RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Lower respiratory tract infections(LRTIs) in adults are complicated by diverse pathogens that challenge traditional detection methods, which are often slow and insensitive. Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) offers a comprehensive, high-throughput, and unbiased approach to pathogen identification. This retrospective study evaluates the diagnostic efficacy of mNGS compared to conventional microbiological testing (CMT) in LRTIs, aiming to enhance detection accuracy and enable early clinical prediction. METHODS: In our retrospective single-center analysis, 451 patients with suspected LRTIs underwent mNGS testing from July 2020 to July 2023. We assessed the pathogen spectrum and compared the diagnostic efficacy of mNGS to CMT, with clinical comprehensive diagnosis serving as the reference standard. The study analyzed mNGS performance in lung tissue biopsies and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) from cases suspected of lung infection. Patients were stratified into two groups based on clinical outcomes (improvement or mortality), and we compared clinical data and conventional laboratory indices between groups. A predictive model and nomogram for the prognosis of LRTIs were constructed using univariate followed by multivariate logistic regression, with model predictive accuracy evaluated by the area under the ROC curve (AUC). RESULTS: (1) Comparative Analysis of mNGS versus CMT: In a comprehensive analysis of 510 specimens, where 59 cases were concurrently collected from lung tissue biopsies and BALF, the study highlights the diagnostic superiority of mNGS over CMT. Specifically, mNGS demonstrated significantly higher sensitivity and specificity in BALF samples (82.86% vs. 44.42% and 52.00% vs. 21.05%, respectively, p < 0.001) alongside greater positive and negative predictive values (96.71% vs. 79.55% and 15.12% vs. 5.19%, respectively, p < 0.01). Additionally, when comparing simultaneous testing of lung tissue biopsies and BALF, mNGS showed enhanced sensitivity in BALF (84.21% vs. 57.41%), whereas lung tissues offered higher specificity (80.00% vs. 50.00%). (2) Analysis of Infectious Species in Patients from This Study: The study also notes a concerning incidence of lung abscesses and identifies Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), Fusobacterium nucleatum, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Chlamydia psittaci, and Haemophilus influenzae as the most common pathogens, with Klebsiella pneumoniae emerging as the predominant bacterial culprit. Among herpes viruses, EBV and herpes virus 7 (HHV-7) were most frequently detected, with HHV-7 more prevalent in immunocompromised individuals. (3) Risk Factors for Adverse Prognosis and a Mortality Risk Prediction Model in Patients with LRTIs: We identified key risk factors for poor prognosis in lower respiratory tract infection patients, with significant findings including delayed time to mNGS testing, low lymphocyte percentage, presence of chronic lung disease, multiple comorbidities, false-negative CMT results, and positive herpesvirus affecting patient outcomes. We also developed a nomogram model with good consistency and high accuracy (AUC of 0.825) for predicting mortality risk in these patients, offering a valuable clinical tool for assessing prognosis. CONCLUSION: The study underscores mNGS as a superior tool for lower respiratory tract infection diagnosis, exhibiting higher sensitivity and specificity than traditional methods.

RESUMO

The mode of action (MOA) framework is proposed to inform a biological link between chemical exposures and adverse health effects. Despite a significant increase in knowledge and awareness, the application of MOA in human health risk assessment (RA) remains limited. This study aims to discuss the adoption of MOA for health RA within a regulatory context, taking our previously proposed but not yet validated MOA for lead neurotoxicity as an example. We first conducted a quantitative weight of evidence (qWOE) assessment, which revealed that the MOA has a moderate confidence. Then, targeted bioassays were performed within an in vitro blood-brain barrier (BBB) model to quantitatively validate the scientific validity of key events (KEs) in terms of essentiality and concordance of empirical support (dose/temporal concordance), which increases confidence in utilizing the MOA for RA. Building upon the quantitative validation data, we further conducted benchmark dose (BMD) analysis to map dose-response relationships for the critical toxicity pathways, and the lower limit of BMD at a 5% response (BMDL5) was identified as the point of departure (POD) value for adverse health effects. Notably, perturbation of the Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor (AHR) signaling pathway exhibited the lowest POD value, measured at 0.0062 µM. Considering bioavailability, we further calculated a provisional health-based guidance value (HBGV) for children's lead intake, determining it to be 2.56 µg/day. Finally, the health risk associated with the HBGV was assessed using the hazard quotient (HQ) approach, which indicated that the HBGV established in this study is a relative safe reference value for lead intake. In summary, our study described the procedure for utilizing MOA in health RA and set an example for MOA-based human health risk regulation.

