PURPOSE: Young people spend a substantial proportion of their time at school sedentary; therefore, this setting represents an important target for interventions aimed at displacing sedentary time with physical activity. This study aimed to examine the postprandial metabolic effects of breaking sedentary time by accumulating walking and repeated bouts of nonambulatory standing during simulated school days in inactive adolescent girls. METHODS: Seventeen girls (mean ± SD = 12.8 ± 0.4 yr) completed two 3-d experimental conditions. On days 1 and 2 of the standing + walking (STD-WLK) experimental trial, participants interrupted sedentary time by completing 4 × 10 min bouts of self-paced walking and accumulated 18 × 5 min standing bouts during each simulated school day. On day 3 of STD-WLK, participants attended school as normal with no additional physical activity or standing prescribed. On all 3 d of the control condition (CON), participants attended school as normal with no physical activity intervention. On days 2 and 3 of both STD-WLK and CON, a baseline capillary blood sample was provided to determine fasting [TAG] and [glucose]. Participants then consumed a standardized breakfast (0 h) and lunch (4.7 h), and blood samples were provided postprandially at 2.7, 5.3, and 7.3 h for [TAG] and [glucose]. RESULTS: Energy expenditure was 28% (95% confidence interval = 8% to 52%) higher during school hours on day 1 and day 2 during STD-WLK compared with CON (2171 vs 1693 kJ; effect size = 0.89, P = 0.008). However, no reduction of fasting or postprandial [TAG] or [glucose] was observed on day 2 or day 3 ( P ≥ 0.245). CONCLUSIONS: Two consecutive days of breaking prolonged sitting with self-paced walking and intermittent standing had no meaningful effect on postprandial metabolism in adolescent girls.

BACKGROUND: Understanding consumers' health information needs across all stages of the pregnancy trajectory is crucial to the development of mechanisms that allow them to retrieve high-quality, customized, and layperson-friendly health information. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to identify research gaps in pregnancy-related consumer information needs and available information from different sources. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of CINAHL, Cochrane, PubMed, and Web of Science for relevant articles that were published from 2009 to 2019. The quality of the included articles was assessed using the Critical Appraisal Skills Program. A descriptive data analysis was performed on these articles. Based on the review result, we developed the Pregnancy Information Needs Ontology (PINO) and made it publicly available in GitHub and BioPortal. RESULTS: A total of 33 articles from 9 countries met the inclusion criteria for this review, of which the majority were published no earlier than 2016. Most studies were either descriptive (9/33, 27%), interviews (7/33, 21%), or surveys/questionnaires (7/33, 21%); 20 articles mentioned consumers' pregnancy-related information needs. Half (9/18, 50%) of the human-subject studies were conducted in the United States. More than a third (13/33, 39%) of all studies focused on during-pregnancy stage; only one study (1/33, 3%) was about all stages of pregnancy. The most frequent consumer information needs were related to labor delivery (9/20, 45%), medication in pregnancy (6/20, 30%), newborn care (5/20, 25%), and lab tests (6/20, 30%). The most frequently available source of information was the internet (15/24, 63%). PINO consists of 267 classes, 555 axioms, and 271 subclass relationships. CONCLUSIONS: Only a few articles assessed the barriers to access to pregnancy-related information and the quality of each source of information; further work is needed. Future work is also needed to address the gaps between the information needed and the information available.

