RESUMO

Long-term exposure to pesticides is associated with the incidence of cancer. With the exponential increase in the number of new pesticides being synthesized, it becomes more and more important to evaluate the toxicity of pesticides by means of simulated calculations. Based on existing data, machine learning methods can train and model the predictions of the effects of novel pesticides, which have limited available data. Combined with other technologies, this can aid the synthesis of new pesticides with specific active structures, detect pesticide residues, and identify their tolerable exposure levels. This article mainly discusses support vector machines, linear discriminant analysis, decision trees, partial least squares, and algorithms based on feedforward neural networks in machine learning. It is envisaged that this article will provide scientists and users with a better understanding of machine learning and its application prospects in pesticide toxicity assessment.

RESUMO

Norovirus (NoV) and hepatitis A virus (HAV) pose a considerable health risk worldwide. In recent years, many cases of virus infection caused by virus-contaminated strawberries have occurred worldwide. This study applied a critical control point system to analyze the main hazards during the production and marketing of strawberries imported into China and explore the key control points in the whole process. To further evaluate the risks in the supply chain, the established quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA) was used to determine the probability that residents would be infected with viruses after consuming imported strawberries. It was found that the risk of virus contamination from imported strawberries was low, and the virus contamination mainly results from water resources and personnel. This research helps the regulatory authorities formulate strategies to ensure the long-term microbial safety of imported strawberries. In addition, the methods may prove useful in evaluating the risks of other agricultural produce.

RESUMO

During the electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction, the faradaic efficiency of products seriously deviates from 100% due to the misjudgment of outlet flow, especially at industrial-level large current density. In this work, several modified equations and internal standard methods are recommended to calibrate the thermal mass flowmeter and establish benchmarks for CO2 reduction performance assessment.

RESUMO

Recently, sustainability of tourism growth has become an international issue due to environmental and economic uncertainty that needs recent researchers' focus and also requires the policymakers' attention. Therefore, the present research has examined the role of economic and environmental factors and tourism policy related to tourist arrival on the sustainability of tourism growth in China. The economic factor includes the gross domestic product (GDP), national income, and foreign direct investment (FDI), while environmental factors include carbon dioxide (CO2) emission, greenhouse gas (GHG) emission, and nitrous oxide emission. The study has extracted the data from World Development Indicators (WDI) from 1990 to 2020. The present research has employed nonlinear autoregressive distributed lagged (NARDL) to check the linkage among variables. The current study also examines the unit root using Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) and Phillips-Perron (PP) tests. The results revealed that GDP, national income, tourism policy related to tourist arrival, and FDI have a positive linkage with the sustainability of tourism growth. The results also exposed that environmental factors such as CO2 emission, GHG emission, and nitrous oxide emission have a negative linkage with the sustainability of tourism growth. This study provides the guidelines to the relevant authorities and regulators in developing and implementing the regulators regarding the sustainability of tourism growth by promoting economic and environmental conditions and effective tourism policies in the country.