RESUMO

Objectives: The Kaiser scoring system for breast magnetic resonance imaging is a clinical decision-making tool for diagnosing breast lesions. However, the Kaiser score (KS) did not include the evaluation of breast vascularity. Therefore, this study aimed to use KS combined with breast vascular assessment, defined as KS*, and investigate the effectiveness of KS* in differentiating benign from malignant breast lesions. Methods: This retrospective study included 223 patients with suspicious breast lesions and pathologically verified results. The histopathological diagnostic criteria were according to the fifth edition of the WHO classification of breast tumors. The KS* was obtained after a joint evaluation combining the original KS and breast vasculature assessment. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used for comparing differences in the diagnostic performance between KS* and KS, and the area under the receiver operating characteristic (AUC) was compared. Results: There were 119 (53.4%) benign and 104 (46.6%) malignant lesions in total. The overall sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of increased ipsilateral breast vascularity were 69.2%, 76.5%, and 73.1%, respectively. The overall sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of AVS were 82.7%, 76.5%, and 79.4%, respectively. For all lesions included the AUC of KS* was greater than that of KS (0.877 vs. 0.858, P = 0.016). The largest difference in AUC was observed in the non-mass subgroup (0.793 vs. 0.725, P = 0.029). Conclusion: Ipsilaterally increased breast vascularity and a positive AVS sign were significantly associated with malignancy. KS combined with breast vascular assessment can effectively improve the diagnostic ability of KS for breast lesions, especially for non-mass lesions.

RESUMO

Siraitia grosvenorii, an economically important plant species with high medicinal value, is endemic to subtropical China. To determine the population structure and origin of cultivated S. grosvenorii, we examined the variation in three chloroplast DNA regions (trnR-atpA, trnH-psbA, trnL-trnF) and two orthologous nuclear genes (CHS and EDL2) of S. grosvenorii in 130 wild individuals (selected from 13 wild populations across its natural distribution range) and 21 cultivated individuals using a phylogeographic approach. The results showed three distinct chloroplast lineages, which were restricted to different mountain ranges, and strong plastid phylogeographic structure. Our findings suggest that S. grosvenorii likely experienced ancient range expansion and survived in multiple refuges in subtropical China during glacial periods, resulting in population fragmentation in different mountainous areas. Our results also demonstrated that wild populations in Guilin (Guangxi, China) share the same gene pool as cultivated S. grosvenorii, suggesting that current cultivars were collected directly from local wild resources, consistent with the principles of "nearby domestication." The results of this study provide insights into improving the efficiency of S. grosvenorii breeding using a genetic approach and outline measures for the conservation of its genetic resources.

RESUMO

Early identification and treatment of high-risk coronary artery disease (CAD) is the main goal of current cardiovascular disease treatments. Speckle-tracking ultrasound technology can quantify myocardial work using pressure-strain loops. Because myocardial work takes into account the effect of the left ventricular systolic function afterload, it can more objectively reflect left ventricular myocardial mechanical function than the overall left ventricular longitudinal strain. Therefore, this technique is more widely used in diseases caused by CAD. This article reviews the evaluation and prediction of different CAD types using a variety of myocardial work parameters and provides a new method for clinical research to assess myocardial function, which is expected to become a new prediction method for CAD.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Harmonia axyridis (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) is a beneficial predatory arthropod in the agricultural ecosystem. For the success and development of integrated pest management strategies, it is essential to assess the toxicity risks of commonly used pesticides to nontarget arthropods. RESULTS: The glass tube residue method was used to determine the risk of nine pesticides to H. axyridis after second-instar exposure. To assess the potential risk of the selected pesticides, the pre-adult LR50 values were calculated by the hazard quotient (HQ) method. The LR50 (application rate causing 50% mortality) values of imidacloprid, dinotefuran, thiamethoxam, acetamiprid, bifenthrin, and dimethoate were 0.44, 0.82, 0.10, 0.05, 0.04, and 0.21 g a.i. ha-1 , respectively, showing unacceptable risk to H. axyridis after exposure to in and off field. However, emamectin benzoate and two fungicides, tebuconazole and myclobutanil, posed a low risk to H. axyridis and their HQ values were less than the trigger value of 5. CONCLUSIONS: The four neonicotinoid insecticides (imidacloprid, dinotefuran, thiamethoxam, and acetamiprid), pyrethroid bifenthrin, and organophosphorus dimethoate showed a high risk to H. axyridis. Emamectin benzoate, tebuconazole, and myclobutanil showed a low risk to H. axyridis under both exposure scenarios. The results provide critical scientific evidence to guide future regulation of pesticide management practices and protection of nontarget arthropods like H. axyridis. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMO

Objective: Evaluation of the endoscopic features of Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) is the key diagnostic approach in distinguishing these two diseases. However, making diagnostic differentiation of endoscopic images requires precise interpretation by experienced clinicians, which remains a challenge to date. Therefore, this study aimed to establish a convolutional neural network (CNN)-based model to facilitate the diagnostic classification among CD, UC, and healthy controls based on colonoscopy images. Methods: A total of 15,330 eligible colonoscopy images from 217 CD patients, 279 UC patients, and 100 healthy subjects recorded in the endoscopic database of Tongji Hospital were retrospectively collected. After selecting the ResNeXt-101 network, it was trained to classify endoscopic images either as CD, UC, or normal. We assessed its performance by comparing the per-image and per-patient parameters of the classification task with that of the six clinicians of different seniority. Results: In per-image analysis, ResNeXt-101 achieved an overall accuracy of 92.04% for the three-category classification task, which was higher than that of the six clinicians (90.67, 78.33, 86.08, 73.66, 58.30, and 86.21%, respectively). ResNeXt-101 also showed higher differential diagnosis accuracy compared with the best performing clinician (CD 92.39 vs. 91.70%; UC 93.35 vs. 92.39%; normal 98.35 vs. 97.26%). In per-patient analysis, the overall accuracy of the CNN model was 90.91%, compared with 93.94, 78.79, 83.33, 59.09, 56.06, and 90.91% of the clinicians, respectively. Conclusion: The ResNeXt-101 model, established in our study, performed superior to most clinicians in classifying the colonoscopy images as CD, UC, or healthy subjects, suggesting its potential applications in clinical settings.

RESUMO

Intestinal injury assessment of hexavalent chromium (Cr-VI) in humans is crucial for quantifying assessment of adverse health risk posed by the intake of Cr (VI)-contaminated water. To overcome the deficiency in simulating human gastric reduction and intestinal absorption, we modified the constituents of simulated gastric fluid in in vitro digestion method by adding reductants glutathione (18 µM) and ascorbic acid (180 µM), which incorporated with human intestinal epithelial model to construct an in vitro gastrointestinal digestion (IVGD) model for intestinal injury assessment. Cr-VI bioaccessibility results from IVGD model showed that weak gastric acidity significantly increased the intestinal accessible Cr-VI dose by 22.41-38.43 folds. The time-course intestinal absorption indicated prolongation of intestinal exposure destroyed the intestinal epithelium, and 24 h after Cr-VI treatment was a good time point to perform intestinal absorption and toxicity assessment. A series of cell-based bioassays provided initial warning of adverse effect, suggesting that epithelial integrity exhibited greatest sensitivity to Cr-VI exposure and might be used as a sensitive marker for the toxicity assessment of oral exposure to Cr-VI. Notably, this study provides a feasible strategy for delineation of Cr-VI biotransformation and intestinal injury following ingestion exposure, which contributes to address the toxicity data gap of low-dose exposure in humans and puts forward a reference for intestinal toxicity assessment of other chemicals.