BACKGROUND: Burkina Faso is endemic with soil-transmitted helminth infections. Over a decade of preventive chemotherapy has been implemented through annual lymphatic filariasis (LF) mass drug administration (MDA) for population aged five years and over, biennial treatment of school age children with albendazole together with schistosomiasis MDA and biannual treatment of pre-school age children through Child Health Days. Assessments were conducted to evaluate the current situation and to determine the treatment strategy for the future. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: A cross-sectional assessment was conducted in 22 sentinel sites across the country in 2013. In total, 3,514 school age children (1,748 boys and 1,766 girls) were examined by the Kato-Katz method. Overall, soil-transmitted helminth prevalence was 1.3% (95% CI: 1.0-1.8%) in children examined. Hookworm was the main species detected, with prevalence of 1.2% (95% CI: 0.9-1.6%) and mean egg counts of 2.1 epg (95% CI: 0-4.2 epg). Among regions, the Centre Ouest region had the highest hookworm prevalence of 3.4% (95% CI: 1.9-6.1%) and mean egg counts of 14.9 epg (95% CI: 3.3-26.6 epg). A separate assessment was conducted in the Centre Nord region in 2014 using community-based cluster survey design during an LF transmission assessment survey (TAS). In this assessment, 351 children aged 6-7 years and 345 children aged 10-14 years were examined, with two cases (0.6% (95% CI: 0.2-2.1%)) and seven cases (2.0% (95% CI: 1.0-4.1%)) of hookworm infection was identified respectively. The results using both age groups categorized the region to be 2% to <10% in STH prevalence according to the pre-defined cut-off values. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Through large-scale preventive chemotherapy, Burkina Faso has effectively controlled STH in school age children in the country. Research should be conducted on future strategies to consolidate the gain and to interrupt STH transmission in Burkina Faso. It is also demonstrated that LF TAS provides one feasible and efficient platform to assess the STH situation for post LF MDA decision making.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to examine the effect of 30 and 60 min of moderate-intensity treadmill walking on postprandial triacylglycerol concentrations ([TAG]) in healthy girls. METHODS: Eighteen 10- to 14-yr-old girls (mean ± SD; body mass = 48 ± 11 kg, body fat = 19.0 ± 4.6%, peak oxygen uptake [V˙O2] = 47 ± 6 mL·kg·min) completed three 2-d trials in a counterbalanced crossover design, each separated by 14 d. On day 1, they rested (CON) or completed 30 min (EX30) or 60 min (EX60) of intermittent treadmill exercise at 56% peak V˙O2, inducing energy expenditures of 777 and 1536 kJ (186 and 367 kcal), respectively. On day 2, after a 12-h fast, a capillary blood sample was taken for fasting [TAG] before a high-fat milkshake (80 kJ·kg(-1) body mass) was consumed. Further blood samples were taken hourly over a 6-h postprandial rest period for [TAG]. ANOVA and Student's t-tests were used to analyze the data. RESULTS: Fasting [TAG] was lower in EX60 than CON (95% confidence interval [CI] = -0.36 to 0.04, effect size (ES) = 0.41) and EX30 (95% CI = -0.47 to 0.04, ES = 0.46); all group mean concentrations were low (≤ 0.90 mmol·L(-1)). The main effect for condition revealed differences in postprandial [TAG] over time (ES = 0.36). The EX60 total area under the [TAG] versus time curve was lower than CON (95% CI = -2.66 to -0.04, ES 0.40) and EX30 (95% CI = -2.11 to 0.15, ES = 0.30); CON and EX30 were similar (95% CI = -1.44 to 0.71, ES = 0.10). CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates that 60 min but not 30 min of moderate treadmill exercise, with a gross energy expenditure of 1536 kJ (367 kcal), attenuated postprandial [TAG] in girls.

This study examined the effects of 30 and 60 min of moderate intensity exercise on postprandial triacylglycerol concentration [TAG] in 11 healthy, 13-year-old boys. The boys completed three counterbalanced conditions. On day 1, they either rested (CON), or jogged for 30 min (EX30) or 60 min (EX60) at 55% peak [Formula: see text] Following a 12-h fast, on day 2 a capillary blood sample was taken for fasting [TAG] before a high fat milkshake was consumed. Further blood samples were taken every hour over a 6-h postprandial rest period for [TAG]. The estimated energy expenditure for EX30 (982 kJ) was doubled in EX60 (1967 kJ). Differences in fasting [TAG] between the conditions were small (ES = 0.23, P = 0.35). Differences in postprandial TAG over time between conditions were identified (ES = 0.41, P = 0.03). Mean [TAG] was lower in EX60 than CON (-33 to -3%, P = 0.03) with a similar strong trend for EX30 (-29 to 1%, P = 0.06); EX60 and EX30 were not different from each other (-21 to 14%, P = 0.62). The total area under the [TAG] versus time curve was different between conditions (ES = 0.42, P = 0.03). Again, EX60 was lower than CON (-31 to -2%, P = 0.02) with a strong trend for EX30 (-31 to 4%, P = 0.06); EX30 and EX60 were not different from each other (-17 to 16%, P = 0.58). This study shows for the first time that both 30 and 60 min of jogging, with energy expenditures equivalent to 982 and 1,967 kJ, attenuates postprandial [TAG] in adolescent boys, but not in a dose-dependent manner.
