg). The radiogenic heat production (RHP) associated with U, Th, and K range between 1.41 to 9.33 µW/m3, exceeding the typical crustal mean value of 0.8 to 1.2 µW/m3. The radiological parameters and indices evaluating risks of the outdoor and indoor radiation doses due to the investigated rocks were assessed. The results indicated that these rocks meet globally accepted values and safety standards (approved by UNSCEAR, ICRP, and EC) for surface building materials, as well as they underscore the importance of adhering to safety protocols to safeguard workers from radiation exposure within the WDRC area. Ultimately, the data herein provide a valuable database for assessing the compatibility of geochemical data and natural radioactivity level in WDRC rocks. Additionally, it reveals that from the radiological perspective, the investigated rocks are considered safe for use as decorative construction materials.

The present study was carried out in the Harrat Khyber region of the Madinah province in Western Saudi Arabia. The objective of the study was to determine the main factors affecting groundwater chemistry and assess the impact of groundwater quality on human health with respect to nitrate, fluoride, and heavy metals (arsenic, chromium, copper, nickel, selenium, and zinc). Hydrochemical data for 70 groundwater samples from dug wells and bore wells from Harrat Khyber were interpreted to achieve the research objective. The groundwater chemistry is influenced by ion-exchange and the evaporation process. A wide variation in the concentration of various major ions is observed primarily due to the varied nature of the aquifer system which includes the unconsolidated wadi deposits, weathered-fractured basaltic aquifer system, and subbasaltic sedimentary aquifer system. The total hazard quotient (THQ) with respect to NO3 and F was determined. Although the F values are well within the limits of human consumption in water prescribed by WHO, the values of NO3 exceed the allowable limits in 50% of the groundwater samples. The average THQ values are 2.16, 2.92, and 2.34 for adults, children, and infants, respectively, which makes the water unsafe for human consumption. Six heavy metals (arsenic, chromium, copper, nickel, selenium, and zinc) were used to calculate the heavy-metal contamination index (HCI). The average HCI value is 19.505. Overall HCI calculation shows that the groundwater is unpolluted with respect to heavy metals. The heavy metals in water are mainly of geogenic origin.

Background Understanding the relationships between obesity and lifestyle factors is essential for the effective prevention and management of obesity in youth. This study aimed to investigate the association between sociodemographic factors, lifestyle elements such as physical activity and social stress, and the prevalence of overweight and obesity among Saudi adolescents in the Aseer region. Methodology From December 2022 to March 2023, we conducted a cross-sectional study using the multi-stage stratified random sampling technique. The study included Saudi male and female adolescents aged 12-19 years attending middle and high schools. Ordinal logistic regression was used to analyze the association between the ordinal dependent variable, classified into weight groups (normal, overweight, obese), and the independent variables. Results Of the total of 512 individuals, 90.4% were aged ≥18 years, 77.5% were males, and 76.8% were urban residents. Of the studied population, 33.6% were overweight, and 20.5% were obese. The prevalence of obesity and overweight was significantly higher among males compared to females (20.9% vs. 19.1% and 36.5% vs. 23.5%, respectively). Multivariate analysis revealed the following factors to be associated with obesity and overweight: female gender (2.31, 95% CI = 1.45-3.71), age 12-17 years (0.53, 95% CI = 0.28-0.97), place of delivery (Tanoma) (2.32, 95% CI = 1.13-4.75), family size of over eight members (0.43, 95% CI = 0.24-0.74), family monthly income of over 20,000 SAR (3.79, 95% CI = 1.38-11.35), being smokers (0.26, 95% CI = 1.31-2.93), experiencing social stress (1.96, 95% CI = 1.96-2.93), engagement in physical activity less than three times a week (0.49, 95% CI = 0.32-0.75), and engagement in physical activity more than three times a week (0.36, 95% CI = 0.22-0.58). Conclusions These findings emphasize the importance of addressing demographic, socioeconomic, and lifestyle factors in combating childhood and adolescent obesity through targeted interventions.

Objectives: In newborns, developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is an abnormal development of the hip joint but its accurate detection is challenging. This study was designed to determine an accurate detection of DDH and their associated risk factors in infants younger than 6 months using sonographic and clinical examinations. Methods: Infants younger than 6 months (n = 404) with their hip instability were recruited. Infants' hips were examined by ultrasonographic and clinical examinations. Ultrasonographic data were accessed in relation with the risk factors. Omni calculator was used to measure sensitivity, specificity and accuracy. Results: Out of 808 hips, 97.3% hips were categorized as Graf I type, 1.4% hips were Graf type IIa, 0.87% were type IIb, and 0.49% were type IIc. The data revealed that 93.9% hips were congruous and 6.1% hips were immature. Importantly, the data showed that risk factors such as mode of delivery, breech presentation, oligohydramnios, family history, and malformations were proportionally associated with positive DDH cases. Interestingly, the sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of ultrasonography in relation with clinical positivity of DDH infants were 51.83%, 99.43%, and 73.16%, respectively. Conclusions: This study proved that ultrasonographic assessments are highly sensitive, specific and accurate for the detection of DDH onset in infants younger than 6 months. In addition, the study investigated a number of risk factors associated with the onset of DDH; therefore, it is extremely important that ultrasonography and clinical examination should be performed by those sonographers and orthopedic surgeons, who will have the knowledge of associated risk factors.

The assessment of greenness of analytical protocols is of great importance now to preserve the environment. Some studies have analyzed either only the neurotransmitters, dopamine, serotonin, glutamate, and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), together or with other neurotransmitters and biomarkers. However, these methods have not been investigated for their greenness and were not compared with each other to find the optimum one. Therefore, this study aims to compare seven published chromatographic methods that analyzed the four neurotransmitters and their mixtures using the National Environmental Method Index, Analytical Eco-Scale Assessment (ESA), and Green Analytical Procedure Index (GAPI). As these methods cover both qualitative and quantitative aspects, they offer better transparency. Overall, GAPI showed maximum greenness throughout the analysis. Method 6 was proven to be the method of choice for analyzing the mixture, owing to its greenness, according to NEMI, ESA, and GAPI. Additionally, method 6 has a wide scope of application (13 components can be analyzed), high sensitivity (low LOQ values), and fast analysis (low retention times, especially for glutamate and GABA).