RESUMO

In recent years, with the rapid development of electric vehicles, the ever-fluctuating cobalt price has become a decisive constraint on the supply chain of the lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery industry. To address these challenges, a new and unreported cobalt-free (Co-free) material with a general formula of LiNi0.8Fe0.1Mn0.1O2 (NFM) is introduced. This Co-free material is synthesized via the coprecipitation method and examined by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and density functional theory (DFT) to investigate the morphological, crystal-structure, and electrochemical properties. The NFM cathode can deliver a specific capacity of 202.6 mA h g-1 (0.1C, 3.0-4.5 V), a specific energy capacity of 798.8 W h kg-1 in material level (0.1C, 3.0-4.5 V), a reasonable rate capability, and a stable cycling performance (81.1% discharge capacity retention after 150 cycles at 10C, 3.0-4.3 V). Although the research on this subject is still in its early stage, the capability of this novel cathode material as a practical candidate for applications in next-generation Co-free lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is highlighted in this study.

RESUMO

Moxifloxacin and levofloxacin are currently recommended as empirical initial treatment options for community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in China by clinical guidelines and widely used in clinical settings. Several clinical outcomes comparing the efficacy and safety profiles of moxifloxacin versus levofloxacin through a meta-analysis were reported in paper 'Clinical benefits and cost-effectiveness of moxifloxacin as initial treatment for community-acquired pneumonia: a meta-analysis and economic evaluation'. In this dataset, we aimed at investigating more clinical endpoints comparing the efficacy and safety of moxifloxacin and levofloxacin in the treatment of CAP.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Moxifloxacin and levofloxacin are currently recommended as empirical initial treatment options for community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in China according to guidelines. Most studies that evaluated the efficacy and safety of moxifloxacin and levofloxacin in treating CAP as initial empirical treatment were single-centered trials assessing different clinical end points. In addition, there is limited research investigating moxifloxacin's clinical benefits in the context of health care resource utilization and reimbursement from the payer's perspective in China. Hence, this study was aimed at comparing the clinical efficacy of moxifloxacin and levofloxacin by conducting a meta-analysis and assessing their economic value from the China payer's perspective through a cost-utility analysis model. METHODS: For the meta-analysis, 6 bibliographic databases were searched for relevant publications from January 2000 to August 2020, and studies were assessed for eligibility under predetermined criteria. Meta-analysis was performed by using a random effects model when analyses included >2 trials. For the economic evaluation, a decision-tree model was constructed to investigate the cost-utility of moxifloxacin versus levofloxacin as initial regimens in the treatment of CAP inpatients. Parameter values were derived from meta-analysis, published literature, and clinician survey. The outcome was reported in the form of an incremental cost-effectiveness ratio. One-way sensitivity analysis and probabilistic sensitivity analysis were undertaken to assess the robustness of the model. FINDINGS: Twenty-seven randomized controlled trials were included in the meta-analysis. Results indicated that the clinical response rate at the test-of-cure visit with initial treatment of moxifloxacin was significantly higher than that of levofloxacin (3441 patients; random effects model; I2 = 49%; odds ratio, 3.35; 95% CI, 2.35-4.77; P < 0.001). In terms of the safety profile, total adverse events were not significantly different between the 2 groups (2770 patients; random effects model; I2 = 40%; odds ratio, 0.77; 95% CI, 0.56-1.06; P = 0.11). Output of the cost-utility model showed that under the willingness-to-pay threshold of one-time China gross domestic product per capita, moxifloxacin is dominant over levofloxacin, being less costly and more efficacious (0.002 quality-adjusted life year gained, CNY 844 [US$131] saved in total cost, negative incremental cost-effectiveness ratio). Sensitivity analyses indicated the robustness of the model as moxifloxacin remained dominant when model parameter values fluctuated. IMPLICATIONS: Moxifloxacin is more efficacious than levofloxacin as the initial empirical treatment for CAP. In addition, treatment of CAP with moxifloxacin instead of levofloxacin is expected to be cost-saving from the perspective of payers in China. However, for the cost-utility analysis, in the absence of a national representative database on costs for hospitalization in China, inputs in the cost-utility model could be underestimated or overestimated due to estimating errors applied to both treatment arms.