RESUMO

Heavy metal pollution is a major threat to agricultural produce and it can pose potential ecological risks which subsequently impacts on human health. Strawberries are an economically important produce of China. The intrinsic link of heavy metal pollution risk in the soil-strawberry ecosystem is of concern. In this study, the pollution index of heavy metal pollutants in farmlands of different provinces were evaluated, and the results showed significantly high levels of cadmium. In addition, Nemerow integrated pollution index analysis showed that low-pollution farmlands only accounted for 14.07% of the total arable land area. Then, the transfer factors were used to calculate the migration of heavy metals from the soil into strawberries. The results showed that cadmium and nickel were relatively high in strawberries from the Guangxi province. Similar results were found for mercury in Jiangxi Province. The pollution index of single food pollution also showed that mercury in strawberries from Jiangxi Province was at a moderate pollution level. The comprehensive pollution index indicated that heavy metal pollution in strawberries in Central China may be severe. In addition, spatial clustering analysis showed that cadmium, chromium, lead, arsenic and zinc in strawberries had significant hotspot clustering in central, south and southwest China. Finally, our studies also suggested that the risk of carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic diseases was higher in the (2, 4] years age group than in other age groups. People in Yunnan Province were also found to have a higher non-carcinogenic risk than those in other provinces and cities in China. This study provides a comprehensive view of the potential risks of heavy metal contamination in strawberries, which could provide assistance in the design of regulatory and risk management programs for chemical pollutants in strawberries, thus ensuring the safety of consumption of these edible fruits.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT: Veterinary drugs, including antibiotics, antiparasitics, and growth promoters, are widely used in animal husbandry. Veterinary drug residues are key issues of food safety because they arouse public concern and can seriously endanger the health of consumers. To assess the risk of veterinary drug residues in pork sold in the People's Republic of China, the potential veterinary drug residue risks in imported and domestic pork were analyzed based on regulatory differences and veterinary drug residue safety incidents. For imported pork, a risk assessment model was established based on the differences in veterinary drug residue limits for the People's Republic of China, Brazil, the United States, Australia, Thailand, and Russia combined with comprehensive evaluation methods. The potential risk of veterinary drug residues in U.S. pork was the highest, and that in Brazilian pork was the lowest. For domestic pork, the distribution and aggregation of veterinary drug residue safety incidents in the People's Republic of China was analyzed from 2015 to 2019 with a geographic information system. This study provides new insights into the safety of pork on the Chinese market and a scientific basis for formulating targeted supervision and early warning strategies.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is a highly contagious disease of livestock worldwide. Russia is a big agricultural country with a wide geographical area where FMD outbreaks have become an obstacle for the development of the animal and animal products trade. In this study, we aimed to assess the export risk of FMD from Russia. RESULTS: After simulation by Monte Carlo, the results showed that the probability of cattle infected with FMD in the surveillance zone (Surrounding the areas where no epidemic disease has occurred within the prescribed time limit, the construction of buffer areas is called surveillance zone.) of Russia was 1.29 × 10- 6. The probability that at least one FMD positive case was exported from Russia per year in the surveillance zone was 6 %. The predicted number of positive cattle of the 39,530 - 50,576 exported from Russia per year was 0.06. A key node in the impact model was the probability of occurrence of FMD outbreaks in the Russian surveillance zone. By semi-quantitative model calculation, the risk probability of FMD defense system defects was 1.84 × 10- 5, indicating that there was a potential risk in the prevention and control measures of FMD in Russia. The spatial time scan model found that the most likely FMD cluster (P < 0.01) was in the Eastern and Siberian Central regions. CONCLUSIONS: There was a risk of FMDV among cattle exported from Russia, and the infection rate of cattle in the monitored area was the key factor. Understanding the export risk of FMD in Russia and relevant epidemic prevention measures will help policymakers to develop targeted surveillance plans.

RESUMO

The objective of this study is to assess the change in the normal MD elasticity using shear wave elastography (SWE) through measuring the middle deltoid (MD) elasticity in healthy participants at various arm abduction (with bilateral arms at 0 degrees abduction and 90 degrees active abduction) and analyzing the factors affecting normal MD elasticity. Mean shear wave velocity (SWV) of the MD in healthy right-handed participants were evaluated using SWE at different arm abduction, and potential factors (gender, MD thickness, age, body mass index) affecting MD elasticity were analyzed. Different arm abduction positions of each participant were as follows: (i) 0° abduction of bilateral arm (L0° and R0°), (ii) 90° active abduction of bilateral arm (L90° and R90°). Mean SWV was significantly higher at L90° than L0°, higher at R90° than R0°, higher at R0° than L0°, and higher at R90° than L90° (all P < 0.0001). SWV was significantly higher in males at both L0° (P < 0.05) and R0° (P < 0.01) than in females. Neither MD thickness, age nor body mass index influenced MD elasticity. Reference ranges of normal MD elasticity were 2.4-3.1 m/s in males and 2.2-2.9 m/s in females at L0° and 2.5-3.3 m/s in males and 2.4-3.2 m/s in females at R0°, and were 4.9-6.7 m/s at L90°, 5.2-7.1 m/s at R90° for both males and females. SWE is a feasible technique to assess normal MD elasticity at various arm abduction. Our results suggest that normal MD elasticity at L0°, R0°, L90°, and R90° with SWE are different. Moreover, these reference ranges may serve as quantitative baseline measurements for assessment of normal MD elasticity in the future.