RESUMO

Although the carbendazim is widely used to manage spot blight in celery cultivation, information on residues identified is of interest. In this study, we examined the dissipation and residual amounts of carbendazim in celery and soil under different cultivation methods when using the suggested dose and ten times of that and the bioconcentration factor of carbendazim for celery. The results showed that when celery leaves were sprayed with the suggested dose, the half-lives in a celery field and greenhouse were 2.75 days and 3.29 days, respectively. When the soil matrix was sprayed with the recommended dose before cultivation, the half-lives of carbendazim residues were 16.86 days and 11.97 days. We also conducted a long-term dietary risk assessment using the corresponding criteria. The results showed that, in China, the use of carbendazim at a dose of 0.022 g/m2 is safer and more reasonable when the harvest interval is 28 days.

RESUMO

The determination of PM2.5-induced biological response is essential for understanding the adverse health risk associated with PM2.5 exposure. In this study, we conducted cell-based bioassays to measure the toxic effects of PM2.5 exposure, including cytotoxicity, oxidative stress, genotoxicity and inflammatory response. The concentration-response relationship was analyzed by benchmark dose (BMD) modeling and the BMDL10 was used to estimate the biological potency of PM2.5 exposure. PM2.5 samples were collected from three typical megacities of China (Beijing, BJ; Wuhan, WH; Guangzhou, GZ) in typical seasons (winter and summer). The total PM, water-soluble fractions (WSF), and organic extracts (OE) were prepared and subjected to examination of toxic effects. The biological potencies for cytotoxicity, oxidative stress and genotoxicity were generally higher in winter samples, while the inflammatory potency of PM2.5 was higher in summer samples. The relative health risk (RHR) was determined by integration of the biological potencies and the cumulative exposure level, and the ranks of RHR were BJ-W > WH-W > BJ-S > WH-S > GZ-W > GZ-S. Notably, we note that different PM2.5 compositions were associated with distinct biological effects, and the health effects distribution of PM2.5 varied in regions and seasons. These findings demonstrate that the approach of integrated cell-based bioassays could be used for the evaluation of health effects of PM2.5 exposure.