RESUMO

With the improvement of the global food safety regulatory system, there is an increasing importance for food safety risk assessment. Veterinary drugs are widely used in poultry and livestock products. The abuse of veterinary drugs seriously threatens human health. This article explains the necessity of risk assessment for veterinary drug residues in meat products, describes the principles and functions of risk assessment, then summarizes the risk assessment process of veterinary drug residues, and then outlines the qualitative and quantitative risk assessment methods used in this field. We propose the establishment of a new meat product safety supervision model with a view to improve the current meat product safety supervision system.

RESUMO

To evaluate the efficacy and economics of different proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) combined with bismuth quadruple regimens for Helicobacter pylori (Hp) eradication, a retrospective analysis method was used to collect Hp-positive patients who were treated with a bismuth-containing quadruple regimen (PPIs + amoxicillin + furazolidone + colloid pectin bismuth) from the outpatient department of gastroenterology in our hospital from January to June 2017. A total of 1410 patients were included in the study and divided into four groups according to different PPIs: group A (pantoprazole sodium enteric-coated capsules, 352 cases), group B (esomeprazole magnesium enteric-coated tablets, 462 cases), group C (pantoprazole sodium enteric-coated tablets, 392 cases) and group D (rabeprazole sodium enteric-coated tablets, 204 cases). The eradication rate of Hp and cost-saving in each group were then compared. There were no significant differences of gender (P = 0.526) and age (P = 0.366) between each Hp treatment regimen. The eradication rates of groups A, B, C and D were 91.48%, 89.83%, 86.73% and 90.69%, respectively. No statistical differences of Hp eradication rates were observed between each group yet (P > 0.05). However, the cost of group A was the lowest. In the present study, the Hp eradication rates between different PPIs regimens were similar in treating Hp infection. Nevertheless, the point in favor of pantoprazole capsules is the slightly higher Hp eradication rate and lower drug cost than other PPIs, which provides a significant evidence for the clinical medication decision in treating Hp infection.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Certain districts and counties in China designated local general hospital as the designated hospital for tuberculosis (TB) management after the promulgation of the Law of Practicing Physicians in 2009. To our knowledge, there is limited research on catastrophic payments of TB patients under this service model, often with inconsistent conclusions. In addition, there has been no published studies from China using the updated 2018 World Health Organization (WHO) definition of catastrophic total costs due to TB. This study used the latest criterion recommended by the WHO to analyze the incidence of catastrophic total costs for households affected by TB under the designated hospital model and explore its influencing factors. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis was carried out in all ten designated hospitals in Ningbo, China. Eligible pulmonary TB cases confirmed by sputum culture of Mycobacterium tuberculosis were recruited and surveyed from September 2018 to October 2018. We evaluated catastrophic total costs using total costs for TB treatment exceeding 20% of the household's annual pre-TB income. A sensitivity analysis was performed while varying the thresholds. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression were applied to select variables, and multiple logistic regression analysis were used to identify the determinants of catastrophic total costs. RESULTS: A total of 672 patients were included, with a median age of 41 years old. The rate of catastrophic total costs of surveyed households was 37.1%, and that of households affected by MDR was 69.6%. Medical cost accounted for more than 60% of the total cost. 57.7% cases were hospitalized. The hospitalization rates of patients with no comorbidities, no severe adverse drug reactions, and rifampin-sensitive TB were 53.9, 54.9, and 55.3%, respectively. Patients in the poorest households had the highest hospitalization rates (Q1:54.8%, Q2:61.4%, Q3:52.2%, Q4:49.5%, Q5:69.7%, P = 0.011) and the highest incidence of severe adverse drug reactions (Q1:29.6%, Q2:19.6%, Q3:28.0%, Q4:33.7%, Q5:35.3%, P = 0.034). Factors such as elderly, minimum living security, unemployed before or after illness, poor economic status, seeking medical care outside the city, hospitalization, absence of local basic medical insurance coverage and MDR were positively associated with catastrophic costs. CONCLUSION: Substantial proportions of patients and households affected by pulmonary TB faced catastrophic economic risks in Ningbo, China. The existing policies that focus on expanding the coverage of basic medical insurance and economic protection measures (such as cash transfers to compensate low-income households for direct non-medical costs and income loss) might be insufficient. Tailored program that mitigate inappropriate healthcare and address equity of care delivery are worthy of attention.