RESUMO

To assess the carcinogenic potential of PM2.5 exposure, we developed a cell-based experimental protocol to examine the cell transformation activity of PM2.5 samples from different regions in China. The seasonal ambient PM2.5 samples were collected from three megacities, Beijing (BJ), Wuhan (WH), and Guangzhou (GZ), from November 2016 to October 2017. The mean concentrations of PM2.5 were much higher in the winter season (BJ: 109.64 µg/m3, WH: 79.99 µg/m3, GZ: 49.99 µg/m3) than that in summer season (BJ: 42.40 µg/m3, WH: 25.82 µg/m3, GZ: 19.82 µg/m3). The organic extracts (OE) of PM2.5 samples from combined summer (S) (June, July, August) or winter (W) (November, December, January) seasons were subjected to characterization of chemical components. We treated human bronchial epithelial (HBE) cells expressing CYP1A1 (HBE-1A1) with PM2.5 samples at doses ranging from 0 to 100 µg/mL (0, 1.563, 3.125, 6.25, 12.5, 25, 50, 100 µg/mL) and determined the phenotype of malignant cell transformation. A dose-response relationship was analyzed by benchmark dose (BMD) modeling, and the potential were indicated by BMDL10. The order of the carcinogenic risk of seasonal PM2.5 samples from high to low was BJ-W, WH-W, GZ-W, WH-S, BJ-S, and GZ-S. Notably, we found that the alteration in the lung cancer-related biomarkers, KRAS, PTEN, p53, c-Myc, PCNA, pAKT/AKT, and pERK/ERK was congruent with the activity of cell transformation and the content of specific components of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs) bound to PM2.5. Taken together, we have successfully developed a cell-based alternative model for the evaluation of potent carcinogenicity upon long-term PM2.5 exposure.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: There have been few studies on economic evaluation of acne treatments. Chemical peel (CP), a treatment approach primarily aimed at removing acne hyperpigmentation and scarring, is gradually accepted in the Chinese market. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to detect willingness-to-pay (WTP) and to conduct a benefit-cost analysis for CP treatment among Chinese acne patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The costs were obtained from the patient's perspective and compared with benefits. The net benefits were approximated by WTP, using the contingent valuation method. A glycolic acid peel served as the demonstrated example. WTP and related information were inquired via an online questionnaire among the Chinese population. Factors for WTP were identified using generalized linear models. The benefit-cost ratio (BCR) was calculated. Discounting was not considered for both WTP and costs. RESULTS: The response rate of the survey was 95.4% among the 476 anonymous participants. The average cost for three-time CP treatment was USD 383.4. Statistically significant differences in WTP among the cases were identified. The mean WTP for Case 1, Case 2, and Case 3 was USD 234.6, 222.0, and 401.7, respectively. A statistically significant association between WTP and self-reported acne severity was observed for all cases after adjustments for demographic characteristics (P<0.01). The Cardiff Acne Disability Index was positively associated with WTP. The BCRs were 0.61, 0.58, and 1.4 for Case 1, Case 2, and Case 3, respectively. CONCLUSION: Patients with acne in China are willing to pay for acne treatment. Although the benefits of CP treatment have not generally outweighed their aggregated costs, WTP for CP treatment was positively associated with self-reported acne severity and desirable efficacy of treatment. Individualized acne treatments are recommended to target a specific population in the Chinese market.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The epidemiological characteristics of sudden cardiac death (SCD) in the autonomous region of Xinjiang Uygur have been largely unknown. This study aimed to evaluate the incidence and demographic risk factors of SCD in Xinjiang, China. METHODS: This retrospective study reviewed medical records from 11 regions in Xinjiang with different geography (north and south of the Tian Shan mountain range), gross domestic product, and ethnicity (Han, Uyghur, Kazakh, and Hui). SCD was defined as unexpected death due to cardiac reasons within 1 hour after the onset of acute symptoms, including sudden death, unexpected death, and nonviolent death. Monitoring was conducted throughout 2015. Demographic and mortality data were recorded and age-adjusted standardized risk ratio (SRR) was analyzed. RESULTS: Among 3,224,103 residents, there were 13,308 all-cause deaths and 1244 events of SCD (784 men and 460 women; overall incidence 38.6 per 100,000 residents). SCD was associated with age (χ2 = 2105.3), but not geography. Men had an increased risk of SCD compared with women (SRR: 1.75, 95% CI: 1.10-2.79). The risk of SCD was highest in residents of the Uyghur (SRR: 1.59, 95% CI: 1.05-2.42) and Kazakh (SRR: 1.92, 95% CI: 1.29-2.87) compared with those of the Han. Poor economic development was associated with elevated risk of SCD (SRR: 1.55, 95% CI: 1.02-2.38). CONCLUSION: SCD is an important public health issue in China. Our understanding of the demographic differences on SCD in Xinjiang, China may improve the risk stratification and management to reduce the incidence and lethality of SCD.

RESUMO

The association of atopic dermatitis and chronic spontaneous urticaria with socioeconomic status has been little studied. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of skin diseases and their association with socioeconomic status in adolescents in China. A cross-sectional study was conducted at Central South University, Changsha, China. All newly enrolled students underwent dermatological examination and completed a survey. Socioeconomic status was measured in terms of parental education level and income. Two-level logistic regression models were used. A total of 8,226 students consented to participate. On dermatological examination, moderate to severe acne (10.2%) had the highest prevalence, followed by chronic spontaneous urticaria (2.7%), atopic dermatitis (2.5%), and tinea (1.7%). Socioeconomic status was positively associated with the prevalence of chronic spontaneous urticaria (ptrend = 0.001) and atopic dermatitis (ptrend = 0.0094). Tinea was inversely associated with socioeconomic status (ptrend = 0.025). Higher parental socioeconomic status was associated with higher risk of atopic dermatitis and chronic spontaneous urticaria, but lower risk of tinea.