RESUMO

Steady state simulations were carried out in APSEN Plus®, state-point stream data were extracted from the simulation results and tabulated in sequential order for IGCC configurations. These data give detailed insights into the performance of individual process units and enable researches to better understand the interplay of various process units as well as provide data for reproducibility of the work described in Ref. (Rosner et al., 2019). Furthermore, more detailed insights in the economic analysis are garnered by providing itemized capital and operating cost data as well as the individual unit cost correlations. In addition, a detailed plant water balance is provided for the base cases of the cold gas cleanup scenario and warm gas cleanup scenario.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The objective of this study was to investigate the cardioprotective effects of a dodecafluoropentane (DDFP)-based perfluorocarbon emulsion (DDFPe) as an artificial carrier for oxygen delivery to ischemic myocardium, using 99mTc-duramycin SPECT imaging. METHODS: Rat hearts with Ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) was prepared by coronary ligation for 45-min followed by reperfusion. The feasibility of 99mTc-duramycin in detecting myocardial I/R injury and its kinetic profile were first verified in the ischemic hearts with 2-h reperfusion (n = 6). DDFPe (0.6 mL/kg) was intravenously administered at 10 min after coronary ligation in fifteen rats and saline was given in thirteen rats as controls. 99mTc-duramycin SPECT images were acquired in the DDFPe-treated hearts and saline controls at 2-h (DDFPe-2 h, n = 7 and Saline-2 h, n = 6) or 24-h (DDFPe-24 h, n = 8 and Saline-24 h, n = 7) of reperfusion. RESULTS: SPECT images, showing "hot-spot" 99mTc-duramycin uptake in the ischemic myocardium, exhibited significantly lower radioactive retention and smaller hot-spot size in the DDFPe-2 h and DDFPe-24 h hearts compared to controls. The infarcts in the Saline-24 h hearts extended significantly relative to measurements in the Saline-2 h. The extension of infarct size did not reach a statistical difference between the DDFPe-2 h and DDFPe-24 h hearts. Ex vivo measurement of 99mTc-duramycin activity (%ID/g) was lower in the ischemic area of DDFPe-2 h and DDFPe-24 h than that of the Saline-2 h and Saline-24 h hearts (P < 0.05). The area of injured myocardium, delineated by the uptake of 99mTc-duramycin, extended more substantially outside the infarct zone in the controls. CONCLUSIONS: Significant reduction in myocardial I/R injury, as assessed by 99mTc-duramycin cell death imaging and histopathological analysis, was induced by DDFPe treatment after acute myocardial ischemia. 99mTc-duramycin imaging can reveal myocardial cell death in ischemic hearts and may provide a tool for the non-invasive assessment of cardioprotective interventions.

RESUMO

The first peanut oil reference materials in naturally contaminated aflatoxins was developed, because of the high consumption of this product and the potential risk associated herewith. Based on liquid chromatographic method, homogeneity, short-term of 60 °C for seven days and long-term of 25 °C for twelve months' stability studies of candidates were assessed. The obtained data and statistical results showed a successful feasibility study, without any significant trend. Nine selected expert laboratories were invited to certify the contents of candidates using distinguish quantitative liquid chromatographic method. The certified values and expanded uncertainties (k = 2) for these two batches were 6.5 ±â€¯1.6 µg/kg, 29.3 ±â€¯5.3 µg/kg for aflatoxin B1; 1.2 ±â€¯0.3 µg/kg, 5.2 ±â€¯0.9 µg/kg for aflatoxin B2; 5.0 ±â€¯0.4 µg/kg, 8.4 ±â€¯0.7 µg/kg for aflatoxin G1; and 2.1 ±â€¯0.2 µg/kg, 3.5 ±â€¯0.2 µg/kg for aflatoxin G2, respectively.

RESUMO

Perceptions of residents in ecological resettlement area are important for evaluating the implementation effect of ecological relocation and sustainable development of world heritage site. With the residents from three different resettlement communities in Wulingyuan Scenic Area as the research object, we carried out a diachronic study on changes of the resettlers' perceptions of ecological relocation at different times and the main driving factors based on systematic survey data in 2010 and 2016. The results showed that in the year 2010 and 2016, resettlers reacted negatively to the indicators such as "enhancement of employment opportunity", "improvement of education and training opportunity", "enhanced environment in scenic area", "recognizing the identity change 'from rural to non-rural' after relocation". They favored the indicators such as "undermining traditional value", "lack of supervision during the implementation of policies". In 2016, resettlers of different gender, age and average monthly income had substantial different opinions on the economic and psychological impacts of ecological relocation. Education and income level had great impacts on their opinions of ecological relocation policies. Resettlers relocated by the way of investment for developing perceived were more sensitive to the economic impacts. Economic and policy impacts became the dominant driving factors for their general perception of ecological relocation. They pay more attention to employment, children's education opportunity as well as social security system for relocation.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Acute circulatory failure (ACF) is associated with high mortality rates in critically ill cirrhotic patients. Only a few accurate scoring models exist specific to critically ill cirrhotic patients with acute circulatory failure (CICCF) for mortality risk assessment. The aim was to develop and evaluate a novel model specific to CICCF. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study collected and analyzed the data on CICCF from the Multiparameter Intelligent Monitoring in Intensive Care-III database. The acute circulatory failure-chronic liver failure-sequential organ failure assessment (ACF-CLIF-SOFA) score was derived by Cox's proportional hazards regression. Performance analysis of ACF-CLIF-SOFA against CLIF-SOFA and model for end-stage liver disease systems was completed using area under the receiver operating characteristic curve. RESULTS: ACF-CLIF-SOFA identified six independent factors: mean arterial pressure [hazard ratio (HR)=0.984, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.978-0.990, P<0.001], vasopressin (HR=1.548, 95% CI: 1.273-1.883, P<0.001), temperature (HR=0.764, 95% CI: 0.694-0.840, P<0.001), bilirubin (HR=1.031, 95% CI: 1.022-1.041, P<0.001), lactate (HR=1.113, 95% CI: 1.084-1.142, P<0.001), and urine output (HR=0.854, 95% CI: 0.767-0.951, P=0.004). ACF-CLIF-SOFA showed a better predictive performance than CLIF-SOFA and model for end-stage liver disease in terms of predicting mortality (0.769 vs. 0.729 vs. 0.713 at 30 days, 0.757 vs. 0.707 vs. 0.698 at 90 days, 0.733 vs. 0.685 vs. 0.691 at 1 year, respectively, all P<0.05). CONCLUSION: ACF-CLIF-SOFA, as the first model specific to CICCF, enables a more accurate prediction at 30-day, 90-day, and 1-year follow-up periods than other existing scoring systems.