RESUMO

Non-destructive detection for soluble solids content (SSC) is important to improve watermelon's internal quality, which attracts more and more attention from consumers. In order to realize the precise detection for SSC of mini watermelon's whole surface by using Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy and reduce the influence of detective position variability on the accuracy of NIR prediction model for SSC, the diffused transmission spectra and soluble solids content were collected from three different detective positions of 'jingxiu' watermelon, including the equator, calyx and stem. The prediction models of single detective position and mixed three detective positions for SSC were established with Partial least square (PLS). Successive projections algorithm (SPA) and competitive adaptive reweighted sampling (CARS) were adopted to select effective variables of NIR spectroscopy for SSC of watermelon as well. The results showed that the prediction model of mixed three detective positions was better than the model of single detective position. Meanwhile, 42 characteristic variables of NIR spectroscopy selected with CARS were used to establish PLS prediction model for SSC. The prediction model was simplified significantly and the prediction accuracy for SSC was improved greatly. The correlation coefficient of prediction (RP) and root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) by CARS-PLS were 0.892, 0.684 °Brix for the equator, 0.905, 0.621 °Brix for the calyx, 0.899, 0.721 °Brix for the stem, respectively. However, the prediction result of SPA-PLS established by 19 characteristic wavelength variables of NIR spectroscopy was bad for the equator, calyx and stem detective positions. The correlation coefficient of prediction (RP) is less than 0.752 and root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) is relatively high. It was proposed that the PLS prediction model established by mixed three different detective positions with effective characteristic wavelength variables selected by CARS can improve the prediction accuracy for SSC. And the CARS-PLS prediction model can achieve fast and precise detection for SSC of mini watermelon's whole surface. The influence of detective position variability on the accuracy of NIR prediction model could be reduced simultaneously. This paper could provide theoretical basis for calibrating NIR prediction model for SSC of mini watermelon. It also could provide reference for developing the portable and non-destructive detection equipment for soluble solids content of mini watermelon's whole surface.

RESUMO

Remote sensing technique can be used to examine the effects of agrichemical application on the performance of field crops at a large scale in an effort to develop precision agricultural aerial spraying technology. In this study, an airplane M-18B at the 4-m flight height was used to spray a mix of agrichemicals (a fungicide and a plant growth regulator) to control rice leaf blast disease and improve the growth vigor of rice plants in the field. After the aerial spraying, satellite imagery of tested area was acquired and processed to calculate vegetation indices (VIs). Ground agrichemical concentration data were also collected. The relationships between droplets deposition and VIs were analyzed. The results indicated that the highest correlation coefficient between single phase spectral feature (NDVI) and droplets deposition points density (DDPD, points·cm-2) was 0.315 with P-value of 0.035 while the highest correlation coefficient between temporal change characteristic (MSAVI) and droplets deposition volume density (DDVD, µL·cm-2) was 0.312 with P-value of 0.038). Rice plants with the greatest growth vigor were all detected within the spraying swath, with a gradual decrease in the vigor of rice plants with the increase of droplets drift distance. There were similar trend patterns in the changes of the spraying effects based on the spatial interpolation maps of droplets deposition data and spectral characteristics. Therefore, vegetation indexes, NDVI and MSAVI calculated from satellite imagery can be used to determine the aerial spraying effects in the field on a large scale.

RESUMO

The present study proposed competitive adaptive reweighted sampling (CARS) algorithm to be used to select the key variables from near-infrared hyperspectral imaging data of "Ya" pear. The performance of the developed model was evaluated in terms of the coefficient of determination(r2), and the root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) and the ratio (RPD) of standard deviation of the validation set to standard error of prediction were used to evaluate the performance of proposed model in the prediction process. The selected key variables were used to build the PLS model, called CARS-PLS model. Comparing results obtained from CARS-PLS model and results obtained from full spectra PLS, it was found that the better results (r(2)pre = 0. 908 2, RMSEP=0. 312 0 and RPD=3. 300 5) were obtained by CARS-PLS model based on only 15. 6% information of full spectra. Moreover, performance of CARS-PLS model was also compared with PLS models built by using variables got by Monte Carlo-uninformative variable elimination (MC-UVE) and genetic algorithms (GA) method. The result found that CARS variable selection algorithm not only can remove the uninformative variables in spectra, but also can reduce the collinear variables from informative variables. Therefore, this method can be used to select the key variables of near-infrared hyperspectral imaging data. This study showed that near-infrared hyperspectral imaging technology combined with CARS-PLS model can quantitatively predict the soluble solids content (SSC) in "Ya" pear. The results presented from this study can provide a reference for predicting other fruits quality by using the near-infrared hyperspectral imaging.