RESUMO

Purpose. To assess the morphology of idiopathic choroidal neovascularization (ICNV) by optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) and determine the therapeutic effects of intravitreal antivascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF). Method. Patients with naive ICNV were assessed by spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and OCTA in this observational study. The timing of observation was before treatment, 1 day after treatment with intravitreal anti-VEGF injection, and 1 month after the treatment. The central retina thickness (CRT) on SD-OCT, selected CNV area, and flow area on OCTA were measured. Results. A total of 17 eyes from 17 patients with ICNV were included in this study. OCTA showed visible irregular choroidal neovascularization with "tree-in-bud" form on outer retinal layer. After treatment, as well as in the 1-day follow-up, CNV decreased in size from the periphery, and the vessel density was reduced. As shown on OCTA, the selected CNV area and flow area were significantly reduced compared to pretreatment. The rate of CNV vessel area changes was higher on OCTA than the changes in CRT on SD-OCT at 1-day and 1-month follow-up. Conclusion. Intravitreal injection of anti-VEGF is effective for idiopathic choroidal neovascularization, and the treatment outcomes are observable after 1 day. OCTA provides a useful approach for monitoring and evaluating the treatment of intravitreal anti-VEGF for CNV.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate multiparametric MRI features in predicting pathologic response after preoperative chemoradiation therapy (CRT) for locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC). EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: Forty-eight consecutive patients (January 2012-November 2014) receiving neoadjuvant CRT were enrolled. All underwent anatomical T1/T2, diffusion-weighted MRI (DWI) and dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) MRI before CRT. A total of 103 imaging features, analyzed using both volume-averaged and voxelized methods, were extracted for each patient. Univariate analyses were performed to evaluate the capability of each individual parameter in predicting pathologic complete response (pCR) or good response (GR) evaluated based on tumor regression grade. Artificial neural network with 4-fold validation technique was further utilized to select the best predictor sets to classify different response groups and the predictive performance was calculated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. RESULTS: The conventional volume-averaged analysis could provide an area under ROC curve (AUC) ranging from 0.54 to 0.73 in predicting pCR. While if the models were replaced by voxelized heterogeneity analysis, the prediction accuracy measured by AUC could be improved to 0.71-0.79. Similar results were found for GR prediction. In addition, each subcategory images could generate moderate power in predicting the response, which if combining all information together, the AUC could be further improved to 0.84 for pCR and 0.89 for GR prediction, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Through a systematic analysis of multiparametric MR imaging features, we are able to build models with improved predictive value over conventional imaging metrics. The results are encouraging, suggesting the wealth of imaging radiomics should be further explored to help tailoring the treatment into the era of personalized medicine. RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the feasibility and the value of percutaneous ultrasound-guided subacromial bursography (PUSB) with contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) for assessment of rotator cuff tears. METHODS: Between January 2012 and September 2014, 2-D US and PUSB were prospectively performed in 135 patients with suspected rotator cuff tears from among 2,169 patients with clinically diagnosed subacromial impingement syndrome. Sixty-three patients who had undergone arthroscopy were included. The PUSB findings were compared with those from 2-D US using the McNemar test, with arthroscopy as a standard. RESULTS: Of a total of 19 full-thickness tears (FTTs), 2-D US correctly diagnosed 12 and PUSB correctly diagnosed 18 (P = 0.031). With regard to partial-thickness tears, 2-D US correctly diagnosed 31 and PUSB 35 of a total of 41 tears (P = 0.375).Accuracy in diagnosing FTTs was 81.0 % for 2-D US and 98.4 % for PUSB. 2-D US and PUSB yielded sensitivity of 63.2 % and 94.7 %, respectively, for full-thickness tears, with specificity of 88.6 % and 100.0 %, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: PUSB is a safe and feasible procedure, with greater sensitivity and specificity than 2D US in diagnosing FTTs As such, PUSB improves the value of ultrasound for assessing rotator cuff pathology. KEY POINTS: • PUSB allows new application of CEUS and offers a new form of bursography. • PUSB appears to facilitate diagnosis of full -thickness rotator cuff tears. • PUSB outlines the rotator cuff tears more clearly than 2-D US.

RESUMO

The corticospinal tract (CST) can be completely severed unilaterally in the medullary pyramids of the rodent brainstem. The CST is a motor tract that has great importance for distal muscle control in humans and, to a lesser extent, in rodents. A unilateral cut of one pyramid results in loss of CST innervation of the spinal cord mainly on the contralateral side of the spinal cord leading to transient motor disability in the forelimbs and sustained loss of dexterity. Ipsilateral projections of the corticospinal tract are minor. We have refined our surgical method to increase the chances of lesion completeness. We describe postsurgical care. Deficits on the Montoya staircase pellet reaching test and the horizontal ladder test shown here are detected up to 8 weeks postinjury. Deficits on the cylinder rearing test are only detected transiently. Therefore, the cylinder test may only be suitable for detection of short term recovery. We show how, electrophysiologically and anatomically, one may assess lesions and plastic changes. We also describe how to analyse fibers from the uninjured CST sprouting across the midline into the deprived areas. It is challenging to obtain >90% complete lesions consistently due to the proximity to the basilar artery in the medulla oblongata and survival rates can be low. Alternative surgical approaches and behavioural testing are described in this protocol. The pyramidotomy model is a good tool for assessing neuroplasticity-inducing treatments, which increase sprouting of intact fibers after injury.
